- 1:08OK. I'd like you to.
- 1:10Turn in your Bibles to First Samuel chapter 18.
- 1:16That's in the Old Testament. If you're unfamiliar with your
- 1:19Bible, in the beginning of the Bible there's an index and you
- 1:23can look up where First Samuel is and then it turns.
- 1:26To that page there so you just. Turn to First Samuel chapter 18,
- 1:31and that's where we're going to be tonight in a message that
- 1:34I've entitled David, a man after God.
- 1:37'S heart, the fugitive years. Now before.
- 1:42We have looked at David. In his formative.
- 1:45Years. Those are the years.
- 1:46From when he was born in the family of Jesse as the youngest
- 1:51son of eight or seven seven brothers and he was the 8th and
- 1:57he was kind of the runt of the family and and got the shade
- 2:01from all of his brothers like happens and all the way to when
- 2:07he was anointed by the prophet Samuel and that study is on the.
- 2:14Church App Calvary Church. App And then we did a second
- 2:20study and that was called David, a man after God's heart, the
- 2:25fighting years. And this is friend when he was
- 2:28anointed. By the Holy Spirit with that oil
- 2:31that. Samuel put on him all the.
- 2:33Way to the victory over Goliath and.
- 2:37Everything changed in his life. God put his spirit.
- 2:42Upon David and it just changed his life just in the same.
- 2:46Way as we as believers. When we put our faith in the
- 2:52Lord. Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit.
- 2:54Comes into our hearts, comes into the center.
- 2:57Of who we are. And we are a new creation.
- 3:00It's called being born again, and then there's something
- 3:04called the baptism with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:07Which is for service which is. Boldness and power and
- 3:12effectiveness in our service to the Lord.
- 3:14And to his. Body and that baptism with the
- 3:18Holy Spirit changes. US.
- 3:20And and give us a puts us on a new course, you might say.
- 3:24Just like it. Happened with David over here
- 3:28and you know there are times when things are going.
- 3:32So well. And then all of a sudden it's.
- 3:35Like the bottom drops out. And you're going, wait a minute,
- 3:39Everything was going so well. What?
- 3:40I didn't do anything wrong? And how come these?
- 3:44People are so upset. With me, I didn't do anything
- 3:47wrong and you see David now entering into.
- 3:51A third phase of his life called the fugitive years.
- 3:56It wasn't like God says. OK, here's what's.
- 3:58Going to happen first, here's what's going to happen second,
- 4:01here's what's going to happen third, no.
- 4:03It's like David just lived life. And everything was going
- 4:07swimmingly well until the King. Got jealous?
- 4:15And David couldn't control that. He had nothing to do with that.
- 4:21But. It was happening ever since.
- 4:26As we'll see ever. Since when they came home?
- 4:30For the victory over Goliath. The young ladies sang a top ten
- 4:36song. Saul has slain his thousands
- 4:40and. David his 10.
- 4:42Thousands. Now here's.
- 4:44Saul having fought. For so many years, protecting
- 4:48Israel. Man's man, the hero of it all.
- 4:51And here's this little guy. David getting all the credit.
- 4:54Of. Course he did.
- 4:55It's like. Goliath and Saul didn't.
- 4:58Jonathan didn't even risk himself.
- 5:00David's brothers didn't risk themselves.
- 5:02Nobody risk. Themselves for 40 days it says
- 5:07this. Stalemate went on 40 days over a
- 5:10month. Nobody.
- 5:11Dared risk their life. So here's young David as a teen.
- 5:16And by the way. Do you realize?
- 5:18That in our armed forces. There are still a lot.
- 5:21Of teenagers right now and God is fashioning them God is using
- 5:26them and so don't think that you know how would how would Saul
- 5:29give this power and. Authority over to a teenager.
- 5:33And an elder teenager, you might say.
- 5:36Well. Because God was.
- 5:39Behind it and moving the pieces around and David was just
- 5:44walking through life and he was doing what was set in front of
- 5:48him, doing it faithful as unto the Lord.
- 5:52And God was was. Moving things around and of
- 5:57course, Saul. Put out that whoever kills
- 6:00Goliath gets to be the. King's son-in-law marries my.
- 6:04Oldest daughter. And so David tried to reason
- 6:08what the soldiers look at. This is great.
- 6:10Not only that, but your whole family gets exempt from paying
- 6:13taxes in the Kingdom and still nobody would risk their.
- 6:17Life. So David just says.
- 6:22This guy, I'm on it, you know? Yeah, I can't believe it.
- 6:27And so he steps in, and of course you know the.
- 6:31Story with a. Slingshot not one of these.
- 6:35You know, this is one of the Hebrew slings.
- 6:37Slings. OK, they're.
- 6:39Harder really hits Goliath right on the forehead.
- 6:45He. Loses consciousness, falls on
- 6:46his. Face, David.
- 6:48Runs up to him. Now my question is where was the
- 6:51armor bearer for? Goliath, what happened, I mean.
- 6:54What? He just what He just?
- 6:55Like went and. Then took off.
- 6:58This is crazy. I have a little kid.
- 7:01Anyway, I I digress, sorry. These little things in between
- 7:06the stories, I'm going wait a minute, what happened to that?
- 7:09Guy, where did he go so. David enters the King's.
- 7:18Court, because God is. Putting them there on purpose.
- 7:24Do you ever think that the job you have right now is on purpose
- 7:30from the Lord and you go no, that's not that was Satan I the
- 7:35job I have is. No, that's not the Lord.
- 7:39I know the difference. Now wait a second.
- 7:42Hold on. Don't jump to conclusions.
- 7:45Yet if God is really in charge of your life, there's a reason.
- 7:51There's a purpose. Don't just write that off.
- 7:59Really don't write it off. David found himself in the
- 8:04King's court. He's playing his his.
- 8:09Little liar, they call. Them.
- 8:11They're a harp. He.
- 8:13Was pretty good at it, probably had 12.
- 8:16Strings and it. Soothed Saul's.
- 8:21Mad spirit, as an evil spirit from the Lord, was sent to
- 8:25drive. Saul out of his.
- 8:28Position which he kept fighting and so the king out of jealousy
- 8:36wanted to kill David somehow by using the Philistines.
- 8:43To kill David. And Saul's hand would be clean.
- 8:48So what I'm going to do is I'm going to.
- 8:49Read a little of each. Chapter we're not doing.
- 8:52I know it says chapter 18 to 26, but don't get scared.
- 8:56I'm not going to read every single.
- 8:58Verse. But there are certain.
- 9:00Points along the way that I want us to pay attention to.
- 9:06So in chapter 18 what I want us? To do is to.
- 9:10Look at starting in verse 12 and I'm going to read through to
- 9:14verse 30. Takes about 3 minutes or so.
- 9:17Chapter 18. Verses 12 to 30.
- 9:22Now Saul was. Afraid of David because the.
- 9:25Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul.
- 9:29Therefore Saul removed him from his presence and made him his
- 9:33captain over 1000, and he David went out and came in.
- 9:38Before the people and David. Behaved wisely in all his ways,
- 9:42and the Lord was with him, therefore, when Saul saw.
- 9:47That he behaved very wisely. He was afraid.
- 9:50Of him but all Israel and Judah. Loved David because he.
- 9:54Went out and came in. Before them, which is.
- 9:57A way of saying leading the armies out on battle and
- 10:00bringing them back. Kind of like a shepherd leading
- 10:03out his his sheep and then bringing him.
- 10:05Back into the fold. Verse 17.
- 10:08Then Saul. Said to David.
- 10:10Here is my older daughter Marib. I will give.
- 10:14Her to you as a wife only be. Valiant for me and fight the.
- 10:18Lord's battles for Saul. Thought, Let my hand not be
- 10:23against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.
- 10:27So David said to Saul. Who am I and what is my life or
- 10:31my father's family in Israel that?
- 10:33I should be. Son-in-law to the king, but it
- 10:37happened at the time when Mirab. Saul's daughter.
- 10:40Should have been given to David that she was given to Adriel.
- 10:44The Maholathite as a wife. Now Michael, Saul's daughter.
- 10:49Loved. David And they told Saul, and
- 10:52the thing pleased him. So Saul said, I will give her to
- 10:56him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the
- 11:00Philistines may be against him. Therefore, Saul.
- 11:03Said to David a second time. You shall be my son-in-law
- 11:07today. And Saul communicated or
- 11:11commanded his servants communicate with David.
- 11:14Secretly and say look the. King has the light in you, and
- 11:18all his servants love you now. Therefore become the King's
- 11:22son-in-law. So David's servant spoke those
- 11:25words in the hearing of David and.
- 11:28David says, Does it seem to you? To you.
- 11:30A light thing to be the King's son-in-law, seeing I am poor and
- 11:35lightly esteemed man. And the servants of Saul told
- 11:39him. Saying In this manner David
- 11:41spoke. Then, Saul said.
- 11:44Thus you shall say to David the king.
- 11:46Does not desire any dowry, but 100 foreskins of the Philistines
- 11:52to take vengeance on the King's enemies.
- 11:55But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the
- 11:59Philistines. So when his servants.
- 12:01Told David these words. It pleased David well to.
- 12:04Become the King's son-in-law now the days had not.
- 12:07Expired. Therefore, David arose.
- 12:10And went he and his men, and killed 200 men of the
- 12:14Philistines. And David brought their
- 12:16foreskins, and they gave them in full count to the king, that he
- 12:20might become the King's son-in-law.
- 12:22Then Saul gave him Michael. His daughter as wife.
- 12:27Then Saul saw and knew that the. Lord was with David.
- 12:32And that, Michael? Saul's daughter loved.
- 12:35Him and Saul was still more. Afraid of David?
- 12:39So Saul became David's enemy continually, then the Princess.
- 12:45Of the. Philistines went out to war and
- 12:47so it was whenever they went out that.
- 12:50David behaved. More wisely than all the
- 12:53servants of Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed.
- 13:00You know, Saul the king had a problem with projecting blame.
- 13:06We talked about. This in an earlier study he he
- 13:10didn't want to own up to his own.
- 13:12Failures. But he blamed everybody else for
- 13:15the problem that happened. Now maybe you are.
- 13:18Under a supervisor who does that and it's.
- 13:22Frustrating for you and you just want to leave and you just want
- 13:27or you just want to tell him or her off.
- 13:30But wait a minute. Ask.
- 13:33This question is God with me right now in this place of
- 13:39employment? Maybe you're maybe you're doing
- 13:43an Amazon Amazon job and it's just.
- 13:48It's really hard. But God is using the job to work
- 13:52on your life, work on your heart.
- 13:58There are things that have to be changed on the inside of me.
- 14:04I want everything changed on the inside.
- 14:06Out here, but God. Wants to do the work in me and
- 14:10he's probably using Amazon. I'm sorry.
- 14:13It's just it could be. UPS I think.
- 14:15It could be FedEx but but God. Is using that place of
- 14:19employment as a tool in his hand to.
- 14:22Shape your character if you're. Willing to let God do what He
- 14:26wants to do. Plus, you know you are getting
- 14:31some cash flow from your work, what we're talking about here
- 14:37tonight. Is how David dealt.
- 14:39With being a fugitive, being dealt with unfairly and justly
- 14:46and he became Public Enemy number one and he didn't do
- 14:50anything wrong. How do you?
- 14:52Deal with life. When everyone seems against you,
- 14:58I don't know if you've ever had it.
- 14:59When your whole family terms, it turns against you.
- 15:05When you have made a decision, I'm going to.
- 15:07Follow the Lord. And your family.
- 15:09Says if you do that, we're writing.
- 15:12You out of the will? Oh, yeah.
- 15:15I remember when I was down in Phoenix, I had a guy come to me
- 15:18and said my mom. Is is.
- 15:20Saying, you know, he, she's going to write me out of the
- 15:22will and I'm going bro. This.
- 15:25Listen, the Lord's your inheritance.
- 15:27It's not about money, and I know you're smarting over the whole
- 15:32thing that doesn't. It's just not fair.
- 15:33It's not right. What?
- 15:35What is God doing? But just let it go, the Lord.
- 15:39Is your inheritance, so it's. It's not about money.
- 15:45The Lord will take care of it. He promised to give you your
- 15:48daily portion, your daily bread. And so just.
- 15:54Don't box God in. Don't limit God on what he wants
- 15:58to do in the future because it's not according to your plan.
- 16:04Well, things didn't go, I mean. David was.
- 16:08I mean, God was really working at David's life and he was
- 16:11having victory after victory and and everybody was being blessed
- 16:15in the nation because the enemies were being pushed back
- 16:19and the oppression of the enemies.
- 16:21Was really. You know, the Philistines would
- 16:23come up to a an area where a man was farming and they would just
- 16:28take everything. And so having the Philistines
- 16:32pushed. Back is like.
- 16:33Victory. The only problem was the guy
- 16:40over you wants to kill me and it doesn't make sense.
- 16:47And David became Public Enemy #1.
- 16:50Take a look at. Chapter 19, verses 1 to 17.
- 16:54Just follow along with me and I'll read this now.
- 16:58Saul spoke to Jonathan, his son, and to all his servants.
- 17:01That they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son,
- 17:05delighted greatly in David. So, Jonathan told David, saying,
- 17:09My father Saul seeks. To kill you.
- 17:12Therefore, please be on your guard until morning and stay in
- 17:16a secret place and hide and I will go out and stand beside my.
- 17:20Father in the field where you are.
- 17:22I will speak with my father about you.
- 17:24Then what I observe I will tell you.
- 17:28Thus, Jonathan spoke well of David.
- 17:30To Saul, his father. And said to him, Let not the
- 17:33king sin against. His servant against David.
- 17:36Because he's not sinned against. You, because his works have been
- 17:40very good toward you, for he took his.
- 17:42Life in his hands and killed the philistines and the Lord
- 17:46brought. About a great deliverance for
- 17:47all Israel you. Saw it and.
- 17:50Rejoiced. Then why will you?
- 17:52Sin against innocent blood and kill David without cause.
- 17:57So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan and.
- 18:00Saul swore as the Lord. Lives.
- 18:03He shall not be killed. Then Jonathan called David and
- 18:07Jonathan told him all these things.
- 18:09So, Jonathan? Brought David to Seoul.
- 18:12And he was in his presence as in times past.
- 18:16Let's pause a moment. I don't know if I'd want to go
- 18:21back into the, you know, be around the king.
- 18:24If he's got such a a jealousy and wanting to kill me.
- 18:29I'm going, you know, I can do something different somewhere
- 18:31else. But David was just.
- 18:35Doing what's in front of him, thinking the.
- 18:37Best first. And having Jonathan, having
- 18:42someone like Jonathan to encourage him reminds me.
- 18:46Of what? We're supposed to be doing.
- 18:48With our brother or our. Sister, when things are
- 18:51difficult in the life of our. Brother or sister, it's not
- 18:56right for us to say. Man, that's tough.
- 18:59Hope it works out. Then walk away.
- 19:02Sometimes the Lord wants us to come right underneath and help
- 19:05out. If if your friend sprains their
- 19:10ankle and and you're you're walking down the street and they
- 19:14sprain their ankle on a curb, you come underneath them and you
- 19:17help them and to find help. I mean, that's practical.
- 19:22But sometimes when our brother. Or sister.
- 19:24Goes through a difficult time. It's like we'd I.
- 19:27Don't want to get involved? Attitude sneaks up and that's.
- 19:32Not what God's called us to. Do in the body of Christ we're
- 19:37to come alongside. We're to help.
- 19:39We're to. Bear one another's burdens.
- 19:42It doesn't mean we got to know everything about everybody.
- 19:45But there's. Going to be situations when
- 19:47God's going to be calling you to be a Jonathan to a David and
- 19:52don't don't pull back from that. David really needed Jonathan at
- 19:57this point because he didn't have anybody else.
- 20:02So continue on here, verse 8. And there was war again, and
- 20:08David went out and fought with the Philistines, and struck them
- 20:11with a mighty blow, and they fled from him.
- 20:14Now the distressing Spirit from the Lord came upon Saul.
- 20:18As he sat in his house with his. Spear in his hand, and David was
- 20:22playing music with his hand. Then Saul sought to pin.
- 20:26David to the wall with his spear, but he slipped.
- 20:30Away from Saul's presence. And he'd Saul drove the spear
- 20:35into the wall. So David fled and escaped that
- 20:38night. Notice what David did not do.
- 20:42He didn't take the spear. Pull it out of the.
- 20:44Wall and say and say I'm OK, you're going to we're.
- 20:47Going to do this. Together.
- 20:49No, He. Didn't throw the spear.
- 20:51Back he just ducked and he left. Verse 11 Saul also sent
- 21:00messengers to David's house to watch him and to kill him in the
- 21:04morning. And Michael, David's wife told
- 21:08him saying, if you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow
- 21:10you'll be killed. So Michael let David down
- 21:14through a window and he fled and and escaped.
- 21:17And Michael took an image which is like a statue and laid it in
- 21:22the bed and put a cover. Of goat's hair for his head and
- 21:25covered it with clothes. So when Sauls sent messengers to
- 21:29take. David, she said.
- 21:31He is sick. Then Sauls sent the messengers
- 21:35back to David saying bring him up to me in the bed that I may
- 21:38kill him. And when the messengers had come
- 21:41in, there was the image in the. Bed with a cover of goats hair
- 21:44for his head. Then Sauls said to Michael.
- 21:47Why have you? Deceived me like this and sent
- 21:50my enemy away. So that he has escaped.
- 21:54And Michael answered Saul, he said to me, let me.
- 21:57Go Why should I kill? You, I mean, what a mess, what a
- 22:02mess. There are some lessons here.
- 22:07About how David deals with difficult life situations.
- 22:14When we do pre marriage counseling there is one area we
- 22:19talk about called conflict resolutions.
- 22:23How do you deal with? Conflicts.
- 22:28Unfortunately, families don't. Disciple their kids.
- 22:31On how to deal with conflicts, our family was one that.
- 22:37We did teach the kids. How to deal with conflicts
- 22:41because they were every single week and we'd have to have a
- 22:45family meeting on Sunday night. Get everybody together.
- 22:50Micah's laughing over here. Get.
- 22:52Everybody together and OK, we're going to work out the conflicts
- 22:56because when you have three brothers and the youngest.
- 22:59Is 6. Years younger than the middle 1.
- 23:02You have conflicts. And so it was.
- 23:06OK, here is how we do it. What?
- 23:09What is your grievance? Why are?
- 23:11You so upset with your brother. Well, you know, he went in,
- 23:15broke my models and didn't even ask.
- 23:17And that's not right. It's not fair and I just want to
- 23:21hit him, you know, and, and so. We go, OK, well, Chris.
- 23:26You're the little one. Why did you go into his room?
- 23:29Well, I just want to see what. Was there?
- 23:31I said whose room is? It, well, it's.
- 23:33His room. It's not your room, is it,
- 23:35Chris? No, it's not my room.
- 23:37So. In other words, you trespassed,
- 23:40yet you crossed the line. This is how it works in our
- 23:42house. You have to respect everybody's
- 23:44property, so you you sinned against your brother.
- 23:48You, you, you know, you realize that and you have to own it.
- 23:52So, Chris, here's what you're going to do.
- 23:54You need to go to your brother right now because we're in the
- 23:56same room and you need to ask his forgiveness.
- 24:00Yeah, but it's not fair. How come I don't get a model?
- 24:02No, you need to just own it here.
- 24:04And you need to. Ask his forgiveness.
- 24:07Oh, OK. Well, yeah, well, forgive me for
- 24:11breaking your model. And then then I have to tell
- 24:15them. OK, now you.
- 24:16Have to say I forgive you that this is part of.
- 24:19Resolving the conflict, but it was like every week but gang as
- 24:30they. Grew up all the sudden.
- 24:34That pattern I watched happening with them as a pastor in
- 24:41Phoenix. There was a guy that called our
- 24:44house. From our church and I wasn't
- 24:48home and Jesse, our second son, answered the phone.
- 24:52Because in those days. My number was in the phone book.
- 24:55Do you remember phone books? You know they're.
- 24:56Like this thick. OK, my my my number was in the
- 25:00phone book. And so this guy.
- 25:02From the congregation called her house and he had a gun to his
- 25:06head and Jesse talked him down using the same patterns of
- 25:15conflict resolution and just ministered to him and I didn't
- 25:21find out about. That until the guy told.
- 25:25Me on Sunday. That.
- 25:28This son of yours talked me down off the ledge and and listen,
- 25:37you've. Got to.
- 25:38Really just know that your efforts with your children are
- 25:43for later on and and it's important to teach them.
- 25:48How about conflict resolution? Because if you don't, then it's.
- 25:54Either like fight or flight. Or freeze when a conflict.
- 25:58Happens, but this discipleship is so.
- 26:02Important here is David thinking the best first, wanting to do
- 26:10what's? Right.
- 26:12And he steps back. Into it and he almost gets shish
- 26:16kabob by the king and he's just playing his harp.
- 26:24Verse 18 So David fled and escaped and went to Samuel at
- 26:29Rama and told them all that Saul had done to him.
- 26:32And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naoth.
- 26:36Now it was told Saul saying take note David is at Naoth and Rama.
- 26:41Then Saul sent messengers. To take David.
- 26:44And when they saw the. Group of prophets.
- 26:46Prophesying and Samuel standing as leader over them.
- 26:49The Spirit of God came on the messengers of Saul and they also
- 26:53prophesied. And when Saul was told, he sent
- 26:56other messengers and they prophesied likewise.
- 26:59Then Saul sent messengers again the third time and they
- 27:02prophesied also. Then he also went to Rama and
- 27:05came to the great. Well, that is at Siku.
- 27:08So we asked and said, where are Samuel and David?
- 27:11And someone said indeed they are in Naoth and Rama.
- 27:15So he went there to Naoth and Rama.
- 27:17Then the Spirit of God came upon him also and he went on and
- 27:21prophesied until he came to Naoth and Rama.
- 27:24And he kept pushing, pushing, pushing and and like the Lord
- 27:28was pushing down, pushing down on Saul to humble him.
- 27:33And he also stripped. Off his clothes and prophesied
- 27:36before Samuel unlike manner and lay down naked all that day.
- 27:41I mean this guy's kind of bizarre.
- 27:43I mean that things are really just falling apart in in his
- 27:46life now when you look at the the next couple of chapters,
- 27:53which we're not going to read and I want you.
- 27:56To read it because we're talking about how David sought to
- 27:59reconcile. It's easy to want.
- 28:03To run, but there are. Times when God has called us to
- 28:08attempt to reconcile when someone over you and.
- 28:12Authority has you do. Something that you know is wrong
- 28:18and sin, rather than saying I'm not doing that I'm out of.
- 28:23Here how about? This approach make an appeal
- 28:32saying you know boss, and we're not talking undercover.
- 28:36Boss, we're just. Talking about, you know, your
- 28:38your authority. I know.
- 28:40That. By the end of the year, you have
- 28:44a concern on how things look. To the stockholders, but the
- 28:50direction. That you're going is going to
- 28:53lead to some something probably illegal and so.
- 28:59What I would like to present to you is how.
- 29:01We can get to the same end and do it a different way, which
- 29:07doesn't violate your conscience. And that's called an appeal.
- 29:14It doesn't mean they'll. Take it.
- 29:15But at least that's the first step.
- 29:17To make an appeal. And that's what David does here
- 29:21in chapters. 20 and 21 trying to make an appeal.
- 29:25To Saul to. Reason with him it doesn't work
- 29:32but it was worth trying because then your conscience is clear
- 29:38and you go you know I've done everything I can within my power
- 29:43and by the way, sometimes we. Just are tired of fighting.
- 29:50With it and we we just want to let him have.
- 29:52It but that's that's. Not going to help anything.
- 29:57Romans chapter 12, verses 17 to 21.
- 30:01Paul writes Repay. No one evil for evil.
- 30:07Have regard for good. Things in the sight of all men.
- 30:12If it is possible, as much as depends on you, Live peaceably
- 30:16with all men, beloved, Do not avenge yourselves, but rather
- 30:22give place to. Wrath for it is.
- 30:24Written vengeance is mine. I.
- 30:27Will repay, says the. Lord, do you know?
- 30:31That most of David's. Psalms came out of his time as a
- 30:35refugee on the run, and we're going to talk about that in a
- 30:42minute. The number of Psalms that came
- 30:44out of his refugee years. And, you know, sometimes when
- 30:50you're in the middle. Of it all.
- 30:53You can panic and then make the wrong decision completely, and
- 30:58that's what happened. Excuse me?
- 31:00That's what happened in verse or in chapter 21.
- 31:05Saul tries to hide. In the Philistine territory and
- 31:08and it gets. So weird he's got to.
- 31:10Pretend to be crazy. So they'll just.
- 31:13You know, saying he's worthless. And he escapes because he played
- 31:18being crazy. I mean, I don't think that was a
- 31:22good. Decision really, because.
- 31:25Now there's other men following him.
- 31:27Do you realize that when sometimes when you make a bad
- 31:29decision, other people are affected by it?
- 31:33Your family, the people that look.
- 31:36Up to you. If you're in a leadership
- 31:39position when you when you just do a moment of folly, do you
- 31:43know how it impacts everyone? That looks.
- 31:46To you and honor I I've just watched it over the years, some
- 31:52of my colleagues making some of the worst decisions in the world
- 31:55and and the effect upon hundreds of people in the church,
- 32:00sometimes even like destroying their faith in a sense of like,
- 32:05you know, how could they do that?
- 32:06What am I even doing here and it stumbles them.
- 32:12May the Lord have mercy when we make those kind of choices, but
- 32:18it's not hopeless because God already knew you would do
- 32:23something like that, and He's already got a plan to bring you
- 32:27out of the pit and help you if you'll look to him.
- 32:34Part 2 of tonight's message is called finding refuge only in
- 32:38the Lord, and that's for Samuel 22 to 26 and these.
- 32:45Years are real hard. Most Bible commentators say that
- 32:48it's almost around a decade of time.
- 32:51So in other words, the David's 20s were ruined by a king who.
- 32:57Was jealous by a. King, who sent out a SWAT team
- 33:01to try to find him in the mountains of Judah and to make
- 33:04matters. Worse people were.
- 33:07Defaulting to David, more and more soldiers were coming to
- 33:10David. How do you hide 400 men in a
- 33:13cave? What kind of cave is that?
- 33:16I mean. These were there's caves.
- 33:18All over the region of of there in the wilderness.
- 33:21Of Judah, but. I mean, it's becoming more and
- 33:23more difficult. And so I want you to turn to
- 33:27Chapter 22 of First Samuel, and I want you to look.
- 33:31Closely at the 1st 5 verses. This section is called David's
- 33:37Cave. All right.
- 33:39Here's what it says there. David therefore departed from
- 33:43there and and. Escaped to The Cave of.
- 33:45Abdulam so when his brothers and all.
- 33:49His father's house heard it. They went.
- 33:51Down there to him and everyone who was in distress, everyone
- 33:56who was in debt and everyone who was discontented gathered to
- 34:01him. So he became a captain over them
- 34:05and there were about 400 men with him.
- 34:09When I first read this I thought, well this is.
- 34:11Like Hell's Angels. I mean, you know this.
- 34:13Is this is quite a group that's all gathered together All right,
- 34:18Verse 3. Then David went from there to
- 34:20Mizpah of Moab, and he said to the king of Moab, please let my
- 34:25father and mother come here with you till I know.
- 34:27What God will do? For me.
- 34:30So he brought him before the king of Moab, and they dwelt
- 34:33with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.
- 34:38Now the prophet Gad said that David do not stay in the
- 34:41stronghold and depart and go back to the land of Judah.
- 34:44So David departed and went into. The Forest of Harith.
- 34:49You know, The Cave agile limits believed is an area east of
- 34:53Bethlehem, between Bethlehem and the and the Dead Sea.
- 34:57There's tons of of caves there in the on those eastern edge of
- 35:01those. And so it's becoming more and
- 35:03more. Difficult for David to hide.
- 35:07And it says here, even his family showed up.
- 35:12Why did they show up? Because Saul.
- 35:16Saw the family as guilty by association.
- 35:21Guilty by association. I don't know if you've ever been
- 35:25blamed of something that you never did.
- 35:29Because you were. Around that person.
- 35:32Or at that place, guilty by association.
- 35:36People think the worst first. Well, here David's family was
- 35:41now in trouble. And so here is Jesse.
- 35:47And his mom, who counted David as a lightweight.
- 35:53But David didn't hold any resentment in his.
- 35:55Heart but protected them please if there are.
- 36:06Issues in your heart regarding how you were raised by your
- 36:12parents. Don't let the enemy use.
- 36:16That. To block your heart because
- 36:20God's not done. It was several years before this
- 36:27could be worked. Out When you allow bitterness
- 36:34and resentment to lock in on your heart, against your parents
- 36:41or against your children, it's like drinking poison and
- 36:46expecting the other person to die.
- 36:49The only. Person that gets hurt is.
- 36:51You. And it blocks you from what the
- 36:56Lord wants to do in the future. In reconciliation, yes it is.
- 37:01Possible. I'm not saying it's a guarantee.
- 37:05But it is possible that the Lord has.
- 37:07Been hearing your? Prayers all these years.
- 37:10And he's working on a reconciliation method.
- 37:15But don't block your heart. You may end up being in a
- 37:20situation like David where he takes his parents and protects
- 37:24them, even though he was dealt with dishonorably by his
- 37:29parents. And then notice the text here.
- 37:36There's an emphasis, emphasis. That the Holy Spirit gives in
- 37:39this text. In verse 2, everyone who was in
- 37:43distress, everyone who was in debt, everyone who was
- 37:49discontented. Gathered to David.
- 37:53Normally you don't see. That repetition, but it's there.
- 37:57For emphasis this thing of everyone.
- 38:00Is that this is all across the board things.
- 38:03Are falling apart in people. 'S lives under the reign of
- 38:07this. King and God brought them to
- 38:11David. You know this.
- 38:18This really could describe your. Current life situation here
- 38:22tonight. Or those of you.
- 38:23Watching online, you are in distress, which means being an
- 38:30anguish, in straits, being hedged in with no.
- 38:34Way out distress. Or you might be in debt over
- 38:39your head. Maybe you've made some unwise
- 38:42financial choices and have put you in deeply in debt with no
- 38:45way out. Or maybe you're discontented,
- 38:49frustrated and in bitterness of soul, and because no matter how
- 38:53hard you've tried to make things right, they've only gotten
- 38:56worse. And discontented is the meaning
- 38:58of that word. So if if when you're in one of
- 39:04these three distressed debt or discontentment, it's so easy to
- 39:08blame others. For causing these life
- 39:11experiences. But I have learned in my own.
- 39:14Life that God was. Overseeing it and he was using
- 39:21it to work in me when I was working selling insurance in
- 39:277879 and 80. The insurance company really
- 39:33ripped me off big time and what they wouldn't correct the matter
- 39:38even as the. Proof was was put there.
- 39:41And it made. Our life very difficult,
- 39:45especially. In 1980 and we went to from hand
- 39:50to mouth financially put a pressure on our marriage and our
- 39:55family. But then looking back on it.
- 40:02God could have changed all that. But he used it.
- 40:07He used it in my life. He used it in my.
- 40:10Wife's life, he showed through it all that he is a God that.
- 40:15Can take care of us moment by moment when it's needed, not
- 40:20before it's needed. And it we didn't get out of that
- 40:25no matter how hard we tried. For a year.
- 40:30And finally, when you just go, Lord, there's nothing I can do.
- 40:39And then you, you just say. But I, I will.
- 40:42Have to trust you. I have to trust you.
- 40:45Your word is. True, and I don't understand you
- 40:48can't get. Blood out of a.
- 40:49Rock and all that. Come on.
- 40:51I mean. Gee, OK, I just trust you.
- 40:55I trust you. I trust you.
- 40:56And. Then you go to sleep and then
- 40:59you wake up and you go. I'm still a mess I.
- 41:04Trust the Lord. And I look back on it and it was
- 41:09God showing us how he. Could take care of us.
- 41:16Day by day, even though we brought right up to the end and
- 41:21it. Looked like it was all.
- 41:22Going to fall apart and he'd come through just enough and
- 41:27that set a heart knowledge in. Both of us that God.
- 41:31Can take care of us no matter. How bad it gets, God.
- 41:36Is in charge of those things. He's in charge of the little
- 41:38things. So discontented, in debt, in
- 41:46distress. You know, our sin brings those
- 41:50things on us as well. Our sin brings us into distress,
- 41:55into anguish, anguish into straits.
- 41:58Our sin brings us into debt. Way over our heads before.
- 42:01God with no way out of his wrath.
- 42:04Our sin brings us into bitterness of soul.
- 42:07No life, no hope, but God brings us to the Son of David.
- 42:12Jesus and we go to David's cave. You might say or just being
- 42:18Jesus disciples we come. With all of our mess.
- 42:22We come as we are and David didn't say get out of here
- 42:27because you're a danger to me, David said.
- 42:31Come on in. And Jesus says to us.
- 42:35Come on in. And I want to.
- 42:44I want. To have you hear the son of
- 42:46David. Talk to you in Matthew 1128 and
- 42:53he says here come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden,
- 43:00and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn
- 43:08from me, for I'm gentle and lowly in heart, and you will
- 43:12find. Rest for your souls.
- 43:15For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
- 43:28Why do we fight with? That.
- 43:31Well, that's just for. Salvation.
- 43:33No, no, it's for right now. Jesus is still your chief
- 43:38Shepherd. And he's telling you, come to
- 43:44me. Come to me in The Cave.
- 43:49You're in distress. You're in debt.
- 43:53You're discontented. Come to me.
- 43:57I'll be your captain. Do you know that when David was
- 44:03going through all those trials in his fugitive?
- 44:05Years he was also. Showing His men how to deal with
- 44:10things. And so God is not just working
- 44:15on you, He's working around you. And looking back in an earlier
- 44:22scripture in my notes, 2nd Corinthians 1 verses 3 and 4,
- 44:27blessed be the God and Father. Of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
- 44:31Father of mercies. And the God of all comfort, who
- 44:34comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able
- 44:40to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with
- 44:45which we ourselves are comforted by.
- 44:48God, do you ever? Do you ever?
- 44:51Come to the realization that sometimes the trials you're
- 44:55going through aren't even for you.
- 44:58They're for somebody else and you're and God wants you to take
- 45:01the comfort he gives to you and he wants you to take it and pass
- 45:07it along. This is what I've learned
- 45:10through my tribulation, through my.
- 45:12Trial here is how God. Spoke to me, ministered to me
- 45:17and you're in such deep weeds right now you need.
- 45:21The hope that only. Comes in Jesus and I know He can
- 45:25do it. So you're taking the same
- 45:26comfort like is mentioned there in 2nd Corinthians 1 and you're
- 45:30passing it along. It's not just about.
- 45:34You it's about how God. Wants to use you in your
- 45:37generation. I'm not sure if you're willing.
- 45:47To go to Jesus with your distress.
- 45:51You're. Trying to work it out yourself.
- 45:53And the Lord is saying come to me, Just come to me.
- 45:58I'm not going to put a lasso around you and yank you in here.
- 46:02You come to me. Of your own free will, the way
- 46:06you are. What?
- 46:08The mess you're in? Yeah, you're a hot mess.
- 46:13But I. I can deal with that.
- 46:17God meets us where we are but doesn't leave us there.
- 46:22And his work is from the inside out.
- 46:30There's so much to learn here. About David's life, read through
- 46:37this. Section on your own and just ask
- 46:40the. Lord, how did David?
- 46:42Deal with things and then look up some psalms.
- 46:48Those of you that have. A pen or pencil.
- 46:51Here are the Psalms that came out of David's fugitive years.
- 46:55Psalm 34. Psalm 52.
- 47:01Psalm 54. Psalm 56.
- 47:06Psalm 57. Psalm 59.
- 47:11Psalm 63. Psalm One, 43142.
- 47:16Rather, and there are others. Which aren't specifically
- 47:20mentioned that he was in his fugitive.
- 47:23Years that talk about the. Betrayal and the difficulty and
- 47:26the hardship. As he talks to the Lord about
- 47:28it, that could well have. Been written during those
- 47:31fugitive years and do you? Do you see what's?
- 47:35Happening. David is taking the comfort that
- 47:37he received from the Lord and his passing it on to us through
- 47:41the Psalms. So tonight in closing, I I just
- 47:47want. To pray for you.
- 47:51If you are in. One of these three categories.
- 47:54Right now you are in distress, you are in debt and you're
- 48:04discontented and we just want to pray for you don't need to know
- 48:09that. The particulars but.
- 48:11We do need to know who you. Are so we can pray for you so if
- 48:14you. If you're in those three
- 48:16categories, one of those 3 categories, could you just
- 48:18stand? So we can pray.
- 48:20For you? Yeah, just go ahead.
- 48:23All right. Anyone else?
- 48:31It's real life stuff. Now, those of you that are
- 48:37around these that are standing, could you go over to them, put
- 48:41your hand on their shoulder and let's pray for them right now,
- 48:47OK? Don't let anybody standing by.
- 48:48Themselves. Our.
- 48:58Father in heaven, we don't know what's going on in the.
- 49:00Lives of these that have. Stood before you and before.
- 49:03Us, but they. Really need your healing touch.
- 49:12They need the hope that's only found in Jesus.
- 49:16Christ, we ask God that. You'd calm the storm in their
- 49:22heart over the middle of their. Life situation so they.
- 49:28Can hear your voice and hear your next steps.
- 49:34Remind them, Lord, of your promises to them, Your kindness,
- 49:41your mercy, your compassion, your understanding, Your wisdom,
- 49:49Your power, your. Love and Father God, we.
- 49:58Want you to mark this. Day, September 10th as a.
- 50:03Change point in these. People's lives.
- 50:07That you would begin to give them the next most important
- 50:10step to bring them out of this situation to your glory.
- 50:17Since you're the Creator, you can create whatever is needed.
- 50:21But just do it your. Way and let what you.
- 50:28Love what let what the Lord said.
- 50:29In Matthew Chapter 11 come true in their life in Jesus name,
- 50:37Amen. We pray that you've been
- 50:39encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
