Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we have an Ask Anything
- 0:19episode. And so today's episode and
- 0:22tomorrow's episode are based on some questions that I'd received
- 0:28and I'm looking forward to diving into these.
- 0:30The first of these was questions about the Book of Enoch.
- 0:35Questions about the Book of Enoch.
- 0:37And if you go I, I've been a Christian a long time.
- 0:40I don't remember hearing about a book of Enoch.
- 0:44You are entirely correct in our scriptures, unless you are
- 0:49perhaps an individual listening and you are part of the
- 0:53Ethiopian Orthodox Church or the, I think I'm pronouncing
- 0:58these correctly, the Eritrean Orthodox Church.
- 1:01You do not have a book of Enoch in your copy of God's Word.
- 1:08So what we're going to talk about today is the book of
- 1:11Enoch, what it is, what it contains, where you can find it,
- 1:17and why it is not included in almost every Christian Bible,
- 1:23and why it does show up in one collection of Christian
- 1:28Scripture. So I want to, on the onset of
- 1:32this, define one quick term by looking at first Peter chapter,
- 1:39sorry, not first Peter, second Peter chapter 1.
- 1:44And this is what we read in verse #20 Above all, you know
- 1:49this. No prophecy of Scripture comes
- 1:52from the prophet's own interpretation, because no
- 1:55prophecy ever came by the will of man.
- 1:58Instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the
- 2:05Holy Spirit, or as we would read in Second Timothy chapter 3,
- 2:09verses 16 and 17. All Scripture is inspired by
- 2:15God. It's breathed out by God, is
- 2:18profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for
- 2:22training in righteousness so that the man of God may be
- 2:25complete, equipped for every good work.
- 2:30So when we talk about what is in Scripture versus what is not in
- 2:34Scripture, it's not a question of necessarily what is true or
- 2:40not true. So gravity, wonderful truth of
- 2:46our world that allows us to be able to make things like planes
- 2:50and, you know, drop pennies from the top of tall buildings and
- 2:54whatnot. Gravity is a great thing.
- 2:57Scripture doesn't detail anything about gravity for us.
- 3:00That does not mean that because gravity is not talked about in
- 3:04the Bible that gravity is not true.
- 3:07All truth is God's truth. So there are things that are
- 3:10true that are not contained within Scripture, but everything
- 3:15in Scripture is emphatically true.
- 3:20We would believe in the inherent infallible Word of God that
- 3:24everything Scripture speaks to it is correct in the way that it
- 3:28speaks. And as I've mentioned before as
- 3:31well, God in Scripture all would use this phrase.
- 3:36I don't know if acquiesces is the best word.
- 3:39I don't even know if I have that grammatically correct.
- 3:43Scripture acquiesces. It is sensitive to our
- 3:48understanding. So there are some things that
- 3:51are talked about in Scripture. The greatest example in my mind
- 3:54is in Joshua chapter 10, where Joshua and the children of
- 3:58Israel, they're in a battle and Joshua prays that the sun would
- 4:04stand still, that it wouldn't go down, that they would still be
- 4:06able to defeat the opposing army.
- 4:10Actually was 5 armies before nightfall came.
- 4:13Because if the night came, then the other armies would be able
- 4:17to disperse and Israel would have to do, you know, kind of
- 4:21guerrilla warfare for a long time yet.
- 4:24So he was hoping for them to be able to finish the battle in
- 4:29that day. And what we're told in Scripture
- 4:32is that God had the Son stand still.
- 4:35The only problem is we know the earth circles around the sun.
- 4:39So even if the sun, if you will, stood still, that would not do
- 4:43anything to the day or night cycle of the earth.
- 4:47So here you have God in Scripture acquiescing to human
- 4:52language or understanding of the time, if you will.
- 4:56God answered the request that Joshua actually had.
- 5:01He did not, He did not answer the request in the way that
- 5:06Joshua prayed for it. What a joy would have thought
- 5:10for us that sometimes we pray for something that may be
- 5:13impossible. We may be praying for something
- 5:15that would not actually help us and God does something better
- 5:20than what we prayed for. So that was spinning off of
- 5:29everything that we read in Scripture is true.
- 5:32It is right. It goes together.
- 5:35Scripture is authored ultimately by the Holy Spirit as he moved
- 5:41and and breathed in the various prophets and writers and authors
- 5:46and scribes and editors, so that what they produced was exactly
- 5:52what God wanted us to have in the very words that he wanted us
- 5:55to have them in. So let me read first a verse
- 6:03from Jude, which quotes from this person, Enoch, verse number
- 6:1414. So I went over the book of Jude.
- 6:18It was like 4 or five Tabernacle talk episodes.
- 6:20You can look at tbces.sex.com/jude if you want
- 6:25to hear more about this particular book.
- 6:28He says it was about these these ungodly people that Enoch in the
- 6:337th generation from Adam prophesied.
- 6:36Look, the Lord comes with 10s of thousands of His holy ones to
- 6:41execute judgement on all and to convict all the ungodly
- 6:45concerning all the ungodly acts that they have done in an
- 6:48ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh things ungodly sinners
- 6:53have said against him. So here Jude says Enoch the 7th
- 6:58from Adam prophesied about the Lord returning and conquering
- 7:03evil with 10s of thousands of his holy one.
- 7:08But as Jude mentions this prophecy from Enoch, we don't
- 7:12actually read this prophecy within the Old Testament.
- 7:16Instead, as we would read about Enoch's life, it only takes
- 7:21place over 3 verses in Genesis chapter 5.
- 7:25Enoch or sorry Genesis 521 says Enoch was 65 years old when he
- 7:31fathered Methuselah. After he fathered Methuselah,
- 7:34Enoch walked with God 300 years and fathered other sons and
- 7:38daughters. So Enoch's life lasted 365
- 7:43years. Enoch walked with God, then he
- 7:47was not there because God took him.
- 7:50So that's all we read about in Scripture, in the Old Testament
- 7:54about about Enoch. However, as God's people, the
- 8:02Jewish people, as they received the Old Testament from the
- 8:06prophets, with Moses writing much of what we have today as
- 8:12the Torah and then as you have the various prophets and scribes
- 8:16and editors in the thousand 1200 years after Moses as they put
- 8:25together the Old Testament, the Jewish people between when the
- 8:30Old Testament was completed and when Jesus came on the scene.
- 8:33You had people then as now that had questions about the Old
- 8:38Testament. They had questions about the
- 8:40Bible and as they even, but we're reading through the story
- 8:44of Enoch, as they read through Daniel, as they read through
- 8:49things and Numbers and Deuteronomy about the Nephilim
- 8:53and those sons of God and daughters of women offspring
- 9:01that we would read about in Genesis chapter 6.
- 9:03I'm going to read this verse really quickly.
- 9:08Genesis 61, when mankind began to multiply on the earth and
- 9:11daughters were born to them, the sons of God.
- 9:14That's in a phrase exclusively used of angelic or spiritual
- 9:19beings in the Old Testament. The sons of God saw that the
- 9:22daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any
- 9:25they chose as wives for themselves.
- 9:28And you always said, my spirit will not remain with mankind
- 9:31forever because they are corrupt.
- 9:33Their days will be 120 years. It's uncertain here whether God
- 9:37is declaring like, here's kind of the normal cap on people's
- 9:42lifespan now or if it's 120 years from right now.
- 9:46The flood will come. Verse #4 The Nephilim, the
- 9:50fallen ones, were on the earth both in those days and after
- 9:54work when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind who
- 9:57bore children to them. They were the powerful men of
- 10:00old, the famous men. So God's people today as well as
- 10:072000 years ago had questions about this particular portion of
- 10:10Scripture. And So what some of those people
- 10:14did was they wrote, I'm going to call it glorified fan fiction.
- 10:20It was in the style of the Old Testament.
- 10:24They wrote filling in details that Scripture did not give.
- 10:28But they said, here's what I think based on other things that
- 10:32I've read in Scripture, here's what I think happened.
- 10:36Here's who I think these sons of God were.
- 10:40And so the book of Enoch, what we most often refer to as that
- 10:45is First Enoch is a collection of five different books.
- 10:51And this was written after the Old Testament was compiled and
- 10:57completed. And we can see that even in
- 11:00First Enoch that it is heavily reliant on other portions of
- 11:06Scripture that it takes kind of the worldview or some of the
- 11:09puzzle pieces from and it makes its own unique different thing.
- 11:15Now let me be really clear on the onset of this.
- 11:18The Book of Enoch, by both the Jewish people and by the
- 11:23majority of the vast majority of Christians over the last 2000
- 11:27years has never been considered to be a part of the Canon, part
- 11:31of the inspired and errant infallible Word of God.
- 11:35If for no other reason, then in first Enoch, one of the angels
- 11:40tells Enoch that he is the Son of Man, that he is the Messiah,
- 11:46which certainly would go against what we would read in the New
- 11:50Testament, that Jesus is the Messiah.
- 11:52Jesus is the Son of Man spoken about in Daniel 7.
- 11:57The book of Enoch is. It's very sensationalist.
- 12:01It has 400 foot tall giants that eat all of the food on earth
- 12:08before the flood. And because they ate up all the
- 12:11food and they're still hungry, they start eating the people and
- 12:16just 1000 different curiosities. What happened, if you will, even
- 12:23as I was reading through first Enoch, if you want to look at a
- 12:26copy, by the way, the church, I'll say this.
- 12:30The church has never outlawed Enoch.
- 12:34It is not a quote UN quote like forbidden book.
- 12:36You can read it today. I have a copy of it right here
- 12:40in my Lexum English Septuagint, which is a collection into
- 12:45English of the writings of the Jews, mainly including the Old
- 12:54Testament translated into Greek from Hebrew, as well as some
- 12:59extra books that were not actually within that Greek Old
- 13:04Testament, but some other Greek works that were circulating
- 13:08around that time. So you can read through the book
- 13:11of First Enoch. I'd actually encourage you to
- 13:13it's, I'll use this phrase, it's kind of silly.
- 13:18It is not something that as you read through it, it does not
- 13:22read the same as actual Scripture.
- 13:26You go, oh, this is the kind of outlandish things, these are the
- 13:31kinds of outlandish things that atheists perhaps think that the
- 13:36Bible has within it. It is rambling.
- 13:42It is not it. It just does not meet the
- 13:46standard of scripture that any of the rest of God's word has
- 13:51it. It's unique.
- 13:53It can be enlightening to see what did Jewish people 200 years
- 13:58before Jesus, What were they thinking about Genesis.
- 14:02But it is a flawed book. It is a human book.
- 14:05And so you could, you know, read it alongside any other, you
- 14:10know, kind of fictional book. You can think about Ben Hur or
- 14:16what was the one, the Golden Bow or something like that was a
- 14:19children's book placed in like the time of Jesus that I read
- 14:23when I was in school and these books.
- 14:26It is enlightening to see what people thought.
- 14:28It is not enlightening to see what God thinks.
- 14:31I've attached 2 links into the show notes or the description
- 14:37for this. Episode 1 is a 50 minute podcast
- 14:41episode that Wesley Hough, who's a phenomenal apologetics guy, an
- 14:48episode that he did with Logos Bible Study and that will really
- 14:55show you well, what from a a deep, deep dive into this book
- 15:02that I don't want to take you guys on the full dive today.
- 15:06I've also included the Got Questions article that's from
- 15:10Dallas Theological Seminary and has a great like one page
- 15:14summary of what Enoch is, why it's not included in the Canon.
- 15:19But I hope that even just this little preview here on
- 15:23Tabernacle Talk would be able to give you a little bit of an idea
- 15:27about that. When you read through what's
- 15:32called like apocryphal pseudographical works, you are
- 15:37able to see God's Word is way better than anything that
- 15:42mankind could come up with. And so I want to encourage you
- 15:46spend time in God's Word. The one caution I'll give you
- 15:49is, as you read through, like apocryphal works, the temptation
- 15:54can be to fall into what Paul warned Timothy about there in
- 15:58the church at Ephesus of getting bogged down into genealogies,
- 16:03myths, and fables. Don't do that, but allow
- 16:07whatever you read to point you to Jesus and to the reality of
- 16:12godliness and of adopting the characteristics of our Lord.
- 16:16Thanks for tuning in and see you.
- 16:18Next episode we're going to be talking about Jesus and his
- 16:20incarnation, a little bit about the Trinity, and so really
- 16:23looking forward to that next Ask Anything episode with you guys.
