- 0:34you, the link is in the show notes.
- 0:37And on that note, let's dive into today's quote from Booker T
- 0:42Washington. He was born into slavery, freed
- 0:46at age 9, and went on to become an educator, author, and one of
- 0:51the most influential African American leaders of his time.
- 0:56He once said, if you want to lift yourself up, lift up
- 1:01someone else. This seems backwards at first.
- 1:06If I want to rise, shouldn't I focus on myself, on my own
- 1:10growth, my own achievement? Washington is saying no, the
- 1:17fastest way to lift yourself up is to lift someone else.
- 1:21And here's why. This works when you help someone
- 1:24else succeed. You develop the exact skills and
- 1:28mindset you need for your own success.
- 1:32Teaching someone makes you better at what you teach.
- 1:35Leading someone makes you a better leader, and encouraging
- 1:40someone strengthens your own resolve.
- 1:44But there's something deeper happening, too.
- 1:47When you focus entirely on yourself, on your own elevation,
- 1:52you become small and isolated, limited by your own perspective.
- 1:58When you focus on lifting others, you become part of
- 2:01something larger. You build relationships.
- 2:05You create goodwill. You develop a reputation as
- 2:09someone who helps rather than just takes.
- 2:13And here's what Washington knew from experience.
- 2:17People who lift others get lifted in return.
- 2:21Not always directly, and not always immediately, but
- 2:26consistently. The person you help today might
- 2:30open a door for you tomorrow, or they might tell someone who
- 2:34does, or they might teach someone who eventually helps
- 2:38you. You create an upward current
- 2:41that lifts everyone, including yourself.
- 2:45Washington lived this. Born into slavery with nothing,
- 2:50he lifted up thousands of students through the Tuskegee
- 2:53Institute, and in lifting them, he lifted himself to become one
- 2:58of the most respected educators in America.
- 3:01He didn't achieve that by only focusing on his own advancement,
- 3:06he achieved it by dedicating himself to lifting others.
- 3:10So here's the question. Who could you lift up today?
- 3:15Who could you help teach, encourage or support?
- 3:19Because if you want to lift yourself up, that fastest path
- 3:23is lifting someone else. Start lifting and watch what
- 3:27happens. That's it for today.
- 3:30I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 3:35tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:41with another daily quote.
