- 2:08All right, what's up everyone, Welcome in to Inside the Hoosier
- 2:12Mind, brought to you by Military Broadcast radio, helping give
- 2:15veterans a voice. It is great to be here on a
- 2:20Tuesday evening. Not only that, but we also have
- 2:25a very short time until we get to the most important one and
- 2:32that is the kick off for college football.
- 2:36And Nan, are we excited? We're only about 11 days away
- 2:40from the first kickoff on the 29th.
- 2:42It's against TCU and North Carolina as well as you have
- 2:47Virginia and NC State. I'll probably go over those more
- 2:51next week, but nonetheless, we have football coming back very,
- 2:56very soon. MJ in the world of conscious
- 3:00positive thinking is joining us. MJ Appreciate you joining me,
- 3:03ma'am. I know you're excited.
- 3:04I'm excited to see how your Penn State Nittany Lions do this year
- 3:07'cause you guys really, you know, drew the luck of the
- 3:10schedule draw as far as, you know, kind of the easiest Big 10
- 3:13schedule, probably the easiest schedule in the country for a
- 3:17Power Four team in a major conference like the Big 10.
- 3:19So you guys, all eyes are going to be on you as far as Matt
- 3:22Campbell, Rocco Beck, all of that.
- 3:25And of course, with it only being 11 days until the kickoff
- 3:29of college football, we of course have to end the offseason
- 3:35with with some college football drama.
- 3:41And one of the ones that has been sweeping the news more so
- 3:44last week than it is this week, It's kind of died down a little
- 3:47bit, but people are are still talking about it because again,
- 3:50it's the down period. College football hasn't kicked
- 3:53off yet. There's not much to talk about.
- 3:55We just have to stretch out these next 11 days and then
- 3:59we're golden. But there was a pretty big
- 4:02ripple as far as the sports world goes because of the whole
- 4:07Jaden Daniels and LSU situation with LSU issuing out number five
- 4:13to He was and still is a All American freshman quarterback
- 4:22now going into a sophomore year. DJ Pickett, they issued that
- 4:27number to DJ because that was the number he was promised in
- 4:30order to commit to LSU as well as you know, he he's a five star
- 4:37prospect. He's one of the best in the
- 4:39country. He's 6 foot four.
- 4:41He actually played last year as a freshman, did pretty decently
- 4:46well. Obviously he played in kind of
- 4:48rotation with Mansour Delaine on the other side.
- 4:51So DJ Pickett was kind of the number two, number three guy and
- 4:55just because nobody really knew what to expect from him, he was
- 4:58hard to have to manage to deal with.
- 4:59I know he did end up getting an interception in that Florida
- 5:02game against DJ Lackway, but he threw 5 interceptions in that
- 5:05game, so that's really not much of a surprise.
- 5:09But as far as Jayden Daniels and the whole number five thing goes
- 5:12with him being upset at LSU for putting the number back in
- 5:16rotation. So let's look at the facts that
- 5:20we do know so far. There's a lot of speculation
- 5:24that it's his mom and his team that are the ones saying this.
- 5:28As far as we know, Jayden Daniels has not come out
- 5:31directly and said whether or not he hasn't come out directly and
- 5:36shamed this, but nor has he condoned it either.
- 5:39And there's a lot of thought that somebody on his team, we
- 5:43don't know who. Again, we'd more than likely
- 5:45think that it's his mom because his mom's his own agent, that
- 5:49she looks at it as a sign of disrespect to Jayden.
- 5:53And the other fact that we have to look at is more than likely
- 5:57Brian Kelly promised him this of, hey, as long as I'm the head
- 6:00coach here, nobody else will wear #5 you know, you want
- 6:03Heisman in it. And albeit LSU has only ever had
- 6:08three Heisman's in its history tenure of a football program,
- 6:13the other two, that has very much been the case so far.
- 6:16Nobody else has wore Billy Cannon's number 20, who's the
- 6:18only number officially retired by LSU and ever since Joe Burrow
- 6:23won it one not only the National Championship, but the Heisman,
- 6:27same as Billy Cannon, nobody has born #9 ever since.
- 6:31And as of right now, as of August 18th, 2026, more than
- 6:36likely isn't going to ever wear it again.
- 6:40Now that might change depending on what 5 star prospect comes
- 6:43out of there. What, you know, oh, highly
- 6:45talented recruit, either comes out of high school, whether they
- 6:47come out of the transfer portal, whether they reach out to Joe
- 6:51Burrow and ask him his permission on whether or not
- 6:53they can wear #9 you, you never know.
- 6:56And, you know, Speaking of Joe Burrow, he even brought that up
- 7:01in an interview because he was asked, you know, how do you, how
- 7:04do you feel in the situation? He had just heard about it.
- 7:06He wasn't going to make a comment.
- 7:07And for him to, you know, I'm sure he's somewhat in the know,
- 7:12but it's also one of those it's like, yeah, it's it's not really
- 7:15my my place to speak because for him, you know, he doesn't know
- 7:18what Jayden's going through. You know, he he doesn't know all
- 7:20the inklings behind the scenes. You know, it's not like LSU
- 7:23still has him on speed dial, like, hey, this is what we're
- 7:25going to do. And he gives the the yes or no
- 7:27nod. But with Brian Kelly probably
- 7:31having promised Jayden that now Brian Kelly's been long since
- 7:34fired and Lane Kiffin comes in, it's hard for you to say no to a
- 7:39five star prospect that you recruited there to LSU more than
- 7:43likely probably got, you know, reached out or contacted through
- 7:47the transfer portal, you know, hey, leave LSU, you know, come
- 7:50to here, come there and what? And we'll let you wear whatever
- 7:54number you want to wear. If you want to wear 5, we'll let
- 7:57you wear 5. We'll we'll figure out a way.
- 7:59And that's the thing that to me when I was when I listened to
- 8:05all the different perspectives on this, because I really didn't
- 8:07hear a lot of people more in favor of Daniels.
- 8:12It's a lot of people when I watch their reactions, when I
- 8:16listen to what they said on AII, kind of felt in the same way of
- 8:21you're not bigger than the university itself, you're not
- 8:24bigger than LSU. Now I'm saying that little bit
- 8:27of bias, being an LSU fan, attending LSU, all of that.
- 8:31I don't speak on behalf of LSU, but as an LSU fan and as
- 8:34somebody who's grown up watching LSU for a long time, LSU was
- 8:38here before you, LSU will be here after you.
- 8:45And that's one of the things that Jayden really has to.
- 8:49And again, I don't, I hate that I'm putting this more on Jayden
- 8:53because I believe it's more on Jayden's team.
- 8:55Jayden's team needs to realize that more than anything of I
- 9:01look at it, this was something that really hit me hard when I
- 9:04was in the service. And, and it was funny because as
- 9:07I realized this and what I would tell other people who they had
- 9:13been in the service for a long time.
- 9:16And, and I, you know, full transparency, not to get off
- 9:19onto a full wheel Ted talk rabbit hole as far as my, my
- 9:23time in the military goes. It, it really hurt a lot of
- 9:27people's feelings when I would tell people who, you know, they
- 9:30absolutely love the military. They love being in it.
- 9:32They had, you know, devoted, you know, X amount of years to the
- 9:35military either same as me, if not more.
- 9:37And it was one of those, you know, they're like, oh, no, no,
- 9:41they're, they're, they're going to absolutely fall apart when I
- 9:43leave. Like, Nope, no, they ain't, they
- 9:46do not care about you, dude. And it's funny because they're
- 9:49well, no, no, they care about me.
- 9:51Nope. Whatever number you have on your
- 9:55on your common access card, your military ID, whatever number you
- 9:59have on that, that's the number they associate you with.
- 10:01There's a number before you, there's a number after you and
- 10:04there's multiple numbers before and there's multiple numbers
- 10:07after you are one of them number.
- 10:11And that was a hard thing for and many of them still denied
- 10:14it. Many of them still just could
- 10:16not come to terms with the fact of the military, any branch that
- 10:20they served in, no matter what branch, no matter what base, no
- 10:22matter what MOSAFSC rate, whatever you want to call it, no
- 10:27matter, no matter the position, no matter who you were, no
- 10:30matter what you did, you were replaceable.
- 10:35And the institution, the Department of Defense,
- 10:38Department of War, it was originally the Department of
- 10:41War, then the Department of Defense, now it's the Department
- 10:43of War and the Department of Defense.
- 10:45Not going down that rabbit hole either but none the less it was
- 10:49here before you and when you retire when your time is done
- 10:53it's going to be there after you.
- 10:55And to me that's what Jayden Daniels team needs to realize
- 10:58with LSULSU was a championship winning program before Jayden
- 11:03got there. They were a great program before
- 11:05Jayden got there. Now they had a bad year prior to
- 11:10Jayden Daniels getting there. So that is 100% true.
- 11:13He did elevate them to being better, but they still had a bad
- 11:18time. And since Jayden Daniels left,
- 11:22they're still there. They even still had a good
- 11:24season post Jayden Daniels with Garrett Nussmeyer.
- 11:28Now, obviously last year, seven and six, not as good of a year,
- 11:32but they're still there and LSU still exists with or without
- 11:35Jayden Daniels. Here's the other thing that I
- 11:39that I feel when I was listening to some of the arguments on
- 11:43whether or not his number should be quote UN quote, retired, not
- 11:47all programs retired numbers. Now LSU, you know, again, they
- 11:51have kind of more of the long standing tradition of, you know,
- 11:55nobody has wore Billy Cannon's number ever since he won the
- 11:58Heisman and ever since he won the national championship all
- 12:01the way back in 1958. That was a long, long time ago.
- 12:05And as a way different time. There was also a rule that came
- 12:08out in 2007 from the NC double AI don't remember the rule in
- 12:12its entirety, but there is a standing rule I believe that the
- 12:17player has to basically have left for at least five years or
- 12:21maybe this is LS us own standing rule has to have left for at
- 12:25least five years before they can even consider retiring the
- 12:29number. Now obviously they could have
- 12:31retired Joe Burrow's number if they wanted to.
- 12:33They haven't yet. Why I don't particularly know,
- 12:38but you know, obviously Jayden has.
- 12:40It hasn't been that long since Jayden left and obviously not
- 12:44long enough for them to merit doing that for him because he
- 12:47did win a Heisman. It is one of those that's OK.
- 12:50It's a bit of a slight because yeah, you, you gave #5 out.
- 12:56But here's the other way that I that I look at this and it was
- 12:59actually brought up by Levar Arrington.
- 13:02And I feel like he brought up probably one of the the best
- 13:08kind of in the middle arguments if I had to really put it in
- 13:12that way. He brought up the point that
- 13:16when Lavar Arrington was at Penn State and he got to wear #11
- 13:21which is the one that he wanted, he got to wear #11 he made #11
- 13:25what? It was on defense.
- 13:26Now, obviously, each person is different when it comes to
- 13:29whether or not they want guys after them to wear their number
- 13:32or not. A lot of times the university
- 13:35may call and ask for permission, you know, such as Penn State
- 13:38with Lavar Arrington, like, hey, this kid wants to wear #11 like,
- 13:41is that cool? And he kind of gets the blessing
- 13:44of yes or no. We even see that in professional
- 13:46organizations too. You know, look at Peyton Manning
- 13:48with Denver and wearing #18 you know, he, he got permission from
- 13:53the family to do that. Same with Malik Neighbors and
- 13:54the Giants on being able to wear number one.
- 13:57And again, organizations all across the league do it
- 14:01completely differently. And even the same in college
- 14:03football. Every, every team, every college
- 14:06does it differently as far as how they, how they handle it.
- 14:09And Lavar brought up a good point.
- 14:12He said for him #11 on defense, that means you're the guy.
- 14:21You know, if you look at some of the other famous guys that wore
- 14:22#11 post Lavar Arrington, you know, he, he actually called
- 14:26Penn State and asked them to have Navarro Bowman wear #11
- 14:30after he left. Same with Michael Parsons.
- 14:33You know, Michael Parsons got to wear #11 because Lavar Arrington
- 14:36signed off on it, same with Abdul Carter.
- 14:38There's a couple other guys I believe in between there that
- 14:41even got to wear #11 because he signed off on it.
- 14:45But he brought up a good point. He goes, but that's just on
- 14:48defense. He goes no offense.
- 14:49He goes, see, guys on offense were #11 all the time don't
- 14:52bother me. And, and to me, that makes, that
- 14:57makes it even more of a compelling argument because I, I
- 15:02get maybe wanting a number retired as a whole, but if
- 15:05anything, if they gave #5 to another offensive guy, OK, now
- 15:09you can feel a little bit slide. It's on a defensive guy #5 on
- 15:13the defense doesn't have the same offense, doesn't have the
- 15:15same impact as #5 on the offense does.
- 15:18And that's how Lavar Arrington put it with #11 at Penn State
- 15:21#11 doesn't have the same impact on offense as it does on defense
- 15:25for Penn State. If you're wearing #11 on Penn
- 15:27State, especially in today's, you know, today's time and age,
- 15:31that means you're a guy. That means you have been signed
- 15:33off by a dude who also wore #11 at Penn State.
- 15:36It was an all time great in college football.
- 15:39It was an all time great for Penn State.
- 15:42I'm sure MJ, you, you probably remember watching Levar and I
- 15:46know he's a Nittany Lions. He might be a little bit of a
- 15:48fan of him, but I feel like he probably brought it.
- 15:51He he made the point the best of it's a defensive guy wearing it.
- 15:57Don't really sweat it as much. And then there is another
- 16:01perspective that to me, I felt also kind of brings a lot of
- 16:06relevancy to it. And believe it or not it Michael
- 16:10Irving talked about this several years ago.
- 16:13He said he didn't want his number retired.
- 16:15And he brought up the point of when you have a number retired,
- 16:18he just think about it. Think about any number for any,
- 16:22any potential sports team, right?
- 16:23You can look at the Bears, for example of #54 for Brian
- 16:27Urlacher, like he made number 54, completely relevant.
- 16:31He's big time player, won best in franchise history for the
- 16:34Bears and nobody had worn 54 until one of the new offensive
- 16:39lineman, he gave him his blessing, worn 54.
- 16:41Now, do we know if he's going to be good or not?
- 16:42I don't know. But it brings relevancy back to
- 16:46the number. He said if you retire a number
- 16:48and it goes up in the rafters, he goes unless somebody looks
- 16:50up, unless somebody makes mention of it either on
- 16:52broadcast, on television, he goes because unless you go to
- 16:54the stadium, you're going to see it.
- 16:56There we go. They may show them for like a
- 16:58couple seconds, like, oh, hey, look at all the retired jerseys,
- 17:01like here, look at all the retired numbers and you even may
- 17:03see it in the background. It's not going to be a highlight
- 17:05though. And Michael Urban brought up a
- 17:08really good point with that. He said, look at even his time
- 17:11in Dallas. He said they didn't retire
- 17:13number 88 and he wasn't even the original big number 88 in
- 17:17Dallas. You had Drew Pearson before that
- 17:19who wore number 88, Man, I think, I think maybe people worn
- 17:23it in between there. I don't really remember or no
- 17:27off the top of my head. But then Michael Irving comes
- 17:29in, he wears it, makes 88 a completely big name, and then
- 17:33you associate 88 with Michael Irving and Drew Pearson.
- 17:37Now, I believe there was another.
- 17:39I believe Zantonio Bryant was the name after Michael Irving to
- 17:42wear that he was supposed to be the next big star.
- 17:44Didn't really happen. And then 88 just wasn't worn for
- 17:47a while until Dez Bryant came into the picture.
- 17:50And now when again, whenever you think of 88, you think Dez
- 17:53Bryant, you think Michael Irving, you think Drew Pearson.
- 17:56After Dez Bryant leaves, nobody wears it.
- 17:58Then they draft CD Lamb. CD Lamb wears 88.
- 18:01So now again, when you think of 88, you think the Cowboys.
- 18:05Michael Irving is a name that's associated with it because
- 18:09because they don't retire it, because they put such an
- 18:12emphasis and a highlight on a number like that.
- 18:15They bring up all the other previous star players that have
- 18:18gotten to where that number. Now that's a bit of a different
- 18:21tradition as far as hey, we typically give this to guys who
- 18:24we think or we, you know, quote UN quote know are going to be
- 18:28great in the league. We want you to be associated
- 18:30with that number along with these other legends.
- 18:33And I feel like that's completely, completely logical
- 18:38argument. And for for Jayden Daniels, I
- 18:40mean, it's only been a couple years since you left.
- 18:42So it's not like people are going to forget you that
- 18:44quickly, especially in the modern sports day world.
- 18:47Like if they've watched any kind of sports and they follow any
- 18:50kind of college football, you're not completely forgotten to
- 18:53history. But, you know, 10 to 15 years
- 18:57down the road when your career is potentially done, that that
- 19:01may end up being an argument of, hey, you know, like when if you
- 19:05see somebody out there wearing #5 like, Oh yeah, another, you
- 19:08know, you know who the last great quarterback to wear #5 for
- 19:10LSU was? Jane Daniels, He won Heisman.
- 19:13Like that, that brings relevancy that keeps your name going even
- 19:17though, yes, you did something spectacular with the number.
- 19:21You did something great to me. I feel like if you retire a
- 19:25number, if you do something like that, you, you kind of get lost
- 19:29to history. But again, that that's just me
- 19:31personally. It's one of those, when I when I
- 19:34heard about this and I saw it, I was like, I feel like this is
- 19:39this is just we're bored. It's we're in the last home
- 19:43stretch of trying to get to college football and it kind of
- 19:48reminds me of like whatever, whenever you were in school.
- 19:52And it's like, man, we're like this close to summer break and
- 19:54it's like those last few days just drag on the absolute worst.
- 20:01It's like it takes forever for anything to happen.
- 20:03It takes forever for any type of movement to go through.
- 20:07And I honestly kind of feel like that's really the case with the
- 20:11with this. MJ brought up the point she said
- 20:14honestly today I believe more balance with numbers needs to be
- 20:17re evaluated. Only so many players and numbers
- 20:19through the years. I'm glad I brought this topic
- 20:21up. I appreciate that MJ and and
- 20:23that does bring up another good point.
- 20:24You know, even even though it's not football related, look at
- 20:27the Yankees. I think they have like 20
- 20:29something number like 22 numbers retired and there's only 99.
- 20:32Well technically 100 if you can't 0.
- 20:34But like you, you only have so many numbers.
- 20:37And if you retire 22 of them, OK, well, it's going to lead
- 20:40less numbers for people to be able to pick moving on.
- 20:43And that's that's completely why the NFL actually had to change
- 20:46their number rules of I believe the Giants and the Bears have
- 20:51the most numbers retired. And it's like one was
- 20:55technically retired by the Giants until the league
- 20:57neighbors was able to get permission to where #11 by Phil
- 21:01Simms, number 56 for Lawrence Taylor.
- 21:04The Bears have I think 34, seven, 34 seven there.
- 21:17There's a few. There's actually a ton more by
- 21:19Chicago that's been retired 8089 for Mike Ditka.
- 21:23I think 51 like like all of them have been like 58.
- 21:28I believe all of those numbers have been retired by Chicago.
- 21:31The Giants, the Yankees, like all of these different teams
- 21:34have so many numbers retired. And don't get me wrong, if if
- 21:37they are that player that that makes that big an impact on the
- 21:41franchise, you know, that's completely understandable.
- 21:44But when you have a franchise that's been around for, you
- 21:47know, hundreds of years and with the potential idea that it's
- 21:51going to continue to be around for hundreds of years, I would
- 21:54higher the number. Like there, I know there's some
- 21:57colleges like you can wear the number, but then you have like a
- 21:59patch or like a sticker of like, hey, these are other great
- 22:02players that have worn this number too, to to keep keep the
- 22:05relevance to keep the history attached to that number, but not
- 22:08keep the number out of circulation kind of thing.
- 22:10So that like I said that that's kind of my thought on it.
- 22:13I don't think it's the end of the world if you don't retire a
- 22:17number. And especially now in college
- 22:20football, I mean, the way the landscape is currently set up of
- 22:24you are constantly having to fight other people for your
- 22:26roster. You're constantly having to
- 22:28fight people as far as getting your recruits in.
- 22:29And that was already an issue to start with before of, you know,
- 22:33how do we get a recruit in, you know, how do we keep this guy
- 22:36from potentially going to a rival or potentially going to
- 22:38another conference? And especially if they're like a
- 22:40home grown state kid, It's like how we how we keep them in
- 22:43state, How do we keep them here and keep our team growing?
- 22:47And sometimes for some kids, the number, the number is it.
- 22:50I mean, when you think about nil and you think about, you know,
- 22:53bringing your, your name, your image, your likeness and your
- 22:56brand, that's what a lot of kids have been taught how to do of
- 23:00like, hey, you know, T look at TB 12, for example, it's like
- 23:04he's always going to be associated with 12.
- 23:06It's like I have to have that number.
- 23:07Like that is my brand. And that's how some of these
- 23:09kids, you know, that's kind of their business model.
- 23:12And realistically, like, when you're an athlete like that,
- 23:14especially collegiate, potentially going pro and you
- 23:17can get paid money for this, you have to have a brand.
- 23:20So if you're a kid that's like, man, I want to potentially go to
- 23:23LSU. And it's like, oh, but I can't
- 23:25wear #5 and I've worn #5 my whole life.
- 23:28Maybe I won't go to LSU like that.
- 23:31That could be a real thing. MJ Yeah, I guess they can have
- 23:35an elite group win. And if it gets retired again,
- 23:39they might find out there's more honor being able to wear it.
- 23:41Most children pick a number as they looked up to the number 11
- 23:44player. And there's another guy I know
- 23:46people aren't as big of a fan of of him, but Emmanuel Acho
- 23:53brought this up for him. You know, he, he idolized #11 at
- 23:57Texas, because I believe that was Derek Johnson for the
- 24:00Chiefs. That's who he grew up watching
- 24:03and emulating when it came to playing football.
- 24:05And that's who he wanted to wear.
- 24:07And he was like, no. So for a lot of kids, yeah.
- 24:12I mean, that would be an absolute dream.
- 24:14I mean, for think about any kid, if they're 678 years old and
- 24:19they remember watching Jayden play, if they're, if they're old
- 24:22enough. And it's like, hey, I want to
- 24:24wear #5 because that's who I want to emulate.
- 24:26You can even go as far as into like basketball.
- 24:28Back in the day, everybody wanted to wear 23 because of
- 24:31Jordan, everybody wanted to wear 34 because of a shack.
- 24:35Everybody wanted to wear 33 because of Larry Bird.
- 24:38And then when Allen Iverson came in, everybody wanted to wear 3.
- 24:40Like it. If you have the honor and you
- 24:44have the approval to be able to wear a number like that, it's
- 24:48cool to be able to do because like you said MJ, you get to
- 24:52have the honor of wearing it. Maybe it's a childhood hero.
- 24:55Maybe it's a maybe it's a childhood hero for somebody
- 24:57else, but it's also an honor because that team, that
- 25:00franchise, that organization, whoever feels, hey, we think
- 25:05with your talent, your leadership capabilities, how you
- 25:08play, whatever the intangibles or tangibles may or may not be,
- 25:12we have this big of faith in you.
- 25:14We want to associate you with a legends number like, and that to
- 25:19me is a really cool thing. And then a little bit of a side
- 25:24tangent before we before we wrap this argument up, there was one
- 25:28more argument that was made that that kind of made me laugh
- 25:32because I do remember this happening.
- 25:35There's a kid, I believe it was, I think it was Deuce night at
- 25:39Auburn. I don't think he's at Auburn
- 25:41anymore, but it was a quarterback going to Auburn.
- 25:44He's very highly touted prospect coming out of high school.
- 25:47He wanted to wear Cam Newton's number 2 and he even called Cam
- 25:51Newton and said, hey, man, can I wear your number two there at
- 25:55Auburn? And to censor quote can he said,
- 26:00and I quote F no, make your own number, make you make a number
- 26:06that's associated with you. So I mean, I get that same
- 26:10argument too from guys who if they made a legacy, it's like,
- 26:12no, that I did that with that number.
- 26:15You make your own journey, you be your own.
- 26:18You don't try to be me, don't try to be Cam Newton, try to be
- 26:22whoever you are individually and you make the number that you
- 26:27want to make. And it was kind of the same
- 26:29argument that people made for Abdul Carter last year coming
- 26:31out of Penn State to go to the Giants.
- 26:33He wanted to wear 11 retired, he wanted to wear 56 retired.
- 26:36And both of them said no. So to me, it's like you, I do
- 26:43get it, of wanting to kind of have that honor and acknowledge
- 26:46them and with the hopes that you're going to also meet those
- 26:50expectations. But at the same time, yeah,
- 26:52make, make your own story. Make your own number.
- 26:54You are uniquely you. There's only one of you in the
- 26:57entire world. Whether you're a twin, triplet,
- 26:59quadruplet, octopolet, whatever the case may be, there's only
- 27:03one of you. So make your journey.
- 27:05Make your number, who you want to be and how you want it to be
- 27:10associated. But nonetheless, good topic and
- 27:13I appreciate that, MJ, appreciate you, appreciate you
- 27:15chiming in on that, especially with you being a Penn State fan
- 27:17because like I said, I heard Lavar say it and and I really
- 27:20liked his take on. So with that, though, we, like I
- 27:25said, we're 11 days away from college football.
- 27:28We're still a couple weeks away from the NFL kicking off the
- 27:32beginning of September. But in the meantime, we have the
- 27:35preseason and the pre season. I don't I don't dive deep into
- 27:39the pre season typically. I might, you know, point out a
- 27:42couple things. I know Mike and I kind of talked
- 27:44a little bit last week with pre season about, you know, how some
- 27:48teams did, if there's any rookies we think may or may not
- 27:50stand out. I know Fernando Mendoza ended up
- 27:53having a pretty good, you know, a little bit of a season debut
- 27:57for the Raiders as far as some of his performance goes against
- 28:00some of the first string starters for Arizona.
- 28:03But overall, though, I mean, it's all vanilla schemes.
- 28:06There's not really a whole lot of, you know, fanciness.
- 28:08It's just kind of get them an idea of what a little bit of
- 28:11game speed might look like. And of course, some of the guys
- 28:14that they're playing with may or may not even be on the roster,
- 28:16if they themselves are even on the roster.
- 28:19But one of the big things I was talking about was Jackson Dart.
- 28:22The Vikings played the Giants this past weekend.
- 28:27It was a really ugly game. I mean, it's pre season.
- 28:29I didn't expect anything pretty or fancy, but man it was bad.
- 28:33The Jackson dart gets hit by the Vikings quarterback.
- 28:38Nasty hit. He was just completely
- 28:40unblocked, takes a hit, immediately goes to the ground.
- 28:44After that he gets taken into the blue medical tent.
- 28:47Jameis Winston comes in, finishes Waring.
- 28:50I believe he did end up coming out for one more drive or maybe
- 28:53even the what was left of that drive after they evaluated him
- 28:57for a concussion and he he ultimately into finishing.
- 29:00But it's not something that you want to see, especially if
- 29:03you're a giants fan. It's not something you want to
- 29:05see from your your star quarterback, especially from
- 29:08last year taking a hit like that in a meaningless pre season
- 29:12game. This is one of those it's it's
- 29:16where I do kind of have a little bit of an issue with the pre
- 29:21season. And I've talked about this
- 29:23personally myself for the last few years.
- 29:26I get the purpose of pre season. You know, sometimes it's getting
- 29:29guys a little bit acclimated. You know, you can only do so
- 29:32much in practice. You can only do so much even in
- 29:35like 1 on one practice where you practice with another team
- 29:38simultaneously. So you get a little bit of an
- 29:40idea there. So I I get that in the sense of
- 29:45maybe getting guys a little bit of rust, maybe get him into
- 29:47start to get him into that game shape, get him used to getting
- 29:49hit and whatnot, getting ready. It's a first preseason game of
- 29:54the year, man. Like you still got two more
- 29:56after this. You could have easily put him in
- 29:59next game in the last game if you wanted to.
- 30:01He didn't have to put him in the first game, but for him to take
- 30:04a hit like that and then it would immediately go into the
- 30:06blue tent, that's just absolutely insane.
- 30:10And it's not a good start. And if I was a Giants fan,
- 30:13that's not a good start that I'd want to see from Coach Harbaugh.
- 30:15Like, hey, why is our starting guy out there just getting
- 30:18absolutely blown to smithereens by an unblocked defensive guy
- 30:24from Minnesota? So it it did bring up apparently
- 30:29a good point of Jackson, Dart said.
- 30:31He's kind of annoyed with the fact that every time he gets
- 30:33hit, they immediately bring him into the blue tent and they
- 30:36start evaluating him for a concussion.
- 30:40That does bring up a couple of things.
- 30:42One, it's at least hopefully they're recognizing that the
- 30:46whole CTE issue, the whole issue with all that and just players
- 30:50health in general truly matters and that they're trying to make
- 30:55sure that they're doing their due diligence.
- 30:58But it also makes you wonder, you know, is he taking more hits
- 31:01and is he truly not healthy to the point where he's where
- 31:06they're having to basically force him to go in the medical
- 31:08tent. And and some guys are like that,
- 31:10especially in a competitive sport where and if you go down
- 31:13and the next guy comes up, you may not get your spot back.
- 31:16Now for him, he's kind of in that sweet spot because don't
- 31:19get me wrong, I like Jamo, I like Jameis Winston, he's
- 31:22entertaining. He's he's grown a lot, but he's
- 31:26he's still funny. I don't think you have to worry
- 31:29about losing your job. James Winston.
- 31:31But the but nonetheless, it it does bring up a good point of I
- 31:36get where they want to be protective.
- 31:37I get where they want to make sure that you know, they're
- 31:40they're doing their due diligence for him.
- 31:44But it, but I also feel that it's kind of tiptoeing a line of
- 31:49you're, you're evaluating so much that then when is the
- 31:53question going to be brought up of when should we just get rid
- 31:55of this as a whole? Now I know that's always kind of
- 31:58a a fear tactic and a fear topic that everybody brings up I think
- 32:02every single year as they kind of adjust the rules for some
- 32:06stuff like when you can't hit a quarterback, you can't hit a
- 32:09player like below the knees, you can't hit a player above his
- 32:13head, all these different and it's for player safety.
- 32:16And it's one of those I, I don't disagree, I think that there
- 32:20does need to an extent be some type of safety in there.
- 32:23Like you can't just be letting guys absolutely get their heads
- 32:25taken off from a head or their knees and legs blown out from
- 32:29underneath them from, from a guy just doing a tackle and whatnot.
- 32:34So I mean, the there does need to be a level of safety, but
- 32:39truly, I don't know if the NFL would ever go to the point of
- 32:41kind of being like a non, basically a non touching or flag
- 32:46Football League. I don't think that would ever
- 32:47happen. I think just because the amount
- 32:50of money that they make now, again, they're going to continue
- 32:53to emphasize safety. They're probably going to, you
- 32:55know, crack down a lot of things, but I don't necessarily
- 32:58think they would get rid of it. Now, obviously it changes every
- 33:00single year. There's always going to be
- 33:02controversial calls. There's always going to be
- 33:03controversial hits, but I don't think it's ultimately going to
- 33:08end the game that we love that much.
- 33:11But none the less though, it it, it was just sad and weird to see
- 33:15Dart have to take a hit like that in the preseason.
- 33:20It wasn't the first play, but it was kind of end of the first
- 33:22drive and he was he was just completely unblocked and hit.
- 33:28And so it it will be interesting to see how they how they decide
- 33:31to go with the rest of the season.
- 33:33Like I said, if it was me, if you want to start him in the
- 33:37starting offensive line for like a drive, I would say do it like
- 33:42third game and I would only do it for like 1, maybe 2 drives if
- 33:46you really feel it's necessary. Because obviously any given
- 33:49play, any given drive, you can have a massive, you know, season
- 33:53ending injury happen potentially and hopefully not, but you
- 33:58unfortunately could even have a career ending injury happen.
- 34:00It's just the way the it's the way the world works, it's the
- 34:03way the game works. So hopefully that does not
- 34:06happen. But none the less though that
- 34:08that is the risk that they run. So hopefully the Harbaugh and
- 34:12the Giants get that, get that figured out.
- 34:15But the last topic I wanted to talk about though is came out
- 34:19last week, I believe. Excuse me, This came out last
- 34:25week and it was the official AP top 25 poll and it wasn't too
- 34:33far off of what the coach's poll was.
- 34:36There's a few teams ultimately, you know, getting switched
- 34:39around. I don't remember what they were
- 34:41off time, but I mean, they were super, super close.
- 34:44I mean, there's some on here I can bring it up to show that it
- 34:49it was it was really close. If I remember correctly, the
- 34:53coaches had Texas and Notre Dame flipped.
- 34:56They had Oklahoma, Ole Miss flipped, LSU and Alabama
- 35:00flipped, believe Washington and Penn State were flipped.
- 35:08I think SMU was just after Tennessee.
- 35:12And then the other major difference with them was Clemson
- 35:16was at 23 in the coaches AP in the coaches poll and Louisville
- 35:22was actually not even in here and Houston was bumped down at
- 35:2524. So this is the official
- 35:28preseason top 25 of how it looks right now.
- 35:31And I it's kind of funny when you look at it, if the only one
- 35:37that I would say I really kind of disagree with.
- 35:41But then after that, honestly, it's it's kind of a hodgepodge
- 35:45of however you want to put them, however you want to lay them
- 35:48out. I think I would honestly put
- 35:51Oregon at one. Now, some of this might be, you
- 35:57know, Ohio State has the continuity of Ryan Day still.
- 36:02We still have the continuity of Matt Patricia on defense.
- 36:05The defense has been solid the last few years.
- 36:08I know even last year they thought that the defense was
- 36:09going to take a step back because of all the draft picks
- 36:12that went before then. They ultimately ended up being
- 36:15one of the best defenses in the country.
- 36:17And obviously, they have to replace Brian Hartline with
- 36:19Arthur Smith. How does that ultimately end up
- 36:21working out? But they do get the the niceness
- 36:24of the continuity of Julian saying they still have Jeremiah
- 36:27Smith. How does Chris Hendry junior
- 36:30ultimately end up working out there on the offense?
- 36:33And you know, how does he how does he respond?
- 36:35Because we're likely teams are going to try to be doubling
- 36:37Jeremiah Smith. So is Chris Hendry junior going
- 36:40to be getting a lot of looks? And I believe even the third,
- 36:43the third wide receiver, I don't remember his name off the top of
- 36:45my head, but how is he going to also look?
- 36:47Because I mean, they could both have potentially really big
- 36:49seasons just because everybody's going to be trying to guard and
- 36:54double team Jeremiah Smith. If it was me, though, I'd
- 36:58probably put Oregon at 1:00 just because of all the talent that
- 37:01they had. They brought a ton of pieces
- 37:03back. They really didn't lose a lot in
- 37:07the draft. Now, they lost key players.
- 37:09They lost theenaman, they lost the tight end of The Jets.
- 37:13So I mean, they lost guys, but they still brought Dante Moore
- 37:16back. Now they have Dylan Riola has
- 37:17his backup. So if anything does happen to
- 37:19Dante, they have somebody who has starting experience, who has
- 37:23a better supporting cast of team around him.
- 37:26So there's a lot of good things that can come out of that.
- 37:30Georgia, I don't Georgia F3 is the only other one that kind of
- 37:34makes me makes me think a little bit.
- 37:39And honestly and truthfully, if it was me building it, I would
- 37:44probably move Georgia to about 5 and maybe move Notre Dame or
- 37:49Texas up to three, three and four.
- 37:52You can kind of take your pick as far as who you'd want to be
- 37:55at 3 or 4, either Texas or Notre Dame, That's where I'd put them.
- 37:58I'd move Georgia down to five. Biggest reason being I don't
- 38:01know who George is going to throw it to.
- 38:03I don't know what their wider super room looks like.
- 38:05That's been the biggest question mark for them pretty much all
- 38:07offseason is who, who's cutter Stockton in a throw to?
- 38:11What are they going to look like offensively, secondary wise,
- 38:15they are one of the best secondaries in the country right
- 38:16there with Alabama. But again, offensively, can they
- 38:20move the ball and who, who's going to Stockton in a throw to?
- 38:23So that that would be 1 change. I would probably make Indiana
- 38:26six. There is a lot of questions
- 38:28there as far as how does Josh Hoover ultimately end up
- 38:30looking? How does he do again, Miami kind
- 38:33of the same thing. They lost a lot of guys in the
- 38:35draft on the offensive line and the defensive line.
- 38:39And obviously how does Darien Mensa end up filling in their
- 38:42quarterback after Carson Beck is gone?
- 38:44So I, it's like once you get to like 5 through kind of seven,
- 38:50kind of toss those and I, I could probably make an argument
- 38:53for or against them. Texas A and M8 kind of the same
- 38:56thing. They brought a lot of guys back.
- 38:58They filled in a lot of holes from the transfer portal to me,
- 39:02though. Can Texas A&M take that next
- 39:03step? And what I mean by that is can
- 39:05they get a big quality win against somebody who, you know,
- 39:10has kind of been a boogeyman for them?
- 39:12Now, I know Texas A&M, they go to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama.
- 39:17And then, of course, they have to face Texas.
- 39:19They have to face LSU again, but they face an in Death Valley.
- 39:23And if I remember correctly, they host Texas this time.
- 39:26So they at least get that benefit.
- 39:28But they need to get a big win like that.
- 39:30And you know, this has been a Texas A&M team.
- 39:34They always come in very highly recruited, very highly talented.
- 39:37They always have a ton of talent on Texas A&M, but it's like they
- 39:41can never put it all together. Last year they went 11 and one
- 39:44they only lost being 2 Texas, which was kind of a shocker of
- 39:49all things. I'm not saying they have to win
- 39:51every single game, but but they got to show that they're they
- 39:54have some toughness and they have some grit.
- 39:56Like you won 11 games, made it in the playoffs, but then you
- 39:59lose 6:50 to Miami, which is. Kind of crazy to have lost it in
- 40:04that kind of a manner because and you know, no knock to them
- 40:08or Miami because Miami ended up going to the national
- 40:10championship. But it that that is kind of one
- 40:13of the craziest parts is it's like Texas A&M has to take that
- 40:17next step forward and can they do that now?
- 40:20I think 8 is a pretty good place for them just because, again,
- 40:23they brought a lot of pieces back and they, you know,
- 40:25supplemented a lot of positions. But we'll see how it goes.
- 40:29Ole Miss at 9. I don't disagree with this just
- 40:32because kind of the same thing. They're bringing a lot of
- 40:34continuity back. You know, Pete Golding is still
- 40:37the head coach. Now, obviously, they're fully
- 40:39replacing the offensive staff. They still have Trinidad
- 40:41Chambliss, they still have Kiwan Lacey.
- 40:45But again, what do they look like post Lane Kiffin and
- 40:47Charlie Wise Junior? I think that's what a lot of
- 40:49people forget is throughout that playoff run, they still had
- 40:52Charlie Wise Junior, they still had a lot of that offensive
- 40:55staff that Lane Kevin ended up bringing with him to LSU.
- 41:00But will they have that, you know, coming into how how that
- 41:04offense look with Chandlers and Kaywon Lacy going into this
- 41:09Oklahoma at 10? I like this, especially if John
- 41:12Metier can stay healthy. I definitely think they're a top
- 41:14ten team kind of the same thing. They didn't really lose a whole
- 41:17lot of pieces on that defense, which absolutely carried them
- 41:20last year. The biggest question though, can
- 41:24can the offense be above average to complement that defense?
- 41:30It feels like every single year, and Joel Klatt even brought this
- 41:32up and I wholeheartedly agree that it feels like every single
- 41:37year. Oklahoma either had a really
- 41:39good offense for so many years and the defense couldn't stop a
- 41:42wet paper bag or like last year, the defense was absolutely stout
- 41:46and the offense couldn't could not move hardly at all.
- 41:48Now, not necessarily fair because you know Mater got hurt.
- 41:52Prior to him getting hurt, he was a Heisman front runner, got
- 41:56hurt, had surgery, came back and just wasn't the same post.
- 41:58Then. If they can keep him healthy and
- 42:00if he can stay healthy, I think we're in a completely different
- 42:04conversation though. LSU at 11.
- 42:07I'll be honest, even as LSU fan, I don't know if I'd put him at
- 42:1011 and a, and a majority of that is I just don't know what to
- 42:14expect. I don't know what the offense is
- 42:15going to look like. On paper.
- 42:17They should be solid on paper. Everything is there.
- 42:21Obviously they kept like Blake Baker is the defensive
- 42:25coordinator for them and they bring, you know, Charlie Weis
- 42:29from Ole Miss Lane Kiffin is obviously a guru on the offense.
- 42:33They have Sam Levitt from Arizona State who when he gets
- 42:37out of the pocket, he scrambles, he makes magic happen.
- 42:40But again, I just, I just, I don't know what to expect
- 42:43because there's 40 plus new guys coming into this LSU roster and
- 42:49Lane Kipnest to try to make them all work.
- 42:50Now, he did it at Ole Miss. He was he was very successful.
- 42:53And I mean, they had a great year last year.
- 42:57I don't know how well that translates over to LSU.
- 43:00And again, a lot of new guys, new system, how does it work?
- 43:04Don't know. So I don't know if I would
- 43:07necessarily put them at 11. I don't know where I would put
- 43:09them, but it's like, I don't know about that, but we'll see.
- 43:13Texas Tech at 12. I kind of see that.
- 43:15I feel like had they been able to keep Sorsby in that whole
- 43:18situation, not falling through, I think sort, I think Texas Tech
- 43:21would have been in the top ten. I would have probably put them
- 43:23at 8 or 9 and either bump Ole Miss or Oklahoma, maybe even
- 43:28Texas A&M kind of up or down a little bit.
- 43:31But I would have had Texas Tech in the top ten had Brandon
- 43:34Sorsby stayed. They're going to go with Will
- 43:37Hammond, who he balled out last year against Utah.
- 43:40But again, there's just a lot of unproven question marks.
- 43:42They did really well in the transfer portal.
- 43:44They supplemented a lot of guys. They lost a lot of guys.
- 43:47But I mean, I, I still expect them to be able to come out of
- 43:50the Big 12 with no issue. Maybe against BYU, but
- 43:54ultimately I I would have them winning it.
- 43:58Alabama 13, I think that's kind of AI think that's more of a
- 44:02testament to Alabama's defense more than anything.
- 44:06They lost a lot of key guys on offense.
- 44:08They lost Kate Proctor, they lost Giovanni Bernard.
- 44:12They lost a lot of pieces everywhere and of course they
- 44:17lost Ty Simpson as well. So who who's it going to be a
- 44:20quarterback? Is it going to be Keylon
- 44:21Russell? Is it going to be Austin back?
- 44:23Who who is going to be quarterback for the tide?
- 44:26And then of course, how does Caitlin de Boer respond to all
- 44:29of this? Because I mean, everybody's
- 44:31potentially calling for a job now we got an extension.
- 44:33So it's not like he's he could get fired.
- 44:35I doubt it. But you know, at 13, I think a
- 44:39lot of that's just a pure nod to their defense and how good their
- 44:42defense is more likely going to be this season, especially their
- 44:45secondary. So I I don't necessarily hate
- 44:48them being at 13, but it is kind of nice not to see them in the
- 44:52top ten. Just personalized USC at 14.
- 44:56I feel like that's fairly respectable.
- 44:59You know, Jade, my office back, they obviously lost some guys in
- 45:01the draft, especially like Kyle Lemon.
- 45:03That's going to be hard to replace.
- 45:05But I mean, this is probably going to be 1 of Lincoln Riley's
- 45:08best years as far as you're in the Big 10.
- 45:11It's now you're 3 going into the Big 10.
- 45:14You have a fairly decent schedule.
- 45:16A lot of your tough opponents you get to host, but you do have
- 45:20a couple tough Rd. games that you have to go on the road in
- 45:23the cold in the Midwest, like Indiana in the middle of
- 45:26November. That's going to be a cold game,
- 45:29but, but, but we'll see. I feel like 14 is a good spot
- 45:32for them though. BYU at 15, kind of the same
- 45:35thing. They brought a lot of people
- 45:36back, you know, Baerbachmeyer still there.
- 45:38They were able to keep their star running back.
- 45:40Now, one of the issues they did lose their star wide receiver
- 45:43because of some personal conduct issues there for BYU.
- 45:47So who does Baerbachmeyer throw to?
- 45:48What does that ultimately look like?
- 45:50Now, the benefit is they are in the Big 12.
- 45:52They typically don't have to face Texas Tech unless they make
- 45:55the Big 12 championships. So there is a very high
- 45:57possibility that they they may be sitting there at the end of
- 46:00the season at 11 and O 12 and O. Their biggest test will
- 46:04definitely be Notre Dame. And of course, they have Utah as
- 46:08well. But it it won't be the end of
- 46:10the world. But it'll be interesting to see
- 46:13how the Cougs look at. But I I don't mind them at 15,
- 46:16Michigan at 16. I feel like that's kind of a nod
- 46:19to Kyle Woodingham. The offenses should be better
- 46:21for Bryce Underwood as far as the wide receivers go, They have
- 46:24a five star prospect. They have French from Texas.
- 46:28The defense should be a little bit better, especially with Kyle
- 46:30Whittingham as head coach. So Michigan at at 16, I feel
- 46:34like it's a pretty decent spot. They can and with their
- 46:36schedule, they still have an opportunity to move up.
- 46:39And you know, they and I think even if they lose, especially to
- 46:42someone like USC and they they still have kind of a chance.
- 46:46And I know they face Indiana, but I believe it's in Ann Arbor.
- 46:50If they can get a win there, it's like, OK, there's there's
- 46:53potential for us to root. There's room for growth.
- 46:55There's room for us to move up. Now, they do have a tough, tough
- 46:58right out of the gate and get facing off against Oklahoma.
- 47:01But again, if they can keep it close, if there's something
- 47:03there, I don't think that'll hurt their rankings too bad.
- 47:06Washington to 17, kind of same thing.
- 47:09Jed Fish is really good. They have DuMont Williams and
- 47:11they're replacing some people, but it's not the end of the
- 47:13world. They have probably one of the
- 47:15best winning records when it comes to being at home in Husky
- 47:17Stadium. So I like them to 17.
- 47:20Penn State at 18 is kind of interesting just because of we
- 47:23we don't know what Penn State's going to look like.
- 47:25It's all good chunk of Iowa State players all there in Happy
- 47:29Valley. I'm playing Verino, Matt
- 47:32Campbell now with Rocco Vecht. So 18 I don't feel like is bad.
- 47:37I think the only thing that might hurt them is the fact that
- 47:41they have such an easy schedule. Like they only have, I think, a
- 47:44couple big games that they have to play.
- 47:47If I remember right, they don't have to face Ohio State.
- 47:49They don't have to face Oregon. I don't believe they have to
- 47:52face Indiana either. So it's like kind of all but
- 47:55kind of walk your way potentially into competing for a
- 47:59Big 10 championship spot. But it does kind of make me
- 48:03wonder too, will you have enough there to be able to warrant
- 48:08moving up in the rankings because of who you face as far
- 48:11as quality of opponents and whatnot?
- 48:13We'll see SMU and 19 kind of the same thing.
- 48:16I feel like that's not a bad spot for them to start with.
- 48:20And honestly and truthfully, there's been a lot of people,
- 48:22myself included, feel that after Miami because I think a lot of
- 48:26people have Miami all but locked in the ACC Championship game,
- 48:31Louisville versus SMU, that we a lot of people, I think whoever
- 48:36probably wins that battle, as long as they don't trip up
- 48:38anywhere in the future, more than likely those are good.
- 48:41That's going to be the other team that faces Miami for the
- 48:43ACC championship. Now, that could be completely
- 48:46wrong or Virginia Tech can maybe, you know, sneak in there.
- 48:48Maybe both teams slip up, barring any crazy injuries or
- 48:51firings. But with Jeff Brom, they're
- 48:55Louisville. Anything's possible.
- 48:57SMU brings a lot back as far as Jennings as the quarterback.
- 49:01Brett Lashley, the head coach has done great with SMU.
- 49:04Especially because they don't get any of the conference
- 49:06revenue money. Like they joined the ACC and
- 49:08said, no, we won't. If you let us join, you don't
- 49:11have to pay us. We'll we'll take everything
- 49:13ourselves crazy. But it's absolutely working.
- 49:17Tennessee at 20 categories spent, kind of a nod to them
- 49:20just because the talent they had.
- 49:21I feel like Tennessee's kind of in the same, same position as
- 49:24Alabama. Is it George McIntyre, is it
- 49:26Brendan Fraser? You know who, who is it?
- 49:28Who is it that's quarterbacking the balls?
- 49:31So we'll see how that ultimately ends up going.
- 49:33And oh, Mike and Randy balls. I like Tennessee, even though
- 49:37I'm an LSU fan. Tennessee's kind of that other
- 49:39team, the SEC, like I can rock with them It it'll be
- 49:43interesting to see how they go. So 20, I feel like it's still
- 49:45kind of a nod to Josh Hypo, what Tennessee's been able to do with
- 49:48the past Utah 21 kind of the same thing.
- 49:52I respect to the team that's built.
- 49:54Dev and Dampier are still coming back there in Utah now.
- 49:57They lost a lot of key pieces as far as offensive line, a lot of
- 50:00transfers to Michigan and whatnot.
- 50:02So it'll be interesting to see. But again, they're kind of in a
- 50:05sweet spot of, you know, they don't have the toughest schedule
- 50:08in the Big 12. They don't have the easiest, but
- 50:09they don't have the toughest. They're in the Big 12.
- 50:11Anything is possible and and I feel like once you get to 21 to
- 50:1525, you know, kind of any win can maybe bump you up a little
- 50:19bit. But even if you lose, it's not
- 50:20completely and totally the end of the world.
- 50:23Same with Iowa, That's kind of respect to Kurt Ference and
- 50:27whatnot there in Kinnock. So I mean, shout out to them
- 50:31again, I think defensively they're going to be good.
- 50:33It's going to be a huge offensive question though. 23
- 50:38with Houston. I believe Willie Fritz is the
- 50:39head coach, kind of a head, kind of a nod to them.
- 50:42They bring Connor Wegman back, their starting quarterback.
- 50:45Houston should be better again, probably one of those teams that
- 50:48may be vying for a, a, a shot at the Big 12 championship.
- 50:53Now, they do have to face Texas Tech early on, which is kind of
- 50:57a pain in the butt for them. But again, if they can, if they
- 51:00can at least keep it close, if they can get a big win there,
- 51:03they should be OK. Now, Louisville at 24, obviously
- 51:07we talked about a lot of people have them potentially penciled
- 51:10in them or SMU as far as facing Miami for the ACC Championship.
- 51:14And Louisville does have a little bit of a tough schedule
- 51:16to start with. They start out the year facing
- 51:18old this, but it's in a neutral site, believe it's in Nashville
- 51:21if I remember correctly. And then they have to face SMU
- 51:24and they don't have anybody else.
- 51:25They don't have Clemson, they don't have Miami, they don't
- 51:27have Florida State, They don't do any of that.
- 51:29So I mean, if they can do or maybe they do have Florida State
- 51:32nonetheless, if they can keep going, especially with Jeff Brom
- 51:35and how he does everything, Louisville could be a team to
- 51:38watch out for in the ACC at least.
- 51:40So I mean, I feel like kind of 24 is kind of a nod to that of
- 51:43like, hey, we're going to give you a foot in the door.
- 51:47Let's see what you do with it. And then Missoula 25, like I
- 51:50said, I feel like 21 to 25 is one of those it's teams that are
- 51:54like just on the outside kind of looking in.
- 51:57If you were, if you're acquitting it to like college
- 51:59basketball, it's like they're on the bubble of looking at it.
- 52:02It's like we respect you, we respect the brand.
- 52:04You had a really good year. You maybe finish the year, you
- 52:08know, you have a history of being good.
- 52:09You're not good enough. We don't feel like you're in the
- 52:11top 15, but you're definitely a top 25 team.
- 52:15And I feel like it's kind of Mizzou.
- 52:16And it's funny because the teams that are just on the outside,
- 52:19the two biggest names that I'm kind of one of them, I'm really
- 52:22surprised they didn't put in over Mizzou was Clemson.
- 52:25Clemson had the next most votes as far as they were the number
- 52:292016 for the AP preseason top poll and Clemson sitting there
- 52:36right to 26. So they put Mizzou just ahead of
- 52:38them. But I mean a lot of that I think
- 52:39is due to what is Clemson going to look like.
- 52:42Now I have a lot of questions as far as what does Mizzou look
- 52:44like, but real is not there. The kid that transferred from
- 52:50Austin Simmons, I believe from old miss, he went to Mizzou in
- 52:54the transfer portal. So how does he look?
- 52:55But they have a Bob Hardy at running back.
- 52:57So I mean, I don't know what to expect from Mizzou, but I'm not
- 53:01going to sit here and say that they're going to be awful.
- 53:04So I feel like 25's not bad for them.
- 53:06And if I had to compare them up against Clemson, I probably
- 53:10would move them ahead of Clemson honestly, because again, I just
- 53:13don't know what to expect. Clemson had a lot of people
- 53:15drafted well. Kate Klubnick thing completely
- 53:17fell through. He's gone.
- 53:19They don't know who they're going to have a quarterback.
- 53:20Even Dabo said I don't know who I'm going to have a quarterback
- 53:23yet. We'll find out so it and then
- 53:27Florida, I believe was the next team after that, but it was like
- 53:29100 plus gap in between Clemson and Florida.
- 53:33But nonetheless, though excited, excited that there's only 11
- 53:36days left until we have college football back.
- 53:39So excited August 29th when we get college football back here
- 53:44in the US and funny enough, the very first game starts over in
- 53:47Ireland between UNC and TCU. So appreciate everybody tuning
- 53:52in. Appreciate everybody watching.
- 53:54We are almost to season 5 of Inside the Hoosier Mine, which
- 53:59is crazy to think. I technically started this back
- 54:02in 2020 right before COVID kicked off.
- 54:06And then of course I had the thought of, Oh yeah, I'll be
- 54:08able to do a podcast to have all this time at home wrong.
- 54:12I was military and medical. I didn't have no time off.
- 54:15So luckily I was able to get started more full time in 2021
- 54:20and keep it going. And then it slowly, slowly been
- 54:24more consistent throughout the throughout the years now.
- 54:27But I appreciate everybody tuning in.
- 54:29I forgot to mention at the beginning of the show, though,
- 54:31but a big shout out to military broadcast radio who helps give
- 54:34veterans boys. Thanks.
- 54:35Thank them for as as always, hosting, giving, giving veterans
- 54:41a platform, giving myself a platform to be able to talk
- 54:43sports and talk with people all the time.
- 54:46And of course for the ton of other great veteran hosts.
- 54:50So big shout out to military broadcast radio.
- 54:52If you want to help MBR out, not even me, just MBR as far as
- 54:57helping, you know, donate to a veteran, helping veterans get
- 54:59equipment, teaching them anything like that that MBR does
- 55:03because they do a ton of work for the community.
- 55:06Definitely check them out at MB Radio dot US.
- 55:09And then also big shout out to Gunfighter Beer Company.
- 55:12He has great beard care products.
- 55:13He's Marine out of South Carolina and stuff Always smells
- 55:16good, makes your beard feel great because guys got to take
- 55:19care of the beard. Got if if you're itchy, if you
- 55:22got like the beard dander, like the skin flakes on your shirt
- 55:25and whatnot. Just get you a little bit of
- 55:27beard oil, a little bit of beard oil, rub it together in your
- 55:29hands, rub it in your beard. Night and day difference.
- 55:32Your beard will smell better. It'll feel better.
- 55:34Your face will stop itching, probably even stop losing some
- 55:36of the hair there should help to start grow it back because it's
- 55:39getting some nutrients, it's getting some moisture.
- 55:43Definitely check him out, but appreciate everybody watching.
- 55:45We will be back next week because we'll do a, we'll do a
- 55:49prediction as far as who I have for the first, the first two big
- 55:53games for college football because like last year I only
- 55:57did Power 4 versus Power 4I won't do Power 4 versus Group 6.
- 56:00That's so many games too big of a pain in the butt.
- 56:03I only like to do Power 4 versus Power 4 because those are the
- 56:06games that matter to those. So we'll do those next week.
- 56:08What predictions? Probably a little bit more of
- 56:10NFL talk. And then after that we get right
- 56:13into the season as far as NFL and college football goes.
- 56:15So appreciate everybody tuning in, appreciate everybody
- 56:17watching and we will see you all later.
