- 0:00Aloha. Sunday morning in Hawaiʻi. I'm Mele with what's happening across the islands today.
- 1:57Today and tomorrow stay warm — mid-to-upper 80s with sticky humidity and moderate trade winds. Windward areas of the Big Island and Maui will catch showers and heavy rain through Monday morning, so plan water activities on the leeward and south-facing coasts instead. The Big Island's slopes have a slim chance of an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon. Leeward shores stay mostly dry.
- 2:17Surf is moderate on Oʻahu's south shore at 4.1 feet and Kauaʻi at 4.5 feet — watch for shore break and rip currents if you're heading to unprotected beaches. Maui's south shore is small at 2.8 feet, comfortable for swimmers. The Big Island is glassy and calm at 1.4 feet — good snorkeling conditions before things shift later in the week.
- 2:33Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is operating with some trail closures. Sulfur Banks Trail, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and Kahuku Unit Roads are closed due to hazardous conditions and volcanic ash. The park remains open — just avoid those specific routes. The advisory level stays yellow across the state.
- 2:48A tropical disturbance 1,000 miles southeast of the islands is likely to develop into a tropical cyclone by mid-week and track toward Hawaiʻi, potentially bringing significant impacts by Thursday or Friday. This is the time to finalize your hurricane preparedness plan. Our new piece on Hawaiʻi's island tourism plans identifies places under strain and breaks down what the new visitor guidelines mean for parking, access, and where to go when your first choice is crowded — it's worth reviewing as you plan around this week's conditions.
- 3:15Tuesday through Thursday bring a drier pattern with fewer showers and clearer skies. South-shore surf rises to advisory levels late Wednesday and stays elevated through Friday. Minor coastal flooding is possible at high tides through Tuesday.
