- 0:06Speaker 1: to an NFL draft posted by the writers of Patriots
- 0:09Speaker 1: dot Com. From now until you hear the New England
- 0:12Speaker 1: Patriots slife.
- 0:13Speaker 2: The countdown is on.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Welcome everybody.
- 0:21Speaker 4: This is Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Easy to drink, easy to enjoy, bud Light.
- 0:26Speaker 4: The official fear sponsor of the New England Patriots. And
- 0:28Speaker 4: we're excited here to be back in studio for another
- 0:31Speaker 4: episode of Patriots Draft Countdown. Guys, we had free agency,
- 0:34Speaker 4: a lot of moves made by the Patriots, specifically on
- 0:36Speaker 4: the defensive side of the ball, and what we just
- 0:38Speaker 4: want to discuss here is how's it gonna affect their
- 0:40Speaker 4: draft plans? Paul, they were heavy on the defensive side
- 0:42Speaker 4: of the ball. What are your takeaways and how they
- 0:44Speaker 4: might affect the draft.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Yeah, starting to hear a lot of people being let's say, worried,
- 0:49Speaker 5: might be an understatement about neglecting the offense. I have
- 0:52Speaker 5: to think that they're going to lean a little bit
- 0:54Speaker 5: more heavily on that side of the ball come draft time. Now,
- 0:57Speaker 5: the problem with that is that's great in theory, but
- 1:00Speaker 5: how does it work out in practice?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Who's available?
- 1:02Speaker 5: You need a left tackle, you need more than just
- 1:04Speaker 5: a left tackle up front, you need a wide receiver.
- 1:07Speaker 5: Will those spots be worthy of taking someone at number
- 1:11Speaker 5: four with those positions? I should say that time will tell,
- 1:15Speaker 5: but I have to think they're going to weigh heavily
- 1:17Speaker 5: on offense.
- 1:18Speaker 6: Mike Evan, you.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Put out another mock draft this week. How did the
- 1:20Speaker 4: free agency affect your thoughts.
- 1:22Speaker 2: That went into this Monck draft?
- 1:23Speaker 7: Yeah, offense. Offense was the first two picks. I mean,
- 1:25Speaker 7: I took Campbell and Jayden Higgins from ioways stay with
- 1:28Speaker 7: my first two picks. But I think that's really what
- 1:30Speaker 7: it came down to when I did that mock drafts
- 1:32Speaker 7: order of operations, like at which position do you want
- 1:34Speaker 7: to address first? Obviously it's going to depend on which
- 1:37Speaker 7: player you have great at higher you know, is it
- 1:39Speaker 7: Ted McMillan, and then a tackle, is it Campbell?
- 1:41Speaker 2: And then a receiver.
- 1:43Speaker 7: I think that's the direction that we're headed in. But
- 1:45Speaker 7: it's just a matter of, you know, finding the value
- 1:48Speaker 7: of where it hit those spots. You mentioned that they
- 1:50Speaker 7: need more than just tackle. Do you think one of
- 1:52Speaker 7: the benefits of this draft is a very good guard class,
- 1:55Speaker 7: a very deep You could probably find a third or
- 1:57Speaker 7: fourth round starters at guard in particular, especially with all
- 2:01Speaker 7: the tackles that could be guards from college to the pros.
- 2:04Speaker 7: So I feel pretty good about them finding another guard
- 2:07Speaker 7: that can compete at left guard, maybe even somebody that
- 2:10Speaker 7: can flex the center as well. It's gonna be those
- 2:12Speaker 7: two positions though, and just what order do you go
- 2:15Speaker 7: in and how do you find that best value there?
- 2:17Speaker 4: Yeah, let's took out to you matismos from this last
- 2:19Speaker 4: week of free agency.
- 2:20Speaker 6: I mean, the defense is all you want to say,
- 2:23Speaker 6: taken care of now, but we still have questions at receiver.
- 2:25Speaker 6: The O line has some questions. I think some Patriots
- 2:28Speaker 6: fans were a little upset that there are some trades
- 2:30Speaker 6: made around the league, and I think the Patriots maybe
- 2:31Speaker 6: could have got involved in that. But I mean, now
- 2:33Speaker 6: it's April. See what happens at receiver.
- 2:36Speaker 4: So coming up later in the show, Matisa and Chris
- 2:38Speaker 4: Cassidy satdown broke down some of the mock drafts. How
- 2:40Speaker 4: teams are you know other I guess pundits around the
- 2:43Speaker 4: league view what the Patriots are gonna do. But guys,
- 2:45Speaker 4: it seems like we're always kind of coming back to
- 2:47Speaker 4: the same names up there at fourth.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Overall.
- 2:50Speaker 4: For me, though, it seems like a no brainer if
- 2:52Speaker 4: Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter is there. And I know
- 2:54Speaker 4: we've been saying this for months now, but if those
- 2:56Speaker 4: two guys are there, Paul is, are those the slam
- 2:59Speaker 4: dunk guys? Is that the best case scenario one of
- 3:01Speaker 4: those two.
- 3:01Speaker 3: They would be.
- 3:02Speaker 5: For me, I absolutely would jump all over Travis Hunter
- 3:05Speaker 5: if he were to slip to four. Mike, I'm a
- 3:07Speaker 5: little bit more interested in what you might do if
- 3:10Speaker 5: those two guys were to not be on the board
- 3:13Speaker 5: at number four.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Well, that's the hard decision, and I put out a
- 3:15Speaker 4: mock traft last week that we'll get into it.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm sure Matisa and.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Chris are going to tear it apart, but you know,
- 3:20Speaker 4: just making a case or at least bringing up the
- 3:22Speaker 4: discussion for you know, player like Ashtrion genty in. Look,
- 3:25Speaker 4: I understand running back, it's a devalue position a little
- 3:28Speaker 4: bit this year, and the Patriots have a lot of needs.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Though, it's just standing out.
- 3:31Speaker 4: In my eye that the Patriots were a terrible run
- 3:33Speaker 4: team last year, and that might be a way to
- 3:35Speaker 4: support Drake May.
- 3:36Speaker 2: But I think there are a.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Lot of, you know, different options. We've talked about Daniel
- 3:39Speaker 4: Jeremiah his view of this draft going from ten to
- 3:42Speaker 4: thirty even not a lot of change. So it really
- 3:45Speaker 4: puts I think, have pressure on the scouting staff to
- 3:48Speaker 4: get it right. We don't want to be looking back
- 3:50Speaker 4: five years from now and saying, man, we had the
- 3:53Speaker 4: stud staring at us in the face at fourth overall
- 3:55Speaker 4: and we were trying to fill a need, or we
- 3:56Speaker 4: went away from our board and we tried to make
- 3:58Speaker 4: something work. I think they just have to nail this
- 4:00Speaker 4: pick and get a talented player.
- 4:02Speaker 7: Yeah, there's always a chance that that happens in any draft,
- 4:05Speaker 7: that somebody slips through the cracks or falls a little
- 4:07Speaker 7: bit that ends up being, you know, a great generational player.
- 4:10Speaker 7: But I think in a draft like this, fit is
- 4:12Speaker 7: going to be a big part of it, whether that's
- 4:14Speaker 7: positional needs or just to fit in your system and
- 4:18Speaker 7: in your program. And I think for a guy like
- 4:21Speaker 7: Mike Rabel that is going to hold some weight in
- 4:24Speaker 7: this draft because there's not a big talent gap between
- 4:27Speaker 7: the others, not Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter, but everybody else,
- 4:32Speaker 7: character and intangibles and fit in. How he's going to
- 4:37Speaker 7: help them, you know, and run this program and establish
- 4:40Speaker 7: this program might end up being as a big factor
- 4:43Speaker 7: in this decision because you might look at the board
- 4:45Speaker 7: and you might say, picks four through twelve, we kind
- 4:49Speaker 7: of have everybody graded similarly.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So what are going to be the deal breakers?
- 4:52Speaker 7: The position that they play, and if the staff likes
- 4:55Speaker 7: the guy or not, right like, those are going to
- 4:57Speaker 7: end up ultimately being the deal breakers. And that's why
- 5:00Speaker 7: when I hear just pick the best player available, I
- 5:03Speaker 7: don't know if that necessarily applies to a draft like this.
- 5:06Speaker 5: And that's an interesting factor that Evan brings up because
- 5:08Speaker 5: there are a lot of people that see this as
- 5:11Speaker 5: a very level draft in terms whatever number you want
- 5:14Speaker 5: to go down to. Is it four, is at five,
- 5:16Speaker 5: you know, ten to forty? Is it more like four
- 5:18Speaker 5: to forty. There's a lot of people that think there's
- 5:21Speaker 5: not a lot to choose from these different guys. So
- 5:23Speaker 5: the factors that Evan's talking about might make the difference
- 5:27Speaker 5: as to where you lean and Mike, I think you
- 5:28Speaker 5: made a really good point about the draft in general,
- 5:31Speaker 5: and it's true every year you have to make sure
- 5:33Speaker 5: you hit on the picks so you can do what
- 5:35Speaker 5: Evan said in say Campbell and Hawkins with your first
- 5:38Speaker 5: two picks and say, well, we're addressing the offense.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Well, that's if.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Those two guys can play so and there's no guarantees
- 5:46Speaker 5: of that, and that's what makes it a little bit
- 5:48Speaker 5: more difficult. And I think the challenge this year is
- 5:50Speaker 5: finding difference making players regardless of position. That's why I
- 5:54Speaker 5: kind of lean on the best player available. But I
- 5:57Speaker 5: understand what Evan's talking about with fit and culture and
- 5:59Speaker 5: all those other things, because there's not a lot to
- 6:01Speaker 5: choose from between say Tep McMillan and Tyler Warren and
- 6:06Speaker 5: Ashton genty and and you know, Will Campbell this. You know,
- 6:09Speaker 5: there's something for everybody. It depends on what your preference
- 6:12Speaker 5: happens to be.
- 6:12Speaker 7: Yeah, like Tech McMillan, sorry Duce, but like Teed McMillan
- 6:15Speaker 7: is such a great example of the fit thing because
- 6:17Speaker 7: he would be the first receiver since Mike Evans in
- 6:20Speaker 7: twenty fourteen to go top fifteen that ran a four
- 6:23Speaker 7: or five plus in the forty yard dash. So when
- 6:25Speaker 7: you draft Tep McMillan, you have to have a plan
- 6:28Speaker 7: of how are we going to use Tep McMillan, How
- 6:30Speaker 7: does he fit into our offense?
- 6:32Speaker 2: And if Josh McDaniels says he's not really my.
- 6:34Speaker 7: Type of receiver, then you don't reach on a player
- 6:38Speaker 7: like that in a draft like this because of that.
- 6:40Speaker 2: So, like there's so many examples of that.
- 6:42Speaker 7: You know, Mason Graham, does he have too much overlap
- 6:44Speaker 7: with Milon Williams? Like is there going to be redundancy
- 6:47Speaker 7: there that now all of a sudden, there's value just
- 6:50Speaker 7: isn't as high to the Patriots.
- 6:51Speaker 2: So you have to be careful in this draft.
- 6:53Speaker 7: I think of, you know, what's the plan for this player,
- 6:55Speaker 7: what's the vision, where's the playing time for him? You know,
- 6:58Speaker 7: where is his role going to be in your offense
- 7:00Speaker 7: or your defense? Because if you can't make the player work,
- 7:03Speaker 7: then then you're in a really tough spot.
- 7:06Speaker 4: He's free agency isn't quite over yet though, and there
- 7:08Speaker 4: are still some players out there. Kim Robinson's a popular name,
- 7:11Speaker 4: you know, Amari Cooper, Stefan Diggs. The Patriots could still
- 7:16Speaker 4: make some additions. Do you feel like they still have
- 7:18Speaker 4: some holes to plug. With some of those veterans who
- 7:20Speaker 4: might cost you a little bit more money, you might
- 7:21Speaker 4: not quite get the return you want.
- 7:23Speaker 6: I think there are definitely some holes, but we've whiffed
- 7:25Speaker 6: on so many receivers. I think a guy like Stefan Diggs,
- 7:28Speaker 6: you faced him for the past three years in Buffalo,
- 7:30Speaker 6: you played him again last year with the Texans, like
- 7:32Speaker 6: I think bringing somebody in like that brings a lot
- 7:35Speaker 6: of value to the team. Similar with a Marii Cooper
- 7:37Speaker 6: and Mac Hollins kind of brings that in. But you
- 7:40Speaker 6: gotta hit nail head there.
- 7:42Speaker 4: All right, Well, that's gonna do it here at this
- 7:44Speaker 4: first segment. But we've got a jam Pack show. Hope
- 7:46Speaker 4: you'll stick around. We got Evan's got a film breakdown
- 7:48Speaker 4: coming up, and then later in the show we'll also
- 7:49Speaker 4: break down the quarterbacks in addition to Chris and Matis
- 7:52Speaker 4: breaking down the recent mock draft. So jam Pack Show,
- 7:55Speaker 4: check out Evan's film review here.
- 7:57Speaker 7: What's up, everybody, It's Evan Lazarre. Welcome into the Page
- 8:00Speaker 7: Treats Draft Countdown film Room. We're gonna talk about the
- 8:03Speaker 7: tight ends here today. My top five tight ends in
- 8:05Speaker 7: this draft. We're gonna break all these guys down individually
- 8:08Speaker 7: here in a second, But I want to start at
- 8:10Speaker 7: the top with Penn State's tight end Tyler Warren, top
- 8:14Speaker 7: ten projected pick in this class. We get to his
- 8:17Speaker 7: film here and show you why he's so highly coveted
- 8:20Speaker 7: here in this draft cycle. And I look at Tyler
- 8:23Speaker 7: Warren a couple different things that stand out about him
- 8:25Speaker 7: on film, the first one being we can play bully ball.
- 8:29Speaker 7: We can just be a man amongst boys. This is
- 8:31Speaker 7: gronk esque from him in the red zone. So we're
- 8:33Speaker 7: gonna just run the sem here out of the slot.
- 8:36Speaker 7: And as we roll this play, we're gonna get off
- 8:38Speaker 7: some physical coverage. We're gonna get up the seam, and
- 8:41Speaker 7: we're just gonna make ourselves available. We're gonna high point
- 8:43Speaker 7: the ball over the defender in massam. Right. That's what
- 8:46Speaker 7: we can do at six foot five, two hundred and
- 8:48Speaker 7: sixty pounds that other tight ends simply cannot do. Now,
- 8:52Speaker 7: we know he can play bullyball, we know he can
- 8:54Speaker 7: out muscle guys. But I also think that he's got
- 8:56Speaker 7: some bursts and some wiggle at the top of the route.
- 8:59Speaker 7: So he's gonn run a litle option here, get himself open,
- 9:02Speaker 7: and then turn up the field. Nice little inch concept
- 9:05Speaker 7: there by Penn State, and then this next clip right
- 9:07Speaker 7: now show off that versatility. Now, I don't think that
- 9:10Speaker 7: the wildcat is gonna be a big part of what
- 9:12Speaker 7: he's gonna bring to the table if he's drafted by
- 9:14Speaker 7: the Patriots. But the reason why I want to show
- 9:17Speaker 7: you him operating in the wildcat is because of how
- 9:20Speaker 7: smooth and explosive he is as a ball carrier in
- 9:23Speaker 7: the open field. Again, remember this is a six foot five,
- 9:26Speaker 7: two hundred and fifty plus tight end that is moving
- 9:28Speaker 7: like a running back. And watch him tightrope the sideline
- 9:31Speaker 7: and nearly get into the end zone here. That's pretty
- 9:34Speaker 7: rare at that size. The last one here, we have
- 9:36Speaker 7: the receiving ability, we have the yards after the catch,
- 9:38Speaker 7: and the ball carrying skill. Let's get to the blocking
- 9:41Speaker 7: right here on the end of the line of scrimmage,
- 9:43Speaker 7: we're gonna get to We're gonna bump this guy over first.
- 9:46Speaker 7: Then we're gonna get to the dB here on the outside.
- 9:48Speaker 7: And look at the rushing waye that he creates right
- 9:50Speaker 7: there for his running back.
- 9:52Speaker 2: So you can block.
- 9:53Speaker 7: He can catch passes. He can run with the football
- 9:55Speaker 7: in his hands. That's why Tyler Warren is a projected
- 9:58Speaker 7: top ten pick in this year's class. A couple of
- 10:01Speaker 7: other guys I want to highlight here before we wrap
- 10:03Speaker 7: this up. Colson Lovelin from Michigan, big, big fan of his.
- 10:07Speaker 7: He is more in Natt Travis Kelcey Brock Bauers archetype.
- 10:11Speaker 7: If Tyler Warren is like baby Gronk, I would say
- 10:13Speaker 7: Colson Lovelin similar to those guys. Explosive receiver bersie and
- 10:18Speaker 7: his routes really can make big plays happen in the
- 10:21Speaker 7: passing game. He's not a nothing blocker. I'd say he's
- 10:23Speaker 7: an above average blocker. But really, what you're getting with
- 10:26Speaker 7: Colson Lovelin is a jumbo receiver that can make big plays.
- 10:29Speaker 7: A couple other guys here on day two. You want
- 10:32Speaker 7: your seam runner, your crosser artist right there with Elijah
- 10:36Speaker 7: Royo from Miami. Harold Fannin had that big year last year,
- 10:39Speaker 7: record breaking season for Bowling Green. But the last name
- 10:42Speaker 7: I want to highlight here is Mason Taylor. We know
- 10:45Speaker 7: all about his father, Jason Taylor, from his days with
- 10:48Speaker 7: the Miami Dolphins, he's a younger prospect, had a great
- 10:51Speaker 7: Senior Bowl week, fantastic ball skills, really natural hands catcher
- 10:55Speaker 7: there by Mason Taylor. So those are my top five
- 10:58Speaker 7: tight ends. Tyler Warren obvious slee in play there at
- 11:01Speaker 7: number four overall for the Patriots, but just in general,
- 11:04Speaker 7: a really strong class.
- 11:06Speaker 6: What's up, everybody, I'm a tease bowmen here with Chris Cassi.
- 11:08Speaker 6: We got a new segment on the Patriots Draft Countdown
- 11:11Speaker 6: podcast presented by Bud Light. We're gonna break down some
- 11:13Speaker 6: of the Patriots mock drafts from the experts around the league.
- 11:16Speaker 6: This is all available on the patriots dot com mock
- 11:18Speaker 6: draft track. We want to talk about it live, so
- 11:20Speaker 6: Chris our very own Mike do so we'll get started
- 11:23Speaker 6: with it.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Sure it up with money?
- 11:25Speaker 6: Has the Patriots select an Ashton genty from Boise State?
- 11:28Speaker 3: I mean, all right, this is my take on that.
- 11:32Speaker 3: All right, Patriots will need a running back in this draft.
- 11:35Speaker 3: In my opinion, I think there's a lot of running backs,
- 11:37Speaker 3: a lot of depth there. I don't know if you
- 11:39Speaker 3: take Ashton, gents have four. Yeah. My only thought here
- 11:42Speaker 3: is there's more important needs to be filled and you
- 11:48Speaker 3: need you need the ausome tackle. You need a left tackle.
- 11:50Speaker 3: You got Morgan Moses. We can play right tackle forever,
- 11:53Speaker 3: who has played right tackle forever.
- 11:54Speaker 6: I wish you could play for it.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, but you need the wide receiver and you
- 12:00Speaker 3: need the left tackle. You know, Travis Hunter is really
- 12:03Speaker 3: appealing there at four Ashton Gentsy. I don't know if
- 12:06Speaker 3: he really gets it done for you there. Yeah, I
- 12:08Speaker 3: think there's more valuable options if you want to get
- 12:10Speaker 3: Ashton gents maybe trade back some sort of scenario like that.
- 12:13Speaker 6: But so I viewed genty as a luxury pick. I
- 12:17Speaker 6: think if the Patriots sooner situation similar to the Bengals
- 12:19Speaker 6: in twenty twenty one, I believe, where Joe Burrow hurt
- 12:22Speaker 6: his knee, but the team was pretty set. They hurt
- 12:24Speaker 6: his knee, they get Jamar Chase. Look where they are
- 12:27Speaker 6: Patriots aren't in that situation. We have the quarterback, but
- 12:30Speaker 6: we have so many other needs that I don't think
- 12:32Speaker 6: it's the right pick.
- 12:34Speaker 3: What I would compare it to as well, though, is
- 12:36Speaker 3: like the Derrick Henry coming into the draft, like he
- 12:39Speaker 3: has that much promise and he's that good at his position,
- 12:42Speaker 3: but he needs to go to a team that specifically
- 12:45Speaker 3: needs that needs to fill their running back hole.
- 12:48Speaker 6: And that being said, Chris, we'll get to this in
- 12:50Speaker 6: the next couple episodes. This is a pretty deep running
- 12:52Speaker 6: back class. So if you if you pass on genty,
- 12:54Speaker 6: you're good. But Deuce, I love the h the ambition,
- 12:58Speaker 6: I like it. I like it got the pep talking.
- 13:00Speaker 6: So Chris, we move on to Daniel Jeremiah mel kiper ESPN,
- 13:04Speaker 6: and we also throw Evan Lazar in there with his
- 13:06Speaker 6: mock Draft one point zero. Travis Hunter cornerback, wide receiver.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I mean, I think that's the most appealing pick YEP
- 13:12Speaker 3: in this draft. I mean, you're one two punch in
- 13:15Speaker 3: the draft in this twenty twenty five draft. Abdul Carter,
- 13:18Speaker 3: Travis Hunter. I think those are your one two guy
- 13:21Speaker 3: top two guys in the draft really can step up
- 13:24Speaker 3: immediate starters depending on where they're putting them on the ball.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Travis Hunter, as we're talking about right now, I mean,
- 13:30Speaker 3: he could be your wide receiver one if he wanted
- 13:33Speaker 3: to better himself. I think he needs to get his
- 13:35Speaker 3: hands in a better spot. I think he's a little
- 13:37Speaker 3: bit better defensively. That's just my opinion. But the Patriots
- 13:41Speaker 3: need like both sides, you know what I mean. So,
- 13:44Speaker 3: however you want to use him, I think Travis Hunter's
- 13:47Speaker 3: your guy. You can kind of utilize it and work
- 13:49Speaker 3: around it any way you want.
- 13:50Speaker 6: Yeah, he's optioned one B for me. One A we'll
- 13:53Speaker 6: get to later, but one be just him being a receiver.
- 13:56Speaker 6: That instinct really helps him be a cornerback as well.
- 13:58Speaker 6: But the Patriots added Carlton Davis, so you got Gonzo Davis,
- 14:01Speaker 6: you could put Travis Hunter there. So, hey, if you
- 14:03Speaker 6: get him, you're scary already.
- 14:05Speaker 3: If you want to use Travis Hunter as a wide
- 14:08Speaker 3: receiver primarily, you can still use him in your nickel package.
- 14:11Speaker 3: He is, like, he has so much experience playing both
- 14:14Speaker 3: sides of the ball. You could throw him out there
- 14:16Speaker 3: for twenty five percent of the defensive snaps in a
- 14:19Speaker 3: game and he'll be productive for you.
- 14:21Speaker 6: And Chris, So those are those are three big names there, Dan,
- 14:23Speaker 6: Jemiah melkiper Junior, and our own Evan Lazar. But we'll
- 14:27Speaker 6: get onto the pick number three. From mock draft number three,
- 14:32Speaker 6: we got Josh Edwards, Chris Japasso from CBS Sports, and
- 14:35Speaker 6: Evan Lazar's most recent mock draft two point zero which
- 14:38Speaker 6: just went up on Patriots dot Com. They have him
- 14:40Speaker 6: taking Will Campbell offensive tackle l now.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Now Will Campbell another guy. I mean, I don't want
- 14:48Speaker 3: do you want? Does Armlake matter? Absolutely? I don't think
- 14:51Speaker 3: it matters in the case for Will Campbell. I think
- 14:54Speaker 3: he's one of the best offensive line blockers in college football.
- 14:58Speaker 3: I think he's he's got great speed. Whatever you need
- 15:02Speaker 3: him to do, he'll do it. So that being said,
- 15:06Speaker 3: as a tackle, you could put him there, I'm sure
- 15:08Speaker 3: he'll be productive. Could he maybe be more productive on
- 15:11Speaker 3: an interior line position possibly, which we need now? Absolutely? Yeah, absolutely,
- 15:16Speaker 3: So you kind of have to gauge that situation. I
- 15:19Speaker 3: do think Will Campbell will be productive out of tackle spot.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Me personally, I don't know if I would go to
- 15:25Speaker 3: the Campbell route. I just I don't know. I feel like, again,
- 15:30Speaker 3: I'm so set on the Travis Hunter and.
- 15:32Speaker 6: Well, definitely Chris that being said, But that being said,
- 15:35Speaker 6: it's not the sexy pick. That's the least sexy out
- 15:37Speaker 6: of all of it. But he's he's a grinder and
- 15:39Speaker 6: people forget beginning of the year for twenty four. I mean,
- 15:42Speaker 6: he was consensus pick number one before Hunter hit the scene.
- 15:45Speaker 6: An Abdol Carter. So, I mean, I don't really believe
- 15:48Speaker 6: the arm length thing. I kind of put it like
- 15:50Speaker 6: DK Metcalf with the three cone drill. If he can play,
- 15:52Speaker 6: you can play. But I'd be okay with it. But
- 15:54Speaker 6: out of the people we've mentioned so far, my least favorite.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Yeah, again, I like him a lot, but I think
- 15:59Speaker 3: there's more through left tackles in this draft.
- 16:02Speaker 6: Yep, all right, so Chris, we move on for me.
- 16:05Speaker 6: Pick one A. We got Field Yates, Charles Davis, Abdull Carter,
- 16:10Speaker 6: Penn State number four, overall.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Absolute menace on the field. I mean his body like
- 16:16Speaker 3: he's your pure edge rusher, Like he's the guy you
- 16:20Speaker 3: want to line up week one, and he's going to
- 16:24Speaker 3: have immedia production on the field. And I just think
- 16:28Speaker 3: on everyone's draft boards, regardless of needs, he's everybody's one one. Yeah,
- 16:32Speaker 3: it just comes down to what teams specifically need at
- 16:34Speaker 3: that point.
- 16:35Speaker 6: I mean, Chris, if the Titans take cam Ward, Browns
- 16:37Speaker 6: take Sudarry, you're getting one of those other three guys
- 16:40Speaker 6: we've said. That being said Abdul Carter, it kind of
- 16:43Speaker 6: reminds me of the twenty seventeen draft. The Browns took
- 16:46Speaker 6: Miles Garrett. They needed a quarterback. Listen, that draft had Mahomes, Watson,
- 16:52Speaker 6: Christian McCaffrey, and they picked Miles Garrett. And I think
- 16:55Speaker 6: the Patriots are their best spot because we have the quarterback.
- 16:58Speaker 6: So if we can take Abdol cart Are at four,
- 17:01Speaker 6: it's from the football guys, you run with it and
- 17:03Speaker 6: you're good.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I agree. I think he's your one A. Like like
- 17:06Speaker 3: you said earlier, I think one A Abdula Carter, one
- 17:09Speaker 3: B Travis Hunter. And people are gonna be back and
- 17:11Speaker 3: forth on the Travis Hunter pick because they're like, oh,
- 17:13Speaker 3: well we have gone zone. Yes, we signed Carlton Davis.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Of course those are important, and people again are skeptical
- 17:19Speaker 3: at some points of Travis Hunter's wide receiver game. But
- 17:22Speaker 3: I just athletically and what you'd be able to do
- 17:25Speaker 3: with these guys on the field, I think those have
- 17:27Speaker 3: to year one A, one B.
- 17:30Speaker 6: So, Chris, this is just the week after free agency.
- 17:33Speaker 6: A lot more to come. More mock drafts have come.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Our next segment, we're gonna be doing our own three
- 17:37Speaker 6: round mock, so we'll let you know what we do.
- 17:39Speaker 6: We break that down, But guys, thanks for tuning in
- 17:41Speaker 6: let's get back to the rest of the Patriots Draft
- 17:42Speaker 6: count on Podcasts presented by Bud Light.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Okay, the first position we're breaking down here is the
- 17:47Speaker 4: position guys I'm glad that we got last year because
- 17:50Speaker 4: it's pretty barren out there as far as the quarterbacks
- 17:53Speaker 4: this year. Two guys atop the list though, cam Ward
- 17:55Speaker 4: Shadur Sanders, two guys that I think we're all hoping
- 17:59Speaker 4: that maybe go in the top five or sorry, top
- 18:01Speaker 4: three really and push down Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter
- 18:05Speaker 4: maybe to the Patriots. That's probably the most interesting thing
- 18:08Speaker 4: about these quarterbacks this year. But Paul's start with you,
- 18:11Speaker 4: just what are your impression with those top two guys.
- 18:13Speaker 5: I would think you nailed the setting there. That's exactly
- 18:16Speaker 5: what the Patriots are hoping for both of those guys
- 18:18Speaker 5: to go in the top three. I don't think it's
- 18:20Speaker 5: gonna happen because to me, it's really not the top
- 18:22Speaker 5: two guys. It's the top one guy, cam Ward and
- 18:26Speaker 5: then the next guy, Shado Sanders, and I do think
- 18:28Speaker 5: there's a gap between Sanders and the rest, but I
- 18:31Speaker 5: think there's also a gap between Ward and Sanders. So
- 18:35Speaker 5: I'm sort of intrigued. I liked cam Ward at Washington
- 18:37Speaker 5: State a lot. I didn't see him as much last
- 18:39Speaker 5: year in Miami. I know he was a little sort
- 18:42Speaker 5: of up and down. They had an explosive offense, but
- 18:45Speaker 5: there's a lot of skills there I think to work with,
- 18:47Speaker 5: and I think that you guys would know better coming
- 18:50Speaker 5: back from the combine a few weeks ago. It seems
- 18:54Speaker 5: like the NFL guys are a little bit more sold
- 18:56Speaker 5: on him than they are the rest.
- 18:57Speaker 7: Yeah, I think you broke it down perfectly those tiers.
- 19:01Speaker 7: The question is just where does Schador fit into all
- 19:03Speaker 7: of this and what's his ceiling, what's his floor in
- 19:06Speaker 7: terms of where he goes in the draft. Cam Ward
- 19:08Speaker 7: feels like a top quarterback prospect a way that he's
- 19:11Speaker 7: being discussed by, you know, people that we spoke to
- 19:14Speaker 7: at the combine deuce and things like that. So he's
- 19:17Speaker 7: a he's got a free arm, you know, loose arm,
- 19:19Speaker 7: really can whip the ball anywhere from different arm angles,
- 19:22Speaker 7: has that whole like you know, gunslinger playmaker thing that
- 19:27Speaker 7: everybody likes nowadays, can run a little bit. I would
- 19:30Speaker 7: say that his skill set reminds me the most of
- 19:32Speaker 7: like a Russell Wilson type, you know, prime Russell Wilson,
- 19:35Speaker 7: with the way that he can throw the ball deep
- 19:36Speaker 7: and you know, move around and things like that. But
- 19:39Speaker 7: he's he's being talked about it a little bit differently
- 19:42Speaker 7: than the rest of this class. And if you're a
- 19:44Speaker 7: quarterback needy team, it's just a matter of, you know,
- 19:46Speaker 7: do you draft Shadoor Sanders in the first round or
- 19:48Speaker 7: do you draft a similar high floor guy like Will
- 19:51Speaker 7: Howard or something like that on Day two? And I
- 19:54Speaker 7: feel like that's where the Patriots are are circling, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 7: crossing their fingers that somebody jumps early Tez we.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Saw Should Sanders at the combine. Does not lack for
- 20:03Speaker 4: confidence at all. I said, I think he's got all
- 20:05Speaker 4: this dad's confidence, maybe not quite all his dad's skill.
- 20:07Speaker 6: But what do you think is Should would if this
- 20:10Speaker 6: was your team, would you make the move for him?
- 20:11Speaker 6: I am a chador guy, But that being said, this
- 20:13Speaker 6: is just it's not a strong class. You always see
- 20:15Speaker 6: quarterbacks be hyped up. Every year has shades of twenty
- 20:19Speaker 6: twenty two with Pickett and rock Party, which is funny
- 20:22Speaker 6: because Pickett just won a Super Bowl, won a Super
- 20:23Speaker 6: Bowl and party's mister irrelevant. But that being said, I
- 20:27Speaker 6: like Shador. He's more of a pro typical quarterback compared
- 20:30Speaker 6: to cam Ward. I think the question is if you're
- 20:33Speaker 6: one of those teams, is this the guy like you're
- 20:35Speaker 6: drafted in one or two? Is that like you're gonna
- 20:37Speaker 6: have to bank on him for a couple of years?
- 20:39Speaker 6: You want to go through the growing pains again, or
- 20:41Speaker 6: maybe get a better player like Abdol Carter or Travis Hunter,
- 20:43Speaker 6: which would be bad for the Patriots obviously, and then
- 20:46Speaker 6: deal with the growing pains.
- 20:47Speaker 4: So I was hoping you were gonna talk me into
- 20:49Speaker 4: the going overall.
- 20:51Speaker 7: Hey, I feel like I, you know, we come across
- 20:55Speaker 7: like Shador can't play at all.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Sometimes I think he's a good player.
- 20:58Speaker 7: Yeah, I just think that there's questions of out how
- 21:00Speaker 7: good of a player is he going to be?
- 21:02Speaker 2: What's his ceiling?
- 21:03Speaker 7: I think he's really polished actually for this point, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 7: pocket poised mechanics. He throws a good ball, but there
- 21:10Speaker 7: isn't that wow factor when you watch his tape.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Well, that being said too, he's playing behind a very
- 21:14Speaker 6: bad offensive line. That being said, some of the teams
- 21:17Speaker 6: draft him, would that would draft him don't have the
- 21:19Speaker 6: best line, but it'd be interesting to see if he
- 21:21Speaker 6: falls in the right place what his potential could be.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Yeah, moving down the list a little bit, Jackson Dart.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Did you see him down to the Senior Bowl?
- 21:26Speaker 6: Oh?
- 21:27Speaker 7: Yeah, so you got to see the ball week ever apparently.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Well it was for a while there we were talking
- 21:31Speaker 4: about he's gonna elevate. It seems like that's maybe settled
- 21:34Speaker 4: in a little bit. He's that maybe I don't want
- 21:36Speaker 4: to say B level because I'm not sure that Shador
- 21:38Speaker 4: is at B level guy, but he's that maybe seems
- 21:41Speaker 4: like that third guy to come.
- 21:42Speaker 2: He's the wild card.
- 21:43Speaker 7: You could fall in love with the traits with Jackson
- 21:45Speaker 7: Dart and I would totally understand it. If it was
- 21:47Speaker 7: seven on seven, Jackson Dart would would be a top
- 21:50Speaker 7: five pick, right. Like, guy can really sling it. He
- 21:52Speaker 7: throws a great ball, He's got a great arm. He
- 21:55Speaker 7: can throw on the run, he can throw from the pocket.
- 21:58Speaker 7: He really has no limitations from a physical standpoint. But
- 22:02Speaker 7: he played in one of those college air raid systems.
- 22:05Speaker 7: You know, there's a lot of RPO, there's a lot
- 22:07Speaker 7: of one read things that were going on for him
- 22:10Speaker 7: there at Ole Miss, so like he's going to have
- 22:12Speaker 7: to prove that, you know, he can do a little
- 22:14Speaker 7: bit more than I think some of the things he
- 22:16Speaker 7: showed in college at the next level. But he's got
- 22:19Speaker 7: a lot of traits that you can fall in love with.
- 22:21Speaker 7: And when you see him in a practice setting, like
- 22:23Speaker 7: down in Mobile where he's wearing a non contact jersey
- 22:26Speaker 7: and he's just kind of standing there throwing balls in practice,
- 22:29Speaker 7: I can tell why people would watch that and say,
- 22:32Speaker 7: this guy's got something going here.
- 22:34Speaker 2: But you watch his.
- 22:35Speaker 7: College tape and it's just a roller coaster. It's just
- 22:37Speaker 7: a lot of ups and downs.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 5: I mean, from a pure skills standpoint, I think you
- 22:41Speaker 5: can make an argument he's more skilled than Sanders. But
- 22:45Speaker 5: everything Evan said is right in that whole Old Miss system.
- 22:48Speaker 5: And there's a reason why those quarterbacks and there's some
- 22:51Speaker 5: good guys with good skills, like Matt Carrall was a
- 22:55Speaker 5: guy obviously the Patriots fans are, you know, mildly familiar with.
- 22:58Speaker 5: There's a reason why different teams are giving those guys
- 23:01Speaker 5: opportunities because they were enamored with the skill sets. But
- 23:04Speaker 5: I think that the system down there, while it's a
- 23:07Speaker 5: very effective college system hasn't necessariarily translated. I think if
- 23:11Speaker 5: you look back to like Texas Tech, you know, the
- 23:14Speaker 5: old Mike Leech Air raid, you know.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Kind of a thing.
- 23:17Speaker 5: A lot of those guys just didn't work, you know
- 23:20Speaker 5: when they got to the NFL, and then all of
- 23:21Speaker 5: a sudden, Patrick Mahomes came. So maybe Jackson Dart's the
- 23:25Speaker 5: guy that sort of breaks them old. I'd be a
- 23:27Speaker 5: little bit more skeptical the way Evan sounded. I think
- 23:29Speaker 5: he can play. I think physically he's a guy I
- 23:32Speaker 5: wouldn't mind taking a chance on in day two as
- 23:35Speaker 5: a developmental guy. You mentioned Will Howard also, I would
- 23:39Speaker 5: be in on those guys as a developmental guy. But
- 23:41Speaker 5: if you think you're gonna like, oh, I'm gonna I'm
- 23:44Speaker 5: gonna beat the system. I'm gonna take Jackson Dart at
- 23:46Speaker 5: twenty two and I'm going to have my guy, I
- 23:48Speaker 5: don't think it's gonna work out for you.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Yeah, but I want you don't need to believe in
- 23:51Speaker 4: this position too much. But you guys mentioned Will Howard,
- 23:53Speaker 4: Riley Leonard, two guys that faced each other in the
- 23:55Speaker 4: National Championship Game, and Quinn your is another name I
- 23:58Speaker 4: would just throw in there guys that are to have
- 24:00Speaker 4: some name brand recognition. But as we get to the draft,
- 24:03Speaker 4: you mentioned Will Howard is maybe a guy with a
- 24:05Speaker 4: floor and maybe worth working with. But what do you
- 24:07Speaker 4: guys think of those those three teas.
- 24:09Speaker 6: It's just interesting you see Quin yours, Will Howard, all
- 24:12Speaker 6: those guys, I wonder where they're gonna end up falling
- 24:14Speaker 6: because the drop is pre significant. You also have guys
- 24:16Speaker 6: like Jalen Milroe, Like, they all have some positive traits.
- 24:20Speaker 6: So I think they're gonna end up in the fourth round,
- 24:22Speaker 6: like you could take a shot on them. But if
- 24:24Speaker 6: that case, you probably said a quarterback, they're gonna develop
- 24:26Speaker 6: for a couple of years.
- 24:27Speaker 5: Day three guys I would agree with with tease, and
- 24:30Speaker 5: you know I would. You know, Tyler Shock is a
- 24:32Speaker 5: guy that you know, I don't know if if there's
- 24:34Speaker 5: ever been a more experienced quarterback.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Coming out of college.
- 24:37Speaker 5: I mean seven seasons three at Oregon, three at Texas Tech,
- 24:40Speaker 5: and last year at Louisville. Maybe he's too old.
- 24:44Speaker 4: I really liked him at the Combine in the podium,
- 24:46Speaker 4: I just found him. I thought he presented himself well, you.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Know, obviously, you know everybody looks at Jayden Daniels. Now
- 24:52Speaker 5: you know he played six years and how you need
- 24:54Speaker 5: that experience and.
- 24:55Speaker 2: That's how you do it. So maybe he'll get a
- 24:57Speaker 2: look as a Day three guy. Maybe not, I don't know.
- 25:00Speaker 5: But he's a guy that sort of had some periods
- 25:02Speaker 5: of productivity in college.
- 25:04Speaker 7: Yeah, you mentioned the Howards, the Leonards. I think those
- 25:07Speaker 7: guys are backups to maybe low end starter talents just
- 25:11Speaker 7: in terms of their ceiling. But Tyler Show is one
- 25:14Speaker 7: of those guys that had six foot five, two hundred
- 25:16Speaker 7: and twenty five pounds, and.
- 25:18Speaker 2: You watch his tape.
- 25:19Speaker 7: He's like kind of the Draft Knicks favorite quarterback in
- 25:21Speaker 7: this class because he just makes some throws that are
- 25:23Speaker 7: just you know, from ridiculous arm angles and stuff like that.
- 25:26Speaker 7: There's one of him in the red zone where I
- 25:28Speaker 7: don't really know if a human arm is supposed to
- 25:30Speaker 7: go at that angle, and he just like kind of
- 25:32Speaker 7: flips it almost like underhand to a receiver. And so
- 25:35Speaker 7: he does a lot of that kind of stuff on
- 25:37Speaker 7: tape that gets clipped and put on Twitter and things
- 25:39Speaker 7: like that, and makes the rounds.
- 25:41Speaker 2: The other guy.
- 25:42Speaker 7: I think that has some upside that teams could take
- 25:44Speaker 7: a chance on his Jalen Milroe, I just look at him.
- 25:47Speaker 7: His ability to run obviously is a big part of it.
- 25:50Speaker 7: But if you build an offense around him like Philly
- 25:53Speaker 7: did with Jalen Hurts, and it specializes in the things
- 25:56Speaker 7: that he can do, then I do think that you
- 25:58Speaker 7: could make a productive offense around Jalen Milroe. A little
- 26:01Speaker 7: raw still as a passer, but can really whip it,
- 26:04Speaker 7: can run. I would look at him as someone that
- 26:06Speaker 7: if you want to bet on trades, you know, those
- 26:08Speaker 7: two guys are the trades guys, and then Howard and
- 26:11Speaker 7: Riley Leonard and those guys are sort of the floor,
- 26:14Speaker 7: you know, backup types.
- 26:15Speaker 6: I mean, I agree with Evan also with Milroe. You
- 26:17Speaker 6: look at the beginning of the college season. I mean
- 26:19Speaker 6: they were saying he was going to go top five. So,
- 26:21Speaker 6: I mean the talent is there and it'll be very interesting.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Maybe gets that backup role, somebody gets hurt, give him
- 26:26Speaker 6: a chance, see what happens.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Yeah, anybody else that I didn't mention that you guys
- 26:29Speaker 4: are a particularly interested in and not a big position
- 26:31Speaker 4: to need for the Patriots.
- 26:32Speaker 6: Patriots got lucky. That's all I'm gonna say.
- 26:34Speaker 4: True enough, Drake May last year, so that's going to
- 26:36Speaker 4: do it for the quarterback positional preview as well as
- 26:39Speaker 4: this episode of Patriots Draft Countdown. We'll back next week
- 26:42Speaker 4: when I have a jam packed episode
