- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo! I'm Lucas, and this is Luna. Luna: Hi everyone! I'm so excited for today. Last time we did days of the week, and I finally remember Jumatatu is Monday. Lucas: That's great, Luna! Today we're going to talk about the weather. It's a super useful topic, especially when you're traveling. Luna: Ohh, I love weather words. What do we have? Lucas: Three main words: jua, mvua, and baridi. Luna: Jua, mvua, baridi. Let me guess: jua is sun, mvua is rain, and baridi is cold? Lucas: Exactly right! You're a natural. Let's start with jua. Repeat after me: jua. Luna: Jua. Jua. Lucas: Perfect. Now mvua. Luna: Mvua. Mvua. That one's easy to remember — sounds like 'moo-vuh', like a rainy cow. Lucas: I love that. And baridi. Luna: Baridi. Baridi. That sounds like 'bar ee dee'. Lucas: You've got it. Now, to make a sentence, we use 'kuna' which means 'there is'. So 'Kuna jua' means 'There is sun' or 'It's sunny'. Luna: Kuna jua. So if I look outside and see sun, I say 'Kuna jua'. Lucas: Exactly. And 'Kuna mvua' means 'It's raining'. Luna: Kuna mvua. And 'Kuna baridi' means 'It's cold'. Lucas: Perfect. Let's practice. I'll say a situation, you say the Swahili. Ready? Luna: Ready! Lucas: You step outside and feel cold wind. Luna: Kuna baridi. Lucas: Yes! Now you see raindrops. Luna: Kuna mvua. Lucas: Beautiful. And now the sun comes out. Luna: Kuna jua. Lucas: You're doing fantastic. Let's try a mini conversation. I'll ask 'Hali ya hewa ikoje?' which means 'How's the weather?' You answer with one of our phrases. Luna: Okay, ask me. Lucas: Hali ya hewa ikoje? Luna: Kuna jua. Lucas: Nice. Now let's switch: you ask me. Luna: Hali ya hewa ikoje? Lucas: Kuna baridi. I'm feeling a chill. So in Swahili, we can also say 'Nina baridi' for 'I am cold'. Luna: Oh that's good. Nina baridi. Kuna baridi. What about 'I'm hot'? Lucas: That would be 'Nina joto'. But let's stick with today's words. Let's review. Say each phrase after me: jua. Luna: Jua. Lucas: mvua. Luna: Mvua. Lucas: baridi. Luna: Baridi. Lucas: Kuna jua. Luna: Kuna jua. Lucas: Kuna mvua. Luna: Kuna mvua. Lucas: Kuna baridi. Luna: Kuna baridi. Lucas: Awesome. Now let's put it all together. Imagine you're on the phone with a friend in Tanzania. They ask 'Hali ya hewa ikoje?' You say 'Kuna jua.' They say 'Ah, nzuri!' meaning 'Ah, good!' Luna: So I'd say 'Kuna jua.' And they'd say 'Nzuri!' Lucas: Exactly. And if it's raining, you'd say 'Kuna mvua.' They might say 'Lete mwavuli!' which means 'Bring an umbrella!' Luna: Lete mwavuli. I'll remember that. Lucas: Great. One more time: what do you say when it's cold? Luna: Kuna baridi. Or Nina baridi. Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. Keep practicing these, and next time we'll learn more weather words. Luna: I can't wait. Thanks, Lucas! And thanks to Fexingo for making this possible. Lucas: Yes, visit Fexingo for more resources. Until next time, kwaheri! Luna: Kwaheri! And don't forget: Kuna jua, Kuna mvua, Kuna baridi.
