- 0:00What if the person who hurt you the most is also the one
- 0:05teaching you the most powerful lesson of your life?
- 0:11Hello, beautiful soul. Welcome back.
- 0:15I'm Esther, coming to you from Switzerland.
- 0:19Today's episode is personal, raw and still a little tender.
- 0:26But the lessons that are still arriving, those are the ones
- 0:33most worth sharing. So let's go. 2 days ago, I
- 0:38called my father. He's 91 years old, a
- 0:43mathematician, A deeply intellectual man.
- 0:48He lives in an elderly home now, since my mom passed away because
- 0:54he couldn't live alone in their big house anymore.
- 1:00I haven't called him in weeks, and he knew it.
- 1:05The moment he picked up, the blaming started.
- 1:10He blamed me for not calling. He blamed me for the way I left
- 1:16at my last visit, and I sat there on the other end of the
- 1:22phone with my heart quietly shrinking back to a place I know
- 1:28far too well. I was the one asking questions.
- 1:35How are you settling in? Who do you sit with at meals?
- 1:41Do you like the food? I was showing up even on that
- 1:46phone call with care and curiosity, and he gave none of
- 1:52it back. Not one question about me, not
- 1:57about my health, not about my son's.
- 2:01His only questions were accusations. 30 minutes.
- 2:08I gave warmth. I received blame.
- 2:13The one question he did ask, the only one was whether I had
- 2:19spoken to my brother. After 30 minutes, I told him
- 2:24quietly I want to stop this conversation now, and I hung up.
- 2:32I sat in the silence after that call for some time, because this
- 2:38wasn't new. This has been the pattern my
- 2:43whole life, since I was 14 years old, fighting with my father,
- 2:51since he appointed himself my therapist and told me to bring
- 2:57him my problems and then used those problems against me.
- 3:05And earlier this year he told me something that broke me in a way
- 3:12I hadn't expected. At 63 years old.
- 3:18He told me he thought I was mentally ill and that he had
- 3:24believed this for a long time. The wound a parent can open, no
- 3:32other person on earth can open quite the same way.
- 3:39I stopped visiting. I stopped calling.
- 3:43Not out of cruelty, out of survival, because when my mother
- 3:51was in the hospital, I called him every single day.
- 3:56I made that drive more than two hours every week to sit with
- 4:04him, to be at his side for his final years.
- 4:10I wanted to be there for him with a full open heart.
- 4:15And yet, here we are. And if you want to know more of
- 4:21this story, the full, deep, layered story of growing up in
- 4:28this family, it is all in my book.
- 4:31It's called Living Without Fear. You can find it on Amazon in
- 4:37English and in German because that story deserves more space
- 4:43than one episode can hold. So here's something I want you
- 4:49to know about my about my father.
- 4:53In 91 years of life, he has never apologized.
- 4:59Not once. Not to me, not that I can
- 5:03remember. And yet I forgave him every
- 5:08single time. I always went back.
- 5:13I always opened a new chapter. I always tried again.
- 5:19Not because I was weak, but because I understood somewhere
- 5:25deep in my heart, that it wasn't really his fault.
- 5:31He never did the inner work. He never healed from his own
- 5:37family, his own upbringing, the generations of pain that were
- 5:43handed to him without anyone ever naming them.
- 5:49He didn't know what he was carrying and so he carried it
- 5:55and sometimes he put it down on me.
- 6:00You can understand someone completely and still not be
- 6:05willing to be there punching bag.
- 6:09These two things can be true at the same time.
- 6:14I want you to really hear that empathy and boundaries are not
- 6:21opposites. They are not in conflict.
- 6:25You can hold the person in your heart with compassion,
- 6:30understanding where they come from, seeing their bones and at
- 6:37the same time say this is not OK, I will not accept this.
- 6:44I deserve better than this. That is not cruelty, that is
- 6:51self respect. And I am learning at 63 years
- 6:58old with a 91 year old father that is never ever too late to
- 7:06learn this. So let me tell you what I'm
- 7:11going to do differently. The next time I call my father,
- 7:16I will tell him clearly we can have a respectful relationship.
- 7:23I will call you, I will visit you.
- 7:26I want to be in your life. And when you say hurtful things,
- 7:32when you speak to me with cruelty or blame, I will end the
- 7:38conversation every single time, without anger, without drama,
- 7:45without guilt. I will simply say this is not OK
- 7:51and I'm going to go now. A boundary is not a wall, it is
- 7:59a door with a lock that only you control.
- 8:05For so much of my life, I believed that love meant saying
- 8:13that loyalty meant enduring, that being a good daughter meant
- 8:20absorbing whatever came at me and not flinching.
- 8:26But I have learned, slowly, painfully, beautifully, that
- 8:33love without self respect is not love.
- 8:38It is disappearance. It is the slow erasure of
- 8:44yourself in service of someone else's comfort, and I don't owe
- 8:51that to anyone, not even my father.
- 8:57I do not owe Peace of Mind to someone who is not respecting
- 9:02me, full stop. And neither do you.
- 9:09Now here's where I want to shift something because I don't want
- 9:14this episode to be about pain alone.
- 9:18I want to talk about what my father is teaching me because,
- 9:24and this took me a long time to see, he's teaching me something
- 9:30profound. Through every fight, through
- 9:34every hurtful word, through every phone call that left me
- 9:40feeling small, He is making me stronger.
- 9:45He's showing me exactly where my edges are, where I still shrink,
- 9:53where I still go quiet when I should speak up, where I still
- 9:59carry that old story, the one that says maybe they're right
- 10:07about me. Maybe I am the problem.
- 10:12The people who push us to our edges are often our greatest
- 10:19teachers, even when they never meant to be.
- 10:25I spent most of my life with a quiet, exhausting background
- 10:31noise in my mind whenever I thought of my parents, a feeling
- 10:38that I was somehow bad, that I was the difficult one.
- 10:44The problem? Do you know how much energy that
- 10:49takes? Carrying that story for decades.
- 10:55And now, at 63, I'm putting it down.
- 11:01Not because the hurt is gone, it isn't, but because I can finally
- 11:07see it clearly. My father's words about me are
- 11:12not the truth about me. They are the truth about his
- 11:18pain, his limitations, his unhealed heart.
- 11:25I'm not mentally ill. I'm a woman who feels deeply,
- 11:31loves fiercely, and this finally, finally learning to
- 11:37protect that. And this is where it gets bigger
- 11:43than just me and my father, because I have two sons and they
- 11:49are watching. They are watching how their
- 11:53mother handles being hurt by someone she loves.
- 11:58They are watching whether she stays silent or speaks up,
- 12:04whether she disappears or holds her ground, whether she teaches
- 12:11them through her own life that you can love someone and still
- 12:17protect yourself from them. The patterns we break in
- 12:23ourselves we do not pass on to our children.
- 12:29My parents couldn't learn this. Their parents before them
- 12:35couldn't either. Generation after generation, the
- 12:41same wounds passed forward, like a gift no one wanted but
- 12:47everyone received. But that chain can be broken.
- 12:54It can be broken by one person in one generation, and it
- 13:00doesn't require perfection. It doesn't require that
- 13:05everything be healed and resolved and tidy.
- 13:10It just requires 1 moment of choosing differently.
- 13:17One conversation where you speak up instead of going quiet.
- 13:24One phone call where you ended with dignity instead of
- 13:30absorbing the hurt. One day where you choose your
- 13:35peace over someone else's comfort.
- 13:41I'm that person in my family I'm choosing to be.
- 13:46And maybe, if you're listening to this, you are too.
- 13:52Maybe you are the one in your family who breaks the pattern,
- 13:58who finally says this stops with me.
- 14:03Not in anger, not in bitterness, but in quiet, fierce, loving
- 14:10determination. I want to close with this.
- 14:16I would never have imagined that at 63 years old I would still be
- 14:23learning this lesson. That a 91 year old man could
- 14:28still have the power to make me feel small.
- 14:33But here is what I also know. He still has the power to make
- 14:41me grow. It is never too late to change a
- 14:46pattern. Never too late to speak up.
- 14:50Never too late to decide that you deserve respect from a
- 14:56partner, from a friend, from a colleague, from your own parent.
- 15:03It is never too late to choose yourself.
- 15:08Not in a selfish way, not in a way that closes your heart to
- 15:15others, but in the way that says I matter too.
- 15:22My peace matters, my well-being matters, and the people in my
- 15:29life, whoever they are, whatever they mean to me, they are not
- 15:36allowed to take that from me. Every step you take out of those
- 15:43old patterns, every moment you choose differently, even if it's
- 15:50messy, even if it's imperfect, serves you.
- 15:56And it serves every person who comes after you.
- 16:02Your children, their children, the whole line of people who
- 16:08will never have to carry what you choose to put down.
- 16:14Healing is not just for you. It echoes forward through time.
- 16:21So wherever you are in your own story with a difficult parent, a
- 16:28difficult relationship, a pattern you're trying to break,
- 16:34I see you. I'm right there with you.
- 16:39Still learning, still growing, still choosing, one conversation
- 16:45at the time. Thank you for being here today.
- 16:51Thank you for trusting me with your time and for letting me
- 16:55trust you with this part of my story.
- 17:00I'm Esther, your host, coming to you from Switzerland, where the
- 17:05mountains teach you every single day that standing firm and
- 17:12staying rooted is not stubbornness, it is strengths.
- 17:19If today's episode touch something in you, please share
- 17:24it. Send it to someone who is in the
- 17:27middle of their own difficult relationship and needs to hear
- 17:33that they are not alone, that they are not bad, that they have
- 17:41the right to peace. And if you want to go deeper
- 17:46into this story, into the roots of growing up in a family where
- 17:52love and hurt lived so close together, my book Living Without
- 17:59Fear is waiting for you. And Amazon, in English and in
- 18:04German. It is the full story, the honest
- 18:09one. And before I let you go, I want
- 18:13to offer you something that comes straight from my heart.
- 18:18If this episode steered something in you.
- 18:22If there is a relationship in your life that is costing you
- 18:26your peace. If there is a boundary you've
- 18:30been meaning to draw but don't quite know how.
- 18:35If there is a version of yourself you keep glimpsing
- 18:42freer, calmer, more at home in yourself, and you don't know how
- 18:47to get there, I want to invite you to a free coaching session
- 18:53with me, just the two of us. No pressure, no script.
- 18:59Just a real, honest conversation about where you are, what you're
- 19:06caring, and what your very next step might look like.
- 19:13This is the work I love most. Sitting with someone across from
- 19:19a screen, across from life, and helping them see what they
- 19:25cannot yet see about themselves. Helping them feel, maybe for the
- 19:32first time, that their peace is not a luxury, it is their
- 19:38birthright. You were not born to be walked
- 19:44on. You were born to be free.
- 19:48All you have to do is reach out. The link is in the show notes.
- 19:53I will be so honored to work this next step with you.
- 19:58Until next Thursday, protect your peace.
- 20:03Speak your truth. And know that it is never, never
- 20:09too late to choose yourself. With all my love, Esther from
- 20:15Switzerland for the world. Yeah.
