- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by first, like creating proven versatile
- 0:24Speaker 1: hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear for
- 0:28Speaker 1: every hunt. First like go farther, stay longer, everyone. You
- 0:36Speaker 1: might notice a slight tonal difference in what's being recorded
- 0:39Speaker 1: right now, perhaps as though it's being recorded on a
- 0:42Speaker 1: different device than normal. Well it is. That's because what
- 0:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna say right now is so important. We wanted
- 0:48Speaker 1: to stand out and fill The engineer came up with
- 0:50Speaker 1: this brilliant idea to do it on a phone. Here's
- 0:54Speaker 1: the message. Season ten, Part two of our Netflix show
- 0:57Speaker 1: Me Eater is upon us drops February worry second on Netflix.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So get ready to binge, pull up the couch to
- 1:05Speaker 1: the old tube, get your pins dialed, cock your spear guns,
- 1:09Speaker 1: whatever you gotta do to feel prepped. February second. Hot
- 1:13Speaker 1: episodes of Meat Eater on Netflix Now are regularly scheduled
- 1:18Speaker 1: podcast coming to you from the frigid as hell North Dakota.
- 1:30Speaker 1: All right, ja siemens as a um as a way
- 1:34Speaker 1: of introduction, tell what you got going on in that
- 1:35Speaker 1: bucket next to you. I'm sitting beside which you don't
- 1:39Speaker 1: know what because you live in Canada, you don't know
- 1:41Speaker 1: that that what that thing is called. Well, you told
- 1:43Speaker 1: me it's called a lug. But we kind of call
- 1:44Speaker 1: everything totes, any sort of plastic containers a tote. No
- 1:48Speaker 1: tote was a bag, well, plastic containers not all right,
- 1:52Speaker 1: we're calling it a lug. It's a tote or lug.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And we currently have a northern pike speared by Steve,
- 1:59Speaker 1: a white bass copy myself, a perch caught by Mandy
- 2:03Speaker 1: and the Walleyes. I think kind of a group effort.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But we're doing a little catching cook shar lynch later today.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So I'm pretty excited about that. Uh that that northern
- 2:12Speaker 1: um when he was frozen, he didn't give off his
- 2:15Speaker 1: northern smell. No, but now when they thought that like
- 2:19Speaker 1: the slime, it's it's amplified. It's ideal to not let
- 2:23Speaker 1: the fish freeze rock solid between you know, catching them
- 2:26Speaker 1: and cleaning them. But we we let that happen. So,
- 2:29Speaker 1: but when it's negative fifty with wind chill, it's kind
- 2:33Speaker 1: of hard to do that. Yeah, it's hard to they
- 2:35Speaker 1: freeze like from the shack of the truck. Introduce yourself
- 2:39Speaker 1: a little more j and if you want, if you want,
- 2:42Speaker 1: you can do your like you plug my plug, all right,
- 2:46Speaker 1: you can do like you damned your better plug Canadian Angle. Yep,
- 2:51Speaker 1: plug that. Uh you can plug like another thing or
- 2:57Speaker 1: two maybe, but then mainly uh the fish rye okay yep,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and then plug the battery you gave me, perfect and
- 3:04Speaker 1: you'll be all taken care of. There you go, then
- 3:06Speaker 1: I'm good. They don't even talk for the rest of
- 3:07Speaker 1: the podcast. Ah. Yeah. My name is Jay Siemens. I.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Uh I'm an ex fishing guide in Canada turned videographer
- 3:13Speaker 1: and uh I got a series on the Media to
- 3:15Speaker 1: YouTube channel called The Canadian Angle kind of a you
- 3:19Speaker 1: know angle being a videographer, but angle angling fishing words. Yeah,
- 3:24Speaker 1: there you go. Just Hadning picked up on that. I'm sure,
- 3:27Speaker 1: what the hell? So yeah, season season two just started
- 3:33Speaker 1: just like oh it all makes sense. Um yeah, season
- 3:38Speaker 1: two just started dropping and it's an ice fishing uh
- 3:41Speaker 1: ice fishing season with fits into what we're doing right now.
- 3:44Speaker 1: But uh yeah, I make YouTube videos. Um, and I
- 3:48Speaker 1: got a little got a little side house with my
- 3:50Speaker 1: buddy Josh, and we make a fish batter called Catching Cook.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So it's uh, can Americans buy it? We can buy
- 3:55Speaker 1: it online catch cook dot net. We're slowly getting to
- 3:57Speaker 1: the American retail space. But I mean I'm always eating fish,
- 4:01Speaker 1: so it's like, you know what, let's let's make something
- 4:03Speaker 1: of our own. So we've got spices to compete with
- 4:05Speaker 1: meat eater. We got some batter and uh bat some
- 4:09Speaker 1: some folding flame knives. So I'm not a batter guy. Batter, well,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I mean batter coating. I mean we got the beer batter.
- 4:14Speaker 1: This is like more of a just a flower based coating. Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 1: coating flower corn U there's flower some some corn meal
- 4:21Speaker 1: and some other secret ingredients in there. And uh, I
- 4:25Speaker 1: gifted Steve. Steve was iron up some of my gear
- 4:28Speaker 1: and I got a little it's called the power box
- 4:30Speaker 1: and it's a lithium battery and like a little hard
- 4:32Speaker 1: sided case. Should know about this. Yeah, it's great for
- 4:35Speaker 1: capping here either. No, I'm not gained that battery. You
- 4:39Speaker 1: get into free battery box. Um. Yeah, it's got a
- 4:41Speaker 1: couple of USBs A cigarette later. I'm always filming ice, fishing, camping, whatever, right,
- 4:45Speaker 1: So you know, charge your phone twenty times off at once.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But d coda a lithium power box and uh, I'm
- 4:50Speaker 1: a battery guy, little plastic box. You're a big battery guy.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Was you like plugging stuff in? My my fear is
- 4:57Speaker 1: going fishing or showing up at a shoot, my batteries
- 4:59Speaker 1: being dead, or your your life's battery died halfway through
- 5:03Speaker 1: your day. So if you're if you're an avid angler,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you kind of gotta be a battery person. Yeah, a
- 5:08Speaker 1: lot of batteries going on. Like, especially ice fishing, there's
- 5:10Speaker 1: a lot of batteries going on. A lot of like
- 5:12Speaker 1: trying to keep batteries alive in the cold, and then
- 5:16Speaker 1: if you're fishing out of the boat open water, a
- 5:19Speaker 1: lot of batteries going on, trying to keep all your
- 5:21Speaker 1: stuff round. That's made right in North Dakota. Not made,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but they're they're companies based out of Northdakota. Yeah. The
- 5:28Speaker 1: colda Lithium cool name. Yeah, you start a rock band
- 5:31Speaker 1: called The colda Lithium, We're gonna get back to seth
- 5:34Speaker 1: big time. A lot of boat stuff. We got to
- 5:36Speaker 1: talk about a lot of boat dealings. Well, I might
- 5:39Speaker 1: be selling I might be selling Seth my boat. Actually
- 5:42Speaker 1: we're doing some dealings off. Yeah, we'll roll it into
- 5:47Speaker 1: the boat talk. And then we got to talk about
- 5:49Speaker 1: this little project we got called Seth side Hustle. Yeah,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but this is gonna get me in a lot of
- 5:53Speaker 1: trouble with Tracy because she doesn't like it when we
- 5:56Speaker 1: preview uh to start promoting things that don't yet this
- 6:00Speaker 1: then wind up for some reason being impossible to do.
- 6:04Speaker 1: But I just can't see it. I can't foresee this
- 6:06Speaker 1: being impossible. Seth Little Hustle. Yeah, it's gonna be called
- 6:10Speaker 1: there'll be a drop down. If you go to the
- 6:12Speaker 1: meteor dot com you'll find a little drop down it
- 6:14Speaker 1: says Seth Little Hustle. Yep, man, introduce yourself now, whatever
- 6:19Speaker 1: aspects of yourself, because there's sort of like you have
- 6:21Speaker 1: like a dual. You have a dual, you have a
- 6:23Speaker 1: dual existence. I do can you do? Can you talk
- 6:26Speaker 1: about both the duels? Yeah? Heiken So by day. For
- 6:30Speaker 1: the last twenty one years, I am a biologist. I've
- 6:33Speaker 1: worked for the State of Minnesota and multiple different divisions
- 6:36Speaker 1: and capacities. I love my job. When I'm not at
- 6:40Speaker 1: that job, I do wear multiple hats. Um I'm an
- 6:44Speaker 1: abbot angler. I'm also a tournament angler. So I fish
- 6:47Speaker 1: year round a fish about thirty derbuts a year, multiple species.
- 6:51Speaker 1: UM I used angle, I guide UH. I co host
- 6:55Speaker 1: a weekly radio show. I've had a co host a
- 6:57Speaker 1: TV show for the last seven years and they donate
- 7:00Speaker 1: about two year two nonprofits and bets groups. So m
- 7:06Speaker 1: tell about your last name. Urick. Okay, I had. I
- 7:13Speaker 1: want people to know I have nothing to gain in
- 7:14Speaker 1: this transaction. I'm about ready to layout nothing to gain.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I had a Jackson kayak big tuna, Yes, a tandem
- 7:27Speaker 1: sit on top fishing kayak for rough as water, and
- 7:31Speaker 1: we had caught a lot of fish out of this thing.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I got to where I was, I got to live
- 7:39Speaker 1: in an area where just wasn't using it as much
- 7:42Speaker 1: because just local circumstances and which wasn't applicable to where
- 7:47Speaker 1: I was. And UH gave it a seth to use
- 7:53Speaker 1: and you use it a couple of times, us a lot,
- 7:55Speaker 1: use it a lot. But then he went on to
- 7:57Speaker 1: bigger than you just and you got you got like
- 7:59Speaker 1: all the olates and I used that. I used that
- 8:03Speaker 1: a lot. Kelsey and I would use it floating several
- 8:06Speaker 1: rivers around Montana. But it's not like a great river,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you know, it's open water. It's an open water boat.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So we end up just getting an old town canoe.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And then, um, we didn't need the sweet boat the
- 8:18Speaker 1: kayak anymore. It's got like chairs in it. It's got
- 8:21Speaker 1: a perforated at live well it's not aerated, but you
- 8:23Speaker 1: can put fish in there and just as you move around,
- 8:26Speaker 1: it circulates water, keeps them alive. Real good. I used
- 8:28Speaker 1: to use that thing all the time. Probably not tournament ready, no,
- 8:32Speaker 1: not tournament ready. No. It's got an anchor system that
- 8:35Speaker 1: I personally rigged up. Sweet anchor system. Um, it's got everything.
- 8:40Speaker 1: So you go look for yourself what a Jackson kayak
- 8:43Speaker 1: big Tune is worth. I don't know what what the hell
- 8:44Speaker 1: they're worth. Worth a lot of money, Yeah, it's like
- 8:46Speaker 1: a two grand to think so Ridge Pounder. We kind
- 8:50Speaker 1: of pure pressured Rich Pounder in buying it. Yep, for
- 8:55Speaker 1: I don't want to get into sums, but for a
- 8:56Speaker 1: fraction of its value. Because he had some cockamamie plan
- 9:02Speaker 1: by which he was gonna come retrieve it and bring
- 9:06Speaker 1: it back to California with him so he could become
- 9:10Speaker 1: a surf perch master. Sorry, it's in bows matter. Where
- 9:13Speaker 1: is it? It's it's it. Yeah, it's at my house
- 9:16Speaker 1: in three So now the word things stand now. I
- 9:20Speaker 1: was telling christ the all day and we were sitting
- 9:22Speaker 1: in shanny Um. I won off this deal because even
- 9:29Speaker 1: though I gave it the Seth, once Seth sold it
- 9:32Speaker 1: to Chris, I kept half that money just because the
- 9:36Speaker 1: felt that that was fair. And I don't know if
- 9:38Speaker 1: you remember, but you gave me that kayak because I
- 9:42Speaker 1: helped you hang that big gass mirror in your house
- 9:46Speaker 1: as soon as you walk in your door. Yeah, he
- 9:49Speaker 1: got He got that too. So I got my mirror
- 9:51Speaker 1: hung up. So here's all I want. I got my
- 9:54Speaker 1: mirror hung up. I got half the very very modest
- 9:58Speaker 1: sale price. Yep, Seth got half the mode of sale price.
- 10:04Speaker 1: But now he's getting bones. He's had to move it
- 10:06Speaker 1: around a whole bunch. But here's the big winner and
- 10:08Speaker 1: this whole thing right now as stands is, Dirt Smith
- 10:13Speaker 1: is gonna come take it, not pay anybody anything, and
- 10:17Speaker 1: he's gonna come take it. And how's it until Ridge
- 10:22Speaker 1: comes in. Yeah, he's gonna be the caretaker of it.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So we're all of us, all involved parties were in
- 10:28Speaker 1: a shandy the other day and I was telling Chris,
- 10:30Speaker 1: just like you can't have a shandy full of whiners,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you can't have a shandy full of winners. Someone's got
- 10:36Speaker 1: to lose, and he's the loser. He's losing. He bought it,
- 10:40Speaker 1: but he can't get it. So the reason I'm bringing
- 10:42Speaker 1: this up to listeners is if someone you have to
- 10:46Speaker 1: come get it out of Seth yard. Yeah, if it
- 10:48Speaker 1: works out, come get in my yard. How what do
- 10:51Speaker 1: they have to Let's make it a deal. They gotta
- 10:53Speaker 1: give you and then you're gonna split the money with
- 10:56Speaker 1: Ridge or no, yeah, you'd it with him. You wouldn't
- 11:00Speaker 1: just keep the money. They're like bailing Ridge out. We're
- 11:05Speaker 1: basically doing all this work for Chris and he's not
- 11:07Speaker 1: doing ship. So you come and give you the listener sending.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Uh you know where they should send it because you're
- 11:14Speaker 1: in there anyway. Where do you want the emails to go?
- 11:18Speaker 1: Info at Seth Side Hustle dot com. No, because this
- 11:21Speaker 1: is nothing to do with Seth Side House, the project,
- 11:27Speaker 1: the Seth Little Hustle. This is Seth Little Side Hustle. Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 1: name a price and name how they're supposed to get
- 11:35Speaker 1: ahold of you? That should they d M you? Yeah?
- 11:39Speaker 1: I probably just a d M to my Instagram. Tell
- 11:41Speaker 1: him what it is at signs Underscore West. Um. So
- 11:45Speaker 1: here's social media coming in again. Send me DM and
- 11:50Speaker 1: what was I forget? The price? We were? We doesn't matter.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Just just throw one out there. Thousand bucks, thousand bucks.
- 11:58Speaker 1: It's like it's mint condition, mint condition, big Tuna, Jackson Kayak,
- 12:05Speaker 1: phenomenal boat in sets yard. Thousand bucks. Here's what happens
- 12:09Speaker 1: with that thousand bucks? Ridge Pounder gets his money back. Yeah,
- 12:15Speaker 1: then set the sides. Whether he just hoards the rest
- 12:17Speaker 1: for himself or splits the profits with him, it's up
- 12:22Speaker 1: seth splits the profits with Chris. Yeah, no, I'm keeping it.
- 12:26Speaker 1: You're just gonna give his money. You're just giving his
- 12:28Speaker 1: money back. You're gonna refund it. Yeah, I'll refund his money,
- 12:31Speaker 1: but then you're keeping it. But yeah, the rest I'm
- 12:33Speaker 1: keeping because that's that's Chris is. That's what Chris owes
- 12:36Speaker 1: me for storage, moving, for moving it, and for doing
- 12:40Speaker 1: this whole transaction. Okay, that's fair. Here's the thing. You
- 12:45Speaker 1: gotta come pick some bitch up though, we're not like
- 12:47Speaker 1: sets not involved. Seth would be like it's in the yard,
- 12:50Speaker 1: come get it and you can keep my sweet anchor. Yep,
- 12:54Speaker 1: it's a fishy boat. It's seen a lot of fish. Yeah,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I fished it all. My kids have fished it, my
- 13:01Speaker 1: mos fished it. A lot of people fish that boats
- 13:04Speaker 1: like doss boat. I feel I was. I was one
- 13:06Speaker 1: time out in the middle of Canyon Ferry. There's a
- 13:08Speaker 1: bunch of walleye boats out there, and I was like, well,
- 13:11Speaker 1: the bite must be on out there. Didn't have my
- 13:14Speaker 1: boat that I have now, so I just Kelsey and
- 13:16Speaker 1: I paddled out there and we didn't catch any walleye.
- 13:20Speaker 1: But we tell him that, say like, say like we
- 13:23Speaker 1: slew we outfished all the balleye boats, say something like
- 13:25Speaker 1: that boat, Well, it's not the boat's problem. He outfished all.
- 13:30Speaker 1: What I'm saying. What I'm saying is the boat is
- 13:32Speaker 1: capable to get out there with all the big wallete
- 13:35Speaker 1: I just wanted to be like a different like the
- 13:38Speaker 1: way the story was going, I was expecting to be
- 13:41Speaker 1: that you slay well, we can say that, yeah, okay,
- 13:47Speaker 1: lay out the other boat issue you guys got, But
- 13:50Speaker 1: let me, let me, let me tee it up. Okay,
- 13:52Speaker 1: it up. We've talked extensively over the last year about
- 13:54Speaker 1: how uh seth and in Chester the Midwestern are gonna
- 14:00Speaker 1: going to the Walleye Tournament. Yes, and we're like sponsoring
- 14:05Speaker 1: the Walleye. They're making a show about them. We're gonna
- 14:09Speaker 1: make a show about them just winning Montana. So doing
- 14:16Speaker 1: the Montana leg of the Walleye Tour. Correct, it's it's
- 14:20Speaker 1: the Montana. It's like the Montana Circuit, Montana Wall Eyes
- 14:24Speaker 1: Unlimited doing the Montana competing in the Montana Circuit. When
- 14:31Speaker 1: you get after you do that way in are you
- 14:32Speaker 1: allowed to keep those fish and eat them? Or you
- 14:34Speaker 1: have to go dump back in the lake? You gotta
- 14:35Speaker 1: release the well this this year it's photo. It's picture
- 14:39Speaker 1: and release. Okay, mildly less enthusiastic about this whole thing,
- 14:45Speaker 1: But what do you mean that's fine? Um? I just
- 14:51Speaker 1: thought you could be out there. I thought you could
- 14:52Speaker 1: have a big old like one of like Jay's fish fry, batter,
- 14:55Speaker 1: catch and cook big like you know race cars have
- 14:58Speaker 1: like tied or whatever. Ye how much to wrap your boat?
- 15:01Speaker 1: How you both gonna be wrapped? You know what? Maybe
- 15:04Speaker 1: catch a cook is gonna sponsor you guys, because they're
- 15:07Speaker 1: gonna let them all go. Well, they'll probably kill one
- 15:10Speaker 1: accidentally along the way, so we can pre fish. We
- 15:12Speaker 1: keep a couple, you know. Okay, let's go to wrap it.
- 15:15Speaker 1: We might not even need a boat sponsorship. We're just
- 15:16Speaker 1: gonna buy you a boat, catch and cook wrap there
- 15:21Speaker 1: the little jack a little raising jackets and stuff to say,
- 15:23Speaker 1: catching cookoun be sweet? That would be sweet and be
- 15:25Speaker 1: good for ja. So you're gonna do this thing. We're
- 15:29Speaker 1: gonna make a show. We're gonna making a YouTube series, right,
- 15:32Speaker 1: help me out? Yeah, to pick it up? Sell me up?
- 15:34Speaker 1: How many don't don't end up like you did the
- 15:36Speaker 1: kayak story that ended? Yeah, So it's it's four stops.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Unfortunately one of them is on the day I get
- 15:44Speaker 1: married this year, so you're gonna have to leave the
- 15:47Speaker 1: wedding early. We we're only doing three. We're doing three
- 15:50Speaker 1: of the four, derby is what you only need to
- 15:52Speaker 1: do three of the four to angler the year? Yeah,
- 15:55Speaker 1: that's what you guys are gonna do. So and so
- 15:58Speaker 1: and how did it wind up being that you got
- 16:00Speaker 1: scheduled to get married? Just just bad coincidence, it's too
- 16:04Speaker 1: late to move the wedding. Yeah. Yeah, do you know
- 16:08Speaker 1: I'm the I'm going to be the preacher at Seth wedding.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Can I talk about that? Yeah, go for it. I'm
- 16:12Speaker 1: gonna be the preacher at Seth wedding. What's the date
- 16:14Speaker 1: for that? J Do you have to do an online
- 16:18Speaker 1: like certification? I gotta look into that. I might check
- 16:21Speaker 1: it right now, but cost fifteen dollars. And you're ready
- 16:26Speaker 1: to go back to the wally. So we I have
- 16:31Speaker 1: a I got a sixteen and a half foot It's
- 16:34Speaker 1: a sweet boat Sylvan. But if anybody is familiar with
- 16:40Speaker 1: Fort Pack, and is that one of the locations one
- 16:44Speaker 1: of the locations that I'm really excited about Stop number one.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It's big and Seth and I could be out there
- 16:50Speaker 1: in my little sixteen and a half footer and and
- 16:52Speaker 1: I have a sixteen and foot sixteen and a half
- 16:54Speaker 1: foot cress liner that is not capable. Yeah you guys
- 16:59Speaker 1: are you guys are boat poor? Underbot your ambition rich
- 17:03Speaker 1: yet boat poor? The wind could come up and we
- 17:06Speaker 1: could be um. It would be like the Trump Fitzgerald yea,
- 17:11Speaker 1: the legend lives on. It would be a song written
- 17:14Speaker 1: about Lake Michigan steams like young man's dreams. It's islands
- 17:18Speaker 1: and Bazar for sportsmen. Uh, these boys need a boat.
- 17:23Speaker 1: We need a boat. If I owned a boat company,
- 17:28Speaker 1: pert just per means just me speaking. If I owned
- 17:30Speaker 1: a boat company and I was like, and I was
- 17:32Speaker 1: sitting there with my marketing budget ship right, and I
- 17:35Speaker 1: was like, what am I gonna do this year for
- 17:36Speaker 1: my marketing budget? And I'm like on Instagram checking out, like, Oh,
- 17:40Speaker 1: here's a fishing influence or whatever. And I caught wind
- 17:43Speaker 1: of the fact that Seth and Chester are doing uh
- 17:49Speaker 1: meat Eater YouTube series about their quest to become Angler
- 17:54Speaker 1: of the Year. High production value in the boat was
- 18:01Speaker 1: gonna be like the star like you want to talk
- 18:03Speaker 1: about impressions, the boats like the main thing you want
- 18:07Speaker 1: to talk about impressions. I'm just saying if I owned
- 18:10Speaker 1: the boat company, I would be hitting sets d M
- 18:14Speaker 1: or go to What's yours musky Chat, go to muskie
- 18:17Speaker 1: Chat or just contact at the mediator dot com, and
- 18:21Speaker 1: I would be like dropping a lot of I would
- 18:24Speaker 1: be calling people. How do they put it? Jay, you
- 18:26Speaker 1: had to happen to you one time because the boat
- 18:28Speaker 1: shortages I'm trying to think with the well, it just
- 18:34Speaker 1: they they shuffle, Yeah, things move around. Jay's watching his
- 18:39Speaker 1: ass right now because he doesn't want jameson I get
- 18:44Speaker 1: implicated in any of this. I would be sitting there
- 18:47Speaker 1: looking and I'd be like, man, I'm gonna get those
- 18:49Speaker 1: boys a Walleye boat. That's right, even though you gotta
- 18:54Speaker 1: understand it's gonna be raft with catching cook big a
- 18:57Speaker 1: lotcraft guy Manny's Manny's a lenon or also we both
- 19:00Speaker 1: kind of. I mean, I think it's you got to
- 19:02Speaker 1: be fishing in the limit craft. But hey, I like,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I don't discriminate at this point. Beggars can't be choosers. Ye,
- 19:11Speaker 1: A boat, a Walleye boat company needs to come in
- 19:14Speaker 1: and help these boys out so they can get out
- 19:16Speaker 1: there and not be out in them little boats of theirs. Now,
- 19:18Speaker 1: what if the Walleye Boat Company came and said you
- 19:21Speaker 1: can use this boat for that? Then you got to
- 19:23Speaker 1: give it back. It's yeah, see it's better nothing. But
- 19:30Speaker 1: if we could be you know, going to the Elite
- 19:33Speaker 1: series Bess too. No, I'm just kidding. Let me another thing.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Let me lay out an earth thing for you. What
- 19:40Speaker 1: I think would have to happen. Just so you know,
- 19:42Speaker 1: what I think would have to happen is I think
- 19:43Speaker 1: we would have to do it like this. They'd probably
- 19:47Speaker 1: wind up having to they'd probably have to give the
- 19:49Speaker 1: boat to me either. Yes, but would be like your
- 19:53Speaker 1: guy's boat to use and take care of. And I
- 19:55Speaker 1: would make it be that people had to come ask
- 19:57Speaker 1: you permission to use it. But in the future, how
- 20:01Speaker 1: would you guys divide the boat up? Would you fight
- 20:04Speaker 1: over it? Would you wrestle over eight percent of the
- 20:09Speaker 1: time when we're fishing, we're together, so you don't foresee
- 20:13Speaker 1: it being a big issue. You could you feel that
- 20:15Speaker 1: you two could effectively co own a boat? Yeah, I'm
- 20:19Speaker 1: pretty easy going. Yeah, I'd let Seth use it whenever.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Well we share, we've Yeah, you know, what were you
- 20:27Speaker 1: getting two problems when you call own stuff and I've
- 20:29Speaker 1: never had because I own I call owned the fish act.
- 20:31Speaker 1: We never had the issue someone says, I think we
- 20:34Speaker 1: were doing for a new boat, and we got we're
- 20:36Speaker 1: gonna buy a new boat, and someone says, like, I
- 20:38Speaker 1: don't want to do that. Yeah, you know, we've never
- 20:43Speaker 1: had that problem. We've always unanimously agreed on like priorities,
- 20:46Speaker 1: but you could have a situation where one he's like,
- 20:48Speaker 1: I want to redo the electronics package. Everyone's like, man,
- 20:50Speaker 1: I can't afford I don't want to do that. So
- 20:52Speaker 1: they're like, well, I'm gonna go do it anyway, and
- 20:54Speaker 1: then you then now you have bitterness. Yeah, I could
- 20:58Speaker 1: see this boat really been you two apart. I can't
- 21:03Speaker 1: if it ever came to that, I'd be like, you
- 21:04Speaker 1: know what, you can have that boat. Oh yeah, have
- 21:09Speaker 1: you have you have you guys fish tournaments before? Is
- 21:12Speaker 1: this gonna be like the first tournaments into the full tour.
- 21:15Speaker 1: It's really cute. We fished out when other people were
- 21:18Speaker 1: this is the cutest thing in the world. It's the
- 21:22Speaker 1: cutest thing in the world. There's a tournament going on,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and they went and fished together that day just to
- 21:27Speaker 1: see how they could you wage your own fish that
- 21:29Speaker 1: day and saw you would have stacked up if you
- 21:31Speaker 1: paid the entry. Yeah. If we well, we fished and
- 21:35Speaker 1: then we went and looked at the board and we
- 21:37Speaker 1: would have done very well. Yeah. So if you if
- 21:43Speaker 1: you have a boat company and you want to get
- 21:44Speaker 1: on board with some winners and get some high profile exposure.
- 21:51Speaker 1: These boys need a Walleye boat. Here's another thing. If
- 21:55Speaker 1: any green lip dude, this is happening, I was in
- 21:58Speaker 1: on the meeting, any other winnings. We're not keeping them.
- 22:01Speaker 1: We're not taking that putting it in our pocket, um,
- 22:05Speaker 1: which you know would be nice putting it. We're actually
- 22:12Speaker 1: we're actually, oh my god, we're not doing that. Definitely
- 22:19Speaker 1: not doing that, Steve. We're gonna put it back towards
- 22:22Speaker 1: um like access like a boat ramp improvements, UM, fish
- 22:27Speaker 1: cleaning station on. However, Seth and I, you know some
- 22:33Speaker 1: project that had that's related to the bodies of water
- 22:35Speaker 1: where you guys right, So some project related to access enhancement,
- 22:41Speaker 1: M ramp improvements like fish clean whatever, whatever the you know,
- 22:45Speaker 1: whatever whatever date needs, whatever whoever needs. We had a
- 22:48Speaker 1: we had a guy right into us saying that there
- 22:51Speaker 1: he's a guy who owns a company that makes those
- 22:54Speaker 1: like prefab concrete outhouses. Because we talked about like if
- 23:00Speaker 1: boat ramp needs a shifter or something, be like something
- 23:03Speaker 1: we'd invest in. That guy was like, let me know,
- 23:07Speaker 1: we'd be sponsored by catching cook and boat ramp ship.
- 23:13Speaker 1: So now you lost half to wrap. Yeah, you don't
- 23:16Speaker 1: even get the port side is gonna be catching cooked side.
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's gonna be boat ramp shitters. U let me let
- 23:25Speaker 1: me review this for boat manufacturers. Here's what you're getting,
- 23:28Speaker 1: massive impressions when the show comes out. Um, you're helping
- 23:33Speaker 1: access if if they win some some loot, you get that.
- 23:37Speaker 1: You're tied to that generous gesture because they're not pocketing
- 23:40Speaker 1: any loot. Um, I can tell you one day you
- 23:44Speaker 1: can use the boat if you want. You can just
- 23:46Speaker 1: borrow it back on seth wedding day. He's not gonna
- 23:49Speaker 1: be using it. Help so you can do a Walleye trip.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Boats already up in Montana. Do a walleye trip June.
- 23:55Speaker 1: No problems, no conflicts. Um, they ain't come fish with
- 23:59Speaker 1: us any time. They throw this in full. This in
- 24:02Speaker 1: here's another thing, and this has a lot of value.
- 24:05Speaker 1: We will talk about that boat on this show ten times.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Oh wow, and enormous valt on my personal instagram. How
- 24:14Speaker 1: many times that's in my whole instagram will just be
- 24:18Speaker 1: around that boat. Okay, I'm just I'm just lending you.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I can't do I'm just lending my boat. I want
- 24:26Speaker 1: to fill to install that astonishment with We will spend
- 24:29Speaker 1: so much time on that boat. We'd probably get like
- 24:37Speaker 1: a WiFi hotspot on that boat and just work on
- 24:39Speaker 1: the boat. I spend a certain amount of time in
- 24:42Speaker 1: my boat that's not as much as I like because
- 24:45Speaker 1: of windy days. I can't get out there on windy days. Man.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I think the boat manufacturers gonna beating your door down, Dude.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I think we're just gonna cut this out and I'm
- 24:54Speaker 1: just giving you my boat. That's all. That's all compelling.
- 24:57Speaker 1: This whole thing is. Yeah, I see, I see the value.
- 25:00Speaker 1: We sell a lot of catching covers. Okay, you're ready
- 25:05Speaker 1: to move on that. That covers boat news. Now, people
- 25:08Speaker 1: are probably so excited about the wallet boat they forgot
- 25:10Speaker 1: about the big tune of kayak. But remember, uh vaccinating
- 25:15Speaker 1: zoo animals. Wow, this has been going on for quite
- 25:20Speaker 1: a while. But I want to cover like the transition,
- 25:23Speaker 1: you know, yeah, you like the transition. There had transitions
- 25:29Speaker 1: being Walleye boats vaccinating zoo animals. This caught my eye.
- 25:34Speaker 1: They were a picture of where they're fixing the vaccinate
- 25:40Speaker 1: some stuff for COVID. The feending that I was reading
- 25:43Speaker 1: an article where the Phoenix Arizona Zoo is the latest
- 25:46Speaker 1: to vaccinate animals that are likely to get COVID because
- 25:51Speaker 1: of close contact with humans. I didn't know this. Um
- 25:57Speaker 1: Nebraska's Lincoln Children's Zoo, they lost three snow leopards to COVID.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Really yeah, so they worked up It was this outfit
- 26:09Speaker 1: that worked up this uh. Zotis Zodis, a global animal
- 26:14Speaker 1: health company based in New Jersey, worked up some kind
- 26:19Speaker 1: of vaccine, donated doses for the zoos, and they got
- 26:24Speaker 1: authorized emergency use for endangered species. So they've been vaccinating um,
- 26:32Speaker 1: Sumatran tigers, jaguars, African lions. Hit him with a dark gun.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Huh for those unvaccinated folks, a better watch out sometimes people,
- 26:45Speaker 1: the government's just gonna come over dark. Yeah, that's a
- 26:49Speaker 1: good conspiracy to start. I worked up another conspiracy. Young
- 26:53Speaker 1: gonna start, Like there's kind of a fun one to
- 26:56Speaker 1: start about how to stay warm and cold weather, um,
- 26:58Speaker 1: like a physiology. And then we could work one up
- 27:02Speaker 1: that we heard, like all those black helicopters that we're
- 27:04Speaker 1: gonna do like you know, New World Order, they're now
- 27:07Speaker 1: just using them to vax people who don't who won't
- 27:09Speaker 1: get vaxed with tranked darts. That's what happened to Chester's
- 27:13Speaker 1: cousin All right Chester. Um they've been did I say
- 27:19Speaker 1: African lions with it? With a dart um born Ian orangutangs,
- 27:24Speaker 1: Emperor tamarins. They're hitting the fruit bats. That seems that
- 27:29Speaker 1: makes sense to me, Gypsian fruit bats, Armadilla's sloths. That
- 27:34Speaker 1: must be a pretty tiny dose in a bat. Yeah,
- 27:38Speaker 1: how do you think who is being interesting? Who calculates that? Out?
- 27:42Speaker 1: At that zoo, the Phoenix Arizona Zoo, they've they've they've
- 27:47Speaker 1: they've needled seventy five animals. I'm gonna put this on
- 27:51Speaker 1: my Instagram, a picture of a jaguars doing and I
- 27:54Speaker 1: had the comment on as what I'm gonna put on
- 27:57Speaker 1: Instagram is a comment about I could picture it calls
- 28:00Speaker 1: using creating some real soul searching. At Peter people for
- 28:07Speaker 1: the ethical treatment of animals, they probably will have to
- 28:10Speaker 1: have a meeting about whether they like vehemently oppose or
- 28:14Speaker 1: vehemently support because they're down on zoos anyway, they're down
- 28:20Speaker 1: on pet ownership, right, So how do they feel like
- 28:27Speaker 1: this animal has no say? Like they don't like um
- 28:30Speaker 1: sexual mutilation of animals when you when you cut their
- 28:32Speaker 1: nuts off and stuff. Maybe they do. I don't know,
- 28:34Speaker 1: but um, yeah, like are they how do you spend
- 28:40Speaker 1: that in that org? Good question, like are they like
- 28:45Speaker 1: pissed or do they like it? Because you one could argue,
- 28:48Speaker 1: one could say, hey, man, it's not the jaguar's fault
- 28:51Speaker 1: that he's in the zoo. That sucks for him. They
- 28:52Speaker 1: shouldn't be able to do that. But since he is there,
- 28:55Speaker 1: the least you can do is keep him from dying
- 28:57Speaker 1: catching COVID. Like that's a pro coach or would be.
- 29:01Speaker 1: The other approach would be, this is yet another example
- 29:04Speaker 1: of us forcing our will on animals without there consent,
- 29:12Speaker 1: you know, consent. Yeah, there are some internal meetings about that.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I feel like they should dial me in for those meetings.
- 29:19Speaker 1: I'd be like, listen, man, I know you and I
- 29:20Speaker 1: got our differences, but I'm very interested in this one
- 29:23Speaker 1: and we should have we I'd like to help hash
- 29:26Speaker 1: this one out. Yeah, that's crazy. After we did our episode,
- 29:33Speaker 1: which one you guys can remember who was on these shows?
- 29:35Speaker 1: Were you guys there for Doug and Halflefinger? No, we
- 29:38Speaker 1: were there with no theat it was called talking about
- 29:44Speaker 1: things that are not sexy to talk about. That was
- 29:47Speaker 1: Spencer and who else was there? Not well in the
- 29:53Speaker 1: in the episode talking about things that are not sexy
- 29:55Speaker 1: to talk about. I talked about Doug send me mean
- 29:59Speaker 1: text Messa just and trying to start a fight with
- 30:02Speaker 1: me over text, and Doug said he wasn't trying to
- 30:05Speaker 1: be mean, it's just his text messages sometimes seemed mean,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and he says he wished he He said he needs
- 30:11Speaker 1: to be better about moderating his tone on text messages. Help. Yeah,
- 30:17Speaker 1: but I refuse to use emojis. There's no way in
- 30:21Speaker 1: the world. Didn't you say thumbs up? Was like he
- 30:26Speaker 1: didn't carry your piste off Like I tried the thumbs
- 30:29Speaker 1: up one time and felt so bad I could barely
- 30:31Speaker 1: sleep that night. I will not. I don't when I text,
- 30:36Speaker 1: I don't use abbreviations. I spelled everything out. I punctuate
- 30:40Speaker 1: everything basically. If you imagine, my texts are the opposite
- 30:46Speaker 1: of Trump's tweets. I don't like everything is like perfect
- 30:51Speaker 1: in my text mess I try to make it perfectly
- 30:53Speaker 1: my text messages. I don't use emojis, but when I
- 30:56Speaker 1: get him. But my daughter knows I hate emojis, so
- 30:58Speaker 1: she'll now and then get on her mom's phone and
- 31:00Speaker 1: just send me like five page streams of of emojis. Um,
- 31:09Speaker 1: you gotta, I mean, let me tell you go ahead.
- 31:11Speaker 1: No like voice you seem like the type of guy
- 31:13Speaker 1: that do voice messages, busy guy. Do that? Aith that
- 31:17Speaker 1: because I'm afraid there'd be a type of in it. No, no, no,
- 31:19Speaker 1: but like straight straight voice like not even not even
- 31:22Speaker 1: voice the tax just like voice memos. No, I don't
- 31:24Speaker 1: do this, do that? No, you know what's funny about Um,
- 31:28Speaker 1: here's another story about that. Okay, put this one on hold.
- 31:31Speaker 1: About Doug, I'm gonna tell another Dog story. We laughed
- 31:35Speaker 1: for like two years about this because Doug was doing
- 31:40Speaker 1: there's some argument with Doug drn, I can't remember what
- 31:42Speaker 1: it was. And Dog was doing like talking into the text,
- 31:46Speaker 1: and Doug was trying to settle a disagreement with someone,
- 31:50Speaker 1: saying that he would arm wrestle them for it. But
- 31:55Speaker 1: the way his voicing put down is that he was
- 31:57Speaker 1: gonna farm wrestle them for it. And we had a
- 31:59Speaker 1: lot laughs about what exactly farm wrestling. Dog and Mom
- 32:06Speaker 1: like what farm wrestling means, and we came up with
- 32:10Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of definitions about what a
- 32:12Speaker 1: farm wrestling match might look like. For Doug like, never
- 32:15Speaker 1: go to dogs for farm wrestling. Um. There's an app, folks,
- 32:20Speaker 1: folks you know about this. It's called Our Family Okay,
- 32:24Speaker 1: our Family Wizard Communication app. A guy wrote in, I
- 32:29Speaker 1: deal with this problem of tonality and text messages. I
- 32:33Speaker 1: deal with this problem all the time in the context
- 32:35Speaker 1: of parents who can't seem to communicate nicely with one another.
- 32:40Speaker 1: This is divorced parents in dealing about their kids, so
- 32:45Speaker 1: divorced parents taking care of kids. I deal with this
- 32:48Speaker 1: problem all the time in the context of parents who
- 32:50Speaker 1: can't seem to communicate nicely with one another, and the
- 32:53Speaker 1: court will often have them use the Our Family Wizard
- 32:58Speaker 1: communication app with the tone meter feature turned on Our
- 33:05Speaker 1: Family Wizard dot com slash Knowledge, Dash Center, Slash tips,
- 33:10Speaker 1: Dash Tricks, slash Parents, Dash Website, slash tone meter. It'll
- 33:15Speaker 1: be in the notes. You got that written now, and
- 33:18Speaker 1: you can get that out analyze your tone with tone meter.
- 33:24Speaker 1: They make suggestions about how to make it seem nicer.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Watch this transition correction about gunshot wounds and tampons. Okay,
- 33:35Speaker 1: we're talking about we covered pretty heavily. Uh. People writing
- 33:42Speaker 1: in about plugging up gunshot wounds of tampons. Apparently in
- 33:47Speaker 1: the medical community this is frowned upon first responders. Military
- 33:52Speaker 1: people are implored not to do this. This fellaw that
- 33:57Speaker 1: rolled in goes. It is worrying that more people are
- 34:00Speaker 1: talking about the improper in this case use of a
- 34:04Speaker 1: tampon to control massive bleeding. It can be both dangerous
- 34:07Speaker 1: due to debris for getting to breas further into the wounds,
- 34:11Speaker 1: but in a prehospital environment it could be fatal. Tampons
- 34:17Speaker 1: are not sterile? How is that true? Tampons are not sterile?
- 34:20Speaker 1: In an article in the Emergency Medicine Journal highlights that
- 34:23Speaker 1: when it comes to life threatening bleeding, a tampon cannot
- 34:26Speaker 1: provide the surface area or the pressure required to control
- 34:30Speaker 1: massive bleeding. Tampons absorbed blood, they do not provide any
- 34:34Speaker 1: hemostatic assistance. The average tampon can absorb nine million leaders
- 34:40Speaker 1: of blood or about two teaspoons. Life threatening bleeding occurs
- 34:43Speaker 1: when there is a greater than fifteen hundred million leaders
- 34:47Speaker 1: of blood. Once it absorbs its max, wouldn't it just
- 34:51Speaker 1: still keep that whole plug now? Apparently not so. Just
- 34:55Speaker 1: a tourniquet or hemostatic dressing is preferred to control massive bleeding.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Regular as maybe used, but it needs to be in
- 35:01Speaker 1: sufficient amount. The American College of Surgeons and Stop the
- 35:06Speaker 1: Bleed Program recommends when you do not have hemostatic dressing,
- 35:11Speaker 1: sterile dressings, or a tourniquet us clothing to pack a
- 35:14Speaker 1: wound shirt pants, even if it's covered in body sweat.
- 35:21Speaker 1: It's more likely to provide a hemorrhage control than a tampon. Huh.
- 35:25Speaker 1: What brought this up is we're decorating the family Christmas
- 35:29Speaker 1: tree this year and our kids were asking about these
- 35:32Speaker 1: little snowman ornaments that my wife had and they were
- 35:34Speaker 1: like wondering what it was. And I had never seen
- 35:36Speaker 1: them before, but they're like little snowman's made out of
- 35:39Speaker 1: tampons as a Christmas ornament. And then somehow it came up. Yeah, huh.
- 35:48Speaker 1: My uncle one time at a boat ramp slices leg
- 35:52Speaker 1: real bad on the hitch and walking around the back
- 35:54Speaker 1: of the truck. It's deadly to walk around the back
- 35:58Speaker 1: of a truck. MAXI path on the cut and still
- 36:02Speaker 1: went fishing. But yeah, he's still living. Put that whoever
- 36:06Speaker 1: wrote in put that in your pipe and smoke it.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Chester's uncles live. And well, do we need to get
- 36:12Speaker 1: to the root. Though, where did he get the maxipad from?
- 36:16Speaker 1: Like why did he have this maxis? Where did this
- 36:19Speaker 1: come from? Like is this part of his like emergency
- 36:22Speaker 1: kit that he keeps with him, like digging around the globe,
- 36:25Speaker 1: digging around in the truck and his wife. I didn't
- 36:30Speaker 1: ask him. I'll be like Uncle Pete, let's get Uncle
- 36:35Speaker 1: Pete down the show. We'll talk about about it. We'll
- 36:37Speaker 1: do the whole episode about this. A guy wrote in
- 36:41Speaker 1: see he made up this word, but he we were
- 36:44Speaker 1: talking about some of this came up on an episode
- 36:47Speaker 1: a long time ago of a guy that wrote in that,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Oh remember those boys, Remember when Luke Combs is on
- 36:56Speaker 1: the show, and those guys were talking about some friend
- 36:58Speaker 1: of theirs that when he uses the restroom he needs
- 37:01Speaker 1: to take all his clothes off. It's just like it's
- 37:05Speaker 1: like this is a real thing. It's like a psychological disorder. Yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 1: I know someone like that. Yeah. This guy came up
- 37:11Speaker 1: with a name called fiece pantaphobia. He made the word up,
- 37:16Speaker 1: but he said, it's like it's an actual thing. It's
- 37:19Speaker 1: like this like intense fear of pooping on your pants,
- 37:22Speaker 1: like contact with feces and sufferers, sufferers of which he
- 37:28Speaker 1: is one. They take, they undress, and you say, when
- 37:34Speaker 1: he's pooping out in the woods, it's like he has
- 37:36Speaker 1: still undressed. I worries about in the woods when you're
- 37:39Speaker 1: wearing bibs and heavy clothing, and it's like, but I'm
- 37:41Speaker 1: pooped back into my bibs. Has well not not yet
- 37:45Speaker 1: for me. But we had careful Dirt told the great
- 37:49Speaker 1: was the Dirt told that story. Dirt told a great
- 37:50Speaker 1: story on on the show years ago, or maybe not
- 37:54Speaker 1: a while ago, about a guy he knows that um
- 37:59Speaker 1: can he he was a heavy equipment operator and one
- 38:03Speaker 1: day he's in his equipment all day and he's smelling
- 38:06Speaker 1: like the unmistakable smell of human feces, but he can't
- 38:09Speaker 1: figure out the source, and he's checking his clothes and
- 38:13Speaker 1: nothing makes sense, and eventually he realizes that he had
- 38:15Speaker 1: landed one on his suspender. Oh so it had got
- 38:19Speaker 1: on his suspender right here, right, so all day when
- 38:23Speaker 1: he turned to the right, you know, but then when
- 38:26Speaker 1: he dropped down, when he'd like dropped his bridges and
- 38:29Speaker 1: everything to try to investigate what went wrong. He never
- 38:31Speaker 1: suspected that MEA's an air fresher hanging off his ear.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Uh there was a guy. Oh you'll you'll appreciate this, JA,
- 38:44Speaker 1: he wrote, I am not the only one, A good
- 38:47Speaker 1: buddy of mine. That was what the Canadian Armed Forces.
- 38:50Speaker 1: You're probably excited now, aren't you. Minnico. I had to
- 38:53Speaker 1: explain to j why Canadians lacked at l that American girl.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we got right into it. I felt attack.
- 39:02Speaker 1: I'm proud to be Canadian, but yeah, I love Canadians. Man.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Every time I go up to Canada, I think North
- 39:11Speaker 1: the Colin's are isest. Canadians. Don't get any ideas about
- 39:15Speaker 1: invading this year. I know it, like it couldn't be
- 39:17Speaker 1: nice if we could just yeah, don't go and get
- 39:19Speaker 1: don't don't get any ideas about Red Dawn in North Dakota.
- 39:22Speaker 1: UM friend of the Canadian Forces told me the story
- 39:27Speaker 1: about when they were on maneuvers that required bio security
- 39:31Speaker 1: suits to be warned for an extended period of time.
- 39:36Speaker 1: A fellow soldier I actually got this is not the
- 39:40Speaker 1: word he used, but we'll say poopy dab inside his
- 39:43Speaker 1: suit and because of the nature of the maneuvers they wereround,
- 39:48Speaker 1: had to wear that suit for twenty four hours. Brutal.
- 39:55Speaker 1: He now we'll not poop in the woods without taking
- 39:58Speaker 1: his pants off. I mean, that's understandable. That's a scarring,
- 40:06Speaker 1: scarring twenty hours. I was saying how I wanted to
- 40:17Speaker 1: go around and like you know when you're driving down
- 40:19Speaker 1: the road and they have like a silence, as like
- 40:21Speaker 1: historical marker ahead, and you pulled over and be like
- 40:24Speaker 1: at this site the first gristmill was right opened in
- 40:29Speaker 1: seventeen o sevt Um. I was saying, they should do
- 40:34Speaker 1: that where birds went extinct. But they do do that
- 40:37Speaker 1: where birds went extinct. I didn't know this. The Lost
- 40:39Speaker 1: Bird Project already did it. They've erected memorials to the
- 40:43Speaker 1: heath hen Carolina Parakeet, Labrador Dock, Great oc Passenger pigeon,
- 40:50Speaker 1: the Great oc Up in your neck of the woods,
- 40:52Speaker 1: there j Up in Canada, the heath hen Um in
- 40:56Speaker 1: New England, Carolina parakeet down the floor them, the passenger
- 41:02Speaker 1: pigeon in Ohio, the Labrador dock in New York, all
- 41:05Speaker 1: these little memorials. And then they sent some pictures of
- 41:07Speaker 1: the various memorials. In they have a bronze statue of Martha,
- 41:11Speaker 1: the last passenger pigeon, at her near the aviary where
- 41:16Speaker 1: she died. It's funny how all of those are out east,
- 41:22Speaker 1: like those memorials. Yeah, it's interesting point they dot the
- 41:27Speaker 1: eastern seaboard. Maybe they don't have a travel budget. Guy
- 41:36Speaker 1: running about cooking diaphragms, So someone wrote in saying that
- 41:40Speaker 1: he's always cut the diaphragm off his big game harvest
- 41:43Speaker 1: and left it with the gut pile. But then this
- 41:45Speaker 1: is someone right in. But then you got to think,
- 41:48Speaker 1: and why not eat the muscle since it looks like
- 41:50Speaker 1: it could make a pretty decent sized meal. Well, thankfully, Um,
- 41:55Speaker 1: this guy's probably been eating diaphragm his whole life. Doesn't
- 41:57Speaker 1: know it. So oh, when you go and you get
- 42:03Speaker 1: um flank steak, skirt steak, right, skirt steak is like
- 42:10Speaker 1: skirt is diaphragm. So it's like skirt is where the
- 42:13Speaker 1: diaphragm hooks into the rib cage. So when you're getting
- 42:15Speaker 1: a deer and you go to like when you're gotting
- 42:17Speaker 1: the deer and you want to clear the diaphragm out
- 42:19Speaker 1: so you can pass everything back, and you trace the
- 42:23Speaker 1: diaphragm along the wall of the rib like that that
- 42:27Speaker 1: junction where the diaphragm kind of goes into a little
- 42:29Speaker 1: mass and muscle that seems to be like glued up
- 42:31Speaker 1: against the ribs. That skirt and hanger is like the
- 42:37Speaker 1: rear part of the diaphragm. So you've been eating that
- 42:39Speaker 1: stuff your whole life. The problem is on deer, it's
- 42:41Speaker 1: just not like big enough the mess with. But you
- 42:44Speaker 1: get up into something like a moose, you can make
- 42:46Speaker 1: you can do like legit skirt steak off moose. Kevin
- 42:51Speaker 1: Gillespie goes on to say, you should also tell him
- 42:53Speaker 1: that on larger animals, the chef, Kevin Gillespie, you should
- 42:58Speaker 1: also tell them that on larger animal such as biss
- 43:00Speaker 1: and will the bees elk, there's another muscle that sits
- 43:03Speaker 1: just below the diaphragm and helps it contract. Technically it
- 43:08Speaker 1: is the crewa of the diaphragm, but culinarily we know
- 43:12Speaker 1: it as hangar steak. And it's incredible. Now here's what
- 43:18Speaker 1: I want to dig into a fair bid because this
- 43:19Speaker 1: has enormous implications. This just happened Utah. So a while
- 43:27Speaker 1: ago I hit the news the Arizona was banning trail
- 43:30Speaker 1: cams during hunting season. Okay, Montana, right now, you can't
- 43:36Speaker 1: use trail cams during hunting season that transmit a signal,
- 43:40Speaker 1: so the transmit messages. So a divided Utah Wildlife Board
- 43:46Speaker 1: voted to band trail cam for hunting. When these motion
- 43:52Speaker 1: activated devices are used to aid in the taking of game,
- 43:59Speaker 1: their uses like a sally proliferated all over place. There
- 44:01Speaker 1: are there. I've seen stuff on social media. This is
- 44:04Speaker 1: not the article I'm looking at, but just me talking,
- 44:06Speaker 1: I've seen stuff on social media where guys will go
- 44:08Speaker 1: to like a water hole in the Arizona Strip and
- 44:11Speaker 1: they'll be twenty four trail cams hanging around. Um. Sometimes
- 44:18Speaker 1: they're used like this, just speaking personally, Sometimes they're used.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Is kind of like you see some strange use of
- 44:26Speaker 1: trail cans on public land to uh. I was hunting
- 44:29Speaker 1: turkeys with my kids in the area, but it was
- 44:31Speaker 1: like a pretty popular hiking trail, right and it's game
- 44:36Speaker 1: uses it, But it's through this kind of like big
- 44:39Speaker 1: landscape funnel through a little pass and a lot of
- 44:43Speaker 1: animals use it. But people use it all the time
- 44:45Speaker 1: and like eyeball level there it is, you know, and
- 44:52Speaker 1: you can't really go through the area. Like when you
- 44:54Speaker 1: go through there, you're sort of like submitting to be photographed.
- 44:58Speaker 1: It's not even like in a sort of a discrete
- 44:59Speaker 1: out the way plays. It's just like and I remember
- 45:02Speaker 1: going by it and I actually started having my kids.
- 45:04Speaker 1: I'm like, you know what, go around that way. I
- 45:08Speaker 1: just don't want like, oh my, I don't want pictures
- 45:10Speaker 1: of my kids like some guy's trail cam. I don't know.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Uh yeah, that's kind I gotta I got a story
- 45:16Speaker 1: that kind of ties these two together, the pooping and
- 45:18Speaker 1: the trail camps. That's great. Why didn't you do that earlier?
- 45:21Speaker 1: Well I didn't. I didn't know the trail cam topic
- 45:23Speaker 1: is gonna come up. But my uncle Mark and I
- 45:26Speaker 1: that's a good explanation. We were Uncle Mark and I
- 45:29Speaker 1: were coming back from hunting and I was like, yeah,
- 45:31Speaker 1: I just gotta check this trail cam. And he'd been
- 45:32Speaker 1: hunting the same property as me. So we we park
- 45:35Speaker 1: and we walk and all said. His face just drops
- 45:37Speaker 1: and he's like, you had a trail camp set there.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, well, what's the big deal. He's like,
- 45:42Speaker 1: oh I I did. Uh I did some business right
- 45:45Speaker 1: over there, right in front of the trail cam the
- 45:47Speaker 1: other day. So sure enough, trail camp pictures of him.
- 45:54Speaker 1: I think I deleted those. I had a trail cam
- 45:56Speaker 1: behind our fish shack and my body pulled the art.
- 46:00Speaker 1: I still haven't gotten the card back because his wife
- 46:02Speaker 1: was peing back there and he took the card. Um. Now,
- 46:06Speaker 1: as I covered this piece of as I talked about
- 46:09Speaker 1: this subject, I want people to know that I right now,
- 46:10Speaker 1: at this moment, like at this moment, I have a
- 46:14Speaker 1: trail came out on private land um, and I have
- 46:19Speaker 1: a trail cam out on public land that I was
- 46:24Speaker 1: fixing to go fetch but haven't gone fetched. But it's
- 46:26Speaker 1: not like a transmitting one. Okay, so I have one out.
- 46:28Speaker 1: So is this is this band just for public landtall
- 46:32Speaker 1: or is it just private and public during hunting season?
- 46:36Speaker 1: Used to be used in the aid and the taking
- 46:38Speaker 1: a game, but it goes. There's some other wrinkles of
- 46:41Speaker 1: this that are really interesting. This this band applies to
- 46:45Speaker 1: cameras with internal storage memory, as well as those that
- 46:48Speaker 1: transmit images to the hunter cell phone. The prohibition does
- 46:52Speaker 1: not apply to private landowners monitoring their property and agricultural operations,
- 46:59Speaker 1: oh or municipalities participating in the urban Deer program, but
- 47:05Speaker 1: it does apply to most hunting on both private and
- 47:07Speaker 1: public land. That's pretty straightforward. I've rolled in with this.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Which is very interesting is it's also banned this. Okay, again,
- 47:19Speaker 1: there's something that Arizona did and you taught it. These
- 47:21Speaker 1: are not like these are these are very conservative states, right,
- 47:27Speaker 1: these are? Uh? You know this isn't you know if
- 47:31Speaker 1: you've heard about this coming no offense, it was like
- 47:34Speaker 1: from New Jersey. You could picture someone being like, that's
- 47:36Speaker 1: not fair to the animals, you know, um in sort
- 47:39Speaker 1: of the wrong way. But this is like very like
- 47:41Speaker 1: an internal hunting dialogue. This is I don't think that
- 47:45Speaker 1: like I'm guessing. I'm trying to find a way to
- 47:47Speaker 1: to to express this more clearly. This isn't like in
- 47:52Speaker 1: these states. I suspect that it's not the case of
- 47:57Speaker 1: non hunting individuals screwing with hunters, like in the case
- 48:04Speaker 1: where you get like a band on bear hunting. It's
- 48:05Speaker 1: like it's not coming from hunters. It's coming from nine
- 48:08Speaker 1: hunters trying to dick with hunters. This is like an
- 48:11Speaker 1: internal hunting conversation in these states. Is my gut on this.
- 48:16Speaker 1: From what I've read about it, it's like it's in
- 48:18Speaker 1: a conversation among the hunting community. They've also and this
- 48:22Speaker 1: is really interesting. I want to dedicate these next few
- 48:25Speaker 1: sentences of Spencer new Hearth because you know, Spencer always
- 48:29Speaker 1: is such painting the ass belt stuff. Well, well, the
- 48:36Speaker 1: other day while we were loading up to while we're
- 48:37Speaker 1: getting ready to go Pike Spearing, how did you notice
- 48:39Speaker 1: me being on the phone. I was on the phone
- 48:41Speaker 1: Spencer new Hearth, what was he being a painting? The
- 48:43Speaker 1: asked Belt about me, saying to him, I'm like, I
- 48:46Speaker 1: want to um do a deep dive on our website.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I want to have one of our like, like one
- 48:54Speaker 1: of our sort of investigative writers do a deep dive
- 48:57Speaker 1: about what is the future of trail came us and
- 49:01Speaker 1: he was like, oh, probably won't be like a huge performer,
- 49:04Speaker 1: but we'll probably do a guy. He didn't talk like
- 49:07Speaker 1: that beach nut you know he's but he's he's usually
- 49:12Speaker 1: right about that kind of stuff. He's really good at.
- 49:14Speaker 1: That's not the part he's being the paying the ASPT.
- 49:16Speaker 1: I said to him also, and I already texted him
- 49:18Speaker 1: this morning about this. I said to him, also, I
- 49:21Speaker 1: think that you should probably start paying attention to thermal
- 49:24Speaker 1: night vision stuff. I think that there's gonna be a
- 49:26Speaker 1: lot of discussions about thermal night vision, and then we
- 49:30Speaker 1: went on to discuss how it's pretty fringe because it's
- 49:33Speaker 1: like hog hunters, right, and hogs are hog hunters are
- 49:36Speaker 1: killing invasive hogs, um like totally unregulated, like people are
- 49:42Speaker 1: trying to get rid of him. So who would ever
- 49:44Speaker 1: have a complaint with that? Right? And then increasingly Kyle hunters,
- 49:49Speaker 1: it's like rewriting predator hunting thermal night vision stuff, changing everything.
- 49:54Speaker 1: And I said, but I still advise you, and he
- 49:55Speaker 1: was kind of he was kind of like dismissive of
- 49:57Speaker 1: what I was saying. Utah has banned thermal imaging night
- 50:02Speaker 1: vision devices and I'm guessing this doesn't say but but
- 50:07Speaker 1: I know from I've heard more and more and more
- 50:09Speaker 1: and more from people who are using it to scout.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Yeah, that you can go out in the
- 50:16Speaker 1: dark and get onto a herd elk in the dark
- 50:22Speaker 1: and monitor their movements through the night and be ready
- 50:25Speaker 1: for a legal light. Yeah, makes sense. And follow them right,
- 50:33Speaker 1: find them in their beds. Find you can go out,
- 50:37Speaker 1: you can find where DearS bedded, no problem. Um, so
- 50:43Speaker 1: you tab is uh thrown at in what sort of
- 50:48Speaker 1: range to those things have like how how close to
- 50:49Speaker 1: you have to be to the animal for it to
- 50:53Speaker 1: not close. We had the Uh, I've been very curious
- 50:58Speaker 1: about it, so I I got to spend some time
- 51:02Speaker 1: with UM some thermal night vision equipment. Ah, we got some.
- 51:08Speaker 1: So there's a place Ultimate night Vision and they rent
- 51:12Speaker 1: UM Thermal night Vision gere and we got something to
- 51:17Speaker 1: go out and uh hunt coyotes tonight for a couple
- 51:20Speaker 1: of nights. And it's like a big learning curve and
- 51:22Speaker 1: you're learning to use it. But I'll tell you one
- 51:24Speaker 1: of the main things about it is like it is
- 51:26Speaker 1: really interesting to see what goes on at night in
- 51:29Speaker 1: just a different way. The way animals behave and stuff
- 51:32Speaker 1: is so just different at night. It was like like
- 51:35Speaker 1: I'm I'm like happy for the experience of going out
- 51:37Speaker 1: and witnessing what it looks like. You gotta learn it
- 51:41Speaker 1: and there's a lot of stuff with death perception that's hard,
- 51:44Speaker 1: but I mean it was cool, man. And you know,
- 51:47Speaker 1: this is after all the big game seasons were over,
- 51:49Speaker 1: so like this sort of thing, like using it for
- 51:51Speaker 1: hunting of a big game wasn't have any implications for
- 51:53Speaker 1: us because the season was done anyways. But in Texas, no, no,
- 51:57Speaker 1: we didn't know. We used the Montana at night. Um
- 52:00Speaker 1: and just like using predator calls at night and seeing
- 52:03Speaker 1: the way it just the different attitude that things have
- 52:06Speaker 1: at night about that call. Um. But that yeah, so
- 52:12Speaker 1: they they they did that. So to craft this camera rule,
- 52:17Speaker 1: they surveyed nine thousand licensed hunters seeking data on how
- 52:25Speaker 1: people are going about it. Right, this surprised me. Of
- 52:29Speaker 1: those mugs hadn't used trail cams. Mhm uh. Only eight
- 52:34Speaker 1: percent of the mugs they interviewed. We're using transmitting cameras.
- 52:39Speaker 1: I don't though, I'd be way hirer now. I think
- 52:42Speaker 1: that stuff is just catching on. Though, yeah, I don't know.
- 52:45Speaker 1: I didn't know that like a year from now, I
- 52:47Speaker 1: think that would be totally different. You think, So it's
- 52:50Speaker 1: just catching It's just I think it's just catching on
- 52:52Speaker 1: those transmitting cameras, Like I've just had headaches with them
- 52:55Speaker 1: so many times, and it's like, I consider myself a
- 52:57Speaker 1: techie person and it's still just like, you know, you've
- 53:01Speaker 1: got a lot of people who can barely use your
- 53:02Speaker 1: cell phones, let alone try to figure out how to
- 53:04Speaker 1: link a camera. And then yeah, I think you're going
- 53:09Speaker 1: to see more and more because of the price point. Right,
- 53:11Speaker 1: the price points already dropped in half for what it
- 53:13Speaker 1: was like three or four years ago totally where it
- 53:15Speaker 1: was four or five six hundred dollars for those and
- 53:17Speaker 1: now you can get a decent one for you. That's
- 53:21Speaker 1: a good point because even like with j what what
- 53:24Speaker 1: your live scope? You have a garment live scope. I
- 53:27Speaker 1: was like jealous of that, and in the back of
- 53:29Speaker 1: my head like, man, I guarantee like in a year
- 53:32Speaker 1: it's gonna be half the price, and a year I'll
- 53:33Speaker 1: get it for half the price and it will somehow
- 53:35Speaker 1: be better. It's gonna get there. But you're like, you're
- 53:38Speaker 1: like early, You're like an early adopter on a live scope. Yeah,
- 53:40Speaker 1: And if you're a tournament guy, it's like that's the edge.
- 53:43Speaker 1: You need to spend that little bit of extra money
- 53:45Speaker 1: to get that edge. And if Garman wants to send
- 53:47Speaker 1: these boys couple life scopes to the Walleye Tour to this,
- 53:55Speaker 1: I wouldn't have they kicked one in for me. And
- 53:57Speaker 1: they should know that I have a lot of garment products, dude,
- 54:00Speaker 1: and I just ordered garment dive watch. I have a
- 54:02Speaker 1: garment man I got a lot of garm wrot, so
- 54:07Speaker 1: I haven't got my dive watch yet. I got an
- 54:09Speaker 1: MK one. Um tell's that talking about Oh here's the
- 54:16Speaker 1: other even I'm going like, normally, if you study journalism
- 54:19Speaker 1: in college, they'll tell you this. They'll tell you like,
- 54:22Speaker 1: when you're write an article, put the most important thing
- 54:24Speaker 1: up top, and then you work down in levels of
- 54:28Speaker 1: interest and importance. Right, so it be like, um, Seth dies, right,
- 54:34Speaker 1: and you go down and be like, oh, so that's
- 54:35Speaker 1: how Seth died. And then you go down a little
- 54:38Speaker 1: more and invention at the botmo wo be like Seth
- 54:39Speaker 1: had a dog. You know, it's sort of the article
- 54:42Speaker 1: to flow like that pretty cool dog. I'm doing the
- 54:47Speaker 1: opposite because here's the most interesting part of this to
- 54:49Speaker 1: me coming at the end. UH. They're putting an end
- 54:54Speaker 1: to the sale of data and images produced by trail cameras,
- 54:58Speaker 1: meaning there are guys like and I know some of
- 55:00Speaker 1: these guys. There are guys that are professional scouts and
- 55:04Speaker 1: they sell um their professional scouts that find animals and
- 55:09Speaker 1: sell animals to Governor's tag holders. They sell animals to outfitters,
- 55:15Speaker 1: so they'll go out and they'll find like you know,
- 55:18Speaker 1: they go out and find like a two right, they
- 55:21Speaker 1: can sell that knowledge about that animal and sell the
- 55:25Speaker 1: photos of that animal in the way points. That would
- 55:29Speaker 1: be a tough thing for them to crack down on.
- 55:31Speaker 1: One of the guys that didn't like this rule that
- 55:33Speaker 1: they interview, Um, they mentioned uh uh, he had a
- 55:38Speaker 1: hard time with enforcement because you're saying like, okay, on
- 55:41Speaker 1: private land, you can use it to monitor your property. Okay.
- 55:45Speaker 1: So this guy is like, big Buck can't look at that.
- 55:49Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let that change my hunt plans. Yeah, yeah,
- 55:54Speaker 1: that's gonna be tough. Um. Just yr day, I uh
- 56:00Speaker 1: ext of the body mine because we're trying to plan
- 56:01Speaker 1: out next year's Bobcat trip and I texted a body
- 56:05Speaker 1: mine that he said, you got any what's going on
- 56:07Speaker 1: with bobcats up in your neck of the woods? Right?
- 56:09Speaker 1: What's he sent me two seconds later? True camp picture
- 56:12Speaker 1: of a Bobcat And that probably influenced my decision making
- 56:17Speaker 1: at that point where I was like, oh, who tell
- 56:21Speaker 1: me more? Right, not able to sell that stuff if
- 56:25Speaker 1: you're a professional scout scouter, which it kind of makes
- 56:33Speaker 1: sense in a way. Fair chase get that little clap.
- 56:39Speaker 1: I did go find it yourself. Yeah. I like that.
- 56:42Speaker 1: I don't know what it means. Man felt like transition. Yeah,
- 56:48Speaker 1: I just felt like a needed to put a clap
- 56:50Speaker 1: in there. He was like a book end. Yeah, that's
- 56:52Speaker 1: what it meant to be. It was like a book closing.
- 56:58Speaker 1: So let me let me you know, I did my
- 57:00Speaker 1: book closed too early. I think that I wonder if
- 57:04Speaker 1: this is gonna be a thing because if you're sitting
- 57:07Speaker 1: at home trying to think about how technology intersects with
- 57:10Speaker 1: hunting and hunting practices, fishing practices. Um, I think there's
- 57:14Speaker 1: a great example to be found in drones. And I
- 57:16Speaker 1: was talking to this with o' beach nut the other day, Spencer. Uh,
- 57:23Speaker 1: while you guys are loading up gear and we were talking,
- 57:25Speaker 1: we were talking about the example of what happened with drones. Okay,
- 57:30Speaker 1: the minute drones became like the minute there was a
- 57:33Speaker 1: discussion about using drones for hunting, like overnight, thirteen states
- 57:38Speaker 1: and in a bunch more fouled. But immediately thirteen states
- 57:41Speaker 1: in the West, like open country states where drones will
- 57:44Speaker 1: be particularly helpful because they're open ground. Thirteen states came
- 57:49Speaker 1: in and said no, no drones and hunting, no use
- 57:52Speaker 1: of drones and hunting, and I was like, it was
- 57:54Speaker 1: interesting that they got on it so fast because they
- 57:58Speaker 1: did it before there was a user group, before it
- 58:00Speaker 1: had become woven into the hunting culture. And Spencer brought
- 58:05Speaker 1: up he said, but drones went from zero to sixty
- 58:07Speaker 1: because like the initial the first initial thing that was
- 58:12Speaker 1: good for was it was good for mounting a camera.
- 58:15Speaker 1: That's like what made them what they were. Like if
- 58:17Speaker 1: you couldn't mount a camera at them, it's a toy helicopter,
- 58:19Speaker 1: like no one cares. So He's like, it went from
- 58:22Speaker 1: zero to sixty and you could immediately see it. He goes,
- 58:24Speaker 1: if you go back in trail camp history, was like
- 58:26Speaker 1: a thing could like initially a thing could like tell
- 58:29Speaker 1: you that something passed by, right, and it evolved and
- 58:33Speaker 1: you and you built up this user group of people,
- 58:35Speaker 1: You built up a big industry for it. There's a
- 58:37Speaker 1: lot of companies that make trail cams. People have been
- 58:40Speaker 1: using trail camps for a decade or more, right, but
- 58:43Speaker 1: then trail camps hit to this certain level of sophistication
- 58:46Speaker 1: and this certain price point, whereas now it's like very
- 58:50Speaker 1: achievable to get a camera that sends you messages that
- 58:53Speaker 1: says like right now, right now, there's a buck in
- 58:57Speaker 1: that field to your phone, and so for now for
- 59:03Speaker 1: state game agencies to want to go like, man, it's
- 59:05Speaker 1: kind of getting ridiculous. Now we gotta let clamp down
- 59:07Speaker 1: on this. You're gonna be battling against people who this
- 59:11Speaker 1: is like woven into their cultural fabric of hunting. Well,
- 59:15Speaker 1: and there's more. It's just gonna be harder. And drones
- 59:17Speaker 1: were like they got drones before drones were a thing. Yeah,
- 59:21Speaker 1: well there's more gray area with the trail camps. Like
- 59:23Speaker 1: you said, the landowners, a drone is like if you
- 59:25Speaker 1: put a flying object in the sky with a camera,
- 59:27Speaker 1: it's like that's a no go. But the the trail
- 59:29Speaker 1: camp thing is a little more touchy. Like a lot
- 59:32Speaker 1: of provinces will say you can't even have your drone
- 59:35Speaker 1: along when you're hunting, like if it's and that for
- 59:37Speaker 1: me that stuff because I'm always filming stuff. But like
- 59:39Speaker 1: even from a non hunting standpoint, if you just you
- 59:41Speaker 1: just can't have the drone in your vehicle, like that's
- 59:44Speaker 1: a no go. A lot of states you can't. You
- 59:46Speaker 1: can't be like like say I I'm chat and I
- 59:49Speaker 1: are hunting a property and I see a buck heading
- 59:52Speaker 1: his way, I can't text him be like hey jet,
- 59:55Speaker 1: big buck coming, like be ready. But you know you
- 59:59Speaker 1: can have in the stag. You're gonna have a trail
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: camera that's on a trail a couple of hundred yards
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: from you and get a picture, uh picture sent to
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: your phone of a buck walking past that trail camera
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: heading in your diction. Same thing. It's the same damn thing.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: You know what? What else Spencer annoyed me about when
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: I was talking to him about doing like a big
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: thing like sort of the pros the cons get a
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: bunch of perspectives on like where trail cams are headed.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I was saying to him, Um, I don't want to
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I don't want you guys all. He's the guy I'm
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: gonna talk about. It's been on the show, but I'm
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: not gonna say who is. There's there's a guy I
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: know that manages a large property. He's been on the show. Um,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: I'll let him talk with us, but I want to
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: talk about it for him and name him anyway, he said,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: and he's in a state where there's no prohibitions on
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: trail cams whatsoever. He this year for the first time
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: ever during hunting season turned him all off. He said
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: it was just changing the game so much and getting
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: too weird. Yeah, that he knew where everything because he's
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: got twenty some of you know, out and wonderer and
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: he's a he's a property manager on a hunting property,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: and it just got to be where like it just
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: rewrote everything. One's coming down the field edge right now. Well,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: that's kind of just like the Liveshop got the message.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: It's just like lavescope, you see the fish coming. They
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: can't hide anymore. It's like so he voluntarily turned his
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: he voluntarily turned his off, and he said it was nice.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: He was like he was glad that he didn't and
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: wanted into want like sort of change in the hunt
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: and season and uh so anyway, Spencer's like, yeah, well
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: that's kind of an anomaly and that doesn't matter. I'm like,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you wouldn't be able to if you were a journalist,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: you wouldn't be able to write about murder, because murders
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: an anomaly, you know what I mean. He wouldn't be
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: able to be like so and so brutally murdered someone
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: because that's weird. By his logic. Yeah, you see what
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I'm saying. Why it was why Spencer was so annoyingly
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: there with all this crazy technology. Oh sorry, I was
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: going to do the bookend again. Go ahead, Chester. With
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: all this crazy technology, it just makes me think that
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: people just have to be as responsible as they can
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: with it. And obviously, you know, like with live scope
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: for instance, being able to target a school of crop
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: e is way better than you used to once people
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: actually really figure out how to use it, not just
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: going out there and like just limiting and keeping their
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: limits all the time, you know, um, just being responsible
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: with it. Well, there's like a I call it a
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: wives tale, but we say back home that if you
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: if you laid out a percent of the fish that
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: are caught, right, a hundred percent of those fish are
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: caught by less of those anglers, right because of skill,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: because of ability, because of mobility, things like that. Electronics
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: are changing that that percentage, like you're saying, is definitely
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: going to go up because it's no longer about just
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: knowing patterns or having the right baits or you know,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: the boat take get there. Those electronics take the guess work.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: The guests were completely out of it, Like map chips.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: When you can go to a lake you've never been
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: to before and you have one foot contours. I remember,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: like ten years ago official with my buddy and he
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: would have like pictures and we triangulate it and it
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: was just, you know, it felt so archaic. And now
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: there's just you roll up to a lake and you
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: can have where all the old roadbeds are and weed
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: lines and everything. M hmm. Yeah, here's the final thing
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna say about it. They're I'm gonna do the
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: book end thing again. Um, we'll all do that the
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: count of three. If everyone w everybody's good. But I
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: think that, uh, like I've explained, I've tried to explain it.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Perspective on this a handful of times where when looking
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: at like practices, hunting practices, I tend to I tend
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: to take their approach were like historical use patterns. Okay,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: like historical use cultural practices like that stuff needs to
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: be honored and respected if it's something that's if it's
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: a sustainable practice and people have been doing it a
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: long time, like I'd honor that. So if you're in
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: a state where people have run black bears, a hunted
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: black bears with hounds and they've been doing it and
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: they have a stable bear population and they've been at
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: it for two hundred years. Um. To me, that's like
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: that's in, that's grandfathered in. Like, don't mess with that, right,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: it's a it's a it's a cultural practice. I think
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: that like as you get into the technology stuff, UM,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: you're gonna continue, You're gonna have to continue to have
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: conversations about Um. I think it's fair game to have
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: conversations about incoming technology. I'd rather do that than go
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: and revisit cultural practices and try to like get rid
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: of that stuff. And you got and I think that
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: you got. If you're if you're a manager, I think
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: you gotta look like out in the horizon and you
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: gotta see what's coming and if and if you think
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: something's gonna become problem bag down the road, I would
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: suggest that you get on a little early before it
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: becomes woven into the into the cultural fabrica you know,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: in the hunting community. And it's gonna be hard if
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: you came in now and said, you know what, after
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: careful consideration, I think that the compound bow is just
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: too effective. Right, good luck, right, good luck, but you
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: could honestly have had that chat they're trying there. There's
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: talks about live bait getting cut out of Manitoba, and
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: that's something it's like, well, these people have been using
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: live bait for however many years. It's been grandfathered in,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: so it's a it's a tough discussion. Yeah, if you're
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: getting rid of live bait to make room for live
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: scopers to catch more fish, that's a real problem for me.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: It's a real problem for me. The crossbow things another
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: big issue, all right, one two? Right, Okay, everybody's don't
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: talk about Mandy. Can you do me the favorite laying
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: out like where we are and what's going on, and
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: about how everything is underwater ship like that, take it away. Uh,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: because you grew up in this neck of the wood,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: so you got like an inside your you have land.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: It's currently Uh, people are prye fishing on your land
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: right now. They are They actually are that that that
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: is for sure. Uh. Most people would call it BF.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: But we are in the beautiful state of North Dakota.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: We're in the Devil's Lake area currently, we are on
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: the far far west end over in the Midwakan area.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: And our cozy shock chet here double wide. Uh. Yeah,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: it's just a really small community that's that's grown a
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: little bit with the oil booms out for a little
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: bit further out west. But it's a fishing community. It's
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: a fishing farming community. Um. Yeah, and you're talking about
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: about the lake growing. Uh, it's blown up. Obviously, it's
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: been a big deal. It's been going on now. It's
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: hard to say that it's been going on for a
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: couple of decades. I really the water eyes correct. So, um,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: the lake actually for like the the eight most of
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: the eighties, we were kind of in a drought pattern here. Um.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: The interesting part two is when we're in a drought
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: pattern and the waters were exceptionally low, like there was
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: really high mercury levels here in the water. Uh, the
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: salinity levels were really high. Like there was actually like
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: warnings out for the amount of fish and that you
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: could eat based on those things. Um. So yeah, we
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: had some historic snow events. We got back to regular
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: rain patterns, snow patterns. We had a five hundred year event,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: a hundred year events, and then regular more regular rain events.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: And I think it's like a million acres plus now.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: But it's so odd to see that. Uh roads are gone,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: houses are gone, farms are gone, tree lines are gone
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: on uh roads have been built up fifty six ft
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: in some areas to make them still passable. Other ones
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: they've just completely abandoned. UM. It's yeah, And tell about
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: tell about the place you grew up on, just just
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: as an example. So where I grew up on over
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: on Black Tiger Bay, which actually used to be the
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: farthest east portion of Double's Lake. UM, where we actually
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: fish to day one was actually not connected point to
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: where your place would have been. Correct. Uh. Yeah. The
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: water just started started rising and actually rose fairly quick
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: the first couple of years to the to the point
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: where UM accesses had to be moved. People lost homes,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: you could move cabins, things like that, and it just
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: swallowed it up. Like if you couldn't if you couldn't
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: physically move that structure, it's gone. Were they gutting those
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: houses of UM like like hauling away propane, hauling away
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: like stuff they didn't want to get in the water,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: or was it happening too fast? That's a really good question.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Like where we were at, you jumped on it as
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: fast as you could, but there was still so you
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: had to pick and choose, right, like the structures that
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: you could possibly change, and they're just we're remote here
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: and you can only move so much. Um. Realistically, we
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: gave like we gave trailers away. We just sent it
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: out there and just said come get them because we're
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: going to lose them, right, Like, we didn't have the
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: money to pay all that to have them moved, but
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: we didn't want them to go to waste, and we
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: definitely didn't want them to be underwater, right, so just
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: come get these structures. They're yours. But it's weird to
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: say that there's where we're at. There's a mile and
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: a half underwater. It's underwater, like it's gone under under
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: like under sixty under sixty vertical feet of water. But
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: you have to go a mile and a half out
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: from the shoreline. Yes, yes, so how fast did the
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: water ry? Um? We had a bunch of issues. And
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: Jay can actually chime in on this too, Like the
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: big trigger point it was like in the nineties. Um,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: actually kind of like in the in the late nineties, Um,
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: we had bad, bad flooding. You know, a ton of
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: snow spring melt off all these things. It was like
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: the perfect storm of everything to to happen, and that
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: initial jump was crazy, uh, to the point where they
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: couldn't get caught up. And if you notice the road
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: structure around here, like we drove over a couple of
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: those bridges, like those are gone right, so to drive
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: all the way around like sixty seventy eight miles because
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: you can't drive across you know, cut across um. And
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: then it just continued to go. It just continued until
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: we're out where we're at right now. Like the bowl
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: is full. Yeah, that's that's another thing that Um, this
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: is like a dead end basin. So normally you think
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: of like flooding in a river valley. It's just that
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: the river valley can't drain it fast enough. But you know,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: floods go away pretty quick. But here you're flooding an
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: area that the outflow is. It's very high up, so
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: you could it could hold all this water for such
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: a long period of time. Well, it's still flat here
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: like this is we're talking about this yesterday, the catchment
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: area for so much like yeah, when it all the
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: water just collects here, it's yeah, it brings a wide
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: and it's it eventually is gonna eventually drains out in
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: which direction when it leaves here? Well currently, and I
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: shouldn't say that, I should have double checked. But historically, um,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: they have been draining one to two inches off every month,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: and they've been draining it into the Cheyenne River very
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: very controlled. A couple of big pump houses, correct, like
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: on Minna walk inside here and then one on the
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: west side. Right, correct, there's a few of them. And
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: the reason why they have to go into there, we
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: would make more sense right to go into the Red River.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: The problem is as the Red River flows north, that
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: flows into Canada. We don't want your water. I thought that,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: I thought the man I feel big Walwyes, that's true.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: She's the biologist. She could probably speak more to that.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: It is actually feel like you just got you guys
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: feel up in Canada and you're gonna speak for the
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: whole nation. You guys feel like you're just good on water. Yeah,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: we're set. Where's we got we got that freshwater? Trust me,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: we send them enough every spring that causes flooding for
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: them too, so because we melt here obviously before they do,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: and that water is all running north and they haven't
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: thought yet. So like the Winnipeg area all along there,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: it floods pretty bad. It's a it's a serious thing
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: talking about good American water here, j we'll pass, we'll pass.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: I'll start drinking that water. You'll get a lot more
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: girl up in that country and more aggression. So this,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: this water does make it to Canada though, right, is
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: what like Cheyenne nor flowing north? Yeah, I don't know
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: what you're pointing. Well, I'm just saying Devil's like naturally
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: overflows into the Cheyenne River. The Shinen River is a
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: tributary of the Red River of the North, which flows
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: into Canada. I'm not familiar with the Chyenne, so I
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: mean if it goes into the Red then yeah, it
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: comes into Canada, but very slowly. Then I want to
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: go and direct the Red River is still doing good? Well, well,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: research is to find out. But uh, back to your place,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: can you explain the property tax? Thinks that's really interesting
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: to me. For a while you had to pay taxes
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: on land it was underwater. Correct. If you think about
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: the farms, you know, my heart bleeds for for that. That.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: That's what my family does is farms too. And uh,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: thousands and thousands and thousands of acres underwater. We're talking
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: real crop and cattle things like that. Uh, And because
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: you owned it, you still had to pay property tax
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: on it. Even though people are driving over in boats,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: it's underwater. So they actually had to cope. And like
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: I said, because that water ROAs so fast and they
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: were trying to deal with FEMA and I mean all
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: the other disaster federal things like that, it kind of
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: got lost in the mix per se, right because it
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: has to go through the legislature and all that. So, yeah,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: it took them a while for them to repeal that law.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: So now you don't have to pay tax, but you
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: still own that land. So if the water ever magically
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: recedes like back down to you know the ladies eighties,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: early nineties level, like, there's gonna be a whole lot
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: of property out there. You know, we we covered it's
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: the same. I think it's the same weather events in
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: an area in South Dakota. And I don't know if
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: you've had a similar problem up here, but in South
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Dakota there were there's a lot of controversy where with
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: the rising water inundating farmland and residential properties. Um even
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: though taxes were suspended on the submerged water, there were
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: people going in and running booey markers along their property
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: lines to keep anglers and hunters out, but then having
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: what everybody's said like private parts of the lake. So
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: you're so you would buoy off your farm with booie
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: strings and uh, just have it be like you can
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: fish it. But then people are like, but it's it's
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: the fish of the you know, from state stocking program.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: And this was going on at the time, and he said,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: like naturally, the way that everybody thinks is then people
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: would go and all line up along the booey fence
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: because like it's got to be better over there, so
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: they'd go fish along that edge, you know, thinking death
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: where all the fish were hiding is around the private property,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: which is like a like like a very much like
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: a hunting thing, you know. Um, and people were hashing
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: at out. Was that the thing that was that? That?
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Were you seeing that up where people were like fencing
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: off with booty markers what would have been their lot? No, No,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: this is way too big of big of waters. But
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: that whole South Dakota gig is really interesting too, because
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: I kind of happened around the same time. I feel
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: like a little bit sooner um a wall based specifically
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: that that comes to mind right away. There's literally a
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: few accesses where the silos of the farms, that's all
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: that's sticking out of the top of the water rights,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: Like that's the structure in the in in wabe is
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: those old farmsteads. But the crazy part, which you used
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: should do a little bit of research on, they started
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: like putting in these public accesses right which then they
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: then repealed later, which has been really been a big
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: controversy there. So there it was already a pothole, like
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: littered with potholes, but obviously rising waters things spill over. Yeah,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: like private land becomes now public waters. It's a big
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: controversy there. Uh, and it just kind of keeps going.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: But they kind of gave us like a pre shot
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: highlight of what was going to happen, almost but this
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: happened on a bigger scale. Do you ever take um,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: do you ever take a boat and go cruise around
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: on like what like over your property? No? I I haven't.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Actually I think would be really really interesting, uh to
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: go see and look at what's what's there and how
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: deep it is, Oh yeah, to go down there with
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: some dive gear. It's it's hard look for your old stuff. Yeah,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: it's it's heartbreaking, right, like this is where I where
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: I grew up. This is where this love and this
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: passion and my best memories of my dad and my
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: family are at and you make new but it would
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: be it's hard. So did did the fishing? As soon
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: as the water got up? Was the fishing just like
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: instantly that much better than before, Like with all that
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: extra within a year or two weeks, you got all
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: that extra structure, you got all that extra cover. You've
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: got way more water. Like it had to have allowed
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: it had to makee fish stocks just explode. Man, imagine
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: just how much and how much nutrients because when I
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: in the nineties, I just heard about devils all the time.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I'm not sure if that would be considered the peak
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: of the fishery, like, but yeah, I would say, yeah,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: And that was a weird Part two, Like I can
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: remember the worst lge blooms, like I mean split green
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: pea soup discussing the whole entire lake in the old days, right,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: and maybe on some small bays now, but you just
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: don't have that right, you know. I think there was
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: a lot of concern to when we had all this
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: overland flooding um because of the residual chemicals right coming
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: off crop lands, coming coming from the structures that have
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: been flooded. What was going to happen right, what was
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: going to happen with that water quality? Was? I mean,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: we're we gonna kill fish where we gonna have some
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: catastrophic events here based on the facilities that have been
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: swallowed up whole wide. What's the sort of local um
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: temperature on this thing? Now? Are there people who are like,
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: I like it just the way it is now? I
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: can't speak for that. I think it's conflicting because the farmers,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: I mean, fisherman, I'm sure we're happy when that was.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: I mean, it's got to be like the got a
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: lot of people who just like the fish and they're
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: like not perfect. And there's a lot of people who
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: just like the farm and they're like this ain't acceptable.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: I chatted with some folks in this area about that,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: and uh, I think it's like twenty five million dollars
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: fishing ranks, you know, to this economy that was like
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: back in two thousand five, or whatever. So it's got
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: to be maybe greater now or whatnot. But it's probably
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: farmers are really wanting their land back, and obviously the
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: fishermen really want to keep it. I wonder what the
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: value of those farms would be if it be considerable
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: to the twenty five million or I don't know. I
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: don't know what a farm is worth, Like the agricultural output,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: the agriculture I'll put off all that land would have
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: to dwarf the Fishing Act dollars with a fishing activity.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I don't know either. But um, but yeah, I was
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I've been reading just right now on this pumping water stuff,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: and it is in two thousand five, they just began
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: pumping water into the Cheyenne River, which then drains into
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: the Red River, which flows into Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: and it goes into the ocean eventually. And they were
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: they were worried about, you know, back then, about the
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: salt levels and stuff that we're in here contaminating like
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Lake Winnipeg and whatnot. But there are four pumps put
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: in the area to be able to do that, in
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: canals and drainage pipes, um or channels and drainage pipes?
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: What a project? What did I say? Uh? What is
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: the what is the goal is the gold? Like? What year?
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: This has gotta be? Something people debate too, What years
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: regarded as normal? If normal happened to be, if normal
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: happened to be, Like if we sort of set our
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: expectations are normal during a major drought cycle? Like what
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: is normal? Well, I don't know. The one map chip
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: that my buddy had for the area, like the navyonics
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: whatever it was, they say, the one that shows a
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: lot of the earlier outline is was it was a
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: big date because that that's what we were fishing was
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: probably dbed. So it's twenty two of water um where
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: where we were fishing yesterday, and that was the old
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: road right ut red with all that rebel. So that's
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: the date that's stuck in my head from talking to
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: So if you're gonna pump it back to normal, you're
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: gonna be pumping off two ft of water off of
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: In nineteen forty, Devil's Lake was nearly dry, and in
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: June of two thousand eleven, the lake reached a modern
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: day record high something going down since then. In June
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: two thousand and eleven would I mean, I, yeah, I
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: don't know. Yeah, it's been going down obviously m hm,
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: can't going down very much literally, like so we have
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: all the fluctuations right like this like can fluctuate eight
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: nine fear no problem, right, that's not a big deal.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: That's not based on a major drought. That's just because
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: of so much supers area things like that. Um. But
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: it was just a couple of years ago after my
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: dad passed. I came back out obviously to the cabins.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I wanted to see the property, make sure everything's good,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: talk to the to our neighbors. And I was nervous
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: this is a later property, correct, So we we were
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: we moved right, like, we moved significantly back, um. And
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: I remember pulling in and like the water was right there,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: like it's it was like twenty two ft. We got
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: out like the you know tape measure from the back
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: door of the cabin to the water, and I was like,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: oh my gosh, like what do I do? Like this
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: was not this close? You know? Do we have to
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: move this stuff again? Like really like freaking out. And
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: so the we'll see one of the accesses. I won't
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: say exactly which one because they'll know where where the
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: properties are at. But this access has been moved seven times,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: is l seven times it's been moved on our property,
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: but like basically evident domain, you know. So I've seen
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: him move back as the water comes up where it's
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: nice landing, do you know. But it's like, now we've
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: got that right there, and I'm like, Okay, what do
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: they know what's going to happen or should we just
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: pull the stuff now or is it actually going to go,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: you know, go back down. So they were showing us
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: I'm sure it happens around here, but in in South Dakota,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: they were showing us these like well they think are
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: like dream boat launches, which is where highways go underwater.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: And they're like, no matter how high the water gets
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: or how low it gets, you still like backing down
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: a highway like very nice boat launches. It there's asphalt
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: boat launch geological evidence that the lakes have overflowed into
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: the Shine River and dried up completely on several occasions
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: over the past ten thousand years. I wonder how, I
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: wonder how it's like having a little dug during here. Man,
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: he's just not fighting with you. He doesn't fight you,
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: but he checks everything out. I wonder how high the
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: water asked the peak to two flow out of the basin.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: It's probably uh right around like how much higher than
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: right now? Elevation of one thousand, four hundred and fifty
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: four point three ft is when it'll start. It's like
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: record high in modern day. So is that all right? Chester? Sure? Okay,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Here's here's something I want to do because the top
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: about what we've been up to. I want to juxtapose, um.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: I want to juxtapose live scope fishing with pike spearing
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: because I think these are uh right like like if
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: you imagine um, uh like, imagine that you stretch your
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: arms out as wide as you can stretch them, Okay,
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: and that constitutes the spectrum of ice fishing activities out
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: at your whatever tip your right fingertip is ah No,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: it's a timeline that advances from SESS perspective. Let me see,
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: from SESS perspective, my right fingertip would be spearing northerns
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: and my left fingertip would be live scope and fish
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: through the ice. So what do you want to start with?
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: I'm asking you this, Jay uh Well, spearing, let's talk
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: about Sparing. I'll handle this one all right. Spearing, in
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: my mind is true ice fishing, pure, true ice fishing.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: Can you agree with that or not? What what do
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: you mean by that? It just feels like a long
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: time ago when you're spearing northerns now with ja sweet
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: camera set up. But we weren't. If we were, we
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: weren't gaining anything with jay sweet camera set up. He
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: might have been attracted to my camera. We don't know
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: if he came into the camera. He just that he
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: didn't eat the camera. I can't wait. Do you think
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I could? Can I put that up on social media?
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: You don't care y post it? I'll credit you. Can
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: you get me a better version of it? Yeah? So
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: we had a sweet camera set up, but it had
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: nothing new with us. It wasn't even it wasn't in
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: the dark house. It was just recording and it was
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: cool to look at it later. Spearing goes like this
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: and a lot of people already know. I'm gonna tell
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: you anyway, Um, you are drill a hole of staggering
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: proportions through the ice, Mandy. Mandy said she's been around
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: a lot of ice fishing activity. She has never seen
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: a spear hold as big as the one we made,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: and I blame but Mandy has a giant augur, and
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: I normally think in my head like I'm gonna go
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: five augurs wide and three aggers deep. And that's what
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: I did, except yeah, and she fell in. She would
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: need to hit the sides. She could have fell in
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: horizontal and not hit the sides. So uh yeah, So
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: you like it used to be hard to make a
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: spear hole, but it's like with good augers, it's pretty
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: easy make a spear hole. You just make a bunch
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: of holes and you kind of butt them right up
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: to each other, and sometimes they'll overlap her, sometimes not.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: And you take an ice saw and connect all the holes.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: And you can do one of two things, depending on
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: where you're at and what you're supposed to do where
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: you're at um and I think it depends a little
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: bit on weather. You can either take that block and
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: each has its pros and cons. You can take that
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: block and shove it under the ice, sink in the cake,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: that's what they call it. You can sink the cake
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: or you can what you what do you call when
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: you drag it up on the ice, eat the cake,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: Eat the cake. You can't eat your cake and sink
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: it to j so uh um, pushing it down has
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: to be the most common. Yeah, I'm trying. Is it is?
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: It as like Eskimo makes the I have a bunch
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: of them, the Eskimo or I know that makes the screws,
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: the handle screws. So there's there's a screw you can
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: use to like anchor your your fish, sandy to the
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: ice or whatever you need to anchor to the ice.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: It's a screw you can just drive into the ice. Um.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: And they also make h you can also get an
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: Augur attachment, like I have an eye on Augur, and
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: you can get an attachment for driving the screws. Anyways,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: when you cut this, so when you cut this puriphrey
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: of the hole out the spear hole, you have like
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: a large block of ice sitting there. Um. And the
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: old days they hook up the mules or whatever and
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: drag it up and put in the ice house packet
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: with sawdust. Then you have ice all summer long. But
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: that's not what we're doing. Um. To pull the block out,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: like my friends in Alaska, pull the block out and
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: they'll drive the they'll drive the handles, the ice crews
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: into the block and then you get then you push
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: down on it like you know when you go to
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: pull someone into a boat who's wearing a life jacket.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: How you go like down then up and you get
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: the buoyancy to help you get a little inertia. So
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: you get a couple of those handles there and you
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: push down and you got one. You drag it up
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: on the ice. The problem is the really cold weather,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: that block just freezes. It welds itself to the ice
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: and that's not something you want to hit with your Well,
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: there was a guy that got killed. He was the
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: guy was racing across the lake on the snow and
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: bill and hit a block ice and someone that dragged
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: out the frozen to kill the guy. Because the controversy
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: is the lake if if you have that open hole afterwards,
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: like you could potentially be open to manslaughter if someone
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: goes through that hole and dies. Right, It's like, I mean,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: we marked our holes, but that's a pretty important thing.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: It's if you don't mark that whole in a on
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: a warm day and it creates like a special thing
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: is on a warm day when it's not gonna seal
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: back up like we were on such cold weather that
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: you couldn't keep things open anyway if you wanted to.
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: But no, I don't want to drag it on too long.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: But there's all these different things. So what they require.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Here's a good way to discuss it. North Dakota, which
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: I'd like to credit the North Dkota Fishing Game Agency.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: They have very well thought ice fishing rules like fine
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: tooth comb and they lay out just to tell him,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: when you drill a dark house, if you have a
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: hole that's ten inches or greater, you legally have to
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: have a Dowell brightly colored wooden lay. I guess is
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: how they have it stated or a natural object to
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: mark your that hole and you have to have it
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: on you at while you're fishing, while you're fishing, and
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: I think it has to be clearly visible from fifty
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: yards und feet? Wasn't it clearly visible from hunter? Fil
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: defeat your marker? Um, so we sunk the cake. Then
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: what you gotta do is you need to uh. People
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: do it different ways. Like when I was a little kid,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: people used to like, so, well, you gotta put up
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: your shinny and you gotta have it darkened out. So
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: we use Eskimo shanties, and they got windows which are great.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: To open the window up like a plastic window. You
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: can open up. Let's sunlight, and when you're regular fishing,
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: but then you can vel grow the flaps up to
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: rule all the light because you gotta have it be
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: that you're in a dark structure. In fact, they call
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: it dark like they'll call it in the dark house
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: or dark house fishing. So you drill this big asshole,
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: you sit on a seat looking into it, and when
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: you're out in the daylight, you can't tell. You can't
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: see into the water. But the same way you know
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: when you put your hands up around your eyes and
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: look down into the the water, when you put the
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: shanny up and block all the light from coming in
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: and shovel snow around the edge and really get it
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: sealed up, it's like lit up like a TV screen.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: To see the bottom. We were young, we used to
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: put people would slice potatoes. If you're fishing in pretty
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: deep water, you'd slice potatoes real thin, or you'd boil
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: a bunch of elbow macaroni to get some white on
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: the bottom so that you can see the outline of
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: deep fish. We try to bed sheet once. That didn't
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: work too great. I can't picture that actually get it
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: to spread out properly then so they're gonna retrieve it
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: back out. It was so much work and it didn't
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: It didn't work. Thinking it was like you know, using
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: like organic matter, like sure, remember I remember eggshells to say,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: all your eggshells, crump them up, put them down the hole,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: just to get a little something to see what's going on.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: Pvc X. But people pull them out and white siding.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: Make an X in the bottom of the hole with
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: white side, then you can retrieve it. You pull it up, Yeah,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: just so you catch something coming across. And I'm gonna
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: say something real quick, So I said ten inches or
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: greater you have to market. It's anything greater than ten
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: inches has to be marked. So normal tenantogger hole you
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: don't need to mark. Yes, I was wrong, that makes sense.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Then so here you got this giant hole or whatever,
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: a hole, a big hole, and you got a dark structure.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: So you're sitting in the dark, which makes which illuminates
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: the bottom, and you're looking down in there. And then
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: you hang a decoy and you know you can get
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: as extravagant or not decoy's range from that you would
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: hang a pie plate or a beer can down in
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: the hole, hanging on a string so you can jiggle
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: it and create like a object of curiosity to fish. Um.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: We had a decoy um that that a guy made
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: for us incentence to us where it's like it looks
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: like a fish, it's got finns. It's like it's not
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: quite neutral buoyancy. It's like slightly heavier, so it slowly
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: sinks and you lift it up on a string like
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: a puppet. Let the string go in its circles. It's
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: real nice and shows a lot of activity sharp truce. Um.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: I don't know if they do it as much anymore.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I remember like people used to harness rig sockers. You
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: catch a soccer and harness rig of soccer and let
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: it swim around the hole to lure pike in. And
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: then but we used to you know, spear white There's
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: a variety thinks people spirit us spear white fish and
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: some other stuff. Um in some lakes aout of spear walleye.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: But it's generally like a pike thing northern pike. And
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: then you work that decoy. You know, you know you're
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: anywhere from You could be as shallow as four ft
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: of water, which is pretty shallow. You can be as
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: deep as thirteen fourteen ft of water, which is pretty deep.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: But let's say you're six to eight feet of water. Um,
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: you work that decoin. Just wait and wait, wait and
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: wait and wait, and eventually a Northern, if you're lucky,
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: a Northern, or many Northerns throughout the course of the
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: day are gonna come creeping in and they just sneak
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: up on that decoy. They like want to see what
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: it is. They might strike it, they might just nudge it. Um.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: And when they do, you have a weighted spear that
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: you need to hit him. It's hard, but you did it.
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: Things happened fast, tom Chester. Things that happened real fast.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: They were in different ice shack and I cut in
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: a little farther from him, and we had a d
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: Jay's decoy going and had I think four different occasions
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: where Pike came in and three of those no, two
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: of those times out of the four that Pike gave
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: us no chance to really spirit. It came in from nowhere.
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: I struck the decoy took off again. Was too good.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: I don't understand why people don't put hooks on their decoys.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: It's like, if your point is getting a pike to eat,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: why not put hooks in the decoy because you see
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: the decoy counsels the line. Anyways, Yeah, you know what
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: was interesting is I can't remember, was it man you're
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: j that made a comment about like do they grab it? Yeah,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: I asked you just before and I said no, they'll
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: I said, they'll kind of like nudge it, but they
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: don't like grab it grab it. Five minutes later, this
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: pike comes in and like really like grabbed them over
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: you to hook them, because I was like, no, they
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: like bump it, you know, they like they tap like
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: kind of like strike it. But this thing grabbed it
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: and sort of like rastled with it. That was cool.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: That was super. You look like an alligator trying to
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: tear a chunk off something when you grabbed onto that thing. Well,
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: I was staring at it slowly and you were ready
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: to throw, and then it went in charge mode ate
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: it and then I mean you had that shot just after,
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: but that would have been a tough shot to make. Yeah.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: I think it's um ah oh, I love it. And
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: it gets into the Bard we're talking about earlier like
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: sort of the cultural stuff, right, Like it's a and
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: there's a lot of states you cannot spear fish. You
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: cannot spear game fish, with the exception of dark house
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: Northern Pike. It just a thing. That's a way people
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: have targeted northerns for a long time. As much as
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: you can't spear game fish or gig game fish, um
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: in in northern States, it's like generally you can. This
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: is how we've always done it. And I think that
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: um in the future, if we're having a big old
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: fight about the allocation of the resource, I would think
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: that the live scope guys would need to ACQUI us
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: to the dark house guys. That was my That was
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: my segue into live scope fishing. Yeah, I mean I
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: I that was my first spear fishing experience and I
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: was like REVVD up. You know, I didn't get one,
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: but just seeing when it was cool. I mean, I
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: think there's they're, just like you said, different ends of
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: the spectrum. Because live scope for those of you that
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: aren't familiar with you know, can I gotta add one
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: making I'm sorry, just to tee it up better. Uh,
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: I should point out that a lot of people would
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: say it's really unfair to the fish to spear the
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: fish because you're not tricking him into eating. Yeah, it's
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: like some people might be like, well, what's the challenge.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: Now you're sinking a giant spear into a fish. It's
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: a chance, very barbaric, and you can't release them. Nope,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: it's like it's a blood it's bloodthirsty. I don't have
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: that perspective, but I just wanted to open up that
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: someone might say, Like someone might look and be like that.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: To me, that strikes me as unethical fishing because it's
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: like you're you know, you haven't tricked him. He just
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: passes through the hole and you jab a big spear
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: into him. Yeah that's got hurt. I got, Yeah your's.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: Yours died pretty quickly. But I mean, yeah, it's it's
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: depends on the size. Like I mean, you have a
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: little more of a chance when you catch with rod
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: and real tich choose if you want to release it
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: or not. Obviously you have a chance to decide if
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: you want to spear that fish or not. But it
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: happens pretty fast. You got to make a decision and
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: you might not have time to hum and hob between
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: a thirty five or yeah, that's what when I was,
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: when I was when I grew up in Michigan. Um,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: we're just fishing lake where just no that you don't
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: have a size requirement. So but when I grew up
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: in Michigan, at first, for most my life that I
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: lived there, it was mostly twenty one. Northern had twenty one.
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: It jumped up to twenty four. But as you can imagine,
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: that's a hard call to make. It's a hard call
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: to make fast, I would say, not just with when
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: you have introstrictions, like it's been highly controversial at Minnesota
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: where uh, certain lakes that hold muskie have been specifically
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: shut down into spirits and right because the normal joe,
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: even a really good anglers can to have a hard
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: issue and that split second, you know, is that a
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: pike or is that a musky? And just in the
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: last few years, like malax Cast, some of these ones
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: that hold really big, beautiful musky have now been reopened
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: for spirit. And it's highly controversial. Yeah, and that that
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: I imagine there's probably people to show up there that
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: aren't even aware that could be a thing, you know,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: and they're like Yeah, if you didn't, if you weren't
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: aware that was gonna be a thing, you wouldn't until
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: you got that thing up on the ice, you start
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: thinking maybe something was a little different. But yeah, it
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: would be a hard call to make. Wudn't trust myself.
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: I've seen a lot of pike, a lot of musks.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: If I'm seeing it from straight down view, yeah, it
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: would be some quick thinking. There are handful of lakes
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: right here in North Dakota that it's not legal to spear.
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: And so the weird thing is, uh, Spirit in North
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: Dakota has only been open for like twenty plus years.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: The first year that they opened it was in two
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: thousand and eight, two thousand nine, and it was actually
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: only open for the first two weeks in March and
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: that was it, and it was only open to residents
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: two thousan nine and ten. Um, it was the first
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: winter that non residents like Minnesotans could come in to
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: North Dakota and and spear, and then it was open
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: for like a month, right, So then fast forward, Um, no,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: it was twenty We're most of the state you could spear,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: but there still was not a statewide you know, spear
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: application for that, but it's yeah, so it keeps growing
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: and growing. But so they've been like tiptoeing their way
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: in probably wanting to see what the EVERS is going
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: to look like. Correct, So they went really above and
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: beyond and they have like unbelievable data. Like I'm fairly
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: impressed for their survey results here. So they did a
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: survey in one and they had four thousand, three hundred
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: seventy two uh individuals that registered four that were residents spears.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: There was over dred non residents that so yeah, they
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: have figured about sixteen thousand, six hundred pike were speared
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: from the people that they surveyed, right, So, I mean
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: they really dug down like a geek out about this
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: kind of sixteen thousand, six five Those guys are doing good, cracked.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: Here's like the average spear age was forty nine years
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: old and eighty eight percent of them were male. Uh.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: Seventy of the respondents indicated that they actually uh dark
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: house special. They must have surveyed like all of the
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: people that fishing licenses. So that's pretty high, right, like
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: that resident fishing license holders. You know, you sure it's
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: not that that all the people that got registered death.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: The percent that actually went so respondents indicated that they
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: actually dark house spirit. They're they're interviewing people that registered, um.
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: But yeah, it must be growing of those people that
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: took the survey, so that they had taken someone dark
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: spiring for the first time. Yeah, I mean that's really cool.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: They did a really good job with that spirit information.
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: I'm like, really high on North Dakota fishing game man.
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: They the stocking reports and netting reports are unreal. A
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: lot of transparency. M h. Good state, good place to be.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: There's a good place to be. And the Walley things
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: new too, which is interesting how they're becoming more open
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: to that. Like I think just last two years is
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: when they opened while I spearing on a couple of
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: weeks around here. Oh so they're like tiptoeing into dark
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: They're the same as live Scope. They're both at the
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: same time, all right. So now now let's get into
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: the live scope thing. All right. So I got real
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: mixed feelings. I want one bad, but I did get
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: a little bit of a guilty conscience. Because here's I'll
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: tell you later, go ahead and lay it all out.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: I'll tell why I felt guilty. So, like your typical
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: sonar whatever, you're getting an eighteen degree cone angle looking
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: down your hole. That's what you see. Use a lot
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: of analogies here. Yeah. So I mean, um, you're like
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: shining a flashlight down the hole and that beam is
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: eighteen degrees and whatever is underneath the flashlight like like
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: a Scooby Doo, like the flashlight that they always using
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: Scooby Doo. Yeah, exactly, like that, like a very precise,
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: very precise angle where it's like it's like utter darkness
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: meets utter light. Yeah, you got it. Um. So typically, yeah,
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: the fishing off the right under hole, you would see
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: him in real time. You can see your lure going
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: up and down, you can see the fish interacting. And
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: even that has revolutionized ice fishing. I think your your
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: catch trade, I would say, would be up three x
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: or four x. With that, I would turn if I
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: forgot mine, I'd turn around for a lot of like
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: not all fishing. Obviously spearing electronics isn't gonna help you much, um,
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: but if I've got my electronics, I would turn around
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: and go home. But live scope now is instead of
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: that eighteen degree angle, it's a hundred thirty five degrees
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: by eighteen, so you can decide how you want to
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: point it and stuff. But it's like kind of like ultrasound,
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: you're getting a real time reading. So I can be
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: looking a hundred feet off to the side, or I
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: can do a pan. So normally, let's say, for an example,
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: you're looking for for black crappie's in a basin, you
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: would drill that thing, you'd swiss cheese it right, you drawles,
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: and you'd keep hole hopping until you are marking fish.
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: Now with this live scope, you put this transducer down,
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: you drill one hole, and I can scan effectively a
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: hundred hundred feet or or more more in any direction
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: around me. So I just saved myself cutting forty or
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: fifty holes, and as well, you can see if those
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: fish you're moving. So when Steve and I were fishing yesterday,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: we have the transducer between us, and we had warning
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: before the fish came in, so like long warning, yeah,
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: long warning. So it's like it's like that trail camera
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: being set up, sending you a picture before it comes
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: you know, uh, you're not paying attention to all A
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: sudden look at the last cope and see, okay, Steve
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: there's a fish wi me towards you ten feet away,
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: and uh, you can see the size of the fish mood.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: It's mood. And there's the graph on there that you
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: can measure it how big the fish are. And that's
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: that's that's one of the coolest parts because normally you
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: get nervous when you're marking a fish. But when you
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: can tell it's a three ft fish or whatever, it
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: might be a thirty inch walleye, it's like it gets
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: your heart pounding in a different and you can see
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: it's mood. Man. Yep. You use like when they're on
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: the bottom, like slithering along, then you can see what
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: it likes. Yep. So you're sitting there and a fish
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: comes and he gets like it gives like, it gets
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: the perspective. He's right below your stuff, and you jig
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: it and raise it and he follows it and gets excited.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: And then you raise a little more and he keeps
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: following it, and you do it again and he hits
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: and you like tease him into hitting. Um. You can
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: try things on him. You can take his mood on
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: the drop it down and shake in the mud. Doesn't care.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna do this oh he's getting interested. I'm gonna
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: increase it's it's a scary tool and I've I've kind
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: of compared it to you what drones is to hunting,
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: and and because there's just no hiding anymore, you know,
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: the fish can't hide and you and I mean, my
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: favorite part of live scope is the learning tool that
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: it is, because now I can see, oh, those crappy spooked.
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: I caught one out of the school in the other
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: fifteen spooked away. Or I knelt down a little bit
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: loud and shallow water and I saw the fish spook away,
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: and it's like, that's my favorite. Obviously it's cool to
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: see the fish eat, but you learn more about the
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: biology and their general mood and characteristics. But it turns
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: into a lot of gear. Like like you said, the
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: spearing is super primitive, and now you're staring at a
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: screw mean all day. So it's like we go fishing
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: to get away from screens. Yet you and I are
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: sitting in the shack staring at a screen. So I
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: can see how some people don't like that. Like I
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: definitely get a lot of comments on my videos like, hey,
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: you're not even fishing anymore, and it's like, well, I
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: want I wouldn't say that that that's hard for me
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: because you know, you use it, but you know twenty
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: x the information that I would. I would say that
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: after having hanging out with you for a few days,
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: you you know twenty times more about fish and fishing
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: then your average fisherman. Thank you. So if you were like, dude,
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: I don't looking fish, but you're all there just slaying,
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: it winds up being like, you know a bunch about fish,
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: you know a bunch about fishing, You're probably gonna catch
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: a bunch of fish no matter what. And you use
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: that like a lot of that stuff goes that way.
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: It's like the same thing the guy who's like diligently
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: running a bunch of trail camps is probably a pretty
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: dedicated hunter. You always think that it's gonna wind up
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: being that that technologies are gonna wind up being that
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: any old Joe Blow can go do X. And maybe
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: that's the case, But I just I haven't like seen
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: like a ton of evidence story because I've generally seen
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: that like people that are already obsessed to become early
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: adopters on new stuff, and they were the ones kicking
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: they were kicking ass before, and they're kicking ass now.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: I don't think. I think you're probably underselling yourself after
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: watching you fish. Um, we're out there, like, what the
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: hell the temperature was? Like, I don't know. We've been
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: out in temperatures. The lowest I've seen is negative twenty nine.
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: The highest I've seen is four. Every time we were fishing,
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: it was in the negatives. What were wind gusts yesterday,
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: it's like sustained winds of thirty Yeah, the wind shown bow.
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: We moved four times last night. So that's not comfortable here,
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: It's it's manageable. Yeah, but I'm saying like you're still moving,
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: so there's still like a level of ambition, Like you
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: put that thing down and we don't catch any fish,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: we don't marketing fish, and we move. But it was
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: about like if you were fishing normally without electronics, that's
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: about when you would have moved, didn't get a hit.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: What it doesn't. It's like, I don't know, you might
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: be overestimating. It's like you might overestimate the impact because
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: I think that what it does is it's you'd probably
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: go through a lot of the same activities. Yeah, you'd
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: probably like go to an area, you'd probably try the
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: same baits, you try the same tackles, you try to
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: uh similar strategy, but there'd be more of a mystery,
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: like you wouldn't know that fish were down, but you
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: know you weren't getting hits. It speeds up, it speeds
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: up the search, but like you know, when you go
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: to your initial spot, you still need to know why
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: the fish are gonna be there, right, You need to
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: have that initial understanding of fish biology and being like, oh,
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: the walles are gonna be on tap rocks, Let's go
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: check deep rocks, and the live scope confirms, confirms or
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: denies that they're there, and then you move on. So yeah,
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: the thing I learned when I first started mess around
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: with electronics and ice fishing um beyond like a flasher,
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: but but putting lowering a camera down, which caused me
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: to have all kinds of other guilty feelings. Putting a
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: camera down I learned more about in the first couple
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: of days I fished with a camera down the whole
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: I learned more about the way fish behave in the
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: winter than I did from forty five years of ice fishing,
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: which is that I used to picture when you um,
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: we're fishing and not getting fish, it was that you
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: weren't on fish or they were turned off and they
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: were just like laying somewhere. I didn't know that all
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: day there are fish coming out of curiosity to come
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: look at basically kiss your thing and move on, but
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: come in like there's no motivation of hunger. It's like
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: they come and they're like, oh, that's what that is,
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: and stare at it, and come and stare at it,
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: and leave and come and stare at It's not always
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: little fish. I've seen big fish do the same thing.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: If you're banging the bottom, they in the silts coming
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: up that they come and nose around in that silt,
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: but don't eat anything. Oh I've I've played with the
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: fish for fifteen minutes before getting them to eat. It's like,
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: why did it take him that long to eat the
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: juicy meat in front of his face? I had like
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: that changed. Then it became in my mind what I
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: used to think was they're not around, or they're somewhere else.
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: They're laying low. There's sort of like this middle area
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: where they're very active, moving all around and are not
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: going to eat, but they're very interested in that. They
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: want to know what's going on. They want all that
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: noise was. They want to know what that movement was. Um.
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: And then there's like a competitive aspect they have. They
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: have like a little bit of there, like a little
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: bit like kids where one of them doesn't want something,
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: but when someone else wants it, they also decided they
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: want it. Like he'll stare at it his body. Yeah,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: he'll stare at his buddy will show up and then
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: he eats it. We see that in you know, open
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: water a lot with small mouth but I uce fishing.
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: You see the little panfish with blue gills or croppies.
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: You can get that school fired up and it's a
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: lot of fun. Then they get like, well I don't
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: want it, but I want him to have it. Frenzy. Yeah.
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: So um, let me ask you this, and do you
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: you you walleye fish and turn him in fish with
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: live scope? Yes? How many do you got? You have
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: two on your boat at all time? No? I only
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: have one? Okay, let me ask you if you gotta
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: be totally honest. Let's say, um, all of a sudden,
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: your local government, not your the fishing Game agency, says
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: all right, that's it no life scope old done illegal.
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: Would you breathe a sigh of relief or would you
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: be like, oh man, I'd I'd be I'd be pretty
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: mad you wouldn't breathe the sigh relief. I want to
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: learn as much as fish, like as much as possible
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: of fish. And that's why I got into scuba diving,
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: because I want to see them underwater and short of
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: strapping the scooby gear on the live scope is like
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: when you see that fish relating exactly to that boulder,
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: it's it's a pretty cool deal because that's what you visualize,
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: but then you actually seeing it, it verifies what you
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: you know, Yeah, what you've been thinking. I think you'd
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: be all right with it. I mean honestly, because it's
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: such a new technology, you'd be like whatever. Correct. And
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: right now we're actually already seeing it on the tournament side.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: So there's an ice circuit in Minnesota and they have
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: outlawed the use of life scope those tournaments. No go
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: you know what you know? One thing about it would
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: be like, let's say you're having an ice fish and
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: is ice fish is a blue collar pursuit, right, It's
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: it's just it just is right, it's a blue collar
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: pursuit um. And then if you're having like local derby's
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: and like the dude that can through connections or just
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: from having cash, the guy that can throw it down
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: five grand and a live scope. Right, yeah, people only
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: be like, well, how do I like in the derby?
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: How do I keep up with that? Man? I'm out
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: here with that with the axe and a you know,
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: I'm out here with the axe and cut down zeb
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: coo the tip of a zeb coo rod with a
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: real tape to the Ferrell. Now I get that, you know,
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: I get that. Man. He's like, whatever, she can live
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: without it. She's still catch fish. Jay's like, no, no, no,
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: it's not about catching fish. It's about learning about fish,
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: which I like, this is this is an element of
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: truth in that. Yeah, there's also a little bit of
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: fish catching in there. Yeah, don't don't, don't. Don't come
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: to me and act like it's not about catching fish.
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: Learning is nice. The catching is nice too. Seth just
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: likes every aspect of it. He loves free gear. No,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: he's got no free live scope. So you're saying, like
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: you just like are you know, if I had the money,
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: I would go right now and buy it. One of
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: the things I've found and this is something I like
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: about Seth. A lot A lot of people um mistake
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: jealousy for something else. They mistake jealousy for moral superiority. Okay,
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: so they'll see a live scope set up, and what's
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: going on deep in their psyche is they want one,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: but they don't have that kind of jingle laying around.
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: So what they do in their mind then is they
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: do a thing where they disapprove of it. Yep, I
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: feel that they disapprove of it, like, oh, you shouldn't
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: be able to have that. But what's really going on
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: is they're like, I gotta wish to add one of those.
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: But their body is, their brain is helping itself out
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: giving them a sense of moral superiority, which is it
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: feels for some people feels good. Jealousy it feels bad.
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: I have one of my kids, My kids have a
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: book about jealousy and they describe jealousy. The book describes
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: jealousy as a hot, prickly feeling. Seth is such a
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: pure individual. Listen to me, tell you you tell this
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: guy something, to tell him not to tell anyone. You
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: couldn't waterboarded out of him. Um. Anyways, he sees one,
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: he wants it, and he just says he wants one.
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: He doesn't act like he doesn't act like he's got
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: like moral like any kind of more old lemma. I'm
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: in the same boat with Seth. I want one real
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: bad but one of In fact, I think I could
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: say I lost not but one. One point that I
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: that I think of when it comes to that is,
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: over the past few years, I've gotten really good with
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: the technology that I have, right so, like down imaging
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: side imaging and being able to look on down imaging
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: and be like, pretty sure that's a walleye just by
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: the way you know, or like the size of the
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: fish compared to what you're seeing on the screen. Um.
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: So like if they took live scope and outlawed it
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: right now, I'd be like the playing field would be
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: a little more level, because we still have to you
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: have to put some time in to get good at
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: That's why that's why I opposed the Internet when it
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: came out, because I was good at looking up stuff
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: in the library and I could smoke anybody in the library.
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: And then they made the Internet, and then now any
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: time Dick and Harry and go find out stuff. And
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: I used to have a competitive advantage. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: Seth could probably take better pictures with his phone than
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: most people with high on cameras. You gotta you gotta
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: spend a lot of hours figuring it out, like, um, yeah,
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: it's not a play figured I know. Man, it's like
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: this kind of stuff keeps me up at night. Do
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: you know. I want to point out I know how
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: to close this out this trip I was catching we
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: sat down. Um granted, I had nothing to do with
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: picking the spots, nothing to do with picking the spots, Okay,
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: but um I was catching fish for you guys had
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: the electronics hiped up, you were, you sat down in
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: that first seat. But I didn't pick the spots. You know,
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: someone just like here fish this whole Steve's roping him
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: as I'm trying to get the transducer to work. He
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: did that to all three of us, just like the
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: other night. I don't know Steve well enough to like
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: give him grief right aways. But when you're on a
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: fishing trip and everybody starts casting before things are ready,
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: it's like, dude, slow down, Like when you know, especially
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: when the cameras are in enrolling that. That's my pet
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: peeve when I'm filming with somebody and I'm like, Okay,
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: I don't care what you do today, just wait to
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: get the camera set up. And then, just like my wife,
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: folks a fish right away. And it was like, Sam,
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: you could have just waited like a minute, but I
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: can't be match. You caught a fish, right, And then
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: she's got to pretend to be excited about the second one.
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: But you can never quite pretend that. Well, yeah, I
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: had some other thought. I was going to add about
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: this whole deal. The weather and everything was beautiful. Oh yeah,
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: all that stuff, but I mean more like, um, more
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: about the more about that. Yeah, you're enjoyed it, man,
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: I enjoyed looking through that stuff. It was a good time,
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: and I enjoyed Beetle enjoyed fishing you guys, sharing a shack,
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: sharing some hooksets, many fish with Yannie. Oh, I don't
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: know what's gonna add. Did you like fishing with Yanni?
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: That's a loaded question. No. I did love it, But
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: like somebody that just I truly felt like to his core,
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: he did not have a good time. He did not
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: like the cold weather, like he I think he liked
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: the experience and like it was kind of it was
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: so out of his willhouse. It seems so foreign to
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: him that he was just like you are you guys
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: are just insane, right, He's not like a born he's
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: not a born and bread ice an. Yeah, he's just
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: like you. You seriously do this for fun, Like this
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: is like a cultural thing where you live, where people
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: do this as a pastime. And I'm like, yeah, like
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: why wouldn't you, Like I don't understand why you're not
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: like excited and like see this, but I forget that
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: it is a cultural thing, you know, for for where
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: you grow up or how you grow up with what
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: kind of outdoor activities that are just part of everyday life.
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: So yeah, I know he was like it was cool
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: to have him to the house and the whole crew
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: and a really cool experience. I know. I was gonna
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: add a perspective that Callahan had about technology and ice fishing,
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: and he's not opposed to it, right, um, And if
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: someone was gonna be at probably him, but he's not.
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: He had a perspective like what happens to the psychology
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: of an angler, where he says you could be ice
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: fishing and having perfectly good time, but then someone shows
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: up with more Like someone shows up and that's up
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: next to you with more electronics, and cal says. The
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: feeling you then get is, oh, now we're fucked. Like
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: he said, somehow makes him feel like like it makes
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: him feel like he's not doing you know that he's
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: like doesn't know something or is not doing something right
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: or now this person is going to catch all the fish.
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: And he's not proposing that as something as anyone else's
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: problem but his own. He's just commenting on his own psychology.
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: That would be like when someone has that, then he's like, well,
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: now I'm screwed. The the key the key is to
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: never fish with that technology. Now that you fish with it,
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: you're screwed. If you'd never fished with it before, you know,
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: you maybe see clips online, but once you actually experience it.
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: I know, the people that have sat in my shack
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: or sat in my boat, it's like they've dropped that
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: money afterwards. And I'm guilty of causing him that, separating
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: Americans or Canadians from their money. Yeah, I'm sure Garment
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: likes it when you do that. What's the ice fish
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: m be mean that is one of my biggest partners.
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: That's ice Fishing Manitoba. That's their urs and brands. So
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: shout out Ice Fish MB. I'm Fish Manitoba getting a
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: lot of fun. Joy. All right, here's the final plug.

- 2:02:16Speaker 1: some catching cook walleye. We're gonna fry up some fish.

- 2:02:42Speaker 1: guys selling those like hot cakes. Yeah, they're sounding pretty good.
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: Folding fly knife, really nice job, thank you, thank you.
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: Those are kind of a pain in the ass, but
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: it's like you don't need to have the sheet. You
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: can put in your pocket without cutting a hole in
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: your leg. Um. Folding flat knife, high quality knife, beautiful craftsmanship,
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: thank you, Steve. Yeah, real nice knife. I going free.
- 2:03:01Speaker 1: But you know what, I would have bought that son
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: of a bitch man, I appreciate it. I would have
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: given you a discount code. Uh, Mandy, how do people
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: find you? They can find me on Instagram just I
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: don't have any crazy names like everybody else. I just
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: left it as Mandy Rick, so they can find me
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: on old school. Yeah, super old school. I still even
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: have a Hotmail account that's an m E N D
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: y U h R I c H. I've got my
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: pro account and my personal account on on Facebook. Or
- 2:03:29Speaker 1: they can find me on Instagram or will you accept
- 2:03:31Speaker 1: them on both accounts or just on the pro account? Uh?
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: Just on the pro account. And I will say, list
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: like Joe Blow who wants to come and be like
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: your body? You might not accept them on your personal account.
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: My personal accounts full. It's it literally, I'm Max so um.
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: I will say I've been struggling with Facebook because there's
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: actually a full account. They used my photos. It's my
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: name and it's they say that I'm from South Dakota
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: and Facebook will not take it down, like they will
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: not take that account down, and it's my picture like
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: my like everything, and they won't take it down. So
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: I've I've almost considered just kind of deleting everything off
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: there and just going to Instagram and everyone to report it.
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: Everyone's listening to the podcast report the fake account. Yes,
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: they're actually can report the real account, and your real
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: account's gonna get pulled. It looks for the one that
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: says that I'm from South Dakota, I am not from
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: South Dakota. That's the bad one. That's bad one. But
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: don't join it. Correct, don't don't go to that one.
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: That's not who's doing that? I don't know. And the
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: worst part is is they've got a lot of people
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: on there and I just don't understand. It's it's really frustrating.
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: It's weird to find that person and kick them in
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: a little berries. Thanks alright, Boddy, get the oil. We're
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: doing it. We're gonna replace the smell of a thawn
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: out northern with the smell of hot grease. There you go.
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: Thanks everybody, Thank you, Thank
