Transcript
- 0:00As part of Ferrari Fridays, William Ross from the Exotic Car Marketplace
- 0:04will be discussing all things Ferrari and interviewing people that live
- 0:07and breathe the Ferrari brand.
- 0:09Topics range from road cars to racing, drivers to owners, as well
- 0:13as auctions, private sales, and trends in the collector market.
- 0:28Hello, everyone.
- 0:29Welcome back to the Ferrari Marketplace.
- 0:31You know me, William.
- 0:33And I got my buddy and partner here, Eric, on the other side of this.
- 0:35And we're going to revisit, I guess you could say.
- 0:37We had a review of the Car Masters episodes being shown on Netflix.
- 0:42It kind of left it at a cliffhanging moment, which they really didn't
- 0:46go back into more into season six.
- 0:48They just went a completely different route.
- 0:49I don't know what they're thinking at Counts Customs.
- 0:51Oh, I mean, I'm sorry.
- 0:52Gotham Garage.
- 0:54So if anyone's watching.
- 0:55Every time I see their gates, it says Gothico.
- 0:57I'm just thinking it looks just like Count's Custom.
- 0:58Man, are they just like copying those guys or what's the deal?
- 1:01Picture it, January 2024 when Season 5 came out.
- 1:05This is the first time Car Masters has aired what I call the second
- 1:09half or the next season in the same year because we've gone so long
- 1:13between seasons you almost forget.
- 1:15you're like, Oh shoot, another season of car master.
- 1:18I don't honestly, till you said something about it.
- 1:20I had completely forgot about the show.
- 1:21It was out of my mind.
- 1:23If you're watching this behind the scenes of Patreon, I dress the part.
- 1:25I got my beanie logo and I'm looking my best Mark Towley.
- 1:29Right.
- 1:29I don't have the ponytail like he does, but you know, I figured I got to dress
- 1:32the part to get into the mood for this.
- 1:33I think that ponytail is real.
- 1:35No, I think he's bald.
- 1:36He's bald under there.
- 1:39Well, I guess you would say start with season five.
- 1:41It was absolutely horrendous what these people did to this 360.
- 1:45It just got even worse for season six that just got released.
- 1:49There were some Ferraris involved in the beginning.
- 1:51There's one at the end.
- 1:52We'll get to that.
- 1:54You and I talked about the green monster, the 360.
- 1:57And as you mentioned, the season ended on a cliffhanger, which now
- 2:00we find out is West Coast exotics.
- 2:03touring the dealership.
- 2:04And at the time, Nick Smith presented a package deal, this sort of ultimatum,
- 2:08all or nothing, get into the high end community with a navy blue Ferrari
- 2:13612 Scaglietti, and then a Ferrari 458 Italia that were supposed to be
- 2:18customized with no confirmed client.
- 2:20Bargain combo for the low, low price of 290K.
- 2:23And you're sitting there going, how the hell are you getting
- 2:25these two cars for 300 grand?
- 2:27That just doesn't make sense.
- 2:28Yeah, what's going on with that?
- 2:30So they left us there.
- 2:32Again, as my wife likes to point out when we watch the show together,
- 2:35it always sort of feels like half a season at a time is what we're getting.
- 2:39And okay, so be it.
- 2:41So when we start season six, we're sort of doubling down.
- 2:44We find ourselves Resetting the entire scene like all right guys
- 2:47forget what happened in season five We're at west coast exotics again,
- 2:52and we're presented with two ferraris and we're like wait What happened
- 2:55to the blue car and the black car?
- 2:57Now we got a white car and a yellow car and instead of a 612 and a 458
- 3:02We've got a F8 Tributo and a 488 GTB.
- 3:06Yeah, completely changed.
- 3:07Completely different car.
- 3:08But the deal remains the same.
- 3:10300, 000 for these two cars.
- 3:12And I'm scratching my head.
- 3:13Even my wife's going, one of these has to be worth 300, 000 by itself.
- 3:18There's no way.
- 3:18Well, that's what was baffling me.
- 3:20It's like, all right, is it got a salvage title?
- 3:22There's something more to that story on those cars that they
- 3:25obviously don't go into at all.
- 3:27If I walked into a dealership and says, Oh, you can have this basically
- 3:31three year old car and five year old car for a two year old grand boat
- 3:34that both retailed over 300 grand brand new, just a few years ago.
- 3:37It's not like they're depreciating that bad.
- 3:39No.
- 3:39I would have said done, but obviously there's a lot more to, Hey, what's the
- 3:43story behind these cars and whatnot.
- 3:44That's why I'm saying maybe they're salvatized and whatnot because their
- 3:47intent was anyways to hack them up.
- 3:49Which is true of the 360 that they modified.
- 3:52That car was an accident car, an insurance car, a repo car.
- 3:56It was missing pieces, bumpers, all sorts of stuff.
- 3:59So in that sense, it made sense.
- 4:00We're going to take a salvage title.
- 4:03Well, we don't need to rehash that.
- 4:04There's a whole episode on that thing.
- 4:06So again, we find ourselves at West Coast Exotics with this yellow
- 4:09488 coupe and a white F8 Tributo.
- 4:12And you maintain a Ferrari market value index on your website.
- 4:17And correct me if I'm wrong, William, the F8 is trending at 350 grand by itself.
- 4:22And the 488 is around 250 grand.
- 4:25How did they end up with a two for one deal of 300k when, to me, that
- 4:29adds up to basically 700, 000 in car?
- 4:33That's even under wholesale.
- 4:34That's the other thing, too, that was kind of a scratch in my head, because
- 4:37I would love to know what the hell the background story was on those cars.
- 4:40You know, you go look at wholesale numbers on that, That's still
- 4:43way, way under wholesale numbers.
- 4:45So it's like, what is the story behind this car?
- 4:47Again, they didn't get into it.
- 4:49So who knows, but there was no physical attributes looking at the
- 4:53car saying, well, okay, there's a ding here, scratch here, dah, dah, dah.
- 4:56There was really nothing very blatant saying, all right, I
- 4:59can see why they're so cheap.
- 5:00They look fine to me.
- 5:01So, I mean, unless they had a hundred thousand miles each on them and.
- 5:04That was a steal and a half.
- 5:05I mean, that was just a no brainer.
- 5:07Just taking those just to flip them.
- 5:09Yeah.
- 5:09They might've sat on them for a bit, but I mean, you're going to make money one
- 5:13way or another on those cars as we'll get into what they did with one of them.
- 5:16But that's still a head scratcher to me, how that came about.
- 5:19And no other things, baby.
- 5:20And again, that bean bowl wholesale.
- 5:22And even if those cars have been sitting there for six, seven, eight, nine months,
- 5:25you know, obviously just taking up space, how they have their dealerships set up.
- 5:30If they're doing floor financing or what they're doing on that, if they're
- 5:33paying a nut on that every month or smart way to do it is know you own
- 5:36everything because you pay cash.
- 5:38I mean, that's the best way to ever set up your dealership if
- 5:40you ever get into that industry.
- 5:41I don't know, maybe West Coast Exotics thought, well, hey, all right,
- 5:44put our name out there with this.
- 5:45You give us five, 10 minutes of the screen time.
- 5:48And that turns into, Hey, advertising, marketing for us.
- 5:51So we can duck this because, Hey, we're getting exposure.
- 5:54Cause you have X amount of viewers and whatever, blah, blah, blah, Netflix.
- 5:56I mean, I don't know.
- 5:57I think in Hollywood, they call that product placement.
- 5:59There you go.
- 6:01There's so many ways to skin a pig, right?
- 6:03Unlike the 360 that they trailered in, they drove both those
- 6:07cars and they're street legal.
- 6:08They ran, they seem to have almost zero issues whatsoever.
- 6:12Well, before we delve into these two cars, I kind of want to get into their mindset,
- 6:16what they're thinking in regards to, Oh, we're going to take our garage this way.
- 6:20This is what we're going to get more high end stuff that I, cause they
- 6:23think, Oh, we've struck the muddle load.
- 6:25You know, they just gaudied up this 360 and whatever rich meth
- 6:29head they got to buy that car.
- 6:31Is beyond me so they're thinking oh, we got this thing and you know, they made
- 6:34good money on the car So I was saying what they say 45 grand or something like that.
- 6:38Yeah in profit So he's got all his costs everything labor and that stuff covered
- 6:41in that and so there's 45 grand profit Well, you can't ignore that say hey We're
- 6:45onto something and I like that he had enough leftover paint that he resprayed
- 6:48his truck the same color as the ferrari.
- 6:50Oh my god Florida have mercy.
- 6:53Did you notice the corvette?
- 6:55That he had in the background that was also matching the truck.
- 6:57You know, it kills me.
- 6:58Is there a, Oh, and he's always saying, Oh, I'm the creative one.
- 7:00I have all these, uh, just let my juices flow.
- 7:02Give me creative control.
- 7:04I'm just going to do it.
- 7:04I was like, Oh my God, I've seen what you do.
- 7:06That'd be a nightmare.
- 7:07If anyone's watched this show, they're not going to give you creative
- 7:10control because it's horrendous.
- 7:11Nick should understand.
- 7:13I don't know if anyone's looked into his background.
- 7:14He's got a little dealership, you know, he delves into these little cars
- 7:17I mean, he's not all just Ferraris, Lamborghinis, stuff like that.
- 7:20He gets into lesser expensive products.
- 7:22And he's known for vintage bikes as his thing.
- 7:25Yeah, how he got dang this, who knows, but it was like no real
- 7:28thought and conversation was had.
- 7:31Nick understands that market, that industry, those clients in regards
- 7:35to how it's gonna work and what these people are and how they are.
- 7:38Those other guys, they had no clue and they're just kind of going off base and
- 7:41it seems like Nick should have sat down and had a very, very serious conversation
- 7:45with him and got him, I would say, sign off, but say, look, and hammered his home
- 7:49five, six, seven different times to him.
- 7:50Say, do you understand?
- 7:52No one's going to give you carte blanche unless they're just Incredibly
- 7:55stupid or as we'll get into with that McLaren in a future episode to
- 7:59someone's a youtuber They just want to get views and hits and whatnot.
- 8:02Yeah, that was a head scratch to me, too It's like oh my god They're just
- 8:05jumping in with just completely blind not understand us at all and thinking
- 8:09oh We're gonna make 50 grand and all these we're just gonna make these things
- 8:12look ugly as shit But anyways continue there comes a couple of points in the
- 8:17first half of the season where Nick is like look whatever you do Has to
- 8:22be not so much subtle, but it needs to be in line with the ethos of Ferrari.
- 8:27Because if you do something drastic, the value of the car is
- 8:31going to plummet significantly.
- 8:32That 350 grand that that Tributo is worth.
- 8:35If they just sold it at that moment, take a hundred grand off the car easily
- 8:39because who wants a highly customized F8 Tributo or a 488 GTB or whatever.
- 8:44Now let's get into his plan a little bit.
- 8:46Because I didn't disagree with his thought process.
- 8:50The execution is something else.
- 8:51Mark turned his attention on the white car.
- 8:55Satin white finished F8 Tributo.
- 8:58And they kind of parked the 488, which was in Jalo, which is yellow, off to the side.
- 9:02And they're like, we'll deal with that car later.
- 9:04Okay, fine.
- 9:05When he first shows the plan for the Tributo, I went, ooh.
- 9:09F40.
- 9:10I like this.
- 9:11I see where you're going.
- 9:12That's kind of neat.
- 9:13You know, wide body is his thing and big wheels and, and all that kind of stuff.
- 9:17I'm glad you saw that.
- 9:18That was just a total rip off of an F40 front.
- 9:21Yeah.
- 9:21And I was like, okay, I can live with that.
- 9:23Now the back end is always a problem.
- 9:25And we'll get to that as we continue talking about these cars.
- 9:28But the front, I was like, okay, I'm on board.
- 9:30I would love to see you do this, but how are you going to do
- 9:33this without destroying the car?
- 9:36And in my opinion, that would have meant taking the hood off, taking the
- 9:39bumper off, taking the fenders off, making it so you could convert the
- 9:42car back to what it originally was.
- 9:45But you're going to have to create an F40 clamshell from scratch.
- 9:48And I don't know that that was money and time well spent in that sense.
- 9:54They nipped that in the bud pretty quick.
- 9:56Nick turns around and tells him, the guy wants some vinyls, suspension
- 10:01adjustment, and he wants wheels, and a couple other little just simple mods.
- 10:05You could tell everybody was like, why are we doing this?
- 10:08What's the point?
- 10:09Which at that moment, my wife turns and goes, you know, sometimes
- 10:12it's okay to just be a tuner shop.
- 10:15If that's what the clientele wants and you can make profit on wheels
- 10:19and you can make profit on an exhaust profits, profit, exactly.
- 10:22So I didn't take issue with it.
- 10:24I do think it was a huge letdown because there was all this buildup to what
- 10:27they were going to do with the tributo.
- 10:29And it's like.
- 10:30Okay, well you added two vinyl stripes and you put on some actually kind of
- 10:33neat looking wheels Yeah, it wasn't bad.
- 10:35I liked them I did love that the gotham garage shield double g thing
- 10:40was glued on and you could see them like With 3m tape like putting it on
- 10:44you knew that was coming right off.
- 10:45Oh exactly.
- 10:46Yeah That's another thing too, you know, and you see a lot of those that
- 10:49you see on TV and stuff and do that.
- 10:50And you see it in this series too, putting their name, everything on that.
- 10:54And you're putting it out there, but you know, it's Gaudi's it up so bad.
- 10:57I mean, and that logo sticking up there on the front.
- 10:59I mean, that's a scenario where it's saying, Hey, do you mind?
- 11:02Hey, if we do this and this, and I'd be like, if I didn't mind, I'd be
- 11:04like, well, then take some money off.
- 11:06Cause that's advertising for you.
- 11:07Yeah.
- 11:07That is a weird situation to be in.
- 11:09Now.
- 11:09I do think that those Gotham garage emblems came off pretty quickly
- 11:13after the car was the West coast.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:16I did check their inventory to see if either of those two cars
- 11:20are still there, and they're not.
- 11:21Not available, not for sale, so whether they haven't updated or
- 11:24they took them down because the show is airing or whatever, but they
- 11:27don't list them as available there.
- 11:29So, the Tributo, all well and good aesthetically.
- 11:33Nothing drastic, nothing major.
- 11:35The Italian stripes, Lended more to like the Lamborghini performante,
- 11:39which came with those stripes from the factory is kind of the same
- 11:42idea, especially offset asymmetrical.
- 11:45Okay.
- 11:45Nothing really original there.
- 11:47That's fine.
- 11:48Now the exhaust swap was kind of interesting, but they
- 11:50didn't make that exhaust.
- 11:52They bought that exhaust.
- 11:53That was a bolt on competition replacement exhaust or whatever,
- 11:56which then they had issues with.
- 11:58Well, that's the other thing too, is they didn't get into this.
- 12:00Oh, we got the guys coming over.
- 12:01They're going to die.
- 12:02Not see what the hell is going on with it.
- 12:03Why it's coming up.
- 12:04Then they didn't explain, oh, here's what happened.
- 12:06So obviously, I guess they fixed it.
- 12:08Maybe it's just going into the ECU.
- 12:09So, but I mean, you have no clue.
- 12:11Swap two vacuum lines because it's a baffled exhaust and away they went.
- 12:15What clued me in there is when they called West Coast and brought the guys
- 12:18over to Quote unquote, fix the car or at least help them fix the car.
- 12:22My wife and I pause and we were like, so is this the new deal?
- 12:26They're going to be doing the tuning work for West coast because
- 12:29they don't do their own tuning.
- 12:30They're the dealership.
- 12:31They just want to flip the cars and sell them.
- 12:32That's not a bad relationship.
- 12:34That's not a bad side hustle to have.
- 12:36It's like, here's a bill of materials.
- 12:37That the client wants you guys take care of it.
- 12:40We give you three or four points on the deal and the margin on the
- 12:43parts or whatever, and away you go.
- 12:46But that's not what Mark wants, right?
- 12:47Mark wants to cut these cars up.
- 12:49Which is sad because it's like to Nick's point, it takes time.
- 12:52You got to build up.
- 12:53One, I mean, that's a great upsell for West Coast, because if a guy comes in and
- 12:57says, well, I like that, but I want some more zing to it, I'm like, well, hey,
- 13:00tell you what, this is what we can do.
- 13:02We have a partner we work with, what's your thoughts and ideas, and we can get
- 13:05it done for you and do the upsell, you know, and right there, the dealership can
- 13:08tack on crap loads of profit into that.
- 13:10And then, like you said, market stuff in the back end, but what happens is,
- 13:13is the dealer says, hey, this is who we partner with, so they know who it is.
- 13:17So.
- 13:17What do they do when they get tired of that after six months a year
- 13:20or whatnot, or they got all their hits and everything they wanted
- 13:22on their channels and Instagram.
- 13:23They go back to Gotham, say, Hey, tell you what, I need a new rap.
- 13:26I need this, dah, dah, dah.
- 13:27Then you all of a sudden you get in repeat business.
- 13:29And then now this person is coming direct to you.
- 13:31So you got the full boat, you know, on this stuff.
- 13:33It's very short sighted thinking and it's kind of like ego getting in the way.
- 13:38And especially how they have that set up.
- 13:40Cause that's the other thing too, is I know in the earlier season and
- 13:42how they originally set this up is, is they all share in the profits.
- 13:46Now, like these people are getting an hourly, nothing like
- 13:48that, unless they changed it.
- 13:49I don't know, but my understanding is they all share in the profits and whatnot.
- 13:52So this is all of them.
- 13:53Basically.
- 13:54It's like an employee owned shop in essence, ESOP, whatever it is.
- 13:57Profit's profit.
- 13:58And it's not like they got 50 cars or 20 car jobs lined up, and you can turn
- 14:02and burn those things in a day or two.
- 14:04Yeah.
- 14:04That's easy money.
- 14:05Buying the wheels, fixing the stance, the exhaust might take a bit, but doing
- 14:09the vinyl wrap, whatever on it, that's a day or two depending on the extent of it.
- 14:12And it gets them into that market.
- 14:14That's the thing that I just don't understand.
- 14:16He does not see it.
- 14:16And we're still just talking about the first episode.
- 14:19And one thing that Nick said towards the end of that episode is, And I
- 14:21thought it was code for something.
- 14:23You know, you could tell there was tension between him and Mark.
- 14:26Like, things weren't going well for a while.
- 14:28And you have to imagine, ten months has gone by.
- 14:31or longer since they shot and released season 5 to season
- 14:346 and all that kind of stuff.
- 14:35But Nick says, and he keeps saying, we got lucky with the 360.
- 14:39I was catching that too and I was like, damn straight.
- 14:41And that goes back to my comment, whatever meth head rich guy they got
- 14:45to buy that thing is, man they should have been thanking the man upstairs for
- 14:48that because god that thing was so ugly.
- 14:51You know, I, I'm using the word someone said on the show, they use that.
- 14:54And I was like, that is just sums everything up right there in that car.
- 14:57Cause it was just absolutely gaudy as anything.
- 15:00I mean, that's, I was just got stupid money and saying, ah, you know what?
- 15:02I'm going to be on the show and I don't care.
- 15:04I got dropped 160, 170 grand wherever it was.
- 15:07They sold it for, you know, and who cares?
- 15:08You know, he's just got dumb money.
- 15:09Look at it this way.
- 15:10A year later, we're still talking about the green monster.
- 15:13So, yeah, I mean, I, yeah, I guess.
- 15:15Yeah.
- 15:15What, what's that saying?
- 15:16It is all publicity is good publicity, even if it's bad.
- 15:19There you go.
- 15:20Yeah.
- 15:20Unless you're Diddy.
- 15:22Let's talk a little bit about the 488 sitting in the corner.
- 15:25We don't know what the heck's going on with this Jalo 488 GTB.
- 15:29That yellow is beautiful.
- 15:30I mean, and that's a factory colored car.
- 15:32Even that we makes it a little, I would say rare, but I'm not a fan
- 15:35of yellow Ferraris, but the 488 wears it well, which is surprising.
- 15:39You know what I mean?
- 15:40I'm like, ah, actually it looks pretty good.
- 15:42I think the 488 honestly looks worse in red.
- 15:44You know, if I had to choose between ketchup and mustard, probably
- 15:47go with the yellow in that case.
- 15:48Granted, I'm a big fan of gray and black Ferraris, but that's
- 15:51a whole nother story, right?
- 15:52We sort of pan left suddenly, and Nick shows up with a McLaren.
- 15:56Like, after the F8's gone, we're on to the next exotic, and I'm like, McLaren?
- 16:00Okay.
- 16:01Out of left field, all of a sudden, it's just, and again, they
- 16:03just drop the whole storyline.
- 16:06You have to guarantee that there's a lot of people watch.
- 16:08Well, what the hell happened to them?
- 16:09What'd you guys do?
- 16:10I mean, did you just sell them?
- 16:11It'd take you a minute and a half or not even just to kind of go in the
- 16:14storyline saying, well, Hey, you know, we whole set out or we did this or we
- 16:17gave it back to, you know, whatever.
- 16:19Tell people what you end up doing with the car because it's just hanging out there.
- 16:22They know they have the client and the customer.
- 16:24They dialed up the F8, which again, didn't turn out bad.
- 16:27Looked pretty good.
- 16:28But what did you do?
- 16:29You always see is Nick driving out with the car.
- 16:32That's it.
- 16:32On to the next one.
- 16:33Then there's McClaren.
- 16:35I knew something was up.
- 16:37Even my wife says this feels a little staged because of all the
- 16:40tape and the cardboard and all the stuff that they were mocking up.
- 16:43They weren't really working on it like they would something else.
- 16:47They started to do that with the Tributo as well, where they were like, well, this
- 16:50is where we're going to cut the fenders.
- 16:52And they weren't really, it was all just tape and magic markers,
- 16:54you know, that kind of stuff.
- 16:55I don't know if Mark actually knew this kid was a kid.
- 17:00What was he maybe 20 years old?
- 17:02YouTuber, TikToker.
- 17:04At best, if that, and you would think the kid must've been all hyped
- 17:08up on his Adderall or something.
- 17:09Cause I mean, he came in just all geeked up.
- 17:11I mean, he was thinking need for speed underground.
- 17:14It was like, we're going to put led lights and we're going to
- 17:16big wheels and wings and flames.
- 17:18And I'm like, Holy cow.
- 17:19That is Mark's target audience is the people that are really
- 17:23into, as my wife likes to call it.
- 17:24Hot Wheels cars.
- 17:26Yeah.
- 17:26And that's a shtick and that's fine.
- 17:28And he does that really, really well.
- 17:30But I was like, this is a new McLaren.
- 17:32Like seriously.
- 17:33And then Nick shows up with his dad.
- 17:36Yeah.
- 17:37And I, I'm gonna say it this way, shit gets real fast.
- 17:39Oh, gotcha.
- 17:41And you know, and you have to wonder too.
- 17:42And in that scenario I would put out some of that, blame a
- 17:45good portion of that on Nick.
- 17:46Nick had to have known the whole situation because I would have to
- 17:49say, I mean, I can't imagine some young kid like that came to me.
- 17:52My first thing to go, so wait, is this your car titled in your name?
- 17:56You can do what you want.
- 17:56Dad's not involved.
- 17:57Mom's not involved and get it clarified.
- 17:59Cause then if he says, Oh yeah, it's mine.
- 18:00Okay.
- 18:01Then you put it on the kid.
- 18:02But if he would just went blind, the kind of this kid reached out
- 18:04and says, Hey, I got a McLaren.
- 18:05I want to do this stuff.
- 18:06And just like, yeah, okay.
- 18:07We can do it, you know, and not really doing some due diligence.
- 18:10I'm at some egg on your face.
- 18:11I also feel like it was a little petty.
- 18:14My wife said it Felt like Nick was trying to prove a point to the crew because
- 18:19the dad was really open and transparent.
- 18:21That was not scripted.
- 18:23He was like, what are you thinking?
- 18:24The value of this car?
- 18:25Like he went on this tirade about, you know, not no way, not know how.
- 18:29And I was like, amen.
- 18:30And you could see when they would shoot Nick in the background, he had this
- 18:34cat eating the canary grin on his face.
- 18:36Like I'm making my point very clear that you cannot do what
- 18:40you want to do with these cars.
- 18:42These types of buyers are all going to be kind of cut from this mold, so pay
- 18:46very close attention to what he's saying because that's what they're going to want
- 18:49and that's what they're going to pay for.
- 18:51Another thing too, and again it's a missed opportunity because it kind of
- 18:53goes back to what they did in the F8.
- 18:55Someone could have stepped in and it should have been Nick.
- 18:57Tell you what, we obviously want to do some of this with the car.
- 19:00He wants to do this with it.
- 19:02Where's our happy medium?
- 19:03Okay, well let's not do all the fun stuff.
- 19:05What if we got into doing this?
- 19:06And again, it's baby steps.
- 19:08Putting the underground light in it.
- 19:09Doing a wrap on it.
- 19:10This and that.
- 19:10Putting some new wheels on it.
- 19:11Not getting too nuts and cutting the body all up.
- 19:14But you could do 15, 25 grand out the door and it cost you maybe 8 to 10.
- 19:18You know, hey, you could make some good money on it.
- 19:20But again, no one stepped in to do it.
- 19:21But to your point, it's Nick's in the background and whatnot saying, look,
- 19:23see, this is what I've been trying to tell you and you're not listening to me.
- 19:26And that's exactly where they went.
- 19:28And the other thing that my wife and I talked about was what happens when If
- 19:33this kid is driving his dad's McLaren, as we found out, and his dad goes
- 19:37off about like, how are you going to clear the driveway with the splitter?
- 19:39And how are you going to drive this every day?
- 19:41And it must be nice to, you know, be 20 years old and driving a McLaren every day.
- 19:44And that's fine.
- 19:45Real world problems.
- 19:46To each their own.
- 19:47But my wife said, what if that kid, God forbid, got into an
- 19:51accident with a modified McLaren?
- 19:54How does the insurance company handle that?
- 19:56Where you've cut up the car, And now they got to replace big sections of
- 20:00the car with stuff that maybe didn't need to be repaired in the same way.
- 20:04Does it change the safety?
- 20:05Does it do this?
- 20:06Does it do that?
- 20:06So it's like, where does this rabbit hole finish?
- 20:09When you think about it from the perspective of I'm putting
- 20:11this highly modified car in the hands of a young driver.
- 20:15Obviously, you know, real world stepped in with dad standing there
- 20:17and pointing out all these things.
- 20:19Yeah, cause guarantee that kid driving around, he's going to
- 20:21crash it at some point in time.
- 20:22Be in the first six hours or first 60 days, it was going to happen.
- 20:25That McLaren, it's a beautiful car too.
- 20:28I mean, what else you'd really want to do that anyway?
- 20:30And the dad says that he says something like this car was
- 20:33perfection from when it left.
- 20:34The factory.
- 20:35And he's like, what are you going to do to it?
- 20:37Flare.
- 20:38Well, first of all, that's like two feet coming out that side.
- 20:40So you're adding another four feet.
- 20:42It'll be as big as a dually.
- 20:43It'll be ridiculous.
- 20:45I mean, that's just obnoxious.
- 20:47And again, it's just not being realistic in regards to that market.
- 20:51Yeah, it's a missed opportunity for them.
- 20:53It is the way they operate.
- 20:55And so now we're talking broader exotics and collector cars
- 20:58too at the same time, right?
- 20:59And so this is such a weird season because there's this interweaving of
- 21:04classic muscle hot rods, all the stuff that they like to do, you know, big
- 21:08military vehicles and all that kind of stuff, not to give away the whole season.
- 21:11And then we got these exotics and included in the exotics.
- 21:14I think was a bit of foreshadowing.
- 21:16You don't realize until the end of the season why they
- 21:19suddenly brought in a DeLorean.
- 21:20You're like, what the heck is this about?
- 21:22And to give it away is they're setting up this whole idea of doing nostalgia cars.
- 21:29At the end of the show, which we'll talk about another Ferrari, they
- 21:32hone in on, you know, Magnum PI.
- 21:34My wife and I were laughing about, you know, Nexus Knight
- 21:36Rider and the Flintstones and the Munsters and God knows what else.
- 21:39But the DeLorean is another nostalgia car.
- 21:42And so they did it almost like, it's like a litmus test.
- 21:45And it was really interesting because it goes right in line with what Nick
- 21:49was saying about these high end exotics.
- 21:51The customers want things a certain way.
- 21:53And when they did the DeLorean, Mark goes.
- 21:56The DeLorean community is very specific about the way they preserve these cars.
- 22:01You don't mess with the stainless.
- 22:03You don't do this.
- 22:03And the client was exactly like that.
- 22:05So what did they do?
- 22:05They wrapped it.
- 22:06And I'm just like, Oh my God, this guy is going to have an
- 22:09aneurysm when he sees this car.
- 22:11Oh my God.
- 22:11And that kills me.
- 22:12Cause I always go back to my mind and go, this guy thinks
- 22:14he's creative and he can create.
- 22:15Oh my God.
- 22:16It was again, fugly.
- 22:18Unbelievable what they did to that thing.
- 22:20And they put the exhaust on.
- 22:21Okay.
- 22:21It did sound a little bit better, but that thing's got 130 horsepower.
- 22:24Okay.
- 22:24You need to do something with the motor.
- 22:25If you're going to do something, but again, just do an aesthetic.
- 22:28And here's the funny thing is that almost went back to exactly what they
- 22:31did on the F8 just a little bit more.
- 22:34They put the air dam side skirt under tray.
- 22:36I mean, they did a little bit more, but it was basically almost the same thing
- 22:40they did with the F8 that they were pitching a moment about saying, well,
- 22:42we're not just going to be a tuner shot.
- 22:44I mean, I was like, well, you basically did that with the DeLorean.
- 22:46And I have to say that rear splitter was just.
- 22:49Oh my god, let's add some more weight to an already rear biased car.
- 22:53Yeah, I saw those brackets that they're putting on there to mount that thing.
- 22:56They had a quick shot of it and where it was, I'm like, wait a
- 22:59minute, that's just, oh my god, that's, he's just gonna kill it.
- 23:01That's so the owner can just unbolt it and throw it in the trash.
- 23:04Yeah, I felt so bad, you know, and the guys, You know, very adamant aluminum and
- 23:08Marge is like, no, we're going to wrap it.
- 23:09Screw it.
- 23:09We're going to do it.
- 23:10And so, and then that rap was just horrendous.
- 23:12And was the doc being nice for the show?
- 23:14Oh, it looks great.
- 23:15This and that.
- 23:15And then as soon as he got to take that shit off, it didn't do anything to it.
- 23:18No, I have seen some painted DeLoreans black and some other
- 23:22colors and they actually look really cool when they're done right.
- 23:25So I wasn't opposed to wrapping it because as my wife pointed out.
- 23:29If Doc doesn't like it, they can just rip it right back off the car
- 23:32and it's back to stainless steel.
- 23:34No harm, no foul.
- 23:35Painting is a bigger deal and painting stainless is really, really tough anyway.
- 23:39I've seen them in other colors and I think they look neat.
- 23:41The candy apple carbon fiber probably wouldn't have been my first choice.
- 23:46But then again, you're sort of limited on what that car
- 23:49can wear that it'll look good.
- 23:51I thought the wheel choice was bold, but it actually worked for the body style.
- 23:55Yeah, it wasn't bad.
- 23:56I don't know.
- 23:57It just baffles me each time you think he's being creative on this.
- 24:00Now, I'm not going to take it away from the people in the shop.
- 24:02No, they're awesome.
- 24:03Yeah, caveman is just a monkey just cutting stuff up and whatnot.
- 24:07Assembles things takes it apart and cuts it up.
- 24:08But you know the new guy Jake they kept he's really good the
- 24:11girl She's a great engine builder.
- 24:12She knows what she's talking about and the other guy, you know, he's babbling
- 24:15up metal work I don't like that.
- 24:17I mean he does some really creative things and what he can build I just don't see
- 24:21this creative that mark thinks he has my wife and I always enjoy the episodes
- 24:26where mark shawn and nick Are out of the way and it's just the crew working.
- 24:30And I'll just lightly reference the Humvee build with the biodiesel.
- 24:34And I was talking about that and I said, I love when Tony starts to talk and
- 24:38he's like the professor of the group.
- 24:40And he's like, look, guys, this is how it works.
- 24:42And if you do this and then the science of that, and we're going to take
- 24:44it over the machine and we're going to run it in the CAD and it's going
- 24:47to bubble up, dude, we're learning something like this is awesome.
- 24:49There's another show on motor trend and it's like one guy or two guys.
- 24:54And he's very like that.
- 24:55Yeah.
- 24:55He talks through the process.
- 24:56Why he's building it that way.
- 24:58Why we got to curve it like this.
- 24:59And it's super educational.
- 25:00Now it might not be exciting and dramatic, you know, less reality,
- 25:05television and more reality.
- 25:07Like the science of car building.
- 25:08I always appreciate when they have a build like that, where
- 25:11they can do what they need to do.
- 25:13It's still creative, but we're learning to your point, what they're
- 25:17doing and why they're doing it.
- 25:18Yeah.
- 25:18The DeLorean is this.
- 25:20Beginning this foreshadowing of this nostalgia thing that mark's got running
- 25:24around in his head You see it again with the kenworth semi truck and all that kind
- 25:28of stuff And I will leave that to the article that i'm writing that reviews the
- 25:31entire season But let's get back into the ferrari saga, you know talking about the
- 25:35guys what they're able to do So, I mean, I guess bringing mark's vision to life.
- 25:40Obviously there's episodes that go on between there's some stuff that
- 25:43happens changing up their thought process, some hiccups and whatnot.
- 25:46But we get to the next Ferrari, the one episode it ends, Mark and Nick
- 25:51have a conversation and basically states, Hey, we'll leave on good terms.
- 25:55Nick, you get something that comes about, Hey, let's work together.
- 25:58But you know, this is just not what we're going to do.
- 25:59So right there, you think, okay, that's it.
- 26:02Exit next stage left.
- 26:03That's it.
- 26:04You're not going to see him on the show anymore.
- 26:05How they do these shows, if they're scripted out, planned out, or if it's
- 26:09done, hey, they don't know what they're doing from two weeks to the next.
- 26:12I don't know, but you weren't going to hear from Nick at all.
- 26:14Uh, the blue all of a sudden he reaches out and says he has something of interest.
- 26:19I want to say it was a 78 or 79.
- 26:21It was one of the early ones.
- 26:22You know, it was a Ferrari 308.
- 26:23It looked like it was sitting for a while cause it was a bit dusty and dirty.
- 26:26But what is it?
- 26:27The guy that owned it obviously has a ton of money.
- 26:29He had a bunch of toys.
- 26:30Mark is trying to do this on his own because, you know, Sean's all of a sudden
- 26:35all jazzed up because now, hey, we're getting back to our roots, this and that.
- 26:38So he got his juices flowing again and everything like that.
- 26:40In the one episode, he starts working on this big package deal where we're
- 26:44going to build this and trade that and get this and work our way up.
- 26:47It's almost like work your way up to a Ferrari from a paperclip situation.
- 26:51So that's going on.
- 26:52They talk about, which you'll read about and see is Mark Finch is building a
- 26:56Kenworth truck that was kind of basically a tribute to his dad's truck that his dad
- 27:00used to drive back in the day for work.
- 27:02And he was very familiar.
- 27:03So he does that up.
- 27:04I don't know about that front grill, but it turns out pretty decent.
- 27:07So Mark's kind of working with Nick, Nick reached out to Mark.
- 27:09So he says, Hey, we've got something to work out now.
- 27:11One whole deal fell through on the Humvee.
- 27:13That's a whole story itself.
- 27:14And some people got to go to themselves, dig up these customers, this stuff.
- 27:18I got to tell you what, that's where a lot of these people act
- 27:21and aren't the way they think, especially when they have money.
- 27:23They just think, Oh, I'm going to hoodwink these guys and this
- 27:25and that and stuff like that.
- 27:26And you get really annoyed to them.
- 27:27And there's one guy in regards to this Camaro.
- 27:29They do a deal with that.
- 27:30I would have punched the guy in the face when he was trying to pull
- 27:33that with me, because it was just, that was annoying to me to go.
- 27:35This guy's just a piece of.
- 27:37You know what?
- 27:37But anyways, the one whole deal falls due on this Humvee.
- 27:40So that was supposed to get traded for the Jag that they were supposed
- 27:43to then all of a sudden work on and get into a six figure range.
- 27:45What they had in their mind, thinking it was going to be a 200, 000 car.
- 27:48You imagine what they would have done to that Jag?
- 27:51Exactly.
- 27:51Oh my God.
- 27:52That was in my mind going, what in the hell would they do to that poor Jag?
- 27:54I mean, that thing, as we all know it, you know, everyone says, Oh, Enzo said
- 27:57that's the most beautiful car ever.
- 27:58There's a bunch of debate at that, but it's a gorgeous, gorgeous car.
- 28:01You don't touch that.
- 28:02You don't do anything to it.
- 28:0363 Series 2 convertible.
- 28:06That's the perfect E type Jag.
- 28:07Like what are you doing?
- 28:08Exactly.
- 28:09And it's like, Oh my God.
- 28:10So that all falls through.
- 28:12So they're stuck.
- 28:13They have no project done going on.
- 28:14So Mark becomes the wheeler dealer.
- 28:16When Nick calls about this, he wasn't sure what he was going to do the truck.
- 28:19Well, it turns out, well, this guy is pretty eclectic in regards to
- 28:22what he likes to have in his garage, which you see when they go there, he
- 28:26brings the semi and basically ends up trading the semi for the Ferrari.
- 28:30You know, I don't know trucks, semis like that, value wise, whatnot.
- 28:33I know some of those older trucks like that, when they're done,
- 28:35they're worth some big money.
- 28:36So it's not like it's cheap, but I want to say the guy with the Ferrari, I
- 28:40think probably made out in the positive, because that 308, you could tell it'd
- 28:43been sitting a while, a lot of dust on it, dirt, everything like that.
- 28:46It did fire up, but service wise, I mean, that thing needed to be, you know, Gone
- 28:49through left, right, which is something else we can talk about, which they didn't
- 28:52even say anything about on this car.
- 28:54And so I went back to your Ferrari market index to see
- 28:57where the 308 GTSs are trending.
- 28:59And so obviously there's a lot of variables to that.
- 29:02Like you're saying mileage records, you know, condition that it
- 29:06have this option or that option.
- 29:07This is a U S spec 308 GTS.
- 29:09Cause the big park bench bumpers and all that kind of stuff.
- 29:12According to the market, 88, 000 for a 308 in probably pristine condition.
- 29:18So they were saying in the show, 60, 000 to 70, 000.
- 29:22The truck was probably worth 120, 000 to 150, 000 in that range.
- 29:25So Mark's like, I'm upside down, but it's going to take me months
- 29:29to unload a custom semi, which probably isn't far from the truth.
- 29:33So I think he saw his exit.
- 29:35And he's like, I'm going to take it in the shorts because we can
- 29:38continue to move the ball forward.
- 29:39And then a bunch of people got upset by that, but it's business, right?
- 29:42I don't think he made the wrong move.
- 29:44No, no.
- 29:45You know, and I applaud him for that because when you have a business like
- 29:48that, and you're the one running the show and it's you and the buck stops with you.
- 29:52Those are the type of decision and moves you have to make.
- 29:54They're going to hurt.
- 29:55What's more important, you keeping your toy or moving things
- 29:58forward to grow your business?
- 30:00Again, looking down the road, we're in the future.
- 30:02Okay.
- 30:03Once we get bigger, blah, blah, blah.
- 30:04Yeah.
- 30:05Hey, I'll buy another one.
- 30:06Isn't that?
- 30:06I applaud him for making that move because he left a lot of money on the table,
- 30:10but Hey, he got going and he got it.
- 30:13The body, everything on that car looked like it was in decent shape.
- 30:15Didn't look bad, but again, who knows service history wise or whatnot.
- 30:19My guess would be is that guy that traded it with didn't have it long or he just
- 30:23picked it up recently because when you see the guy's garage everything's got
- 30:26you think within the first two weeks that he has something he's gonna clean it do
- 30:30whatever so who knows how this guy got the car so but then they get it and lo
- 30:34and behold what happens is they show up at the shop with it surprising everyone
- 30:39else in the shop well okay now we're back to doing exotic so to speak if they want
- 30:42to call the 308 an exotic it was that curveball mark's sitting there and who
- 30:46drives it in Nick, that was kind of an interesting setup, but again, you know,
- 30:50being scripted, I would hope, or I guess you say realism, that they didn't tell
- 30:54everyone in the shop what was happening.
- 30:56Yeah.
- 30:57It should have surprised them.
- 30:58I would hope that's how they went about doing it because, get that
- 31:00authentic, Whoa, what the hell, I didn't think we were doing these anymore.
- 31:03Yeah, and Sean seemed legitimately angry, like, My wife and I both thought
- 31:07he was going to quit on the spot, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
- 31:12Exactly.
- 31:13I'm sort of tired of his style and I don't want them to replace him, but they
- 31:18need to replace him or they need to do this differently again, talking about
- 31:22the next season, if there is one, I think they are going to do things differently
- 31:25because this model of the negotiation and.
- 31:28The way they do things is tired.
- 31:30It's old.
- 31:30We need to move on from that.
- 31:32Now, Nick style isn't any better.
- 31:34No, it's different, but it's also cringy and it's just whatever.
- 31:37So yes, they show up at the shop and we thought that Sean was done.
- 31:41You can't fake that.
- 31:45Like he was visibly disturbed.
- 31:46And you know, and I don't know why, you know, honestly, because.
- 31:50When you have a shop like that, if you're going, all right, I got
- 31:53one person I only deal with, like this, and he works here, he's fine.
- 31:55I'm like, you're just setting yourself up fail.
- 31:57I mean, in this industry and doing especially that is you got to
- 32:00have so many contacts and whatnot.
- 32:03And who cares where the car or the source or anything came from?
- 32:06Hey, if it's going to work, you do it.
- 32:08And he should recognize that my reaction would have been, Oh, sweet.
- 32:11Oh, Hey, great job, Nick.
- 32:12This is awesome.
- 32:13We can do this and that.
- 32:14Who's this guy.
- 32:15We got it from, what's his deal, you know, and blah, blah, blah.
- 32:18Hey, what are the opportunities there?
- 32:19Again, very close minded and took it very personally, thinking he sucked at his job
- 32:24and he's going to get fired or whatnot.
- 32:25I had the same thought.
- 32:26I thought when he walked out that door, the next scene was going to be him,
- 32:29like, out in the parking lot talking to the thing, saying, Yeah, I'm done.
- 32:31I'm not going to be treated or disrespected, blah, blah, blah.
- 32:34You know, they sat down and talked it out.
- 32:36Something about him, I don't know, just seemed shady.
- 32:38I don't know.
- 32:38He's got that weird vibe, the way he goes about talking and everything.
- 32:41Just like he's hiding something, you know, it's like, I don't know what it
- 32:44is, but it just seems, and the way he has that talk and this and that, and
- 32:48the way he just goes about doing things, it's just like, Oh, it's sort of like the
- 32:52old wanted posters in the post office.
- 32:54You're like, did you buy a car from this man?
- 32:56I'm like, I don't think so.
- 32:58Exactly.
- 32:59So obviously the tension, you know, you got to have your tension and whatnot,
- 33:02your little trauma stuff for the show.
- 33:04But they get the 308 silver black interior.
- 33:07And as they do in the other episodes, as everyone that watches
- 33:10knows is they do the computer generated what they're going to do.
- 33:14Oh my God.
- 33:15Everybody loves to rip that whole thing off from the great British baking show.
- 33:19Like the artist's rendering of what it's going to be.
- 33:22Yeah.
- 33:22Then you start hearing the wife is getting this for her
- 33:25husband as a birthday present.
- 33:27So it's going to be a surprise.
- 33:28So there's no input from the person that's getting it.
- 33:30Hey, well, I want the Magnum PI, dah, dah, dah, this and that.
- 33:33So, okay, what are you, peanut red?
- 33:34Get into some little stuff to add to it.
- 33:36Oh, some Italian racing theme to it.
- 33:39But if you can, and she's willing to pay a little extra if you guys can do it and
- 33:43they like it, some inspector gadget stuff.
- 33:45Right.
- 33:45I.
- 33:46e.
- 33:46some James Bond stuff in his car.
- 33:47So like, oh my God, this is just, you start pictures, you
- 33:50shouldn't have, what are you doing?
- 33:51Then they go to the computer generated stuff and you're like, Wait, what?
- 33:54They're gonna do what?
- 33:56It's like, okay, maybe they're just exaggerating on the
- 33:58computer generated stuff.
- 33:59But then all of a sudden you see them, they're disbanding the car, taking
- 34:02out the ugly bumpers and whatnot.
- 34:04But then you see them put on the first fender flare.
- 34:06And I'm like, This to me was reminiscent of, I think it was season four where they
- 34:13did the Mako Shark C3 Corvette and they're widening it and you know the side pipes
- 34:19and the big flares and the big wheels and all this and in a very Hot Wheels style.
- 34:24Which, in some ways, I was on board with modding that C3 Corvette.
- 34:29And in the same way I was on board with modding the Ferrari.
- 34:32Because, like you said, is it really an exotic?
- 34:35It is the most mass produced Ferrari of all time.
- 34:38It's like the 944 for Porsche.
- 34:39It's what saved them from going under.
- 34:41You know, the same idea.
- 34:42So there's a ton of 308s out there.
- 34:44So I didn't feel so bad about them cutting it up.
- 34:47But there's a certain way of going about it.
- 34:49When you looked at the plan, as I like to call it, you know, the
- 34:51renderings air quotes in that plan.
- 34:54Yeah, it's a little bit shooting from the hip, but I was sort of
- 34:57thinking, okay, we were going to do an F 40 tribute with the F eight.
- 35:01Is he going to do a two 88 GTO?
- 35:04Is he going to do a three Oh eight evolution and like wide body?
- 35:08Is he going to try like this and that and the other thing?
- 35:10And they kept harping about, you know, we need to defuglify
- 35:13the car, all this kind of stuff.
- 35:15Yeah.
- 35:15You know, knock all the fugly off it is the exact quote that Mark uses.
- 35:19And I'm like, okay, so you get rid of the U.
- 35:21S.
- 35:21spec bumpers.
- 35:22You get rid of this.
- 35:23You get rid of that.
- 35:24Can sort of see in my head, maybe where you're going.
- 35:26And then it was again, like a carbon copy of what he had done before.
- 35:31And my biggest complaint with it.
- 35:34Is the unfinished rear fender quarter panel section.
- 35:38He has a tendency to leave the wheels in the back exposed and it just bugs
- 35:44me because it breaks up the shape of the car, but the front that grill, I
- 35:48mean, literally to use the rapper term, that grill, not the grill, it looked
- 35:54like braces on a teenager, like I didn't understand what they were doing.
- 35:57Because you only have so many options with the 308.
- 36:00You can very quickly make it look like a 288.
- 36:03You can make it look like a 328 with a square air dam front end.
- 36:08But I was like, what are we doing to this?
- 36:11Yeah.
- 36:11When it's all said and done, I was really actually happy
- 36:15with the front minus the back.
- 36:16The grill and the side skirts and like it worked to a point and then
- 36:22those scoops and that rear fender and I would have done the SS Camaro tail.
- 36:28I would have extended the rear.
- 36:29I would have exaggerated that.
- 36:30I would have brought it down.
- 36:31I would have brought it into the fenders.
- 36:33Like a bunch of other stuff could have been done to that.
- 36:36Well, like you were saying, I had the thought we mentioned before, you know,
- 36:39Liberty Walk does their kits and that, but what they do and a lot of these other, you
- 36:42know, do it is they don't just tack on a fender flare at the arch and that's it.
- 36:47So you got this thing just sticking out.
- 36:49Yeah.
- 36:49They take that whole panel.
- 36:51And shape it so it's all extended out one piece, i.
- 36:54e.
- 36:54a la, hey, looks like a 288, just on steroids, because it's bigger and beefier.
- 36:59Bigger and beefier to the tone of 14 inch wheels.
- 37:03Huge!
- 37:04That's why I was hoping, okay, it's got promise, because again, you
- 37:07know, have at it, do something really cool to it, really fatten up and
- 37:11do it, but They just tack shit on.
- 37:13That was it.
- 37:13I'm a fan of a wide body when a wide body is done correctly and a 308
- 37:19wears a wide body really, really well.
- 37:21If you look at even was a year or two ago, that SEMA 308
- 37:24that had the Honda VTEC in it.
- 37:26And there's been a couple other ones that have been done really, really well.
- 37:30And they look awesome.
- 37:31Now, I get it.
- 37:32Mark's going to do it in his style and he doesn't want to copy somebody else
- 37:35and this and that either, but I've seen some of the other stuff that he's done.
- 37:38And it's like, come on, man, like smooth it out, make this sucker, like
- 37:42just look menacing in a three awake and look really just diabolical.
- 37:46Right.
- 37:47And it can be a very James Bond car if you dress it up, right.
- 37:50But it was just like you said, it was sort of tacked on.
- 37:52And I think the problem came in when they had the wheels made for the car.
- 37:58And I don't know what the hell they measured, Because I think
- 38:01a 10 and a half or 12 would have been the maximum under that body.
- 38:05The first time he cut the fender, I said, we are so screwed, you
- 38:10know, because I looked at it and I said, there's no way you can turn
- 38:13into a parking spot with this.
- 38:14No, no.
- 38:15And even after they think, Oh, I think we're good.
- 38:17Oh.
- 38:17And then he makes the comment, Oh, even when it's turned at
- 38:19the suspension, it'll clear.
- 38:20And I'm like, I guarantee the first time that guy goes turning left.
- 38:24Or right into a driveway or something.
- 38:26It's gotta be and I understood what he was saying when you're turning The nose
- 38:31is gonna lift but that's gonna happen at speed But the problem is you're not
- 38:34thinking about the other side where the suspension is compressing and then cutting
- 38:38the tire Yeah, not only that they did the stretch tire thing like you see on
- 38:42a japanese import as well, and i'm just like They did as much as they could to
- 38:46fit the biggest wheel possible in there If I was building it, I would have gone,
- 38:50okay, do we have more space on the inside to have the wheel offset internally?
- 38:56Maybe put coil overs in there, get rid of the stock 308 suspension.
- 38:59Cause they didn't touch any of that stuff.
- 39:01And I'm like, there's ways to make space and fit a big wheel and it's
- 39:05not shoving it to the outside of the car and then cutting the body.
- 39:09Yeah.
- 39:10I don't know where they got their history lesson or whatnot
- 39:13in that car and that frame.
- 39:14That's just a metal tube chassis.
- 39:16Basically.
- 39:17There's plenty of room to go into that thing.
- 39:20So I don't know what he was talking about with cutting into the unibody.
- 39:22This and that.
- 39:23I'm like, huh?
- 39:24Well, I think for them, anything that isn't American style body on
- 39:27frame is considered unibody, right?
- 39:30Regardless of the fact that it's a tube frame car, regardless of the
- 39:33way those things were assembled.
- 39:34It's just, okay, well, it's a unibody in their world.
- 39:37Then you think too, and it kind of popped into my head.
- 39:40Okay.
- 39:40Maybe just because they're in a tight timeframe, they had 11 days to do it.
- 39:45That's kind of the other thing to this equation.
- 39:47Yeah.
- 39:47Now, if they had all the time in the world or hey, they had six months to do it.
- 39:50You go back to other episodes and see what they've done in the past.
- 39:53This is their MO.
- 39:54Yeah.
- 39:54This is just how they do it.
- 39:55I think even if they had six months to do instead of 11 days, it
- 39:58wouldn't turned out the same product.
- 40:00You know, it's unfortunate because that car can be something really cool.
- 40:04We've seen it out there, people posted and whatnot, great car to start with.
- 40:08It's super light.
- 40:10Two thousand pounds.
- 40:11It's got to get rid of the motor because you know, you got 210
- 40:13horsepower I think when that earlier one out of a three liter.
- 40:16Yeah, it's like yeah, it ain't going anywhere quickly But again, it's got
- 40:19kind of thing lightness thing, but it's again just about aesthetic So
- 40:22you could do something good with that.
- 40:23But again, they just tacked this shit on and it looks unfinished I'm
- 40:27thinking to myself too is they're lucky in the fact being that it's
- 40:30an old 308 Ferrari won't care.
- 40:32Yeah, if they would have done that with the newest, uh, been
- 40:34on their door with the cease and desist or something from Ferrari
- 40:37saying, what the hell are you doing?
- 40:38You're on one end like, Oh, this is not good.
- 40:42My wife's on the other end going, I want to hate it, but it's really hard
- 40:46to, she's still on her pain meds.
- 40:49She liked it.
- 40:50She saw they executed the vision.
- 40:52They did what they said they were going to do.
- 40:54Yes.
- 40:55It's reminiscent of that Corvette.
- 40:56And so I sit in the middle, I sort of love it and I hate it at the same time.
- 41:00Cause there's parts of it.
- 41:01I really like, I like the asymmetrical Italian flag paint scheme.
- 41:05I like the front end minus the braces.
- 41:08There's other pieces that I absolutely despise.
- 41:10I think the back is terrible.
- 41:12You know, I thought that just like the slot machine thing, the revolving
- 41:15transporter style rotating license plate was really cool piece of engineering.
- 41:19That kid's really good at that.
- 41:21Perhaps I've covered solutions for that.
- 41:22That was brilliant.
- 41:23They left that bare aluminum.
- 41:25And I'm like, that should have been black and blended into the rear end, you know,
- 41:28all this kind of thing, blah, blah, blah.
- 41:29So there's parts of it.
- 41:30I didn't like those parts.
- 41:30I like now going back and reanalyzing it in slow motion and in still to
- 41:36prepare the article where we review all this stuff in more detail, I
- 41:40noticed at certain angles, it really made it look like a second generation.
- 41:45Oh yeah.
- 41:45I Yeah, you're right.
- 41:46And I'm like, Oh God.
- 41:48And then in my head, I'm going, Oh, this is like the 308 Fiero builds.
- 41:52And it gave it this like kit car feel.
- 41:55And that's why I sort of sit in the middle because you're looking at it
- 41:58going, is that a real 308 or is that a fake 308 built on something else?
- 42:02And that's where it's sort of like, it's cool, but they ruined it.
- 42:05I don't love it.
- 42:06I don't hate it.
- 42:07But they did walk away with a pretty sizable payday on it.
- 42:10Yeah.
- 42:11They made some money up.
- 42:12You made the comment about the paint job.
- 42:14I don't know how close he looked at it.
- 42:15I might've paused.
- 42:16I think it was crooked.
- 42:18Yes.
- 42:18You saw it too.
- 42:19All right.
- 42:19So not just me.
- 42:20And when they did it, I'll say a closeup of it, but they got kind of close.
- 42:23It was almost like the one rear three quarter view of they got on it.
- 42:26It was a horrible paint job.
- 42:28It was almost like a rattle can job.
- 42:30My wife pointed that out in the night shots.
- 42:32She said that satin finish looks really neat during the day, but at
- 42:35night it almost had like an orange peel and it looked like it was
- 42:38unfinished, like they needed to spray it again and put some clear on it.
- 42:41Like it really did reflect very oddly in the dark.
- 42:44So I agree with that.
- 42:45And then to your point about the crooked thing, I joked and I said,
- 42:47is he trying to do what he did on the Camaro where the lines weren't straight?
- 42:51Yeah.
- 42:51Yeah, I guess that's cool.
- 42:52It looked good on the Camaro.
- 42:54Because again, that was an asymmetrical black on one side, orange on the other.
- 42:58I don't know.
- 42:58I think Mark's trying new things.
- 43:00I will say, and I've always said, which is what was disappointing about this car.
- 43:04He's a really good painter.
- 43:05Yeah.
- 43:06When you look at some of the stuff he can do, especially that Corvette,
- 43:09where he did that gradiated from dark blue all the way to silver.
- 43:12So it looked like a shark.
- 43:14I guess you could say that might've saved him a bit too, is putting all
- 43:16those gadgets on there, getting that extra 18 grand they made out with.
- 43:21You know a lot of things you didn't see the interior the same thing on
- 43:23the DeLorean when they redid it Yeah, they didn't show you the inside.
- 43:26No and supposedly they were supposed to redo on the door and it's
- 43:28all we're gonna We all love it.
- 43:29It's that then so you didn't even see it's just exterior tacking on some appendages
- 43:34Painting it and putting it out the door unbelievable, but that paint job was
- 43:38horrendous So again, i'm glad you saw it too because soon as I saw it on the
- 43:41road I go wait that line is not straight I mean, it's just blatant because you
- 43:44got red on white there and it just goes off at an angle You Sad thing is, is
- 43:49that theme could have been done a lot better, but execution wasn't there.
- 43:53Again, because of the time crunch or what?
- 43:55I don't know.
- 43:55The way it was painted with the color and stuff, that really
- 43:58accentuated, there was no flow to it.
- 44:00You could tell the shit was just bam, bam, bam, put on.
- 44:03It wasn't like they did anything to make it nice and smooth.
- 44:06And, and when they're saying, oh, we're going to eliminate that one channel
- 44:09that's going down kind of separate.
- 44:10And they ended up leaving that at the end too.
- 44:12It was like, Exactly.
- 44:13Whatever.
- 44:14So I don't know.
- 44:15That would have been a lot of Bondo in that crevice.
- 44:17Buckets and bucket.
- 44:18We're not ruining the episodes for you guys by telling you what's going on.
- 44:23It happened.
- 44:23If you haven't watched it, trust us, you need to watch it to see what it is.
- 44:26Cause then you're gonna be like, Oh my God, I see what they're talking about.
- 44:29Cause there's really no good thing to paint the picture.
- 44:32And I think we leave our listeners with the question, if you're
- 44:35going to modify an exotic.
- 44:37Especially a Ferrari.
- 44:39What camp are you in?
- 44:40And there's multiple lanes.
- 44:42You could be on the far left, like these cars are, just like they came
- 44:45out of the Hot Wheels packaging.
- 44:47Or you could be on the other side where it's, I'm gonna do some vinyl, I'm gonna
- 44:51put on some wheels, a sport exhaust.
- 44:53Where is your happy medium?
- 44:54Where's your comfort level of customization?
- 44:56And I think that's the moral to the story with a lot of this.
- 44:59And someone's creative vision doesn't necessarily always
- 45:03align with what you want.
- 45:04Your expectations.
- 45:06As a buyer as a collector and that's why I think some of the cars that are on that
- 45:09far left side are extremely hard to move.
- 45:12And it begs the question, where do they end up?
- 45:15Where's that green 360 after a year?
- 45:17Like who's got that car?
- 45:19Like I've never seen it at a show.
- 45:20I didn't see it at car week.
- 45:21I haven't seen it in a museum.
- 45:23You'd think it went up at like the Volo museum, you know, with all the
- 45:25other crazy cars that they have, but it's sort of like tucked in a warehouse
- 45:29somewhere never to be seen again.
- 45:31Yeah.
- 45:31Probably being converted back to a stock 360, you know, at this day
- 45:34and age, obviously with YouTube, Instagram, all your social media
- 45:37platforms, everything like that.
- 45:39If it's a well known car and put out there and the person that owned it got
- 45:42a crap load of followers, whatnot, like that, moving it to someone that just
- 45:47worships to whoever the person is and getting rid of it, usually isn't too bad.
- 45:51But beyond that, that's just a drop in the bucket.
- 45:53You see these companies that sell the kits and everything like that.
- 45:56For that one you see on a YouTube channel, there's 15, 20 other
- 46:00kits they sold to someone else.
- 46:02You're getting into the personalization programs these manufacturers
- 46:05have for all of them now.
- 46:07I mean, all your high end stuff, they have it because they can make
- 46:0990 percent profit on these things.
- 46:11It's unbelievable.
- 46:12You're getting it so specific in regards to your own taste.
- 46:16What are you going to do with yourself?
- 46:17Because you're going to have to find that person.
- 46:19OK, I can live with half the stock three quarter stuff on there.
- 46:22Yeah, I probably would have done maybe that, but I can deal with it.
- 46:25You know, with vinyl wraps and stuff like that, you can change
- 46:26the exterior color pretty easily.
- 46:28But option wise, you know, that's kind of where you get stuck.
- 46:30It's like, oh, I wish I would have this and that, but I'll live without it.
- 46:32Because once it's hacked up like that, and one thing, if you remove body
- 46:36panels off, and you're putting whole new panels and sections on, you had
- 46:39to do a little massaging to make it work, but it wouldn't take all that
- 46:43much to turn it back to original.
- 46:45Are you keeping all those panels like that, so any subsequent owner
- 46:48down the line, say, look, here's all the stuff that came off the car,
- 46:51you can turn it back if you want.
- 46:53Some of those manufacturers, those kits, kind of push that, say, look,
- 46:56oh, it's bolt on, bolt off, yeah, maybe you gotta do a little this and that,
- 46:59I mean, how true it is, I don't know.
- 47:00What are you going to do with this?
- 47:01Oh, here's the car.
- 47:02I mean, you got to have someone that's like, that's, Oh, I love it.
- 47:04That's my style.
- 47:05I don't know.
- 47:05Cause it changes the car.
- 47:06Especially if you start messing with stance, you're making a
- 47:08wider, you're making a lower, you're doing all these things.
- 47:11You got these guys tacking on, having 1500 horsepower, this kind of stuff too.
- 47:15You know what it is, William?
- 47:16We're looking at the wrong car shows.
- 47:18We need to be looking at Radwood and not Car Week.
- 47:21Yeah.
- 47:22You would think to your point on that green 360, at least you think
- 47:25the guy would take it to some car shows or, or he's not that
- 47:27because you know, I would say it's.
- 47:29A famous car, but it's decently well known.
- 47:31I don't know what the viewership is for this show, but people go Oh, that's that
- 47:34car from god and I'd love to see that thing in person because god I only can
- 47:38imagine how bad it is In person, yeah pictures of it seeing that thing in
- 47:41person be like, oh my god, it's worse than I thought, you know It's funny.
- 47:45We've always tried to track the newer What I call restoration shows.
- 47:49And to your point about viewership, Car Masters seem to have outlasted a
- 47:53bunch of other ones, whether it was Rust Valley Restorers or Goblin Works Garage,
- 47:56or even last year they did that one down in El Paso that has disappeared.
- 48:01Yeah.
- 48:01Yeah.
- 48:01Interesting.
- 48:02You know, they're talking about saying going into nostalgia
- 48:04and going that kind of stuff.
- 48:05My personal interpretation at the end of this season.
- 48:09They're going into replica movie cars.
- 48:12Totally different genre in regards to marketing.
- 48:14And there's a decent sized market for that, but you got to do it right.
- 48:18You can't just hack it together like some of the stuff they've done.
- 48:20I mean, you have to have that thing dead nut spot on for authenticity.
- 48:24That's where this season ends.
- 48:26I'm a fan of the show.
- 48:27My wife and I have been watching since the very first season.
- 48:29Cause we thought the concept was really cool and they leave us with
- 48:33them pushing in a 66 Imperial, the black beauty from green Hornet, and
- 48:37they're on this whole nostalgia kick.
- 48:39And this three Oh eight was allegedly the beginning, even though.
- 48:42I think the DeLorean was the beginning of this nostalgia thing
- 48:45and we're going to build other stuff.
- 48:47The Nautilus from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
- 48:49We're going to build, you know, maybe Kit, you know, who knows?
- 48:51And that's cool.
- 48:52And that falls into that Hot Wheels sort of thing that Mark is very good at
- 48:56and the team can get all excited about.
- 48:58The Ferrari saga is over.
- 49:00I hope so.
- 49:01I think they put that to bed.
- 49:03They did that Pechanga car for the casino.
- 49:05That was cool.
- 49:06I like what they did with that.
- 49:07I mean, that theme car, whatnot, what they did, and they did the
- 49:09slot machine wheels, that steering wheel, everything was really good.
- 49:12That thing turned out really nice for what its purpose was.
- 49:16And intent was that thing was fantastic.
- 49:18That looked great.
- 49:19And it's our minds.
- 49:19That's I think their niche is doing stuff like that.
- 49:23You're getting into almost kind of an orange County chopper situation.
- 49:26Well, you're doing it with cars and in previous season, it seemed to my
- 49:30person is that's where they were good at and they moved cars and they made
- 49:33good money on just steer clear of our stuff because that's not their forte.
- 49:37You know, I know as creative as Mark likes to say he is and all of this and that
- 49:41he's not, I think it takes some stuff and making these replica movie cars and what
- 49:45he's done in the past and executing them.
- 49:47He's got a great team behind it.
- 49:49Mark can stick with this paint job to make these things look spectacular
- 49:51because he's a great painter.
- 49:52Give him that.
- 49:53But as for coming out and really designing a whole car to tweak it
- 49:58or whatever you want to call it for him I would say to your point.
- 50:01I think that would make the show that much better if okay mark handles stuff You
- 50:04see the business side he goes out finds the cars do whatever You know get rid of
- 50:07sean and shows him doing the painting and everything on it prepping all that kind of
- 50:11stuff Tony's on their side going through, Hey, how we did this stuff like that.
- 50:14Here's how you build a flux capacitor.
- 50:18Showing how they did it, especially go with these movie cars.
- 50:20Cause those things always have these cool little things.
- 50:23And if they're fully functional and work, people want to know
- 50:26how you did it and incorporating the car and how'd you tie it in.
- 50:29Cause you know, some people are watching that going and
- 50:30saying, well, hey, I'm bored.
- 50:31I'm going to see if I can hook something like that up my car.
- 50:34You know, you'll learn from it.
- 50:35And I like watching stuff like that.
- 50:36I like watching the shows and YouTube and stuff like that shows with the build
- 50:40process, not so much rebuilding wrecked cars, which seemed to be a big thing.
- 50:44You know, I like the stuff where the guy's taking the car, doing
- 50:46the modification, making it better and how they went about doing it.
- 50:49That's just really impressive to me because you know, having that ability
- 50:52to do it and complete it is impressive.
- 50:55And I think that's the way they should go.
- 50:57In my opinion.
- 50:58And I think they would do a lot better viewer wise.
- 51:00You're going to turn a lot of people off coming in, taking a Ferrari and
- 51:03hacking it up and just making it gaudy.
- 51:05I'm going to watch this because if that's what they think this is, forget it.
- 51:08I'm not going to watch.
- 51:08It'd be really interesting to see numbers wise from the end of season
- 51:12five, going into six, what happened in regards to, was there a big drop?
- 51:16What were the demographics of the people that you lost?
- 51:18I thought there were only six episodes.
- 51:20So I got done with episode six.
- 51:21I'm like, All right, but then also the thing pops up in the bottom next episode.
- 51:24Like, oh, wait, there's more.
- 51:26And then luckily my wife's out of town.
- 51:28So I was like, well, I got nothing else to do.
- 51:29So, all right, I'll watch the next episode.
- 51:30And then it got into, I'm like, where it ended up.
- 51:32And again, it seemed like, all right, now it's like, it was a half season.
- 51:35It's like, okay, you guys, where you ended this?
- 51:37It seems like, should be more episodes.
- 51:38And I think the bigger question for us, and I know you're a newer fan, you haven't
- 51:41been following the show from day one.
- 51:43Is there going to be a season seven?
- 51:45We don't know.
- 51:45We probably have to wait.
- 51:47Till sometime in 2025 to see, but it seems like they're going
- 51:50to keep doing what they do.
- 51:52But are you going to keep watching it?
- 51:53Are you that kind of intrigued to see what their antics and what they're up to next?
- 51:57Next season comes out when it does, I'm going to watch it.
- 52:00Yeah, I want to see where they go because I think these replica car movie cars, I
- 52:03think it'd be a good route to go for them.
- 52:05Those are tough cards that they choose to build right off the bat.
- 52:08That's for sure.
- 52:09But there's good money in those things, real good money.
- 52:11Basically to see where they head, to hope they got all that
- 52:13other stuff out of their system.
- 52:14To your point, what you said before is what tweaks they make to the cast.
- 52:18Finding what you need to build those cars isn't too difficult, because
- 52:21you're going to basically tear those things down to the frame anyways.
- 52:24There's rust on the body like that.
- 52:25I mean, you can start with something that's pretty bad.
- 52:27And I'm glad you brought that up.
- 52:28And that's kind of my final thought on this.
- 52:30And my wife made it really, really clear.
- 52:33When we wrap this whole thing up, kind of thinking about this season, previous
- 52:36seasons, and where they're going next.
- 52:38She goes, did you notice that this was the rust free season?
- 52:41They're going to have to change their tagline, rust to riches, because not a
- 52:44single one of those cars had rust on them.
- 52:46I said the same thing.
- 52:47I go, the title's not working anymore, guys.
- 52:51There was no rust involved whatsoever.
- 52:53They were even saying it.
- 52:54Wow.
- 52:55There's nothing on this body.
- 52:56It's fantastic.
- 52:56There's no rust anywhere.
- 52:58The rocker panels are fantastic.
- 52:59I'm like, Uh, you guys got to just change this to car masters building
- 53:03movie rep because something, but yeah, I had the same thought.
- 53:05Yeah.
- 53:06The titles is not going to work for you guys anymore.
- 53:09All right.
- 53:09We'll bring us home, William.
- 53:10Yeah.
