Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Bayly: Port Waikato MP on his member's bill aiming to crack down on unreported child abuse
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A Bell Members bill toughening up child abuse reporting has
- 0:02Speaker 1: been pulled from the Biscuit Tenet Parliament. It'll make it
- 0:05Speaker 1: compulsory to report no one has suspected child abuse to police.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Andrew Bailey, Port Waikato MP with us this morning.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's his bill. Hey Andrew, how are you rying? Yeah?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Really good? Thank you. I mean we hear cases, baby rue.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We hear of cases where there's it's suspected that people
- 0:20Speaker 1: know what's going on but they don't talk to police.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Is this what it's trying.
- 0:24Speaker 3: To fix exactly? So under this arrangement, there is no
- 0:29Speaker 3: legal requirement for people to report are sold against children.
- 0:34Speaker 3: So in those cases, this will give the police the
- 0:36Speaker 3: opportunity to see that if I can prove that you
- 0:39Speaker 3: were there, you didn't report it. And in that situation
- 0:42Speaker 3: where people don't want to incriminate themselves, they would end
- 0:45Speaker 3: up going to jail for three years at least.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Sounds like it would put an end to it. Have
- 0:49Speaker 1: you had any support or idea of support from.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You, Well, I'm pretty certain there'll be crut rights support
- 0:56Speaker 3: about it. The biggest share is there's a requirement for
- 1:00Speaker 3: people to report suspected assaults so we just need to
- 1:04Speaker 3: make sure we've got tight enough definition around that, and
- 1:07Speaker 3: the Slick Committee will state will space through you. But
- 1:10Speaker 3: Australia adopted similar legislation. And just to put this in context,
- 1:14Speaker 3: Ryan over, since nineteen ninety two, there's two hundred and
- 1:18Speaker 3: sixty children in New Zealand they've lost their lives because
- 1:21Speaker 3: of abuse by their parents or guardians.
- 1:24Speaker 1: How you nearly out to politics, aren't you?
- 1:27Speaker 3: I am?
- 1:28Speaker 2: How's it feel? What did you think of Stuart Nash?
- 1:30Speaker 2: I mean, well, Stuart Nash and Paul here. You know
- 1:33Speaker 2: you're a bit of a colorful character yourself. Andrew, what
- 1:36Speaker 2: do you think when you see scandals like that news?
- 1:40Speaker 1: Well?
- 1:41Speaker 3: I thought Stuart Nash's comments were inappropriate, but it is.
- 1:46Speaker 3: We're now getting into the political season and anything's going
- 1:51Speaker 3: to get reported and used against people. But I'd just
- 1:57Speaker 3: as we go through we focus probably more on the
- 2:00Speaker 3: important things that Nzone needs to talk about and we
- 2:02Speaker 3: don't simply you're talking about that enough at the moment.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Andrew Bailey put Wacatto MP with us this morning for
- 2:08Speaker 1: more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Listen live to News Talks.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It'd be from five am weekdays or follow the podcast
- 2:15Speaker 1: on iHeartRadio,
