- 0:01Revelation chapter 3. Let us pray.
- 0:06Father, we thank you, Lord, for another day to come and to
- 0:09worship you in spirit and truth. God, we thank you for the
- 0:12ministry of prayer. We thank you for access to the
- 0:15Holy Scriptures. Lord, continue to teach us.
- 0:19Teach us your paths. Teach us your ways.
- 0:22Take us to new heights with you. God, allow us to feel the depths
- 0:26of your love for creation. God, I pray that you'll continue
- 0:30to draw more and more and more sons and daughters unto
- 0:35yourself. God, give us the mental
- 0:37fortitude and the wherewithal to respond.
- 0:40Father, I pray that we will be those that are marked by your
- 0:45grace and mercy and love. Lord, I pray that we'll be your
- 0:49hands and feet. God, your voice for this
- 0:52generation. Hide me and hide my words.
- 0:55Hide my thoughts. God, I pray that it'll be you,
- 0:59King Jesus, that gets all the glory forever and ever.
- 1:03I pray that you'll continue to push everything along according
- 1:08to the prophecies contained in this book.
- 1:11Lord, I pray that we will see you, Lord, high and lifted up
- 1:16above it all, the name that is above all names.
- 1:20God, we exalt your holy name. You are El Shaddai, El Eleon,
- 1:26you are Jehovah Rapha and Jehovah Nisi.
- 1:30You are our everything and we love you.
- 1:36Heal our bodies and heal our marriages.
- 1:38God, bring the prodigals home. Father, I pray that you'll
- 1:41continue to form a hedge of protection around us.
- 1:46We pray for the peace of Jerusalem, Father, and it's in
- 1:49Jesus Christ, holy and precious name that I pray.
- 1:52Amen. Let's start in verse 1.
- 1:59And unto the Angel of the church in Sardis, right these things,
- 2:08says he that has the seven spirits of God and the seven
- 2:12stars. I know your works, that you have
- 2:17a name, that you live and are dead.
- 2:22So he's writing unto Sardis, which is the church as dead, but
- 2:28it has a believing remnant. And we can go and look at these
- 2:31seven churches and we can look at church history all the way
- 2:35from the apostles all the way to the apostate church.
- 2:42And we can surmise which church we are in if we're looking at it
- 2:47in a fashion of time frames. But they all kind of
- 2:51intermingle. That's what you need to
- 2:53understand. But there is this Church of
- 2:58Sardis which a lot of scholars believe is the time of the
- 3:02Reformation. And you can see here that Jesus
- 3:06Christ is saying unto them. He's saying, listen, you have a
- 3:10reputation for being alive, but you are dead, but you need to
- 3:14strengthen that which remains. And he's talking about the seven
- 3:21stars that are in his hand. These are the pastors, the
- 3:24church leaders, the messengers that are shining like stars upon
- 3:29the lampstands was the lampstands are the church.
- 3:32And then you can see these seven spirits of God.
- 3:36And this is a reference again to Isaiah 11, verse 2.
- 3:41And he's talking about the Spirit of the Lord and the
- 3:44spirit of fear, the spirit of knowledge and understanding and
- 3:49wisdom. Friends, you can find all that
- 3:52back in Isaiah, and this is what is referenced.
- 3:56First to be watchful, strengthen the things which remain and are
- 4:01ready to die. For I have not found your works
- 4:04perfect before God. So he's counseling us as the
- 4:09church to strengthen ourselves in the Lord like David did.
- 4:16We need to return back to our first love.
- 4:19We need to return back to God, return back to the things that
- 4:24we were doing, return back to reading the scriptures, return
- 4:28back to being more of Mary than we are of Martha, sitting at his
- 4:33feet and being loved on and loving him, allowing him to wash
- 4:37our feet. We need to return back to the
- 4:41things that we were doing and strengthen those things.
- 4:44We cannot just be all program. We cannot just be those that go
- 4:49through the robotic motions of church.
- 4:52It has to be a place of this agape love, the phileo love.
- 4:57We have to be a place of the one another and one another, This
- 5:03Koinonia, this communion, this fellowship that God so
- 5:08desperately desires to see manifested within the church.
- 5:13Friends three, remember therefore how you have received
- 5:17and heard, and hold fast and repent.
- 5:20If, therefore, you shall not watch, I will come on you as a
- 5:26thief, and you shall not know what hour I will come on you.
- 5:30Of course he's talking about the return of Jesus Christ.
- 5:34He's talking about two people standing in the field and one
- 5:37taken 1 left behind. He's talking about the rapture
- 5:43of the church. He's talking about how quickly
- 5:45it will come. And then even for those who are
- 5:48left here in the seven-year tribulation, he will come for
- 5:55them at the end, friends. He'll come back and He's going
- 5:59to judge them. And there will be this
- 6:02apocalyptic Armageddon that happens at the end of the
- 6:07seven-year period. And people are just going to be
- 6:10believing that everything just keeps on going and that God is
- 6:14dead, or God is slack or that God is not going to hold to his
- 6:18promises. But he's telling the Church of
- 6:20Sardis, and he's telling us as well that we need to watch and
- 6:25we need to pray and we need to be ready so that we can escape
- 6:29the things that are coming upon the world.
- 6:31Friends, he's going to come like a thief in the night.
- 6:34And the irony of this passage is that this geographical land,
- 6:40this ancient city of Sardis had been overtaken twice by
- 6:44surprise. They were up on a high Cliff,
- 6:47thought that they were above any kind of attack.
- 6:50And the attackers found the secret way in the secret trail
- 6:55and they scaled the cliffs and they took them by surprise
- 6:59because they were lazy and didn't post watch.
- 7:04So this is not only applicable to them as a literal
- 7:10geographical place, but it is. Of course it's the irony that
- 7:14Jesus is coming back like a thief in the night.
- 7:17And if the strongman knew when his house would be broken into,
- 7:20he would not allow it. For you have a few names even in
- 7:28Sardis, which have not defiled their garments, And they shall
- 7:32walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
- 7:36So he's going to give them this white raiment, which is the pure
- 7:41innocence of Jesus Christ covering them.
- 7:44And they're going to stand before holy God, innocent and
- 7:47pure, because of the righteousness imputed to them
- 7:50from Jesus Christ in the perfect life that he lived.
- 7:54And there's a remnant, and God always has a remnant, friends.
- 7:57He always saves the remnant friends.
- 7:59That's what you need to understand is that there's never
- 8:03a time in the history of mankind that God does not have sold out,
- 8:10born again, blood bought believers that are going to bust
- 8:13heaven wide open. We're carrying the torch, the
- 8:16ecclesia. He told us that the gates of
- 8:18hell will not prevail against the Church.
- 8:23Five He that overcomes the same shall be clothed in white
- 8:27raiment. And I will not blot out his name
- 8:30out of the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before my
- 8:34Father and before his angels. So you need to understand a
- 8:40couple things here. And this is a really deep
- 8:43passage that we could spend a lot of time digesting and we
- 8:50could spend a lot of time studying.
- 8:52But suffice to say, friends, is that there is this passage and
- 8:59you can't do anything with it. And it's been mentioned many
- 9:02times throughout the Bible of this blotting out of the name
- 9:07from the book of life. And this stands in stark
- 9:12contrast to those who would say once saved, always saved.
- 9:19And this is where you get your theology that you can lose your
- 9:23salvation. We saw that all the way back in
- 9:26the book of Hebrews. Many times we've seen it
- 9:29mentioned this losing of salvation passage.
- 9:35And you need to understand that if you truly know the Lord, you
- 9:41will not want to do the things that break His heart.
- 9:46It is those that are abusing grace who don't truly know Him.
- 9:52And we could debate until the cows come home if it's once
- 9:57saved, always saved, or if you can lose your salvation.
- 10:01And there is enough proof for both sides of the coin a lot of
- 10:05times in the same fashion that we talk about pre tribulation,
- 10:11if we're going to be raptured before the seven-year
- 10:13tribulation or if we're mid tribulation, which means we're
- 10:18going to have to go through the 3 1/2 years before we're taken
- 10:21up and out. Or if you're post tribulation,
- 10:25which means that you believe we're going to have to go
- 10:27through the seven-year tribulation before we're taken
- 10:31up and out. And there is enough passages for
- 10:35any scholar to make his stand and to die on that hill and say
- 10:42that this is what the Bible says.
- 10:44And they're very dogmatic about things that God is somewhat
- 10:49mysterious about. And we need to keep ourselves
- 10:53open minded. We need to keep ourselves rooted
- 10:57and grounded in God's Word. We don't need to be closed off
- 11:02from what our brothers or sisters believe unless it goes
- 11:06against the plain teaching that is congruent throughout the
- 11:10entire Bible, which is Jesus Christ is the only way unto the
- 11:15Father. We need to agree upon that.
- 11:17That is the basis for everything that we believe that He is the
- 11:22only way unto the Father. You need to know that Jesus
- 11:27Christ came all man and all God. We did not give any ground on
- 11:34this doctrine, but when it comes to can you be blotted out from
- 11:40the book of life, it's as plain as reading it right here in this
- 11:45passage and many other passages throughout the Bible.
- 11:49But you need to understand that if you truly know the Lord, you
- 11:53will have conviction. And that is the sheer marker of
- 11:58someone who knows Him and who's walking with Him and who is in
- 12:03fellowship with Him and who abides in Him and He in them.
- 12:07We don't need to have a loss of assurance when it comes to
- 12:15following after the Lord. We don't need to be emotionally
- 12:19manipulated into doubting our salvation.
- 12:23Friends. It is just as toxic in that camp
- 12:27as well as the ones who constantly want you to doubt it.
- 12:32Friends, we work out our salvation with fear and
- 12:36trembling. Friends before a holy and and
- 12:39reverent God, that is who we give an account to friends and
- 12:44there are many who are well meaning who are trying to scare
- 12:47people in to heaven and they don't want to love them in to
- 12:52hell. And you need to understand that
- 12:54the motives in the heart behind both camps can be pure.
- 13:00They can be from a genuine place of care and compassion for
- 13:06souls, and they don't want you to have to go to hell and they
- 13:10don't want you to treat the grace of God as something to be
- 13:15trampled upon. But then you also have those
- 13:19from impure motives who are just trying to check a box and all
- 13:23they care about is numbers. And that is from a very, very
- 13:29debased mindset, friends. And you need to understand that
- 13:35we get rooted and grounded in God's Word.
- 13:37We believe what it says, we stand on what it says.
- 13:41We don't doubt any single part of it.
- 13:44It all makes sense. That all lines up, every single
- 13:48bit of it. And I do not believe that Satan
- 13:52can pluck you out of God's hand. Once the Lord has you, you need
- 13:56to remain in him and He in you. And do not renounce your faith
- 14:01and do not walk away from the faith.
- 14:03But if you have breath in your lungs, friends, it's not too
- 14:06late. You can come back to the Father.
- 14:08The only time that our fate is completely sealed is whenever
- 14:13you take your last breath. There's no purgatory, there's no
- 14:17praying people out of hell, and there's no baptism for the dead
- 14:20to get people out of hell. Friends, it is set.
- 14:24That is it. And as long as you have breath,
- 14:28it's not too late. Six, He that has an ear, let him
- 14:37hear what the Spirit says unto the churches, 7 and to the Angel
- 14:43of the church in Philadelphia, right these things, says He that
- 14:46is holy, he that is true, he that has the key of David, he
- 14:52that opens, and no man shuts and shuts, and no man opens.
- 14:56These are all the attributes of Jesus Christ.
- 14:59Every single time you see an introduction to a new church,
- 15:02you see a new facet of who he is.
- 15:05You see all of these beautiful attributes of our Lord Jesus
- 15:09Christ. He holds the keys, He opens the
- 15:12doors that no man can shut. He shuts doors that no man can
- 15:15open. Friends, He is the Alpha, the
- 15:18Omega. He is our everything.
- 15:20He's holy, He's true. He is the antithesis of
- 15:23everything that is worldly and carnal.
- 15:26He is our everything. He is Yahweh. 8 I know your
- 15:33works. Behold, I have set before you an
- 15:36open door, and no man can shut it, for you have a little
- 15:40strength and have kept my word and have not denied my name.
- 15:44So this is evangelism worldwide. Planes, trains and automobiles,
- 15:49missionaries getting out into the world.
- 15:51He opened the door for evangelism, friends, right
- 15:54before the apostate church. Now I'm behold, I will make them
- 16:08of the synagogue of Satan which say they are Jews and they're
- 16:13not, but do lie. Behold I will make them to come
- 16:17and worship before your feet and to know that I have loved you.
- 16:21So these are the Jews that are persecuting the early church and
- 16:27God here has a lot to say to him.
- 16:30And if you look in the Old Testament, you're going to see
- 16:32the Gentiles coming and worshiping before the Jews feet.
- 16:36And then here you see how God flips the script and he calls
- 16:40them the synagogue of Satan because they're a tool in
- 16:43Satan's hand, friends, to persecute the early church.
- 16:47And the Jews must come in the same way that you and I do.
- 16:51They must come in through the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 16:55Their lineage to Abraham does not guarantee their salvation,
- 17:00even though God has a very special plan for the ethnic
- 17:04Jews. You need to understand that they
- 17:08are not going to be saved just because of their position in
- 17:13Abraham. It doesn't work that way ever
- 17:16since Jesus came as the Messiah. But it is their blindness,
- 17:21friends, this leading many Gentiles into the fold.
- 17:24But then you go back and you read Romans Chapter 11 and
- 17:29you're going to find out that God has a very special plan for
- 17:32the ethnic Jews. And they're going to see the
- 17:34jealousy of all the Gentiles coming in.
- 17:37That's going to provoke them into realizing that they have
- 17:42murdered their Messiah. And they're going to come and
- 17:45they're going to believe in Jesus Christ, which is the
- 17:49entire purpose of the seven-year Tribulation, friends.
- 17:55And because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will
- 17:59keep you from the hour of temptation which shall come upon
- 18:03all the world to try them that dwell upon the earth.
- 18:06That is the seven-year tribulation.
- 18:08The church is gone up and out before the seven-year
- 18:12tribulation. You're not even going to see the
- 18:13church mentioned throughout the rest of the Book of Revelation
- 18:17after he addresses them in these first 3 chapters because of this
- 18:22very verse that you're reading right here.
- 18:26Revelation chapter 3, verse 10. He's going to keep the church
- 18:30from the hour that is coming to test all the inhabitants of the
- 18:34earth for seven years. 11 Behold, I come quickly.
- 18:38Hold that fast. Which you have that no man take
- 18:43your crown. So think about it, friends,
- 18:45these crowns that we're going to receive and we're going to throw
- 18:49them at the feet of Jesus because it's not about the
- 18:51rewards. It's all about him.
- 18:53It's all about worshipping King Jesus.
- 18:55Everything that we do is for him.
- 18:57He loved us first and now we get to know what love is. 12 him
- 19:03that overcomes. I will make a pillar in the
- 19:06temple of my God, and he shall go no more out, and I will write
- 19:10upon him the name of my God, in the name of the city of my God,
- 19:15which is New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my
- 19:19God, and I will write upon him my new name.
- 19:22So here in Philadelphia, they suffered many seismic
- 19:29earthquakes and they had to go out of the city to avoid being
- 19:34rained down the rocks and the stones from the buildings.
- 19:38And so he's saying that he's going to make them pillars in
- 19:42the Lords House and they would have the context of what he was
- 19:48saying and he makes it so personal unto them.
- 19:51But also this is for all time sake.
- 19:53This is for us. He's giving us a brief snapshot,
- 19:57which he's going to talk about more in depth at the end of
- 20:00Revelation of the New Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven,
- 20:042000 miles long and 2000 miles wide, 2000 miles high, friends.
- 20:10And you can see this beautiful cube coming down out of heaven
- 20:14and sitting on literal geographical.
- 20:16Planet Earth and He's going to make everything new.
- 20:19New heaven and new earth and the gates are never shut, friends,
- 20:23and it'll be nothing but Koinonia and fellowship forever
- 20:27and ever and ever. And there's no need for light
- 20:30because God is there. There's no need for a temple
- 20:33because Jesus is there. And it'll be everything that
- 20:37we've ever desired. Paradise, friends, forever and
- 20:41ever and ever. No more satanic revolt.
- 20:44No more of the temptation, friends, it will be paradise.
- 20:48It will be everything that our souls, our bodies, our spirits
- 20:54yearn for. Friends, he's telling us he's
- 20:58going to write a new name on us and he's talking about the city
- 21:03of God and it's coming down. What a beautiful verse 13.
- 21:07He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
- 21:10churches. 14 And unto the Angel of the Church of the Laodiceans.
- 21:19Right these things, says the Amen, the faithful and true
- 21:24witness, and the beginning of the creation of God.
- 21:29This is Jesus Christ, friends, dial it in.
- 21:33It says He's the Amen, He's the yes.
- 21:35He is faithful, friends, even when we are not.
- 21:38He is the true witness. He came and He gave us the good
- 21:42news, friends, and He is the beginning of creation of God.
- 21:46He was there with God before the beginning of any creation.
- 21:51They were fellowshipping God Almighty, God the Son and God
- 21:55the Holy Ghost, three and one in fellowship. 15 I know your
- 22:01works, that you're neither hot or cold.
- 22:05I wish that you were hot or cold.
- 22:08So here he is saying that he wishes they were refreshing as a
- 22:13cold drink, or he wishes that they were on fire and had the
- 22:17zeal of the Lord. But they are neither.
- 22:21They are tepid. They are lukewarm, and the irony
- 22:25of this is that the water that got piped into Laodicea came
- 22:31from a hot spring and by the time that it reached there 6
- 22:34miles later, it was just lukewarm.
- 22:39So you can see here that these are literal geographical
- 22:44churches on planet earth that had all of their own issues and
- 22:49Jesus Christ is making it personal to them.
- 22:52And then he's applying it for all time sake for us, friends.
- 22:5916 So then because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor
- 23:04hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.
- 23:07So he's saying I will vomit you out of my mouth if you were just
- 23:10lukewarm. This is a call for us to be on
- 23:13fire for the Lord, friends, to be refreshing to our neighbors,
- 23:18our brothers and sisters. This is a call for us not to
- 23:21become complacent, not to grow weary of doing good, not to just
- 23:26check boxes, friends. This is a call for us to
- 23:31actually engage in the ministry, to actually be those who are
- 23:36edifying each other and who are speaking words of encouragement
- 23:41over each other. Friends. 17 Because you say I am
- 23:48rich and increased with goods. I have need of nothing.
- 23:51And know not that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind
- 24:00and naked. So here they are thinking that
- 24:02they got it all together, that they have no need for anything,
- 24:06that they're good to go. And Jesus says, listen, in my
- 24:10sight, you are poor even though you call yourself rich.
- 24:15You are wretched even though you think of yourself as pious.
- 24:19You are naked, even though you think of yourself as clothed in
- 24:23fine raiments. He's saying you were miserable,
- 24:30You were poor and blind. 18I counsel you to buy of me gold
- 24:35tried in the fire, that you may be rich, and white clothing that
- 24:40you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness do not
- 24:45appear, and anoint your eyes with eyesalve that you may see.
- 24:50So here in Laodicea they were famous for the black wool that
- 24:54they produced. They were famous for the eye
- 24:56salve that they produced there in their medical community
- 25:01friends, they were a rich hub of industry.
- 25:05And here Jesus is saying none of that even matters in the end
- 25:09when you take your last breath. He counsels us to store up for
- 25:13ourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and rust and thieves
- 25:17cannot break in and destroy. Friends, we cannot take anything
- 25:21with you, but you can send it ahead.
- 25:23Friends, you sell the entire field to buy it, so that you can
- 25:28get the buried treasure, this Pearl of great price that Jesus
- 25:32paid for. Friends. 19 As many as I love, I
- 25:45rebuke and chasten. Be zealous, therefore, and
- 25:49repent. He gives us the remedy, friends,
- 25:52He tells us to not shrink back, to not murmur and grumble.
- 25:58In the chastening and in the discipline.
- 26:02He disciplines those that He loves.
- 26:04The discipline means that he loves you.
- 26:07If he hated you he would take his hands off of you and allow
- 26:11you to self destruct. But he would does not do that.
- 26:15He continues to chasten us and it proves his love for us.
- 26:20He tells us to be zealous and repent.
- 26:24Go back to the top. Go back to your rightful
- 26:27standing as the Son of the Most High God, as the daughter of the
- 26:31King of Kings. Friends, repent, go back, do the
- 26:36first things that you once did. Fan the flame, allow it to burn
- 26:44bright. Friends, become zealous for his
- 26:47house. Let it eat you up. 20 Behold, I
- 26:53stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and
- 26:59opens the door, I will come into him, and will Sup with him, and
- 27:03he with me. Jesus Christ stands at the door
- 27:08of His own church and asks to come in.
- 27:11He is a gentleman, friends. He never forces himself upon
- 27:15you. He asks to come in and to dine,
- 27:18and to Sup into fellowship, and to have Koinonia with you.
- 27:22Friends. And we must hear the knock.
- 27:25We must open the door. We cannot harden our hearts.
- 27:29We cannot sear our conscience. We can't afford to.
- 27:32Friends, the time is short. 21 To him that overcomes I will
- 27:39grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame
- 27:44and am set down with my Father in his throne.
- 27:47Do you not know that you will judge the nation's?
- 27:50Do you not know that you will judge the angels?
- 27:53And do you not know that you are the temple of God and He is
- 27:56going to allow us to be seated with Him in heavenly places in
- 28:01Christ? Friends, what a beautiful
- 28:03thought. We are the royal priesthood, and
- 28:08he told us that the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than
- 28:13anyone who was born of woman, and you must be born again. 22
- 28:18He either has an ear. Let him hear what the Spirit
- 28:22says unto the churches. Well in there friends, what an
- 28:28amazing chapter in God's Word. I hope that you've been blessed
- 28:35by it. It's all for you, every bit of
- 28:38it. Apply it to your life.
- 28:41Don't gloss over when you read it.
- 28:45Interpret it as God speaking directly to you.
- 28:53It's His voice for you. Every day you get to have a
- 28:57conversation with God Almighty. You pray and you're speaking to
- 29:04him, and then you read and he's speaking to you and then you
- 29:11have a choice if you're going to obey or not.
- 29:17What an amazing book that we hold in our hands.
- 29:20It's alive and active. It's the only piece of
- 29:23literature known to mankind that has the track record to be able
- 29:28to predict itself to the exact letter, to the exact degree.
- 29:38What an amazing, amazing book that we hold in our hands.
- 29:42It's reading you and it's interpreting you, friend.
- 29:46Don't put it down. Don't put it on a shelf.
- 29:50Just continue to get into it. And if you don't understand it,
- 29:54just keep reading. It's OK Eventually, as you
- 29:58continue to read it and read it and read it and read it again,
- 30:02eventually whatever passage that you don't understand, it will
- 30:06click and become crystal clear and it will be as if you've
- 30:09never read it before. And it never gets old and never
- 30:14gets boring. I look forward to studying the
- 30:18rest of Revelation with you. I hope that you have a
- 30:21wonderful, amazing day. God bless you.
- 30:27See you back here tomorrow.
