- 0:07Speaker 2: in Hollywood.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Costumes are character.
- 0:10Speaker 4: Buck, Mary Kill wide shot, two shot, close.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Up this artist on artists on artists on artists. Do
- 0:17Speaker 1: you know why they call it show business? I always
- 0:19Speaker 1: wondered that.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Welcome back to artists on artists on artists on artists.
- 0:26Speaker 2: We all love movies, but a movie wouldn't be anything
- 0:29Speaker 2: without a script. And who writes those scripts? Well, it's
- 0:33Speaker 2: none other than screenwriters. Today we sat down with some
- 0:37Speaker 2: of Hollywood's most unique and talented screenwriters and picked their
- 0:42Speaker 2: brain all about writing. You might pick up a thing
- 0:45Speaker 2: or two on this episode, So let's listen.
- 0:48Speaker 3: In h Hi, Oh, I'm sorry, there you go.
- 0:52Speaker 5: No, you go ahead.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You know I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
- 0:56Speaker 5: Go ahead.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Hi, I'm shall shell with one al. This year I
- 1:05Speaker 3: wrote Christmas snow Globe Dating Circle. Last year I wrote,
- 1:09Speaker 3: Oh my God, I'm sleeping with a reindeer, and the
- 1:12Speaker 3: year before that, I wrote not so Silent of a Night.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I'm super excited to be here.
- 1:18Speaker 5: My name is Glenn. Glenn how Goal I am forty
- 1:23Speaker 5: five years old? Are we saying our ages?
- 1:25Speaker 6: I guess I am. I wrote seventeen years old Period.
- 1:34Speaker 6: It's a coming of age story about a girl who
- 1:38Speaker 6: gets her period at seventeen.
- 1:40Speaker 5: A little late for some but a little early for others.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Daniel Norway avant garde. I wrote mostly in prose, lyrical poetry,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and in silence. Some of my biggest films are Pages, Pages, Pages,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and Blood in the attic.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Hi, my name is Ron Buttons. I wrote the screenplay
- 2:03Speaker 1: Fucking Run. It's about a young man who learns to
- 2:07Speaker 1: fuck himself through his graduating class, all in time for dinner?
- 2:14Speaker 3: Shall we start with a question from the fishbowl?
- 2:17Speaker 5: Sure, I'll grab it. Hey. So the question that I
- 2:19Speaker 5: got right here is what is your process as a writer?
- 2:24Speaker 5: Every single day? You know, what do you do?
- 2:28Speaker 1: So?
- 2:28Speaker 5: What's your typical day? Who wants to start?
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'll start? I wake up six am? Eggs?
- 2:38Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, how did I like.
- 2:39Speaker 1: To go downstairs? I'm so sorry?
- 2:42Speaker 3: How do you like your eggs scrambled?
- 2:47Speaker 1: Then? I have sex with my wife from approximately eight
- 2:54Speaker 1: am to nine am. After that, I walk around. I'm angry.
- 2:58Speaker 1: By then I'm angry. I'm angry, and I don't know why.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I paced the hallway up and down. Sometimes I sometimes
- 3:04Speaker 1: I hit the wall a little bit and I go, God, why,
- 3:09Speaker 1: And then I write, and then I sit down and
- 3:12Speaker 1: I let it pour out of me.
- 3:14Speaker 5: Well, I gotta say, I can see that in your writing.
- 3:19Speaker 5: So many characters in your writing are frustrated that they
- 3:24Speaker 5: just had bad sex.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Feels like that's a I don't want to say that
- 3:28Speaker 6: you have a pattern, but that's a line that I
- 3:30Speaker 6: feel like I've seen in almost all of your films.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You know, it's a bit of go of course, go ahead.
- 3:35Speaker 2: No, I was just going to kind of reiterate what
- 3:37Speaker 2: he was saying. I felt like when I was reading
- 3:40Speaker 2: Fucking Run, I could tell that a big theme was
- 3:44Speaker 2: that this character is neither going to be able to
- 3:48Speaker 2: fuck correctly or run correctly. And I thought that was
- 3:50Speaker 2: a really interesting dichotomy and a really interesting theme throughout
- 3:54Speaker 2: the whole project. I felt like it was red you know.
- 3:57Speaker 1: No, that's that is exactly what I was going for, Daniel.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I wanted us to see, you know, this character, Kyle,
- 4:06Speaker 1: he claims I'm going to fuck and then I'm going
- 4:10Speaker 1: to run around this college, and he does neither because
- 4:16Speaker 1: he's too self absorbed. He cares too much about himself,
- 4:21Speaker 1: about what he thinks about what others think of him.
- 4:25Speaker 1: When he never stops to ask the question what about
- 4:28Speaker 1: other people? That's when he can fucking run, but he
- 4:32Speaker 1: can't fucking run until then. And that's really what I've
- 4:35Speaker 1: been trying to say.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I will. I will also add watching it, the conversion
- 4:40Speaker 2: of the dialogue on the screen was complex, was something
- 4:46Speaker 2: that drew me in immediately. And I think we have
- 4:50Speaker 2: clips of the movie itself if you just want to
- 4:53Speaker 2: talk about this scene.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Oh, yes, of course. This is when Kyle goes to
- 5:00Speaker 1: the sorority banquet with a date and he you know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: he's trying to figure out whether or not he can
- 5:09Speaker 1: fucking run through the place. Let's just take it from there, can.
- 5:15Speaker 3: I can I get bought the red Bult?
- 5:20Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll get it for you, And how about you
- 5:23Speaker 6: pay for it and you can buy me a drink
- 5:25Speaker 6: as well?
- 5:26Speaker 5: What's your name?
- 5:26Speaker 6: Taylor?
- 5:27Speaker 4: Fuck me?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Now?
- 5:29Speaker 4: Oh well no, not today.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I couldn't help it. Over here? Are you looking to
- 5:36Speaker 1: fuck because I'm also looking to fuck fuck me?
- 5:40Speaker 6: Now?
- 5:41Speaker 2: Wow?
- 5:43Speaker 1: Wow?
- 5:44Speaker 5: That was really good, really good clip.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And you can see the pain he's going through. You
- 5:49Speaker 1: can see it coursing through his veins. He's hurting right now.
- 5:52Speaker 1: He wants to fucking run, but there's simply too many options.
- 5:56Speaker 5: And that's in the lead role. That's which his name
- 5:58Speaker 5: Jesse Eisenberg.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Correct.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Wow, what an incredible performance on Jesse.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I feel like he captured that.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And they do invent Facebook about you know, that's the
- 6:09Speaker 1: tag of the movie essentially.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I yes, there's that scene.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Yeah, you did a post credit sequence where the character
- 6:15Speaker 6: turns in and Mark Suckenberg.
- 6:18Speaker 2: It's like we didn't realize his name was Mark the
- 6:20Speaker 2: whole movie. We didn't realize. At the post credit he goes,
- 6:23Speaker 2: I've got an idea, and then you type in the Facebook.
- 6:26Speaker 2: It was so interestingly genius.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Shell Shell.
- 6:30Speaker 5: I want to ask you your writing, your daily schedule, would.
- 6:33Speaker 4: You do there?
- 6:34Speaker 3: Sure? Sure, Glenn, thank you for asking me. So every
- 6:40Speaker 3: morning I say, Haylexa, play Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson,
- 6:46Speaker 3: and she plays it and then I touch myself I
- 6:51Speaker 3: did under the covers, and then I make myself.
- 6:55Speaker 2: We'll stop for a second.
- 6:58Speaker 3: So every morning I wake up and I say, hey,
- 7:00Speaker 3: Alexa got that. We got that play Banana Pancakes fight
- 7:04Speaker 3: Jack Johnson. And then I go into the coverings and
- 7:08Speaker 3: I text myself and then I make a.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Big clear this time, let's clear.
- 7:13Speaker 3: This time I go under the covers.
- 7:15Speaker 2: MM, we got that, and I thank you myself. So
- 7:20Speaker 2: just a question from an artist perspective, are you're touching
- 7:22Speaker 2: yourself to the song Banana Pancakes? Is that there's something?
- 7:26Speaker 3: Yes, it's a part of my writing, warm up, my
- 7:28Speaker 3: writing more routine. I get a big hot chocolate and
- 7:35Speaker 3: then I put a bunch of sprinkles on top of
- 7:38Speaker 3: the chocolate and then I put the sprinkles and the
- 7:41Speaker 3: whipp cream from the hot chocolate on my hands and
- 7:43Speaker 3: I ditch myself again and then.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Then can you cover your hand with sugar? And then no, no, no,
- 7:51Speaker 2: go back, please go back?
- 7:52Speaker 3: What was the thing I say? I say, hey, Alexa,
- 7:54Speaker 3: please play Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson. Go under the
- 7:58Speaker 3: covers and honestly, from there, it's different than all you guys,
- 8:03Speaker 3: because Christmas movies are different and that different. And I'll
- 8:08Speaker 3: say this, you guys are all writing for big studios.
- 8:10Speaker 3: If I'm sure I write for a network, I write
- 8:13Speaker 3: for Hallmark. And it's very different, and it's a wacky process.
- 8:19Speaker 3: What about you, guys, what's your process?
- 8:21Speaker 6: You want to go.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Ahead with this one?
- 8:24Speaker 2: I wake up and then what proceeds is a day
- 8:29Speaker 2: filled with colors and sounds and rhythms. Where do we
- 8:34Speaker 2: go in a day? Where I go?
- 8:36Speaker 1: Is?
- 8:36Speaker 2: I start in my bed, I enter the kitchen and
- 8:39Speaker 2: I think, And this is a really important part for me,
- 8:43Speaker 2: I guess for my process. And I don't know if
- 8:45Speaker 2: this is interesting or not, but I try to think
- 8:47Speaker 2: about what a tree would do in a kitchen or
- 8:49Speaker 2: a plant would do in a chitchen. Yeah, for me,
- 8:51Speaker 2: because I want to plug into the ground. I want
- 8:54Speaker 2: to deep dive deep into the ground. I want to
- 8:57Speaker 2: dig up. I want to get all those nutrients. I
- 8:59Speaker 2: want to suckle them up, and I want to spread
- 9:01Speaker 2: them in my kitchen, just to spread that juju juju,
- 9:05Speaker 2: you know that a little bit of a juge to
- 9:08Speaker 2: all the things. So then I'll sit down and I'll write,
- 9:11Speaker 2: hopefully for either five minutes or seventeen hours straight. It's
- 9:18Speaker 2: one or the other, and I can never tell you
- 9:20Speaker 2: which one it is. I can never predict which one
- 9:24Speaker 2: it is, but it's always five minutes or seventeen hours straight.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Now it's very confusing to me when in that day
- 9:32Speaker 1: do you fuck?
- 9:34Speaker 2: Oh? I don't fuck. I've never fucked and I never
- 9:37Speaker 2: will fuck. It's a vow I took fourteen years ago.
- 9:41Speaker 2: It's almost a different version, if you will, of a
- 9:44Speaker 2: monk hood an monkness.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Can I ask you how you write your love making scenes?
- 9:50Speaker 3: I know there's a gorgeous romantic love making scene and
- 9:52Speaker 3: Blood in the Attic.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah, well, thank you so much for asking this. The
- 9:56Speaker 2: thing that I try to do is, even though I'm
- 9:58Speaker 2: not having sex per se, I can picture it. And
- 10:02Speaker 2: how I picture the world is through colors, is through sounds,
- 10:06Speaker 2: is through music, is through vision. So when I'm when
- 10:10Speaker 2: I'm going to write a love scene, and I've actually
- 10:12Speaker 2: got one for you guys here, if you guys want
- 10:14Speaker 2: to look at it, I'm aiming not for the actual act,
- 10:18Speaker 2: but what is everything, you know, everything that's encaptured in it.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So this is my titular film, Blood in the attict,
- 10:26Speaker 2: the love scene in there.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I am a man with a fashion. I'm looking for
- 10:35Speaker 1: a tree.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Cock cock cock cock cock.
- 10:40Speaker 6: I I compass compass in my ureth bro guide me
- 10:45Speaker 6: towards the north Star.
- 10:48Speaker 1: One day we will live in.
- 10:53Speaker 3: I'm arriving.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm a lying beam of lime arrive is arrived to
- 11:06Speaker 1: Tampagne Supernovan.
- 11:10Speaker 2: What.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Wow, I don't know who. I love it so much.
- 11:14Speaker 3: I love blood in the attic. Wow, that was so good.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Thank you, some freaky diky stuff. I really like watching that.
- 11:20Speaker 3: It's Glenn Stern, Glennstern, Glenn, we want to hear you, Glenn.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Oh wow, Well it's nothing special, you know. I you know,
- 11:27Speaker 4: I'm writing stuff about high school kids, so what better
- 11:30Speaker 4: way to learn about that?
- 11:32Speaker 2: Then?
- 11:32Speaker 4: You know. I hang out with my daughter Charity, she's seventeen,
- 11:36Speaker 4: and I hang out with all of her friends. I
- 11:40Speaker 4: you know, I have them come over. I have every
- 11:43Speaker 4: kind of video game you could ever ask for. It's
- 11:46Speaker 4: in my basement, and they come down and we all
- 11:48Speaker 4: play together and we have a lot of fun. Sometimes
- 11:51Speaker 4: Charity isn't even there. We have so I think I
- 11:53Speaker 4: like to think sometimes that I'm better friends. Don't tell
- 11:56Speaker 4: her this, and Charity, if you're listening to this, go
- 11:59Speaker 4: to bed. But yeah, I like to think I'm better
- 12:03Speaker 4: friends with her friends than she is with them. But
- 12:06Speaker 4: we get along in a very specific way, and they
- 12:08Speaker 4: tell me everything that's going on in their life, and
- 12:11Speaker 4: it's so true and authentic and real and the age
- 12:15Speaker 4: of their parents. But I am the emotional connection of
- 12:20Speaker 4: one of their cohorts.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Now, I noticed in your movie.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Period seventeen years old period, yeah seven.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I noticed that in seventeen years old period there is
- 12:36Speaker 1: a sort of periphery forty seven year old male character
- 12:40Speaker 1: who's just kind of around and he's just sort of
- 12:45Speaker 1: there offering tampons. Could you I think I think that
- 12:50Speaker 1: confused a lot of people. Could you speak to that?
- 12:53Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it wasn't his character's name Flenn.
- 12:56Speaker 4: His name was Flenn. Now, and here's the thing. I
- 13:01Speaker 4: only realized after this movie came out that that was
- 13:05Speaker 4: a singular situation to my situation. Other people didn't have
- 13:10Speaker 4: fathers following the friend groups carrying tampons. I of course
- 13:15Speaker 4: thought this was normal, which is what I wrote into it.
- 13:18Speaker 4: And then and then I got a bunch of letters
- 13:22Speaker 4: and I found out it was it was different, which
- 13:24Speaker 4: made a little singular. I think we do have a
- 13:26Speaker 4: clip of this if you guys want to watch us.
- 13:28Speaker 2: But what scene is this?
- 13:30Speaker 4: This is the scene where Flynn is notices that character, right, Yeah, yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 4: This is a one of his few scenes. It was
- 13:43Speaker 4: one of his few scenes where everybody is crying because
- 13:47Speaker 4: all of the girls got their periods at once and
- 13:49Speaker 4: they didn't know what they were and they were scared,
- 13:52Speaker 4: and the men all ran away. They got scared as well,
- 13:57Speaker 4: and they didn't like the sided loud. Some of them fainted,
- 14:00Speaker 4: some of them ran. But no, there's no men in
- 14:03Speaker 4: the high school right now except for Flynn, who's seen
- 14:05Speaker 4: it all, and he finally gets to speak.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Gray, Hey, what's going on?
- 14:14Speaker 7: Bro Oh Glenn, We're so happy you're here. We're so happy.
- 14:19Speaker 7: We're so happy you're here.
- 14:22Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 14:23Speaker 3: All the boys ran away? Flynn?
- 14:26Speaker 7: Flynn, we have big, yucky periods and we're so happy
- 14:31Speaker 7: you're here to help us.
- 14:34Speaker 3: If I had to describe my period, Flynn, it would
- 14:37Speaker 3: be yucky and big and yucky.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Hey, stop it. Your periods aren't yucky and big. And
- 14:46Speaker 2: those seventeen year old boys they just don't understand. Now,
- 14:49Speaker 2: how about this. How about I get you seven girls
- 14:55Speaker 2: a bunch of tampacs. Pearl, We'll go to the tampon isle.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Eat it.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Hey, those boys, super Girl, I'm here for you.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Who's gonna say me. Yeah, that's a that's a that's
- 15:10Speaker 4: one of my favorite.
- 15:11Speaker 2: That's the one you decided to show us.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good one. And as you guys can
- 15:15Speaker 4: see if Flynn of course played by Jesse Eisenberg, which
- 15:19Speaker 4: is so funny, so funny. Yeah, I mean he isn't
- 15:23Speaker 4: he great to work with? He's a genius, He's so great.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Well, I've got a question for the group. I would
- 15:29Speaker 2: like to ask. You know, a lot of people struggle
- 15:32Speaker 2: with writer's block. Not something I've ever struggled with, but
- 15:35Speaker 2: I could answer it for sure. I'm interested if you
- 15:38Speaker 2: guys ever struggle with that and what what are your
- 15:41Speaker 2: techniques to get past those blocks and push through that?
- 15:45Speaker 5: You know, a great, great, great question, Danny.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Thanks very good. I I don't get it a lot
- 15:55Speaker 1: because I'm a guy who knows what I want. I
- 15:57Speaker 1: know what I want, and I write it down. That's
- 15:59Speaker 1: all the way I do it. But sometimes, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I find myself writing these punching and fucking scenes over
- 16:08Speaker 1: and over and over again. Nobody's ever punching and fucking
- 16:10Speaker 1: at the same time. By the way, those are just two. Yeah,
- 16:13Speaker 1: it's just what I oscillate between.
- 16:16Speaker 4: After the controversy, you said part of those Yeah, from
- 16:18Speaker 4: now on.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I keep a firm, firm distinction. There is no
- 16:24Speaker 1: punching at the same time that there is fucking. It's
- 16:28Speaker 1: not my bedroom. That's not my bedroom.
- 16:30Speaker 4: In your new films, yeah, and the old ones, there
- 16:33Speaker 4: were some great lines.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Well, you know, the times they change.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I remember, I mean, Mating Season changed my life. Mating
- 16:41Speaker 2: Season where you have that scene where the boxers are
- 16:44Speaker 2: both beating the shit out of each other and also
- 16:47Speaker 2: having the most intimate relationship sex I've ever seen.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Are you talking about mating season Fuck City or mating
- 16:55Speaker 1: Season Fucked Till the Sun is Up?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Okay, Mating Season Fucked to the Sun the Sun favorite movie,
- 17:02Speaker 3: that's my grandpa's favorite.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Mating season, Fuck City, Mating Season, Fuck City. They did
- 17:08Speaker 2: have that beautiful, beautiful boxers making love, but it just
- 17:12Speaker 2: didn't hit as hard because Fuck Till the Sun Comes
- 17:15Speaker 2: Up has the punching.
- 17:17Speaker 4: And that's the first movie my daughter ever saw, Biting City,
- 17:20Speaker 4: making Season, Fuck Till the Sun Comes Up? Thank you.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I tried to. I tried to get you know, we
- 17:26Speaker 1: had to get to the punching. We had to earn
- 17:28Speaker 1: the punching. After after Fox City was over. I thought,
- 17:31Speaker 1: you know, I mean, they're slapping and they're kissing, and
- 17:35Speaker 1: they're slapping and they're hurting. You can tell they're hurting.
- 17:37Speaker 1: But where do we go from there? How do we
- 17:39Speaker 1: advance this character? There's nowhere to go but punch.
- 17:44Speaker 2: M hmm. Well that's actually why I'm really excited, because
- 17:46Speaker 2: I know that you're doing this before sunset, after sunset,
- 17:50Speaker 2: but you know that trilogy. I know you're doing it
- 17:52Speaker 2: with mating Season, Fuck City, fucks till the sun comes up.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Do you think we could get a peek at maybe
- 17:59Speaker 2: what the title is for the next film?
- 18:01Speaker 5: Oh, come on, supposed to Ronnie.
- 18:05Speaker 2: We're so excited.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Well, you've you've you've twisted my hand. You've twisted my hand.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Let's just say a little bird. He told me that
- 18:18Speaker 1: the title of the trilogy is going to be Mating Season.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Fucky fucky, Wow, Wow wow Wow. Follows the boxers punching
- 18:30Speaker 1: and fucking their way to their daughter's baptism, at which
- 18:34Speaker 1: point they get punched and fucked by Christianity itself. Now
- 18:39Speaker 1: we take a hard pivot to God. This one hard pivot,
- 18:43Speaker 1: you guys. I saw Christ, I saw Christ very recently.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I know I've heard about your.
- 18:50Speaker 4: You you're gonna separate the separate the punching and the
- 18:54Speaker 4: and it sounds like this movie is with but well.
- 18:58Speaker 1: You know, I'm learning after this.
- 19:00Speaker 4: One starts Monday that before I'm.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Making every it's a resolution I make every year stop
- 19:10Speaker 1: making a punch and fuck, oh my god, we all
- 19:13Speaker 1: know we're never gonna do it. You're always going to
- 19:15Speaker 1: reach for that ice cream cone. That's what the people
- 19:18Speaker 1: want to see.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Can you say the title one more time? I'm dying here,
- 19:21Speaker 3: just one more time.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Okay, the title is Mating Season Fucky fucky wow wow Wow.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. That's crazy to me because my new
- 19:35Speaker 3: movie is called SNOWBALLI Season.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Wow wow wow.
- 19:42Speaker 3: No way, yes, really similar show.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I just have to say, I really admire the way
- 19:50Speaker 1: in your films that people, you know, it's network, they
- 19:54Speaker 1: fuck without fucking right, Santa Claus comes in and they
- 19:58Speaker 1: and they fuck without even getting close to it. But
- 20:01Speaker 1: you know they are.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Thank you for that. Yeah. Yeah, I really have to sometimes,
- 20:07Speaker 3: using the boundaries of the network, find the freedom in
- 20:10Speaker 3: that boundary and finding like what where can a meeting
- 20:15Speaker 3: of the minds or a meeting of the bodies happen,
- 20:17Speaker 3: especially in a time so heightened as the holidays.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Well that's I'll say. I loved when you know. I
- 20:25Speaker 2: was watching Oh my God, I'm Dating a Reindeer just
- 20:27Speaker 2: the other day and I thought, wow, you know, even
- 20:32Speaker 2: though I don't see it, I know, I know this
- 20:35Speaker 2: girl is going down on this reindeer. I know.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Thank you so much. And also I'll use this public
- 20:41Speaker 3: forum just to address the beast reality complaints about the film, please,
- 20:48Speaker 3: because I mean, this is like artists on artists. It's
- 20:51Speaker 3: like I would love to talk about this with some
- 20:52Speaker 3: other people that have made some like edgy stuff. And
- 20:55Speaker 3: as a holiday films writer, I wouldn't call myself an
- 20:58Speaker 3: edgy writer, but I did have some experiences that year,
- 21:02Speaker 3: the year I wrote I'm Dating a Reindeer, I had
- 21:05Speaker 3: some near life or death experiences. And it really just
- 21:08Speaker 3: like those things. You guys are writers, you know what
- 21:09Speaker 3: I'm really talking about. Those things shake you and they
- 21:12Speaker 3: make you go I'm not going to show. I'm going
- 21:14Speaker 3: to tell. I'm not going to show. I'm going to tell.
- 21:19Speaker 3: And I did it and I don't. I mean like.
- 21:23Speaker 2: They I'm confused. I'm confused. I don't think you addressed
- 21:26Speaker 2: any of the bestiality things. Sounds like you actually did. No,
- 21:34Speaker 2: just now you didn't.
- 21:36Speaker 4: They didn't have backup, backup, if.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Anything, you said you had a bestiality experience.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I start every morning and I say, hey, Alexa, we
- 21:45Speaker 3: know this. Say okay, I am not addressing the bestiality
- 21:53Speaker 3: of complaints and I am not allowed to because of
- 21:56Speaker 3: my lawyers, but I'd like to address them here. Every morning,
- 21:59Speaker 3: I say, hey, Axa, please play Banana Pangings by Jack Johnson, and.
- 22:07Speaker 2: You too, please.
- 22:10Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I just want to give her the floor. She has
- 22:12Speaker 1: the floor.
- 22:13Speaker 3: You boys are nuts. I feel like I'm getting hit
- 22:16Speaker 3: on in here.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Oh you sound like Scooter. Like you sound like Scooter,
- 22:20Speaker 4: my daughter, Charity's non binary friend.
- 22:24Speaker 1: That's a good name.
- 22:26Speaker 3: That's such a good name.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Hold on, I gotta write that name. That's a good name.
- 22:31Speaker 3: I'll take another question from the fishbowl. What's your favorite
- 22:34Speaker 3: line of dialogue you've ever written.
- 22:36Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 22:38Speaker 2: You know, this is tough because when I specifically choose dialogue,
- 22:43Speaker 2: most of the time I'm just really just typing, pressing
- 22:48Speaker 2: keys on my keyboard, just aimlessly pressing keys, hoping that
- 22:53Speaker 2: it's it makes sense. But maybe my favorite dialogue line
- 22:58Speaker 2: is from my movie Blue is a Color. And you know,
- 23:04Speaker 2: why don't I just show it here? This is what
- 23:06Speaker 2: I thought perfectly summarized the character arc of the movie.
- 23:11Speaker 2: You know, this character has been desperately, desperately, desperately trying
- 23:15Speaker 2: to kill themselves and no matter how hard they try,
- 23:19Speaker 2: they just can't seem to do it. And this is
- 23:21Speaker 2: a three and a half hour movie, so you know
- 23:24Speaker 2: there's been a lot of attempts. And right at the end,
- 23:27Speaker 2: right before they have their final attempt, they say.
- 23:31Speaker 1: This, eass being in the bathtop again.
- 23:39Speaker 4: That is a great line.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Wow, you're sleeping in the bathtot again. For me, it's
- 23:43Speaker 2: the subtext. It's the subtext upon the subtext, upon the
- 23:46Speaker 2: subtext on the subject.
- 23:48Speaker 4: And is that an original tune or is that to
- 23:50Speaker 4: the June of something else?
- 23:52Speaker 2: That is an original tune?
- 23:53Speaker 1: Me?
- 23:53Speaker 2: And actually funny enough, Jesse Eisenberg, we worked on that tune.
- 23:57Speaker 2: He is really tell he gets around, he's really really good.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Hey, Sheelle, I'd love to play your favorite line from
- 24:08Speaker 4: your movie. What is your favorite favor?
- 24:10Speaker 3: Can I am I allowed to perform it or you
- 24:12Speaker 3: can perform unless we want to play it.
- 24:15Speaker 2: We can play, you can perform.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I'd love to perform it. I mean I never get
- 24:18Speaker 3: to perform my own lines.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Well, why don't you say it and then we'll watch it.
- 24:21Speaker 2: We'll see both.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Okay, I'll say it and then we can see how
- 24:24Speaker 3: the actress did it. My favorite line of dog I've
- 24:27Speaker 3: ever written thunk me so hard, ring ring.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Wow, that's good brave.
- 24:42Speaker 1: G rated movie.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I'm sorry, Network, it's the F word is
- 24:50Speaker 3: snowballed out and we can watch it now.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Wow for me, Rain dear fart me.
- 25:01Speaker 7: Wow.
- 25:03Speaker 3: I love the train in the background.
- 25:06Speaker 5: I love the training really good.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Wow that really? You know that actually sounds kind of
- 25:12Speaker 4: like what you meant originally. It doesn't really change.
- 25:14Speaker 2: It, Glenn, how about you?
- 25:16Speaker 3: Crazy?
- 25:17Speaker 4: Oh, I didn't pick. I don't have a favorite line.
- 25:21Speaker 4: That's like picking one of my daughter's favorite friends. You know,
- 25:24Speaker 4: it's hard for me to pick. I just want to
- 25:26Speaker 4: play any clip. Let's just play any clip that you
- 25:28Speaker 4: have there, and I'll probably say that's one of my
- 25:30Speaker 4: favorite lines. So just let's play random one.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Flynn, I've been having some trouble at school.
- 25:39Speaker 2: What what's going on?
- 25:41Speaker 1: Well, see, there's this boy, Flynn, and he's really kind
- 25:47Speaker 1: and really cool and he's on the soccer team. But
- 25:50Speaker 1: I just don't think he's a very good listener. I
- 25:53Speaker 1: kind of want to take him to the dance, but
- 25:55Speaker 1: now I don't know.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Well, you gotta go with your gut. Okay, I gotta
- 26:04Speaker 2: go to Sheeley's soccer practice, so I go. I'll be back,
- 26:08Speaker 2: but stick around for dinner if you want. I'm making
- 26:11Speaker 2: hot pockets. My wife she died years ago.
- 26:16Speaker 3: That's your favorite line? While my wife died years ago?
- 26:20Speaker 4: No, the hot pockets one. I make hot pockets for
- 26:22Speaker 4: my girls every single night. Every flavor. I have a
- 26:26Speaker 4: hole I redid a cooler to have I made. I
- 26:31Speaker 4: bought some PVC pipe and I carved some holes. And
- 26:35Speaker 4: there is a hot pocket holder in the freezer and
- 26:38Speaker 4: you can you it's like a Petz dispenser for hot pockets.
- 26:41Speaker 4: It is really cool. You guys, you should come over
- 26:44Speaker 4: and check it out when the girls aren't there, which
- 26:47Speaker 4: is very rare.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Okay, what about you Ron hit us with your favorite line?
- 26:55Speaker 3: Ron?
- 26:56Speaker 4: What I mean, how could you pick a Ron buttons
- 26:59Speaker 4: fave line?
- 27:00Speaker 1: You know the thing about Ron Ron Button film is
- 27:05Speaker 1: that often the best lines are the silence in between
- 27:10Speaker 1: the punching. That's when we get the meat of it.
- 27:15Speaker 1: That's when we get the meat of what's going on.
- 27:18Speaker 1: So I just want to play a really quick clip
- 27:21Speaker 1: from spoiler it's from the new one. It's from Mating Season.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Fucky fucky Wow, Wow, wow wow. This is the part
- 27:33Speaker 1: where spoiler alert. You know, Ellen Pompeo and her gang
- 27:39Speaker 1: of boxers meet Jesse Eisenberg in the park for a
- 27:44Speaker 1: little bit of Mating Season. Uh so, let's just let's
- 27:48Speaker 1: just play that really quick.
- 27:51Speaker 2: You want to fight me, do you? Yeah?
- 27:57Speaker 1: I do that right there? That right there? See did
- 28:00Speaker 1: you hear what happened in the middle? Yeh did you
- 28:02Speaker 1: hear what happened in between those two lines?
- 28:04Speaker 4: I didn't hear anything.
- 28:06Speaker 1: And that's the point we're thinking.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Oh, you know, they always say that the pauses are
- 28:12Speaker 4: in the editing department, but I think you just prove
- 28:15Speaker 4: that they can be in the writing department too.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Well. You know that's what beat space space enter beat is.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Four Yeah, how many beats? How many beats did you
- 28:26Speaker 4: rite in there after that?
- 28:29Speaker 5: Wow?
- 28:30Speaker 3: Fourteen?
- 28:31Speaker 4: Can I ask you? I heard it from some of
- 28:32Speaker 4: my screamrin friends, this might be just kind of an
- 28:34Speaker 4: urban legend. The very first Buck City I heard there
- 28:37Speaker 4: were actually nine lines, and then there.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Were nine lines, and they are as follows, Let's go
- 28:45Speaker 1: to the city built for fucking. They were, Let's go
- 28:50Speaker 1: to the city built for fucking. I'm the mayor of
- 28:54Speaker 1: the city for fucking. Let's elect a city council, the
- 29:00Speaker 1: pros and cons of the city for fucking. The pros
- 29:06Speaker 1: and cons for the city of fucking are as follows
- 29:08Speaker 1: one many pros, two, there are no cons. And then
- 29:14Speaker 1: the final lines were punch, fuck, and punch again. So
- 29:20Speaker 1: I guess it was punch twice, so that that amounts
- 29:22Speaker 1: to nine nine lines.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Wow, I couldn't even tell.
- 29:29Speaker 1: And you never know because the silence speaks a.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Thousand words, and so much of that dialogue is in
- 29:35Speaker 4: one specific city council meeting. The rest of the movie
- 29:38Speaker 4: is so, and that scene is so.
- 29:40Speaker 2: The rest of the movie is just a big boxing
- 29:41Speaker 2: fight most of the time. Boys, sex, you.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Know, That's that was the goal. That was always I
- 29:47Speaker 1: wrote it on the page exactly like that, and that
- 29:50Speaker 1: is what popped up on your screen.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Incredible.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Well, I've got one final question pulling out of this
- 29:56Speaker 2: fish bowl. If you guys have any advice for young
- 29:59Speaker 2: and up coming writers, we'd love to hear it. This
- 30:01Speaker 2: is a great question, this is a religious question.
- 30:04Speaker 5: My advice stay young, Stay young however you can. The
- 30:10Speaker 5: older you get, the harder it is. Everything gets harder,
- 30:13Speaker 5: your money, the bending, your knees, it only gets harder.
- 30:19Speaker 4: So stay young. Oh and don't drink too much. I
- 30:27Speaker 4: guess also that I lost about twenty five years of
- 30:30Speaker 4: my life to an alcohol addiction. We didn't really talk
- 30:32Speaker 4: about that, but.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Oh well, I mean we could dive in if you want,
- 30:37Speaker 1: But if you.
- 30:38Speaker 4: No, I don't want to be known as the alcoholic.
- 30:41Speaker 4: I want to be known as the guy with teenage friends.
- 30:43Speaker 4: Oh and you are good, good, good. What about you guys?
- 30:47Speaker 4: What's some advice?
- 30:48Speaker 3: I think some advice i'd have is sleep with who
- 30:54Speaker 3: you want? Okay, all right, greate what you want, hark
- 31:02Speaker 3: those Harold angels singing, and they don't be ashamed to
- 31:07Speaker 3: touch yourself. Love who you want.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Okay, a little forward, I think.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Celebrate what you want. Hark those Harald angels singing.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay. Advice this has been artists on artists
- 31:41Speaker 2: on Artists on Artists, answering the question. Now, that's why
