Transcript
- 0:18Hello to all the comic fans, Marvel geeks, and all the nerds
- 0:20in between. Welcome to another episode of
- 0:22the Vigilante Vibes podcast where we talk all things Marvel
- 0:25along with other fandoms, but without the toxicity that's
- 0:28taken up way too much space in each every fandom.
- 0:30I'm your host, Megan Nicole, and today is one of those days that
- 0:33we will discuss the other fandoms meaning DC and helping
- 0:38me today is probably the biggest Superman fan I know and he will
- 0:41help us get all the way through the movie and tell us his
- 0:45thoughts on the brand new movie Superman.
- 0:47So please welcome George. Hello.
- 0:52Thank you so much for coming on. You're really the perfect person
- 0:55to come talk about this movie. I gosh knows I've been excited
- 0:59about this for years. I kind of, we know each other
- 1:05because of the group that you have online.
- 1:10And I've always been very vocal about, you know, my love for DC,
- 1:16my love for Superman, any kind of my criticisms towards past
- 1:22iterations in the last few years of what was missing.
- 1:26And I was, ever since Gunn was announced to take over DC and
- 1:35announced that his project was going to be Superman, I got very
- 1:39excited. He's someone that he's kind of a
- 1:42career that I've followed since I was younger, as I'm sure kind
- 1:46of you have to, whether it was, you know, watching Slither, his
- 1:52first major movie, or Scooby-doo 1 and 2.
- 1:57I just found out he did those movies yesterday and I was like
- 2:01what? It's just something that you're
- 2:03going to have to go back and watch with, you know, your own
- 2:05little ones again and have kind of that that reawakening that's
- 2:09James Gunn style. All right.
- 2:12So yeah, I was very excited for his Superman.
- 2:17I've been following it very closely for a long time.
- 2:21I know a lot of the complaints early on was nobody was really a
- 2:24big name except for Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor.
- 2:30But that was kind of the staple of any Superman movie, that Lex
- 2:34Luthor was kind of the big name, whether you had Gene Ackman or
- 2:39it's kind of a weird name to say out loud because everything with
- 2:42Kevin Spacey back with Superman Returns and then you a bunch of
- 2:50kind of no names. And as soon as they announced,
- 2:54my wife and I went and watched Rachel Brosnahan on The
- 2:59Marvelous Misses Maisel, which is a fantastic show if nobody's
- 3:03ever watched it and you fell in love with her because the
- 3:06Superman, you should definitely go take a look at that show.
- 3:10And they kind of tried to watch some David Corn Sweat's stuff,
- 3:14whether that was Pearl, which he was the best part of that movie
- 3:19in my opinion. James Gunn saw him.
- 3:22He watched Pearl and said he might make an OK Superman and
- 3:27then called his agent, said I want to meet him.
- 3:30Yeah. And so, yeah, I was there.
- 3:34We got lucky and the local theater that we had had a very
- 3:38small Thursday before it opened opening and we got to go first
- 3:44showing at like 2O clock in the afternoon.
- 3:47Theater was kind of dead because I just think nobody knew about
- 3:50it. It was just like soft kind of
- 3:51launch. It was really intimate and kind
- 3:54of cool. There was a few people, but not
- 3:56many, but it was really cool to see everybody's reactions in
- 4:01that theater because you had people like in their 60s and all
- 4:05the way to like we had a few young kids right behind us to
- 4:09hear their their excitement and that was really cool.
- 4:12So. That is really cool.
- 4:15Here comes my kid who's but yeah.
- 4:21So thank you for having me on. It was really funny because I I
- 4:26do both Buffy and I watch your podcast.
- 4:29And then we we had a few members going, oh, you should have
- 4:34George on. You should have George on.
- 4:36You should have George on. I'm like, I'm not going to press
- 4:38the issue. I'll do it.
- 4:41But yeah, no. So I'm happy to be here.
- 4:46If anyone that's listening, if you want to be on, just ask like
- 4:49I don't care and like I'm happy to have you on.
- 4:51I'm glad those people like brought it up because you don't
- 4:54really go knowing people want to be on because there's been a few
- 4:58times where I was like, you should come on and they're like,
- 5:01absolutely not. And like, OK, well, fine.
- 5:06I think it's always fun to talk to fellow case and get other
- 5:10opinions. It's one of my favorite things
- 5:11to go to the local comic book shops I have here is go and we
- 5:17end up spending two or three hours just talking to the comic
- 5:20store owner and we have different opinions.
- 5:23He's somebody else that's having me on his podcast on Thursday to
- 5:28talk about this. And you know, he's a little bit
- 5:32more of the I like the darker side of of like comic book
- 5:36movies. And I'm like, I'm here for the
- 5:38light. Happy go lucky.
- 5:40Yay. And that's what this movie was,
- 5:43thankfully. And so I was excited where you
- 5:47reached out and like, yeah, let's do it.
- 5:48So and. Now we're doing it.
- 5:52Yeah, well, how many times have you watched Superman?
- 5:55So it's only been once now, but we are planning to because we
- 5:59have a special needs kid as you guys all walking by.
- 6:04We are planning maybe later today to go again after the
- 6:08podcast actually was as soon as we can get him in because he
- 6:11can't handle 3D glasses and all that stuff.
- 6:15So we have to go to kind of a standard sewing and we figured a
- 6:18Monday afternoon maybe nobody would be there so.
- 6:22Yeah, better than Tuesday when all the tickets are like half
- 6:25price, so everyone's going to be.
- 6:27There, Yeah. I get it.
- 6:29I have a special needs kid too and I I know she loved this
- 6:31movie because of crypto, because of no way there's it's just it's
- 6:36not happening. If there was a little bit more
- 6:38crypto, I think even I mean, we got a lot of crypto, but even
- 6:42more, you know, kind of with something like he did with baby
- 6:46crew where it was, it was very prominent.
- 6:50Crypto was kind of more a little subdued here and there for the
- 6:54kids. I mean for the adults too.
- 6:56Well, let's let's not we. Are getting a crypto like mini
- 7:00series right now. I'm excited about that.
- 7:02Yeah, he announced. That's one of the projects that
- 7:05might be coming up, an animated series, which would be great for
- 7:09like little kids introduction and stuff like that.
- 7:13But yeah, I think it's if you could get your kids to go sit
- 7:17down like in a movie, and that's what we're going to try with
- 7:20this one, is just try to see if you'll sit still for a movie.
- 7:26Godspeed. I could not because it's like
- 7:28you'll get there and you think it's going well.
- 7:31Then it happened so fast, you know that it just goes downhill
- 7:35so quick and you're like, we got to get out here now.
- 7:37I don't think I'd be able to with that movie.
- 7:39I don't think I'd be able to leave.
- 7:41I, that was the thing and I will, I'm sure we'll, we'll get
- 7:44into this. But you know, my wife and I, we,
- 7:47we bought all the popcorn we have.
- 7:49You can kind of see the popcorn buckets behind us stacked right
- 7:54now. And we sat down for the movie.
- 7:59I ate a little bit of popcorn during the stupid long
- 8:01commercials. And then I just stopped.
- 8:04Like the movie ended and I realized I still had a half a
- 8:08soda. I still had like most of my
- 8:10popcorn because I just was so focused on everything.
- 8:16And she's like, that's the first time you've never finished your
- 8:18popcorn. I'm like, I was too into the
- 8:19movie. But yeah, like you're saying,
- 8:23you know, it takes one thing and they, you know, especially with
- 8:27special needs kids, loud sounds or whatever.
- 8:30But it's something we want to try because we can't always get
- 8:34a babysitter. And we definitely, my wife and I
- 8:37left the movie and we're like, we want five more hours of this
- 8:41movie. We want to spend, we want to
- 8:44spend time with like Clark and Lois in their apartment.
- 8:47That's one thing that she's all crazy about is like pausing
- 8:50movies or TV shows, like what do they have in their apartment?
- 8:53What what is this? What can I get and stuff like
- 8:56that. But the way he did this movie is
- 9:00I wanted to spend time with more of these characters.
- 9:05When the movie ended, I felt like even though it had been a
- 9:08good length movie and it is, I wanted more.
- 9:13So we were already talking about how can we go back to see it
- 9:15again and again. And it's very rare for us being,
- 9:19you know, parents, stuff like that, going to see the same
- 9:22movie multiple times. The last one I think that we did
- 9:26that for was The Marvels because we love the Marvels.
- 9:29Obviously anybody in the group knows that, but this is
- 9:33definitely one that we want to see multiple times because we
- 9:37the wait for it to be out where we can watch it over and over
- 9:40again and it's going to seem really long.
- 9:43It's going to take so long, and I know it, and it's going to
- 9:46take long because I want the blooper reel, I want the deleted
- 9:49scenes, I want whatever James Gunn stuffs into that disk, and
- 9:54it's going to be something amazing because it's James Gunn.
- 9:56Yeah, of course. I mean, all the Guardians of the
- 9:58Galaxy stuff is, is great. And I would be really interested
- 10:02to see because, and that's I'm sure we'll get into when we kind
- 10:05of breakdown certain aspects of the movie, especially with act
- 10:09one. And there was some problems I
- 10:13felt with act one, not like horrible problems or anything
- 10:16like that. It was like more pacing issues
- 10:18or editing. It definitely felt like stuff
- 10:22was left on the cutting room floor that I want to see, or
- 10:27like a director's cut where it's even a little bit longer.
- 10:32Yeah, the gun cut I, I don't think there will be a gun cut.
- 10:35There's never been a gun cut, but.
- 10:38He would do it. He would pull that trigger.
- 10:41Because. That that.
- 10:43Imagine the Snyder bots. How mad will they be?
- 10:48He gets a, he gets an extended cut.
- 10:50Yeah, yeah, I think that would be hilarious.
- 10:53And we have to talk. I have to remember that the
- 10:57little jabs that they take at the Snyder fans in that movie
- 11:01was just her and I were laughing like for two minutes straight.
- 11:05And the people behind us were like, we just found that so
- 11:09funny for the people that know monkeys and all that.
- 11:14So. Starting the movie, OK, like as
- 11:21soon as it started, I didn't know that the clip they
- 11:25released, James Gunn released of him falling into Antarctica.
- 11:28I didn't know that was the opening clip.
- 11:31And it's like I look back on my young naive self telling my
- 11:35listeners, I wonder where this is in the clip.
- 11:37I bet you it's towards the end right before the climatic
- 11:41battle. No, it that's how it starts.
- 11:46I I was very shocked that we got a Star Wars esque opening crawl,
- 11:55but it worked. I think it worked for the most
- 12:01part. I mean, I was a little bit
- 12:03shocking to see like these like bullet points of this is what
- 12:07you need to know. But this is what I wanted to say
- 12:10about like the opening in the movie is it's clear we're done,
- 12:14is getting inspiration for the Justice League and all those
- 12:17other things is the DC animated universe, especially the early
- 12:232000s, whether it was Batman the Animated Series, Superman, the
- 12:28Animated Series, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
- 12:31He's inspired by that. And I've recently been showing
- 12:36my wife the Justice League series because she wanted more
- 12:39Hawk girls. So I was trying to give her,
- 12:42it's not the same hot girl, it's a different hot girl, but I'm
- 12:46trying to give her a little bit more hot girl.
- 12:48And the beginning of this movie, I kind of mentioned briefly how
- 12:52I had a little bit of like pacing issues.
- 12:55It felt like for anyone that watched that old Justice League
- 12:59show, I, I hate calling it old now, but I guess we're old.
- 13:05But this, the Justice League shows were always broken down
- 13:11into Part 1, Part 2, maybe even Part 3.
- 13:16The start of this movie felt like the Part 1 episodes.
- 13:19And what I like about what James Gunn did, even though for some
- 13:23people probably felt messy, was the Justice League show never
- 13:29treated its viewers as dumb. It's like you may not know these
- 13:34characters and know every aspect about them.
- 13:38In fact, re watching the Justice League, we don't even realize
- 13:41because they never refer to the Flash as anyone other than
- 13:45saying the Flash. We know that it's Wally W
- 13:49because that's who it was during the time.
- 13:51But we're halfway, more than halfway through the series and
- 13:54they've never called him Wally or Wally West or anything like
- 13:59that. And that's the aspect I think
- 14:01gun is taken, especially in the beginning of this movie, is
- 14:04here's the basics of what you need to know.
- 14:06So you're going to get the bullet points.
- 14:08We're starting in in medius res. We're in the middle of a story.
- 14:15He just Superman just got his first loss ever, according to
- 14:20the crawl. And we're going from there.
- 14:23And then all these characters are already a part of this
- 14:26world, and you got to kind of get caught up and we'll drop a
- 14:29name here or there. You're going to be introduced to
- 14:33heroes that are already established that you may not
- 14:36know. I would hazard to guess, like a
- 14:39lot of casual viewers are not going to know about the Green
- 14:42Lantern core. They're going to know certain
- 14:46Green Lanterns, whether it's because they grew up with Hal
- 14:49Jordan or they grew up with Jon Stewart because of DC Animated
- 14:57or maybe Kyle Rayner, because who that's who the 90s, early
- 15:012000s Green Lantern was. So when they see Guy Gardner,
- 15:06they know the basics of a Green Lantern, but they may not
- 15:09understand the core and that's OK, That'll be explained later.
- 15:14Or here's Hawk Girl, but we don't really know her origins in
- 15:18this movie. So that was kind of what my
- 15:23friends were were others were saying was like I felt very
- 15:27rushed in the beginning. Something was left on the
- 15:29cutting room floor. And I get it.
- 15:32But I kind of like that go pace. I do too.
- 15:36I like that that's how he started.
- 15:38I like that we didn't get an origin story.
- 15:41I like that he put us straight in the middle of an already
- 15:44established world with established characters that if
- 15:47you want to learn more about them then you have to be at the
- 15:50movie theater to go get to know them, which I love that aspect.
- 15:54I like that it doesn't start slow because like so many do
- 15:59except Snyder, he started to get a lot.
- 16:06I, I don't want to crash on Snyder too much.
- 16:08I mean I I. Don't either.
- 16:10I'm a Snyder fan but it's like oh the toxic fans of Snyder just
- 16:15make me want to hate him. I won't.
- 16:18I like him but it's like dude you got the worst fan base of
- 16:21all time. He plays to it though.
- 16:23He he really does. He does.
- 16:27I think unfortunately Snyder put a lot of toxicity when it came
- 16:32to DC, not just because of his fan base, but the way he tried
- 16:38to build his world. He is very apparent that he
- 16:43loved the darker stuff, the Frank Miller, which I've never
- 16:49been a fan of. I understand why it's popular.
- 16:52I own it, like it. It should be on comic book fan
- 16:56shelves like The Dark Knight Returns.
- 16:59But to me, that's not DC. That's not what Batman was, you
- 17:05know, really supposed to be. When I think Batman, I think
- 17:07Detective I when I think Superman, I think hope.
- 17:12When I think Wonder Woman, I think compassion.
- 17:14And everyone in Snyder's movies, they, they blended together in
- 17:19this just dark nihilistic. And I, I think that's a key term
- 17:25is nihilism. And I don't want that nihilism.
- 17:29And that's why I loved within the first few minutes you have
- 17:33that even though Superman's bleeding and on the ground and
- 17:41bloody and bruised, within a moment you have this
- 17:45ridiculously adorable creature just come running up and just
- 17:51destroying him. And some of the funniest laughs
- 17:54I had in this movie was especially dog owners or anybody
- 17:58that's been around a dog or let's be honest, cat owners know
- 18:02what it's like to have an animal that does not listen to you and
- 18:07it's just maybe too excited to see you.
- 18:09But when he fell and it's like, OK, we're playing for keeps now.
- 18:14And then James Gunn interrupts it with that, that hopefulness
- 18:17of this, this dog dragging him across the Arctic to home again.
- 18:21And it's like you said, I thought that was going to be
- 18:23something at the end of the second act, leaning into the
- 18:28third act. And here it is in the beginning
- 18:30of the movie and it was a good way to start it because we kind
- 18:36of establishes this hope, if you will.
- 18:40I I'm going to use that word way too much because.
- 18:42That's what Superman is though is hope He should be explained
- 18:46that way. And we get to meet, you know,
- 18:50the Superman robots, one voice by the incomparable Alan Tudyk,
- 18:56who at this point you just, if you're a geek, you just
- 19:00recognize his voice. And we get to meet Gary, who are
- 19:04who later gets to be called Gary.
- 19:08And Gary kind of gives us this origin story, if you will, as
- 19:13they're carrying him in. Like this is what the audience
- 19:16needs to know if you really don't know Superman, but it's
- 19:20just like Spider Man. And it's just like Batman.
- 19:22I think the origins of Superman is so ingrained into us as a
- 19:27culture that we don't need to revisit it.
- 19:30It's kind of like, I think the benefit of whatever comes next,
- 19:35whether we get Wonder Woman because we've heard paradise
- 19:38losses coming, I don't think we need another origin story of
- 19:44Wonder Woman either. See, I'm going to disagree with
- 19:47you about everyone knows about the origin of Superman because
- 19:52James Gunn proved it last week or the week before when he said
- 19:55that the story of Superman is about America.
- 19:59It's he's an illegal alien who comes and is treated horribly.
- 20:03And everyone's like, you made Superman into an illegal
- 20:06immigrant alien. And everyone's like, you know,
- 20:09the people who who use common knowledge, the smart part of
- 20:12their brain was like, what are you mad about here?
- 20:15Because that is Superman. So I think a lot of people.
- 20:19Did kind of prove that they need someone to explain that to them.
- 20:22Like a, Like a. Unfortunately, unfortunately, I
- 20:25I was thinking more along the lines as we know that he comes
- 20:28from a far away planet, Yadda yadda, Kansas born and bred and
- 20:33there were changes that gun made to his origin.
- 20:37And I want to get to that because I had a friend message
- 20:40me day before yesterday who we don't talk very much anymore
- 20:45because he's just busy with his life and I am with his life.
- 20:48He's like, did you see what they did to Joy Allen?
- 20:50He started jumping on this. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, back
- 20:53up. Let's discuss this, my man.
- 20:56But you're right because Superman holds a special place
- 21:01in my heart too, because of his creators were both Jewish and
- 21:08they were Jewish immigrants and they wrote this story and a lot
- 21:12of people have this complaint. Well, if he was created by
- 21:15Jewish people, why is he Jewish? Well, because it wasn't OK for
- 21:19superheroes to be Jewish back then.
- 21:23And but that that allegory of, of the immigrant coming into the
- 21:29United States to rebuild who they are, you have to remember
- 21:33when Superman was created was the 1930s, and he really didn't
- 21:40gain in popularity that much until around World War 2, as it
- 21:44was. It's always been kids.
- 21:52Comic books have always been political.
- 21:55I hate to break this to you, but they've always been political.
- 21:59Whether it's Superman, whether it's Green Lantern, whether it's
- 22:06Spider Man or definitely the X-Men, they've always been
- 22:10political. I know right, and the X-Men, if
- 22:14we had the backlash for Superman of how yes, when it comes to
- 22:21X-Men, just wait till we have to deal with like, oh, X-Men is so
- 22:26woke, like X-Men have always been woke, my man.
- 22:30That's their that's their thing. Yeah.
- 22:32They've never claimed to be anything different.
- 22:34Even their villain. Even the biggest guy who's all
- 22:36about killing them all, who is Magneto?
- 22:39He's cool killing the whole human race.
- 22:42He's woke too. But that is their thing.
- 22:45So I get what you're saying and I, I think in that aspect,
- 22:49you're right is we have these people that want to put their
- 22:52head in their sand and like, this isn't what the story is
- 22:54about. Don't make this political, but
- 22:57it's all it is political. I mean, that's what stories are.
- 23:01Even back to ancient Greece, like those, those gods, which I,
- 23:06I'm bringing this up because comic books and Superman and
- 23:10comic book heroes, they are our modern gods.
- 23:17There are God's stories and we, we some of us worship them.
- 23:21I mean, in quote UN quote ways. I mean, if you look behind me,
- 23:26you see Green Lantern stuff. You can't quite see all my
- 23:28Superman stuff off the side. You see our like signed Captain
- 23:33Marvel, Funko and stuff like that.
- 23:36We worship these characters because they show us how to be
- 23:39better in a world that is not better.
- 23:42And that's what this movie was about.
- 23:47And if you take offense to that, you've grown up wrong, I'm sorry
- 23:51to say. You're not a comic book fan.
- 23:54You're not. There's no.
- 23:55Way. There's no way kindness is the
- 23:57new punk rock, and you're not I. Love that line so much, and I'm
- 24:01not going to get tired of that line.
- 24:04But yeah, So, you know, the movie starts and Gary kind of
- 24:08gives us the rundown of who he is, his weaknesses, his
- 24:12strength, whether we need to get him in the yellow sun to heal
- 24:15him and stuff like that. Let's play the recording from
- 24:19your parents. Wait, I know it was announced,
- 24:25but I'm still kind of shocked to see Bradley Cooper as Jor El.
- 24:29It was announced and I was kind of I've I've lately in the past
- 24:36two weeks, three weeks leading up to this, I stopped watching
- 24:40clips. I didn't want to see anymore.
- 24:44I kind of avoided news, but I did see that he was announced to
- 24:48be not only like a voice of one of the robots, but another role
- 24:53and then the OK, so the. So the actual role like came out
- 24:57with the movie. Yeah, I think so.
- 24:59I think I saw somewhere spoiled that he was going to be Jorel,
- 25:03but to me that's not a big deal because I knew this wasn't going
- 25:06to be an origin movie. So when we're going to have like
- 25:08a big Russell Crowe, like, God, how long was that scene in Man
- 25:13of Steel? Like 20 minutes and then our our
- 25:18Marlon Brando, it was it was clip.
- 25:21That's all it was, was a clip with him with Jor El and Laura
- 25:28giving him his message. It was also really cool.
- 25:32Not that it's not our first time hearing Krypt, the Krypton
- 25:37language, but for it to be spoken so fluidly was very cool
- 25:46to hear. And I'm sure we're going to hear
- 25:50more of it once we get. I don't want to get too into
- 25:54spoilers, but the next major move.
- 25:57OK, all of it. Let it all out.
- 26:00Once we get more Supergirl, we're going to get more of
- 26:03Krypton and Candor, I'm sure of it.
- 26:07But yeah, it's like you said, here we have, we're going to
- 26:14start the movie. We don't need to see him coming
- 26:16to Earth. That can be told to us in 5
- 26:20minutes. And it really was, it wasn't a
- 26:22long scene. And that's the way our movie
- 26:27begins. And it felt like I said to bring
- 26:29it back to what I said before, like one of those Justice League
- 26:32episodes, things have been happening.
- 26:36Like you turn on an episode of Justice League and it's just
- 26:39like they're in the middle of a fight and you're just like,
- 26:42what's going on? Did I miss the first, you know,
- 26:44whatever minutes? And I like that it treats the
- 26:48viewers. It treats the viewers as being
- 26:52smart. And I like that.
- 26:55I also think with them giving the origin story, it wasn't
- 27:00just, you know, for the audience, it did have to do with
- 27:03what was going on, what he was battling internally.
- 27:05When it came out that oh, your parents are actually trash, It's
- 27:10like it did come out like it. We did get more of that and it
- 27:13did intertwine with his origin. So it wasn't like here audience,
- 27:17just so you're aware, but it played into it.
- 27:20So I think I think that was handled very beautifully.
- 27:23And that was one thing, I guess since you brought it up, you
- 27:25know, we the twist that gun throws is Jor El and his mother,
- 27:33Clark's mother is birth mother. I should say we're not probably
- 27:39good people. And I was OK with it.
- 27:45And I'm a Superman purist. Like I love, I love all the
- 27:50goofy stuff from Golden Age and, and Silver Age.
- 27:54You know, I laughed hard when they brought up the hypno
- 27:56glasses because I remember that and reading that and when I was
- 28:01really young. But I've it's always sat wrong
- 28:06for me that whether it's a Christopher Reeve movie or Man
- 28:10of Steel, that the thing that pushes Clark to be Superman is
- 28:15hearing a recording of his birth father.
- 28:20I like the twists and I like the twist of it doesn't mean that
- 28:26they were bad. But when you kind of know
- 28:29Superman more, everybody else on Krypton were basically horrible
- 28:33people. They were.
- 28:35So they were so far up their own butts that even the Green
- 28:39Lantern Corps didn't want to like touch Krypton.
- 28:44Like they they just like, no, all right, you guys are we're
- 28:47good. And it makes sense then that his
- 28:54parents would be the same way. Now, you could go, well, it's a
- 28:59cultural thing, OK, even if it's cultural thing.
- 29:03And because like this extended message that Luther uncovers and
- 29:07uses a smear campaign against Superman, like his mother says,
- 29:11oh, start a harem and have have have babies, have as many babies
- 29:18as you can. And I'm just like, but isn't
- 29:20that a standard like Jewish mother?
- 29:24Just give me grandbabies. Give me grandbabies all the
- 29:28granberries. So that was kind of a joke I
- 29:31made with my friend that contact me.
- 29:33I'm like, well, maybe it's a cultural thing.
- 29:35It's like she doesn't care. Get with as many women as you
- 29:38want. Just give me grandbabies.
- 29:39That's what I want. OK.
- 29:42And then Joral saying that, you know, rule over these people,
- 29:47you're going to be better than them.
- 29:48That's. Such a dad thing to do.
- 29:52Like you're better than all of them.
- 29:54Yeah, see, and that's the thing I'm saying.
- 29:55That's why I was like trying to calm my friend down.
- 29:57And I was like, dude, it could be that, you know, it's a
- 30:03different language. It's a different, you know, for
- 30:06all we know, he could have said something along the lines, you
- 30:08know, and if they screw up, you can lead them.
- 30:12You can be better or they're just horrible people and they're
- 30:17horrible people and they are simply, you know, and this is
- 30:24common in our culture right now. And it kind of started a little
- 30:29bit with Snyder. It started before I'm going to
- 30:36like throw it to Eric Kripke and and the boys comic books even
- 30:40before we gave a show because I know you're big on the boys.
- 30:43It's like one of your one of your fits.
- 30:44And I'm not I'm not ripping on it.
- 30:46Oh. No don't worry, I have my own
- 30:48opinions on that. Damn.
- 30:50Show, but like especially the comics because I read the boys
- 30:52comics. I'm kind of waiting for the show
- 30:55to be done to Benjet I guess. Good luck with.
- 30:59The last. Season That's I know so, but you
- 31:02know this whole idea of the ultimate human being and
- 31:07ultimate douchebag and or you go to invisible right and you have
- 31:17the viltromites as these conquering race and Mark is the
- 31:22one like good one out there. And a lot of people were saying,
- 31:28well, this is just copying invisible.
- 31:32It's copying Dragon Ball Z. I'm like, but Superman came
- 31:37first. This is just gun tweaking little
- 31:40things to show this fits in our new world.
- 31:44But look, it's not. It's the argument of nature
- 31:48versus nurture. That's what it is.
- 31:51And Superman's nature is or the nature of Krypton is to maybe
- 31:58think themselves better than everybody.
- 32:01But nurture. We look at the Kents and we look
- 32:05at how they raised him. One of my favorite moments was,
- 32:08I think this was more towards the end of the movie after they
- 32:13they free Superman from his prison and Lois takes him back
- 32:19home. And we get a look inside of the
- 32:22Kent homestead. And it just felt so real, like I
- 32:28grew up with Smallville, You grew up with Smallville.
- 32:31We spent seasons in the Kent home and it always felt a little
- 32:35bit too nice. And then?
- 32:37It very staged, like kind of like when you're selling a house
- 32:42and they stage the house. It's too nice.
- 32:44It's not lived in. Yeah, and we got to the Kent
- 32:47homestead and it felt real. Like there's a scene where it's
- 32:52a it's a little thing, but like they're walking back into the
- 32:56house because Martha says you have to see this on TV.
- 33:00And we see that they have this shitty little like 25 inch TV.
- 33:09And I'm just like, OK, that feels like a kid that grew up on
- 33:13a farm and a family that was struggling for money.
- 33:16That home felt lived in. And that was one thing I want to
- 33:19point out to Gunn is all the apartments and all the sets,
- 33:24except for maybe like the like Luther stuff, all felt very
- 33:31real. Clark's apartment felt real.
- 33:37Mompa had for him felt real. Like you are y'all related?
- 33:42Because like I haven't felt that love since I saw my mom last my
- 33:46gosh. The Kent stuff and it all comes
- 33:49back to the like what we're saying in the beginning of this
- 33:51movie, this nature versus nurture.
- 33:56The Fortress of Solitude, except for when Crypto has his way,
- 34:00feels like a hospital in a way. It's too clean.
- 34:05And that's always been the way with any Fortress of Solitude,
- 34:07except for maybe Man of Steel. But I don't want to call that
- 34:11the Fortress of Solitude because it was a ship that was it's it's
- 34:19very hospital like. And then you get to the Kent
- 34:26farm later on and you're like, this is what shaped who he is.
- 34:31The goofy young guy that says, well, darn.
- 34:37Or what the hey man, we see this in the Kent home and I really
- 34:44loved, like you said, the love that we feel with the Kints in
- 34:48this. I feel like they were parents
- 34:51that made mistakes and I love that.
- 34:55I love that Jonathan in this version is the overly emotional
- 34:59one that I cried in Superman six or seven times and I can't hide
- 35:11when I cry. My wife says you cry with your
- 35:13whole body. Your whole body shakes.
- 35:16Like you try to laugh it off as like you're coughing or
- 35:19something like that. But I cried during the opening,
- 35:23like literally the opening DC logo of Superman breaking his
- 35:27chains, I started crying. So when they established that
- 35:30Jonathan Kent is the emotional one and he's a bigger guy like
- 35:34me, I'm like, I love this. And you're right.
- 35:38I felt the love even in the small scenes that we got because
- 35:42it wasn't a lot with the kids, but it was enough.
- 35:45Whether it was them leaving their their voicemail.
- 35:50I loved watching Ma Kent like have the phone on the coffee
- 35:54table and bending over and speaking a little bit too loud
- 35:58about things that Clark probably has no idea of.
- 36:02She's like, oh, so and so said this, this and this and it just
- 36:06felt so real. And that's what gun does well is
- 36:10even though we're dealing with a movie of God like characters
- 36:14that they feel so real. And I think that in some ways
- 36:20that's a problem sometimes Marvel has is we have these
- 36:26characters that you just can't relate to.
- 36:32I don't know if that's the right word, but like, they're just so
- 36:36far beyond above us, you know? Like, I can't relate to anyone
- 36:43on the New Avengers or the Thunderbolts because I don't
- 36:47know what it's like to be that. But a lot of us know what it's
- 36:52like to struggle in a family environment, struggle to do
- 36:58better. I have a wife.
- 37:01Yeah, I have a wife. That she.
- 37:02She looked at the Kent's home. Hey.
- 37:08Hello. That she's like.
- 37:13I lived in a home like that growing up.
- 37:18And it's like you said, I haven't felt that love since the
- 37:21last time I talked to my mom, you know, and the fact that he
- 37:26can write this so well that we can, what is a good sign?
- 37:33I think with DC and I think like creature Commandos, he did a
- 37:38good job for us to care about these monsters.
- 37:41Like we felt for the bride, we felt for GI Robot, we felt for
- 37:47Weasel, you know, Peacemaker. Oh my God, like thinking that
- 37:56you would like understand this like kind of borderline really
- 38:00racist guy and you're like, I feel bad for you.
- 38:07I love that she agrees with everything.
- 38:08She's just like coughing. I love it.
- 38:10Wish I had more students like that.
- 38:12It was unhinged. But I agree, never in my life
- 38:17did I think that James Gunn can make me care for Doctor
- 38:19Phosphorus. Yeah, right.
- 38:22Yeah. Bro I I thought I was in charge
- 38:26of my emotions, no James Gunness.
- 38:28Yeah, yeah. And I I think he does such a
- 38:31good job with everyone, whether it's the new.
- 38:36I'm going to use the term that my students use.
- 38:39And if they ever find this, they're going to cringe.
- 38:41And I love it. The new Riz master of Jimmy
- 38:44Olsen. I just did my life grown in the
- 38:48kitchen. It's worth it.
- 38:50I didn't think I'd be simping for Jimmy Olsen, but halfway
- 38:53through I was like, does Jimmy have that sauce?
- 38:56Yeah. What are we doing here?
- 38:58But it's so funny because if you go back into old Jimmy Olsen
- 39:02comics, he is popular. He's he's Archie, you know, he
- 39:07doesn't realize that he's popular with the ladies.
- 39:10But like in the newest Superman comics, or last time I read
- 39:14anyways, he's still with Silver Banshee, who used to be a
- 39:17villain who flips to be a good guy because she's in love with
- 39:21Jimmy Olsen. And it's just like, oh, OK.
- 39:26And or, you know, I even cared about like, the lesser Daily
- 39:33Planet staff because they all felt real, like Kat Grant felt
- 39:39real. I wanted more of Perry White, to
- 39:42be honest. I think this is one of my
- 39:44favorite Perry White's I've ever seen because he just felt so
- 39:48good. And I got the impression that he
- 39:50actually knows Clark is Superman, which I love.
- 39:54Oh, yeah, I think that too. By the end of it, I was like, he
- 39:57knows. There's no way he doesn't know.
- 39:59He has to. Yeah.
- 40:00And that's what my wife was saying.
- 40:01She's like, so in this universe, did Lois figure out that Clark
- 40:05was Superman? Or did Clark tell Lois?
- 40:08I'm like, I hope it is. She's smart enough and she
- 40:12figured it out. 100%. Our hard headed set in her way,
- 40:16says she. The hypnoglasses didn't work on
- 40:19her. I don't know if you've heard
- 40:20that, she said. Or she was so hard headed that
- 40:23the hypno glasses didn't work on her, which I could see too.
- 40:27Or like she's, I hope it's something deeper.
- 40:31Like she never actually looked at his face, so the glasses
- 40:34didn't matter. She just knew like the
- 40:35mannerisms. She figured it out on her own.
- 40:38I hope it's something weird like that.
- 40:39That's like only you, Lois, you little punk rocker would figure
- 40:43that out. I and it's it's it's one of
- 40:46those things of us that know the Superman lore, we want even more
- 40:50of these characters because they felt so real.
- 40:53Like in guns universe, is there a Lucy Lane?
- 40:59Like does she have her sister like she does in the comics or
- 41:04like on Supergirl TV show and stuff like that?
- 41:07We learned that Lois has a sister, which she always has.
- 41:11Was the sister punk rock too, or was she daddy's little good
- 41:15girl? Is Sam Lane a member of this
- 41:19universe? I wanted to know all these
- 41:22little things about all these characters.
- 41:30He made me care about the robots I know.
- 41:33My broke my heart broke for four.
- 41:36I know. Really.
- 41:39He he finds him later on destroyed and he's like trying
- 41:41to stab his head to put a screw back together.
- 41:44And just like I OK, I care about the robots, I care about the
- 41:49dog. Well, of course we're going to
- 41:50care about the dog, but you know, it's.
- 41:54Usually Guy Gardner, someone that people can be like, I love
- 41:59that guy. You're like, I know.
- 42:00Whoa. And I've never, I don't think
- 42:03anybody I've never met a true because I'm a huge Green Lantern
- 42:07fan also that is truly a guy fan.
- 42:12Guy has always been there. Tolerated.
- 42:16He took OK. My wife said she's a guy fan.
- 42:19I think she's the Nathan Fillion fan, but I it's not until Geoff
- 42:26Johns did Green Lantern Rebirth that they really gave Guy.
- 42:31Like this background story of befriending Yellow Lanterns and
- 42:37their friendship is like, we're going to beat each other up.
- 42:40But I even cared about Guy in this.
- 42:42Did I want Guy to get socked in the face?
- 42:45Absolutely. He has a gold tooth.
- 42:47I want to know if Batman is the one that gave him that gold
- 42:50tooth because he knocked it out. I need it.
- 42:53I need that scene somewhere. If there was one person I wanted
- 42:58more of actually was Hawk Girl, because out of the members of
- 43:04the Justice Gang, I hate saying that name, by the way, I just
- 43:10want to call them Justice League International.
- 43:13But she just didn't have a she didn't talk a lot.
- 43:19She was there and she did stuff, but I wanted more of her sass
- 43:24because Isabel Merced played it so well.
- 43:30And but it goes the way Gunn writes.
- 43:37Gunn knows how to make us care about characters we never
- 43:41thought we could and care even more for characters that we care
- 43:49about. It's so cool to see little kids
- 43:52online excited for Mr. Terrific, who is such a great character
- 43:58and I'm so excited to have. He would.
- 44:01To me, he's one of those guys that stole almost every scene he
- 44:03was in. He had the humor, but he it was
- 44:07a humor in the way like, I know I'm smarter than you, but I'm
- 44:10not a douchebag about it. I'm used to being a douchebag
- 44:14about it but I'm trying to be better.
- 44:18One of the best scenes in the movie I think is him taking Lois
- 44:21to go find the portal to save Superman and he just comes out.
- 44:26And Rex House is one of my favorite scenes in the movie
- 44:30because it's the stereotypical James Gunn pseudo hallway fight
- 44:35if you want to call it that and it's just done so well.
- 44:45I just, it's one of those things where the movie ends and I just
- 44:50want more of every character. Which is great, because it's
- 44:54being reported that Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific are getting
- 44:58their own spin off. Even possibly from the open.
- 45:02Yeah, which makes me think like, what are they cooking for hot
- 45:04girl because. Yeah.
- 45:06I wanted to see more of her. She reminds me of the hot girl
- 45:10that was in Axelrod's Jadzia Axelrod's run, and I thought it
- 45:16was perfect. And we know that she's she's
- 45:20Kendra in this he he let us know that like in the Justice League
- 45:25series, it's it's not Kendra. It is the Shiara where she is
- 45:32the alien, where Kendra has a really kind of tragic back
- 45:35story. You know, this is a young woman
- 45:37that took her own life that gets possessed by this alien entity
- 45:45that is eternal. And I want to know the troubles
- 45:52she went through. And I think we will eventually.
- 45:57But that was for the comic fans. The casual viewers aren't going
- 46:02to know that she has a tragic back story.
- 46:05They're just going to know that she's kind of this badass.
- 46:09You know, I'm going to chew gum and call you out on your shit
- 46:12and then hit you with a Mace character and her battle screech
- 46:19cry, if you will. I've heard some people online,
- 46:21like, complain about it. I thought it was so cool.
- 46:26It was something unique to the character 'cause even my wife
- 46:29was like, does she do that in the comics?
- 46:31I'm like, not that I remember. And she's like, yeah, that
- 46:36that's, that's Black Canary. She's this creature.
- 46:39I'm like, yeah, but it goes to the fact that as well as John is
- 46:45writing this in a way that if you are interested, go pick up
- 46:49the comic books. And we need that in 2025.
- 46:54We need people reading. And I would hazard a guess at
- 46:59sales. It'd be interesting to to look
- 47:03in a few months how DC comic sales have hopefully skyrocketed
- 47:09for new readers like, you know, your little ones wanting to pick
- 47:13up, you know, a young kids book about Hawk Girl or Superman or
- 47:19Supergirl or something. Like that some of the some of
- 47:22those characters for Free Comic Book Day that we got for kids.
- 47:26Yeah. And I, I think that's great.
- 47:28And, but I, I think we're kind of going off on this thing.
- 47:33We want to talk about the movie. So, and we only left off the
- 47:38beginning. So we're introduced, you know,
- 47:44we, we, he gets his butt kicked and we're introduced to this
- 47:49idea that Luther is already pulling the strings.
- 47:55This is the first time since I think Michael Rosenbaum's Lex
- 47:59that Lex has been nailed like I'd.
- 48:03Go farther to say that I think he did better than Rosenbaum
- 48:08because it. You too.
- 48:10I I just. Right.
- 48:11Yeah, he made. Me feel every emotion at the end
- 48:14of it I was like he had no right.
- 48:16Mm hmm, I did not expect any of this.
- 48:19Nicholas Holt who played Beast in the X-Men.
- 48:22Like what? An underrated actor.
- 48:24Oh, the dude is like, and that's what it was.
- 48:27And I mentioned this beginning. It's it's always been.
- 48:30Lex Luthor is kind of the biggest actor in these movies.
- 48:35You think back to Gene Hackman, who already had a career, and
- 48:39Christopher Reeve was a daytime soap star.
- 48:43Margaret Kidder wasn't that big. She got bigger afterwards, but
- 48:49it was Gene Hackman that was kind of the powerhouse that
- 48:51brought people in Superman Returns.
- 48:55We had Kevin Spacey, who at the time was a very, very, very big
- 49:01actor, and people liked less. We can say about that.
- 49:07The better. Yeah, that's.
- 49:11Well, that one hurts because I really liked a lot of his
- 49:13movies. But yeah, so Nicholas Holt has
- 49:20been this powerhouse for a long time.
- 49:24And I was very skeptical because our last flex was not good in
- 49:33the Snyder verse. Oof.
- 49:38I, I, there's no redeeming factor to that Lex at all.
- 49:41I'm sorry. And I know that you like your
- 49:45you. You're a Snyder fan.
- 49:47I. I like Snyder.
- 49:48I I'm a Snyder fan, but that was like, you know, Jesse tried his
- 49:53best, I think, but it seems like he's the only one that tried his
- 49:57best. They didn't give him much of
- 50:00anything there. And again, we grew up on
- 50:03Smallville and Michael Rosenbaum we saw evolve into this evil ass
- 50:10character. But it was in a way that we
- 50:12spent too much time with him where he was a good character
- 50:16where we couldn't really buy necessarily the evilness.
- 50:19We just wanted the Lex back that we knew the one from the start
- 50:23of the series. I know that on Superman and
- 50:27Lois, they brought in a Lex. I kind of gave up on that show
- 50:30as a Superman fan because it was too much CW drama for me and I
- 50:35just, I couldn't with the kids. I just couldn't.
- 50:38I cared about Superman and Lois and that's what the show was
- 50:41called and it wasn't about them. And it bothered me.
- 50:44Maybe one day I'll go back. Yeah, I'm a huge Flash fan, and
- 50:48I had to give up on the Flash because, like, it's very CW
- 50:52Very, very. CWI gave up on the last two
- 50:55seasons too, so you're not alone.
- 50:57Yeah, it's just I got enough to know that Grant Gustin is my
- 51:01flash forever. Yeah, for sure.
- 51:04Plus he's a good dude, or so it seems.
- 51:07I hate 2025 saying he's a good dude, and then two months later
- 51:11we find out somebody may not be a good dude.
- 51:13So, but he seems like a good dude.
- 51:16And I really like Grant, but this Lex, we're introduced to
- 51:21him and he, the way Gunn writes him, he's the smartest dude in
- 51:26the room. We see it right away and we see
- 51:30that it is such a parallel to what we see in our real world.
- 51:35Everybody loves this billionaire.
- 51:41They worship the ground he walks on.
- 51:43We're introduced to Eve Tessmacher in this version or
- 51:46this version of her that is clearly more obsessed with him
- 51:50than he is with her. And power to her.
- 51:56I want to get back to her a little bit later because what
- 51:58they the twist they did to her, I'm making her smarter than she
- 52:02appeared was just loved it. Lex is so petty, but Gun makes
- 52:15us understand where his pettiness comes from.
- 52:19This Lex wants to be the center of attention.
- 52:24He wants to be the Superman. And so we understand his, we
- 52:34understand his anger, but we should not condone it in any
- 52:39way, shape or form. We see that he's pulling the
- 52:42strings with having this hammer of Bravia beat up.
- 52:48And the way that he does it too, with all these cameras and he's
- 52:51calling out like chess moves was really clever.
- 52:55And I really like that because in the grand scheme of things,
- 53:01the major movie versions of Lex that we have has been obsessed
- 53:06with land. Gene Hackman wanted to destroy
- 53:10California to be a landowner. Kevin Spacey's Lex Luther and
- 53:16Superman Returns wanted to build new land with this kryptonite so
- 53:23he could control the land. In this movie, they even kind of
- 53:28do a little bit of a nod like, oh, he he cares about land here.
- 53:34No, he doesn't. And he even tells us that now
- 53:37that that would have been icing on the cake.
- 53:39But that's not what I'm here for.
- 53:41I'm here to destroy you. It's all about you.
- 53:45And I really like the Superman's.
- 53:46Like, dude, you're a little bit creepy with this.
- 53:50You're a little bit too obsessed.
- 53:55But we're introduced to Nicholas Holt and Lex and I I have to
- 53:58say, do I love Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor?
- 54:02Yeah. I mean, he's the first major
- 54:06motion picture Lex Luthor. He's charming as all hell.
- 54:10He's funny. Did I like Kevin Spacey?
- 54:15Yeah, I did. There's the scene in that
- 54:19Superman Returns where he yells at Low.
- 54:23He's trying to get Lois to to call him a genius, and she's not
- 54:28doing it. And he screams in her face.
- 54:30And it's like one of my favorite Lex scenes in any movie until
- 54:34this. Because every scene that
- 54:37Nicholas Holt is in, he just oozes this toxic charisma.
- 54:45I want to call it toxic charisma.
- 54:47Toxic or he has he he I don't understand how can you make Lex
- 54:55Luthor have so much swag as such a bad guy and such negative swag
- 55:01too. But at the end of it, I'm like,
- 55:03you know, I kind of just want what's best for him, to be
- 55:05honest with you. I was happy to see him go get
- 55:09get sent to Belle Reeve because I know we'll see him again
- 55:12because Belle Reeve is has been in the Suicide Squad, it's been
- 55:16in Peacemaker, it's been in Creature Commandos as well.
- 55:22They weren't, you know, shipping him off to Arkham or something
- 55:26like that because he's not insane.
- 55:29I mean, he definitely has mental illness.
- 55:32He's a narcissist and a sociopath.
- 55:36But yeah, I mean, he he radiates this toxic charisma that people
- 55:45that mirrors people in our own life in 2025, be them
- 55:50influencers or billionaires that try to control our government.
- 55:56And that's very much what I got from this Lex.
- 55:59And he nails it. The scene where Superman comes
- 56:02into his office looking for crypto and throws his death skin
- 56:09against the window and the way he just sits there, so calm and
- 56:15then taunts him behind the coffee mug is just so well
- 56:22acted. And it's so the, the, the, the
- 56:27connection this cast had. You could feel it, whether it's
- 56:32behind the scenes or on screen. I bought that David and Rachel
- 56:39had charisma for days. I bought that David and Nicholas
- 56:48had kind of a rivalry going on because Nicholas did try out for
- 56:53Superman and lost it to David. And I think that probably
- 56:59fueled, fueled some of those scenes in a good way.
- 57:04In a good way. Not none.
- 57:06I actually want to hurt David Way.
- 57:08Yeah, no, I get it. It it makes sense it they do
- 57:11have this chemistry that is so off the charts that you can see
- 57:14on screen and off screen, but especially Lois and Clark.
- 57:22What I loved about this movie is that they didn't sugarcoat a
- 57:24relationship that was like they're meant to be.
- 57:27They're perfect. They're incredible.
- 57:28What they were was very flawed to people who were complete
- 57:31opposites who didn't even think this would really work.
- 57:34Still try and that's relatable. That's understandable.
- 57:39It's not this fairy tale within a Superman movie.
- 57:42It's this is real stuff and I really like that.
- 57:48You know, you, you mentioned the trailers and like, I wasn't
- 57:52expecting the movie to start this way, that this was like
- 57:55something that would come later. The same can be said for one of
- 57:58the best moments. Some of the best moments of this
- 58:01movie is just talking, which in a superhero movie is kind of not
- 58:07heard of. You know, you think of over on
- 58:11the Marvel side, some of the best moments are action-packed,
- 58:15whether it's we finally get Avengers Assemble, like like we
- 58:20hear those words or so on and so forth.
- 58:24It's action. Some of the best moments in this
- 58:26movie are talking are the most heartfelt, and this goes those
- 58:33things that we saw in the trailer that happened early on
- 58:37in the movie. That interview that Clark gives
- 58:41to Lois, like here interview me was so raw and so beautiful in a
- 58:50realistic relationship way that you're going to push each
- 58:57other's gears. And we see Lois for who she is.
- 59:02She is the intrepid reporter. She is tenacious.
- 59:06She is an unmovable object in her what she believes in.
- 59:14And the fact that she calls him out like saying and she's like
- 59:17trying. There's this beautiful thing
- 59:19where she's saying these things, but on her face too, she's like,
- 59:25it's like she's almost pleading, like, you know, I still care
- 59:27about you, right? And I'm asking these questions.
- 59:31She does so much with her face. That's that's wonderful.
- 59:34But that whole scene is one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
- 59:38And then she goes to clean and we have this moment before
- 59:46Superman or Clark storms out. Rightly so.
- 59:49I get that he's upset. I, I'm, you know, I walk away
- 59:52from situations. I, I don't, I don't like to
- 59:55fight. And Clark is the same way in
- 59:57this movie. And I I like that.
- 1:00:00And she says something along the lines of maybe this isn't
- 1:00:09working or something along those lines where she's had the doubts
- 1:00:13about their relationship. And of course, this gets
- 1:00:17resolved by the end of the movie.
- 1:00:21But they don't. Gun doesn't do this thing where
- 1:00:23he tries to fix it right away or he tries to go and have them say
- 1:00:28I love you to each other. In that moment.
- 1:00:31He makes the fight believable that they both kind of walk
- 1:00:35away. This happened.
- 1:00:38There's no unhappening what this is.
- 1:00:41And we just have to have faith that later on they'll reconcile.
- 1:00:46And they do. And it's beautiful.
- 1:00:49And I love the moment that they do reconcile.
- 1:00:51I love the we we get to see Superman or Clark and Lois's
- 1:00:55first I love yous to each other, what we've never really seen
- 1:01:00before. You go back and you re watch the
- 1:01:04Christopher Reeve movies and the the relationship with Clark and
- 1:01:08Lois is a little bit weird. It's it's, it's old, old
- 1:01:13Superman style where she clearly falls in love with Superman.
- 1:01:16Here. I believe that Lois fell in love
- 1:01:19with Clark 1st and the Superman she's going to call him out on
- 1:01:23as flaws. And I, I appreciate that and I
- 1:01:28appreciate that it came so early in the movie too, because it
- 1:01:31shapes what he does in the rest of the movie.
- 1:01:35He hesitates at times and he calls himself on that.
- 1:01:39In the end, when he confronts Luther, he says, I make
- 1:01:42mistakes. And that is the Superman that we
- 1:01:45need because of the allegory. He is, you know, somebody that
- 1:01:56is an illegal alien that is constantly worried about making
- 1:02:01the wrong choices but doing the right thing nonetheless.
- 1:02:06And he's going to make mistakes. He's three years into his
- 1:02:09career. We're not seeing a Superman that
- 1:02:12is just fresh off the boat first putting on the costume for the
- 1:02:15first time. For three years he's been doing
- 1:02:18good. And for the first time, he makes
- 1:02:21mistakes and we see his reasons. He's like, people were going to
- 1:02:27die. And she's like, I get that, but
- 1:02:33and it's that moment that we need to take the breath with
- 1:02:36Superman. And that's something that a lot
- 1:02:39of directors have haven't done with Superman before.
- 1:02:42That moment to breathe. I never felt that in Man of
- 1:02:46Steel. I never felt that in Batman
- 1:02:50versus Superman. I never felt that in Justice
- 1:02:53League where it's like, hey, are we doing the right thing instead
- 1:02:59of just doing? And I think that message of that
- 1:03:03scene where Lois is is interviewing him, there's some
- 1:03:08humor in there. I like their little banter of,
- 1:03:11you know, you've come out under a lot of heat.
- 1:03:14And he's like, it's been a lot. Yeah, it's been a lot.
- 1:03:17It was really cute. Or the fact that she brought up
- 1:03:22social media and then knew what buttons to push just like any
- 1:03:28good significant other, be it a wife or even a husband knows how
- 1:03:35to what what buttons to push. She uses that.
- 1:03:39That's what was it super jerk or something like that?
- 1:03:42Super. Shit.
- 1:03:43Super shit, that's what it is. Super shit.
- 1:03:46And he's like, you know, I don't like that.
- 1:03:48And we realize that he doesn't like because he doesn't like
- 1:03:51language. And it's just those buttons that
- 1:03:56she knows how to push. And it just shows you that Dunn
- 1:04:00did his homework. He understands who Lois is at
- 1:04:04her core. And she has always been.
- 1:04:07She's never since like the 90s, she's never been the damsel in
- 1:04:14distress. She's always been the one to
- 1:04:17stand her on her own 2 feet to ask the tough questions.
- 1:04:25And he, he understood that and he showed us this and this idea
- 1:04:28of her being punk rock. I love that whole, I know you
- 1:04:32brought it up in the beginning of this, but that whole
- 1:04:35conversation of punk rock and he's like Clark's like, no, I'm,
- 1:04:41I'm punk rock too. And I like this, this and this,
- 1:04:44the Mighty Crab Joys and stuff like that.
- 1:04:49And a quick aside too. My wife is giving me a look
- 1:04:52because I was the one to teach my wife this Superman is a big
- 1:04:56music guy in the comics. In fact, his favorite band, if
- 1:05:02you don't know, this is Metallica, which is mine, which
- 1:05:05is my wife's favorite band. She mentions and I, I, I wish I
- 1:05:09had written down that there's no Metallica in the soundtrack.
- 1:05:13She's mad there's no Metallica in the sound.
- 1:05:14I wonder if. We'll see him like come into
- 1:05:17being a fan of Metallica because if it's that big of a thing, I
- 1:05:20mean, and that seems like it's right up James Gunn's alley, is
- 1:05:24to incorporate because he made a whole playlist for each
- 1:05:27character. And this was the first James
- 1:05:30Gunn movie since Scooby-doo that didn't have like the official
- 1:05:40soundtrack that we hear in the movie.
- 1:05:43There's like 1 licensed song and that is when Mr. Terrific is
- 1:05:47doing his thing. I was fully expecting to come
- 1:05:51into this with a Guardians of the Galaxy level soundtrack.
- 1:05:55And I was like, if you were to place money and like hey George,
- 1:05:58what songs are going to be on there?
- 1:06:00I'm like there's going to be some Metallica because of this,
- 1:06:03this and this. He tells Superboy that he is a
- 1:06:05metallic. He owns every Metallica CD and
- 1:06:10here they have an argument about punk rock and bands and she
- 1:06:14mentions real bands. And then he brings up the James
- 1:06:17Gunn created Mighty Crab Joys. And I kind of look at my wife
- 1:06:22and I go, yet nobody brings up Green Day.
- 1:06:26OK, I got a little bit upset about that.
- 1:06:28But this idea that she punk rock, not hi, whatever.
- 1:06:36Green Day's not recent. They're 80s now.
- 1:06:40Anyways, I like this idea of that kindness being punk rock,
- 1:06:49of Lois being punk rock in a way to rebel against her father, who
- 1:06:55those of us know her father is military, that she was an army
- 1:07:01brat, that she moved around a lot.
- 1:07:03She never got to have roots. She had to take care of her
- 1:07:05little sister as well. It makes sense that she would
- 1:07:09be, yeah, that it makes sense that she would be punk rock.
- 1:07:14And again, this goes into the whole thing of how real he makes
- 1:07:18his characters and how we can evolve them.
- 1:07:26It would be so easy to make a movie that would have been super
- 1:07:30cheesy like Batman and Robin back in the day because that is
- 1:07:37what a lot of people think Superman is and he was able to
- 1:07:41place this heart in with almost every single character.
- 1:07:45Like when we meet the Justice King, they call Superman out on
- 1:07:52a ship for not taking care of business.
- 1:07:55We have this Kaiju scenario, which I loved because it was so
- 1:08:02random. I had so many questions about
- 1:08:05how this Kaiju came to be and they kind of swept it under the
- 1:08:11rug and that's where it felt like an old animated series
- 1:08:14episode. Don't question it, just it's a
- 1:08:17Kaiju, what more do you want? It's a Kaiju fight.
- 1:08:20Just take it. It's just.
- 1:08:22Happening. Yeah, it's happening.
- 1:08:24So, you know, the Justice Gang comes out and Guy Gardner and
- 1:08:30Mr. Terrific call him out on his shit.
- 1:08:32Like, yeah, you're saving people, but how much damage is
- 1:08:35being done? And we realize, yeah, this Clark
- 1:08:39is still learning the ropes. But we also have this beautiful
- 1:08:43moment where he's like, we can save this creature or at least
- 1:08:47find a way to put it down humanely.
- 1:08:51And he has to watch in horror as these other heroes kill it in a
- 1:08:55horrific way. When you really think about the
- 1:08:58way Mr. Terrific kills it, it's really kind of horrific.
- 1:09:03Like he sends those Spears down its throat and like, blows up
- 1:09:07his stomach and it's just like, oh God.
- 1:09:12But it's that humanity, too, where it's like, I understand
- 1:09:17why Guy Gardner is getting in Superman's face.
- 1:09:22I get why hot girl just wants to go back to wherever she hangs
- 1:09:32out. She's done with this.
- 1:09:33Like whatever, right? You know, this is clearly an
- 1:09:36everyday occurrence for her or Mr. Terrific.
- 1:09:41Like basically telling them you got to be smarter.
- 1:09:44And then you realize that this is somebody like Lex that is
- 1:09:48always the smartest one in the room because we haven't met
- 1:09:52Batman yet. We know Batman is around.
- 1:09:54We saw him in, we saw him in Creature Commandos, you know,
- 1:10:00that flash of taking down Doctor Phosphorus.
- 1:10:03And we know that Batman is always going to be one of the
- 1:10:06other smartest ones in the room. But it's this humanity that he
- 1:10:12gives the other heroes as well. And that's where I want to come
- 1:10:16into talking about a lesser known hero, and that was
- 1:10:20Metamorpho because we were introduced to Metamorpho in this
- 1:10:24movie. When Superman is eventually
- 1:10:28captured, he turns himself in very much.
- 1:10:31And I've seen a lot of the Steiner Bros going Snyder did
- 1:10:34it, you know, because he turns himself in to the authorities
- 1:10:40after Lex leaks the the true recording of what his parents
- 1:10:48said. And he turns himself in and it's
- 1:10:53all for Lex to get him in the secret prison, which by the way,
- 1:10:56back to Lex being petty taking your ex from it looks like prom.
- 1:11:03That girl looked like she was still in a prom dress years
- 1:11:06later and locking her in this prison.
- 1:11:10Damn. But we're introducing Metamorpho
- 1:11:15and Metamorpho is I have always been a fan of the lesser heroes.
- 1:11:21I know I'm a huge Superman fan and he's like my hero.
- 1:11:26But when it comes to DC, they have all these.
- 1:11:28I mean, Marvel does too, don't get me wrong.
- 1:11:32But DC has a lot of great lesser heroes.
- 1:11:35Like one of my all time favorites is Mr. Miracle from
- 1:11:40the New Gods. And another one is I've always
- 1:11:45really liked Metamorpho and he is a character that is like
- 1:11:48crafted for James Gunn. He is a hero that looks like a
- 1:11:54monster. And we don't get a lot of back
- 1:11:57story. We get no back story.
- 1:11:59Like how was Metamorpho? Metamorpho?
- 1:12:03Well, if you want to know, go read the comics, go watch
- 1:12:06Justice League the animated series.
- 1:12:08We get no back story. We just get this guy that is a
- 1:12:11prison cell that can change his body into the elements and he's
- 1:12:18used to torture Superman because he can make his body into
- 1:12:22kryptonite. And then we have this really
- 1:12:27broken hearted guy in Metamorpho that he doesn't want to do this,
- 1:12:32but he is doing it for his child.
- 1:12:35And we learned that he has this weird looking creature baby that
- 1:12:41is literally situated in a cell across from him that he has to
- 1:12:45watch have a gun to his head every single day.
- 1:12:52And he tortures Superman for God.
- 1:12:54It feels like 20-30 minutes of this movie.
- 1:12:57I mean, it probably wasn't. It just felt like a very long
- 1:12:59time. I think the actor played it so
- 1:13:07well. Metamorpho looks so amazing and
- 1:13:10I just felt for this characters that I just wanted to hug him by
- 1:13:14the time that he got out and he met the other Justice Gang
- 1:13:18members and like you, you should join us.
- 1:13:22And he's like, I love that name and Guy Gardner's like you're
- 1:13:26in. I just wanted to hug Metamorpho
- 1:13:30like he was just this character that I was just and I don't
- 1:13:34think we've seen the last of him.
- 1:13:36I don't think he was a one off. I think this is a character Gun
- 1:13:40has waited to use because he is that lesser known character and
- 1:13:46that's what Gun thrives at. He takes the Guardians of the
- 1:13:49Galaxy, who up until the movie were honestly lesser known
- 1:13:54heroes. In Marvel Comics.
- 1:13:56They didn't have the presence of the X-Men or Spider Man or
- 1:14:00Daredevil or The Avengers, right?
- 1:14:03They were there and they sometimes did things and then he
- 1:14:08got it and they became popular and they they their books sell
- 1:14:11well. Or they used to.
- 1:14:13I haven't checked recently. Metamorphose, one of those
- 1:14:18characters that I think is designed for him.
- 1:14:20He took the Suicide Squad and he made us care about Peacemaker,
- 1:14:26who Christopher Smith has always been a lesser character in the
- 1:14:31cartoons and in the comics. He brought in Blood Sport and we
- 1:14:38cared about him. Like what?
- 1:14:41And I do because we were establishing the the Justice or
- 1:14:47the Suicide Squad. Sorry that Superman was already
- 1:14:51a thing because Bloodsport nearly killed him.
- 1:14:55I would be happy if we saw that flashback now.
- 1:15:01Possibly maybe an animated form. I think it would be interesting.
- 1:15:06What I like about this movie was he introduced all these
- 1:15:09characters and a lot of people were complaining or some people
- 1:15:12were complaining online. Not a lot of people actually.
- 1:15:14There's been a lot of love for this movie.
- 1:15:16If if our your listeners are are wondering like even within not
- 1:15:23just our group that you run like there's a lot of love.
- 1:15:27I mean, sure, we'll get comments of somebody calling it crap or
- 1:15:31something like that occasionally, whatever.
- 1:15:34Edge Lords will be edge Lords. But outside of our group,
- 1:15:38there's a lot of love for this. And I get some of the complaints
- 1:15:42that others are saying that there was too many characters.
- 1:15:45No, there weren't. You dealt with it with Guardians
- 1:15:48of the Galaxy. You can deal with it here.
- 1:15:53It was rushed in the beginning, I felt, because he was like
- 1:15:56trying to get all these characters on screen.
- 1:15:58We met the Justice Gang within maybe the 1st 30 minutes of the
- 1:16:04movie, maybe 40. We met them early on.
- 1:16:09And then he establishes the characters.
- 1:16:12He builds the characters. We learned for the first time
- 1:16:16that the Green Lanterns, at least in popular media, those
- 1:16:22that don't watch cartoons or something, have an oath.
- 1:16:25We didn't get to hear Guy Gardner and tell us what the
- 1:16:27oath is. He says, you know, we are the of
- 1:16:30the cloth. I love that we are the cloth,
- 1:16:36but I also love that this Superman is really trusting too
- 1:16:40because we it comes to find out that the Justice Gang all know
- 1:16:44who Superman is, even Guy Gardner.
- 1:16:48Which OK, I can understand Mr. Terrific knowing, but this
- 1:16:56Superman is kind of unlike other Superman that we've had before.
- 1:17:01He is he is the opposite of the coin of what's Snyder did.
- 1:17:08Steiner made his Superman very close to the close to the belt.
- 1:17:12Like I honestly don't even know if he I felt like he fully
- 1:17:16trusted Lois in those movies. He's even more trusting in some
- 1:17:24ways than Christopher Reeve's character was.
- 1:17:27We saw it wasn't until the 2nd movie that he really struggled
- 1:17:30with telling Lois who he was Here.
- 1:17:35Superman and Lois have been or Clark and Lois have been
- 1:17:38together. I think they said what 3 months?
- 1:17:42I can't remember. Three months.
- 1:17:44Three months and she already knows who he is.
- 1:17:47Now again, this comes back to the Did she figure it out?
- 1:17:52Did he tell her? We don't know, but three months
- 1:17:56into a relationship, it's also interesting because we get to
- 1:18:01see the first, like I mentioned before, the 1st I love you,
- 1:18:05Yeah, which my wife and I are a sucker for.
- 1:18:07We love all the romantic, romantic stuff like that.
- 1:18:12But he's the one who says it first, which is, which is
- 1:18:17different because it's always been kind of Lois telling
- 1:18:20Superman, I love you or something like that.
- 1:18:25And we don't get her I love you until the end of the movie,
- 1:18:28which is well deserved. One of my favorite moments of
- 1:18:30the movie. But I this Superman is trusting.
- 1:18:36He trusts the people from Metropolis.
- 1:18:39When he gets his butt kicked, he's saved by a shawarma.
- 1:18:44Was it a shawarma or a vendor or something?
- 1:18:48I forget what he was, what he was selling, but he's like, you
- 1:18:51ate my food once and you told me who?
- 1:18:54I don't know if it was Shorma, I thought it was like a hot dog or
- 1:18:56something. I can't remember now I don't.
- 1:18:59Remember. I can tell you later when we got
- 1:19:01to see the movie again, but the people love him and that's where
- 1:19:08that betrayal comes in. And I think gun Places as well.
- 1:19:11When the truth of that video comes out, it plays on two
- 1:19:14things in our real world very well #1 how fast social media
- 1:19:19will turn on somebody. Yeah.
- 1:19:22And this is something that we have witnessed in the past 10 to
- 1:19:2515 years, whether it's in. It's also playing off of
- 1:19:31something that gun had to deal with too 'cause if your
- 1:19:35listeners remember, it was a few years ago that gun was fired
- 1:19:39from Marvel. Yeah.
- 1:19:41For something in old tweets like like.
- 1:19:44They weren't like, I will say they were messed up tweets.
- 1:19:48They were pretty old. So it's like.
- 1:19:49And they weren't. But like, this idea of people
- 1:19:53can change, people can grow. But I mean, I think this was how
- 1:19:57fast they turn on him. And his guilt of it too, is
- 1:20:04really played into a factor that affects us as a real world.
- 1:20:10This is somebody that is in the limelight.
- 1:20:14And it's refreshing because the people that are in the limelight
- 1:20:17that make mistakes we don't often see.
- 1:20:20Take responsibility for it And the heartbreaking thing is Clark
- 1:20:25takes responsibility for something that is not his fault.
- 1:20:29He's taking responsibility for the sense of a parent, which no
- 1:20:34child should have to do. I.
- 1:20:36Agree. You know, and I think it's
- 1:20:42really interesting in the that social media aspect we can
- 1:20:45bounce into the idea of the very funny thing we learn about in
- 1:20:49the pocket universe of Lex has been behind the smear campaign
- 1:20:57of Superman all along using social media.
- 1:21:03I want to say Twitter. It acts because it basically
- 1:21:05probably was, but and he's done the same thing he does to
- 1:21:13crypto, which is reprehensible, but he puts like probes inside a
- 1:21:17little monkey's heads and he has monkeys on typewriters writing
- 1:21:22out these this hate campaign, which was just such beautiful
- 1:21:25social commentary that I, I, I felt that gun threw out there.
- 1:21:32I applauded. I applauded.
- 1:21:34He went there and I kind of, I kind of want to make that my new
- 1:21:39thing is I want to get a still image of the monkeys.
- 1:21:43And anytime we have somebody like in the group or outside of
- 1:21:46the group just smearing hate just because I just want to post
- 1:21:50the picture of the monkeys. Or maybe you should do it as
- 1:21:55your moderator. The past few days, that's what
- 1:21:58my head has gone back to. I was like, oh, another monkey.
- 1:22:01Yeah, yeah. It's amazing how much social
- 1:22:05commentary, not just like, and it goes back to this idea of
- 1:22:08Superman is woke. Comic books have always been
- 1:22:12woke. There's difference between this
- 1:22:16idea of this woke miss. I hate using that stupid term,
- 1:22:21but the social commentary that he puts in as well, Lex's social
- 1:22:25commentary for all those billionaires that people fall
- 1:22:30off their feet, whether they are YouTube personalities or in
- 1:22:36government or government adjacent.
- 1:22:39And he does it beautifully. And we understand that maybe Lex
- 1:22:46before his obsession with Superman had the best
- 1:22:49intentions. Sure.
- 1:22:53Lex Diaz, I wanted to make Metropolis better.
- 1:22:58I wanted to make the world a better place.
- 1:23:01And then he comes along and they look up to him and then you just
- 1:23:06see that you are so toxic. And I feel like this is Gun
- 1:23:13Lane, the groundwork of, yes, Lex is a horrible person, but
- 1:23:18eventually I can show audiences where that horribleness came
- 1:23:21from. Maybe I'll introduce his father
- 1:23:24later on, kind of like Smallville did.
- 1:23:25Like we understood where that Lex was coming from.
- 1:23:29Lionel Luther was a horrible, horrible person.
- 1:23:34And we we, we understood that. And then we also have these
- 1:23:39beautiful moments where it's like someone likes the social
- 1:23:42commentary, if you will, of Eve Tessmacher, who she is, seems
- 1:23:48like the stereotypical influencer that she is with a
- 1:23:52person in power simply because they are in power.
- 1:23:57And then it comes along later on that the one person that treated
- 1:24:01she thought treated her right was Jimmy Olsen, who we learn
- 1:24:10has not treated her right, that he's flawed too.
- 1:24:16He put up boundaries. That girl's obsessed.
- 1:24:18Put your boundaries up, King. He also did put shrimp toes in.
- 1:24:23And you know what? If she has those monster,
- 1:24:27where's the lie? Monster toes.
- 1:24:30Monster toes. That's right.
- 1:24:31Monster toes. I'm mad they didn't show us.
- 1:24:35I want to I. Feel like there's some people
- 1:24:37out there that would want them to be shown but.
- 1:24:40Yeah. Oh, I mean.
- 1:24:42So fast. I just really love that they did
- 1:24:45so in the original Superman movie.
- 1:24:46That's where Eve Kassmocker comes from.
- 1:24:52She too, helps Superman. She has that moment where it's
- 1:24:55like, will you save my mother? And then she kisses them before
- 1:24:59she takes off the kryptonite and all that stuff.
- 1:25:02Here she turns over state evidence, if you will, to Jimmy
- 1:25:05Olsen, and he gets it all. And he thinks it's just a bunch
- 1:25:09of selfies and he's like, God damn it.
- 1:25:14And then you leave it to Lois to kind of like turn the she takes
- 1:25:19her phone and turns it sideways and and zooms in.
- 1:25:23She's like, wait a second, We realized that Eve and this is up
- 1:25:28Jane's gun alley. And he's it says commentary that
- 1:25:32maybe some of these girls online that appear stupid aren't as
- 1:25:35stupid as they seem. She's been laying the groundwork
- 1:25:40to betray Lex if he ever hurts her.
- 1:25:42And there is a moment in the movie where he throws a mug at
- 1:25:46her. And as soon as that happens, my
- 1:25:50wife has texted me in theater and she kisses and she's like,
- 1:25:54oh, and I'm so I'm with it. I'm like, leave the leave the
- 1:25:56guy. And she she does, she turns us
- 1:25:58all over to to Jimmy. And it's everything they need to
- 1:26:01incriminate Lex. And really, it's not Superman
- 1:26:06that does Lex in in the movie. It's crypto and it's it's the
- 1:26:12evidence. It's it's Jimmy and it's it's
- 1:26:15Lois. And I love when they're going to
- 1:26:18help and they're in that that T-Mobile or whatever they he
- 1:26:23invented for this movie that Mister Terrific uses.
- 1:26:27Yeah. That garage door scene makes me
- 1:26:29laugh, but I love that it's the lessers that are able to
- 1:26:44overcome this billionaire through the power of journalism
- 1:26:53or through Don't be cruel to animals you Dick.
- 1:26:57That, that was the one I was like full support 100%.
- 1:27:01And we we've learned that they actually cut out a scene with
- 1:27:04crypto because they, I guess there's a scene where they, I
- 1:27:08imagine, use kryptonite to weaken them and Lex like punches
- 1:27:12and and kicks Crypto and they cut that out of the movie.
- 1:27:15I'm like, that's good. That's probably a step too far
- 1:27:18if they showed that. But going kind of going to this
- 1:27:27idea of the way the movie is structured and why I was so
- 1:27:31engrossed throughout this whole movie was he understood the
- 1:27:36assignment of what makes comic books great and something that
- 1:27:41Marvel kind of dances around every once in a while.
- 1:27:46They'll they'll do it is. And I think you're kind of with
- 1:27:50me. I've, you know, listen to some
- 1:27:52of your reviews too. But sometimes in Marvel, we
- 1:27:56wonder, OK, this horrible thing is going on in New York.
- 1:28:01I'm going to use Daredevil, for example.
- 1:28:03Here Fisk is putting martial law on New York City.
- 1:28:12But at the same time, we have the Void coming in, and Void
- 1:28:22wipes out most of New York. What are the other heroes doing
- 1:28:28at this time? Does does Fisk just like, is it
- 1:28:34even going to be bring up? Of course not.
- 1:28:36Marvel's never brought it up. You know it took them years to
- 1:28:41bring up the the giant celestial God in the ocean.
- 1:28:47They wanted us to forget about that so bad.
- 1:28:49They did and we did it. But Gun showed us that these
- 1:28:57characters are all intertwined in some way, shape or form, that
- 1:29:02there are other heroes in Metropolis and when shit hits
- 1:29:06the fan, they're going to show up.
- 1:29:10Now, are they going to be a good team?
- 1:29:11Probably not. I feel like the Justice Gang is
- 1:29:15not really a good team. In fact, one of my favorite
- 1:29:17moments is where we go to Clark's apartment and Lois
- 1:29:23confronts him and outside of his window we see the Justice Gang
- 1:29:26fighting something. And us comic book fans, we
- 1:29:30thought it was the Sun Eater from Grant Morrison's All Star
- 1:29:35Superman because it looks just like that.
- 1:29:37And we have a great moment, an Easter egg moment where Lois
- 1:29:45looks out the window and she goes, aren't you going to help
- 1:29:47them? And Superman is exhausted and
- 1:29:50he's tired. And he goes, Nah, they got this
- 1:29:53covered. It's just an interdimensional
- 1:29:56imp, which I squealed because that means the Justice Gang.
- 1:30:03We're dealing most likely with Mr. Mixie Pitilik.
- 1:30:09And I feel like that was a nod for Mr. Mixie Piddlich.
- 1:30:12And I was very excited about that because we know that James
- 1:30:19Gunn likes those lesser characters.
- 1:30:22He's already mentioned that he loves Bat Night, which is the
- 1:30:26Mr. Mixie Piddlich version of of Batman, if you will.
- 1:30:34So that was a nice little nod, but it's going to show us that
- 1:30:38especially in Metropolis, Superman isn't always needed.
- 1:30:42And he knows when to step back and let police handle it, let
- 1:30:48firefighters handle it, let the other heroes handle it.
- 1:30:52And unlike Marvel, we see what kind of is going on.
- 1:30:58And I hope Marvel kind of sees this and does a little shift.
- 1:31:04Not trying to RIP on Marvel, but it was nice to see this moment
- 1:31:07where in the background we saw other heroes doing their thing.
- 1:31:11Did we get to see that full thing?
- 1:31:14No, but on Daredevil if the city is on lockdown and martial law,
- 1:31:21it would have been nice just to hear a whip in the background or
- 1:31:27see somebody webbed to a wall. Did we have to see Spider Man
- 1:31:31himself? Well, that's all.
- 1:31:33That's Sony, though. Like that one, I can't look at
- 1:31:36them. It's such a trashy situation.
- 1:31:38But that one I was like, there's no way.
- 1:31:40I know. But.
- 1:31:42Here we got to see that moment and that is, I mean, there's no
- 1:31:45rights issues per SE. So it was very cool to see this
- 1:31:50moment of other heroes operating in this city.
- 1:31:54And we know because of some Easter eggs throughout that he
- 1:31:59also did his homework. He told us in an interview or I
- 1:32:04listened to an interview, that there are no real world
- 1:32:09counterparts are there are no real world landmarks in his DC
- 1:32:15Universe. There isn't a New York there.
- 1:32:19New York is Metropolis, Yeah. And right across the Bay,
- 1:32:24because we saw on the highway scene that there was a sign for
- 1:32:29the exit for Gotham City, which in the DC Universe is across the
- 1:32:35Bay of Metropolis, which is very cool that he realized that.
- 1:32:40So we know that you know, we know who's in Gotham and we know
- 1:32:47that he's coming. Is DC going to have some messy
- 1:32:52stuff? Are we going to have elseworlds
- 1:32:54like Matt Reeves Batman movies, which are are the first ones
- 1:32:59fantastic. Are they going to be the
- 1:33:02mainstream Batman movies? No, unfortunately, unless he
- 1:33:06changes his mind. But we know that Batman is alive
- 1:33:11and well in this universe. We saw Glenn probably if anybody
- 1:33:13watched Creature Commandos. We know because the opening
- 1:33:18crawl 300 years that for 300 years, superheroes metahumans
- 1:33:24have been a thing. Lex establishes that other
- 1:33:27metahumans don't bother him. It's Superman.
- 1:33:32And I think that's what made me. One of their other reasons that
- 1:33:37made me so happy with this movie was it felt alive.
- 1:33:44See Guardians of the Galaxy. It felt alive, but at the same
- 1:33:48time it didn't feel connected to the other movies, at least not
- 1:33:53right away. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:33:56It felt like the universe was alive and well, but by the time
- 1:33:59of like Guardians Three, my question became like, where's
- 1:34:04Carol Danvers? Haven't they heard of like, you
- 1:34:08know all this? Well, obviously they did,
- 1:34:10because they talked to each other during Avengers and stuff
- 1:34:13like that. But Gunn made Superman's
- 1:34:18universe and the DC Universe feel alive.
- 1:34:23And it felt alive not just through the major characters,
- 1:34:27but the average Joe Smoe on the street.
- 1:34:32The people on the street felt real.
- 1:34:34The fact that he had Superman saved squirrels, yeah, which was
- 1:34:40adorable. Or use his super breath to blow
- 1:34:44away a dog so a dog wouldn't get hurt.
- 1:34:49Or the fact that Lex kidnaps this street vendor and murders
- 1:34:57him in in one of the most brutal scenes in the movie, in my
- 1:35:00opinion, where he blows that guy's brains out in front of
- 1:35:05Superman and Superman can't do anything was such a powerful
- 1:35:11scene because you felt for this character.
- 1:35:15That is a throwaway, should have been a throwaway joke character.
- 1:35:20And he becomes so much more. And I love that that's even a
- 1:35:26step further than we got in Guardians of the Galaxy.
- 1:35:30Like Guardians of the Galaxy, everyone played an important
- 1:35:34part, but that random robot prostitute didn't, right?
- 1:35:39It was a throwaway gag, but here the random person on the street
- 1:35:44mattered. When Perry White is telling the
- 1:35:48different people in the bullpen of the Daily Planet to get up to
- 1:35:51the roof so they could escape, he mentions everybody that we
- 1:35:55have had before we briefly met, and then he picks one random
- 1:36:00person. Now I know it's not a random
- 1:36:02person, it is a character from the comics, but that person had
- 1:36:05no lines in the movie, but we saw him in the background.
- 1:36:08That person mattered and it felt like the real world and it felt
- 1:36:13like the world that we need now. I agree with everything you've
- 1:36:19said, it definitely does feel like this is what we need in the
- 1:36:22world, but we do have to wrap up.
- 1:36:24I'm so sorry my kids are ruining my life back there.
- 1:36:29You don't need to be sorry, it's fine.
- 1:36:32So thank you so much for joining me.
- 1:36:34Like I said, you are the perfect person to come here because you
