Latest / Travel Mug Podcast / How We Reset After a Rough Travel Day
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone and welcome back to the Travel Mug Podcast.
- 0:04I am Jenn joined as always by my partner in podcasting, Meggan.
- 0:09Meggan.
- 0:11This week we are talking about resetting after a rough travel day.
- 0:18We've all had them.
- 0:19They're just part of travel, they're just part of life in general.
- 0:22Yeah, as we discussed they are.
- 0:25Yeah.
- 0:25So, uh, we'll talk about some scenarios that have led to a rough travel day and what we do about them.
- 0:34But Meggan, first I wanna know, have you ever had a standout, like bad travel day?
- 0:41Question and like, I hate to put anything out into the universe.
- 0:43Hopefully the universe isn't listening today.
- 0:45But it's just been a, a few minor things, like grateful that nothing major so far has happened.
- 0:51But the few things that have happened, like we accidentally, and when I say we, I mean Peter, once broke a glass stove top at an Airbnb, which of course we had to pay for.
- 1:03Um, so that was a icky, it wasn't traveling that day, but it was travel related.
- 1:08They did share the cost, so we were lucky.
- 1:11Other than that, uh, rock through the windshield in Iceland.
- 1:14Of course a huge bummer and a huge cost.
- 1:17And then once we nearly landed in Halifax, but due to snow, like last minute, they pulled up and like diverted to Montreal.
- 1:25Coming home from London, we were so close to landing.
- 1:27It was so gross.
- 1:29And then the other thing I would say is a canceled flight so far to Bermuda, so canceled one day and we got out the next.
- 1:36Really minor stuff so far, nothing super tragic during a day.
- 1:39Let's keep it that way.
- 1:40What about you?
- 1:42Yeah.
- 1:43Yeah, for me, we've had, we've had some minor stuff happen and then we've had one day that we call like Jenn and Ryan's bad day, which I think we mentioned this in our, um, couples travel episode.
- 1:54Yeah.
- 1:55But, um, we were in Inverness, Scotland.
- 1:57It started, we arrived at the Inverness airport to pick up our rental car and their system was down, which was like not their fault.
- 2:05So it was obviously disappointing.
- 2:07We ended up standing in line, like waiting for their system to come back online to get our car.
- 2:12Uh, we did eventually get our car a few hours later, but then we were like behind the schedule that I had created.
- 2:19So the made up schedule.
- 2:21Uh, so we did miss, uh, the opening times for the visitor center at the Culloden battlefield, and I'm pretty sure I got hangry in there somewhere on that day.
- 2:35And then.
- 2:36I know, and you're just like driving in an unfamiliar country.
- 2:39And then when we went to return the car, all of the returning spaces were full, so we just had to park it in a random spot.
- 2:45Uh, and also like their counter was closed, so like we couldn't tell them where it was.
- 2:49So they did email me being like, where's the car?
- 2:51And I'm like, it's there.
- 2:52I don't know.
- 2:53Figure it out.
- 2:54Figure it out.
- 2:55And Ryan went to put on the parking brake at one point, and the parking brake was like a thing that you like hooked your finger under and pulled up and the metal had gotten bent and he like cut his finger open and it was just like, this day is just like not our best day.
- 3:11It was a bad day.
- 3:13Yes.
- 3:13Yes.
- 3:14That sounds like a, like a really bad children's book.
- 3:16Jenn and Ryan's bad day.
- 3:18It truly was.
- 3:19It truly was.
- 3:19So the first situation we're gonna talk about is transportation issues.
- 3:24So as I was just saying, we've had a bad car rental day and Right.
- 3:30both of us were trying to like stay positive like we were getting like progressively grumpier, I think, and just like trying to stay positive for each other.
- 3:39Yeah.
- 3:40I think also like with flight delays, I tend to get impatient and it's definitely frustrating, but there's so many factors outside of your control.
- 3:50And I think that the best way to reset during like transportation issues or a lot of the issues really is to just like control the controllables and like, you know, buy travel insurance so that you're covered if, um, your luggage gets lost, for example, build extra time in your schedule in case your flight is delayed or your train is delayed.
- 4:13Don't have anything planned for the minute you land, because chances are you're probably not gonna get to it, you know?
- 4:21that's right.
- 4:22You never know.
- 4:23Yeah.
- 4:23So what about you and transportation issues?
- 4:26How do you usually handle those?
- 4:28Yeah, so when I go to the airport, it is always in the back of my mind from like literally the time that I leave home.
- 4:33Like just that underlying current of like, will things happen when they're supposed to.
- 4:39Yeah.
- 4:39Um, so starting with will I get to the airport on time?
- 4:43Even though it's only like a 25 or 30 minute drive, you never know if there'll be an accident on the highway.
- 4:49Um, will our flight leave on time?
- 4:50Will our luggage get there?
- 4:51Just like an endless list of like questions and I would have to really be honest.
- 4:55Mild concerns, like it doesn't overwhelm me, but I think travel logistics when traveling are always front of mind for sure.
- 5:03We certainly had flight delays and even cancellations and with this one I always try to think like.
- 5:08Okay.
- 5:09There's a good reason I'm sometimes sure that it is BS in terms of like the delays and stuff, but for this one, it is life and death, you know, if the plane actually has something wrong with it.
- 5:19So I try to trust on that one.
- 5:21I try not to judge it too much.
- 5:22I haven't lost luggage yet.
- 5:23I'm sure my time is coming, I know but I know there's a process and we should get things documented in advance and whatnot.
- 5:30Really the stuff like that, I know there's worse things that can happen, so I try to take everything in stride.
- 5:36Like I said, we did have that broken windshield, but it got dealt with in terms of a rental car.
- 5:40So yeah, like I would just say it is about much like you said, controlling the controllables, understanding anything could happen and you can't be ready for every scenario.
- 5:49But I think, you know, understanding that it could happen is part of the, part of the win.
- 5:54Sure.
- 5:55So let's talk about jet lag, because if you are traveling somewhere outside of your time zone, it's likely going to happen.
- 6:01So like most people, I hate being tired, but jet lag is like a different kind of feeling.
- 6:07Because often for us, we fly to Europe from here.
- 6:10It's typically a red eye.
- 6:11Travel is a luxury, so I try to get over myself, but also I cannot sleep on a plane.
- 6:17So while I'm excited for the trip, this part is my least favorite part for sure, and I'm- i'm really not a power through it kind of girl, unless absolutely necessary.
- 6:26I did it once in London and I thought I may pass away.
- 6:29I can do it, but I don't wanna do it.
- 6:31So we just try to check in as soon as possible, sleep for a few hours, and then get back out and explore.
- 6:36I would say maybe going west is a little bit different.
- 6:39I'm not sure how.
- 6:40How far west you've traveled, but um, yeah, you went to the Northwest Territories or to the Yukon.
- 6:45So, yeah, like going from, let's say, Nova Scotia to Vegas is brutal.
- 6:51Um, it's a bit more brutal in some ways because when it's 8:00 PM in Vegas, when most people haven't even gone out yet, it's 12:00 AM here.
- 6:58Yeah, true.
- 6:59And I'm like, I'm like, well, goodnight.
- 7:02, Which isn't really what Vegas is for.
- 7:04So it's not all that fun, but you really do just have to like understand it's gonna happen.
- 7:08Be happy you can travel and try to deal with it as best you can.
- 7:12Yeah, yeah, agreed.
- 7:13Like I don't sleep on planes either, and that does make arrival days difficult.
- 7:18But I also cannot nap, so that that leaves me in the situation of having to power through and understanding that like the first day is gonna suck a little bit.
- 7:32So I do try to get outside to like, get used to the time, you know, the sun.
- 7:39Maybe that will help.
- 7:40And then just go to bed early and hope that that like resets my body.
- 7:46I don't usually knock on wood, have, uh, issues of like jet lag lasting multiple days, but like.
- 7:53I haven't ever traveled so far that like the clock is flipped, you know, so I'm sure that's coming.
- 8:00But, um, we are going to Calgary in September and we booked a flight that
- 8:06leaves Halifax at 8: 00 PM Atlantic, and then we arrive in Calgary at 10 35.
- 8:13leaves Halifax at 8: PM Mountain time, so like middle of the night essentially for us.
- 8:17leaves Halifax at 8: But then I booked a hotel that's in the airport terminal, so we literally like walk off the plane, we're still in the airport, walk into the hotel, check in and sleep.
- 8:28leaves Halifax at 8: I'm hoping that will help us avoid the jet lag.
- 8:33leaves Halifax at 8: Um, I'll, I'll, I'll update you guys in September and see how it goes.
- 8:38leaves Halifax at 8: That's my grand plan.
- 8:39leaves Halifax at 8: I don't know.
- 8:40leaves Halifax at 8: Hopefully it works.
- 8:41leaves Halifax at 8: Alright You definitely let us know how that works out.
- 8:43leaves Halifax at 8: I'm anxious to hear.
- 8:44leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah.
- 8:46leaves Halifax at 8: All right.
- 8:47leaves Halifax at 8: So speaking of tired, let's talk about just like generally being tired on a trip.
- 8:55leaves Halifax at 8: Maybe it's continuation of jet lag or maybe it's just that you've done a lot of stuff.
- 9:00leaves Halifax at 8: So we are Disney World people, which typically means like six or seven days of like 20 to 25,000 steps per day and like long days in the park.
- 9:14leaves Halifax at 8: So like we get tired and we usually try to take breaks like over meal time.
- 9:21leaves Halifax at 8: So usually that means at lunchtime we'll do like a more of a sit down meal so that we get a good break both sitting and in air conditioning, which is important in Florida most of the time.
- 9:36leaves Halifax at 8: Um, and then I usually just try to get a good amount of sleep every night.
- 9:41leaves Halifax at 8: But of course that, you know, can be difficult.
- 9:44leaves Halifax at 8: And I'm getting better at not over planning, so not having us out late and up early in the morning.
- 9:50leaves Halifax at 8: Right.
- 9:51leaves Halifax at 8: I think if you're finding yourself like unbelievably tired every day of your trip, then you should take that as a sign to change your plans.
- 10:01leaves Halifax at 8: Like obviously it's not working for you.
- 10:03leaves Halifax at 8: You're probably planning too much or not planning for enough sleep.
- 10:09leaves Halifax at 8: And I know I've talked about this before, but when we were in our honeymoon and we visited the Palace of Versailles our last day, we did not care about it at all.
- 10:18leaves Halifax at 8: Like Which is such a shame.
- 10:20leaves Halifax at 8: It is such a shame, but we were so like dead on our feet tired that I just really didn't care.
- 10:28leaves Halifax at 8: And it essentially ended up being like a waste of money Yeah.
- 10:31leaves Halifax at 8: us.
- 10:31leaves Halifax at 8: Right.
- 10:32leaves Halifax at 8: So it, it also depends on how long your trip is.
- 10:36leaves Halifax at 8: Like we mentioned on our, uh, planning a quick trip episode a little while ago.
- 10:41leaves Halifax at 8: Like if you're planning on visiting a city for two days, uh, you know, it's much easier than to push through being tired Yeah.
- 10:49leaves Halifax at 8: know, on a longer trip.
- 10:51leaves Halifax at 8: Definitely.
- 10:52leaves Halifax at 8: And that happens for sure.
- 10:54leaves Halifax at 8: And when I go to Europe, like I start off tired, I stay tired, and I've been tired the entire trip.
- 10:59leaves Halifax at 8: And that's really just the reality of it.
- 11:01leaves Halifax at 8: And to combat that, we really do rest when we can.
- 11:04leaves Halifax at 8: And I'm not ashamed to nap.
- 11:06leaves Halifax at 8: Um, if it means like we can get back out there afterwards.
- 11:09leaves Halifax at 8: So like I don't let it end my day.
- 11:11leaves Halifax at 8: But if it has to happen, it has to happen.
- 11:13leaves Halifax at 8: And vacation is often go, go, go.
- 11:15leaves Halifax at 8: But like we've talked about before, it should be enjoyable.
- 11:18leaves Halifax at 8: And that means enjoying it with like a clear head.
- 11:20leaves Halifax at 8: So we do take naps, or at least veg sometimes.
- 11:23leaves Halifax at 8: I don't even need to nap.
- 11:24leaves Halifax at 8: If you can just like power down a little bit.
- 11:27leaves Halifax at 8: Um, that really, that works too.
- 11:29leaves Halifax at 8: I remember in our 2022 trip to Europe over multiple countries and our first big post pandemic trip, we wanted to do like all the things.
- 11:36leaves Halifax at 8: We were so Randy to get like out there.
- 11:40leaves Halifax at 8: And we did, but I just kept saying to Peter, I've never been this tired in my entire life.
- 11:45leaves Halifax at 8: And I think I've mentioned this before too, but we stayed in Frankfurt at the end before we flew home and there was a heat wave and one day we came back to our hotel midday and I laid down and I was sleep in like 30 seconds.
- 11:56leaves Halifax at 8: I swear to God, I was just absolutely wiped out and I don't fall asleep like that.
- 12:01leaves Halifax at 8: But to me it also means like a good trip was had.
- 12:03leaves Halifax at 8: So like you really do have to try to find the balance of like resting so that you can enjoy the other stuff as well, and it doesn't just completely wipe you out.
- 12:12leaves Halifax at 8: for sure.
- 12:14leaves Halifax at 8: Another thing that can happen, of course, is plans not working out.
- 12:16leaves Halifax at 8: So it, that happens.
- 12:18leaves Halifax at 8: And it used, I used to be a really huge control freak on trips if things didn't work out, the anxiety was like immense.
- 12:25leaves Halifax at 8: And now it still bothers me.
- 12:26leaves Halifax at 8: Like I'm not a, I'm not completely rehabbed.
- 12:29leaves Halifax at 8: Um, but also it isn't the end of the world anymore.
- 12:33leaves Halifax at 8: So this has happened certainly before, you know, missed seeing something we wanted to see.
- 12:39leaves Halifax at 8: Like in Iceland, we missed Diamond Beach the first time, or that rooftop bar in Barcelona that I talked about that wasn't what we thought it would be.
- 12:46leaves Halifax at 8: But so far these things have all been minor and I try as hard as I can, although sometimes it is still like quote unquote upsetting to realize not everything is going to go according to planned 'cause.
- 12:56leaves Halifax at 8: That's how life goes.
- 12:59leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah, I think that you and I have both learned that it's okay if things don't work out, like exactly as we've planned.
- 13:06leaves Halifax at 8: Definitely like bailing on that rooftop bar that, uh, wasn't gonna be what you wanted it to be, and that it's like really okay to change your plans if you're not feeling something.
- 13:18leaves Halifax at 8: it can be super disappointing for sure.
- 13:21leaves Halifax at 8: And, you know, I remember being really sad that we missed out on the colloden uh, visitors center.
- 13:26leaves Halifax at 8: Like we still visited the battlefield and walked around, but without the visitor center, you just miss out on so much like context.
- 13:33leaves Halifax at 8: Right?
- 13:34leaves Halifax at 8: So I was there, but like at the end of the day, it's not that big of a deal, right?
- 13:40leaves Halifax at 8: Um, and then sometimes, like, you know, if things don't work out, sometimes you find something more fun when you bail on your original plans.
- 13:47leaves Halifax at 8: So you never know.
- 13:49leaves Halifax at 8: You never know what the universe has in store.
- 13:52leaves Halifax at 8: True.
- 13:53leaves Halifax at 8: All right, let's talk about how to reset if you get sick or injured on your trip.
- 14:00leaves Halifax at 8: So, a knock on wood, we haven't had any major issues personally with getting sick or injured.
- 14:06leaves Halifax at 8: We have like, of course, had minor colds or like sore feet or what have you.
- 14:13leaves Halifax at 8: Actually, in November when we were in Toronto for our Christmasy trip, I only, I wore my shoes.
- 14:21leaves Halifax at 8: Like the one pair of it was my, um, Blundstones.
- 14:25leaves Halifax at 8: So I wore those on the plane.
- 14:26leaves Halifax at 8: I didn't bring anything else.
- 14:27leaves Halifax at 8: They actually really hurt my feet walking like 10 hours a day in them.
- 14:32leaves Halifax at 8: Uh, so we actually had to pivot a bit because, I couldn't walk as much as I wanted Yeah.
- 14:39leaves Halifax at 8: Um, and we just had to take more breaks than I usually would.
- 14:42leaves Halifax at 8: So this actually led to us hanging out in the hotel lobby and people watching, which is not something we ever do, and it actually ended up being a lot of fun.
- 14:54leaves Halifax at 8: And so I would say if your feeling under the weather or not up to walking around.
- 14:59leaves Halifax at 8: It's okay to rest and like chill.
- 15:02leaves Halifax at 8: And I have anxiety about like wasting time , when I'm traveling and it's a huge like mindset shift to like convince myself to be okay with resting.
- 15:12leaves Halifax at 8: So I would say like, unless you're like sick or like contagious or like, you know, need to be close to a bathroom or something, you can rest your feet in a cafe or in a park instead of just your room.
- 15:25leaves Halifax at 8: And then on the flip side of that, like I have traveled with other people who've had like major medical incidents and ended up in the hospital and in that case, having travel medical insurance definitely reduced so much anxiety for everyone involved.
- 15:42leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah, no, I can imagine for sure.
- 15:45leaves Halifax at 8: So we've had a few minor things happen.
- 15:47leaves Halifax at 8: Peter usually gets sick when we go to resorts and we now do take prescribed medicine with us.
- 15:52leaves Halifax at 8: That always works for him.
- 15:54leaves Halifax at 8: So we did learn from that.
- 15:55leaves Halifax at 8: We once did a beach walk, um, and I injured one of my heels.
- 15:58leaves Halifax at 8: I couldn't really walk very well the next day after that.
- 16:00leaves Halifax at 8: I'm a really bad heel walker and I didn't wear shoes.
- 16:03leaves Halifax at 8: Um, and three years later it actually is not back to normal.
- 16:08leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah.
- 16:09leaves Halifax at 8: Um.
- 16:10leaves Halifax at 8: So, yeah, you do work around it.
- 16:12leaves Halifax at 8: You just try to manage it.
- 16:13leaves Halifax at 8: You try to anticipate stuff that may happen, but understand that there's no planning for everything and you have to be okay with risk.
- 16:19leaves Halifax at 8: Honestly, as soon as you leave your apartment or your house, it really, it really is how things go.
- 16:24leaves Halifax at 8: Um, I've mentioned before that I did have a UTI in Iceland, which it was terrible way to start the trip, but it got handled.
- 16:30leaves Halifax at 8: We found a clinic.
- 16:31leaves Halifax at 8: I got medication we carried on, and now I do actually travel with medication for that.
- 16:35leaves Halifax at 8: So, so far they've all been learning experiences with nothing major, which I would like to keep that going.
- 16:43leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah, same.
- 16:45leaves Halifax at 8: Yes, indeed.
- 16:46leaves Halifax at 8: Let's talk about feeling anxious.
- 16:47leaves Halifax at 8: 'cause I think that that's a big one.
- 16:49leaves Halifax at 8: When it comes to travel, there's so much to consider.
- 16:52leaves Halifax at 8: I do have some anticipatory anxiety, and as I have aged into like perimenopause, um, certainly experienced a bit more than normal, but so far my travel anxiety has remained relatively low.
- 17:06leaves Halifax at 8: Like, yes, I check my passport 123 times, before we leave, while we're at the airport, et cetera.
- 17:12leaves Halifax at 8: Um, I do worry about, of course, getting places safely, traveling safely in a foreign country.
- 17:17leaves Halifax at 8: Catching public transportation and so on.
- 17:19leaves Halifax at 8: But for me, nothing like out of the ordinary or crippling to combat it, I would say I try to keep a line of communication open with Peter.
- 17:27leaves Halifax at 8: He reads me like a book he has memorized, which is very irritating.
- 17:31leaves Halifax at 8: Um, and hiding things never works.
- 17:33leaves Halifax at 8: So I do just try to voice it, rather than stew on it.
- 17:37leaves Halifax at 8: I'm sure he has his own concerns or worries, but ensuring I'm honest is a really big one for me, even if it's foolish.
- 17:44leaves Halifax at 8: Or not necessary, like I really just have to be open about it and he usually has good advice and isn't bothered by the same things that I'm bothered by.
- 17:52leaves Halifax at 8: So I have found that to be helpful when I don't feel like, like I'm alone in it, if that makes sense.
- 17:59leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah, I definitely agree.
- 18:00leaves Halifax at 8: Like it's better to like share whatever your worries are with someone.
- 18:05leaves Halifax at 8: And so for me sometimes like the anxiety is not necessarily like related to, um.
- 18:13leaves Halifax at 8: You know, something that's going on, just like kind of maybe like generally feeling anxious and like one time I was at Disney with my friend, it was just the two of us and I was feeling like a bit anxious that day for whatever reason, like nothing really going on.
- 18:27leaves Halifax at 8: And at the end of the night we were waiting for the fireworks at Magic Kingdom and it was so crowded, which it often is, but I don't know this particular time and like as a short person in a crowd, like it can feel very claustrophobic because most people are like taller than you.
- 18:45leaves Halifax at 8: Like Right.
- 18:47leaves Halifax at 8: coming in from all angles, if that makes sense.
- 18:50leaves Halifax at 8: Um, anyway, I like told my friend, I feel like we just looked at each other and I was like, Hmm.
- 18:55leaves Halifax at 8: I'm like.
- 18:56leaves Halifax at 8: I'm feeling a little bit like, know, closed in and anxious and she was like, yeah, I'm, I'm good to bail.
- 19:03leaves Halifax at 8: Like, let's get out of here.
- 19:04leaves Halifax at 8: And Right.
- 19:05leaves Halifax at 8: getting out of that crowd was a bit of a nightmare, but I think we both felt better leaving.
- 19:11leaves Halifax at 8: So it was disappointing to, of course, not see the fireworks that night.
- 19:15leaves Halifax at 8: But I have seen them before.
- 19:16leaves Halifax at 8: It wasn't a, you know, it wasn't a once in a lifetime thing for me, but.
- 19:20leaves Halifax at 8: It's good that you voiced it because both of you were kind of feeling the same way and maybe one didn't wanna spoil the time for the other.
- 19:26leaves Halifax at 8: But when you break that ice and say it out loud, somehow it can turn out better.
- 19:30leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah.
- 19:31leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah, I think we were both, both in a better spot after that.
- 19:34leaves Halifax at 8: So Yeah.
- 19:36leaves Halifax at 8: Of traveling with other people, another thing that can uh, come up when you're traveling is not getting along with your travel companions and yeah, that can be so tough.
- 19:50leaves Halifax at 8: So I think like to, to avoid it, hopefully in the first place.
- 19:56leaves Halifax at 8: Like setting expectations before you travel with anyone else.
- 20:00leaves Halifax at 8: I mean, usually if you're traveling with your partner and if you've traveled with them before, they probably know what, what you're like.
- 20:07leaves Halifax at 8: But if you're going with other people, like you don't have to do every single thing together.
- 20:13leaves Halifax at 8: Talk about how you like to travel and what you like to do.
- 20:17leaves Halifax at 8: And I feel like that will come up, uh, when you're planning.
- 20:21leaves Halifax at 8: We've done Disney, uh, with another couple and it went pretty well and actually probably better than I expected because we shared a hotel room as well.
- 20:31leaves Halifax at 8: So it really could have been a make or break friendship trip.
- 20:35leaves Halifax at 8: Um.
- 20:37leaves Halifax at 8: And like we did almost everything together on that trip as well.
- 20:40leaves Halifax at 8: And I think it helps that we're really close friends and they're also Disney people who'd been to Disney before and had a, a similar like park strategy to us.
- 20:50leaves Halifax at 8: And, and we did a lot of planning together.
- 20:53leaves Halifax at 8: other times that I've traveled with friends or family as an adult, like things have gone super well.
- 20:59leaves Halifax at 8: And I think that is because we talked about things in advance and planned time apart.
- 21:05leaves Halifax at 8: And then.
- 21:06leaves Halifax at 8: If it was just me and one other friend, um, like for instance, my best friend and I went to Vegas.
- 21:11leaves Halifax at 8: We had very different ideas of what we wanted to do in Vegas, and we just compromised.
- 21:15leaves Halifax at 8: We kind of did both of the things.
- 21:18leaves Halifax at 8: Right.
- 21:18leaves Halifax at 8: I'm trying to imagine what I would do if I was on a trip, like on the trip and not getting along with the person I was traveling with.
- 21:24leaves Halifax at 8: Like maybe just take a break from each other and then talk about it later if possible.
- 21:29leaves Halifax at 8: But that would be really tough.
- 21:32leaves Halifax at 8: It would be, and I actually don't have much experience with this one either.
- 21:35leaves Halifax at 8: Like in the way that we actually don't usually do big trips with other people.
- 21:39leaves Halifax at 8: We've done a few road trips actually.
- 21:41leaves Halifax at 8: Sometimes on weekends, but really nothing major.
- 21:44leaves Halifax at 8: Um, when we have, there's always minor annoyances because humans like, and it's not necessarily the people, it's just being in close spaces and close spaces all the time.
- 21:54leaves Halifax at 8: But overall, we've been really lucky.
- 21:55leaves Halifax at 8: I think if it did happen some time away, to do your own thing would be key.
- 21:59leaves Halifax at 8: Like a nice reset.
- 22:01leaves Halifax at 8: If it was something a bit more major, I would say open communication would be important depending on the relationship, because who wants a ruined trip?
- 22:09leaves Halifax at 8: You would think neither side.
- 22:11leaves Halifax at 8: Um, there are many worst case scenarios out there, of course, where people just never talk again or come home early, but like may that never happen.
- 22:18leaves Halifax at 8: But it really can vary from like minor annoyances to like really big things.
- 22:22leaves Halifax at 8: And I think maybe you won't even know until you're in the moment and also the individual that you're dealing with.
- 22:28leaves Halifax at 8: Yeah.
- 22:29leaves Halifax at 8: Well, Meggan and I have our first, uh, girl, our first girls trip.
- 22:34leaves Halifax at 8: Uh, just a, a very casual, Airbnb, uh, getaway together, but, so hopefully the podcast will still be happening after, uh, that trip.
- 22:45leaves Halifax at 8: I feel we're gonna be just fine'cause we're just gonna chill.
- 22:48leaves Halifax at 8: So if we get that wrong, we were never meant to be.
- 22:51leaves Halifax at 8: If we can't relax together, we've got other problems.
- 22:55leaves Halifax at 8: Um, so another one is what can you actually do before travel to make travel days easier or make rough travel days easier?
- 23:04leaves Halifax at 8: And I think this is a really great place to finish off because I say this with a grain of salt, of course, because in the moment I would tell myself to just like, shut up already.
- 23:13leaves Halifax at 8: But the same as when you leave your home or go anywhere else, you just need to realize anything could happen, including rough or bad stuff.
- 23:19leaves Halifax at 8: Try to be prepared on your journey with things.
- 23:22leaves Halifax at 8: You know, you need to have close with you at all times.
- 23:25leaves Halifax at 8: So being careful is key.
- 23:27leaves Halifax at 8: If things go awry, try your very best to remain calm.
- 23:31leaves Halifax at 8: Ask for help when you can, or if you need to, even if you don't want to, you know, nobody wants to look foolish or silly, but like take your ego out of it.
- 23:41leaves Halifax at 8: Open communication, like we talked about with your travel partner if applicable.
- 23:44leaves Halifax at 8: And also if you get upset.
- 23:46leaves Halifax at 8: You're human and that's okay, but don't like get dragged down by it or take it out on other people.
- 23:54leaves Halifax at 8: Um, because travel often comes with trying to figure something out, how to get back on track.
- 23:58leaves Halifax at 8: There's a lot of logistics that come up.
- 24:00leaves Halifax at 8: So you'll need your wits about you and also just be kind to yourself, but also be kind to other people.
- 24:07leaves Halifax at 8: I agree with all that.
- 24:08leaves Halifax at 8: My dad has a saying, "another chapter for the book." So just like remembering that rough travel days make interesting or funny memories.
- 24:18leaves Halifax at 8: I think when we were having our bad, our Jenn and Ryan's bad day, we kept saying one day we'll laugh about this.
- 24:27leaves Halifax at 8: I think that's kind of become the joke though, that we're still saying, well, it's not funny yet, but one day we'll laugh about it, but.
- 24:33leaves Halifax at 8: It still might be funny someday.
- 24:35leaves Halifax at 8: Might be funny some days.
- 24:37leaves Halifax at 8: So yeah, definitely mindset is one thing, and then making sure that you're adequately prepared is another.
- 24:43leaves Halifax at 8: So having travel insurance, planning your transportation so you're not rushed to get there before your flight or your train leaves and not planning anything strenuous on your arrival day.
- 24:53leaves Halifax at 8: And yeah, rough travel days happen to everyone and they're just a part of travel life.
- 24:59leaves Halifax at 8: Indeed.
- 25:00leaves Halifax at 8: Well, that is it for this week's episode.
