- 0:00Our number 2 welcome back Miller in Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 0:03Radio Network as we take you up until 2:00 Cappy momentarily
- 0:08just real quick on this, we'll come back to a Trent on three is
- 0:11reporting that the Big 12 will now require football teams to
- 0:15provide daily injury reports three days prior to the game.
- 0:19So we'll get an availability report.
- 0:21They'll designate available, probable, questionable, doubtful
- 0:24or out on Wednesday, updated Thursday, updated Friday and
- 0:28then update it before the game. Somebody got to check on that
- 0:31gamble. Now he's got to be right.
- 0:34With more on that coming up is Cappy's got a heart out and we
- 0:36want to get to him here. Hello, capper.
- 0:38Trenton, Ken. Good to speak.
- 0:40With you boys, how we doing? OK, so let's start obviously
- 0:43with the Cubs in there and the struggles that they're currently
- 0:47going through right now. And it's been a prolonged going
- 0:49through. Had opportunities last night,
- 0:52just couldn't get the big hit when they needed it.
- 0:54PCA strikes out bases loaded. PCA has not been good at the
- 0:59plate as of late. Where are you on this Cubs?
- 1:01What's going wrong Cap, and how do they fix it?
- 1:05I mean, you know, everybody wants to blame Craig counsel and
- 1:08why, you know, don't think he's the greatest manager of all
- 1:12time. He's a damn good baseball guy.
- 1:14Put the blame where it belongs. I'm the players.
- 1:18You know, like 3 or 4 weeks ago at least, I was really critical
- 1:23of Kyle Tucker on an Instagram post that's got, I don't know,
- 1:2760,000 views. Now I'm getting all these
- 1:30messages. How can you be critical of Kyle
- 1:32Tucker? You're an idiot.
- 1:34You don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:36And then last night my friend from Bleacher Nation tweeted
- 1:40we're all tiptoeing around because we want Kyle Tucker to
- 1:43re sign with us. And I retweeted him and said not
- 1:47all of us have been tiptoeing around.
- 1:50Look. If he's not healthy and I don't
- 1:52believe he is, he should not be playing.
- 1:57Here's my question and it just I'm just an idiot with a
- 2:00microphone. I haven't been a Major League
- 2:02player, but if Kyle Tucker's exit should be bat speed is down
- 2:08to 70 miles an hour and it's been a dramatic drop and he's
- 2:11getting literally no exit velocity on balls that he hits.
- 2:16What would be wrong with putting him on the 10 day IL and saying,
- 2:21hey, Owen, can you get to Toronto?
- 2:25Can you get to Chicago? Can you get to Milwaukee,
- 2:27wherever we're at? And then say as Suzuki looks
- 2:31lost, he swung at a pitch to strike out with the bases
- 2:35loaded. That was literally 4 feet in the
- 2:39other batter's box. I mean, he looks like he
- 2:42couldn't hit it with a 12 foot bow door.
- 2:44So what would be wrong with giving him a couple days and
- 2:47going? You know what, Moises, can you
- 2:50get yourself to Toronto? We let you play in one of the
- 2:53bigger games of the year at the time against the Brewers and you
- 2:56got a bases loaded, bases clearing double.
- 2:59You were good enough to bat there.
- 3:01We won't trade either of you because you're untouchables in
- 3:04our system. Our offense looks freaking
- 3:07broken. You know what?
- 3:09But we're going to shake things up tonight.
- 3:11Guess what? Tonight, Owen Casey's in right
- 3:14field, Moist. This year's the DH.
- 3:17Let's go. But instead, we'll run the same
- 3:20lousy producing line up out there, and I'll watch Ian Hap,
- 3:25who makes a wonderful cup of coffee and is a great kid, is
- 3:28having a horrible year as a hitter.
- 3:30I'm going to watch PCA, who's 3 for 37 in August, probably
- 3:35strike out in a key situation. I'll watch Kyle Tucker go up
- 3:39there and not look healthy. Doesn't look like he could turn
- 3:42on his knee. I don't know if it's his finger
- 3:44as well from the June injury diving into second base.
- 3:48I'm going to watch all this and then I'm going to watch Suzuki
- 3:50and the inning striking out on a pitch in the other dugout.
- 3:53It's beyond nauseating. You mentioned PCA and the three
- 3:58for 37, Baton O 81 here in the month of August.
- 4:02We knew the whiff rate was really high and the numbers that
- 4:04he was putting up earlier this season with that whiff rate are
- 4:07just unsustainable. You're not going to hit at that
- 4:09level. What's more true though, that
- 4:11this guy's going to be a perennial All Star, or the holes
- 4:14in his swing are going to keep him back from being a high
- 4:18impact bat year in and you're out.
- 4:21PCA yes, it's it's absolutely comes down to pitch selection.
- 4:27I mean, I'm watching some of the decisions that he makes at the
- 4:30plate and I love PCA. He plays hard.
- 4:34He's a great person. He connects with our fan base.
- 4:37Like, I watch a lot of this and it's super, super cool, But look
- 4:42at his pitch selection, look at his arm base percentage.
- 4:46He's not going to be a 40 home run guy every year.
- 4:49He's not. I don't think he's getting there
- 4:51this year anyway. But that all said, son, you
- 4:55can't be swinging at pitches that are, you know, 3 inches
- 4:59above the strike zone at your back foot.
- 5:02When they throw you a slider, ones that are breaking away off
- 5:05the plate, you you've got to have more discipline at the
- 5:10plate. Ariat.
- 5:12Who's been the most consistent cub this year?
- 5:14Is it Nico Horner? The most consistent call.
- 5:19That's a very good question. I would have said Michael Bush
- 5:23until this recent cold spell. So it's not him.
- 5:26Nico would absolutely be, let's say, King of the mountain.
- 5:29He'd be #1 and knock him off. Dansby absolutely not Matt Shaw,
- 5:34he's been excellent. Now, he absolutely was not
- 5:37consistent early. So no Ian Hap, no Carson Kelly.
- 5:42He's been. Great surprise.
- 5:43Solid, solid player, but not great.
- 5:47So not him. PCA, obviously.
- 5:50No, he's three for his last 37. Kyle Tucker?
- 5:53No, absolutely not. Yeah, it's by for sure, Nico
- 5:58Horner. Kate Horton gets the ball
- 6:01tonight, and Horton has a scoreless innings streak of
- 6:05what, 20 some innings that he hasn't given up in a run?
- 6:0723 and a third. 23 and a third just completely.
- 6:10But he's young and it's kind of now becoming a weekly topic of
- 6:15conversation. They've been pulling them out
- 6:16early, not let him get deep into games, not just in terms of
- 6:19innings but also pitch count. But what do you do for a break
- 6:22here because you have to have this guy come out Dover.
- 6:27Kate has to be great tonight, which is unfortunate that I'm
- 6:30telling you, a 23 year old who was not even here to start the
- 6:34season, that he has to be not good.
- 6:37He's got to be elite tonight because you're facing Kevin
- 6:41Gosman, who's a really good veteran pitcher.
- 6:43And right now, my offense looks like Ray Charles is at the
- 6:46plate. You know, yeah, How about the
- 6:48play Bichette and Guerrero combined to make last night?
- 6:51Did you guys see that play? Oh yeah.
- 6:53That was in the stretch. Incredible plan.
- 6:55I still don't know how they and they did.
- 6:57He was out. I don't know how they got Nico
- 6:59on that play. Yeah, I don't either.
- 7:01Yeah, unbelievable. All right, Cap, let's get to the
- 7:03Bears. What did?
- 7:04What do we know at this point? Training camp wise, got one pre
- 7:07season game behind us. What's kind of the consensus on
- 7:10the Bears? Thoughts far?
- 7:13Well, first of all, Ben Johnson just announced a little bit ago
- 7:15you guys have been on the air. Caleb Williams will start at
- 7:18quarterback Sunday night at Soldier Field against the
- 7:22Buffalo Bills. So it will be Caleb Williams
- 7:26ducking under center. Joe Tooney, all the starters are
- 7:29going to play. How much that remains to be
- 7:33seen. I mean, if you told me they win
- 7:35the coin toss, they elect to receive and he takes them right
- 7:38down the field and they get a touchdown, he's probably done
- 7:41for the night, I would think. But if they have some scuffles
- 7:45or if it's kind of, they'll probably go back out and play
- 7:48again. Do I think he plays the whole
- 7:50first? I don't, unless Ben really wants
- 7:55to roll the dice because you can't take a chance on getting
- 7:58Joe Tony's ankle rolled up or anything like that happening.
- 8:02But they are going to play all the starters against Buffalo.
- 8:06Sean McDermott did not commit to playing his starters.
- 8:10We know a year ago things fell apart after the Hail Mary in
- 8:13Washington. Jaquan Brisker, though, his
- 8:16injury, I think was a big part of some of that comeback that we
- 8:19saw a year ago. He knows you can't lead with his
- 8:21head right and concussions have been a major issue for him.
- 8:24What are you seeing out of training camp?
- 8:26A guy shaking off the cobwebs and and getting back out there
- 8:28on the field. He's going to be a hugely
- 8:30important piece of the back end of that D.
- 8:33Yeah, he looks really good. And he, he, they said they had
- 8:36to work with him on some fundamentals of tackling to keep
- 8:40him safe. And so, yeah, he looks really,
- 8:44really good. Hopefully it stays that way
- 8:48because when he's healthy, yeah, that dudes a monster.
- 8:51How did they use the tight ends? Both Comet and Loveland capped
- 8:54When you think back to the which weird right?
- 8:57Finished in a tie did it not? I think it did.
- 9:00How did they utilize both time? Did they both play cap?
- 9:02I didn't see the game. No, K Cole did not play in game
- 9:06one. Colston did a little bit.
- 9:08He didn't play a lot. Colson's much more of A tight
- 9:12end body wide receiver game. He can block, but Cole is much
- 9:17more tight end body tight end player wide receiver type
- 9:24mentality at times. So they're different.
- 9:27As they're putting this offense together, Ben Johnson comes in,
- 9:29he's got his offensive staff, obviously a young quarterback,
- 9:32everything that goes into it. One thing that I've noticed when
- 9:35I read through the practice reports, a lot of pre snap
- 9:37stuff, right penalties, guys not in the right spot.
- 9:40And it feels like even going back to the game Sunday, what
- 9:43they had, I think a couple of formation or illegal shift
- 9:46penalties that were in there. Does it feel like it's taking
- 9:49longer to kind of get everything implemented, or am I?
- 9:51Am I just looking for negativity because it's the Chicago Bears
- 9:53and there's always negativity there?
- 9:56No, I think it's fair. When I pull up the audio, you
- 9:59guys should play it for your audience.
- 10:01Taron Armstead was at practice the other day because he brought
- 10:04works, not broadcast, but works around the Dolphins.
- 10:07He retired. He was a really good tackle for
- 10:09them and he said I see all the talent, why Caleb Williams is
- 10:14the number one pick. But he said I think he struggles
- 10:17still with processing in Ben's offense.
- 10:20He said it's going to take time, you should play.
- 10:22It's like a 2 minute clip it. I think he's right on the money.
- 10:26Do I think it can get better? Yes.
- 10:28And tomorrow morning Ben Johnson's on my radio show with
- 10:32Jonathan Hood on ESPN 1000 at 8:00 AM.
- 10:35I'm going to ask him that exact question.
- 10:38Is that an inherent skill or can you teach Caleb to prostate?
- 10:41I want to hear his answer. If Caleb Williams gets hurt,
- 10:43obviously Baigent and Keenum are are both there.
- 10:46It'll be one of those two. Which one would it be Cap?
- 10:48Would it be the veteran or is Baigent done enough in his
- 10:51tenure as a bear to secure that number two spot?
- 10:55Or is it a battle in camp? No, he'll be the number two.
- 10:58He absolutely will. Because of the age.
- 11:01Difference. Because of the age, just
- 11:05Keenum's been around so long. Is he better?
- 11:09At this point, yeah. OK, Yeah.
- 11:12Speaking of the offense on that staff that I mentioned, Declan
- 11:16Doyle connection here to the state of Iowa with his father, a
- 11:19guy that just rose up the ranks in an incredible level.
- 11:22What has been your take away from the OC?
- 11:25We know Ben Johnson's obviously going to have his fingerprints
- 11:28in the in the plate calling all over it, but what you've seen
- 11:30from young Declan Doyle. I loved him at the podium the
- 11:34other day. He's honest.
- 11:36You could tell Ben has empowered his coaches.
- 11:39You know, when it was Eberfluse, like today, Danny Rauscher was
- 11:42critical of Braxton Jones and of Darnell Wright.
- 11:47He just said Braxton Jones. That's got to be better.
- 11:51We set a standard here and we're going to have to make sure that
- 11:53standard is is met every single day.
- 11:56He said Darnell Wright Friday and the joint practice is
- 11:59outstanding. He reverted right back to what
- 12:02they don't like Sunday in the game.
- 12:04I like that Matt Eberflus would have been there.
- 12:07We're fine, set to execute. We'll keep working this guy.
- 12:12They're honest. And when Declan Doyle was asked
- 12:14about Caleb Williams and the offense and Luther Burden and,
- 12:18you know, Roma, dude, he gives you answers.
- 12:21I love the way this staff is comporting themselves.
- 12:24Were you shocked that Cairo Santos made a field goal of 57
- 12:26yards? He said that he worked in the
- 12:30offseason, Richard Hightower changing trajectory and working
- 12:34in the weight room, so I love it.
- 12:36So does that mean that'll that'll carry over to the
- 12:39regular? I mean, obviously circumstances
- 12:41and wind, etcetera, variables, but do they trust Santos more to
- 12:45kick long field goals now after what they've seen?
- 12:48Let's see what he does when it's 18° and the falls like a frozen
- 12:53rock, yeah? Good.
- 12:55Sure. Kathy, final thing from me and
- 12:58that is our buddy Mike in Waterloo, He calls in.
- 13:00He loves talking about the White Sox.
- 13:02We don't talk about the White Sox often unless they're
- 13:04relevant and it's been a while. They're playing better.
- 13:07There's a couple of young guys you can see Olson, Montgomery,
- 13:10maybe. Are we the trajectory in the
- 13:13American League Central? You got to tear it down and then
- 13:15build it back up. Are we at this stage now we're
- 13:18building back up as likely, or is there still maybe another
- 13:21level of awfulness before we get to that point for the White Sox?
- 13:24No, I do not think there's another level of awfulness for
- 13:28the White Sox. I really like what Chris Getz
- 13:30has done. Now Jerry has to empower him in
- 13:33the offseason that hey man, here's some money.
- 13:36They're not going to get Otani or Soto type deals.
- 13:40But there is no reason that there are 4 veteran signings
- 13:44that make decent money that stabilizes that thing and that
- 13:48the White Sox are flirting at 500 next year.
- 13:51No reason if they stay healthy. Make your sales staff at ESPN 1
- 13:541000 happy if that was the case. Cap must be tough, so tell.
- 13:58Me about. It I got it Cap, good to talk to
- 14:00you. I know you got a hard out, so
- 14:01we'll let you go good stuff and we'll talk to you with next week
- 14:03capper. Thank you buddy.
- 14:04Look forward to it. Have a great day, boy.
- 14:06Yep, see buddy David Kaplan ESPN 1000 as YouTube channel doing
- 14:11great numbers over there following all the Cubs games,
- 14:15all the Bears games, et cetera, et cetera.
- 14:17I never asked him about the kid up.
- 14:21It's alright, we didn't need to get his blood pressure going
- 14:22before he was doing ATV. Gotcha.
- 14:25Alright, so back to the news that Brett Mcmurphy broke, Yes,
- 14:28regarding the availability report, something that you and I
- 14:30have been standing on our soap boxes and bitching and moaning
- 14:34and letting the world know, well, whoever listens to us,
- 14:38that this is something that needs to be done.
- 14:40And it's not for Miller in Condon, it's for the student
- 14:43athletes. And I think Greg Sankey hit it
- 14:46out of the park with his comment as the reporting policies intend
- 14:50to reduce pressure on outside entities seeking participation
- 14:55information from players. It's enhanced transparency to
- 15:00protect the student athletes and the integrity of competition.
- 15:04It's exactly what we've been saying.
- 15:06I'm shocked that it took this long.
- 15:08I'm grateful that we're here, finally.
- 15:11And the Big 12 went deep into it before we kind of get into the
- 15:14nuts and bolts of it, because I think that is also an important
- 15:16piece, absolutely is of this story.
- 15:18Above and beyond how many? Times.
- 15:20You've been listening to Ken now for 30 years on the air.
- 15:23You've listened to me for 20 years on the air.
- 15:24How many times have we talked about how Vegas knows?
- 15:28How do they know? How do they know inside a
- 15:31college locker room that Player A is injured?
- 15:34How do you see a point spread move before anything's out
- 15:36there? And it's because in the old
- 15:38days, they had a bowl, they had somebody in there.
- 15:41It might have been a trainer, it might have been a staff member.
- 15:44A lot of times, yes, it was an athlete, It was a player on the
- 15:49team that'd be feeding this information.
- 15:52And it's a couple 100 bucks, maybe a couple 1000 bucks for
- 15:54the year. But these people were getting
- 15:56paid by people in the betting world for that information.
- 16:02You take it away because the shady side of that, it goes
- 16:05deeper and you're just opening up Pandora's box when you allow
- 16:09this. And why it took this long, I'll
- 16:11still never understand. But we're here and now the four
- 16:15major conferences have this as it should be now going forward.
- 16:19I think now everybody needs to replicate.
- 16:21I agree with what the Big 12 finally.
- 16:23Did because the SEC and the Big 10, yes, they put something out
- 16:26and we're grateful for that. But the Big 12 is going to
- 16:29require their athletic departments when it comes to
- 16:33football to put out a report on Wednesday, on Thursday, on
- 16:38Friday and on Saturday. And they they will designate the
- 16:41players and even you and I didn't ask for this much, for
- 16:45this much depth. They're going to be available.
- 16:47They'll be probable, they'll be questionable or they'll be
- 16:50doubtful or out. So 5 different categories.
- 16:53Now in the NFL, it says, you know, they're out with a knee or
- 16:56they're out with a shoulder. They don't they don't list that
- 16:58and they don't have to. We're not.
- 17:00Asking for that. Available, probable,
- 17:03questionable, doubtful are out. So you'll be able to see what
- 17:06happened from Wednesday. Oh, something got hurt in
- 17:08practice, or he was downgraded, or he was doubtful on Wednesday.
- 17:12Now he's probable on Friday. And then when the report comes
- 17:16out, that quarterback that you've been wondering about or
- 17:19that first string, a running back or tight end or whatever
- 17:23the case may be when it comes to skill positions, everyone will
- 17:26know. Everyone.
- 17:29There's transparency. Finally, Big 12, it took you a
- 17:33while to get here. I'm glad you're here.
- 17:36I would love to see the result of the vote because it was the
- 17:39Big 12 athletic directors that voted on this.
- 17:43The vote happened today. We'll see.
- 17:47I mean, was it unanimous? I find it hard to believe, but
- 17:51I'm not going to, I'm not going to pry anymore.
- 17:54And then basketball, they're going to put out report on the
- 17:57day of the game. Is that how you read?
- 17:59It will indicate if a players, if the player is available, game
- 18:04time, decision or out. That's something that also needs
- 18:09to be there and basketballs in in the same vein.
- 18:12Big 12, I mean Big 10 SEC Time to get your act together.
- 18:16Absolutely. Let's get this for everything.
- 18:18And there is availability reports, I believe for
- 18:20basketball. I think it's 90 minutes before,
- 18:22if memory serves. I remember a couple of things
- 18:24that have popped up. But it's something so simple, so
- 18:27easy. We've said it for years and they
- 18:29did it right. We don't need to know what the
- 18:31injury is. No, they are college athletes.
- 18:33That is fine, right? But to know it, if you're going
- 18:35to have a point spread on it, get away from the shady side of
- 18:38the business, get it out in the open.
- 18:41And is it going to change one iota?
- 18:43Has Iowa lost a football game because they've had to put out a
- 18:46participation? Room.
- 18:47No. Did anybody get an edge?
- 18:49No. Everybody has to do it.
- 18:50Yes, right. They all have to do it now.
- 18:53And it's awesome that they all have to do it now.
- 18:56And the Big 12, in my opinion, went above and beyond, and I'm
- 18:59not complaining. I think it's great.
- 19:01Thankfully, it's finally here that we're going to know.
- 19:05And it's not because I gamble on games.
- 19:07I don't gamble on games. I don't want this information.
- 19:10I want to take it away from the, you know, the internal portion
- 19:14of it from the pressure that comes on some of these athletes.
- 19:17You see it now that if you go to a player's Instagram feed or
- 19:21some of their social media, the A holes and they are a holes
- 19:25that attack them because, you know, I needed one more yard and
- 19:29you went out about or whatever. It's not right.
- 19:32But this is now one thing that makes that conspiracy.
- 19:35Look, sports wagering is here whether you like it or not.
- 19:37And I know a lot of you don't. I get it.
- 19:40But it's here. And I don't think it's going
- 19:42away. I really don't.
- 19:44But this, this transparency that's now going to be a part of
- 19:49the ACC and the Big 12. Well done.
- 19:54Got it. Got it.
- 19:55Todd wants to chime in. Then we'll get a break before
- 19:57I'll do that to tell you about Centurion Stone.
- 20:00But Todd, you're up. How are you?
- 20:02Good. Hey, I know this is early yet on
- 20:05this, but I'm just curious what happens when Iowa State and Iowa
- 20:08play now? Does Iowa have more information
- 20:12readily available than Iowa State does?
- 20:15And how's that going to work for other crossover games?
- 20:17Well, thank you, Todd. Appreciate the call.
- 20:19Fair question. I mean, in the past when I when
- 20:22Iowa State would play, I would put their injury report out and
- 20:24Iowa State didn't have to counter.
- 20:26We'll know as far we won't know Wednesday or Thursday or Friday.
- 20:32But as Trent and I just said, now the now the ball's in the
- 20:35other court, now the ball's back and it's been served back or
- 20:38volley back into the Big 10 and the SEC's court to maybe counter
- 20:41and do what the Big 12. Is doing so.
- 20:44You look back to last year and I had to put out their entry
- 20:46report before that game 90 minutes before this year.
- 20:51I believe the way that I understand it, Iowa State will
- 20:54still have to have their full injury report Wednesday,
- 20:56Thursday, Friday and Saturday even though they're on the road.
- 21:01Correct, Correct. Yeah.
- 21:03And here's the other thing. Who police's it?
- 21:07Yes. And what is going to be the
- 21:09penalty? Because the NFL, they don't
- 21:12screw around at. All they no, they don't.
- 21:14Draft picks, yes, but there's no such thing.
- 21:16And the Patriots played around with it for a long time.
- 21:19Well, they weren't alone. Yes, they absolutely.
- 21:21But Belichick? Yeah, but what?
- 21:24What's going to? What's going to be the
- 21:25ramifications? The penalties, you know, a slap
- 21:28on the wrist and do you push it right away I.
- 21:33Don't know. Especially for a team that's
- 21:36playing three games by the time we get to September 6th, that's.
- 21:39Bananas isn't it? It just blows me away.
- 21:41September the 6th. I mean there were, there were
- 21:44years, correct me if I'm wrong. This September 6th was week.
- 21:46One right? Oh absolutely I would.
- 21:48I'm reading a Niall Kinnock book right now.
- 21:50Their season began the last weekend in September.
- 21:54There's an 8 game schedule too. Sure.
- 21:57But bananas. Anyways.
- 21:59Well done, Big 12. Well, well done, well done.
- 22:02Let's talk about Centurion stone.
- 22:04They sponsor our buddy David Kaplan each and every week.
- 22:06We're grateful to them for doing that.
- 22:08Kapi, as you wouldn't anticipate, was fired up today
- 22:10with his Cubs rant. Centurion stone of Iowa.
- 22:14If you have a need for a manufacturer or natural stone,
- 22:17it's either inside the house or outside of the house.
- 22:19They do both. They've got 200 color and
- 22:22pattern combinations. They've also got natural stone.
- 22:25Of course they do for your interior exterior projects.
- 22:28Check them out online. Centurion Stone of Iowa can see
- 22:31see the reviews, you can see everything that goes along with
- 22:34it. Trent and I both highly
- 22:35recommend you visit the showroom.
- 22:37When we walked in, we certainly weren't anticipating what we
- 22:40walked into, just how great it is and how many different
- 22:43patterns and how much they're beneficial and they will help
- 22:45you. The showroom is at 555525 NE
- 22:5022nd St. in Des Moines, 5525 NE 22nd St. in Des Moines, and they
- 22:55do have Saturday morning hours from 8:00 until noon.
- 22:59Dave Syndicate on the Packers Nexus, the One Reach team we've
- 23:02kind of lost track of, but we'll catch up on that when we come
- 23:05back. Miller and Condon and Iowa
- 23:07Sports Radio Network. I'm.
- 23:22I'm Miller and Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:24Network. Yesterday we talked about the
- 23:27Milwaukee Brewers. We're going to talk about the
- 23:29Green Bay Packers. We've become all Wisconsin radio
- 23:32all the time. But we do beam into northeastern
- 23:34Iowa. That's right.
- 23:35And into the across the border on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:38Network. Dave Sinek and joins
- 23:40uspackerpreview.com year #30 Packer preview Sunday morning
- 23:44before the Packer games. Dave, good to speak with his own
- 23:47coverage.com. It's funny, we had our Brewers
- 23:50guy on yesterday. We seldom talk about the
- 23:52Brewers. But how can you ignore this
- 23:54team, right? And he said it's it's crazy.
- 23:56His podcast numbers usually just fall off a Cliff once football
- 24:00season gets here, and he says they're holding steady.
- 24:03The Brewers are quite a story. The Packers are gonna maybe have
- 24:06to do something to knock him off the front page.
- 24:09Yeah, well, certainly in the city of Milwaukee, that's that's
- 24:12a baseball time town through and through.
- 24:14And yeah, what a story. Since being, I think what, 24
- 24:17and 28 at the end of May, It's it's incredible.
- 24:21And of course, today is George Webb Hamburger Day.
- 24:23If they I saw that 12 straight, you know, it's something growing
- 24:26up in Milwaukee, my dad, my dad's office is right next to a
- 24:29George Webb. So there was napkins back then.
- 24:31That said, George Webb predicts the Brewers will win 12 straight
- 24:34games this year. It wasn't a promise for burgers,
- 24:37but that's what it turned into games later and they're ready to
- 24:40hand out a lot of burgers at the Brewers.
- 24:42Could win again this afternoon. And I heard somebody said it's
- 24:44actually a trend he's going to bet against them because they've
- 24:47had two opportunities this year. That's becoming a sports betting
- 24:50trend that they haven't hit that magic number of 12.
- 24:53Therefore the burgers aren't passed.
- 24:55So are they good, the burgers? Oh, they're, yeah, they're
- 24:58great. I mean, it's a, it's a kind of a
- 25:00divey chain. I mean, this is back in the 70s
- 25:03when I was growing up, but there was nothing quite like a George
- 25:06Webb greasy burger. Man, it was delicious.
- 25:08Beautiful. You guys know how to make a
- 25:09burgers up there and good cheeseburgers no doubt in
- 25:12Wisconsin. Hey, Dave, this Packers team,
- 25:15Ken and I, it feels like we're pretty solid in lock step or
- 25:19have our our heels dug in on our positions.
- 25:22With a lot of teams in the NFL and certainly the ones here in
- 25:25our region, the Packers, there is such a wide range of opinion.
- 25:29One in five in the division last year.
- 25:30Well, that can't happen again or can it could even get worse this
- 25:33year. Teams going up.
- 25:35The Packers, you can make an argument this team's going to
- 25:38win the division and they're 12:00 and 5:00.
- 25:39You can make an argument they're 7 and 10 and out of the
- 25:41playoffs. Can you remember a year where
- 25:44the range seems so wide nationally for a Packers team?
- 25:48No, I think you're right. I mean, generally you look at
- 25:50the odds in Vegas, they're the second favorite to win the
- 25:53North. And that that's logical, I
- 25:54suppose. But yeah, I think a lot of
- 25:57things need to go the Packers way to to be that team to win
- 26:00the North. I certainly think they're
- 26:02capable of that. But man, the way injuries are
- 26:05piling up right now, that if this becomes just one of those
- 26:07seasons, yeah, I could see 7:00 and 10:00.
- 26:10But I do think there's enough talent on both sides of the
- 26:13football that if they stay mostly healthy, they're going to
- 26:15be one of the better teams in the NFC.
- 26:17Jordan loves how how much concern is is his thumb, It's
- 26:21his left thumb. So obviously that's that's big,
- 26:24but what's the concern there? And how much practice will he
- 26:26miss Dave? Yeah, I think the concerns not
- 26:29long term at all. I think the concern is just
- 26:32missing out on a couple of really key weeks of practice
- 26:35where they're playing against the Colts during the week, this
- 26:38week, in the Seattle Seahawks next week and and some of those
- 26:42reps are really valuable. Now, five of his top six
- 26:45receivers are also hurt right now and not practicing.
- 26:48So he wouldn't be missing out on too much timing with those guys.
- 26:50But it's never good to miss valuable time, especially when
- 26:54you look at Green Bay starting out with two key home games in
- 26:58five days over NFC North against NFC North playoff teams.
- 27:01They can't afford a slow start, so level concern is probably low
- 27:05as far as Week 1. But I hate to see a quarterback
- 27:09come in ice cold. Packers best players on both
- 27:12sides of the football are going to end up missing most of
- 27:15training camp, but that's just not good.
- 27:17You mentioned the wide receiver and the injuries continue to
- 27:19pile up. Watson still not back coming off
- 27:22that torn ACL he suffered back in Week 18.
- 27:25Where is he is in his recovery? And boy, just kind of looking at
- 27:28it, it looks really bad in the wide receiver room injury wise
- 27:31right now. Yeah, it's suddenly it's gotten
- 27:34kind of ugly. It's interesting.
- 27:35There's just the reporting on Watson's timetable His father
- 27:38had over social media in the offseason said, you know, week
- 27:42middle of the season is our expectation.
- 27:44A Gouda Coons yesterday said, you know, he's going to go on
- 27:46the PUP to start the year, which means the first four weeks.
- 27:49And they already know that Watson and his camp are going to
- 27:52be pushing to be activated after week 4.
- 27:55They feel like he's really close.
- 27:56They're going to be smart about it.
- 27:58And I'm sure it'll be 6-7 weeks, but it sounds like Watson will
- 28:01be available for more than half the season.
- 28:04The injury I'm most concerned about is the Jayden Reed.
- 28:06Foot injury. That bubbled up late in practice
- 28:08last week. He was in a walking boot during
- 28:12the game on Saturday. His availability to start the
- 28:15season, to me is not a sure thing.
- 28:18Gottavian Wicks hasn't practiced with a calf for a couple weeks.
- 28:21Those calves could be tricky. Dobbs hurt his back yesterday in
- 28:24a collision with safety Evan Williams.
- 28:27So yeah, I mean, it's literally 5 of the tops.
- 28:30Only Matthew Golden of the top 6 is healthy.
- 28:33And we just kind of hold our breath every time practice
- 28:35starts to make sure he can get through it.
- 28:37But yeah, it's just a bit of weird rash in one position.
- 28:40They brought in a bunch of bodies.
- 28:42Not ideal, but it doesn't sound like anything is too long term
- 28:46at this point. What kind of camp is the rookie
- 28:48golden? Boy, he's turned heads.
- 28:52And not just his speed, the hands, the separation, the route
- 28:56running. They're pretty giddy in Green
- 28:58Bay about what they're seeing there.
- 29:00You're hearing about veterans, but their jaws just going, this
- 29:03is different than what we've seen.
- 29:05So I think there's a real possibility he's going to step
- 29:08right into a a pretty major role for this team.
- 29:10And obviously if he's the only healthy one, that goes without
- 29:13saying. But no, he is.
- 29:15He has turned heads for sure, and not just running at a speed
- 29:18that nobody else in that camp can do.
- 29:21So defensively, there's been highs or lows for this team,
- 29:25certainly recently there. What do you kind of rate this
- 29:28defense overall? I know the conversation starts
- 29:30with Jordan Love and the offense and and new weapons and all that
- 29:32stuff, but when you look at an all-encompassing view of the
- 29:35defense, how good can Green Bay be on that side of the football?
- 29:39I am a big believer in Jeff Haffley.
- 29:40I think he's going to be a head coach sooner rather than later.
- 29:43I think he took a team a defense last year that got off to a slow
- 29:47start but got better and better. And by the end of the year they
- 29:50finished as a top 10 unit in the NFL scoring defense.
- 29:54And so and they're really going to take you the ball away.
- 29:57A year into his system now, I think everybody kind of
- 30:00understands their role. They've got a guy now in Edger
- 30:02and Cooper who's on track to become one of those top
- 30:06all-purpose Fred Warner type linebackers and they look really
- 30:11deep on the defensive line. Couple of rookies from Georgia
- 30:14have really stood out. A six rounder, Will Brinson, an
- 30:17undrafted guy, Nazir Stackhouse. If those guys both look like
- 30:21they look so far, they're going to be 6 deep on that defensive
- 30:24interior, which is a big difference from what we've seen
- 30:28a year ago. And they're also really high on
- 30:30how Carrington Valentine's looks stepping into that outside
- 30:33cornerback role with Nate Hobbs out.
- 30:35You know, they get 2 of their top secondary guys out in
- 30:37McKinney and Hobbs, which is allowing some other guys to step
- 30:40up. So I just, I do believe in half
- 30:43Lee's defense. They take the ball away, they
- 30:45get pressure. Ultimately, it's going to be up
- 30:47to Rashawn Gary and Lucas Van Ness to impact the quarterback
- 30:51without having to resort to a lot of blitzing.
- 30:53If they can unlock those two guys this year, I think Green
- 30:56Bay's defense is going to be one of the best.
- 30:58Last thing I'll get you out of here on this, Brandon McManus
- 31:01found a home late in the year last year with the Packers.
- 31:04Obviously a Super Bowl winner with with the Broncos because
- 31:06he's 30, mid 30s now. What kind of campus he had?
- 31:11You know what, I always liked him.
- 31:13I thought he was accurate. I thought he had strength.
- 31:15I think it was more than just the altitude in Denver that led
- 31:18me to my belief that he is an upper echelon kicker.
- 31:21Has he still got it, Dave? Like he's missed one kick the
- 31:24entire training camp. He gets reported on all the time
- 31:28because they can't believe he just doesn't mess.
- 31:29So, yeah, he's he looks like he's in fine shape.
- 31:32And as I've said a lot as we've looked ahead to the beginning of
- 31:35this season, 2 positions that were in such flux last year for
- 31:38Green Bay. Thought they'd be a good team,
- 31:40but didn't know if they had a kicker, didn't know if they had
- 31:42a backup quarterback. And as the season went along,
- 31:44they find McManus Malik Willis steps in and shows that he's
- 31:47capable. Those are two key things that
- 31:50the Packers do not have to worry about this year.
- 31:53They just got to worry about staying healthy, it looks like.
- 31:55We will talk to you prior to week #1 zonecoverage.com, KFAN
- 31:59Sunday mornings, Packer Preview on KFAN every Sunday morning
- 32:03year #30 for that program. Dave, thank you as always for
- 32:07doing this. Appreciate it.
- 32:08Dave Sinican talk to you in a couple of weeks.
- 32:11Looking forward to it. See you guys.
- 32:12Yep, see you, buddy, Dave Sinican, as we check in on our
- 32:15final regional team, the Green Bay Packers.
- 32:17All right, Steve's been patient waiting through our little Green
- 32:19Bay conversation. Steve, thanks for being patient.
- 32:22What's on your mind? Well, hey guys, thanks for your
- 32:26reporting today on the betting issues and such in the injury
- 32:31reports. I'm a certified athletic trainer
- 32:33as well as a physical therapist. I got a lot of time in sports
- 32:35medicine on sidelines and I guess a couple of thoughts came
- 32:39to mind. One is you mentioned that you
- 32:42know, sports wagering is here. Well, it's always been here.
- 32:45I can remember stories of Johnny United and Dino Marchetti
- 32:49getting hit up by mobsters for injury information, right?
- 32:53So it's not gone. And I unfortunately, I think the
- 32:56difference is that the the leagues are now complicit with
- 32:59it for the sake of the money. And you have, you're never going
- 33:04to see Alex Terrace and Paul Horning suspended anymore for
- 33:07betting on a game. Probably.
- 33:11The other thing I wanted to say from an athletic training
- 33:13viewpoint is that, you know, you mentioned that, you know, they
- 33:16could get touched up. They get touched up for injury
- 33:19information. And yeah, I'm not so naive as to
- 33:21think that couldn't happen. But I will say from the defense
- 33:25of my profession, if any of them actually do it, they need to be
- 33:28fired nurses in their credentials.
- 33:30Revolt. Yep.
- 33:32Yep, because that's that's an egregious violation of our
- 33:34ethics. Yep, sure couldn't agree with
- 33:36you more, Steve. Glad it's been brought out of
- 33:38the shadows and out of the alleys.
- 33:40And now the transparency, he's going to be there.
- 33:42Long overdue. Steve, thanks for chiming in.
- 33:44Thanks for being patient. I appreciate you listening.
- 33:45Thank you. Yeah.
- 33:47Thanks guys. Yep, good to talk to you.
- 33:48All right, we'll take your time out.
- 33:49Trends, plays of the day. Our next Miller in Condon, it is
- 33:53the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Miller in Condon, welcome back.
- 33:56Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trends, Plays of the day, Circus
- 33:59sports sponsor. Those get to those here in a
- 34:02couple of minutes. John wants to chime in.
- 34:04He's been patient holding through the break.
- 34:06Hi, John. What's on your mind?
- 34:09Hi, I missed the Packers segment a short time ago and I wanted to
- 34:14find out what Finnegan said and I'd like to see what you 2
- 34:17gentlemen think about the Packers for this year.
- 34:19All right, John, appreciate the call.
- 34:22You said a trend. I think you're spot on.
- 34:24It's the widest range of that I can I can envision in the NFL.
- 34:29I could see him last yes in the in the north.
- 34:32And I could see love taking that next step and with the wider
- 34:35Siever group, but they're so banged up right now and I think
- 34:38that's what makes it so difficult.
- 34:40This is a team. I think we need to wait until
- 34:42the 1st week to September to really feel good about it.
- 34:45Can. They beat the line.
- 34:45I mean, overall, do they play the Lions week When they do, I'm
- 34:50not saying that game. Can they finish ahead of the
- 34:52Lions? Yeah, I don't know if I can get.
- 34:54There both coordinators. Yeah.
- 34:57Things start to go the other way.
- 35:00I want to see Campbell's messaging when he doesn't have a
- 35:02couple adults in the room. Yeah, what?
- 35:04The only thing is, is the coordinators were on staff with
- 35:08Detroit. Philly went outside the room.
- 35:10That's true. The.
- 35:10Organization. Kept it internal.
- 35:13Kept it internal. Jordan Love, Yes.
- 35:17Do you buy him or you do you not?
- 35:18Do you not buy? I like Jordan Love.
- 35:20I think I like Jordan Love more than most people.
- 35:22Not better than JJ McCarthy. We never had this call just yet.
- 35:28We gotta get to that. It's maybe tomorrow we'll do it.
- 35:30Yeah, we, we haven't touched. On JJ yet what?
- 35:32Well. Yeah, I like that defense.
- 35:35But do I love it? For the Packers.
- 35:37I, I, I'm in like, I'm in like with a lot of components, but
- 35:41one in five in the division last year that should have been oh,
- 35:43and six. Could have been if no, this
- 35:45should have been. You're right.
- 35:46Yeah. Speaking of the sayatosis we
- 35:48talked about earlier, I think I will have the Packers on the
- 35:52fringes of the playoffs when we make our official predictions.
- 35:56Will they be? So that's a 10 and. 79 and 8
- 35:59Yep, right in that range. Yep.
- 36:01I think they're lower than that. I don't love them this year.
- 36:05I if I had to go right now I would be Lions, Vikings, toss up
- 36:10Bears, Packers. But you know what?
- 36:13Bottom for me. Well, I like McCarthy better
- 36:15than you. Did you not see that scramble?
- 36:20It's like we got Mark Dornowski clips coming up again.
- 36:23Yeah, let's make some plays of the day.
- 36:25Circus Sports sponsored those. So we went two and two on
- 36:28Monday, we went two and two yesterday.
- 36:30Okay, so just losing juice day after day.
- 36:32Let's take four more picks today, all.
- 36:36Baseball. 3 baseball one in the WNBA.
- 36:39Let's start with that one. In fact, let's go a different
- 36:41order. 830 tip off tonight. The suddenly red hot LVA says
- 36:46are. They getting good again.
- 36:47They are Asia Wilson's playing at a high level.
- 36:50She had the first ever 3020 game in WNBA history a couple of
- 36:54games back. I'll leave the 2 1/2 in Vegas,
- 36:56Give me Las Vegas in pick #1. To baseball we go.
- 37:01I'm going with Horton and the Cubs plus 118.
- 37:03Now, I got duped yesterday because I've been brown, yes.
- 37:08And instead it was Assad. And you know what I do?
- 37:10I fade guys coming off the IL, as I will do tonight in
- 37:13Cincinnati, where Hunter Green gets the ball off the IL against
- 37:17the Phillies. I will take the Phillies -124
- 37:20and then finally a free square. It will happen in New York as
- 37:24the Yankees -150 against the Twins.
- 37:27These numbers again just become more and more ridiculous.
- 37:29Twins. Yankees historically.
- 37:32It's Joe Ryan tonight, you know, for your twins.
- 37:33That's doesn't matter. It's the Yankees 23 seasons now
- 37:37a baseball. The Twins are playing 514
