- 0:00Hello, welcome to Ask Jigger, a weekly segment on Energy Empire
- 0:04where I answer your energy questions.
- 0:06Ask Jigger is supported by our friends at Octopus Energy.
- 0:10If you want to submit a question, the link is in the
- 0:12show notes. All right, let's get into it.
- 0:15Our first question is from our good friend Andy Refkin and he
- 0:19asks when you were running the energy loan program, there was
- 0:22an abundance and federal assets for clean energy inefficiency.
- 0:25You wisely told me that the key need was for community based
- 0:29energy mavens to connect local decision makers with federal
- 0:33resources. What's your advice to local
- 0:35leaders now? I would say that my advice is
- 0:37the same, right? I mean, I think when you think
- 0:39about how much energy costs have gone up and just how many
- 0:44solutions we have that are right to go, whether it's solar and
- 0:47battery storage or whether it's electric vehicles, whether it's
- 0:50heat pumps or insulation or you know, these days there's next
- 0:54generation technologies for heating, ventilation and air
- 0:56conditioning, right, to really reduce your costs of managing
- 1:00your HVAC units at your work. We have a lot of technologies
- 1:06that have paybacks that are less than four years that just aren't
- 1:09being installed. And when you ask people, they
- 1:13say, well, we've never heard of them.
- 1:14We don't know those companies, right?
- 1:16I mean, and so I talk about a lot of those companies on my
- 1:18LinkedIn or on my podcasts or on Twitter.
- 1:23But I think that we've got to collect that information.
- 1:26And we've got to go to City Council meetings.
- 1:28We've got to go to County Council meetings.
- 1:30And we've got to go to the school board meetings and say,
- 1:32hey, you know, this stuff is cost effective.
- 1:35How about we figure out how to deploy it at this moment of an
- 1:38energy crisis? The next question is from Joe
- 1:41Murray. And he's a student at Duke
- 1:45University and he was talking about being at a Goldman
- 1:48recruiting event this past fall and asking a managing director
- 1:53what he thinks about virtual power plants and how it'll
- 1:55influence valuations for utilities.
- 1:58Look, I think that at the end of the day, the virtual power plant
- 2:02grid utilization stuff that I'm working on, other people working
- 2:06on is not going to reduce utility stock prices.
- 2:10I think what it'll do is to get them to stop overspending on
- 2:14infrastructure that is underutilized.
- 2:16And so today, we're faced with 9% rate increases for as far as
- 2:21the eye can see. Whereas if they deploy virtual
- 2:24power plants, if they deploy grid enhancing technologies,
- 2:27advanced conductors, lots of stuff that's lower cost, then
- 2:31you could imagine using the grid that we've already paid for more
- 2:35efficiently and keeping rates flat, right?
- 2:39And then if you then add data center load growth, then you
- 2:42might actually be able to reduce the utility bills by 10%, right?
- 2:46So I think that this is not a bad thing for utilities as much
- 2:50as it's a culture change. And they're used to doing things
- 2:54the old, most expensive way. And we got to get them to do
- 2:57things in a way that's smarter for their repairs and their
- 3:00governors, frankly, many of whom are running for election right
- 3:03now. The next one is from Rod Adams.
- 3:07He asks, please explain why nuclear energy supporters should
- 3:11love cheap battery storage. And the answer is because it's
- 3:16not about nuclear and it's not about solar and it's not about
- 3:19wind. It's not about natural gas or
- 3:21coal or hydro. It's about the grid.
- 3:25The grid is the greatest engineering accomplishment of
- 3:29the 20th century, not any of those one technologies.
- 3:33And battery storage actually allows you to manage the grid
- 3:38better. So we have the largest commodity
- 3:41supply chain in the world that doesn't feature storage in the
- 3:45electric utility system. What do you think about our food
- 3:47system? Or we're all learning about
- 3:49storage with the Straits of Hormuz challenge in fuels, or
- 3:53whether we talk about other commodity supply chains, we
- 3:56feature storage. But in the grid, we don't really
- 4:00feature storage except for some, you know, like pumped hydro.
- 4:04And so now I think we're adding storage.
- 4:06And the storage helps nuclear, it helps solar, it helps wind,
- 4:09it helps natural gas, it helps everything run better.
- 4:12And higher grid utilization is how we get to lower electricity
- 4:17bills for everybody. Our last question is from karma
- 4:20dispensary from the energy subreddit on Reddit.
- 4:25And he says or she says. I live in Northern California
- 4:30and the utilities feel less reliable every year after buying
- 4:33a place. We're in the process of getting
- 4:35enough solar and batteries to be entirely self-sufficient.
- 4:39I know there are many benefits to distributed grids.
- 4:42I can't shake the impression that if everyone makes this
- 4:45decision, grids will be much worse off.
- 4:48Fewer users to spread capital investments over.
- 4:51Is mass disconnect something you think about much?
- 4:55And if it is a significant threat to the grid, look, I
- 5:00think mass affection is a significant threat to the grid
- 5:03as is not metering 2 point O as you get to 10% of all the homes
- 5:09in California having solar on them.
- 5:11But now we have NEM 3 point O NEM 3 point O features a much
- 5:15higher fixed cost and it also features that you don't really
- 5:19get paid much to export power back into the grid.
- 5:22So you're really running your home more like a micro grid
- 5:26where you basically take it off grid, right?
- 5:29That's awesome because remember, we are going to have to
- 5:32electrify everything. So right now the United States,
- 5:36our primary energy is roughly 25% electricity, 75% non
- 5:41electricity. China is at 35% electricity, 65%
- 5:46non electricity. So we should be able to meet
- 5:48what China has done if we went from 25% electricity to 35%
- 5:53electricity, right? That means a lot more electric
- 5:54vehicles. It means a lot more heat pumps.
- 5:57It means maybe induction stove, all of that is increased demand
- 6:02on the circuit that your home is on.
- 6:04And the question becomes how do we get the utility to use the
- 6:08battery that you're going to install as part of the grid?
- 6:12And that's a lot of the work that we've been doing in
- 6:14California through a nonprofit I support con deploy action, but
- 6:17it's also a lot of the arguments that we're having across the
- 6:21country. So when you think about data
- 6:23center load growth, when you think about all these other
- 6:25things, figuring out how to do virtual power plants with your
- 6:29battery is how we actually get to electrify more of the grid,
- 6:34more of our primary energy, while reducing electricity costs
- 6:39for everybody. So everybody should be thanking
- 6:42you for putting solar and battery storage in.
- 6:44And when the utility finally offers you a virtual power
- 6:48plant, you should opt in and get the discount that they offer you
- 6:51for doing that. That's it for this week's Ask
- 6:54Jigger. Thanks to our great friends at
- 6:57Octopus Energy for supporting this segment.
- 6:59If you've got a question you want me to answer, send it in.
