Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back.
- 0:14Speaker 2: What's going on everybody?
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Jeff Mosher, Adam Kaplan, and of course you know,
- 0:17training camp has started because we are joined by Inside
- 0:21the Birds dot COM's Andrew the Checko, host also of
- 0:25the Checko Daily podcast on Inside the Birds.
- 0:29Speaker 2: So between all of.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Us three we get covered with training camp Eagles training
- 0:34camp like nobody else. And so fellows, we're only two
- 0:37practices down as we record this podcast, and no pads
- 0:40and practices have been between seventy five minutes the first
- 0:43day and a little longer the second day. So a
- 0:45lot of today's this podcast, right, we'll go through some observations,
- 0:49but also any intel that we've gotten along the way
- 0:51and things that might be less x's and o's oriented
- 0:55and more big picture oriented. So there's a lot to
- 0:57talk about. And the cool thing is, Andrew, you're going
- 1:00to be at pretty much every single practice. I'll be
- 1:02at alternating practices, Adam will be at alternating practices, so
- 1:06we'll have you know, a diversity of viewpoints each each
- 1:09time we do a pod here, and Andrew, we're gonna
- 1:11try to get you involved in these as much as
- 1:13possible throughout the Yeah, good, good, so I just want
- 1:17to start off like a big picture, just because the
- 1:19Eagles got some good and bad news I guess health
- 1:22wise as they started the camp. The really good news
- 1:26was John Campbell being way way ahead of schedule, being
- 1:30out there limited participant for the first two days. I
- 1:34would juxtapose that though, and I want to start with
- 1:36this also, Kenyan Green, who's definitely an approven year for him,
- 1:41trying to, you know, a be a first round pick
- 1:44and be just win right guard and be a productive
- 1:46player on fifty three not even ready at the start
- 1:48of the camp, missing the first two days for the knee.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Adam, which one will start with you?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Which one is is a little bit more on your
- 1:55radar moving the needle one way or another.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Campbell being back or Green not even being out the
- 2:00first Campbell being back.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I mean, even if Kenyan Green was healthy to start camp,
- 2:05it's we kind of know Tyler Steen's job to lose.
- 2:08So that's a shame that he's dealing with this knee issue.
- 2:12But the big thing is Campbell's a minimum of two
- 2:14weeks ahead of schedule. That's really good. And with Nikobe
- 2:18Dean's situation, as you noted, a couple of months ago,
- 2:20the feeling around the teams, he won't be back to
- 2:22some time in October. We now have to start talking
- 2:25about your hot Campbell's potentially starting week one versus those
- 2:30cowgirls as an inside backer. That that absolutely is in
- 2:33play right now. That I don't like to make is,
- 2:35you know, hard statements after one or two days. In fact,
- 2:38I usually wait a week until we start making some
- 2:40evaluations of hard information, of hard news. But that's one
- 2:44thing at least have to talk about, is that he
- 2:46could be starting week one. It's it's absolutely in play
- 2:49right now.
- 2:50Speaker 4: All right, I'm marking this down. July twenty four to
- 2:51twenty twenty five. Adams sounded a little bit like an
- 2:54Eagles fan there, calling Andrew, I thought, just watching Campbell
- 3:00after two practices and you saw both, I saw one.
- 3:03My thought was, I'm really just looking for how this
- 3:05guy is kind of moving on the field. We already
- 3:08know he's got a whole playbook and.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Position change somewhat ahead of him, but just as far
- 3:15as fluidity, movement instincts, what did you say.
- 3:19Speaker 5: You know he's listed as limited, but I mean, from
- 3:22my vantage point, looked like he took every second team
- 3:24rep alongside Smile Mandan.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Junior the last two days.
- 3:28Speaker 5: You see the range, you see the length, and you
- 3:30see that he finds a knack for being around the football.
- 3:33I thought yesterday, oh, I guess it would have been
- 3:36the first day of training camp. He made a nice
- 3:38play on a crossing route to Danny Gray. Gray had
- 3:41a step. That ball probably could have been a little
- 3:44bit better, but he got a hand in there and
- 3:45you see the wingspan and the length and he deflected
- 3:48the pass away. He had a tough one today he
- 3:51was trailing, but Johan Dotson on a crosser. Johan Dotson's
- 3:54going to come up with that every time. Great pass
- 3:56from jaywhen hurts. But yeah, this is a player that
- 3:58I think is going to make an early impact for
- 4:00this football team. He's had a schedule and you heard
- 4:02Vic van Jay today kind of allude to that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, it's I made the same observation you did.
- 4:10I'm like, why are they considering him limited when it
- 4:13seems like he's out there with the second team every time.
- 4:16My guess is that because the pads aren't out and
- 4:19maybe there are a couple of things individual drills that
- 4:21maybe he didn't do. I don't know as they take
- 4:23it easy on the shoulder. But limited in this case
- 4:26carries a whole different connotation than our normal understanding.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Of what limited means. Remember limited, by the way.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Talking to mac Bond yesterday after practice, he noted that, yeah,
- 4:39he missed some time in the spring, which was significant,
- 4:42but it doesn't look like he's that far behind.
- 4:44Speaker 6: He mentioned that on after day one.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It's good.
- 4:47Speaker 3: That's really good. And remember with with limited, it just
- 4:51means less in what they would normally have scheduled for you.
- 4:55Right again, because he didn't really practice in the off season,
- 4:59he was taking mental re so I remember I remember
- 5:00watching him by it. You know, you he has allowed
- 5:02to do certain movements and you could see it's he's
- 5:06like mimicking because it's his knees were fine, that wasn't
- 5:10the problem. He just couldn't take any contact. So you
- 5:13take the metal reps and now you apply him to
- 5:15what he learned.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Now you got it.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Now, you know, we we didn't think we'd be talking
- 5:19about this this earily. I mean you got to start talking. Okay,
- 5:21let's see how this progresses. It's at least on the
- 5:24conversation now, and we'll see the way the rest of
- 5:26camp look.
- 5:27Speaker 1: For him, right, and Andrew, you've been noticing noting in
- 5:30your daily observations on Inside the Birds dot com that
- 5:32everybody should check out. That's your understanding that both with
- 5:35Campbell and Cam Jurgens, who's also been limited, it's it's.
- 5:38Speaker 6: More like it's a pitch, right that that's what it is.
- 5:41It's all part of the recovery process, so it's it's
- 5:44a natural progression.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Awesome, Great, let's start with offense, just as we make
- 5:50some some observations here. There's no pads out, you know,
- 5:55Adam and I talked about this in a recent pod
- 5:57and you actually wrote it to Andrew. Is that know,
- 6:00with AJ Dillon coming off of missing a year from
- 6:03the neck injury stinger related nerve that it would be
- 6:07smart to actually get him a little more action in
- 6:10the nonpad practices and just see how he responds. You
- 6:13have to crawl before you walk with this kind of injury.
- 6:16And it's stuck out to me in the second practice
- 6:20that he got a lot of carries for what's usually
- 6:22a passing camp. And Andrew, I imagine and Adam that
- 6:26they're really this is what they're doing. They're just trying
- 6:28to make sure that this guy can at least get
- 6:31through the first barrier of a comeback, which is can
- 6:34you get some carries? Can you get a little bit
- 6:36of not only called thud, but there is some contact there.
- 6:39You got to get through the hole, and can your
- 6:43neck respond positively to that? Adam we saw with Rashad
- 6:46Penny like they gave him work and that we just
- 6:49never saw saw him, you know, really manifest into what
- 6:52you thought he was gonna be. But I think with Dylan,
- 6:54you gotta at least get him these reps and see
- 6:57where he's at physically.
- 6:59Speaker 3: When we get to the second way is when you
- 7:01could do you can the practice cold be a little
- 7:03bit heavier. It's not so much how long they practice,
- 7:05it's what they actually do in practice. The heavy practice
- 7:08happened starting week two. We're gonna it shouldn't take more
- 7:11in a week to know if Dylan's back. No, what
- 7:13does that look like? It's a big dude, you know
- 7:15he the thighs are huge.
- 7:17Speaker 2: He's not.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He doesn't he Shipley's got the juice. It's they need
- 7:21volume from Dylan. If if Barkley can't play as much
- 7:24as we all love Shipley. He's explosive. Nobody's any idea
- 7:28how much volume he could have. This is a volume
- 7:30running offense. We didn't know that quite like we would
- 7:33learn last season. It was a crazy volume offense and running.
- 7:37And they're not gonna change, not as long as Barkley's here.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Andrew, I know Dylan is not a you know,
- 7:43his two hundred and sixty pounds. He's not like a
- 7:45guy who's gonna look like say, Kwon Barkley.
- 7:47Speaker 2: When he was running with.
- 7:48Speaker 3: The ball, the bark two sixty, he won sixty fifty.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'm sorry to fifty. I thought he was.
- 7:53Speaker 6: He's probably like two fifty.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a big, big dude fifty geez. Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So just watching him run does not look exp I mean, again,
- 8:02it's just Otia's but I wonder if he himself is
- 8:05a little bit just going at seventy percent speed as
- 8:08he tested, because when he gets when he did get
- 8:10the ball and you saw him run, it wasn't like,
- 8:12you know, wasn't what you typically see from a running back.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Now, but to your point, I think, you know, revving
- 8:17him up and getting some tread on the tires ahead
- 8:20of the pads coming on they're probably trying to gauge
- 8:22where he's at. I did think he looked a little springy,
- 8:25and I guess that's all relative when he bursts through
- 8:27the hole. But yeah, I mean he has a clear
- 8:30cut roll. We've talked about it. I mean, in a
- 8:31perfect scenario, he would be the closer or somebody who
- 8:35would fill in for Saquon should he have to miss
- 8:37any time, because we know that he can handle value.
- 8:40The question now becomes how how is he going to
- 8:42bounce back from missing a season with the neck injury.
- 8:44Speaker 6: We're gonna learn a little bit more in the coming weeks, all.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Right, Uh, let's talk a little bit more about big
- 8:50picture right now. With Jurgens on a pitch count, you're
- 8:53seeing Brent Toath getting some.
- 8:55Speaker 2: First team center reps.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I mean Jurgons is still doing some too, but then
- 8:59he comes out comes in Drew Kendall second team center.
- 9:02In your estimation, both of you, guys, how long do
- 9:05you think before Kendall is getting is considered the number
- 9:08two center? Because we haven't seen any issues yet in
- 9:11two days, but we know that Toath is not a
- 9:13guy who snaps the ball.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Well, probably next week I would out imagine that seriously though.
- 9:20I mean they drafted Drew Kendall to be the backup center,
- 9:24and in a perfect world that that's what he's going
- 9:27to be able to do. Take the you know, answer
- 9:29the bell and and prove that he can be the
- 9:31backup center. Bret Toath, We've seen this play out a
- 9:34couple of several different summers.
- 9:36Speaker 6: He's the veteran, he knows, you.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Know, he's familiar with the players on that line, so
- 9:41he gives you some stability in the interim.
- 9:43Speaker 6: But eventually I think that he'll get leap frog by
- 9:45the Brookie.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah and Adam. I think Toath was playing second team
- 9:48left guard. I mean they literally just put him wherever
- 9:51they think they need a body at that moment.
- 9:52Speaker 2: You know, Brent to He's played every position.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I know literally, I'm assuming both guard spots. I've seen
- 9:58him a line up at both tackle spots over his
- 10:01six year career on and off the Eagles roster.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:05Speaker 3: One thing with Drew Kennell is and this is from
- 10:07a scouting standpoint, because I know a friend of mine
- 10:08who has his area said, you know, he's really not
- 10:11a guard. He's not strong enough and not the greatest
- 10:15athlete in the world. But he's got good hands, he
- 10:17kind of knows what he's doing. Ideally, there are some
- 10:20other guys you probably want to be the backup center.
- 10:22He was just saying in general because skyworks for another team,
- 10:26so he's not He wasn't talking about He didn't know
- 10:28anything about Brett Toath. So I was like, I said,
- 10:30the dude, trust me. They want Kendall to be the two.
- 10:33But he said it's something they're going to have to
- 10:36learn over time. You can't just pencil him in. He's
- 10:39not that good. There's a reason why he was a
- 10:41fifth round pick, so we need to get there first.
- 10:44But I would say this, if they're not happy with
- 10:46Drew Kennell, I would assume they're going to look outside
- 10:48the roster. You can't be.
- 10:52Speaker 5: And by the way, Trevor Keagan is the third team center,
- 10:54and Trevor Kagan repped at center.
- 10:57Speaker 6: At the Senior Bowl and he can play all three
- 10:59in tiers.
- 11:00Speaker 2: It's important.
- 11:00Speaker 6: But I think that's something to keep in mind.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Watch that because Andrew you mentioned that a couple months ago.
- 11:04Let's watch that because I know teams were looking at him,
- 11:08were not looking at him as a center. But that
- 11:10doesn't really matter once you get the NFL. If this
- 11:13offensive line coach Jeff Stallin thinks you can do it.
- 11:17As we've learned, no one in the National Footbague thought
- 11:20McKai Beckham could play guard. Okay, no one except that guy,
- 11:23and he was right.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Now.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Interesting that I don't think he can took any center
- 11:28reps even in practice last year. I could be wrong
- 11:30about that, but I'm pretty sure played left guard, so
- 11:33it'd be pretty interesting to see his development there. All right,
- 11:36enough O line talk. Everybody else's hell. One of these
- 11:39days I want to I want to write a story
- 11:41for Philly.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Voice if I can.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I don't think we think about this, but if you're
- 11:46a guy like Kendall Right, or a guy like Miles
- 11:49Hinton or even Darien Kinnard who who played like every
- 11:52single snap of two preseason games last year, you might
- 11:56actually be a pretty good player. But you almost have
- 11:57a zero shot of ever playing on the Eagles offensive
- 12:01line unless somebody gets hurt because they are that talented
- 12:04from left right to center. I mean, like you're a
- 12:07fifth round pick offensive lineman, you've got a shot to
- 12:09make a fifty three or even start for a lot
- 12:11of teams in the NFL because offensive line plays so bad.
- 12:14But you come to the Eagles and you're hoping to
- 12:17put good film on and hope that someday you can
- 12:20get on the field.
- 12:21Speaker 2: But think about the likelihood of it.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Like my lot of very misses very little time, Lane
- 12:25Johnson misses very little time. Dickerson's three Pro Bowls in
- 12:29now your right guard, I'm sorry, your center just made
- 12:32the Pro Bowl in Jurgons with an extension. Really, only
- 12:34right guard is open, and you know, if Tyler Stein
- 12:37claims it, he claims it. So it's an interesting dynamic
- 12:40where I think most guys who are in their first
- 12:42or second year off for talent have a pretty good
- 12:44shot to see some time if they're playing for a
- 12:47different team.
- 12:47Speaker 2: But that's for down the road. I wanted to talk
- 12:50about the offense in general.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Adam and I Adam probably gets tired of me always
- 12:55saying that for twenty years of covering this team, I
- 12:58would say at least fifth team to seventeen of those years,
- 13:01the defenses ahead of the offense. There's always been a
- 13:03couple of years when the offense was ahead, but I've
- 13:06only seen one practice Andrew you've been in both. For me,
- 13:09it looks like the offense and it would make sense, right,
- 13:11the offense almost everybody's back. The defense is trying to
- 13:13replace half its starters. But the offense clearly so far
- 13:16looks like it's been more rhythmic, and Hurts looks like
- 13:19he's in really good comfort with Brown, Goddard, Smith, and
- 13:23even Johan Dotson.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Yeah, you haven't really seen a lot of explosive plays,
- 13:28but you've seen the timing and the accurate throws from
- 13:31Jay One Hurts. Yeah, yesterday's practice day one, it looked
- 13:34like Jay One and aj Brown were in mid season
- 13:36four pitching catch They just you can see the work
- 13:39that they put in off the field to make sure
- 13:41that's all dialed in. Johan dottson DeVante, Smith, Dallas Goddard
- 13:45had some nice catches today.
- 13:47Speaker 6: So yeah, that offense is, you know, as it should be.
- 13:51Speaker 5: It seems to be humming and the defense, which obviously
- 13:53has a lot of new pieces, is their working there
- 13:57to establish an identity.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I would actually say just from my own observation,
- 14:02I mean, Andrew talked about the crossing pattern that I
- 14:07think DeVante DeVante hit got hit on a crossing route
- 14:10between the numbers that was just past John Campbell right
- 14:15and he hit Goddard between three defenders. It was a
- 14:19beautiful pass and throw down the left scene between the numbers.
- 14:24I felt like I saw more between the numbers throws
- 14:27and completions from Jalen Hurts, and this one practice that
- 14:31we might have seen. All we ever talked about is
- 14:34how amazing it is that he can win games and
- 14:36throw for all these touchdowns without throwing between the numbers.
- 14:39I don't know if that was intentional, but if that's
- 14:42a development, that's a pretty good one for him and
- 14:44for the team.
- 14:45Speaker 3: So someone who worked with Kevin Btulo told me that
- 14:48he his offense will be a little bit more West
- 14:51Coast base than Kellen Moore. Klin Moore, No, He's one
- 14:55of the reasons why he lost his job with Dallas
- 14:57was because Mike McCarthy didn't run the kelln More system.
- 15:00He basically told the truth.
- 15:03Speaker 2: He didn't.
- 15:04Speaker 3: When Mike McCarthy got the head coach job and he
- 15:06inherited Kellen Moore, he had to give up the play
- 15:08callhim because Jerry Jones told him to. He didn't have
- 15:11a They've run completely different systems. Now you go to
- 15:14Philly with Kellen Moore. Kellen Moore runs a different system
- 15:16than Kevin Batula and Nick Sirianni ran, So there had
- 15:19to be a happy medium. Now Kevin Btulla is running
- 15:21the show, Kevin's gonna run tweak from last year. You
- 15:25can't completely change. It's not fitter hurts. There's gonna be
- 15:28You always know, every play caller has his own finishing
- 15:31touch on it. So on what you just said, I'm
- 15:34gonna look for that when I'm at Saturday's practice and
- 15:36and we all three of us, will do we notice
- 15:39any his hurts thrown a little bit more inside the numbers?
- 15:43Is there anything different from the raph combinations that they're
- 15:46gonna There's gonna be differences. We just gotta we gotta
- 15:48call it out when we see it.
- 15:49Speaker 6: Well, well, here's the thing.
- 15:50Speaker 5: Last summer there was a lot of that, and there's
- 15:53also a lot of passes to the running backs, and
- 15:55you didn't quite see that carry over into the regular seats.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Two years ago.
- 15:59Speaker 3: We didn't see it at all. Remember we saw Swift
- 16:01Andrew Jeff was there. There was one practice Swift might
- 16:04have caught fifteen passes, were like, oh, this is it,
- 16:07it's gonna stay and we never saw it, so you
- 16:09never know.
- 16:11Speaker 1: But that's a good point, Andrew, like, uh, and plus
- 16:14we have the defense. So for those who have never
- 16:18been to training camp at the Novacare Complex, the way
- 16:21they practice on the middlefield for reporters is that we
- 16:24generally see the backs.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Of the defense and the offense coming at us right.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So you it's hard with the defense in front of
- 16:32us to really see the offensive alignment. Like I was
- 16:35trying to see if Johan Dotson was lining up more
- 16:39in the slot or more outside, or if they were
- 16:42just you know, reduced splits, a type of different offensive
- 16:44alignments because he's catching a decent number of passes.
- 16:47Speaker 2: But it was difficult to see.
- 16:50Speaker 1: So it's just something that you have to kind of
- 16:51micro micro in on when you're when you're there. But
- 16:54he did looking rither and so to my point, it
- 16:57seemed like a lot of those throws were between the
- 17:00numbers and on target. But I don't know if it
- 17:03came against man or zone or looks that they normally see.
- 17:06You know, we know one of the issues last year
- 17:07for Hurts earlier in the season is like guys were
- 17:09right there in a zone and open and he would
- 17:12not throw it to them. Or aj Brown on a
- 17:14comeback on the even outside and he wouldn't throw and
- 17:16he would go somewhere else. I mean, at least for
- 17:19these practices, you see him getting getting rid of the ball.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Yes, definitely, just getting the ball out of his hands
- 17:24and making you know, smart decisions with the football. The
- 17:27football rarely hits the ground with Jaywen Hurts, I think
- 17:30today there was the will Shipley dropping the flat and
- 17:33then the play in which Zach Vond got a hand
- 17:35in to break up a pass to Devonte Smith.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Right, And I don't think there's been an interception or
- 17:41a turnover yet in campus.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Was there one day?
- 17:43Speaker 3: One? No?
- 17:44Speaker 1: All right, so that's good. Good for the offense. So
- 17:46offense ahead of defense. Why don't we talk about.
- 17:49Speaker 2: The defense first.
- 17:49Speaker 1: We're gonna pause real quick because you have to hear
- 17:52a word from our great friends at Sky Motor Cars.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Sky Motor Cars and Wet Guts.

- 18:00look at their highline pre owned vehicles. But people all
- 18:03over the country what the honor of bredge Older make true?

- 18:23two fives.
- 18:26Speaker 1: All Right, when you go into Skymotor Cars out there
- 18:28in west Chester, PA, please be sure to tell them
- 18:32that you know Adam Jeff because you.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Will get a great deal. Heck, tell him you know
- 18:35Andrew to check out too.
- 18:36Speaker 1: You'll get a great deal and you will not only
- 18:39get a great deal, but the greatest car shopping experience
- 18:42that you can imagine. Awesome customer service, awesome inventory. Definitely
- 18:46worth your browsing time on skymotor cars dot com. All right, Defense,
- 18:51there's a lot of different storylines on defense. So what
- 18:54did you make Andrew? We'll start with this the cornerback spot.
- 18:57There's two things to talk about here. One, there's Quinny
- 18:59on mit So and the fact that he's not just
- 19:01lining up at right corner, he's playing both right and
- 19:06left corner. And Vic Fangiel talked about which surprised me
- 19:10his history of occasionally playing cornerbacks in trail, not trail
- 19:14like following, you know, shadowing, traveling, Yeah, yeah, yeah, traveling
- 19:17with the number one receiver. And then obviously you had
- 19:21Dori Jackson starting on day two, where it was Ringo
- 19:24on day one.
- 19:25Speaker 5: What do you make of that, Andrew, Well, I'm expecting
- 19:28that all through the preseason until someone emerges.
- 19:31Speaker 6: So on day one, Keey Ringo had a tough day.
- 19:35They gave up a deep.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Shot to Tarras Marshall on a really perfectly placed pass
- 19:39from Tanner McKee, and then he gave up one down
- 19:43the other sideline to AJ Brown on what was like
- 19:45a jump off from twenty to twenty five yards out.
- 19:48That was a classic case of Jayalen Hurts and AJ
- 19:50Brown knowing where each other was going to be or
- 19:53where to place the football. There's not much Kelley could
- 19:55have done. He also got out muscled on the sideline
- 19:58by Tarras Marshall, who used a his body to kind
- 20:00of shield them off and really you know, pluck the
- 20:03football away from him. So today was Dori Jackson's term
- 20:07with the first team, but Kiely Ringo got most of
- 20:09the seven on seven reps opposite Quinyon Mitchell, So I'm
- 20:12expecting a lot of that mixing and matching throughout the summer.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and Adam, you've talked about, you know, the idea
- 20:17that this thing could look like a competition for the
- 20:20first couple of days like last year, and then all
- 20:22of a.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Sudden Rogers was the guy. So we've we've got a lot.
- 20:25Speaker 4: We'll glean a lot more in the next coming days.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I'm actually more fascinated by Vic talking about the idea
- 20:31of traveling Quinnon Mitchell. Not that Quinyon doesn't deserve it.
- 20:34He was great last year, but Vic plays so much
- 20:36zone I almost think that that that's sort of an
- 20:39approach that's a lot of coordinators don't want to take
- 20:41because they're not trying to telegraph their defense.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Well, we'll ask Greco sell this, but we know they
- 20:46are bottom five of man team. They just don't play
- 20:49a lot of man. That's the Fancier system. This is
- 20:51the way it is in terms of what their philosophy is.
- 20:55But to me, it's real simple. If they could just
- 21:00get enough quality play from whoever starts opposite at right corner,
- 21:06this defense still could could be good. Now, the other
- 21:08part of it is and Jay Exxon, who may not
- 21:12be on the field a lot of rush jumps because
- 21:13Ojeari has been on the field a lot so far.
- 21:16But if their pass rush is good and the right
- 21:19corner guys just hold the fourth that you don't have
- 21:21to be great the defense. I'm not saying it's gonna
- 21:24be as good as last year, being very hard to
- 21:26but the drop off that some people think and I
- 21:28get to talk because you've got at least five different starters,
- 21:32maybe the drop off won't be as as steep as
- 21:34people think it is. But again, we've got through two practices.
- 21:38We know Regine's gonna be on the field just seemingly
- 21:40maybe every snap. It seems like Vick Andrew is gonna
- 21:43figure out a way to make sure he's on the field.
- 21:45And by the way he's doing because he's maybe one
- 21:47of the top two or three best defensive players, you know.
- 21:50Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, he was safety in base again, obviously they're
- 21:53not in base hardly ever, a very small.
- 21:56Speaker 6: Percentage eight to ten plays a game.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, it's the second day where he was getting
- 22:01He opened practice as the safety opposite Red Blanket Ship.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm curious to see if he's actually going to
- 22:10be a base corner at all, because remember that first
- 22:13OTA or second OTA, it was corner in base that
- 22:17he started playing at, and then everybody made a big
- 22:19deal of it, and then the last ota it was
- 22:21safety in base that he was playing.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Hey, he did say no, if you really listened to
- 22:27him closely, he said something which I've been telling the
- 22:29Patreon people for two months. Don't just assume that if
- 22:33the cornerback position at the right corner position doesn't work
- 22:36out well at the lookoutside the organization, it's not out
- 22:40of the question. They play de Gene a lot more
- 22:43at corner than they anticipated if it doesn't work out
- 22:46with the other two guys, right, because remember they did
- 22:49draft him to play corner. I know they've moved away
- 22:51from that for the most part. Cooper we're talking about,
- 22:54but it's not out of the question that he wants
- 22:56up being the right corner. I'm not saying it's going
- 22:58to happen, but let's not just assume they're gonna look
- 23:01for make a trade. We know how he's got thirteen picks.
- 23:03I got to do something with these picks. But a
- 23:05lot of people just, well, well they'll just do what
- 23:06they did with Derby a couple of years ago. Yes,
- 23:08that's absolutely in play, but you got to get through
- 23:12this thing. People make a lot of assumptions there for
- 23:13two days. Yes, and you gotta be careful with that stuff.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Again.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Campbell's the one thing I would say him being back early,
- 23:21He's gonna get a lot of repsient inside back or
- 23:23let and you have to start talking about it because
- 23:25it's real.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Yeah, did you guys get a sense just listening to
- 23:30Vick who I think you can get a sense of
- 23:32how he feels about certain guys on how he says
- 23:34things that he's sort of intrigued by Mac McWilliams, who
- 23:37has been practicing at.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Both Slot and outside. Did Andrew did you kind of
- 23:41your Radaro company?
- 23:42Speaker 5: I jotted that down and I underlined it, and because
- 23:45that was, you know, on the heels of a practice
- 23:48where I thought Mac McWilliams, and it was only a
- 23:49handful of snaps, so I didn't put it in my observations,
- 23:52but I thought he did a nice job as the
- 23:55backup Nickel to Cooper Degene.
- 23:57Speaker 6: I'm curious to see where this goes.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm trying to look for the exact phrasing in
- 24:03the he almost you know how Greg cosel out of
- 24:06the way that a player has something in his body
- 24:09or has something there that that was kind of like
- 24:12how Vic described He said something like we need to
- 24:14really find out about him or something like that. Yeah,
- 24:17we'll flip for it, we'll find it. But I'm glad
- 24:20you used that terminology because I kind of did the
- 24:22same thing.
- 24:24Speaker 5: He has a chance to play corner and he's playing
- 24:26nickel right now. I just kind of jotted down some
- 24:29quick notes as he was talking.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Yeah, no, look, they were gonna they were gonna cross
- 24:32train him any anyway. But the way he said it,
- 24:35I think you're right. He seemed to be intrigued. Vic's
- 24:38a guy you could read into a lot like what
- 24:40he's thinking now. Again, like he he didn't want to
- 24:43criticize anyone in particular, but he thought he just laughed,
- 24:45he chuckled. You heard him talk about what some of
- 24:48the players said about Hunt, you know, comparing to Michael
- 24:51Parson's all that he just it's just not right, you know,
- 24:54you can't and right, not only that, I mean Hunt
- 24:59may not playing. He may not be he may be
- 25:01just a bass down player. He may not be playing
- 25:03a nickel at all. Who knows Yeah, yeah, because Jelari
- 25:06is a better pass rusher.
- 25:07Speaker 2: He just is. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 25:11Speaker 1: And Mac McWilliams. Here's what Vic Fangio said. This is
- 25:14a direct quote quote. Mac is a young player that
- 25:17we like. We think he can play the nickel position.
- 25:19I think he's got a chance at corner. He's an
- 25:22interesting guy here that these next four or five weeks
- 25:25to see how much the progresses and see if he
- 25:28finds a role with us. I mean, that's that's not
- 25:30like dismissive statement. He basically said, we're liking what we
- 25:34see both in two spots, nickel and corner, and these
- 25:38next four weeks are important from here. So I do
- 25:41feel like the wheels are churning in their mind. That
- 25:43to what Adam was saying, Like if mac McWilliams, if
- 25:46they can feel he can play it at a decent
- 25:48enough level to continue what they do on defense at
- 25:50the nickel, then maybe we see Cooper to Dejean play outside.
- 25:54Speaker 2: If they're not comfortable there.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I mean, I know we're far, but the machinations are there.
- 25:58Speaker 2: You can see it happening.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Way.
- 26:00Speaker 3: There's there's enough for mac McWilliams look at it, who
- 26:03would be the backup Nickel if mac McWilliams wasn't here.
- 26:06Speaker 6: Perry Nickerson's a journeyman.
- 26:08Speaker 3: He's here because he knows the system. He's not a
- 26:10great athlete, he's an older players, but he's been around.
- 26:13He's a journeyman. Okay, he's he's not a short spot.
- 26:16Speaker 1: But that's even a cheat, Like who would it really
- 26:18be if it was week five? Because Perry Nickerson's not
- 26:20making the fifty three So.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Maybe mccuba mccooba problem.
- 26:23Speaker 3: That's what he can do a good point. He can
- 26:26do it, but right now he's not quite doing that yet.
- 26:29Right at cornerback, we want to talk in vic Eas
- 26:33at cornerback, not Nickel, Nichols not a corner it's a
- 26:36defensive back at cornerback. If it's not Jackson and it's
- 26:41not Ringo.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Who is it.
- 26:45Speaker 6: Eli Rix?
- 26:46Speaker 3: I mean no, just this staff doesn't clearly showed you
- 26:50last year. He went from being maybe one of the
- 26:54top backup for the team when they first got here
- 26:57as soon as they got their hands on him down.
- 27:00Speaker 6: But that's.
- 27:02Speaker 2: I will say this.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I agree with what you're saying at him, but they
- 27:06had to make a lot of bottom roster moves last year,
- 27:08and he stayed on the team the entire year.
- 27:12Speaker 6: So I'm.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm trying to reconcile that they didn't love him
- 27:17enough to play him, but they didn't hate him enough
- 27:19to cut him either.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's not Vic's call. Vic does not have
- 27:22personnel control.
- 27:23Speaker 6: How he does.
- 27:23Speaker 3: It's how he's decision.
- 27:24Speaker 2: How he could have moved and didn't want to.
- 27:27Speaker 7: So I.
- 27:29Speaker 6: Think they liked him a little bit, but he's a
- 27:31cover corner. He did he can't help him on special teams.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Otherwise, he was only active for seven games, and in
- 27:37a numbers crunch like that, it could make some things interesting.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's really uphill here.
- 27:42Speaker 1: When you start counting defensive backs and you get to
- 27:45eight or nine before you get to his name, then
- 27:46it's gonna be it's gonna be really difficult, all right.
- 27:50Speaker 2: So let's sort of close on this year. This is
- 27:54gonna be a fun one.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Are we buying or selling? Well, let's for first point
- 28:00out the facts. The facts are that Jordan Davis I
- 28:04saw my own eyes. I mean, he looks like a
- 28:06totally different human being. He is down twenty six pounds
- 28:10to three twenty six pounds. He's at three hundred and
- 28:14thirty pounds the latest he's been I think, he said,
- 28:16since he was a sophomore at Georgia.
- 28:18Speaker 2: And he said, I made this change for two reasons.
- 28:22Speaker 1: One for life, because he's kind of acknowledging that being
- 28:25north of three fifty is not healthy, even off the
- 28:27football field.
- 28:28Speaker 2: And b he said, I want a bigger role. I'm
- 28:31tired of not I'm paraphrasing, but.
- 28:33Speaker 1: He basically said, I don't want to be off the
- 28:35field anymore on second and long and third and long.
- 28:38And I'll add to this that Vic Fangio was asked
- 28:41about Moro Jomo stepping in for Milton Williams, and Fangio
- 28:44himself said, yes, but those snaps will probably be made
- 28:47up by a conglomerate of people including Moro, Jordan Davis,
- 28:51and Ty Robinson. So you got to see it to
- 28:54a believe that, guy, Adam, are you buying Jordan Davis
- 28:57at least right now.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Being in contention to see more pass rush naps?
- 29:01Speaker 6: No, because.
- 29:04Speaker 3: No, because that's not what he is. He He could
- 29:06weigh two ninety, it could be two seventy. He's never
- 29:10shown the ability by technique to be able to rush
- 29:12the passer. Now, if he does it, we'll call it out,
- 29:14we'll see it. Well, yeah, you know what, boy, he
- 29:16had some really quality rushes when we were you know,
- 29:18because typically the way I go when I go to
- 29:20training camps, I take two positions and I I'll glance
- 29:23at others, but I take two positions that way. I
- 29:25feel pretty strong about what I saw. Well, obviously we
- 29:28check in with people and see what they saw. But
- 29:32it's just he's never shown it. I mean, he like
- 29:35you saw the great pass rusher Derek Carr was running
- 29:37for his life.
- 29:38Speaker 1: You know.
- 29:38Speaker 3: It's great in week three, but he's not that player.
- 29:41So it has noting to do with weight. I'm gonna
- 29:43bring it home again. It's about technique. Right when he's
- 29:47had he's it is not It is very I don't
- 29:50see nothing but very little to do with his weight.
- 29:52It's about using the proper technique now later in the
- 29:55game because of his stamina when he's too heavy, Sure
- 29:58he gets sloppy, but he's never shown the ability to
- 30:01really rush the passer. So to move this along, I
- 30:04want to talk about turns, smash. Before you get out
- 30:05of heres, we've got Oh yes, yes, yes, So I
- 30:07finish this off in defense on because I have a
- 30:09good nugget on Turch Marshall what we're done.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, I hear what you're saying, and I
- 30:14agree with you. I'm skeptical until he actually shows it.
- 30:17But some of those things that you're talking about can
- 30:20be improved and refined. And Andrew, if he were to
- 30:23really take the coaching and learn how to use his hands,
- 30:26learn how to use his body, learn how to play
- 30:28with leverage.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I still think it's tough.
- 30:30Speaker 1: For him because he's battling against career pass rushers. Interior
- 30:35rushers like Ty Robinson and Moro Jomo have been doing
- 30:37it that way for their entire life.
- 30:39Speaker 2: But you never know.
- 30:41Speaker 1: I mean, they're clearly picked up his fifth year option.
- 30:44They want to see it, and the coaches said they
- 30:46felt they were seeing it at the end of last year.
- 30:49Speaker 6: Yeah, you saw it in the postseason. That look, is
- 30:52he going to be a five to six sack of
- 30:54season guy. That's not what he is.
- 30:55Speaker 5: Adam outlined that he's more of a run defending tackle,
- 30:59But I think he has a little bit more in
- 31:01him than what he's shown.
- 31:02Speaker 6: And Eagles are certainly banking on that.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Jordan's taking this elevated opportunity very seriously.
- 31:08Speaker 6: He's showing up in shape last season he was as well.
- 31:11He wants to play more.
- 31:12Speaker 5: I don't think he's played more than forty five percent
- 31:14of the snaps in any of his seasons at the
- 31:17pro level, and the Eagles are certainly banking on him
- 31:19being able to make that leap.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Let me have this.
- 31:23Speaker 3: It's not so much sax. Sacks are literally individual plays.
- 31:26I'm looking for pressure, right, get your pressure rate. Make
- 31:28the quarterback move.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Don't sacks.
- 31:30Speaker 3: They're great if you get them. Just make the quarterback move.
- 31:33That's a win. That's a quarter that's a win. That's
- 31:35what NFL people will tell you, Right, if you make
- 31:37the quarterback move you want.
- 31:39Speaker 2: That's all you need to do. Right.
- 31:41Speaker 3: He's capable of doing that to a certain extent, but
- 31:44it's got to start with the technique. It's been mostly
- 31:48not good enough. I'll be nice about it. That's the truth.
- 31:51That's a football stick. Because I can tell you you've
- 31:53taught Jeff. Jeff and I have talked to a lot
- 31:55of the same people. We also talked to Greg co
- 31:57So on a weekly basis Greg, he's been Jordan Davis's
- 32:00hardshiss critic because it's all from the tape. He's also
- 32:03been he he's going out his way. Hey, I want
- 32:07to talk about what Jordan Davis. He looked really good,
- 32:08so going to make sure we talk about it. He
- 32:10just tells he only talks about what the tape tells him.
- 32:12That's right.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know that goes back to Georgia, where
- 32:15he observed that, as he phrased it, Jordan Davis is
- 32:19a power player but.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Not a strength player.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I meaning he has power, he can stalemate you, but
- 32:23he doesn't displace and move people consistently the way you
- 32:27would think a man built of his size and stature
- 32:30would do that. And I always thought that was a
- 32:31really good kind of colorful description for for people to
- 32:35be able to visualize.
- 32:37Speaker 2: I did. Nothing stood out to me from from day two.
- 32:40I mean, I thought he was I'm not gonna jude
- 32:44him off one practice with when they're on pads.
- 32:45Speaker 1: But nothing really jumped out to me other than his
- 32:48post practice press conference. Yeah, I know, And I think
- 32:53it's a little fair as an organization to sort of
- 32:57be disappointed that it took this long to hear him
- 32:59say I'm dedicated to losing this amount of weight. I
- 33:02want to be out there on second and long third low.
- 33:05That should have been like after year one when he
- 33:09got hurt and then they had to bring some other
- 33:10guys in and things like that. So I mean, better
- 33:13late than never, But I'm sure the organization would have
- 33:15rather have heard him say that.
- 33:17Speaker 2: You know, two years ago as opposed to now. All right,
- 33:21so that, yeah, that's.
- 33:24Speaker 6: Terrence Marshall.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I was just about to segue to Terrence Marshall,
- 33:27what'd you got cool?
- 33:28Speaker 3: So basically the book on him from when he was
- 33:31with the Panthers he was a flash player and then
- 33:34he would disappear and they got frustrated with him because
- 33:37he just couldnt be consistent at all. You saw, you
- 33:41could see the obvious town. He's long, he could run
- 33:44run after the catch really good, and then he'd disappear
- 33:46and he looked like a six round pick instead of
- 33:48a second round pick. Right. I think it was a
- 33:50secon round pick.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:52Speaker 3: So he's looked good so far. He had a good spring,
- 33:54by the way, so this might be like he's on
- 33:57his way to being maybe look the best he's looked
- 33:59at professional in terms of all season program. But again,
- 34:03we've only seen two practices. The all season's done already.
- 34:07He's got it, he's got to bring it. But there again,
- 34:09there's a wonderful opportunity for him here. They have no
- 34:12depth a receiver. It really it's Dotson's three, four, five
- 34:15and six er ticket. People want to put Johnny Wilson
- 34:17in the roster because he's a good blocker. Okay, that's fine,
- 34:19but Terras Marshall has no offense. It's way more talent
- 34:24than Johnny Wilson. He's just not a big giant body
- 34:27like Johnny.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say that Terres Marshall is that guy
- 34:31you want to watch, like in between the first and
- 34:35second preseason game, after your body's been through a lot
- 34:38of practices a preseason game, are you bringing it the
- 34:41same way that you were in the first week.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Dawkins used to talk about this all all the time.
- 34:47Speaker 1: You know, guys would look good and shirts and shorts
- 34:49and then the pads come on and it's not just
- 34:51the pads coming on. Then it's a couple of days
- 34:53of the pads being on and the body's collideing, Like
- 34:55are you still that dog, you know, two weeks in
- 34:59when it's one hundred and you know, and so that
- 35:02that's the guy we're gonna watch and say, was that
- 35:04the flash that Adam's sources alluded to? Or is this
- 35:08guy actually stringing together a really good set of practices
- 35:12and finally.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Living up to what he's going to be. What have
- 35:14you observed between him and I and anybody else? Andrew?
- 35:19Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I went into training camp with Danny
- 35:21Gray highlighted, but it's been Tarras Marshall that that has
- 35:24caught my eye really consistent when the boss come his way,
- 35:28got vertical a couple of times, strong hands on the
- 35:31sideline as I'd mentioned, prying it away from from Ringo.
- 35:35And yeah, I mean, Jalen Hurts has talked about him,
- 35:38He's praised him. Aj Brown has said that someone like
- 35:41Tarras Marshall can make the wide receiver room uncomfortable.
- 35:44Speaker 6: That was his word, and he said that that's a
- 35:46great thing. And DeVante Smith has also sort of gushed
- 35:50about him. So he has some support there and some familiarity.
- 35:53So I'm looking to see if I can carry.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Over all right great stuff.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Anything else and our observations Andrew you always good for
- 35:59a special team's observation?
- 36:00Speaker 2: Are we too early?
- 36:01Speaker 3: Uh?
- 36:02Speaker 2: In camp after two practices to make a special teams.
- 36:07Speaker 5: Avery Williams was back returning, uh, returning kicks today and
- 36:12that was weird that he didn't do another yesterday. Van
- 36:16Schumer and looks like, uh, you know, a wrecking crew,
- 36:19a one man wrecking crew. Healthy, right, he's fast, he's fast,
- 36:23and he's he's aggressive. And then I might say, like,
- 36:27if you want like somebody to look at in the
- 36:28preseason that probably is in a household name Taylor Moran,
- 36:32the wide receiver from Wake Forest. He was returning punts
- 36:35with a small group of players yesterday or day one
- 36:38when when the Eagles were it was an Isa Smith,
- 36:41Cooper Dejene, Taylor Moran. And like Giles Jackson, I believe
- 36:44not even in Avery Williams.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Nice any early candidates for you know, training camp Darling.
- 36:51It was like Sean Derek Owel I saw had a
- 36:53nice little run up the middle.
- 36:57Speaker 5: One of one of our one of our buddies. That
- 37:00say who they had him on the pre camp fifty
- 37:02three man roster. No, I promise you wow, No, no
- 37:09training camp Darling just yet. I think we have to
- 37:13get a roll for that.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Okay, just making sure.
- 37:16Speaker 1: All right, that's gonna how about we do this again
- 37:18next week after another couple of practices we rounded up.
- 37:20Speaker 6: I love this.
- 37:21Speaker 4: This is gonna be awesome, all right, Frandrew Tochecko and
- 37:23Adam Kaplan.
- 37:24Speaker 2: I'm Jeff Mosher.
