- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: Tristan, what's up, buddy?
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Just gotta wet my whistle because I need to say this very strongly.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Steven.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: I think you need to do something to open the pot up with.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, you know what?
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I think you're right.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Steven, you need to play the damn song.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: We're gonna play the song.
- 1:06SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:08SPEAKER_06: Rhythm through the main with a fury of West Texas wins.
- 1:14SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:16SPEAKER_06: What a beautiful sign! The Texas Tech Red Raiders riding right again.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: That performance deserves the song to be played.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: Um Texas Tech basketball, uh, only won by a Measley, 29 points at home against the number six ranked Kansas Jayhawks last Saturday.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Tristan, how great was that?
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: Steven?
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Could you believe what you were watching?
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Um you know, I didn't.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: I thought there was a good chance.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: I actually, when McCullough was um ruled out for the game, and I knew Dewan Harris was playing on a kind of a bum angle.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: I didn't think in hell we were gonna do what we did, though.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: I thought it was gonna be close no matter what.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: And I I'm not even gonna say that I thought that we were gonna win, but I thought it was gonna be a tight game, and uh they absolutely blew them out of the water.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Look, I I know a lot of uh salty Jayhawk fans are going to be licking the wounds with the ointment cream that is called our best players weren't even playing, but losing by 30 is not our best players weren't playing kind of loss by any means.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: That is what we call in West Texas at least an ass beating.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Um, that's just a flat out ass beating, my friends.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: You had a player that was leading the Big 12 in points per game and rebounds per game in conference that we held to five points on two of 12 shooting.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: That, of course, is that bum, Hunter Dickinson.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: That bum Warren Washington and Robert Jennings just absolutely ate his lunch.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: And I never would have thought I would have tweeted out Robert Jennings has outplayed Hunter Dickinson in a basketball game.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Bob Jennings, Bob Jennings is out here.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Steven, this is the same Hunter Dickinson that tweeted all that nonsense about Texas Tech, whenever uh what was it, Shannon was transferring.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he was he was like convinced he was about to go to Michigan until he went to until he didn't, and he blamed it all on tech.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's that same, it's that's that same young gentleman.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: It was, it was, and so he's he's the most unlikable player in college basketball.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think everybody agrees on that.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: He was unlikable in Michigan, he's been unlikable for years.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: So for him to then transfer to one of the most unlikable programs in the country just makes him even more hateable.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: So uh that was sweet, sweet justice for all of college basketball, not just Texas Tech, but I think everybody everybody was pretty thrilled to see him play the way he did in Kansas to lose by almost 30.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, about to say, I mean, I think it's kind of like you know, when anytime you're watching football and you're watching Alabama, you just want Alabama to lose, you know, because you're just sick of seeing them win.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Um, and Mr.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: uh Hunter also said that, you know, um, that you know, the way we perform is just how people get up for Kansas.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: But again, I would like to remind the young man that this was a 30-point loss.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: This isn't just getting up for the game.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Granted, yes, I mean it's Kansas.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: You are gonna, you are gonna, you have a powerhouse in town, you have a blue blood in town, but once more, that was a drubbing that you cannot just wipe that off to like some outside factor like that.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Because I'm a sicko and I feast on opposing teams tiers after we beat them.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: I I went on Twitter, I looked at some KU accounts.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Um I listened to I listened to some KU pods.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, there you go.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: I mean highlights, uh games, the the whole thing my favorite copium is that teams just shoot better against Kansas.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: That's like it just happens.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Like clearly, teams are just better, they they shoot better from three whenever they play Kansas, and it's because they're Kansas, it's not for any other reason, it's just because they're Kansas and they have to get up for it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Hilariously, you know, I remember for a while they were like, God, everyone's just draining threes against us.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: And normally our response was, Why are we not protecting the perimeter?
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Why aren't we?
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Why do you know we not have their our hands in their faces?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I think Kansas fans are kind of neglecting the fact that there's defense to be played in this sport, and if you don't play good defense, you make it easier for the other team to score.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: And that's not just a basketball thing.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: I uh, as far as I know, I'm not an expert, but that's a pretty general rule through most team sports.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: Play defense and good things happen.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Kansas did not, uh but the I mean the bigger thing here, I was I thought Hunter Dickinson was gonna have himself a game.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: I thought he was gonna do what he was gonna do, but I was more scared of some of the other guys on this team the KJ Adams, the Dewan Harris, those guys.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: KJ Adams, I I did some research because he's one of my he's probably my favorite player on Kansas to watch with on a very unlikable team, but he's just like a hustle guy and plays well when it matters.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: In every Big 12 win that they have this year prior to the Texas Tech game.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: Well, that wasn't a win, but in every so I guess this still applies.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: In every Big 12 win that Kansas has this year, KJ Adams has gone 41 for 59 from the field.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: He's shooting 70 in games that they win.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: KJ Adams went one of 10 against Texas Tech.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, he had a legendarily awful game against the Red Raiders.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: And so that was another piece of it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: Dewan Harris, of course, their starting point guard, was also playing on a bum ankle.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: He went two for eight.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: So when your three best players have games like they did, you're just gonna get blown out of the water.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And uh, you could definitely say, as the kids do these days, that the defense was in their bag that night.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Um, not just them.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: The Texas Tech crowd, the faithful, was rowdy.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: And I always love putting our games, especially a game like that, on prime display.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: You're on ESB and Mothership on Monday night.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: You know, it's the big Monday at seven o'clock, you know, you're the you're the prime slot for the evening.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Everyone gets to see what Lubbock is um whenever we are putting together the teams we are, you know, like this the the crowd is showing up, and they have been for the past half decade at minimum.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: And it's everyone notices, it's not just they don't just brush off Tech Tech fans anymore, but I think a lot of it has to do with the consistency throughout the years.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: But dude, it is an environment where you have 16,000 people shouting down onto that little court, like it is it is a sight to behold, and you gotta get some earplugs because damn, it gets loud even through the TV.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the new trend is to get smaller arenas and have sort of a louder environment with a 7,500 to 8,000 seat arena.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: But when you get 15,000 on a Monday night on Big Monday against the number six team in the country in a wide out, uh, it's you can't beat it.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: It's so electric in there.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: The Raider riot.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: Um, obviously, this is a testament to how we built this program up and uh the fans that just keep showing up, not just for Kansas.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: They've been showing up for at least the majority of Big 12 play, and uh it's just such a huge deal.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're I think 12 and one, 13 and one at home this year.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: It's it's such an advantage.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we our only slip up was was a real head scratcher.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: We don't need to bring it up, okay?
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Uh flu game, flu game the the flu game of 2024.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Yes, um, so but also the crowd got some ire from the KU fans.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm talking about?
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, the the the Kevin chants, you know, I like it.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: I like it.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: It's what college sports are even bad.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: What was it?
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: We want Kevin, was that wasn't that?
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we want Kevin.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: We want Kevin, we want Kevin.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I I think there was a little FU Kevin um as well, which is normal for an e-conference transfer.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: Listen, I people take what the student section does way too seriously.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, absolutely, way too seriously.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Like their students in college, they're going to chant profanities, they're going to be loud, they're going to be obnoxious.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: That is what feeds into the environment and the home court advantage.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: So the the student section's whole goal is to get in the players and the coaches' heads.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: So whenever there's an FU chant, call it classless, call it whatever you want.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: It's college sports.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Get over it.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: I there was a clear frick you.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Like you could hear it blatantly through through the speakers.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I was like, Thank you, ESPN, for not bleeping this right now.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Um I think ESPN actually did go prior to the game.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: At least I saw a couple tweets that were saying that they went prior to the game, uh, because they chanted FU Kevin when he came out of the locker room, and ESPN came over and was like, Stop, please.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: Please, please, stop it, please.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so whatever, whatever.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: They're kids, they're no, absolutely, dude.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: And obviously, it wasn't just the crowd, there wasn't just the team the crowd got into the heads of.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Mr.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Self.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Who launched Billy Boy, you got a launch, dude.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Homie, Billy Boy keep it together, couldn't keep a cool head.
- 10:29SPEAKER_03: Billy Boy got ejected.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: I think that was the first.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: I think I saw it was his first time as the Kansas head coach was ejected, or maybe the second time, but he doesn't get ejected often because the big we all know the refs love big Bill self and and Kansas.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so for him to just get ejected there, clearly Kansas was just getting beat down.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't think what he didn't, it's not like his actions were anything egregious.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: It's not like he was going after the ref or anything.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: Clearly, something he said pissed him off, and uh, and they sent Bill back to the locker room early.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: It wasn't very nice.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Do you think he did it for his team, or do you think he was just legit frustrated?
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, you know, take take his word for what it is.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: In the post-game press conference, he said he wasn't trying to get ejected, uh, and he quote unquote does not bitch and complain.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, which, you know.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Well, that's the the the ejection would say otherwise.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: And really, all your actions during the game would say otherwise in basically every other situation.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: But uh it's not like other coaches don't bitch and complain.
- 11:31SPEAKER_03: Like everybody bitches and complains in basketball.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: So I don't know, that was a little ridiculous.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: It's very likely he said that's effing BS.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Like that's and that's gonna get you ejected if you say that straight to a ref's face.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: So that's that's my theory.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: That's that's that's my uh fan fan theory right there.
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: So that was that was good.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: It was pretty much the perfect outcome, the perfect scenario.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, but we've only talked about Kansas and the crowd.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about our players.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: Darien Williams.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Darien Williams, 12 for 12 from the field, 30 points, 11 rebounds.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Steven what is that is that good?
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Like what's it's pretty it's pretty good.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: What's the ratio on that?
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: You know, it's 100% shooting.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: Pretty good.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: Do you want that?
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: It's a double-double, it's hitting a 30 piece.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: Um that might have been the best individual performance I've seen from a Texas tech player.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: There's been a lot of good ones since we've been fans.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: Derek Culver's had some real gems, Matt Mooney's had some gems, Keenan Evans has had some gems, but to go 100% for the floor, you did not miss a shot.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: There were threes, there were post-ups, there were tough hook shots, I mean, there were putbacks, he did everything, and I he played the perfect game.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: What did he eat for breakfast that day, dude?
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: And you you really you really know like how that kid earned Mountain West player of the year.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: You know, that it's the dude is a baller and obviously a gamer.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: You know, he he he came in with a mission, and I think it's safe to say it was accomplished.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: He's a sophomore, by the way, Darien Williams.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: Uh it was unreal.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: And he played good defense on top of it.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's he's had to step up in a way that he wasn't expected to when Devin Cambridge went out for the year.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: He's had to kind of play a uh a different type of role than maybe what he was supposed to play initially, and he has absolutely embraced it and fed off of it.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: So uh I cannot be more thrilled with how Darien Williams has been playing this year.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely, man.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: He's been such a great ad.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: What did he what an awesome transfer portal get?
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: And I also a foreboding for what you can expect Grant McCastan, the kind of the caliber and type of dude he's going to attract to this program from not the high school, but from other colleges.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: And that's obviously a huge part of the game now.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: So golly, man, just uh uh what more can you say than star?
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely unreal.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Um, I mean, he was kind of your scoring.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: You know, Warren had a good game uh until he kind of got injured there at the beginning of the second half.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: We'll hit on that in a second.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: Um, but pop Isaacs, one of nine from the field, Kerwin Walton, two of seven from the field, Joe Tucson, two of nine from the field, and you beat Kansas by 29 points.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: That's ridiculous.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it's I guess it was kind of hard to notice that everyone else was slacking since everyone's eyes were just kind of black holed to uh to Darien.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: So uh, I mean that's but that's what teams do, dude.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's why you have teammates to pick up the slack.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: So uh it's just uh maybe an off night for the other guys, but uh it's good to see that other people are able to pick up the rest of the uh the the slack.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the offense clearly kind of struggled a little bit in the second half.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: It didn't really matter with how good of defense we were playing, and I think that kind of made Graham McCasslin a little happier than what he would have been uh normally if we just won this game strictly on offense, because that's been the majority of this year, is our basketball team really playing good offense and beating these teams in the 80s and the 90s and the hundreds.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: They won on both sides of the floor and really played good defense the entire time uh against this Kansas team, which is far from a slouch.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So and KU is the high scoring team in the conference, right?
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: They're out there.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's fun, it's fun.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: That was that was euphoria watching it.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Gosh, and just seeing the the aftermath of it has been glorious.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: And dude, we are right back in it, Steven.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: We are right back in the Big 12 hunt.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: We are just one game behind Houston and Iowa State.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: We're tied right there with Baylor, but yep, dude, like our hopes of winning the league, like Darien said right at the conference, you know, this isn't it.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: We're here to win the league, it's still alive and well.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: It is, it's alive and well, and you have a really good opportunity here coming up this weekend against Iowa State.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: A uh an opportunity, a really tough opportunity, uh, against a top 10 Iowa State team in Ames at Hilton Coliseum.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Um, let's talk about Warren.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Warren got hurt in the second half of the Kansas game.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, something in his foot, you could see it when it happened, it clearly was affecting him.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: He had to go out and sit out.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: He did.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: He he he came back in the game, uh, made a few good plays, actually got a dunk in there after hurting his foot.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: But you could tell, I mean, after every sort of uh after after the ball stopped, he was just like wincing and clearly limping on that foot.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: Um, there's no word yet.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Grant McCasslin today and his presser said uh he's a game time decision for the Iowa State game.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: So that's at least a good sign that it's not a season ending or something, you know, crazy injury.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: But you know, big guys and feet injuries, it's just you you just don't you just get a bad taste in your mouth.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean that's like you said that's good news that it's day-to-day.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Uh we we even know that he's he's not like automatically out for a week or whatever the trainers are gonna stick him out for.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: But uh, I mean, you gotta love the toughness though, dude.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Like that's that's what real athletes do, man.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: They don't get hurt and come off, like they keep rolling because that's what the team needs.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: So uh you can hurt you, you can cry about it later, right?
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: We got a game to win.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: So I really love seeing him get right back out there and do it.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, if you're asking me today, which is Thursday, this pod will come out on Friday.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't think he plays against Iowa State.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: I and I think it's more of a precautionary um I potentially a week or two or three injury, which isn't ideal, but I don't I don't foresee Warren coming off of this injury and playing against Iowa State.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: Um what what is that?
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: It's obviously a huge hit.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: It's obviously a uh a game you want to win considering you're still fighting for the Big 12 championship here, and Iowa State is one of the main contenders.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: But man, I mean, at this point, you have to have bigger goals in mind, and that's getting your team healthy and ready for March.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely, dude.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: And that's that's the goal now, right?
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Um, winning the Big 12 championship would be awesome.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: It's the best team in the league.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's the best league in the in the in the country, and having that sort of hardware is irreplaceable, but the only thing that could top it is obviously an awesome run in March.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: So uh we gotta we gotta we gotta nurse him up.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean we're not kidding ourselves.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: Warren Washington is the most important player for the success of this team.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, just there's nobody that can replace him.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: I I I am loving how Bob Jennings is playing lately, but you don't have another seven-footer, you don't have a guy who is so good on both ends of the floor and so experienced.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's 24 years old, he's been in college basketball for six years.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: So we won't make the get a job joke for our own guys.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're just not, you're just not gonna, if you don't have Warren Washington, you are a much, much different basketball team.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: And a basketball team that fair, frankly, isn't extremely competitive in the Big 12 or beyond.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: So, number one priority should be getting this guy healthy and ready to go.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Completely agreed.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: And plus, how how how could you possibly post the his face superimposed over the first president of the United States on Twitter if he's not healthy?
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: You know, that's one of that's one of my favorite memes that I've made.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: I'm a fan as well, sir.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: It's a good one.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: The president, uh, get healthy, get ready to go.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: If it's not against Iowa State, I hope it's soon, uh, because we desperately need that guy for the future.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna say, even without Warren, that Iowa State is an automatic L because I don't think you can count out a Graham McCastlin coach team.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: He's proved that this year.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and Iowa State is not particularly big.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, they do are they're just a beast.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're just a beast of a team.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: And even if you had Warren, this one was gonna be tough.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: And we're we're in the Hilton, right?
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: So that place is a scary place to play in the Big 12.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: Granted, every place in the Big 12 is pretty darn scary to play in, but that that one's on the upper echelon.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be a battle.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: So let's let's shut them up at the line again if we can, uh, from three-point.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: But uh it's gonna be a battle.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a battle.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: It's just it is what it is.
- 20:05SPEAKER_03: It's one of the best defensive teams in the country.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: They're right up there with Houston and Yukon as just a beast of a defensive team.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Every player plays hard non-stop.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, rebounding, hustling, loose balls, everything.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: That's what makes Iowa State so good.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: They don't let teams score on them.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's just plain as day.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: That's why they're a top 10 team in the country.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: They're winners of six of their last seven games.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: They currently are tied with Houston for the lead of the Big 12.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Um, what do you what are you what are your kind of vibes going in?
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: I am hoping for Cycle and Larry to taste his nutsack.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm hoping for.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: But uh right now, I I I'm not really counting on a win, but I do I am excited to see how competitive we are without Washington to see if we can put together some sort of plan without him that is competitive.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: But uh, I'm not my hopes are high right now, man.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but they're just not.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: No, and I don't I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, this is you're going in undermanned potentially.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: Like again, Warren isn't ruled out for the game, but I think it's pretty unlikely that he is going to play.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, the one thing about this Iowa State team is they're not particularly awesome on the offensive end.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: They win with their defense, they do have some scores.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: Um, four players are averaging 10 plus points a game on this team.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: They have a really good freshman in Momsilovich, but it is uh if you play your defensive style and your brand of basketball that Texas Tech has been known for really over the past couple of years, not necessarily this season, but over the past several years, um, I think you can play with anybody.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: And we proved it against Baylor, you know.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: Like go back to the Baylor game where we played without Warren Washington.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, we shouldn't have had a chance in the world against.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: That team without Warren.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: And we made it a game for three-fourths of it, if not, you know, almost the whole game until they pulled away at the end.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: But yeah, uh it yeah, I you know, if we win, this is just an extra bonus for me at this point.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if we win, dude.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's a that's a huge feather in the cap, man.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: Because you're you're you looked you're launched into the first place of the Big 12, which is obviously a statement in itself and uh metal for us.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Um, but two, like like we just said, you know, you're able to form a game plan and be competitive, well, obviously, extremely competitive, more like dangerous without Washington.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: So that's just just kind of the hope and goal here.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: After Iowa State, you have five straight unranked Big 12 teams that you play on the schedule.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: You have TCU, UCF, Oklahoma State, Texas, and I think West Virginia.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: So those are all five of those are winnable games.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: And honestly, if you're like, if Warren's on the cusp, I would say sit them out, you know, potentially take the L and Ames.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: Not that this team's gonna automatically take an L no matter what, but uh purposefully put yourself at a disadvantage to rest Warren against Iowa State and then approach these next five games with just a killer mentality and go win all five.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Tear him up.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: No, I I I'm in full agreement on that.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: So awesome stuff from the men's basketball team.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, really hyped about Grant McCasslin.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: Also, by the way, he is tied with Bobby Knight and Mark Adams for the best 24 game start for rookie coach at Texas Tech.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Umte and six, not bad at all.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Not bad.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: And it was fun.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: See, it's always fun seeing his whole family there with him, too.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Like his son going crazy was always a lot of fun to see.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: So it's just just a such a great guy.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: I I really like having him in Lubbock.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: Hope he stays for a long, long time.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: Um as well.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Anything else basketball related?
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: Vibes are high.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: We are good, I would say.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Vibes are high.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Moving on to football.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech hired a new offensive line coach, announced today that uh it looks like Clay McGuire going to return to Lubbock.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Not related to Joey, by the way.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: But how do you know?
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: He's not, he's not.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: I've seen tweets, of course, Twitter.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: Sometimes it lies.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, I don't think they're related.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, but he's coming over from Washington State.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: He was a former Texas Tech player from 2000 to 2004 under Mike Leach and a uh tech former Texas Tech staff member on a couple occasions.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: He was kind of a GA, he was uh uh film guy right after you know he his playing career.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: He coached a little bit of special teams, he then went on to East Carolina, he was in Washington State, he's been a couple other different places, but he's back, he's so back.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, how how do you feel about this?
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Because I really don't know how to feel about this because I just you know, with these position coaches, obviously you're just not really gonna know who these dudes are.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's yet I feel like you have to be incredibly plugged into the position coach game to understand who is what in these pieces being moved.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: I'm just still confused at the handby thing.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: Nothing has really come out about why he was let go, uh, especially the timing.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: It's just still so weird why he was let go at the time that he was.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, I think the thing about all this is that we're just not gonna know what happened.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: If we're talking about why it happened, and yeah, and I I'm looking, I'm looking at the Don Williams article right now, and it says that he was fired without cause, and we owe him a lot of money.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Like, is it just so he just started year two of his his contract uh this past February?
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: So he's he's owed a quarter of a million dollars.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Like, what the heck happened, dude?
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's just it's like it could it be as simple as just a change or like a different mentality on the way to go with this position group from Maguire and Hambi.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: So it's just really hard to tell, and it's really weird.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Well, it's do you think this is the guy?
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Last week you made a comment that uh maybe Maguire has a guy lined up that he wants to slot in instead.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: Do you think this is the guy?
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: This could have been his guy.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: This could have been his guy.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: I don't I have no idea.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: I know there are a few different guys in the running for this positional coaching spot, but I mean, Clay McGuire, he's got obviously ties to Texas Tech.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: I think that's important to Joey, despite what some fans feel about that.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: Um, and he's just uh he's just a good coach.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: Like he's always been a good coach.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: His his position groups have always done well at his prospective spots, USC, Washington State, East Carolina, all that stuff.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: Um, and I, you know, I'm cool with it.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's hard for me to like really put into words like how I feel about this because it's just such a weird spot.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it really is.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Did we hire him away from anything?
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Because it says right here.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we hired him away from Washington State.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: He was on Washington State staff.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: He was on okay, that's that's who he was on right now.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, okay, because I guess he was at Texas State before then.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Um, because the guy's been all over the place.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Like to go then to go from like USC, uh Washington State, and then Texas State, or and Texas State mixed in there, like what what?
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: So I'm yeah, I don't really know what to think about this, but uh hopefully Joe McGuire has a plan, and obviously Zach Kitley has to probably give a thumbs up on it as well.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: So I guess they're feeling mutually good about it, but uh I guess we just wait and see.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Again, it's just a positional coach.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, not to make too much too lightly of that, but it it's I guess we don't have to know too much about it for him to be a really good coach, you know.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean, clearly the air raid is in this guy's DNA.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: He not only played in it, but he coached in it under Mike Leach as well at Washington State, and then under Cliff Kingsbury in 2018 on that staff.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: So he's he knows the air raid, he knows how the offensive linemen need to play in an air raid.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: Zach Kitley clearly wants to run a form of the air raid.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, this was kind of when you look at all those facts, yeah, this guy makes sense uh to hire on.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: And I I obviously I'm sure there's gotta be some sort of recruiting angle to this, and uh hopefully this guy has deep roots in the state of Texas because, dude, I saw a publishing from the Dave Campbell that Texas Tech was number one in the state for Texas recruits.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: 20 out of 21 of our high school recruits are from the Lone Star State.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: That's like significantly more than any other major program in the state.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: And I personally think that's really good news, especially seeing that the best player is from Texas as well.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: So I think planting our flag, you know, at in our home state, such a talent-rich state, is a big deal.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: And obviously, I think that's gonna pay dividends.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: I hope that guy piles onto that.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean it's it's also about development.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, you want to get these guys in your building first and foremost, but you also need to develop them.
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: You're taking in uh a senior in high school and you need to develop him into a college high-level college football player.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: And, you know, if Joey didn't think Hambi was the right guy to do that, and he thinks McGuire is the right guy to do that, uh, I'm all for it.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Uh again, it's not like we've had great offensive lines against uh with Stephen Hambi.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: So hopefully we get an upgrade here.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's it's kind of funny how we were discussing a little bit last week and towards the end of the season, or maybe our season recap saying that.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Would you be surprised if heads rolled?
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Is this like a super duper delayed head roll?
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, to be honest, I don't know.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: I don't know what this is such weird timing to do something like that.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: So I know I there's some behind the scenes.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: That's what makes me think there's some behind-the-scenes stuff that's going on, or maybe he was having discussions prior to the Hambi, you know, letting him go with Clay McGuire or with another candidate that made him feel better about just going for it and trying to upgrade at that position coach.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: So um, but sometimes it's hard things you need to do as a college football coach.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: And uh we'll see if it pays off.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Lubbock.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Well, welcome back to Lubbock, other Maguire.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: Welcome back to Lubbock, Clay McGuire.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: Um Patrick Mahomes.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Can we just hit on this for a second?
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: Have it all.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: Third Super Bowl in his young career.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: He's 28 years old.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Three out of four Super Bowls.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: He has won.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: Um, he is on track to be the greatest NFL player of all time.
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: He is not the greatest NFL player of all time yet.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I mean, what is it like for you watching him win Super Bowls?
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: It's funny that that's not even hyperbole to say that he's on track to being the greatest football player of all time.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's it's really crazy to be to be in this moment, like knowing you're watching a Michael Jordan on the football field, you know, and just to know that you are watching the greatest player of at least of this time, and knowing that you are the same age as him and went to the same college as him and watched him every Saturday after a whole bunch of keystones, like that's the same kid you saw out there running for his life dropping bombs on dudes, dude.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: It's it's a surreal feeling, isn't it?
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: Like, don't you kind of isn't that kind of something that kind of trips in your brain?
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: You're like, Am I living in a simulation where this guy went to Texas Tech and it was at the same time we were there?
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: It's crazy.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: I I mean, I think that's the first I don't I don't really think about that first and foremost.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: I do think about the countless Saturdays that we were just like, thank goodness for Patrick Mahomes, because we would be down by 50 points right now if it wasn't for him.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, but just to see his success, his con I mean, the only people that have a bad thing to say about him are the people that just don't like how much Kansas City wins.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: That's really that's really it.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: And to have to have a representative for the university do what he's doing, and clearly like I think a lot of people after the Super Bowl were like, okay, he's already the goat, put it there.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: He's not there yet.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna say he's there yet, but he is absolutely on track and is having one of the best starts to an NFL career, probably of anybody.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, absolutely.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: And you see all the side-by-sides between him and Tom Brady, you know, where they have you know the same amount of of wins, uh Super Bowl wins, but not the same stats, you know.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Like clearly, clearly, Patrick Mahomes is just a special talent, and it's such it's so awesome to that on top of it.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: He's he seems like such a genuinely good dude, and he seems like such a normal dude, you know.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: He just seems so normal, and I mean that in the nicest way, like I mean that as a compliment.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: That he just seems like a super normal family man that is just an awesome dude, and I cannot wait to see what Adidas does with him and tell me like I feel like we're gonna see that everywhere when that happens, you know.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: And I think it's gonna be really cool, and I think it's gonna be a good thing for the school uh to get that sort of uh to get that in front of everybody and get that in front of potential athletes and students, and just I I never miss a moment.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Whenever any, you know, anytime one of my students or a coworker asks me, like, who are you pulling for the Super Bowl?
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I have to pull for my guy, Backham Tech, Patrick Mahomes.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: So that's always my answer, and I'm always gonna be saying that.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's a cool feeling.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's fun, it's fun rooting for a guy, uh, as as much as he wins, and uh, it's just it's just good.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: It's it's cool.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Congrats to Patrick, congrats, congrats to the Chiefs for uh getting another one, man.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: Keep it rolling, keep it going, dude.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: It's it's so funny because it's I totally get it because you know, people are just making the logical argument, like I just I don't want to see the Chiefs do it again.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: It's just you know, I don't want to see the same team over and over again, which is funny because it's like I want it every single time because I want him to be the GOAT, but I completely understand why people are just getting fatigued on it because I'd be I'd be the same way, you know.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Just like, all right, yeah, let's get it, let's get some different teams in the mix here, you know.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: But it's I totally just want to see him win every game every time.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely 100%.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: Are you congratulating to yeah?
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Are you like are you like a nominally a a Chiefs fan now?
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't get nervous during Chiefs games, but I got nervous during the Super Bowl.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: I was like, I want him to win so badly.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: This like when overtime happened, I was like, okay, this needs please let this happen for my guy.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: But I don't like I don't have an NFL team.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: Like I root for the Texas teams, you know.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: I I I enjoy the NFL greatly, but I don't really have a team.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, and so by way of Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City has become a team that I actually get nervous when they don't win or are in a tight game that really means a lot.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm walking around in Chiefs gear, but uh you know, always if people ask me, like, oh, what's your favorite team?
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: Like, I just go, uh, I guess the Cowboys is kind of my my response.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but um because just because Texas, but honestly, I think it's the Chiefs, dude.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: I guess and if if and if Patrick Mahomes is on a different team tomorrow, it's gonna be where Tini lands.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Like, that's just how it's gonna be.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: He won't.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: Kansas City for Yeah, I know they will for my let him go.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: But it's just crazy, like thinking about hey, what what's it like in 10 years?
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: Does he have five more Super Bowls?
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Does he have 10 more Super Bowls?
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Does he have one more Super Bowl?
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: Like, even if he only gets one more in 10 years, he's gonna be 38 and he will have had four Super Bowls.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's ridiculous.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: So he's already a Hall of Famer, like that's how crazy this is, you know.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's nuts.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: I I'm big Chiefs guy over here.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: I I I just I just saw a tweet, and I think it was from uh a very generic talking head.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Like, if if your school built a statue of any athlete or coach, I think the only answer is Patrick Mahomes.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Do it right now.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Would you we're not a statue school, we don't have a statue of anybody.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Well, no one except for uh Rogers at the front.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he didn't play football.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he didn't win three Super Bowls.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: Soap Suds didn't win three Super Bowls.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: Replace it.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: Soap Suds was a role player, if we're being honest.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: No, I I'm what I'm 100% for it.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: If they built a statue for him tomorrow, I'd be all for it.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, me too.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think eventually there's gonna be some sort of true dedication on campus to him.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, they already put his honestly, you look at his win-loss record in Texas Tech, he didn't deserve to have his name up in the stadium, but he totally deserves to have his name up in the stadium.
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: He's Patrick Mahomes, yes, uh, yeah, exactly.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: So whatever.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, anything else?
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Nah, dude.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: I just go Chiefs.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: Go Chiefs, keep freaking winning them.
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: Um, Texas Tech Baseball opens up their season tomorrow, which by the time you'll be listening listening to this is today against the number eight Tennessee Volunteers in the Shriners Classic at Globe Life.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Is it park or field?
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: What is it now?
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: It is uh yes Field.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: Field?
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: It's field.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Maybe the Dallas, the Dallas people are getting pissed.
- 37:51SPEAKER_03: Um the DFW people can't believe us right now.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: Um they open up against Tennessee, they play Nebraska the next day, they play Oregon the next day.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: Hell of a start to the year for the Texas Tech baseball team and Tim Tadler.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Hey, talk about scheduling some cup cupcakes to get warmed up on it.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: An SEC team, uh, a Big Ten team, which I don't think Nebraska's a slouch in baseball.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: Are they?
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean, but Big Ten is generally pretty ass at baseball.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: Like just flat out.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: I think the only one in Michigan.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: Um pitching rotation for the opening weekend for the Red Raiders.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: Kyle Robinson on Friday, Zayn Petty on Saturday, Jack Washburn to finish us off on Sunday.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: Um we'll see.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: Pitching has been kind of a meh spot for the Red Raiders uh the last couple years, but we'll see what these guys pull.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Look, I mean, Josh Young has set the mood, so he has he has blessed the mood and blessed the mood.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: I think I think it's time to ride that high.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: And dude, I don't I don't want to look too far ahead, but immediately after that, we're playing UTA um and then Oregon State.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: Like Tim Tadlock is has the laser eyes meme right now.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: He's just sending his boys to war.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: They are in the trenches, my dude.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: They are stuck in traffic in that concrete jungle of DFW with in the trenches.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: Oh let the boys play.
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: We're gonna hit well.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: We're gonna send Kyle out there first.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be good.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: You know, we'll see.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: Wreck them.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm so upset right now.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: I'm so angry.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: I can't hear you.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: I can't hear you.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: I can't hear you.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: Love you, Skipper.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: Love you, Tim.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: Tech baseball.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: It seems like baseball season just ended.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: And here we are.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: I know, I know, dude.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: It really, it really does, doesn't it?
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: But it baseball is obviously gonna be a bit in the backseat until basketball is really wrapping up since we're about to hit the big uh big time for it.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: But it's the perfect year uh academic gear cap off.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: So I'm looking forward to seeing how these boys get going.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Yep, we'll see.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: It'll be a good one.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Um, all right, man.
- 40:14SPEAKER_03: What else before we get to debate corner?
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: Dude, all right, just one last thing I saw on the interwebs today was that Georgia State's football coach, their head coach, got hired as a position coach at South Carolina.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: Position coach, a head coach of an FBS team is now a position coach in South Carolina.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: Well, do you see Chip Kelly left head coach at U at UCLA for the offensive coordinator position at Ohio State?
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: But doesn't isn't that one where it's like the the writings on the wall that he is his his his ass is on fire, so he's gonna just go go ahead and secure his next step.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: It's still weird though to leave it is weird it's to leave a head coaching position for a coordinator position at in the same conference.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: In the same conference, I know it's just weird, man.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: That is weird, like totally understanding, totally understand.
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's like an eater beaten sort of situation.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, you want to be with the programs that are going to survive, and it sucks, but it is what it is.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, UCLA is being thrown into the fire right now, so my to worry about ruters in Maryland now.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: So things things are getting hot over there in LA.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Butkers can't wait for the for the crosstown rivalry of butgers and UCLA.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: I I love how the Big Ten is like touted as this monster in the woods, and then you just have like freaking Nebraska and rutgers running at Northwestern, you know, rolling around, and then Indiana jumps out of the bush and and and Purdue sneaking around the corner.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: Like, get real.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Like, it's so frustrating that these conferences are killing play like areas like ours, hypothetically, you know.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Like, what the hell?
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Northwestern is just trying to stay as silent as possible in the corner.
- 42:09SPEAKER_03: Like, yes, we will continue to get our ass beat so we can get that money, baby.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: Throw it on top of their insane tuition.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: It's ridiculous.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: It's ridiculous.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: This sport is stupid.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: It's so stupid.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: Why do we care about this sport?
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: Ah, yeah.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: No, I mean, it's it's a shift.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, did you see uh ESPN college football 2025 EA Sports?
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Big time.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: Happy.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: I'm very happy.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: Looking forward to it.
- 42:41SPEAKER_03: I may, I may have to buy a PS5.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: You must.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: It must be done.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: It must be done.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, you have to do it.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Ask for forgiveness later.
- 42:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:51SPEAKER_03: Ask for forgiveness later.
- 42:53SPEAKER_03: My wife is leaving me because I bought a PS5.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: But I have a dynasty in fake Texas Tech.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: But Texas Tech is three-time national champions.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: Oh shit, my coordinators just got hired away.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, looking forward to it.
- 43:10SPEAKER_03: Alright, man.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: You ready to get to debate corner?
- 43:12SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 43:14SPEAKER_03: We have some classics for you guys today.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: Some quick hitters.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Some quick hitters.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: So, age-old question.
- 43:23SPEAKER_03: To start us off here.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: The simple hot dog.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: Is it a sandwich?
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: The glorious, the glorious American icon, the old wiener in a bun.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: Steven, you know my feelings on this.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: We've probably had this debate too many times.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: I I've kind of come to this epiphany today when I was thinking about it for two hours and not doing my job.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: Um, that I underst I completely understand where your stance is gonna come from.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say it's not a hot dog.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's not a it's not a hot dog.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: Hot dog is not a hot dog.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: It's not a hot dog.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: It's something else entirely.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: But it's it's in the sandwich family.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: There are families to this, but it's not a sandwich.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: It's not a sandwich.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: Um, it's it's not a sandwich in the sense that a burger is not really a sandwich either, and it's even further removed from that.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: It's in the sandwich family, but at the end of the day, we have boundaries and lines for a reason, and we have to keep these genres pure.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: You know, we have they have to maintain an identity.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: And for that, for that reason, the hot dog, for basically moral reasons, the hot dog is a hot dog and not a sandwich.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: When you think about what is a sandwich, what is what is a sandwich?
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: It's contents, ingredients, sauce, meat, whatever, between either two slices of bread or cut between one slice of bread to make a sandwich.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: My main argument for a hot dog being a sandwich is you look at a hoagie.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: A hoagie is a solid piece of bread that you cut not all the way, not into two, but just one solid piece of bread that is cut and contents are stuffed inside.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: And not a single person in this world would say that a hoagie is not a sandwich.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: But can you then say can you say a hoagie is a hot dog at this point?
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: Since we have gone this far?
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: Well, no, because a hot dog has to have some sort of sausage or wiener.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: So you're saying there is true identifications here then?
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: There are there's some it it sounds like you and I are agreeing with each other then, because it sounds like you're saying the hot dog is in the sandwich family, but it's not a sandwich, like it's a cousin of the sandwich.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: No, the a hot dog is a sandwich.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm saying.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: It's not a sandwich.
- 45:59SPEAKER_03: Hot dog is a sandwich.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: It's it's meat stuffed between two pieces of bread with some contents on top.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: It's a sandwich, it's absolutely a sandwich.
- 46:07SPEAKER_03: And I don't get I don't get the beef.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Look, you know I I I'm not a North American.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: I'm an American, damn it.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: You know, like I am not the super general thing, I am this very specific thing.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: But I just I am very lenient with what I call a sandwich.
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: I think a hamburger is a sandwich.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: It it it's in the sandwich family, but you know, literally, there is hamburger sandwich, you know.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: You you go to any general American place that has a buffalo chicken sandwich and a hamburger.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: What's the difference?
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: What is the difference?
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: The choice of meat is the difference.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, and that's a that's a fine, that's an okay line, then because that doesn't make a hot dog are in that same category because they're saying we are different than a normal sandwich, which they are because a hamburger has beef, it's between two pieces of bread.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: You know what else is beef between two pieces of bread?
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: A Philly cheesesteak.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: A Philly cheesesteak is can is considered a sandwich.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: Well, you don't say sandwich, you say philly cheesesteak.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: It's still a sandwich, it's in it's in the sandwich category of menu.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: But you don't say sandwich, you know, it's in the sandwich family, but we're not gonna call it a sandwich, you know.
- 47:24SPEAKER_03: But it's under if you look at any menu that's got, you know, I'm talking like a walk-ons or something, where they have a grilled chicken sandwich, they have a Philly cheesesteak, they have uh whatever.
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: Well, it's not sandwiches.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: To you, I feel like this is going very one way, and I feel like this reinforces my family argument.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: Because are you gonna call a chicken sandwich a chicken burger?
- 47:46SPEAKER_03: Sometimes they are no if they're put into a patty, yeah.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: If a chicken, if if cut up chicken, you've had chicken burgers, they served them in school.
- 47:54SPEAKER_03: They're chi it's put into a patty chicken.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: It's a chicken sandwich, exactly.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: They're all the same.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: A chicken, a chicken burger or a chicken sandwich, it's all a sandwich.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: But okay, but again, this is only going one way.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna call it, you're not, you're you're not gonna go out of your way and go to Chick-fil-A and say, I'm gonna have that chicken burger.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: It's not a burger, it's not a burger, it's a chicken sandwich.
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: It's not, but they're all sandwiches.
- 48:19SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: They're all that that family, no, but they're they're just all identities.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: The word sandwich is what I'm taking here.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: They all they all sandwich, they all evolved from a common ancestor.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: That is the that is the PB and J.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: What came first?
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: The peanut butter or the jelly, okay.
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, no, a hot dog's a sandwich, much like the burger is a sandwich, much like the chicken sandwich is a sandwich, much like the filale fish is a sandwich.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's all sandwiches.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: I stand by that it's a family and sandwich is the household name, okay?
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: But they each have their own identities, they each went on to went on to have their own careers.
- 49:01SPEAKER_01: They didn't just get daddy's money, they didn't just work, they didn't just become a lawyer like dad.
- 49:05SPEAKER_01: Some of them went on to become doctors and rodeo clowns, you know.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: They all went and did their different thing.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but you know what?
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: That doctor or that hobo that is a part of that family is still a part of that family, and that family is a sandwich.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: So that is my argument.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: That's my closing statement.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: A hot dog is a sandwich.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm just gonna say that they're related.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, the hot dog's the cousin that comes over for Thanksgiving and gets into political arguments about what what the ultimate.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: And guess what?
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: Some people may not like that guy.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: I don't think a lot of people do like that guy, but he's still a part of the family.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: All right, he's still there, he's still invited next year, even though you get a big groan when you say Uncle Jimmy's coming.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: I think I think we're just on a spectrum of agreement here where you are just you are so broad.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm a little more purist about it.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: I think that's just where it ultimately lands.
- 49:56SPEAKER_03: Wherever you land, just know that it's a sandwich.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: It's not a hot dog, it's a hot dog.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: It's because like a sausage wrap is not a sandwich either.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: Like, I think it is I do not tacos are not sandwiches because it's the same argument at the end of the day.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: It's not.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: That's they're not.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: We could we could get into it a little more.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: What what is what do you ask for it?
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: Now I would ask you, is a tortilla considered bread?
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Not really.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Like it's I understand what you're saying.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: It's like a bread product, it's like a bread product, but it's not bread.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: It's not because especially like a corn tortilla, what bread is made out of corn?
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: What if it's a flour tortilla?
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: I understand that.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: I can understand that uh that that um uh that that comparison there, but how much bread is just made out of flour?
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: That's I can throw that right back at you.
- 50:55SPEAKER_03: That's the main thing, that's the main component of bread.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: It's flour and it's water and it's yeast.
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: That's what it is.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: I guess flour is just ground-up wheat, right?
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: That's one of the most dumbest things I've ever said.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: But hey, I was in my mind, I was thinking like communion wafer when it's just flat when it's just flour.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: But um no, it's it's a taco is not a sandwich.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: Look, it's I I wanna I wanna realize they're sort of related, but they're not I have I have values, I have standards in how I approach things, but when it comes to what is a sandwich, I'm very lenient.
- 51:30SPEAKER_03: I'm very like very liberal.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: Call it, yeah, call it call it a sandwich.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: I don't care.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 51:35SPEAKER_03: Alex Jones would be all over your ass because I'm about the description, and I'm like, okay, sandwich contents between either one a cut-up piece of bread or two pieces of bread.
- 51:48SPEAKER_03: That is a taco.
- 51:49SPEAKER_03: That is a hot dog.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: That is a burger, that is a chicken sandwich.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: That is gonna call your burger a taco.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: My burger a taco.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: You are gonna call your burger a taco.
- 51:59SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna call my burger a taco.
- 52:01SPEAKER_03: I'm cool with subcategories, but it's all one category, which is a sandwich.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: But these subcategories get so far from the mothership that is the sandwich.
- 52:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, true.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: They're so far.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: No, there's one, there's one thing that defines a sandwich, which is contents between two or one pieces of bread.
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: And and and all the and all the the other all the other uh burgers and hot dogs in ham and cheese sandwich are asking why their cousins don't speak English, the talk of well, you know.
- 52:27SPEAKER_03: Hey, we're all people, aren't we?
- 52:29SPEAKER_03: You know, whether you speak English, so far Chinese or Portuguese, we're all English, man.
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: Or like double, we're all English.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: We're getting crazy here.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: Like, this is getting stupid.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: Like, you're you're getting way too liberal with this.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: Like, it's fine.
- 52:45SPEAKER_03: I think like I'm I'm okay with people disagreeing with me on this.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: I just have a pretty firm belief that they're all sandwiches, and that's and you know, disagree with it.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: I don't think a salad is a sandwich because there's no bread.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: Well, well, that was croutons in the sand.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: Are now the lettuce sandwiches?
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: Are they like because they're they're between pieces of cut-up bread?
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: That's not okay.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: If they're together, then it's a sandwich.
- 53:09SPEAKER_03: No, see, that's where I that's my line.
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: Ah, I see.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: The salad is the line.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Salad's like what the 12th cousin of the sandwich at this point.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: I don't think fettuccine alfredo is a sandwich.
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: It's bread, isn't it?
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: What about when the noodles are flopped off on top of each other?
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: Does it become a sandwich?
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: The noodles aren't bread.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: How crazy you're getting.
- 53:29SPEAKER_01: No, I'm not.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm literally drawing a line for you.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: So the line isn't tacos, it's pasta.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Another bread product.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: If you put something stuffed inside bread or two pieces of bread stacked on top of each other with contents in between, it's a sandwich.
- 53:44SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: Uh this madness.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: Madness.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: You you you live in a lawless land.
- 53:51SPEAKER_03: You guys decide and let us know why I'm wrong or why Tristan is wrong here.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: Um, the second part of this is cereal a soup.
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: What are your thoughts?
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: I I'm gonna remain on the the the family thing.
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: Cereal is not a soup, okay?
- 54:06SPEAKER_01: Because the main the main thing I'm gonna go with this is cereal doesn't have a broth.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: You're not preparing a broth.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I feel like as a soup, at minimum, you must prepare a broth.
- 54:16SPEAKER_01: And milk is not a broth.
- 54:18SPEAKER_01: It's a single ingredient.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: Like that's not what broth is.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: You have to prepare a broth.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Because the soup, because at the end of the day, the the star of the show in a soup, even with all the goodies in it, is the broth.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: Like it's the broth that sets everything apart from a different soup, like from one soup to another.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: Okay, so let me ask you this chicken noodle.
- 54:37SPEAKER_03: Soup.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: Chicken noodle soup.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: Correct?
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: What's the broth in a chicken noodle soup?
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's gonna be what the chicken uh it's chicken broth.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, chicken broth and salt, pepper, yeah.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: Vegetable sucks.
- 54:54SPEAKER_03: But you're saying you're saying as soon as something else is put into that chicken broth, that then makes it a soup.
- 55:00SPEAKER_03: So like if somebody if somebody just put like heated up chicken broth, put some noodles in there and put some bits of chicken, you're not saying that's a soup.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: But here, here, is chicken broth itself a single ingredient?
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: Because you're buying you're basically buying soup in a carton when you think about it.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: Okay, because it's while milk is purely milk, it's milk.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: It's one thing.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: While broth, you're buying basically soup and a carton at the end of the day.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: Some what so what happens if you put sugar in your cereal?
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, what happens if you put sugar in your milk and then you put your frosted flakes?
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: Which you're probably a diabetic, I get it, but like it what happens then?
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: Does it then become a soup?
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Honey on your Cheerios and it's milk again, the milk makes it really good.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: No, because at that point, it's just kind of like a sweet breakfast.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: It's just you, you, you again, it's you're not preparing a hot broth.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: You're not making a broth.
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: You're not preparing a broth.
- 55:51SPEAKER_01: Well, not all soup is hot.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: You got gazpacho and stuff, right?
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: But um, but you're still preparing a broth.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: You're not preparing, you're not really preparing a broth whenever you're just adding sugar into milk.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: It's still milk, it's just sweetened milk.
- 56:05SPEAKER_01: I'm it's not a prepared broth.
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: You need a prepared broth.
- 56:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, chicken broth is just chicken juice mixed with salt and water.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, okay.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure if we look at any looked at an ingredients box, it would be of several different things.
- 56:22SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying, milk already has sugar in it.
- 56:24SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying, I I can't, I can't say the the hot dog argument without saying cereal's a soup.
- 56:30SPEAKER_03: I just can't, you know.
- 56:31SPEAKER_03: I think it's a breakfast soup.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: I think it's great.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: Everybody likes a breakfast soup.
- 56:35SPEAKER_03: And it it's if you feel weird calling it that, that's fine, I guess.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: Call it just what it is, which is cereal.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: But what is soup?
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: Soup is a brothy or liquidy sort of a bowl of liquid mixed with a bunch of solid pieces of food, right?
- 56:54SPEAKER_03: Can we agree that's a soup?
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, yeah, I I absolutely do.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: A soup is a broth with yeah, solid chunks of food in it.
- 57:02SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: So to me, I think cereal's soup.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, you eat it the same way with the spoon.
- 57:09SPEAKER_03: You uh it's it's a soup.
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: It's breakfast soup.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but another thing to consider with soups, usually the ingredients are cooked with the soup, like cooked with the broth.
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: With cereal, you're not cooking anything, you're just mixing two things.
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: Sometimes it's cooked with it.
- 57:24SPEAKER_03: Sometimes it's not good.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: I think I I I think what separates it to me is the complete lack of preparation, you know, where it's it in it the simplicity of the ingredients versus the complexity of the ingredients.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: Like it just it's evolves from because all cereal is is called oatmeal.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: That's what it was designed to be, and that's what it is.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: And oatmeal is not a soup.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: If anything, oatmeal oatmeal is like a stew at the end of the day.
- 57:48SPEAKER_03: So this is so this is where I think we could differentiate it here.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: Uh cereal is in the middle, soup is on the left side, and on the right side, you get like a a topping, you know, like a dessert where you pour something over it, you know.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: If you pour something over it, that doesn't make it a soup, right?
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: You know, so but also I think the cereal is more towards the soup than it is the topping, either.
- 58:19SPEAKER_03: I like I'm thinking dessert here.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: Like I'm thinking like a bread pudding or something, or you put like a caramel or you put like a melted chocolate or something over it.
- 58:27SPEAKER_03: But I would feel like the cereal is more catered towards the soup category than it is a topping category, which is what you're saying.
- 58:36SPEAKER_03: The milk is in this instant, it's a topping.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh it's it uh the way the way also I can I kind of look at it is generally cereals are sweet, generally.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: So that pushes it towards a dessert sort of zone, which a lot of breakfast foods are.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: While soups, are there any sweet soups like that are common?
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: I'm not talking about some weird thing you made in your kitchen.
- 58:57SPEAKER_01: Are there any common sweet soups that are truly soups out there?
- 59:02SPEAKER_03: Uh um, I mean uh sweet and spicy.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: Like I feel like a gazpacho isn't like a uh salty or savory, you know.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: But that's that's naturally sweet from like the tomatoes and such.
- 59:14SPEAKER_01: I believe that's tomato-based soup, right?
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: But then you could say tomato basil is sweet.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: It's not, it it's it's it's got that sweet acid from the tomato, but it's not designed to be sugary sweet like a dessert normally is.
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: Like you don't put tomatoes in desserts, it's just not a bad okay.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, this one I'm a little more lenient on.
- 59:33SPEAKER_03: I do still think the the product that you get from searing, which is your mini wheats with a bunch of milk surrounding it, and you're eating it with a spoon.
- 59:43SPEAKER_03: I feel like it's very similar to a soup.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: And it's just if you call it breakfast soup, I don't have a problem with it.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: I I I I call it break breakfast soup for fun.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: Like I you're having some breakfast soup, you know.
- 59:53SPEAKER_03: But it's honestly it it meets the criteria to me.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: I I I get I I I think if I'm being funny about it, I'm gonna call it a soup.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: But if I'm like being a purist about it, it's not a soup.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: Because like a stew isn't really a soup either, you know.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: You get to a point where it's not soup anymore.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: And I think cereal is just too Frankenstein to be truly considered a soup.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_03: I have a hard time differentiating stew and soup.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: Like, I feel like like obviously jambalaya is not a soup.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_03: I feel like it's a stew, maybe, or is it more of just a dish?
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: No, because I I get whenever I think of stew, I think of like chili, you know, like chili is really a stew, you know.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_03: See, I'm okay with calling chili a soup.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: It's not a soup, though, dude.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: It's a stew, but it I mean, again, it's like where you can make chili, but like you eat chili with a spoon, you eat soup with a spoon.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: So what?
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: You eat ice cream with a spoon, it's not soup.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_01: You can't fair you eat cake with a spoon, it's not soup.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_01: You don't eat cake with a spoon.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_03: Why not?
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_03: You can you eat cake with a fork.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: You can eat it's really one of those foods where it can go either way.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, yeah, we're just getting nitpicky at this point, but that's what debate corner is all about.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: It's just getting nitpicky about bullshit.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_01: Um the reason why I differentiate them is it's all about the broth levels, you know, and a stew is incredibly low on broth, if any, and a chowder is losing its broth, but it's closer to a soup than a stew is.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_01: Chowder is absolutely a soup, yeah.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_01: So, but it's very chunky.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: That's what makes it a chowder, you know.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: It's a little more thick, the broth's a little more thick, it's a little more porridgey.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: What is porridge?
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: Is porridge a soup?
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: I think porridge and chowder are like the same thing.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_03: I think that's why they invented the stew word because they're like, I don't know what to call this.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it chili's not a soup.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: So the there again, it's it's like it's it's identical to my hot dog argument argument, but you just get so far from the base family member where it's just this isn't the same thing anymore.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but see, I would still even say that cereal is more of a soup than chili is a soup.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_01: I guess I just I guess just like physically, right?
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: Kind of like how a bat and a bird are completely different animals, but at the end of the day, how different are they whenever you're talking about them, you know?
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's kind of how I feel about it.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm more willing to meet you in the middle on the soup thing than I am the hot dog thing.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: The hot dog thing, I'm standing firm.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_03: It is a sandwich, the soup thing, the cereal.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_03: I I I will probably call it soup for the rest of my life, but you know.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, hey, I I I just this this spurred it because my coworker was eating uh cereal out of a like a soup bowl this morning.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: I was just so I just cracked up and it made me think of debate order.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_03: Well, there you go.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_03: Fantastic.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_03: I'm glad that this debate quarter did not end with you and me meeting in the middle.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_03: Debate quarter should not end that way.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: It should never be a mutual thing.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_03: It's for the people to decide, it's for the people to then listen to this podcast and then and then take it to one of their dipshit friends and say, What do you think?
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_03: Hot dog sandwich, and then you get in a heated argument, and then you get upset with each other.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: That's and then once it cools off, you bring up the soup.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, I love debate quarter, it's a great, fantastic addition to this podcast.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_03: Um, all right, man.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_03: This has gone on pretty long at this point.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: Let's let's finish it off with the song of the week here.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_01: All right, man.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, do you want to do the eulogy?
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_03: Yes, I will.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: Um, we lost a legend.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: Um, it's been a while since we've recorded a podcast, but uh since the last recording, we lost a legend.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_03: Toby Keith passed away, uh, 62 years old.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_03: He is he dealt with uh a disease that I think a lot of us are all too familiar with, which is the the C-word, which is cancer.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_03: Um, unfortunately, I you know I've dealt with it a lot within my family.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, a lot of people have dealt with it.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_03: It is a horrible, horrible disease that has taken too many lives.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_03: And uh, it just sucks to lose a legend like Toby Keith because uh you look back at him, I mean, he's just got so many hits.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_03: This guy was an absolute legend of country music.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_03: Um, so many uh, you know, you're drinking in a bar and then the Toby Keith song comes up and you're with your boys, and it's just such a good time.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: So uh this song of the week is going to be dedicated to the great Toby Keith.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_03: Um, gone too soon, rest in peace.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, man.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, just a dominator on the radio growing up, a Patriots, a blue-collar representative, and just a dude's dude at the end of the day.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: You know, nothing pretentious about him.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Um, so dude, I'm gonna go ahead and kick it off.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna, I'm this is one of the few times where I'm gonna be a really basic dude, but I mean, my most listened to song, my most jamming out song, probably my favorite song to listen to whenever I'm just you know drinking a beer by Toby Keith.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_01: It's it should have been a cowboy.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_01: Because when it's so relatable, you know, even if it's just having fun, you're just like, shoot, man, screw this, you know, in the office stuffy printer and paper.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: I could be out there roping cattle and riding around with my boys, you know.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: Like that's really what the song is at the end of the day.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_01: And it's it should have been a cowboy.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_07: I should have been a cowboy, should have learned a rope around.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_07: We're in my sex, should ride my pony on a cattle drive.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_01: His Amarilla by morning.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_03: Very nice, very nice choice.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, you can't get a bad choice here.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_03: Like, no matter what you said, I was gonna say nice choice uh because he has so many anthems.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_03: Um, my song of the week, I thought about this for a little bit, uh, probably too long, um, on what I thought I should choose for my Toby Keith song of the week.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_03: Um, and ultimately it just came back to it.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_03: What is Toby Keith known for?
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_03: He's known for being patriotic, he's known for gassing up the troops, and the most gassing up the troops song that there is is American Soldier by Toby Keith.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_03: Um it's it's such a it's a sad one, but it really hits you in the feels.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_03: And anybody that has had uh any sort of military within their family knows the sacrifice that those men and women take um for the country that we love, the United States.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_03: So um, American Soldier Toby Keith is my song of the week.
- 1:06:24unknown: Freedom don't come free.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_07: I'm an American soldier, an American.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_07: Beside my brothers and my sisters, I will prioritize the day.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about, baby.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_01: I dare someone to say something even slightly anti-American with a song like that on.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_01: Any Toby Keith in general.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_01: But thank you so much, man.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_01: What's so great about him is his legacy gets to live on forever now.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_01: Hell yeah.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go jump some right now.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_03: Very nice.
