Latest / Birdland Territory / O's blow the lead in Anaheim and have a losing road trip

- 0:07Speaker 1: That was frustrating, capital f other bedwords. Birdland is saying
- 0:13Speaker 1: tonight as the Oils let it get away. They had
- 0:15Speaker 1: a three run lead at Anaheim and a winning road
- 0:17Speaker 1: trip at hand, and they could not close the deal.
- 0:21Speaker 1: They lose today seven to six the Los Angeles Angels.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So they come home with the off day Thursday, thirty
- 0:28Speaker 1: eight and forty four.
- 0:29Speaker 2: They're back to six under.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Every time this team starts digging themselves out of a hole,
- 0:34Speaker 1: they never finish it. And now we're past a halfway point,
- 0:38Speaker 1: which you know that happened in Anaheim, and now you
- 0:42Speaker 1: know games are you know there's less than eighty one
- 0:44Speaker 1: to play. It's what I'm trying to say here after
- 0:47Speaker 1: a frustrating day of orio baseball, guys, Let's start with
- 0:50Speaker 1: the decision to take Trey Gibson out that frustrated me.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Today.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I saw him through a great fourth inning throw ninety
- 0:57Speaker 1: seven plus twice strikeout to batters sixty six pitches. The
- 1:02Speaker 1: argument that the Beat media was saying on Twitter they
- 1:06Speaker 1: needed to pitch some guys bullpen fully rested off day
- 1:09Speaker 1: tomorrow makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense is
- 1:12Speaker 1: this kid was dealing after he gave up a first
- 1:15Speaker 1: inning homer, and maybe you know if you didn't wanthim
- 1:18Speaker 1: to face the third time of the order. He's good
- 1:21Speaker 1: enough to face the Yankees, he's good enough to face
- 1:23Speaker 1: the Dodgers. He should have been, in my opinion, good
- 1:26Speaker 1: enough to face the Angels up three after four innings today,
- 1:31Speaker 1: but he didn't get the chance.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's frustrating. I mean, there's there's no other way
- 1:36Speaker 3: to describe that. Friday night hurt. Today hurt even worse.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I feel like it was you felt like the game
- 1:42Speaker 3: was in hand there, they were scoring some runs, and
- 1:45Speaker 3: then the offense just kind of went silent, and I think,
- 1:49Speaker 3: on top of taking Trey out and kind of maybe
- 1:52Speaker 3: a questionable decision to trying to get fifteen outs out
- 1:54Speaker 3: of your bullpen that needed to work, it's just not
- 1:57Speaker 3: adding on. And I feel like that's been kind of
- 1:59Speaker 3: a running theme, is is they get leads and they're
- 2:02Speaker 3: just not able to add on and make it more
- 2:04Speaker 3: comfortable of a game where maybe that decision wouldn't have
- 2:07Speaker 3: come into play. But it's to me, it's just kind
- 2:10Speaker 3: of after watching that fourth inning that might have been
- 2:12Speaker 3: his best inning all year, and to take him out
- 2:14Speaker 3: after that I don't know. I know the bullpen needs work.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It's I think the bullpen back in April and May,
- 2:19Speaker 3: when they were rolling good. I think it's maybe a
- 2:22Speaker 3: different discussion. But as of late, it hasn't been as
- 2:25Speaker 3: rock solid as it was earlier in the season.
- 2:27Speaker 4: And it's it's tough to get fifteen outs.
- 2:29Speaker 3: It's tough to ask five guys to go out there
- 2:31Speaker 3: and get three outs.
- 2:32Speaker 4: To finish that game. I know being part of bullpends.
- 2:34Speaker 3: No matter how good a bullpen I've been a part of,
- 2:37Speaker 3: you just know it takes one kind of missed link
- 2:39Speaker 3: in the cog there and a loss goes away. And
- 2:41Speaker 3: that's I mean, a win goes away. And that's kind
- 2:43Speaker 3: of what happened today. It's just a very very frustrating
- 2:46Speaker 3: loss to watch.
- 2:48Speaker 5: Yeah, it really was. And it's just one step four,
- 2:52Speaker 5: one step back. I feel like I'm saying that every
- 2:55Speaker 5: single episode. You know, you get that great series win
- 2:59Speaker 5: against the Dodgers, you win Monday, Kyle Bradish was dominant
- 3:03Speaker 5: in that game. You just needed one of these last
- 3:06Speaker 5: two to have a winning road trip. And last night,
- 3:10Speaker 5: Ryan Johnson, a guy that's been getting shelled and he
- 3:15Speaker 5: no hit the Orioles. You know, through the first five
- 3:17Speaker 5: innings or whatever of that ballgame, went six shutout innings,
- 3:20Speaker 5: just faced two batters over the minimum. And then today,
- 3:24Speaker 5: you know, Trey Gibson, we were talking about live, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 5: doing the show on the fan today, and I had
- 3:30Speaker 5: a feeling that there was definitely going to be a
- 3:32Speaker 5: quick hook for Gibson if he did get in trouble.
- 3:35Speaker 5: But kind of like what you guys were saying, that
- 3:38Speaker 5: was a really strong inning, and Craig Albern has acknowledged
- 3:41Speaker 5: as much in his postgame press or that he got
- 3:44Speaker 5: better as the game went on. You know, had scuffled
- 3:47Speaker 5: a little bit the first inning. I think he entered
- 3:51Speaker 5: that game knowing that it was kind of a pseudo
- 3:54Speaker 5: bullpen game because they really haven't pitched much over the
- 3:57Speaker 5: past couple of days. Albert Suarez went three inning yesterday,
- 4:01Speaker 5: Rico Garcia only threw one inning. But Brad, I think
- 4:04Speaker 5: you bring up a good point, like just look at
- 4:06Speaker 5: some of the guys that have pitched Wolfram Wells, they
- 4:09Speaker 5: were fantastic and heck, even Helsley, I'll throw him in there.
- 4:12Speaker 5: But Rico Garcia, he's hitting a bit of a wall
- 4:16Speaker 5: here and that was inevitable, like he was on this
- 4:19Speaker 5: magic carpet ride for so long that he was going
- 4:22Speaker 5: to face some adversity. You ner Cano, he didn't have
- 4:25Speaker 5: his command. He walked a couple guys, Keegan Aiken. I
- 4:28Speaker 5: was probably the best we've seen him in a while.
- 4:30Speaker 5: But yeah, then it gets back to the defensive blunders,
- 4:33Speaker 5: which has been a season long theme, and it kind
- 4:36Speaker 5: of settled a bit there for a while. But boy
- 4:39Speaker 5: is rough and shoddy defense really reard tot ugly head
- 4:43Speaker 5: in the past week or two.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yikes, let's talk about the ending one out to get
- 4:52Speaker 1: ground ball. Why the first Peter Linzo makes one move
- 4:55Speaker 1: to second, and that changed everything because now he couldn't
- 4:59Speaker 1: get to the fir Aken is trying to get there,
- 5:02Speaker 1: not knowing his Pete's going to get there, and it
- 5:04Speaker 1: was a cluster and the ball was not caught.
- 5:07Speaker 2: If, as Palmer said, if.
- 5:08Speaker 1: He catches it, it would have been a really difficult play.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But the game's over didn't catch it. So now the
- 5:14Speaker 1: runner advanced the third Sammy tries to tag him, he
- 5:17Speaker 1: went wide. I didn't hear anybody mention out a base line,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and I guess that didn't factor here. He went wide
- 5:23Speaker 1: to that tag and he could have thrown the first
- 5:26Speaker 1: maybe gets and maybe he does. And all these are
- 5:27Speaker 1: split second, game on the line decisions that all didn't
- 5:31Speaker 1: work out today, at least two of them didn't at
- 5:33Speaker 1: the end for the Orioles.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's I mean that ground ball the second base.
- 5:38Speaker 4: That game has to be over like that is as.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Routine the big league play as it comes. And you know,
- 5:44Speaker 3: play with Pete. He's been phenomenal at first base this year.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Let me say that first.
- 5:47Speaker 4: He's been unbelievable.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I think he's been way better than anybody of the
- 5:51Speaker 3: Orioles expected this season. To me when I played with
- 5:54Speaker 3: him in New York, that was kind of a tendancy
- 5:56Speaker 3: he had was to take a step or two towards
- 5:58Speaker 3: second base. You knew that as a pitcher, so I
- 6:00Speaker 3: think Keegan aken did get there in time. But when
- 6:03Speaker 3: you see Pee coming at you, that's a big man
- 6:05Speaker 3: coming at your first base, and I think that was
- 6:07Speaker 3: a hesitancy to keep going because it did look like
- 6:09Speaker 3: he might get there. And it's just that it I mean,
- 6:12Speaker 3: it's just that game has to be over there. It's
- 6:15Speaker 3: just frustrating, and it's, uh, you know, I kind of
- 6:18Speaker 3: going back to Steve what you said about, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 3: the beat writers calling for you know, guys that get
- 6:24Speaker 3: in the game.
- 6:25Speaker 4: To me, it's not spring training. These games count, they matter.
- 6:28Speaker 4: You need work.
- 6:29Speaker 3: There's a bullpen out there, you can throw one hundred
- 6:31Speaker 3: pitches if you need work after the game. And that's
- 6:33Speaker 3: what bothers me about the way baseball is kind of
- 6:36Speaker 3: being played at this point, is that it's almost like
- 6:39Speaker 3: it's a pseudo between Triple A and the major leagues,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and it's we got to get these guys in because
- 6:44Speaker 3: they need work, because we have today tomorrow. He's had
- 6:46Speaker 3: four days off. There's always time after the game to
- 6:49Speaker 3: do these things. And it's just when you see the
- 6:51Speaker 3: pitcher go out there in the fourth inning and dominate
- 6:53Speaker 3: like he did, there's no reason to have to throw
- 6:56Speaker 3: five guys in the game today to get the win.
- 6:57Speaker 3: And I know I'm kind of off topic, but it
- 7:00Speaker 3: just kind of bothers me when I hear people talking about, like, well,
- 7:03Speaker 3: the bullpen needs work.
- 7:04Speaker 4: They've had a lot of rest.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It's just the game, Like when the game starts, that
- 7:08Speaker 3: stuff goes out the window and you have to get
- 7:10Speaker 3: the win. And to me, it was just a tough
- 7:12Speaker 3: strategy to go about that game today, to try to
- 7:14Speaker 3: get that win in to salvage this road trip, which
- 7:16Speaker 3: was so promising on Monday. Like you said, Kyle Brad
- 7:19Speaker 3: is dominated. And unfortunately though the plays at the end
- 7:22Speaker 3: of the game too, is kind of added to the
- 7:23Speaker 3: frustration because we've seen those types of play all year.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't buy that argument either.
- 7:30Speaker 1: You asked the bullpen today to cover fifteen outs wound
- 7:33Speaker 1: up being more because we went to the ten.
- 7:36Speaker 2: They needed fifteen outs of work. They couldn't get it
- 7:38Speaker 2: done with seven.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Or eight or nine, because each time you turn to
- 7:42Speaker 1: a new guy, he may not have it. And so
- 7:45Speaker 1: I just today was if this was about analytics or
- 7:48Speaker 1: third time through or all these decisions that are prevalent
- 7:51Speaker 1: in baseball today, sometimes you got to look at your
- 7:54Speaker 1: picture and what is he doing? And like you mentioned Tim,
- 7:58Speaker 1: they needed work. If he had given up runs in
- 8:00Speaker 1: the fourth, maybe I'm more open to what happened. But
- 8:03Speaker 1: he gave up runs in the first, and then he
- 8:06Speaker 1: pitched three scoreless, and then he's throwing ninety seven and
- 8:09Speaker 1: then he's striking guys out and then he's.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Out of the game.
- 8:13Speaker 1: It doesn't add up this If this was analytics, then
- 8:17Speaker 1: analytics today when oh And won for the Orioles. I mean,
- 8:23Speaker 1: it's just, you know, why not just leave the kid
- 8:26Speaker 1: in the game who's throwing ninety seven and striking guys out.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He's your best pitching prospect. You started him at Yankee Stadium.
- 8:35Speaker 1: He was good enough to do that. You started him
- 8:37Speaker 1: in Dodgers Stadium, he was good enough to do that.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Why is he not good enough at sixty six pitches
- 8:44Speaker 1: to take the mound in the fifth against the last
- 8:47Speaker 1: place Angels leading by three runs. That's as calmly as
- 8:51Speaker 1: I can say that.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Well, and Brad I think makes a great point, Like, guys,
- 8:57Speaker 5: we're past the halfway point at this point, and the
- 9:00Speaker 5: Orioles heading into today, they're five games below five hundred.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Despite that, you're still two games out of the Wild Cards,
- 9:07Speaker 5: so you have to do everything in your power to
- 9:09Speaker 5: win games, and style points are out the window, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 5: getting guys in to get this type of work, because
- 9:16Speaker 5: each of these guys that you throw in bullpen wise,
- 9:20Speaker 5: which what they threw seven guys. I believe the variance
- 9:25Speaker 5: continues to add up because I think Brad or Steve,
- 9:27Speaker 5: one of you guys said it not everyone's gonna have
- 9:30Speaker 5: it today, and they didn't. You know, we went through it.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Cano wasn't sharp. Kitchridge, it's been a little rough for him.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Rico Garcia it's been rough for him of late. Like
- 9:40Speaker 5: each one that you add, you're adding more of a
- 9:43Speaker 5: probability going to the analytics of that guy's not gonna
- 9:47Speaker 5: have it, you know. So if you can prolong that
- 9:51Speaker 5: and have Trey Gibson get an extra out two, three, four,
- 9:56Speaker 5: then that brings that probability down. You're gonna have to
- 9:58Speaker 5: use one or two less bullpen arms.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Yeah, And the other thing to consider here is at
- 10:03Speaker 1: the back end of that, you had Helsley, who threw
- 10:06Speaker 1: a really good inning, but he's coming off an arm issue.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You didn't want to pitch him a second inning, so
- 10:12Speaker 1: you got to remember that, I don't have him for
- 10:14Speaker 1: thirty pitches today. I got him for fifteen, which is
- 10:17Speaker 1: when he threw sixteen I think, and he was really good,
- 10:19Speaker 1: but because they use so many guys to get to him,
- 10:23Speaker 1: he didn't really have a late inning back up there.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And then Aiken did enough to win it, and they didn't.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Win it, so frustration in Birdland today Man times ten.
- 10:32Speaker 1: It just was is a tough day for fans to
- 10:35Speaker 1: team everyone connected with the Orioles to see that one
- 10:38Speaker 1: get away and not have a winning road trip. We
- 10:43Speaker 1: got more to do. We talk about some happier things here.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Stay with us on at Birdland Territory.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Time out for.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Daily Dingers, presented by a fan dol And you know,
- 10:59Speaker 1: guy had to home run. Say this young man, Samuel Basio,
- 11:03Speaker 1: turns out he's pretty good at twenty one today, hit
- 11:06Speaker 1: that first ball four thirty four. Guy hadn't given up
- 11:08Speaker 1: a homeer on a split all year, and he hits
- 11:10Speaker 1: one halfway to La impressive man. So he's going to
- 11:14Speaker 1: be a good pick for Daily Bingers and fans of that,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I think anytime, because he can hit one out of
- 11:19Speaker 1: any ballpark against any pitcher. So that was a special
- 11:24Speaker 1: game for him today. It's too bad at then resulting
- 11:26Speaker 1: the win, but it's got to do a lot for
- 11:27Speaker 1: his confidence.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely. I mean those were two amazing swings that
- 11:31Speaker 4: he took.
- 11:32Speaker 3: It it's clear, I think the sky reporters out if
- 11:35Speaker 3: you leave anything out over the plate, it doesn't matter
- 11:37Speaker 3: if you have zerox or base hits given up on
- 11:39Speaker 3: that pitch. Samy can hit it a long way, and
- 11:41Speaker 3: I think it's kind of it's out there now that
- 11:44Speaker 3: if you make a mistake out over the plate, he's
- 11:46Speaker 3: gonna make you pay in a big way. And I
- 11:48Speaker 3: mean that first ball was absolutely hammered. It was absolutely
- 11:51Speaker 3: no doubter. And then the next one hit a line
- 11:53Speaker 3: drive that, as Jim Palmer said, it was going to
- 11:56Speaker 3: go through the wall out there in right field. So God,
- 11:58Speaker 3: I think he was a big factor in all five
- 12:00Speaker 3: of those runs. I think it was all five RBIs
- 12:02Speaker 3: or if not five, it was four, and just got
- 12:05Speaker 3: him on the board there early, and it was looking
- 12:06Speaker 3: like I thought he was gonna have a three or
- 12:08Speaker 3: four home run game the way he was swinging the bat,
- 12:10Speaker 3: and he took a couple of really good swings his
- 12:12Speaker 3: third at that two that I feel like he just
- 12:14Speaker 3: missed a couple of those pitches. But it just goes
- 12:17Speaker 3: to show that the talent this kid has. I mean,
- 12:18Speaker 3: it's still twenty one years old and he's doing everything.
- 12:21Speaker 3: He caught a great game. He took a bunch of
- 12:23Speaker 3: balls off his mask and off the chest protector, stayed
- 12:26Speaker 3: out there and you know, that last play. It was
- 12:29Speaker 3: one of those last second decision plays and you can't
- 12:31Speaker 3: second guess when he goes out there to make that play.
- 12:33Speaker 4: He thought his best shot was to get.
- 12:35Speaker 3: The runner, and unfortunately he was too far out of
- 12:37Speaker 3: range to tag him there. But he's been doing a
- 12:40Speaker 3: phenomenal job on both sides of the plate and really
- 12:42Speaker 3: showing some of his toughness through He had.
- 12:44Speaker 4: A lot of foul balls off of himself that I.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Stayed in the game and there's really nowhere else to go.
- 12:48Speaker 3: He was standing in there the whole.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Nine well, he had the one moment where the ball
- 12:53Speaker 5: went off his head and he's waving like, don't come
- 12:56Speaker 5: out here. No, I'm good, I'm good. I'm staying in
- 12:57Speaker 5: this ball game and talking defensively Brad Trevor Rodgers over
- 13:03Speaker 5: the weekend Saturday, after the game, he was really singing
- 13:07Speaker 5: Samuel Besillo's praises after he just threw seven shutout innings
- 13:11Speaker 5: one hit ball against the Dodgers, and he credited the
- 13:14Speaker 5: twenty one year old. But he's doing a ton of
- 13:17Speaker 5: damage to fastballs. He's doing a ton of damage to
- 13:20Speaker 5: off speed pitches, and I do want to make mention
- 13:22Speaker 5: that Steve did hit his daily dinger last time out
- 13:26Speaker 5: with Taylor Wards, so I say, hey, you know, yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 5: trying to start the street.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Well, Fasio hits one, I'm not gonna take any credit
- 13:36Speaker 1: because he's gonna hit a lot of and so you know,
- 13:40Speaker 1: just keep predicting every night you're gonna run into it.
- 13:42Speaker 1: That's like he's going to run into it. But really
- 13:45Speaker 1: impressed with this kid's handling the challenges of the last
- 13:49Speaker 1: few weeks. And it seems like the manager's working hard
- 13:52Speaker 1: to repair if that's the word anything that was needed here.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Yet whenever you see him in the dugout, they're laughing,
- 13:58Speaker 1: they're talking all the time. And I said Tim on
- 14:01Speaker 1: the show, I think if the kid struggles for the
- 14:04Speaker 1: next three weeks, we're all going to point back to that.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But I don't think he's going to and I don't
- 14:09Speaker 1: think he is. So he's not tearing it up like
- 14:12Speaker 1: he was until today. But he's going to be fine.
- 14:15Speaker 1: And what a nice player to have under contract for
- 14:18Speaker 1: about eight more years.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah, having him at twenty one, get him all
- 14:22Speaker 3: the way through is twenty nine and thirty season. That's
- 14:25Speaker 3: the hope. I mean, that's kind of when you have
- 14:28Speaker 3: the Orioles and you don't have the biggest budget. These
- 14:30Speaker 3: are the guys you got to hit on. And it
- 14:31Speaker 3: just seems like he's going to be that kind of
- 14:33Speaker 3: player for it in the mainstay for a while now,
- 14:35Speaker 3: and he's showing it at a young age.
- 14:37Speaker 4: And we've even.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Seen it just in the first three months, how much
- 14:39Speaker 3: he's matureered on both sides of the ball. Everybody who's
- 14:43Speaker 3: going to hit, and like Steve, you talked about the Orioles,
- 14:46Speaker 3: were sure this kid could catch, and he's proven that.
- 14:48Speaker 3: He's showing that he can handle his staff. He's getting
- 14:50Speaker 3: praises from his pitcher, which is that's what you want
- 14:52Speaker 3: to hear on the defensive side of things. And he's
- 14:54Speaker 3: got an absolute cannon. So he's a big guy, big
- 14:57Speaker 3: target behind the plate. He keeps all the balls in
- 14:58Speaker 3: front of him and he throws base runners out. What
- 15:00Speaker 3: else more could you ask for?
- 15:02Speaker 2: Nothing?
- 15:03Speaker 1: And he flashes that smile that lights up the room.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I've seen that since I started interviewing when he was
- 15:08Speaker 1: in a ball So thrilled to see Samuel Bissio had
- 15:11Speaker 1: the game he had today. First of a few birdland,
- 15:14Speaker 1: He's going to hit a few two humbre games over
- 15:16Speaker 1: his oil career. Just happened to be number one. Happened today? Hey,

- 15:50Speaker 2: So, guys, how do they bounce back this time?
- 15:53Speaker 1: Is this bounced back number twenty or twenty five of
- 15:55Speaker 1: the year we've called for and they've had to do.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I mean, I thought they were gonna get rolled after
- 16:01Speaker 1: Friday night at Dodger Stadium. That was such a brutal,
- 16:04Speaker 1: bitter loss. I thought, oh man, how they beat the
- 16:07Speaker 1: Dodgers after this? And then they did. They gotta do
- 16:10Speaker 1: it again. At least they got an off day every
- 16:12Speaker 1: group and they're coming home. But I'll tell you, we
- 16:16Speaker 1: have heard some blue birds this year at the yard
- 16:18Speaker 1: and if this team doesn't come out playing with fire
- 16:21Speaker 1: and passion from the get on Friday Night with their
- 16:25Speaker 1: neighbors from the Natch, if the Nats come into Baltimore
- 16:27Speaker 1: and make them look bad, there are going to be
- 16:29Speaker 1: some startup fans at Oriel Park.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And it's you know, kind of referencing Mark Trumble the
- 16:35Speaker 3: other day when he was on our show. It's just
- 16:37Speaker 3: kind of it's go time there. I mean, it's it's
- 16:40Speaker 3: the middle of June. This is this is absolute go time.
- 16:43Speaker 3: This is you have to put the best line up
- 16:45Speaker 3: out there every day that you think can win games,
- 16:47Speaker 3: because it's gonna get to end of July and you're
- 16:50Speaker 3: gonna be so far out of it it's not gonna matter.
- 16:51Speaker 3: So it's just to me, it's just the sense of
- 16:54Speaker 3: urgency needs to be ticked up just a little bit.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Like you're saying, Steve, I think Friday, they just got
- 16:58Speaker 3: to come out on fire. Baseball is not that kind
- 17:01Speaker 3: of sport. But it's at a tricky stage here from
- 17:03Speaker 3: now to the All Star break where it's the season
- 17:06Speaker 3: like it's gonna be made or broke in these next
- 17:09Speaker 3: couple of weeks, and it's I know, we said this
- 17:10Speaker 3: a few times on the show. I'd say over the
- 17:12Speaker 3: last month, but I mean it's they push themselves into
- 17:15Speaker 3: the corner. There's nowhere to go except to fight their
- 17:18Speaker 3: way out of this and to show some emurgency and
- 17:20Speaker 3: show some fire and just go out there and just
- 17:22Speaker 3: play their best brand of baseball. Because if you go
- 17:25Speaker 3: into the All Star Break ten games under five hundred,
- 17:27Speaker 3: where's the season going to go? I mean we're gonna
- 17:29Speaker 3: be having episodes on here, who's gonna be getting traded,
- 17:31Speaker 3: who's gonna be getting sent here and there? And that's
- 17:33Speaker 3: not what the fans want, that's not what we want,
- 17:35Speaker 3: that's not what this team wants, nor that's what nobody deserves.
- 17:38Speaker 4: So it's just kind of got to just put the
- 17:41Speaker 4: throttle to.
- 17:42Speaker 3: The floor right now and just go out there and
- 17:43Speaker 3: just put your best foot out there every single night
- 17:46Speaker 3: and play the best bit brand of baseball you possibly can.
- 17:50Speaker 5: And if we're just looking in this immediacy of these
- 17:53Speaker 5: next two series, where obviously heading into the year, everyone
- 17:56Speaker 5: thought that the Orioles would be contenders. Vegas thought Theos
- 18:00Speaker 5: would be contenders. And you look at a series against
- 18:03Speaker 5: the Nats, you look at a series against the White
- 18:05Speaker 5: Sox and you're thinking back in March, Hey, these are layups,
- 18:08Speaker 5: but they're not. You know, baseball has been crazy, and
- 18:11Speaker 5: the Nats have been an upstart team this year, basically
- 18:15Speaker 5: in this same stretch since May twenty second. The National
- 18:19Speaker 5: starting pitching has been the best in baseball. Their bullpen's
- 18:22Speaker 5: been an issue, and we saw that the other night
- 18:24Speaker 5: against the Phillies. But we know that that lineup can
- 18:27Speaker 5: mash and it's going to be fun to see this
- 18:29Speaker 5: Orioles starting lineup and the bullpen going against that team.
- 18:33Speaker 5: But also the White Sox. Guys, a couple of years
- 18:36Speaker 5: ago they were the worst team in the history of baseball,
- 18:39Speaker 5: and now they're leading to Al Central. So it's pretty
- 18:44Speaker 5: unbelievable what both of those clubs have done. And now
- 18:48Speaker 5: obviously Captain obvious calling that both of these series mean
- 18:51Speaker 5: a ton to the Orioles. He got to find ways
- 18:55Speaker 5: to stack series wins. Guys. They got to get the
- 18:58Speaker 5: four straight wins. They got to get the four straight wins.
- 19:02Speaker 5: At some point they've they've won three straight games six times,
- 19:06Speaker 5: and then each.
- 19:06Speaker 7: Time that they've fallen, and I go back to last
- 19:10Speaker 7: night's game, guys, and these these games aren't playing on paper,
- 19:14Speaker 7: but you're you're thinking, Wow, Ryan Johnson, you have a
- 19:18Speaker 7: good matchup and Shane Bose he's been really rolling.
- 19:21Speaker 5: Then all right, we're gonna break through at this point.
- 19:23Speaker 5: But the offense was silent. They have to find ways
- 19:28Speaker 5: to stack wins, stack series wins, and especially coming back
- 19:33Speaker 5: home to Camden Yards.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I want to get back to Trey Gibson for a second,
- 19:39Speaker 1: because I'm an onabashed Trey Gibson Homer. I think fans
- 19:41Speaker 1: know that Steve loves his prospects, he loves his young players,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and I got to know this kid so well last
- 19:47Speaker 1: year on the farm, and I was so impressed by
- 19:50Speaker 1: him as a person and a pitcher that I felt
- 19:53Speaker 1: this might be one who actually has success at the
- 19:57Speaker 1: big league level. I think we might be seeing the
- 19:59Speaker 1: early sign of that. To me, it's a trite phrase
- 20:03Speaker 1: to say, but I'll say it. I think he came
- 20:06Speaker 1: of age a little bit on this road trip, two
- 20:08Speaker 1: different tough situations. You know, he did some things we
- 20:12Speaker 1: haven't seen him do really to this point. We didn't
- 20:15Speaker 1: see him for ninety seven and today did it and
- 20:17Speaker 1: what turned out to be his last inning, we haven't
- 20:19Speaker 1: seen him unleashed the death ball with such quality as
- 20:22Speaker 1: he did in Dodger Stadium.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Here's my worry.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Just as he's coming into his own Dean Kramer is
- 20:29Speaker 1: about to come back and somebody has to go. If
- 20:32Speaker 1: you're the Orioles of three years ago, the rebuilding Orioles
- 20:35Speaker 1: might have said, we need to let a young kid
- 20:37Speaker 1: just pitch and grow. The Oriols who need to win
- 20:39Speaker 1: every night, might say we can't keep him here now.
- 20:43Speaker 1: But then again, he's not a bad option to keep
- 20:46Speaker 1: here now. Someone mentioned to me today, six man, maybe
- 20:50Speaker 1: they consider doing it for a few weeks or the
- 20:52Speaker 1: break or something to see how that would look and
- 20:55Speaker 1: not take a kid who's getting better and send him back.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Well, Steven, I think there's multiple layers to that. Where
- 21:02Speaker 5: Kevin Brown brought this up on the broadcast Monday when
- 21:05Speaker 5: Bradish was pitching. Kyle Bradish this year has thrown more
- 21:09Speaker 5: innings than he's thrown the last two years combined, and
- 21:13Speaker 5: there was talks prior to the year. Kyle Bradish openly
- 21:16Speaker 5: acknowledged during spring training and innings restriction and what is
- 21:21Speaker 5: that number? How do they handle that? The All Star
- 21:24Speaker 5: breaks coming in a couple of weeks. That's always a
- 21:26Speaker 5: built in spot for teams in the past. I think
- 21:31Speaker 5: they're going to a six man. I am very confident
- 21:35Speaker 5: at some point they're going to a six man, in
- 21:37Speaker 5: part because of Kyle Bradish, but maybe in part Brad
- 21:41Speaker 5: because of Trey Gibson too.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's just kind of it's almost an unfortunate
- 21:47Speaker 3: time right now to start looking at his innings, and
- 21:49Speaker 3: you have to. It's just the nature of baseball today.
- 21:51Speaker 3: But man, is he rolling Kyle Bradish. It's just it
- 21:55Speaker 3: would stink to get him out there once every six
- 21:57Speaker 3: days when we're trying to win games, because right now
- 21:59Speaker 3: it's I mean, I put him up there with most
- 22:01Speaker 3: pictures in the big leagues. His last two starts have
- 22:02Speaker 3: just been unbelievable. But yeah, I think a six man
- 22:05Speaker 3: makes sense. And honestly, I was thinking when you Steven,
- 22:08Speaker 3: you just said that that last inning that was a
- 22:10Speaker 3: reliever inning. To me, I mean, Trey, that was ninety
- 22:13Speaker 3: seven ninety eight, that was electric stuff and the bullpen
- 22:17Speaker 3: that could use a big arm. Right now, I know
- 22:19Speaker 3: he's never really done it, but it's I just feel
- 22:21Speaker 3: like you want him to learn at the big league.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Love and I think he's gone past that point of
- 22:26Speaker 3: going back down to Triple A to get work and
- 22:28Speaker 3: continue to progress down there. There's a certain point where
- 22:31Speaker 3: certain pictures I think you just need to have them
- 22:33Speaker 3: in the big leagues, whether that's in the rotation or
- 22:35Speaker 3: in the bullpen. To me, Trey Gibson has proven himself
- 22:38Speaker 3: over these starts that he's had. It's there's something that
- 22:41Speaker 3: could be special there, and I just would hate to
- 22:43Speaker 3: lose that down on Triple A and kind of have
- 22:45Speaker 3: him bounce him back and forth and feel like you're
- 22:48Speaker 3: part of the team but not really on the team.
- 22:50Speaker 3: And it's just kind of a weird spot to be
- 22:52Speaker 3: when you're in that sixth man and kind of on
- 22:54Speaker 3: the fringe of the roster thing. And I just think
- 22:56Speaker 3: he has a lot of confidence.
- 22:57Speaker 4: He's shown some.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Big time I'm cahonis, there's no other way to say.
- 23:01Speaker 3: I mean, doctor Stateium basically nobody out. He gets out
- 23:05Speaker 3: of that with no runs. And then today I think
- 23:07Speaker 3: he had another big time visit with Frenchy when he
- 23:09Speaker 3: came out and was kind of like, hey, you got
- 23:11Speaker 3: to kind of nut up right here, and he did
- 23:14Speaker 3: and went out and was got the next guys out
- 23:16Speaker 3: and went one, two, three, and it's just there's something
- 23:18Speaker 3: there that I agree with you, Steve, that I think
- 23:20Speaker 3: that needs to be at the big league level in
- 23:23Speaker 3: some capacity.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Let's keep talking about a six man rotation because we've
- 23:29Speaker 1: got some thoughts on that.
- 23:30Speaker 2: We'll do that in a moment here on Birdland Territory.
- 23:32Speaker 8: You know why you're enjoying this minute because we're happy crats.
- 23:35Speaker 8: We're happy because we're wearing Mac Weldon.
- 23:38Speaker 9: Yes, I'm six foot five and nobody can give me
- 23:41Speaker 9: tall clothing, but mack Weldon allows me to have it,
- 23:44Speaker 9: so I don't really have to care about how I look,
- 23:47Speaker 9: and I still look good. Because I don't put a
- 23:50Speaker 9: lot of time into what I do to pick out
- 23:52Speaker 9: my clothes, Mac Weldon takes care.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Of it for me.
- 23:55Speaker 8: Classic always in style, made from the world's most comfortable
- 23:58Speaker 8: performance materials. You get sweaty, don't let unnecessary sweat spots emerge.
- 24:03Speaker 8: Mack Weldon's air Knit X fabric helps you out. Their
- 24:07Speaker 8: lightest fabric is fused with nylon mesh for maximum airflow
- 24:11Speaker 8: skip the midday wardrobe changes. The barely there feel also
- 24:15Speaker 8: keeps you feeling more dry and fresh. Don't sweat the
- 24:18Speaker 8: heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Cool as you look.
- 24:21Speaker 8: With Mack Weldon, go to Mackweldon dot com and get
- 24:23Speaker 8: twenty percent off your first order of one hundred and
- 24:25Speaker 8: twenty five bucks or more with promo code foul. That's
- 24:28Speaker 8: m A C K W E L d O N
- 24:30Speaker 8: dot com code foul.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I think you guys talked me into the six man there,
- 24:37Speaker 1: or I like also what Brad just said. Trey Gibson
- 24:40Speaker 1: stays on the roster even if he's not getting the ball,
- 24:44Speaker 1: and he gets the ball on relief and we see
- 24:45Speaker 1: what he can do there.
- 24:47Speaker 2: But the six man could work.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Keeps Trey there, limits Bradish, maybe a six man and
- 24:54Speaker 1: the off day he pitches once a week for a
- 24:56Speaker 1: couple of weeks. Then you push him on the back
- 24:58Speaker 1: end of the break. You just try to without taking
- 25:02Speaker 1: them out of the rotation or skipping them.
- 25:04Speaker 2: You help this alone.
- 25:06Speaker 1: And that might be the way they do it here,
- 25:09Speaker 1: and maybe with the all star break in just a
- 25:11Speaker 1: couple of weeks.
- 25:12Speaker 2: It's a let's look.
- 25:14Speaker 1: At it and then we'll reevaluate over the break what
- 25:17Speaker 1: we're doing here.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that it makes sense. I wasn't thinking
- 25:21Speaker 3: about six man. I knew Dean was on rehab assignment
- 25:25Speaker 3: along with Kate Povid, so you knew something was going on,
- 25:29Speaker 3: and I didn't put all this together, but it really
- 25:31Speaker 3: does kind of make sense if you, I mean, you
- 25:33Speaker 3: have to limit Bratish at some point. It's going to happen,
- 25:36Speaker 3: whether it's now, whether it's September, there's going to be
- 25:39Speaker 3: a limit somewhere. So if I think if Tray could
- 25:41Speaker 3: slide in there and kind of give, like you said, Steve,
- 25:43Speaker 3: maybe once a week to Brash, maybe once every ten days,
- 25:46Speaker 3: just to kind of limit that the inning's getting too
- 25:48Speaker 3: far up there, it seems like a viable option at
- 25:52Speaker 3: this point.
- 25:53Speaker 5: It seems like, and this is not confirmed or anything,
- 25:57Speaker 5: I'm speculating, it seems seems like Dean and Kate Povich
- 26:02Speaker 5: will be back before the All Star break. Dean Kramer,
- 26:05Speaker 5: he just had his first rehab as Sigmon and it's
- 26:07Speaker 5: been a while since he's been out, but he's for
- 26:10Speaker 5: sixty six pitches in his first outing, so that that's
- 26:13Speaker 5: a decent load right there. So maybe two three more
- 26:16Speaker 5: starts and then he could be up with the Orioles.
- 26:19Speaker 5: Kate I think was in the mid forties if I remember.
- 26:23Speaker 5: And look, let's discredit Kate Povich either, because Kate Povich
- 26:27Speaker 5: at the beginning of the year, I know it was
- 26:28Speaker 5: probably only a handful of outings, but he was an
- 26:31Speaker 5: effective arm for them, and especially a left handed arm.
- 26:34Speaker 5: And Chris Bassett he seems you know that that return
- 26:38Speaker 5: is not imminent. He hasn't even begin unthrowing yet. But look,
- 26:44Speaker 5: I hate speculating about roster spots because it's tough, but
- 26:49Speaker 5: I think Albert Suarez has been in a tough spot.
- 26:51Speaker 5: Guys where he pitched what yesterday and he was great,
- 26:55Speaker 5: He was awesome. Three innings, he had thirty pitches. He
- 26:58Speaker 5: was awesome. But that was this his first time he
- 27:00Speaker 5: pitched in ten days. And with how they've sort of
- 27:04Speaker 5: used him, he's kind of been the wear it guy, right,
- 27:08Speaker 5: like when there's been blow up starts. The last time
- 27:11Speaker 5: he pitched was when Gibson struggled against the Padres. He
- 27:14Speaker 5: came in eight four innings, saved the bullpen. Like that's
- 27:18Speaker 5: been his spot, and I don't even know how fair
- 27:20Speaker 5: that is for him, you know, just pitching that infrequently. Look,
- 27:25Speaker 5: he's on the Major League roster and that's what he wants.
- 27:27Speaker 5: But I don't know. I think that there is certainly
- 27:31Speaker 5: a way to make a six man rotation work, and
- 27:35Speaker 5: I am very convinced we will see it at some point.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I think we're making good arguments for it. We'll have
- 27:41Speaker 1: to see if the Orioles agree with our arguments here
- 27:44Speaker 1: when they tell us what they're going to do with
- 27:46Speaker 1: these guys and how they're going to try to get
- 27:48Speaker 1: them all in and get them off some rest too.
- 27:50Speaker 1: A couple more minutes to go and a few more
- 27:52Speaker 1: thoughts to pass your way on Birdland Territory.

- 28:14Speaker 2: All Right, So a couple of notes here.
- 28:16Speaker 1: This would have been the first winning road trip of
- 28:18Speaker 1: the year if they got it. They didn't four and five.
- 28:20Speaker 1: They had a couple five hundred road trips three and
- 28:23Speaker 1: three to Pittsburgh and the White Sox and then later
- 28:26Speaker 1: to Boston and Toronto. So chance for winning road trip
- 28:29Speaker 1: didn't get it. Pitchers for the Oriols this weekend home
- 28:32Speaker 1: against the Nationals. Trevor Rodgers Friday, Brandon Young Saturday, Kyle
- 28:36Speaker 1: bradish On Sunday. That's a pretty good trio there to
- 28:39Speaker 1: see if the O's can beat the Nationals. And once
- 28:42Speaker 1: again they got to get off the mat.
- 28:45Speaker 2: No other way to put it.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that team you said it before,
- 28:49Speaker 3: it's Mel said at the end of the broadcast today.
- 28:52Speaker 3: They're one of three teams who haven't had a winning
- 28:54Speaker 3: streak of more than four games, and it's just hard
- 28:57Speaker 3: to make up ground and the standings when you can't
- 28:59Speaker 3: you can't stream together at least four games in a season,
- 29:02Speaker 3: it just means you have to win so many series
- 29:04Speaker 3: in a row, you have to have so many stretches
- 29:06Speaker 3: of going ten and five to just get back to
- 29:09Speaker 3: five hundred at this point, they'd have to go twelve
- 29:11Speaker 3: and six or something like that. It's just if you
- 29:13Speaker 3: can't stream together those which I feel like it just
- 29:16Speaker 3: it's not making sense because I feel like they've had
- 29:18Speaker 3: the starting pitching, they've had the offense. It's just obviously
- 29:21Speaker 3: not going together at the same time. And it's just
- 29:23Speaker 3: it's been frustrated I don't know. It's just been a
- 29:26Speaker 3: weird season at this point. I feel like we've talked
- 29:28Speaker 3: about it at nauseum that it's just kind of what
- 29:31Speaker 3: you think is going to happen doesn't happen. And I
- 29:33Speaker 3: would just love to see this roster, with the amount
- 29:35Speaker 3: of talent and the starting pitching going right now, to
- 29:38Speaker 3: just put a street together.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Well, it's crazy, Steve, I didn't realize they haven't had
- 29:43Speaker 5: a winning road trip yet. I guess it is believable
- 29:46Speaker 5: when you look at the record, but you think of
- 29:48Speaker 5: these last two road trips. So today and brought it
- 29:51Speaker 5: up earlier, you win one of these last two games
- 29:54Speaker 5: against the Angels, you finished with a five and four
- 29:57Speaker 5: road trip. Look at their last road trip, guys, it
- 30:01Speaker 5: was Boston and Toronto and it was six games. They
- 30:05Speaker 5: started three and one. You just had to win one
- 30:07Speaker 5: of those final two games. And remember who were on
- 30:10Speaker 5: the bump. It was Bradish and then it was Shane
- 30:13Speaker 5: Bose and that was the Ernie Clement situation running outside
- 30:17Speaker 5: the base paths. So you needed to win one of
- 30:19Speaker 5: those two games to have a winning record, and you
- 30:22Speaker 5: lost both of them. It's very similar. It's very similar
- 30:26Speaker 5: with this team, and at some point you're gonna have
- 30:30Speaker 5: to go on a run to get to October. That
- 30:32Speaker 5: that's the only way. Like you're gonna have to win
- 30:35Speaker 5: four games at the point. At some point you're gonna
- 30:37Speaker 5: have to win some of these road trips. At some
- 30:40Speaker 5: point you have to find a way. It's go time,
- 30:43Speaker 5: like Trumpo's going back the Yeah.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Yep, most definitely. And you know you got the All
- 30:48Speaker 1: Star break. You have to trade deadline things are coming fast.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Decisions you're gonna have to be made. They don't have
- 30:53Speaker 1: eighty games. They got about twenty games to figure out
- 30:57Speaker 1: if this season's gonna go where they want to go,
