- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Monday,
- 0:16August 17, 2026. Let's get you caught up. Sacramento
- 0:20police are investigating a weekend shooting along
- 0:22Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Officers were
- 0:25called to the 5300 block just after midnight
- 0:28on Sunday. Police say they found evidence that
- 0:31shots had been fired, but no injuries were reported.
- 0:34Officers investigated the scene and generated
- 0:36a report. No information on a suspect has been
- 0:40released. And meanwhile, in North Sacramento,
- 0:43police recovered an occupied stolen vehicle Saturday
- 0:46evening near Norwood and Jesse Avenues. Officers
- 0:50located the vehicle shortly after 7 p .m. Saturday.
- 0:53The driver was detained and arrested on related
- 0:56charges. And now, stepping outside. We're starting
- 1:01off the work week with a pretty comfortable August
- 1:04day. Expect some clouds early, gradually giving
- 1:07way to sunshine with a high near 90. Winds will
- 1:10be out of the southwest at 5 to 8 miles per hour.

- 1:46Now to CityWatch. Sacramento County has just
- 1:49updated its zoning code. Some of these changes
- 1:52may actually affect what you do at home. The
- 1:55Board of Supervisors approved a package addressing
- 1:57134 issues identified since the current code
- 2:01was adopted in 2015. And some of them are surprisingly
- 2:06everyday. Own a large property? Certain lots
- 2:10of at least one acre will be allowed to have
- 2:12more dogs and cats. In some agricultural and
- 2:15larger zone lots, that could mean up to as many
- 2:19as 10 pets. Run a business from home? The county
- 2:23is getting rid of its old rule limiting certain
- 2:25home businesses to 32 hours per week. Keep in
- 2:28mind, noise, traffic, and parking restrictions
- 2:31still apply, but the rules are being updated
- 2:34to better reflect remote work and internet -based
- 2:37businesses. Thinking bigger in the backyard?
- 2:42Workshops, studios, pool houses, and other accessory
- 2:45structures may have more flexibility, including
- 2:48heights of up to 24 feet in some circumstances
- 2:52when additional setbacks are provided. Restaurants
- 2:56will also get more freedom in catering options.
- 2:59And then there's the arcade rules. Sacramento
- 3:02County still had arcade regulations dating back
- 3:05to 1982. Rules written when officials were apparently
- 3:10worried that teenagers were skipping class and
- 3:12spending the day at the arcade. Those rules are
- 3:15finally being removed. And tattoo shops are getting
- 3:18an update also. They'll now be classified more
- 3:22broadly as body art facilities, reflecting services
- 3:26beyond traditional tattooing. Sacramento County
- 3:29says the larger goal is to remove outdated regulations,
- 3:32simplify confusing ones, and make the code better
- 3:35reflect how people actually live and work today.
- 3:38The changes take effect on September 10th, and
- 3:42yes, zoning still determines what gets built
- 3:45where. You're tuned in to the Sacramento Brief,
