- 0:05Welcome to Professor Peterson's Psychology Classroom,
- 0:09connecting the science of human behavior to everyday life.
- 0:13Here's Dr. Curtis Peterson.
- 0:23All right, so if we were to summarize Whoops.
- 0:30Summarize this first part of class and what we're
- 0:34talking about,
- 0:36about being a good facilitator,
- 0:40we could put it in these 4 categories.
- 0:43And this is again just a summary, summary of
- 0:47everything. So being a good facilitator
- 0:51is first understanding the goals.
- 0:55This goes into the planning process.
- 0:58This should be the continued way you want the group
- 1:03to goal, go, go,
- 1:06or goal. I'm trying to figure it, got my words mixed
- 1:09up.
- 1:13And continue, and this one is important,
- 1:18and I do want to just spend a little bit of time on it just
- 1:22just a minute or two. Understanding goal,
- 1:26the goals, isn't just because that's the purpose of
- 1:30the group or that's what you're getting
- 1:33paid to do, okay?
- 1:36Understanding the goal is making sure that the group members will leave
- 1:41with skills and abilities that they didn't come to
- 1:45the group to start with. The other part of it is,
- 1:49is that it's about helping and keeping the
- 1:53group focused. Okay, in,
- 1:56in some groups you might be discussing
- 2:00things that then just make the group
- 2:04take a complete U-turn or a complete offshoot
- 2:09of what you're really trying to, uh,
- 2:12have the group focus on. Okay,
- 2:16and if you don't have a clear idea as a facilitator
- 2:20what the goals are, your groups can make a
- 2:24right turn all of a sudden, and you may go
- 2:28with that right turn instead of recognizing
- 2:32that we're getting off task and saying, okay guys,
- 2:35so this seems to be an important topic for you guys.
- 2:39And, but we'll come back to that later. Let's get
- 2:43back onto the path of what we're trying to achieve today.
- 2:48Okay, and keeping that in mind so that your
- 2:51group is most beneficial in
- 2:56that setting. Okay. Um,
- 3:01and then we've been talking about this and we'll continue to talk
- 3:05about this. But involving everyone,
- 3:09always trying to give the quiet person space to exist
- 3:14and setting boundaries for the person that wants
- 3:18to exist during the whole entire group.
- 3:22And getting that all,
- 3:26the whole group to be involved, keeping the
- 3:30group and the agenda moving forward. This kind of goes with understanding goals.
- 3:35We're there to Uh, for specific reasons.
- 3:39Um, and, and we have an agenda that we
- 3:44need to make sure we get through so that the, the group members aren't
- 3:48continually stuck in this cycle of non-growth.
- 3:53And then decisions are made democratically, going back
- 3:57to this as a group process. This isn't someone— this isn't where
- 4:02someone says we're gonna do You know, if you think about the education
- 4:05setting, and I, and I'm poor at doing
- 4:09this at the beginning of the lecture, but the instructor always starts
- 4:13with the learning objectives,
- 4:15right? And then the instructor
- 4:19goes through those learning objectives methodically
- 4:23through the lecture and
- 4:27doesn't leave any room for the class to say,
- 4:30hey, we want to talk about this more, or we want to focus
- 4:34on this, because they have to get through those
- 4:38learning objectives. While in the group,
- 4:41we need to provide room for understanding
- 4:45when the group decides that we need— they need to focus
- 4:49on that more, but also keeping us going
- 4:53through those learning objectives. And balancing those is
- 4:58a job, as we would say, of the facilitator.
- 5:06Okay,
- 5:10since that was a summary, I won't make you put in the
