Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are joined now by Republican representative from Michigan, Lisa McLain,
- 0:03Speaker 1: who is also chairwoman of the House Republican Conference. Representative
- 0:07Speaker 1: maclan it is good to have you here on Prime.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us. I want to jump right in
- 0:11Speaker 1: because we have a lot to talk about because TSA
- 0:13Speaker 1: workers haven't been paid now in six weeks, and travelers
- 0:16Speaker 1: are really frustrated by hours long lines at airports. Republican
- 0:20Speaker 1: senators appeared happy with the bill to fund all parts
- 0:23Speaker 1: of DHS except for ICE and parts of Customs and
- 0:26Speaker 1: Border Patrol. Why do you think that wasn't good enough
- 0:29Speaker 1: for you and the other House Republicans.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well, let me just correct your statement and the senators
- 0:35Speaker 2: with facts.
- 0:37Speaker 3: This isn't an opinion.
- 0:38Speaker 2: This is what's in the bill, and I'm going to
- 0:40Speaker 2: read what's in the bill. On page two, line fifteen,
- 0:43Speaker 2: border security operations under the heading US Customs and Border
- 0:48Speaker 2: Protection shall have no force, effect or purpose for this Act.
- 0:55Speaker 2: So number one, they are saying US Border Patrol and custom.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Have zero enforcement. Okay, that's not positive.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Second, they doubled down on page three, line one, US
- 1:08Speaker 2: Immigration and Custom Enforcement in the Department of Homeland Securities
- 1:13Speaker 2: at twenty six table shall.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Have zero dollars.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So not only do US customs and enforcements and border
- 1:21Speaker 2: patrol agents that we funded in the one Big Beautiful Bill,
- 1:24Speaker 2: we'll have zero enforcement under this Senate bill, but they
- 1:27Speaker 2: will also have zero dollars. Americans spoke in the twenty
- 1:33Speaker 2: twenty four elections and American wants America wants us to
- 1:37Speaker 2: keep them safe and.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Have our borders closed.
- 1:41Speaker 2: This bill that they sent over from the Senate does
- 1:44Speaker 2: anything but that. So don't try, and you know, don't
- 1:49Speaker 2: don't try and give us this and say, oh my gosh,
- 1:51Speaker 2: well it's funded.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It's not. It does the exact opposite. Read the bill.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Okay, but you're pointing out it's not funded in this bill.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But I do want to point out those agents.
- 2:01Speaker 3: But let me point this out.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Those agencies were actually fully funded already by the President's
- 2:07Speaker 1: Big Beautiful Bill, with ICE and CBP getting tens of
- 2:09Speaker 1: billions of dollars. So they're funded right now. Is there
- 2:13Speaker 1: another reason House Republicans aren't considering the bill.
- 2:17Speaker 2: You are right, they're funded right now. If we would
- 2:20Speaker 2: have passed the bill, the Department of Homeland Securities at
- 2:25Speaker 2: table shall go to zero zero means we had it funded.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Zero means the new number is zero, so it's not funded.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So you're saying it would the funding would completely stop.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not saying it. That's what they sent over.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Zero dollars. Zero doesn't mean that it's funded. Zero means
- 2:53Speaker 2: there are zero dollars to fund it.
- 2:57Speaker 3: That's what zero means.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Was there ever a thought that you could pass the legislation,
- 3:01Speaker 1: take a beat, go back, fight for more funding for
- 3:04Speaker 1: ICE and parts of CBP, and even for the Save Act.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot of options on the table,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but the American people don't want to gamble.
- 3:17Speaker 3: With open borders.
- 3:18Speaker 2: We did that with twenty million Americans coming through, so
- 3:22Speaker 2: we really don't want to gamble.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Here's the play. We passed through the House.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Three times now fully funding of DHS. If you want
- 3:33Speaker 2: to secure your house, you lock all the doors, not
- 3:36Speaker 2: just the front door, and leave the back door open. Now,
- 3:38Speaker 2: when we pass this bill this week, we got four
- 3:41Speaker 2: Democrats to come with us.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Wow, that's movement, right.
- 3:44Speaker 2: We got four Democrats to actually compromise and get common sense. Also,
- 3:49Speaker 2: the Senate said, hey, we're willing to negotiate. Great, let's negotiate.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We got four Democrats in the House that voted to
- 3:55Speaker 2: fully fund. We got the Democrats that wanted to negotiate.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Here's our proposal.
- 4:00Speaker 2: How about we pay the people who go to work
- 4:03Speaker 2: every day while we negotiate.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Doesn't that sound fair?
- 4:08Speaker 1: We know how Republicans are going to move forward with
- 4:10Speaker 1: a stopgap proposal, but that will be dead on arrival
- 4:14Speaker 1: in the Senate, so this will likely just prolong things.
- 4:17Speaker 1: What is the solution in your opinion here?
- 4:20Speaker 2: The solution is to keep Americans safe and make sure
- 4:26Speaker 2: that our borders are secure.
- 4:29Speaker 3: That's the solution. But how do you get there? You
- 4:33Speaker 3: get there.
- 4:33Speaker 2: By common sense. You saw four Democrats get there this week,
- 4:38Speaker 2: which nobody thought would get there, and you see the
- 4:41Speaker 2: Senate open to negotiations. So what I'm saying is, let's
- 4:46Speaker 2: pay the people while we negotiate. Let's stop taking TSA
- 4:51Speaker 2: agents and FEMA and CVP agents hostage while we continue
- 4:56Speaker 2: to negotiate. I don't believe in taking hostages. I guess
- 5:00Speaker 2: the Senate Democrats do, right.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Representative Lisa McLean, thank you so much for your time.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Thank you
