- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Tape where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Carlin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three I Take
- 0:16presented by SeatGeek. This is episode 457.
- 0:21I'll be your host Kyle Cord, and I'm here with my Co host Nadry
- 0:25is Nate. Let's go.
- 0:27Let's go. Let's get it going today.
- 0:30Let's. You know what?
- 0:31You know what? I don't care.
- 0:34I don't care that it's August. I don't care if you're tired.
- 0:41I don't care if it's Wednesday, let's go, let's go.
- 0:45There's not even. Any breaking news, but I had to.
- 0:47I had to sound the alarm. There's no breaking news.
- 0:50Just get it going. You know, let's get it going.
- 0:53Hey, super random right off the top, I put AI put a post out
- 0:58today. I was.
- 1:00I somehow ended up on threads. You know, the app threads.
- 1:04Heard about it, I thought that faded out pretty.
- 1:06Quickly, it's pretty much dead, but every now and then when
- 1:09you're scrolling Instagram, it'll show you like it'll give
- 1:12you a post or a preview of a post.
- 1:14And I'm like, oh, that. They do a really good job of
- 1:17like putting ones out that they know I'm going to click.
- 1:19This is like the Zuckerberg version of Twitter.
- 1:22Twitter yeah. So I was scrolling and I saw
- 1:26one. I don't know if it was directed
- 1:30at or I don't know if it's specific to baseball or just
- 1:32sports in general. The post was from Guillot Tier
- 1:40simply said stop having a quote. Second favorite team.
- 1:45What are your thoughts on that? Because I feel like that's
- 1:47something that that is not addressed enough.
- 1:50Specifically talking baseball. Because I, I, I've seen more
- 1:53comments it reading through threads, replies, comments,
- 1:57whatever of people being like, I, I love the Yankees, but the
- 2:02Reds are my second favorite team.
- 2:04What does that even mean? I don't know what I don't get.
- 2:07That that's not allowed I. Don't get that?
- 2:09Shouldn't be a thing. This is the problem with like
- 2:13the the the generation coming up that like didn't watch baseball
- 2:19growing up and probably still doesn't really watch that much.
- 2:23I think they just fall in love with like a specific player and
- 2:26they just kind of stay on that route.
- 2:31Which even if you do that, that's fine, but like stick to
- 2:34that team. This whole thing of having like
- 2:36a multiple favorite teams kind of kind of defeats the purpose
- 2:40of having a favorite team. It kind of dilutes the favorite
- 2:45element of it. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:49I don't know, man. I don't, I don't know.
- 2:51It's kind of like a like a safety net, if you will, where
- 2:56you're like, hey, this is my team, but like you can't hate me
- 3:00because I also root for this team that like everyone loves
- 3:04and no one has anything bad to say about.
- 3:07There's zero emotional commitment in that in that
- 3:10scenario because it, to use the example, if you're a Yankees
- 3:13fan, the Yankees fall flat on their faces.
- 3:15Well, I didn't even really care because I'm a Reds person
- 3:18anyway. Like, well, and I don't know why
- 3:20you'd be a Reds and a Yankees person, but I've seen crazier
- 3:22things. And so when you do that, you
- 3:25don't have to go through the highs and lows of of your sports
- 3:28team. It's an easy cop out.
- 3:30And it's, it's it's lazy. I'll just say it's lazy.
- 3:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know.
- 3:38I I there was that yeah. I remember watching the weird
- 3:42video where they went to Billy's outside of Yankee Stadium, which
- 3:48is like the like the main, like club, their stands like the old
- 3:52school bar, very short and narrow.
- 3:54And then there's Billy's, which is like turns into a club.
- 3:58And I think it was like John Boy or something like that going
- 4:00around like their media thing, going around asking random fans
- 4:04like who their second favorite team is.
- 4:06And I'm like, I don't. And that all had answers.
- 4:10All of them had answers. And I'm like, it's not how it
- 4:13works. I don't, I don't understand.
- 4:18I'm not a fan of it. I don't I don't understand.
- 4:20Like I, I, it's live and die. I live and die with the Yankees.
- 4:26I love good baseball. I'm not going to stop watching
- 4:29other teams. I'm not going to enjoy watching
- 4:32other like not not enjoy watching other, not not enjoy
- 4:36watching other players. I enjoy watching other players.
- 4:40There you go. Yeah, 22.
- 4:43But like, I'm not going to like, I'll, I'll happily scream at my
- 4:51TV for a Yankees game, but like, I'm not going to do that for the
- 4:56Marlins, you know? Let's go Marlins, though.
- 5:00Let's go Marlins, sorry for the rant off the top.
- 5:02Just had to get you had to get your take on it because I was I.
- 5:05Have a rant. I have a rant.
- 5:06Oh, let's hear. It's not a baseball rant.
- 5:08Oh, OK, let's see. I think it's just a stupidity
- 5:11rant. I so I I do sales for work.
- 5:15Yep, I'm on the phone a lot talking to people all around the
- 5:19country. There is a scary and I when I'm,
- 5:23when I mean scary, I'm going to go ahead and say like 8 out of
- 5:2910 people don't know what time zone they're in because I got to
- 5:35like link up. Like, hey, like if I put in my
- 5:37calendar, you know, they're asking for 5:00 for like, great.
- 5:40That's not 5:00 across the board.
- 5:43Then I say what time zone they're in and you'd be
- 5:45surprised how many people are absolutely baffled with that
- 5:49question, that 5th grader question.
- 5:54It's scary. A follow up to that, and I would
- 5:57ask you which one you think is scarier there.
- 5:59I won't, I won't. I'm not going to name names, but
- 6:02we know somebody out here that works for the government and
- 6:05I'll be like right down the road from DC.
- 6:06Somebody works in the government out here or we're we're friends
- 6:09with them. Actually, I may not even say
- 6:12we're friends with them for legal purposes.
- 6:13I'll just say we're acquaintances.
- 6:15Yeah, this individual asked us just like in passing.
- 6:22Look, we are, we were talking about our trip out to Hawaii and
- 6:24they they followed up with is Hawaii one of our 50 states?
- 6:30They work for the US government. I don't know which one's
- 6:34scarier, whether or not. We're in shambles.
- 6:36We're in trouble. We're in trouble.
- 6:40But I tell you what, Major League Baseball is trying to do
- 6:42its best to trying to save the country.
- 6:45They're bringing Major League Baseball to Bristol Motor
- 6:53Speedway next year. They said if this ship is going
- 6:59down, we're at least going to try to get a game at a racetrack
- 7:02first. Isn't Bristol in Connecticut?
- 7:05No, yes, but that's that's not this Bristol.
- 7:08This Bristol is in Tennessee, actually.
- 7:13You know, we're talking about things that people may or may
- 7:16not know. I feel like I should know this.
- 7:18Yep. Sure.
- 7:19Yeah, Bristol, TN. There's a Bristol, Bristol, VA,
- 7:23I believe. I definitely should know that.
- 7:25Yep. City city in Virginia.
- 7:27Yep. But they're bringing the game to
- 7:32Bristol, TN. Bristol Motor Speedway.
- 7:35It's going to be between the Reds and the Braves.
- 7:39The last time that the Bristol Motor Speedway had a sporting
- 7:44event outside of a race was the if you recall, which is mind
- 7:52blowing that this was eight years ago or it's going to be 9
- 7:56by the time they do it is Back in 2016, the Tennessee
- 8:01Volunteers took on the Virginia Tech Hokies and you know how
- 8:06many fans they drew for that game.
- 8:09I'm assuming college football. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:16Let's go with 120,000. 157,000 fans.
- 8:22Boy, it was the, I believe, the highest attended college
- 8:30football game of all time. But I was curious.
- 8:35I was like, OK, well, what about baseball?
- 8:37That's all fine and dandy for college football, but what about
- 8:40what about baseball? So I had to look it up.
- 8:44It was the which I I got to admit, I'd, I don't know if I
- 8:49really remember this all that much.
- 8:50I've I've vaguely remember it, but it was the exhibition game,
- 8:55preseason exhibition between the Dodgers and the Red Sox back in
- 9:002008 at the LA Coliseum and that brought in 115,000 people.
- 9:13Hey, look, I being being someone who has been to like a non like
- 9:19a like a sport in a different stadium arena event thing.
- 9:26I think there's ways that can make this very cool.
- 9:29And there's also ways that can absolutely ruin this.
- 9:34I'm curious because like I'm, I'm looking, you know, 'cause
- 9:38just to just to confirm the shape of a of a Motor Speedway
- 9:45is, you know, a lot of a lot like an Oval, correct.
- 9:50I just wanted to confirm that I'm really struggling to
- 9:56understand like what the setup's going to be like.
- 10:00Well, do we got like a Polo Ground situation going?
- 10:02On well, I can give you a little bit of context, maybe give you a
- 10:05little bit of assistance in trying to understand what this
- 10:08could potentially look like. Because that exhibition game at
- 10:12the LA Coliseum back in O8I did some digging around because I
- 10:16like I said, I vaguely remembered it.
- 10:17So I'm like, we got to figure out the dimensions here.
- 10:21The only dimension that I was able to find in my my brief
- 10:26research was the left field fence.
- 10:28You have any guesses how, how, how far back the left field
- 10:31fence was? Mind you this is in a Coliseum
- 10:37where they played college football and pretty sure it had
- 10:40a track like an Olympic style track.
- 10:42But it was they they could fit a foot, a college football field
- 10:46in the middle. I I'm going to say like 275.
- 10:51The left field fence was 250 feet away.
- 10:55I, I kid you not, it. And look, if you're bored, like
- 10:59if you're listening to this at work on on Thursday or Friday,
- 11:02whenever you listen to this and you're bored, pull up the
- 11:05highlights on YouTube of this exhibition game between the Red
- 11:10Sox and Dodgers. It is comical.
- 11:13It is the I'm I'm pretty sure the first highlight that popped
- 11:17up on the video I watched was a Raphael for call rope down the
- 11:22left field line barely like legs out are single but no interest
- 11:29in advancing and like the ball was smoked.
- 11:35And I'm pretty sure I, I didn't check the replay, but I'm pretty
- 11:38sure he was like 1/4 of the way to first base by the time the
- 11:41ball got to the fence 250 feet away.
- 11:45And here's the thing to, to alleviate or to, to get ahead of
- 11:52or prevent excessive home run hitting.
- 11:55They put do you have a do you have a guess as to how high the
- 11:59the screen was in left field that they put above this 250
- 12:04foot fence? How high is the Green Monster?
- 12:0837 I was. Going to say 39.
- 12:11OK, so let's go, let's go 25 feet high.
- 12:18According to Vince Scully on the broadcast, because he was there
- 12:22calling that game. I trust Vince Scully.
- 12:24And he said it multiple times and there was a conflicting
- 12:27number that I found online. But I'm going, I'm going to go
- 12:30ahead and trust the guy that's there calling the game that we
- 12:33can all safely assume did his research leading up to it.
- 12:36I would vote for Vince Scully for president, I think if if
- 12:40there if that time ever came. If it ever got to that point, we
- 12:45would have we would have certainly voted Vin Scully.
- 12:47I think I would have done it. According to Vin Scully on the
- 12:50broadcast in real time, he said the fence above the fence to
- 12:56prevent home runs was 65 feet high.
- 13:00It was a circus. So that's a lot.
- 13:06I say that that's crazy, that's OK, That's basic math here.
- 13:11That's like a little a little less than three green monsters
- 13:17Ish. No2.
- 13:19Less than two. 37 times. Two, what time zone are you in?
- 13:23That'd be 74, Yeah, a little less than two.
- 13:25I, I am in the Eastern Time zone.
- 13:28Hawaii, yes, Hawaii is the 50th state.
- 13:33So yeah, that that kind of gives you an idea what we're working
- 13:36with. I'm not saying I'm not.
- 13:38I'm going to go ahead and assume that that's it's not going to be
- 13:40that crazy for this game, given that it's going to be a regular
- 13:44season game. It's not like an exhibition that
- 13:46they're thrown together. We know it's a regular season
- 13:48game. Actually that's a good point
- 13:52because techni I guess. Let's rewind here.
- 13:54Technically they haven't made the announcement, which this
- 13:57stuff always cracks me up. It's like the person that leaked
- 14:00this in leaked this information as I was reading had to share
- 14:06this information under the cover of anonymity because they have
- 14:11not officially made the announcement that that
- 14:12announcement I believe is coming Friday.
- 14:14I think old uncle, uncle Robbie Manfred will be there in
- 14:18attendance at at Bristol for this announcement.
- 14:24Who do you really say is? I'm, I'm guessing it's got to be
- 14:27a regular season game because I think we're past the point like
- 14:32we're, we're becoming a much more national game.
- 14:36And there's if you're going to pull off an event like this,
- 14:39there needs to be some, some meat behind it.
- 14:41It can't just be like a hey, here's 100.
- 14:44And 50,000 fans, yeah. Yeah, here's a here's a spring
- 14:47training game. I don't think they're going to
- 14:49be doing all that just for the just for.
- 14:51The you think this is just to like feel out what what baseball
- 14:55could be in Tennessee, 'cause there's work, there's rumors,
- 15:02you know, there's a lot of people clamoring for Tennessee
- 15:05to specifically the Nashville area.
- 15:08I mean, they got baseball in Nashville.
- 15:10They got baseball in Nashville. It's a, it's a good point
- 15:13though. It's a great point.
- 15:15Like, test out the market a little bit, you know?
- 15:19The timing is interesting, I'll give you that.
- 15:21Yeah, we got the A's moving and then we're there's, there's
- 15:25rumors of expansion A. Lot of word of expansion.
- 15:28A lot of word I don't know. I so like what's center field
- 15:33going to be. I'm very, I'm still pretty lost
- 15:36on how we're looking at these dimensions.
- 15:39I'm going to be pissed if I'm playing center field that day.
- 15:42I mean. I'm not thrilled.
- 15:45I mean, just looking at a race track, you have to assume one of
- 15:48the corners is going to be a very, very short porch.
- 15:52Right. And then?
- 15:54And then there's just a wide open pasture.
- 15:58Couldn't tell you. And like, do you have fans just
- 16:01like casually sitting like behind home plate that are like
- 16:09200 feet away from home plate? That was the other thing.
- 16:12OK, So if you go back and look at that, if and when you look up
- 16:16the highlights from that LA Coliseum exhibition, you'll
- 16:20notice that the backstop, it's very, I mean, obviously it's
- 16:24makeshift, but it they didn't really put much effort into that
- 16:27at all. And if you look in that video,
- 16:29if you look down the first baseline, they have they had
- 16:33like those white temporary fences, like the white plasticky
- 16:39type fences going down the first baseline.
- 16:42I'm like, what are we? Is this a, a Sunday league
- 16:46softball championship game? What?
- 16:48What are we? Doing it gives me that vibe
- 16:50quite a bit. So I'll have to say the setup in
- 16:54situations going to be rather intriguing.
- 16:58I like how I like how just like MLB fans are just like, hey, can
- 17:06can we just get better umpires? And MLB is like we're going to
- 17:10Tokyo, We're playing in London, we're playing in Tennessee.
- 17:14We're going to do it in a freaking Motor Speedway.
- 17:17We're just like, hey, any chance we could like maybe not have two
- 17:23hour games? And we're like we're expanding
- 17:26to four more cities. We're going to move the A's like
- 17:29just doing new uniforms, just doing everything.
- 17:33But hey. Commissioner, is it all right if
- 17:38maybe if we're paying for MLBTV, like if we could actually just
- 17:41watch our local team? I'll tell you what, I'll do you
- 17:43one better baseball fan. I'm going to put you in a seat 3
- 17:471/2 miles away from home plate in Bristol, TN and you're going
- 17:50to like it. And I want you to buy this paper
- 17:53thin authentic game jersey. That's that's what we're doing.
- 17:57Mess. What a mess.
- 17:59What a mess. I'll still watch.
- 18:01I'll still watch. Who knows, we may end up even
- 18:04going on a whim. We may even be there.
- 18:06Who knows? I'm down.
- 18:08I'm down for the, you know how like I've never been to any of
- 18:12these races, like NASCAR, Indy, I've never been to any of those,
- 18:16but I I hear that they are insane.
- 18:19It's legit. And like that mid that like
- 18:22strip in the middle is just like RV's and stuff, right?
- 18:26People like Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah, on the infield.
- 18:29On the infield, yeah, is. That what they call it, the
- 18:31infield. Yeah.
- 18:33What if we just like have that going on, like on the sides, You
- 18:38know what I'm saying? So like the gaps where there
- 18:41aren't seats, that is where all the RV's are parked.
- 18:44And there's just like people drunk on top of their top of
- 18:47their RV's, just like, hey, they're look, base baseball has
- 18:51a real chance at A at a pretty epic crossover here.
- 18:54Or the dugout is one big RV and the guys just come out of the
- 18:59RV. How about they just leave the
- 19:01planet toss? Let's let's do that.
- 19:03I mean, what are we doing? This whole thing mapped out?
- 19:07Let's make center field 765 feet.
- 19:11We're going to make left field 220.
- 19:14We're going to have drunk rednecks hanging out in an RV in
- 19:18foul territory. I can't wait.
- 19:21I love it. I wish I was one of those drunk
- 19:23rednecks personally. Sounds nice.
- 19:27I think most White Sox fans wish they were still drunk following
- 19:33that losing streak that is actually no longer White Sox
- 19:37officially snapped it at 21 games.
- 19:40They said we're of legal drinking age and we're not going
- 19:43a year. We're not we're not going a
- 19:44single digit higher. We're going to cut it at 21.
- 19:48They finished one short of the AL record.
- 19:51And I want to say, what did we say last episode?
- 19:54What was the IT was the Phillies I.
- 20:00Don't know. 23 back in 61. So yeah, the streak is
- 20:06officially over. So if you combine, I know, I
- 20:10know Frank Thomas alluded to this on the broadcast.
- 20:13We kind of shed some light on it.
- 20:16Frank Thomas knows about the time zones for.
- 20:19Sure, but if you combine those two losing streaks, they had a
- 20:2214 game losing streak earlier the season and then a 21.
- 20:27So combined that would be 35 games worth of just horrendous
- 20:34losing streaks. Did you by chance see who who
- 20:38they had to thank for getting them on the board and who
- 20:44actually has been swinging a rather hot bat as of late?
- 20:48Oh no, I thought you were going to a different direction.
- 20:50What are you talking about? Andrew Benintendi, who at one
- 20:54point in the season was on pace to be just have the worst season
- 20:58of all time. He.
- 20:59Still might be, but has he obviously listened to the last
- 21:02episode? I don't.
- 21:02I don't know though. Let's let's pull it up here real
- 21:05quick, because he he actually went deep.
- 21:08I. Think it's by.
- 21:09I think it's by war. I think that was the stat.
- 21:11That he used yeah, but I mean, you have to more stupid, yeah,
- 21:14but you also have to. Imagine I said it.
- 21:16I said it. I'm just getting that out there.
- 21:18You've made that clear. You also have to imagine, like
- 21:20there's some counting stats there too, that that are
- 21:22affected by this. Look, his last four games, three
- 21:28home runs. Obviously a Hall of Famer, he's
- 21:35on track, OK? Well, I mean there's really no
- 21:37sense in in taking UN unnecessary shots and the guys
- 21:42clearly. Haven't.
- 21:43I think he's earned. He's going through it.
- 21:45No, he's going through it this year.
- 21:47The guy has to play for the White Sox.
- 21:49I know I get that. I was going to say I thought you
- 21:52were going the other direction. Our guy friend of the pod, Ross
- 21:55Stripling, was the one that gave this one up.
- 21:59Also, another friend of the pod, Jessica Kleinschmidt, said that
- 22:04the A's thought it would be a good idea to play 22 by Taylor
- 22:08Swift throughout the stadium before the game.
- 22:11Did you see that feeling 22? And sure enough, you know, throw
- 22:21in the throw in the meme that the White Sox took offense to
- 22:23that. I'll be honest, I didn't have
- 22:25much confidence in the A's being able.
- 22:27To I know I wish this lined up. I wish this lined up
- 22:30differently, but we still have time, you know, Maybe they can
- 22:32go on another run. Yeah, but we we lost the chance
- 22:37at firework night. If they were going to break the
- 22:41what was it the modern, the all time modern or the modern era
- 22:45record, which I was previously 26, they were going to their
- 22:4927th loss would have been what, against the Cubs or something?
- 22:55Would that have been next week? Why is it firework night it?
- 23:00Had been I don't know, it was just it was a Friday night.
- 23:04They're they're playing the Cubs.
- 23:06We talked about this, didn't we? I.
- 23:08Don't think so. Who's firework night?
- 23:12At Guaranteed Rate field if they would if they would have set the
- 23:16all time record at 27. It would have been on firework.
- 23:20It would have been on firework night and they would have had a
- 23:23nice celebration of it and I'm a little, I'm a little
- 23:25disappointed we missed out on that.
- 23:26Sometimes you really want things in sports.
- 23:32It's OK to be disappointed. I'm pretty bummed about that.
- 23:38That would have been excellent. That would have been really
- 23:42good. Or was it in Chicago?
- 23:45Hold on. Well, you know what I mean.
- 23:47Think OK, Wrigley. Yeah.
- 23:52Wasn't it Wrigley? I didn't hear this.
- 23:57I didn't see any of this, just questioning why there's random
- 24:01firework night when we had 4th of July a month ago.
- 24:09Now how does that how does that make sense?
- 24:11Sorry, I'm oh, oh, OK. No, no, no.
- 24:16I don't know where I got 27 from 2023 the Phillies.
- 24:20Wasn't that close. The the modern day MLB record
- 24:24was 23. Damn it one.
- 24:27Job so I because I was trying to figure out the math I'm like,
- 24:29are we talking about like two Fridays from now?
- 24:31No, it would have been this Friday and it would have been at
- 24:35home and we we missed out on it. But but do not worry though.
- 24:41Despite the win, the White Sox are still, as you would imagine,
- 24:46at the absolute bottom coming into coming into action today,
- 24:52Wednesday. They're 41 games out in the
- 24:56Central and there are 26 1/2 games back behind the Tigers,
- 25:01who are the next worst team in the division.
- 25:05Maybe just move them to Tennessee?
- 25:08No, Tennessee deserves way better than the White Sox and I,
- 25:12I will stand on that. They're they're negative again.
- 25:17Coming into Wednesday, their -241 run differential is 70 runs
- 25:22worse than the next worst team in baseball, a Rockies run
- 25:29differential of one -177. Yeah, it's a tough look.
- 25:38What about the what about the winning percentage, you ask?
- 25:41I'm glad you asked. I did bring that up the. 1916
- 25:45Philadelphia Athletics at 37 and 117 had a winning percentage of
- 25:50235 and are the worst team in ML BS modern era in terms of
- 25:55winning percentage. Right now the Phillies or with
- 25:58the win, I should say, coming into play on Wednesday, they
- 26:02improved to and they they lost to closeout the series against
- 26:07Oakland, but this is coming into Wednesday improved to 28 and 88.
- 26:12So they're at 2:41 or they were at 2:41.
- 26:16So we're on win, we're on win percentage watch here.
- 26:19Why don't? Why don't we have like the the
- 26:21the like E for eliminated on standings?
- 26:27Yeah. When is that going?
- 26:28To happen, it's very possible. I mean, it's very possible that
- 26:31that doesn't even kick in. Like even if it's even if it's
- 26:34accurate, the system's like there's there's no way a team
- 26:36could could be eliminated this early in the season.
- 26:39So we're just going to we're going to I.
- 26:41Think the guy that like probably presses that button is just like
- 26:45on vacation still, you know, probably he's like, I don't even
- 26:48get back until September. Right.
- 26:50And I'll, I'll, I'll take a look at it the start of September and
- 26:55Buddy is in for a rude awakening.
- 26:57Yeah, he's because you got a lot.
- 26:59You would you would imagine that a guy like that's probably on
- 27:02vacation at a place where he's not getting cell service.
- 27:07So he's he has no idea what's happening in Chicago.
- 27:12I get the run differential thing, but I'm looking now,
- 27:20there's no other team that has scored less than 400 runs and
- 27:33they're at 360. Yeah, that's insane.
- 27:39But they haven't scored 400 runs yet.
- 27:41Oh, with the win, with the loss today, they dropped to 239 in
- 27:47the win percentage column. So we're we're four percentage
- 27:50points away for making this dream a reality or five if you
- 27:56if you want sole possession of first or last, I guess you could
- 28:00say. I need this.
- 28:01I need it. This is like what a a couple
- 28:04years ago when we're on 70 win watch for the Padres.
- 28:08This is this is a little this is far different, but we're going
- 28:12to be keeping an eye on this some stretch because we could be
- 28:14looking at quite literally the worst baseball team of all time.
- 28:22Damn. I mean, what did what did we do
- 28:23to deserve this? This is a gift.
- 28:25Like you don't get to see. I mean, good or bad, you don't
- 28:27you don't get to see things like this very often.
- 28:30And here we are. History, you know.
- 28:33Just soak it in. Soak in that history.
- 28:36I mean, what, the Earth is like 3 1/2 billion years old and we
- 28:39just happen to be on the planet? What the same?
- 28:42Time The White Sox were the worst team in baseball ever.
- 28:46Crazy. I always forget the manager's
- 28:48last name. Pedro what?
- 28:50Grifall. Because, I mean, this is this
- 28:56his last job in baseball? I don't know.
- 29:00I mean, we, we mentioned it last episode because they were
- 29:02talking Ozzy Guillen was talking about on the broadcast.
- 29:04He's 100 games under as manager. I mean that what are we doing?
- 29:10Yeah, what? I literally do anything else.
- 29:15I I get it, there's no sense in firing a guy like this when this
- 29:18is just going to be what the rest of the year is going to be.
- 29:20But like. Yeah, I mean, now there's no
- 29:24point in firing him now. I yeah, I get it.
- 29:28But I. Why didn't this happen in like
- 29:31May? They didn't know they're going
- 29:34to be this bad in May? I don't know.
- 29:39Yeah, that's it's just a bad taste in my mouth.
- 29:46Speaking of bad taste in your mouth, I'm sure Framer Valdez
- 29:50has a bad taste in his after losing his no hitter in the
- 29:53ninth via a Corey Seeger two run Homer, right?
- 29:59I believe you walked. Is that Josh?
- 30:02Before? Yeah.
- 30:03Before where you. You were watching this game,
- 30:05weren't you? Because I saw you text you.
- 30:07Popped it on in the 9th to right on time.
- 30:10Watch that walk and then no, I watched, I think it was walk,
- 30:17double play, walk, Seeger, home run.
- 30:24That sounds right. I think that was the order.
- 30:26This was weirdly one of those, one of the very rare few times
- 30:32that I I was unaware that this was happening because usually
- 30:35like I'll. I'll be this didn't hit till he
- 30:37through 8. I know I, I usually get an
- 30:40update or like a, a notification.
- 30:43I get, I see the the little like no hitter flag on MLBTV when
- 30:49they put it like below the score or I don't know, somebody's
- 30:54texting about it. I see it on Twitter.
- 30:55I saw nothing. And so I, I, I have people like
- 31:00messaging me and text me the, the link to the Seager home run
- 31:03and like, Oh, this sucks. And I'm like, why, Why are we
- 31:05hating on Corey Seeger? Finally come to find out that he
- 31:09he broke up the no hitter with two outs in the night.
- 31:11So tough for Framber and it was almost on the one year
- 31:15anniversary of his no hitter last year.
- 31:17That was pretty crazy. That was the the August 1st last
- 31:20year I believe. Saw that.
- 31:22I think I saw that. Seger also broke up a no hitter
- 31:27with two outs in the ninth. Little trivia, Do you know whose
- 31:29it was back in 2016? Second time he's done it in his
- 31:37career. You're not going to get it.
- 31:42No, it's a random name. Very well, I guess it depends on
- 31:47who you ask, but to the average, the average fan, pretty random.
- 31:51Matt Moore back in 2016. Franber Valdez, though, this is
- 32:02just what the Astros have needed.
- 32:04His last five appearances dating back to July 10th.
- 32:08He's four and O with an ERA at a clip of 241.
- 32:14Yeah. With 41 strikeouts over that
- 32:16span. Everyone's dogging on that
- 32:17Kikuchi trade, including us, and then next thing you know he
- 32:20turns into freaking candy Koufax.
- 32:23Yeah, Can we? Can we?
- 32:25I I was tweeting at the Astros after they put up the final
- 32:28score graphic. I said the Astros need to be
- 32:30investigated for bamboozling the rest of the league for this
- 32:34acquisition because they clearly knew something that we didn't.
- 32:37Yeah, man, this was just, I mean, he's, he's a depth piece.
- 32:44I mean the last the last two outings respectively.
- 32:48His His first outing with the Astros was against the Rays.
- 32:51Put up 11 KS over 5 2/3. Only allowed three hits, two
- 32:55earned runs today Goes 5 and a third against the Rangers on the
- 33:01road. 2 earned runs, four hits and eight KS. 19 strikeouts over
- 33:08his last two starts with the Astros.
- 33:10There's only two starts with the Astros.
- 33:11Yeah, I don't get that. No Habla.
- 33:16I mean, what could the explanation of that even be?
- 33:18Like where do where would you even start begin to start trying
- 33:22to explain like how it doesn't make any sense change of
- 33:26scenery. That seems like a, that's a,
- 33:29that's a fall back, I feel like a lot of times, but how do you,
- 33:32how do you go from being just garbage to doing what he's doing
- 33:37now? And I I understand it's two
- 33:39starts but. Are they?
- 33:41Were they both in Houston? No, the one today was on the
- 33:44road in Texas or in. Yeah, I got.
- 33:49You freaking words. Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington.
- 33:55Ballpark in Arlington, Hawaii, Choctaw Stadium, Globe Life
- 34:00Field. It's all the same thing.
- 34:04Pretty nuts, man, pretty nuts. But whatever he's got going on
- 34:08is is wild. I still think that was a stupid
- 34:10trade in the end, the amount of talent they gave up, but.
- 34:15I mean, would you give that up for Sandy Koufax?
- 34:17That's. A good point.
- 34:19That's a good point. When you put it like that, you
- 34:21know you, you say Koufax, you say Sandy, I say Koufax.
- 34:31Wow. Yeah, no, look, dude, like we
- 34:36talked about, I don't know why anyone's surprised like that.
- 34:42Just pay attention to the back of a baseball card and you
- 34:45understand that, Like this rotation in this team, it was
- 34:48coming and they're coming down the stretch, hot as ever.
- 34:54So if you're the Mariners, you got to be sweating bullets.
- 34:59No, for sure. And the Astros, we've we've
- 35:01touched on that already and that's, I mean, we, we've talked
- 35:05about it. We you could see that coming a
- 35:07mile away. That's not the surprising
- 35:09element it to me. I'm talking like specifically
- 35:12you say like it just doesn't, it just doesn't make sense.
- 35:16And if it continues at this rate, if he maintains this, I'm
- 35:18like, OK, well then what was going on in Toronto then?
- 35:22But yeah, the Astros thing as a whole, the direction they're
- 35:25headed, the the momentum they've been playing with doesn't
- 35:28surprise me in the least. Go ahead and chalk that up as a
- 35:32division win for them this year, division title speaking.
- 35:39I actually laughed when it happened by the way.
- 35:41So good for Corey. I like Corey Seeger minus the
- 35:45Adidas brands. That's a rough look, yeah.
- 35:50That ain't the move. Not the move.
- 35:53Sucker, so care. This is soccer, I was going to
- 36:02say, Speaking of divisions. Speaking of not the move, I
- 36:06don't know where you're going with this.
- 36:07Let's talk about the American League East here real quick.
- 36:10Some another brutal blow for the Orioles rotation.
- 36:15Grayson Rodriguez was announced today.
- 36:17He's headed to the IL with what they're calling LAT.
- 36:26Terrorist discomfort. Very good.
- 36:35And that was the last second start, Last second scratch,
- 36:38wasn't it? It was like 30 minutes for game
- 36:40time. I I like minutes.
- 36:43Yeah, it was minutes and they showed the video.
- 36:46I don't know if it was from like the center field.
- 36:47Camera. Oh, that's right.
- 36:48He's, he's like, I don't feel right.
- 36:50Yeah, he's like I yeah, he's like, I don't, I'm not not
- 36:53feeling good, dude. So people were speculating when
- 36:56it first happened because you know, with the whole a lot of
- 36:59what I saw was these people that were like betting on the game
- 37:02and they're like, yo, this was like last minute.
- 37:04It screwed up my whatever screwed up my parlay.
- 37:07I don't know how that stuff works last minute.
- 37:09I don't know if it like voids it or if it like how that.
- 37:13That depends how that works. DraftKings typically gives your
- 37:15money back. But that's a lot of what I saw.
- 37:19But the the non degenerates that we're talking about the the the
- 37:23news, they were like, is he sick?
- 37:25Is he I'll because it's something so last minute.
- 37:29You got to think like, oh, maybe he's dehydrated.
- 37:31Maybe he's maybe came down with something because usually.
- 37:35Yeah. If if you're not feeling right,
- 37:37a lot of times that's like a wake up in the morning and like
- 37:40my back is locked up or something of that effect.
- 37:43But like he Chipotle from last night, not the move.
- 37:47He went through his whole pregame routine, got to the end
- 37:50minutes before the game was like yeah I'm I'm out.
- 37:53So he'll be on the 15 day IL retroactive to the 4th.
- 38:01Orioles fans are going through it, man, going through it.
- 38:05They're in a weird. They're, I think if you're
- 38:12everyone else in baseball, if you're a fan of any other team
- 38:16and you're just like on the outside looking in, you're like
- 38:20the Orioles are fine. Like, imagine complaining about
- 38:23all this and you're still right there in contention as one of
- 38:25the best teams in baseball. Imagine complaining about this
- 38:28and this is your roster, but if you kind of take a little bit of
- 38:35a deeper dive, dude, like no, no, no, for sure there's some
- 38:37trouble there. For sure.
- 38:38But isn't that, isn't there some validity to that argument too?
- 38:41Like the people on the outside going, OK, yeah, you're beat up,
- 38:44but you're not like, I mean, you're you're 20 games over 500
- 38:48still. So like, how much do you really
- 38:51expect us to feel bad for you? I'm sure, I'm sure Braves fans
- 38:55are looking at this going. I don't think anyone cry me a
- 38:58river. Bad.
- 38:59I don't think anyone feels bad. I just, I think there's some
- 39:02things that Orioles fans are witnessing and it's probably
- 39:05similar to like us Yankee fans where we're just like, I can see
- 39:12the underbelly, I can see the Achilles heel.
- 39:17It wasn't addressed at the deadline.
- 39:21You can still sneak out wins, but I still feel like there's
- 39:24issues there that are going to be exposed.
- 39:28And I think Orioles fans are starting to say the same thing
- 39:31about their own team. And oddly enough, there's a
- 39:35combination of injuries and it's also some bonehead moves by
- 39:39managers. There's a lot of correlations.
- 39:45A manager. They have one manager that's
- 39:47singular. I'm saying the Yankees managers
- 39:51and Orioles managers, yeah, yeah, yeah, I see, You know, are
- 39:56are one in the same as far as questionable decisions.
- 40:00I I sure understand and they, all the Orioles fans are getting
- 40:03this weird false hope that they're getting Felix Bautista
- 40:06back. Have you seen that he's?
- 40:07I saw that bullpen that he was throwing.
- 40:10So I don't know. I, I, I don't know what
- 40:11timetable that that's looking like, if there even is one that
- 40:15I, I don't see that happening. But I, I would get it if you
- 40:19have to deal with the roller coaster that is Craig Kimbrel, I
- 40:22would be latching on to everything, every single thing.
- 40:27That would give me a sliver of hope that you don't have to deal
- 40:29with that anymore. I, so I understand.
- 40:31I understand, even if it's irrational, unrealistic, I get
- 40:35it. Yeah, the other.
- 40:38Either way, they're very emotional bunch.
- 40:42I mean, we're all we all are at times, Every, everything.
- 40:45For coming out of the woodwork and saying, you know, all the
- 40:48things they said for the first few months, there's, it's all.
- 40:52It's just interesting the way they're acting now.
- 40:58Just saying. I understand, I understand.
- 41:02Get off my Twitter feed by the way.
- 41:03Like relax. Everything I see it's like.
- 41:06Orioles fans, you have You have our good Fred Ryan Ripken to
- 41:10thank for that. Goodness, bro.
- 41:15Speaking of feed, I'm seeing in the comments that I got some
- 41:18some family watching from down in North Carolina.
- 41:20So down in North Carolina. Hello to the family down in
- 41:25North Carolina. Appreciate you tuning in.
- 41:28What else we got on? Here I thought you were going
- 41:30the other feed when we said like horse feed or like cattle feed,
- 41:35you know, I wasn't sure if you had something there.
- 41:38Nope, really little to no reason to talk about horse or cattle
- 41:42feed, you know. We're coming a lot today, a lot
- 41:45of times. You're right, we are bouncing
- 41:47around a lot. Is Hawaii a state crazy?
- 41:52Go to school, kids, stay there. Just to clarify for maybe some
- 41:56folks that are just now joining the the live stream, that was
- 41:59not my question of whether Hawaii was a state.
- 42:04You'll have to go back to the beginning of the episode and and
- 42:06figure out why we were talking about that.
- 42:08But Speaking of bouncing around, it's time for some say the same
- 42:13player. Yeah, I really liked your idea
- 42:17last episode of establishing a Hall of Fame for the answers
- 42:22that we get correct. So as it stands right now, the
- 42:24names that we have gotten correct in order.
- 42:29Justin Morneau It's a three person Hall of Fame has its
- 42:33hands right now, assuming I didn't miss anybody.
- 42:36Justin Morneau, Roberto Clemente and last episode.
- 42:42Finally getting in, Mr. Bonds. Barry Bonds finally gets into
- 42:46the hall. If only you were wearing that
- 42:48ASU hat last time. That's true.
- 42:51That's true. Probably not the Hall of Fame he
- 42:53wants to be in, but I would argue it's an even greater honor
- 42:57than even the Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 42:59If it's a big deal. If we're being honest.
- 43:03So let's let's see if we can add a fourth member, shall we?
- 43:06OK, no name, no repeated names to start off.
- 43:10Cannot mention a name that has been which we haven't really
- 43:15gone crazy, you know. You say Kikuchi.
- 43:19We've thrown some names out there.
- 43:20Rafael for call was dropped early.
- 43:22That's. So you can't can't, can't start
- 43:25with Rafael for call. Love that that's a throwback
- 43:27name. All right, so let me let me
- 43:32establish and let me pick a name here.
- 43:34You were going to say something. You said so.
- 43:40No, I was just wasn't sure if you had something in mind, you
- 43:48know something all. Right, I got a.
- 43:51Name relevant in mind. Oh, you get mad when I do that,
- 43:55so I won't do that. Yeah, well, let's not be laying
- 43:59down clues for me to pick up on this isn't?
- 44:01No, you get mad when I start with a retired player, so I
- 44:04won't do that. It it just doesn't make any
- 44:07sense. Like start here and now start
- 44:11with whoever you want. But I just think it's easier if
- 44:14we if we kind of least start on the same page in that regard,
- 44:17But you just start with whoever you want.
- 44:20Maybe I'll switch it up. Maybe I'll go retired player
- 44:23throw you all to send a little bit.
- 44:27Makes me want to not listen to you.
- 44:32Pick a name and let's ride. All right.
- 44:35Ready 3/2 one Raphael Devers. I was trying to, I was trying to
- 44:46listen to you while I was saying it.
- 44:47Dansby Dansby Swanson. Dansby Swanson.
- 44:50There we go. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:51Dansby Swanson and Raphael Devers.
- 44:53All right. I was it when I heard Devers, it
- 44:56kind of went into the to the Swanson pronunciation
- 45:00pronunciation pronouncing Dansby Devson words.
- 45:06So we've got Raphael for a call, and no, I'm just kidding.
- 45:13So Devers and Dansby. Devers and Dansby.
- 45:18So the groundwork has been laid. We're we're underway now.
- 45:22Devers and Dansby. Also, I suggested last episode
- 45:26we limit ourselves to five, but I think we can stick with 10 as
- 45:29long as we don't linger. We don't linger.
- 45:32Play the song. Play the song.
- 45:33I don't like playing the song, it stresses me out.
- 45:37Mom, you know. I mean, I can if you want me to.
- 45:44I've already moved on in my brain so.
- 45:47What do we want the song or not? Well, you do you.
- 45:51I'm just over here calculating my names.
- 45:54I'll play the song, count us down.
- 45:56And if it stresses me out, I'm, I'm, I'm turning it off.
- 45:59I'm not even going to let it finish.
- 46:02All right. Dansby Swanson.
- 46:04Rafael Devers. So you can play some.
- 46:13I moved on in my head. I'm aware, I could tell.
- 46:17All right, Dansby Swanson, Raphael Devers.
- 46:30All right, I got a guy. Let me just get there.
- 46:34Hold on. Yeah, got a guy.
- 46:48Why? I just.
- 46:50I just got a guy. Oh, oh, no, I got it.
- 46:53I got a new guy. I got a new guy.
- 46:57This guy's. Way better.
- 46:57It just hits like that. Yeah, it it hits just like that.
- 47:05I have no clue. Well, you got to come up with
- 47:15somebody. OK.
- 47:18Do you have a name? Sure.
- 47:21All right, 321. Jason David Ross.
- 47:29That's a great name. Good job.
- 47:31I was, I was trying to go through the archives to to get
- 47:35there. Jason Hayward, Literal little to
- 47:38nothing. Nothing.
- 47:39That's why I ran. That's why.
- 47:41Yeah, that's why. Yeah, that's fair, though.
- 47:42That's fair though. All right.
- 47:43So David Ross, Jason Hayward. David Ross and Jason Hayward.
- 48:06Let's roll. You got a guy?
- 48:08Yeah, sure. I feel, I feel good about this.
- 48:15I think we're going to be fairly zeroed in fairly quickly.
- 48:21This name came to mind and just As for the sake of not spending
- 48:25more time thinking about another name, I'm just going to go with
- 48:27it. But I probably could have come
- 48:28up with something better, but I'm just.
- 48:29Me too. Me too.
- 48:30That was my that was. Yeah, same.
- 48:33All right, that three there. There's our 3rd guest, 3/2 one
- 48:41William Contreras. All right, we're.
- 48:44We're doing something here. You.
- 48:45Know what I mean? We're yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:47Yep. Yep, Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 48:49We're zeroing in. OK, Fourth guess.
- 48:52William Contreras and Anthony Rizzo.
- 49:02All right, I got a guy. All right, I got a guy.
- 49:04Fourth guy. OK.
- 49:07Fourth Guess 321 Chris Bryant, let's go.
- 49:19I told you that was has that any record?
- 49:23Fourth guess. 4th That's got to be close.
- 49:25I think the the one before that was maybe 6.
- 49:28See, this is the problem with not going retired guys.
- 49:37You know what I mean? Like I know we had retired guys
- 49:41mixed in, but starting it's just like it very, it just starts
- 49:45very close, just starts very narrow.
- 49:47You're saying it gives us too much of an advantage, right?
- 49:50OK, that's fair. One could argue that we have to
- 49:53start with one retired, one active.
- 49:55That's fine, that's fair. And we decide that you pick one,
- 49:59I pick one before we go for the first name.
- 50:01Well. I'm looking at this through the
- 50:03lens of the Hall of Fame, this Hall of Fame that we've
- 50:05established. And you could, you could really
- 50:07draw parallels here to like the way the rules have it have
- 50:11evolved in baseball, where it's like, well, now we're
- 50:14grandfathering guys in here that were brought in via different
- 50:19rules and requirements. And now moving forward, if we're
- 50:24going to if we're going to change the, the, the
- 50:26requirements up and the way we go about this game. 11 could
- 50:33argue I could bounce. Chris Bryant, I could bounce.
- 50:36One could argue that the other names took a It was a more
- 50:41difficult path to get there. They earned their spot in the
- 50:43Hall of Fame. Well.
- 50:46This one was a. No, like we talked about though,
- 50:48if you're you could be unanimous or make it in by the skinnier
- 50:53teeth on the last year of the ballot, but you're a whole, a
- 50:55Hall of Famer is a Hall of Famer.
- 50:57So we have to respect the Hall. Well, I like the new rule, if
- 51:01we're willing to move forward with.
- 51:02That that's fine. We'll just have to.
- 51:03Grandfather, take it to the committee.
- 51:05Take it to the committee. We'll.
- 51:07Have to grandfather Chris Bryan in.
- 51:08It's fine. Some very questionable
- 51:10selections, if if we're being honest, our last two, Barry
- 51:13Bonds and Chris Bryant making it into the hall.
- 51:16You know. But this is our whole, this is
- 51:20our game, this is our game. These are our rules, these are
- 51:24our guys. All right, we got to get you out
- 51:26of here in like 3 minutes. So go ahead and lead us off with
- 51:30your weekend series to watch. What do we got coming up this
- 51:33weekend? Oh boy, I've get at the time of
- 51:38this recording, the standings here.
- 51:46The Minnesota Twins are 3 1/2 games back from the Cleveland
- 51:48Guardians at the moment, so I'm going to take them matching up
- 51:52for a four-game set this weekend that starts Manana with a
- 52:00doubleheader. I believe Alex Cobb is making
- 52:04his debut with the Guardians first game, right, because he
- 52:09said he was doing a little rehab stint.
- 52:13So Alex Cobb going against Bailey over game Juan.
- 52:18That's a make up game from two days ago.
- 52:20I guess I don't know that's what it says.
- 52:22Don't listen to me yesterday. I don't know what day it is game
- 52:27two. Gotcha.
- 52:29It's an Apple TV game. I don't know who The Who The Who
- 52:34the pitchers will be, so just TuneIn.
- 52:37Anyway, game three Saturday. This is all in Minnesota, by the
- 52:41way, Gavin Williams going against Simeon Woods Richardson
- 52:47and then game four on Sunday, undecided for Cleveland and
- 52:55something D festa for the Minnesota Twins, Mr. Fiesta
- 53:03Festa. So in all seriousness, though,
- 53:07like this is this is something, you know what I mean?
- 53:10Can the Twins narrow the gap if the Guardians walk away with
- 53:15them? It's a four-game set.
- 53:16Like there's enough to do some damage here.
- 53:18If one of these teams takes three out of four and wins this
- 53:21series, it's changes a lot. So yeah, good series to watch.
- 53:27And we still got decent amount of amount of ball left to play,
- 53:30but we're late enough in the season to where if the Guardians
- 53:33do some damage this weekend. That's like if they sweep you're
- 53:37talking 6-7 game gap like that's.
- 53:42Good luck. Good luck.
- 53:45All right, for me, speed round here.
- 53:49You are going to want to tune into this series if you are a
- 53:53fan of pitching the Pirates at the Dodgers game one on Friday.
- 53:56We've got Mitch Keller going up against Jack Flaherty.
- 54:01Great. That game is at 10:10 PM Eastern
- 54:04on Friday. Game two, we got Paul Skeens
- 54:07going up against River Ryan. That's at 9:10 PM Eastern on
- 54:14Saturday and Game 3, the finale on Sunday, we've got Bailey
- 54:20Falter versus Tyler Glass. Now that's a 4:10 PM Eastern
- 54:23game. That's some good.
- 54:26Ball right there. This is some good pitching if
- 54:28you like that kind of thing. So you're into that?
- 54:31I mean, the fact that we're highlighting the Pirates post
- 54:34All Star Break, I think that's. A big deal just speaks.
- 54:37To where they're at this year. Shut up.
- 54:40Shut up, pirates. All right, well, we got to get
- 54:44you out of here. And we finish.
- 54:45Exactly at 8:00 on the dots. So let's let's let's have a
- 54:52let's have a good rest of your week.
- 54:53Let's have a good weekend and we'll see you guys on Sunday.
- 54:56Do the Dang thing. Don't go chasing curveballs.
- 54:59Love you all, and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 55:01baseball with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
