- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:02Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:04On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:10what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:13This fall, we're living in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:16and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:19This conversation was inspired by our series The Gospels.
- 0:23You can find more information about our church at
- 0:25fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:29conversation. Welcome to a special edition of
- 0:33the podcast, and I am joined here by.
- 0:38Elizabeth Boswell. And Rebecca Andrade?
- 0:42And myself, you should know me by now.
- 0:44We're here to talk a little bit about the young adults retreat
- 0:47that we went on this past weekend, since Scott has
- 0:50abandoned the ship to go to Kentucky on vacation.
- 0:54What a destination. I'm just saying that everybody
- 0:59at this table would love to be in Kentucky for various reasons
- 1:03right now. My reason is because Asbury is
- 1:07great and I had a wonderful time there, even though it was
- 1:09intense. Why would you want to be in
- 1:11Kentucky? I.
- 1:12Don't know. I thought you were going to tell
- 1:13me. Elizabeth.
- 1:15Oh. I'd have fun.
- 1:22That sounds horrible. She likes Kentucky just as much
- 1:27as everybody else does. Anyways, any who's, for those
- 1:32that have not talked with anyone that has been on a previous
- 1:36young adults retreat, can one of you share with us kind of what
- 1:40the retreat looks like? Because I think most people are
- 1:42familiar with, like, you go to a retreat center, organize buffet
- 1:47meals and then like, corporate worship with whoever's there.
- 1:51And then you get hotel rooms and whatnot or cabins, depending on,
- 1:56you know, the type of retreat center with all the amenities
- 2:00that are on the property. But what does ours look like?
- 2:03Well, it was Elizabeth's first time, so I guess maybe she might
- 2:06not know that. They always kind of look like
- 2:08this, but looks like us going up to the Poconos.
- 2:12New addition is being able to go out to eat beforehand.
- 2:15I feel like normally we just cruise all the way up there and
- 2:18then we do something, you know, a session the first evening,
- 2:24usually short because we're getting up there late and
- 2:26everybody's tired from the day. The next day we usually do 2
- 2:29sessions along with activities like swimming, gyming,
- 2:34pickleballing, eating yummy food.
- 2:38And then the next day we usually do one session in the morning
- 2:41and then come home. Out of this year, it seems very
- 2:45interesting since I've done now. This year we did a boys retreat
- 2:49up there, girls retreat for our youth and then the young adults
- 2:52retreat up there. Every single one has been unique
- 2:59even though the general flow has been the same and so I'm
- 3:04curious. Top few memories from the trip
- 3:08that you'd be willing to share and won't get me fired.
- 3:11My top three, I'll say from the weekend, were in no specific
- 3:18order. It's very specific.
- 3:20We're playing pickleball. Shout out to my All Star
- 3:25teammate Kim. We definitely did it there.
- 3:29When she said did it, she doesn't mean won the games.
- 3:32We won one. Just one out of like I can't
- 3:35remember how many if it. Was famous first time.
- 3:37Ever playing hey, hey, hey, we don't need to add any caveats to
- 3:41that. Getting to sleep in because my
- 3:45children were with my mother and father and the quiet time I had
- 3:50out in the woods. So she kind of stole mine.
- 3:53That's. OK, that's OK.
- 3:54Playing with Kim. And.
- 3:57Losing pickleball with Kim. No, I got to, I got to see
- 4:02Kirsten after a whole while. That was really fun.
- 4:06And Aaron, I haven't gotten to talk to them for a while.
- 4:09And it was just nice to be like not having something to do.
- 4:14Like I guess like being at college for the past couple of
- 4:16months, I've been like one thing after another and then coming
- 4:19home, I have one thing after another.
- 4:21So it's nice to just like sit and breathe.
- 4:24And so then I guess like, I really enjoyed my quiet time,
- 4:27like out in the woods, just like sitting and being with God and
- 4:29like, which is so which is so weird because like going to a
- 4:32Christian School, you would think you'd have time with God
- 4:35and it's like very hard to find like individual time with God.
- 4:37And so that was very nice. For sure Now for those that know
- 4:40Kirsten, you can ask her why she was absent for multiple hours on
- 4:44the retreat. We're.
- 4:46Not going to go into detail here on the podcast.
- 4:49I would say that would only be her second mistake on the
- 4:51retreat. That's what I'd say, yeah.
- 4:53Ask Kirsten about that if you know her.
- 4:56But since you both brought up going into the woods, can
- 5:00somebody explain or I'll explain the activity if you?
- 5:04Make it back great if you don't. Make sure you find Jesus while
- 5:08you're out there. Kim fell, though.
- 5:11She really? Thought she really did follow.
- 5:13She heard her knee, actually. I got I almost.
- 5:15Got hoping we don't get a lawsuit.
- 5:16I almost got tetanus on the girls retreat because there was
- 5:21a random metal spike sticking up out of the ground in the woods
- 5:24and it went through my shoe into my foot anyway.
- 5:28But it didn't happen to a student, so it's all that
- 5:31matters. It was me.
- 5:32Yeah. So the the activity was to go
- 5:36out into the woods behind the house.
- 5:38There's like 5 acres of woods with a nice little stream back
- 5:42there and a bunch of family of deer or doe foes and kind of
- 5:48spend time with God and prayer and scripture with him.
- 5:52And we would send everyone out one at a time so they just got
- 5:55that individual time with a comfortable chair so that they
- 5:58didn't have to focus on their hurting feces.
- 6:01Why did that time stand out to you?
- 6:03How did God meet you in that time?
- 6:04Well, we got to pick a scripture Jeremy had set out.
- 6:08I think it was like 3 or 4 different scriptures with loose
- 6:12like themes in them to pick. I believe I picked Psalm 19,
- 6:17which I think was just about like reflecting on God in
- 6:20nature. But it was nice because it was
- 6:23far enough out there there was nobody really around.
- 6:25So it was nice to read the scripture out loud like a couple
- 6:30times over. It was nice to pray and talk to
- 6:33God out loud without, I don't know, being self-conscious or
- 6:36worrying about like someone else listening or whatever.
- 6:40And the time went by, we did like 20 minute increments, and
- 6:46the time went by very quickly. Like I didn't even realize that
- 6:50I was at the end of my time. What happened, I don't know.
- 6:53It's just not something that I get to do often.
- 6:56So I think that's probably why. And living here in Collingswood,
- 7:00there's trees and grass, but it's not the same as being out
- 7:04to be where you can't be seen or you can't be heard.
- 7:08So just getting that like away time felt good to me.
- 7:12Oh, yeah. I guess it's just like I picked
- 7:16my scripture. I think it was Matthew 6.
- 7:18I want to say that was the one that I'm like, on anxiety,
- 7:23right? Yeah.
- 7:24So I guess it's just necessarily like, it's a very common
- 7:27scripture. I feel like you hear a lot kind
- 7:29of like, like God takes care of the sparrows and like, do not
- 7:32worry about tomorrow or tomorrow.
- 7:34Worry about stuff like that kind of whole general theme.
- 7:37But like, I don't know, I think just sitting there and
- 7:39marinating on it and reading it over and over and then it kind
- 7:41of gets in your head and then you actually start to like
- 7:43really like think about and believe it.
- 7:45I feel like so easy to just like read something once like, Oh
- 7:47yeah, I know this already. And it's kind of glaze over it.
- 7:50And then the fact that I was sitting out there for like 25
- 7:52minutes just like in my own thoughts helped with that.
- 7:55Because I think that when you don't have any distractions,
- 7:58they know like people screaming in the hall or like outside or
- 8:02no, like roommates in the room doing whatever while you're
- 8:06trying to like talk to God or something, it's a lot less
- 8:09distracting. So you can actually like, focus
- 8:11solely on God without anything else.
- 8:14I was going to say, I did find because I'm in the emotional
- 8:17healthy spirituality class and in that class, part of our daily
- 8:23devotional is 2 minutes of silence before and after the
- 8:28devotional every day. And I was surprised at how much
- 8:32easier it was to focus on being silent in the woods.
- 8:36I mean, there were parts where I was talking out loud, right?
- 8:38But when I was trying to be silent, it was a lot easier for
- 8:41me to focus being silent in the woods.
- 8:43And not like my head get clouded with stuff than it is when I'm
- 8:48like here at home in the house or, you know, on the front porch
- 8:53or whatever. So I don't know bonus of nature.
- 8:57I guess, yeah. And I even find in that setting
- 8:59that like your distractions, unless like someone's mowing
- 9:03their lawn somewhat nearby and it echoes, it's like the
- 9:06distractions also point you to God because you're seeing his
- 9:10creation and him reflected through his creation.
- 9:13And so, yeah, it reminds me, I forget some authors, someone
- 9:17wiser than me talked about how all of like, the sounds of
- 9:23nature are made by and for God. And so it's like his creation
- 9:29singing out to him and being surrounded by that is always
- 9:33wonderful. And relating to what Elizabeth
- 9:36said about like kind of breezing over a scripture that you feel
- 9:40familiar with and not letting it maybe fully sink in.
- 9:43I was having that that trouble today and in one of my textbooks
- 9:46because it was like, let me find a section for you to just
- 9:51visually see as a group since where they can see it.
- 9:55Look at this, like this is the the scripture quote that it's
- 9:59like the entire page. And I was like, I just taught on
- 10:02this last week or like in the past month, like do I really
- 10:06need to go back through these? And so I like had to be like,
- 10:08there's always value the speaker, the spirit can always
- 10:11speak and illuminate something new.
- 10:13Like to go through it instead of just for the sake of time to
- 10:16just breeze over the scripture. And so yeah, I, I would highly
- 10:22recommend maybe not overlooking certain passages just because we
- 10:25feel a sense of familiarity with them.
- 10:28How would you like to be intentional because we talked on
- 10:33the retreat about being intentional about creating space
- 10:38and time like that with God. How do you plan on doing that
- 10:43post retreat? That's a great question.
- 10:47That's why it's my job. Have me quit my job and we move
- 10:51out in the middle of the woods. No, I mean, I would like to move
- 10:54out in the middle of the woods, but I don't want you to quit
- 10:56your job. I leave you in the boys behind,
- 10:58and I live in the woods. Oh, how would that help me get
- 11:01quiet time? I didn't work out the details.
- 11:05No in mind. I mean, we'll probably have to
- 11:07be either getting up before the kids know you're going for a
- 11:11walk or on nights when Jeremy's home at bedtime, maybe trying to
- 11:15go for a walk before it's like super late and super dark out by
- 11:20myself because I don't really get a lot of alone time.
- 11:24So yeah, that's probably where I would have to carve it out.
- 11:28I thought it's going to and I hope to.
- 11:34Yeah, for me, I just have to be very intentional of like setting
- 11:37aside like a scheduled time every day because I just feel
- 11:40like, especially transitioning into college, it's been like,
- 11:43oh, I have to get up here and do this, but then I have work to do
- 11:46now. So then once I get that done,
- 11:48then I have to go straight to this.
- 11:50Otherwise that's skip eating this or doing XY or Z.
- 11:53So then I feel like it's like me having to like write down my
- 11:56whole schedule and then be like, OK, this time I'm doing this and
- 12:00then like actually build everything around it rather than
- 12:02like trying to cram it. And when I do have time and like
- 12:06I would say before classes, but realistically, I don't think
- 12:10that's going to happen. But I think probably best time
- 12:14would probably be when I'm like going for a run or like walking
- 12:17around like the campus, like further back at the campus where
- 12:20there's not many people. It's very pretty out there.
- 12:24I was going to go in my Delilah voice and be like and so
- 12:27listener. When are you going to find the
- 12:30time to go out and be alone with God?
- 12:35It's hard to do it in the suburbs surrounded by nature,
- 12:38but there are parks within 1520 minutes where you can not see a
- 12:44house while standing in the woods.
- 12:46So if God has allowed you the opportunity and the ability to
- 12:49go be there, take a nice chair, get comfy, spend some time with
- 12:54God, bring your Bible, not just your phone Bible, because then
- 12:57guess what? Phones can be distracting.
- 12:58That's the big surprising news here that you're only going to
- 13:01get on this podcast. We're all attached to these
- 13:04little cubes of useless information for the most part,
- 13:12but we'll convince ourselves it's for connection anyway.
- 13:16Do you have any parting words for the people?
- 13:20If you are a young adult and didn't go on the retreat, you
- 13:23missed out. Make sure you go next year.
- 13:25A lot of fun. And we went early enough in fall
- 13:29that we got to see all the fall leaves and we got the star gaze.
- 13:32Didn't even mention that. My favorite part of that was the
- 13:34pointer. Oh my gosh, that thing is
- 13:36awesome. So laser pointer St. straight in
- 13:39the sky in point of the star. Exactly.
- 13:42That's pretty much all I wanted to do after I saw it.
- 13:45But anyway, yeah, come to come to the next one.
- 13:48It's a good time. What Rebecca said.
