- 0:31Welcome back, listeners to Sandman Stories Presents, a
- 0:34folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:36story. I'm your host, Dustin.
- 0:40Today we are back in the book of Azorian folk tales written down
- 0:43by Elsie Spicer Eels. In this story, the king wants to
- 0:47listen to the townsfolk's words because he has bored senseless.
- 0:51If you listen to last week's story, you'll hear echoes of the
- 0:54same story from Armenia. OK, let's begin.
- 0:59The listening king. The story of the trouble which
- 1:02came to him. Once Upon a time there lived a
- 1:06king who like to walk in disguise about the streets of
- 1:09the city, listening at people's doors.
- 1:12It was, in fact, his favorite amusement.
- 1:15Other kings of the land have been fond of war, or hunting, or
- 1:18fishing or games, but there are never before been one who like
- 1:21to listen at doors. For this reason he was called
- 1:25the Listening King. It is the greatest fun I have.
- 1:30He often said to his counsellors, being a king would
- 1:33be a stupid life if one didn't have some diversion.
- 1:37Be careful that it does not get you in trouble, said the wise
- 1:39men. We have often heard that
- 1:41listening to other people's secrets is a dangerous practice.
- 1:46I've had nothing but pleasure from it anyway, the king would
- 1:48reply. Then he would add, so far at
- 1:52least. Sometimes he would take a friend
- 1:55or two with him, and sometimes he would go alone.
- 1:59The habit of listening at doors became more and more a favorite
- 2:02one to him as the months and years passed.
- 2:06Now in that city there lived a man of humble station who had
- 2:09three pretty daughters. One evening the king passed his
- 2:13house and stopped to listen at the door.
- 2:16What would you like to marry? One of the girls was asking.
- 2:19It happened to be the youngest one.
- 2:22I'd like to marry the royal Baker, said the eldest sister.
- 2:25Why, asked the youngest one? So that I might always eat fresh
- 2:29bread, was the reply. Who would you like to marry?
- 2:33Said the youngest sister to the middle one.
- 2:36I'd like to marry the royal meat cook, so that I might always eat
- 2:38meat roasted just for a turn, was her answer.
- 2:43Who would you like to marry as the eldest sister and the middle
- 2:46sister together? I'd like to marry the listening
- 2:49king himself, was the reply which their youngest sister
- 2:52made. Silly, Silly, cried the two
- 2:55sisters, Perhaps we have a chance of getting our wishes.
- 2:58But what chance have you if one wishes for nothing splendid?
- 3:02One never gets anything splendid, replied the youngest
- 3:05sister with a blush which made her look very charming to the
- 3:08king as he peeped through the keyhole.
- 3:11The king went away with a shrewd smile upon his face.
- 3:14The next day he sent for the three sisters to come to the
- 3:16palace. They were very much frightened.
- 3:20Well, said the king to the eldest daughter.
- 3:23Do you want to marry the royal Baker?
- 3:25Yes, your majesty, she replied. I have no objections.
- 3:29The king turned to her sister. How is it with you?
- 3:33He asked. What do you say to marrying the
- 3:35royal meat cook? I'll be most happy to marry him,
- 3:38your majesty, she answered. The youngest girl was blushing
- 3:42like a rose and her heart was thumping so much that she could
- 3:45scarcely breathe. The King smiled as he noticed
- 3:49her fair head bowed upon her breast.
- 3:52Would you like to marry the listening King?
- 3:54He asked to her gently. Yes, your Majesty, she responded
- 3:59so low that the king could very hardly hear her.
- 4:02Very well, said the king, I'll have all these weddings
- 4:05celebrated at once. Thus it happened that the two
- 4:09eldest sisters got their wishes and married the royal Baker and
- 4:12the royal meat cook, while the youngest one wedded the
- 4:15listening king himself. The others were very angry at
- 4:18her luck, and their hearts were filled with envy.
- 4:22Why didn't we wish to be Queens, or at least princesses?
- 4:24One asked to the other. It would have been just as easy
- 4:27to have our wishes granted. Why didn't we?
- 4:31Why didn't we? How stupid we are.
- 4:33Cried the other. They passed the time and
- 4:37plotting against their younger sister, the Queen.
- 4:41A year flew by and twin sons were born to the royal pair.
- 4:45They had gold stars on their foreheads.
- 4:47The whole Kingdom was filled with rejoicing.
- 4:50As for the listening king, he was so happy that he forgot to
- 4:53listen at people's doors. The only people in the whole
- 4:57country who are not happy were the two jealous sisters.
- 5:02They stole the tiny babies out of the palace and threw them
- 5:05into the river. Trouble has at last come to our
- 5:08listening king, said the wise men.
- 5:10When the lost was discovered, the basket in which the twins
- 5:14have been placed floated away down the stream.
- 5:17It was found by the Miller. What have we here?
- 5:20He asked his wife together as they removed the cover to the
- 5:22basket. I guess it is something good to
- 5:26eat, said his wife. What do you think it is?
- 5:30I guess it is a poor little puppy which someone wanted to
- 5:32drown, replied the Miller. Then they took the cover off the
- 5:36basket. The two babies opened their eyes
- 5:39and smiled. Just then the Miller and his
- 5:42wife were the most surprised people in the whole country and
- 5:45also the happiest ones. What beautiful children, cried
- 5:49the Miller. Let's keep them, cried his wife.
- 5:53Of course we'll keep them, replied the Miller.
- 5:55The good God himself must have sent them to us to answer our
- 5:57prayers. Just then, the Miller's wife
- 6:01noticed the golden stars upon their foreheads.
- 6:04What does that mean, she asked. I don't know, answered her
- 6:08husband as he examined them carefully.
- 6:11Perhaps it is just a sign that they are truly the gift of God.
- 6:16The Miller and his wife cared for the two children as if they
- 6:19had been their own. They lived such a long distance
- 6:22from the palace that they never heard any news that the royal
- 6:25babes were missing. As the two boys grew older, they
- 6:30became the handsomest, cleverest lads in the whole Kingdom.
- 6:33The gold stars shone and twinkled upon their foreheads.
- 6:38At last the Miller's wife made little caps for them to wear to
- 6:41hide the stars. They were all together too
- 6:43conspicuous. Then one sad summer of
- 6:48pestilence came upon the land, and the good Miller and his wife
- 6:50died. The two children were left alone
- 6:54in the world. The listening king had decreed
- 6:57that all orphan children in the Kingdom should be brought to the
- 7:00royal city, so that they might be fed and cared for.
- 7:05The Miller's two orphans went with the others, and the King's
- 7:08wicked sisters in law saw them. They recognize them at once
- 7:11because of the golden stars upon their foreheads.
- 7:15We must make a new plot to destroy the royal children, said
- 7:18one sister to the other. And we must be quick about it,
- 7:21or the King and Queen will see them and recognize them too, by
- 7:24the golden stars. Are you quite sure these are the
- 7:28two royal babes we threw in the river?
- 7:30Asked the other sister doubtfully.
- 7:32It is a bit difficult for me to believe that our sister's
- 7:35children can be so handsome. I'm entirely certain of it,
- 7:39assured her sister. There is no one except the royal
- 7:42babes who could have those golden stars.
- 7:46While the wicked sisters plotted, the two children had
- 7:49approached the royal gardens. Inside the garden there was a
- 7:52beautiful parrot with feathers of green and gold.
- 7:57I'm going to catch that bird, said one of the brothers.
- 7:59Wait here while I go inside the gates.
- 8:02He could not catch the parrot, and he called his brother to
- 8:04come and help him. Together they succeeded, and
- 8:08with the beautiful golden green parrot tightly clutched, they
- 8:12tried to slip outside the gate of the royal gardens.
- 8:17Just as they were almost out, the great gates swiftly closed
- 8:20and caught their garments. We're caught, we are caught,
- 8:24cried the two children. How can we ever get the gates
- 8:27unfastened? At the sound of their cries, the
- 8:30royal gardeners, the courtiers and the listening king himself
- 8:33came to the rescue. When the King saw the golden
- 8:35stars upon their foreheads, he leaned against the nearest tree
- 8:38for support. What children are these?
- 8:41He asked in a voice which shook. I never saw them before, replied
- 8:45the head gardener. I think they're some of the
- 8:47orphan children which the great mercy and clemency of your Royal
- 8:50Majesty have caused to be rescued from the plague.
- 8:54Where are your parents, my children?
- 8:55Asked one of the courtiers. We are the children of the good
- 8:59Miller and his wife, they replied.
- 9:01Our kind foster parents are now dead with the plague.
- 9:05Where did this Miller and his wife find you?
- 9:07Asked the King eagerly. Then the two children told the
- 9:10story of how the Miller found them in the basket in the river.
- 9:14They knew it well, for it was their favorite story of all the
- 9:16ones which the Miller's wife had told them.
- 9:19The courtiers looked at each other in amazement.
- 9:22Everyone had noticed the bright stars shining on the children's
- 9:25brows. I believe you are the two dear
- 9:28babes lost from this palace, cried the King as he took them
- 9:31in his arms. We'll put you in that basket as
- 9:34the King's counsellors. If I knew, you may be sure that
- 9:39fitting punishment would be visited upon them.
- 9:41Cried the King. The beautiful green and gold
- 9:44parrot had escaped from the children's arms and had flown
- 9:47back to the tree near the gates of the royal gardens.
- 9:50Suddenly he was heard to speak. Go find the King's sisters in
- 9:55law, were the words that he said.
- 9:58The King's sisters in law were quickly brought into the garden.
- 10:01A look at their guilty faces convinced everyone that they
- 10:04were the ones who had placed the royal babes in the basket and
- 10:06had thrown them into the river. You shall now receive the
- 10:10punishment which you have so richly deserved, cried the King
- 10:13as he frowned upon them sternly. Where is the good Queen?
- 10:17Someone asked. The Queen had been sleeping in
- 10:20her own apartments and had not heard the noise in the garden.
- 10:23When the courtiers brought her there, and she saw the two
- 10:25handsome boys with the bright shining stars on their
- 10:27foreheads, she fainted from joy. The end,
- 10:58well that one ended kind of abruptly, didn't get to see what
- 11:02the punishment was for the sisters and just ends with oh
- 11:05and they're back. I like that their mom wasn't
- 11:08wrapped in skin and spit on, but honestly this just feels like a
- 11:11shorter version of the previous story from Armenia.
- 11:14Still, I hope that you enjoyed it.
- 11:16And the podcast shout out this week is to cancel for
- 11:18maintenance. This podcast covers air
- 11:20mechanics and the stuff they go through to keep our flying
- 11:23machines in the air. You would think it'd be all
- 11:25glory or that they would quickly run out of stories, but in the
- 11:29end, it is an honest look at the hard work that goes into their
- 11:32job. And so if you like their show as
- 11:34much as I do, go and give them a listen, a like and a review.
- 11:38And the listener shout out is to Merch Luxemburg.
- 11:41It's located in the local area known as the Valley of the Seven
- 11:44Castles. The country's name comes from
- 11:47Count Siegfried getting a small plot of land named Little
- 11:50Castle. The city center goes back to the
- 11:5313th century and is a lovely little area.
- 11:56Do I want to visit? Sure do, but it's not in my top
- 12:00ten at the moment, but still looks very beautiful and very
- 12:03chill. And so to my one listener inside
- 12:07the dungeon in the castle, I say.
- 12:09And Luxembourgish mercy, a good nycht.
- 12:14Thank you and good night.
