- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everybody, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, and across the interwebs.
- 0:16Tyler Johnson: Is Tad and Phil… how's it going, guys?
- 0:20Phil: Oh, it's going, you know.
- 0:21Tyler Johnson: Were the thwips good, or were they okay?
- 0:23Phil: No, that was solid. Yeah, yeah, we heard them.
- 0:25Tyler Johnson: Okay, alright, it's prop… Yeah, it's your…
- 0:27Phil: You're swippin'.
- 0:28Tyler Johnson: It's the must… if the mustache is in the way, tell me, because, I mean, I know.
- 0:34Phil: I think, I think, between… I think your headphone, your, headset changeup, amplified your beard acoustics, because, yeah, it's definitely… Ted is, is, kicking us with, okay, with, is that a bendy or an action figure of Luffy?
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: I actually.
- 0:50Phil: Action figure? Okay, yeah, I couldn't… I couldn't see the joins. Oh, he comes in half!
- 0:55Tyler Johnson: Oh, that's cool.
- 0:56Tad Eggleston: Well, only because it's got that middle… Definitely.
- 0:59Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that.
- 1:00Phil: enjoying it, yeah.
- 1:01Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 1:02Phil: Interesting. That's not a, he… I was gonna say, I have to imagine that he does not ever, go in two pieces in, in one piece.
- 1:09Tad Eggleston: I don't think so.
- 1:11Phil: Yeah, that'd be odd.
- 1:12Tad Eggleston: Not yet.
- 1:13Phil: Yeah.
- 1:13Tyler Johnson: Nope, he just stretches, right?
- 1:18Phil: From the gummy fruit. That's what I remember.
- 1:20Tyler Johnson: Yeah, gum gum fruit. But you know.
- 1:23Tad Eggleston: For me, I do lots of pitching, and I figure he's one of the ones that would, like…
- 1:30Tad Eggleston: really rear back to throw a fastball.
- 1:34Phil: Oh, yeah, he would…
- 1:34Tad Eggleston: I would probably.
- 1:35Phil: Loosen up an arm, and… Get rolling.
- 1:38Tad Eggleston: Lean back.
- 1:38Tyler Johnson: Yeah, can you imagine?
- 1:40Tad Eggleston: Full extension, right?
- 1:42Phil: We'd probably have a.
- 1:42Tad Eggleston: simultaneously.
- 1:43Phil: Arm and leg windup, you know?
- 1:46Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:46Tad Eggleston: Also, because I finally on… on…
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: packed it from C2E2, because I talked to Olivia Quartero-Briggs this week. Luffy and Miles have been using their Jill and the Killers skateboard quite a bit lately.
- 2:05Phil: Cool.
- 2:06Tyler Johnson: Is that a tech deck, or is that a specific brand?
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: I don't know if it's a specific brand, but it's a… it's a good quality one.
- 2:14Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 2:16Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 2:17Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, yeah, yeah. So, Phil, you get to… you get to start the news.
- 2:21Phil: You could lose off.
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: This is your thing.
- 2:23Phil: Yeah, it was! Well, so, last week we, we talked a little bit about, Kickstarter's
- 2:28Phil: policy change, and over this past week, they actually did get enough feedback from it that they, apologized to their user base and creators, saying that they botched the rollout of it, and they didn't explain things right, and you know, as we had surmised, the pressure was coming from Stripe, the payment processor, and now they're going back to
- 2:50Phil: basically how things were before, which, you know, while also in that apology, posting, like, 3 or 4 guides, how to… how to, you know, put your project on Kickstarter and hopefully not get it taken down by Stripe. So, you know, it's an evolving situation, and I saw that as a good signal, you know? I think the CEO even said that…
- 3:10Phil: He's… he's gonna fight like hell for this one, because, the way that… the way that it was rolled out last week was not in alignment with their beliefs at all, so…
- 3:18Phil: You know, it was just, it was a good, it was a good moment to see, a corporate apology actually feel like it, and, you know, seem like, wow, okay, these people probably, do want to do things different and better.
- 3:32Phil: That's it, that's all I got.
- 3:33Tyler Johnson: That's it. Like, I like that. We let it hang there to make you feel uncomfortable.
- 3:36Phil: Right?
- 3:39Phil: I mean…
- 3:39Tad Eggleston: I care just as much as I cared last week.
- 3:43Tyler Johnson: Oh, man, that's funny.
- 3:47Tad Eggleston: Actually, do either of you listen to Pod Save America?
- 3:51Tyler Johnson: No, no.
- 3:52Tad Eggleston: Okay, so this week, the governor of…
- 3:56Tad Eggleston: Colorado commuted the sentence of… of, yo.
- 4:02Tyler Johnson: Indeed.
- 4:03Tad Eggleston: The lady that had election…
- 4:11Tad Eggleston: You know, had a 5-year sentence for election fraud because she'd stolen voting machines.
- 4:17Tad Eggleston: Yup.
- 4:19Tad Eggleston: And, like, huge numbers of people were all up in arms about it, etc, and… .
- 4:27Phil: Yeah, that doesn't seem like one of those, innocent crimes.
- 4:30Tad Eggleston: Tommy Vietor was essentially…
- 4:36Tad Eggleston: Honestly, I don't give a shit. It's just below my radar. There's too much other stuff going on. I don't have the bandwidth for it. And Jon Favreau was like…
- 4:48Tad Eggleston: I might have an even less popular opinion than Tommy.
- 4:52Tad Eggleston: Because I think an argument can be made that it was the right move. We're always talking about lower sentences from people who are first-time offenders of nonviolent crimes, and besides, now we can stop talking about this bullshit.
- 5:12Tad Eggleston: He didn't… he didn't pardon her. She's no… she's still a felon.
- 5:17Tad Eggleston: And then… and then John Levitt was like.
- 5:20Tad Eggleston: I might need to join the bulwark, because the bulwark had done up a huge piece on how it was horrible.
- 5:28Tad Eggleston: So, I feel like on this issue, I'm the…
- 5:33Tad Eggleston: I don't give a shit guy. Bordering on the they might have done the right thing.
- 5:40Tad Eggleston: Because here's the thing…
- 5:47Tad Eggleston: I can't believe I'm taking this to spend a little bit more time on it, but it's how my brain works. If they hadn't done anything…
- 5:54Phil: I want to get the motion.
- 5:54Tad Eggleston: Shit.
- 5:55Tyler Johnson: Phil and I, Phil and I are…
- 5:56Phil: You don't give a shit about…
- 5:57Tyler Johnson: We're not talking, if you notice.
- 5:59Tad Eggleston: And I know.
- 6:01Tad Eggleston: If it hadn't… if it had started from Stripe rather than Kickstarter, that would have been.
- 6:08Tad Eggleston: So, did they do it as well as they could have? No. But what would have been worse is if some campaign was successful, but then the funds didn't come through because Stripe said no.
- 6:22Phil: Well, I think that has happened in the past, and that's what kicks.
- 6:25Tad Eggleston: hasn't.
- 6:25Phil: Yeah, that's what they mentioned, that they're, they were posting guides to help creators, avoid those possibilities, and so they were changing…
- 6:37Phil: They were announcing…
- 6:38Tad Eggleston: These hadn't been… there hadn't been big, huge…
- 6:41Tad Eggleston: Stripe fucked my campaign stories yet.
- 6:45Phil: I hadn't heard a ton of them, but, I have… I mean, there have been times where, you know, campaigns have to go on hold or push back suddenly, and it might have been… I mean, they talked about how there are times that, Stripe would suddenly reverse approval on things, how they would approve it at one point, and then
- 7:04Phil: unapprove it after a certain other point. So, it's one of those things where even.
- 7:07Tad Eggleston: But that's where Kickstarter has to do something, and, like, what to do is hard, because they're not the one making any of the policies.
- 7:15Phil: Yes, and so that's why… that's why I'm saying that, this seemed like a good apology and, like, an immediate rollback, along with… along with them saying, like, hey, here's the actual issue, you know, here's what we're doing to try to help people with it.
- 7:29Phil: in the meantime, you know, and so it was… the tone was totally different. It, you know, it's one of those things where
- 7:36Phil: it… it restored faith in the company, and that's, you know, which is not something I say terribly often about companies, but .
- 7:44Tad Eggleston: I mean, really, the only time I lost faith in Kickstarter was when they started talking NFTs, and then they backed off of that, so…
- 7:51Phil: Yeah, so I mean, here's the thing, I will always.
- 7:54Tad Eggleston: But that was because they lost their key creators when they started talking blockchain.
- 7:59Phil: Exactly.
- 8:00Tad Eggleston: That's… that's when… that's when Iron Circus did a… did a crowdfunding campaign without them. That's when… Couple other…
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: big, regular contributors to campaigns without them. They went, oh.
- 8:15Tad Eggleston: We're not the only game in town.
- 8:18Tad Eggleston: So… And similarly, I only kind of care business news, but it's…
- 8:28Tad Eggleston: It's significant, and it'll be interesting to see where it leads.
- 8:34Tad Eggleston: publishers of both Marvel and Boom have moved on, so we've got some shake-up at the top.
- 8:40Tad Eggleston: This… this goes along with… with Mike Richardson at Dark Horse recently moving on.
- 8:48Tad Eggleston: So we've got… a lot of… recent shakeups.
- 8:53Phil: Killing?
- 8:54Tad Eggleston: At the time.
- 8:55Tyler Johnson: Change on the horizons, but… I don't know.
- 8:57Tad Eggleston: For that matter.
- 8:59Tyler Johnson: barely care.
- 9:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah, with, with, with, with the, with the Paramount…
- 9:05Tad Eggleston: deal likely to go through soon, it'll be interesting. I mean, like…
- 9:12Tad Eggleston: I don't care until I see what happens.
- 9:14Tad Eggleston: with the possible exception of Richardson, none of these guys have, like, enough of an industry track record that I believe… I mean, Dan Buckley's a good guy.
- 9:24Tad Eggleston: You know, but, like, Kai Day McDonald was essentially…
- 9:30Tad Eggleston: reporting that, oh, he seemed more relaxed at the Kirby dedication, maybe this is why.
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: ready to be gone. Yeah.
- 9:39Phil: My thought is, I mean, do they announce who's coming to those positions? Basically…
- 9:44Tad Eggleston: It, it is.
- 9:45Tad Eggleston: I don't know for certain at Boom, at Marvel, it looks like, Kevin Feige's getting to put his guys in place.
- 9:54Tad Eggleston: Which could actually wind up being a thing, because during the Perlmutter years, and Perlmutter is, like.
- 10:01Phil: Oh, yeah, he was terrible.
- 10:03Tad Eggleston: true piece of… of human garbage.
- 10:13Tad Eggleston: and understandably, Feige and most people don't get along with him well. So, like, one of the things Heidi had mentioned, and I don't know if she's done the deeper dive that she said she was planning to do yet.
- 10:26Tad Eggleston: Is that it kind of looked like the beginning of…
- 10:30Tad Eggleston: or the end of the power struggle that started in those years, where Feige finally got it so that
- 10:37Tad Eggleston: Look, I know that I'm gonna be able to work with the people on the comic side, rather than…
- 10:43Phil: need a…
- 10:44Tad Eggleston: I don't know who's one of Ike's guys who's…
- 10:47Phil: Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
- 10:48Tad Eggleston: This is not to say that Dan is one of Ike's guys, because I don't want to say anybody's one of Ike's guys.
- 10:53Phil: That was what I was getting at, is I didn't know that he had anyone who liked him in the comics industry.
- 10:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I don't know that he does, but he definitely had people who worked with him, and, like…
- 11:04Tad Eggleston: He had some interesting work, you know, you never know…
- 11:08Tad Eggleston: Like, one of the things I think about a lot in a general sense is, like.
- 11:12Tad Eggleston: how much Reaganomics has just become economics for certain?
- 11:18Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 11:19Tad Eggleston: age group of people. How much of the stuff that has no basis in fact, reality, any sort of research, whatnot, but was really, really popularly said in the early 80s, is just taken as fact by a certain generation?
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: Because they've rejected the bigger things and not realized that the bigger things were being backed up by these smaller things. They thought the bigger things were the wrong answer to these smaller…
- 11:52Tad Eggleston: or falsehoods.
- 11:54Tad Eggleston: But in fact, the smaller falsehoods only existed so that they could have the big wrong answer.
- 11:59Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 12:04Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 12:06Tad Eggleston: That falls more into, hey, did you know that even some Republicans aren't okay with the president having a $1.776 billion slush fund?
- 12:19Tyler Johnson: It's reasonable.
- 12:19Phil: Apology Fund?
- 12:22Tyler Johnson: A treason apology fund.
- 12:24Tyler Johnson: They left town.
- 12:26Tad Eggleston: rather than funding ICE.
- 12:30Tad Eggleston: they left town rather than, like, like, they couldn't get the votes in the House to, to not…
- 12:38Tad Eggleston: Like, they passed in the Senate a bill that would have ended his ability to
- 12:48Tad Eggleston: It's the word I'm looking for, execute the Iran war.
- 12:51Tad Eggleston: And they… they knew they didn't have the votes in the House to shoot it down, so… so the House…
- 13:00Tad Eggleston: Went home early, rather than…
- 13:04Tad Eggleston: passing the law that would have ended the Iran war, so the house is still kind of on his side, except that obviously not, because they had to leave home.
- 13:14Tad Eggleston: Or they had to leave to avoid passing a bill.
- 13:20Tad Eggleston: the Senate left early because they refused to pass ICE funding.
- 13:25Phil: Mmm.
- 13:27Tad Eggleston: the House had passed.
- 13:28Tad Eggleston: So…
- 13:30Tyler Johnson: S1 does.
- 13:32Tad Eggleston: After having a, like, 3-hour closed-door meeting with Todd Blanch that, seemed to have them more upset, not less upset, with the whole slush fund thing.
- 13:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 13:47Tyler Johnson: Crazy.
- 13:48Phil: Yeah, the…
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: cut.
- 13:50Tyler Johnson: As usual, it's… it's always a clusterfuck here in the United States.
- 13:55Tad Eggleston: And I saw a clip of Blanche on…
- 13:59Tad Eggleston: I forget if it was CNN or Fox, it'd be even funnier if it was Fox, but…
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: But he'd been introduced as… as Trump's…
- 14:09Tad Eggleston: Former personal attorney and… and the acting…
- 14:13Tad Eggleston: Attorney General, and he got all pissed off.
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: You don't have to say that first part. That first part's irrelevant. I'm the Acting Attorney General. Show me your respect, blah blah. They're sitting there going, no, the first part is not irrelevant, because generally, in the history of the United States, the fact that you were his personal attorney would make you
- 14:36Tad Eggleston: pretty much ineligible to be… Right. Attorney General.
- 14:45Tad Eggleston: That would have been the first question in hearings, and the last question in hearings.
- 14:56Phil: Truly a…
- 14:57Tad Eggleston: Anyway, we have a brand new catalog with some really good-looking stuff in it. Tyler, you want to lead us off with this series?
- 15:04Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Batman Bad Seeds, this is Sunset No. 1 from Matt Fraction, G. Willa Wilson, and Euseppe Kamankoli, and Cliff Rathburn. Gotham's

- 16:04Tyler Johnson: And Gotham loses power!

- 16:54Phil: Kachu, a middle-aged, semi-retired private eye who gained brief fame after marrying the starlet he was initially hired to find. But when Kachu's wife goes missing once again, the two are forced on an impromptu road trip to track her down.

- 17:20Phil: After that, we've got another one from Image that is Hammer Fist No. 1 from Rick Remender and Steve Epting and Matt Hollingsworth. Meet Mike Denton, a dirtbag, hitman, junkie, and absentee father who spent his life chasing the easy fix. Drugs, cheap sex, and murder for money, while failing the one person who still believes he can be better. His daughter.
- 17:43Phil: Now, on the eve of Black Noon, an ancient darkness that erases the light in all things, Mike has to drag himself out of the gutter, awaken a supernatural weapon powered only by love, and fight his way through the living embodiment of evil to save her. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of August 3rd, in shops, August 26th for ImageCops.
- 18:03Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 18:04Tyler Johnson: Tad still doesn't get to talk, but we're at midnight… Midnight X-Men number 1 from Jonathan Hickman and Matteo De Lafonte from Marvel. The clock strikes midnight, and it's the dark dawn of a new era. The shadows of New York City are stalked by vampires and the mutant empires.
- 18:24Tyler Johnson: The sword of Damocles hangs over the peace between these two species.
- 18:29Tyler Johnson: and the factions within them. An outright war is brewing, and the unturned will be caught in the crossfire. Blockbuster comic book writer Jonathan Hickman returns to the X-Men with a hunger for blood, as…
- 18:44Tyler Johnson: This new world of terror reimagines the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Final order cutoff will be July 6th, and this will be in shops August 5th.

In the grand tradition of Secret Wars, Crisis of Absolute Proportions, and Battle of the Network Stars comes a massive cosmic crossover. The Strange Force has returned after millennia to gather the finest champions from across the galaxy to compete in grand games.
- 19:21Tad Eggleston: But there's no fighting here. No, this is the fuck-offs. Some will win, some will lose, and everyone will come.
- 19:30Tad Eggleston: This is from Vault Comics, final order cutoff is July 6th, in stores on August 5th.

- 19:46Tad Eggleston: Chapter 1, The Thing About Me Dying.
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: Six actors built America's favorite sitcom. Millions tuned in. Billboards lit the sky. Then one of them died. A beloved cast member of the hit ensemble sitcom dies under mysterious circumstances, sending shockwaves through Hollywood and revealing the secrets, betrayals, and desires lurking beneath the glittering facade.
- 20:10Tad Eggleston: As the surviving cast members confront their past, old rivalries and hidden truths emerge, and the fine line between life and performance begins to blur. This is from Dark Horse Comics. Final order cutoff is August 3rd, in stores on September 19th.
- 20:28Tad Eggleston: Some graphic novels.
- 20:30Phil: We've got, first up is Conquest of the Cosmos by Alexandre Fontaine Rousseau and Francis Descharnay, over at Pow Pow, a wild ride into the depths of outer space as the heights of hubris. October 4th, 1957, the launch of Sputnik, a piece of orbital space junk that goes beep-beep, kicks off a battle for celestial
- 20:55Phil: supremacy between the USSR and the USA, rival superpowers armed with massive rockets, galaxy-sized egos, and zero chill. Over the course of a decade, scientists, politicians, and regular folks on both sides of the Iron Curtain grapple with the big questions. How do you convince a dog to volunteer for a one-way trip into orbit? Wouldn't it be easier to just fake the whole moon landing thing in a movie studio? And how are we supposed to sell command roof t-shirts
- 21:20Phil: coffee mugs if we don't get the sweet logo designed ASAP.
- 21:24Phil: It's gonna have a final order cutoff of July 13th, in shops August 26th, again, from PowPow.
- 21:32Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 21:34Tyler Johnson: Awesome. Alright, Disciples of the Soil from B. Muir, out from… on Avery Hill.
- 21:42Tyler Johnson: When the Prime Minister announces a new rail line in Istmire, there are protests from the wizards, who are concerned about the country's magic, from the naturalists, who fear the damage to the soil, plants, and animals.
- 21:55Tyler Johnson: And from the sisters of Our Lady who slumbers under the earth, who would prefer their giant serpent deity to rest peacefully.
- 22:03Tyler Johnson: As the railway proceeds, the worries of the wizards and the naturalists come to pass, and the earth has begun to shake. This has a final order cut off of July 13th, and will be in shops August 12th.
- 22:21Tyler Johnson: Ted, you got some instant noodles.

I have been eating a lot of instant noodles lately, so this caught my attention quite a bit.
- 24:00Tad Eggleston: Islands in the Sky. I have plugged the hell out of this, and I'll continue plugging the hell out of this. A People's History of Hurricane Helene by Andrew Iden, Brian Michael Bentis, Matt Fraction, Steve Orlando, Gene Lewin Yang, Josh Adams, Valentine Delandro, June Kim, Nate Powell, and more?
- 24:21Tad Eggleston: The story of Hurricane Helene is told by those who survived. Islands in the Sky brings those stories to life by pairing real survivors with award-winning comics creators to preserve what happened and help the region recover. This project, the first from Appalachia Comics Project, an imprint of Good Trouble.
- 24:39Tad Eggleston: is part record, part resistance, and part recovery. It's a testament to the power of community and creativity to bring healing and preserve the truth, but about one of America's deadliest and costliest
- 24:52Tad Eggleston: national disasters. Final order cutoff is June 29th, in-store is August 5th. Instant Noodles, the final order cutoff was July 27th, and in-stores August 26th.
- 25:05Tyler Johnson: Alright, second book by B. Muir, this is Terrible Means, out on Avery Hill. In the city of Ismire, something is stirring. An aristocratic businessman reveals the latest must-have, Pillar of Crystals.
- 25:21Tyler Johnson: The latest one, I'm not sure. A pillar of crystals that allows for the creation of beautiful illusions and powerful spells to be performed. At the same time, Henriette, a disgraced biology professor.
- 25:34Tyler Johnson: Feels the disquiet in the air as specimens she has studied for years begin inexplicably dying out. On traveling to Ismaier to warn the current Prime Minister and Council of an imbalance within the world's ecosystem and magic.

- 26:08Tyler Johnson: This is, final order cutoff of July 13th, and will be in shops August 12th.
- 26:16Phil: Next up, there's Unfinished Tales, a graphic novel from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Finnegan Blake is one of the most successful authors in the world, but he can't enjoy all the fame and fortune anymore.
- 26:29Phil: Because Finn is 10 years past his deadline on the final book in his epic fantasy series, and has no hope of ever finishing it. Until a little old friend shows up with the perfect solution to his writer's block. But their pact soon turns dark as egos clash and old secrets emerge, leading Finn to wonder exactly what kind of deal he's made, and how…
- 26:48Phil: And how far he's willing to go to get his final book onto the bestsellers list. Most writers would kill for Finn's life. Will he?
- 26:56Phil: It's gonna have a final cutoff of June 29th in stores November 11th from Image Comics.
- 27:04Tad Eggleston: It's not hyperbole to say that this is the book that I am most looking forward to this summer. I have read the first third of it. I am anxiously awaiting the final two-thirds. Worst man from…
- 27:17Tad Eggleston: Branton Stein. Titan Comics, a professional worst man, Radcliffe Raleigh, is hired by the mother of the bride and merciless tech mogul Valentina McElligott to stop the wedding of her youngest daughter. With the price of failure being his life, and less than 30 hours till I do, Rad's ready to pull out every trick in his arsenal to stop the wedding and save his skin.
- 27:41Tad Eggleston: Until he meets best man and beefcake, Chris Kafka.
- 27:45Tad Eggleston: Determined to keep the best man close for… hmm…
- 27:49Tad Eggleston: Purely professional reasons, Rad quickly realizes he may be on the wrong side of the aisle, and the only mistake needing to be rectified is of his own making. But with six sick guests, a ruined dress, and the smell of a conspiracy wafting from the Vallo vents.
- 28:06Tad Eggleston: Is it too late for Radcliffe to get the ceremony back on track?
- 28:12Tad Eggleston: From Titan Comics, final letter cut off is August 3rd, in stores on August 26th. How about some collections?
- 28:21Tyler Johnson: Yes, collections, I'm looking forward to this one, so that's why I picked it. Hank Howard, Pizza Detective, Volume 1, A Slice of Life from Robert Venditti and David Laffem.
- 28:32Tyler Johnson: From Bad Idea, Howard, or Hank Howard is back in the one place he thought he'd finally left behind, his hometown of Tampa.
- 28:42Tyler Johnson: But unfortunately for Hank, pizza crime doesn't take a vacation.
- 28:46Tyler Johnson: Before he knows it, he's knee-deep in his homicide case, in his first homicide case, facing down lawyers, locking lips with a long-lost flame, punching pirates, and dodging bullets as he races against time to solve his first-ever homicide case.
- 29:03Tyler Johnson: Final order cutoff of July 6th, and will be in shop August 5th.
- 29:09Tyler Johnson: And let me tell you, this has been really fun to read in issues.
- 29:13Tad Eggleston: Oh, I love Hank Howard.
- 29:15Tyler Johnson: Phil, if you're not reading Pizza Detective, Heincoward Pizza Detective, it's really funny.
- 29:20Tad Eggleston: I have the complete hardcover already. You do.
- 29:23Tad Eggleston: It was kick-started.
- 29:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's true.
- 29:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:28Tad Eggleston: Peep Show! Show Matt at Fanagraphics.
- 29:32Tad Eggleston: Luffy just fell apart.
- 29:34Tyler Johnson: Oh, Luffy!
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: I dropped his head on the floor. Well, really his… really the top half of his torso.
- 29:43Tad Eggleston: Okay, that's better. Now we're good. A few comic book series can claim to have influenced a generation of cartoonists, comic fans, and comedians the way Joe Matt's Peep Show did during his 14 issues from 1992 to 2006.
- 29:58Tad Eggleston: With an often alarming and always hilarious compulsion to confess, Matt found no aspect of his life that wasn't more grist for the humor mill. His dysfunctional and sometimes abusive relationships, his Catholic refression, his horrible social skills, his addiction to pornography, his masturbation habits, etc.
- 30:16Tad Eggleston: This book collects, for the first time the entire original 15-issue series in one hardcover volume, each presented as painstakingly restored facsimiles of the original issues.
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: The definitive Joe Matt collection also includes other art and ephemera.
- 30:32Tad Eggleston: from the artist's personal archives, including a handwritten introduction to a complete peep show collection that at the time was purely hypothetical, and was only discovered after his death in 2023.
- 30:44Tad Eggleston: Peep Show is routed out with an insightful afterword by Diana Schutz, and the Will Eisner Hall of Fame comics writer and… er, the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.
- 30:54Tad Eggleston: comics writer and editor, and longtime friend of Matt's, and sister of Trish, Matt's ex-girlfriend, and a key player in Peep Show's cast.
- 31:05Phil: Alright, and last up we have Voyeur by Leah Williams and David Baldian over at Ignition. The sexiest comic of the year is finally collected, and we promise this climax will be worth the wait. A lavish resort, a dangerous beauty, a security guard who can't keep his eyes to himself, and a heist like no other.
- 31:22Phil: Voyeur is a steamy art heist like nothing else on the shelves. Gonna have a final order cutoff of July 6th, in stores August 11th.

- 34:06Tyler Johnson: the act.
- 34:07Tad Eggleston: On July 8th.
- 34:08Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 34:09Tad Eggleston: Wanton soup?
- 34:10Tad Eggleston: from James Stacco, out from Onei on June 24th.
- 34:18Tad Eggleston: and wrestle heist out from Kyle Starks and Vladimir Popov at Image Comics on July 8th. And I'm gonna let somebody else read the crowdfunding, though I have…
- 34:30Tad Eggleston: I have or will talk to all of the people involved in these projects.
- 34:35Tad Eggleston: by Tuesday.
- 34:37Tyler Johnson: That's awesome. Wow. Phil, you want to read them, and I'll get the humble bundles?
- 34:42Phil: Sure. First up, there's Lab Zero Remix, a comics magazine hacking pop culture from Ronald Wimberly, on Kickstarter through June 9th. Tad just talked to Ronald before talking to us.
- 34:56Tad Eggleston: I got done talking with Ronald at about 5 o'clock. So, yeah.
- 35:00Phil: Whenever that gets posted, definitely go to listen to that one. Wimberly is a totally awesome artist.
- 35:06Tad Eggleston: It'll be up by the time this one is.
- 35:08Phil: There you go, that one Matt Boers comic, from Glenn Fleischman and presumably Matt Boers, on Kickstarter through June 11th, then there's.
- 35:19Tad Eggleston: I'm talking to them on Tuesday.
- 35:21Phil: Talking to them on Tuesday, alright. Stellar Remnant number 2 from Damon Jord Hampton on Kickstarter through July 15th.

- 35:41Tad Eggleston: Already talked to Mark Russell and Russ Braun, and we talked to Tom Pyre and Stuart Moore at Ahoy.
- 35:48Phil: It's a double whammy there. And then, Tezuka, God of Manga, from Jason Cohn.
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: Tezuka. Tezuka. I learned this. Tezuka.
- 35:56Phil: Tezuka, okay. Yeah.
- 35:59Tad Eggleston: I wouldn't have known before I watched the trailer for this, either.
- 36:04Phil: This is excellent.
- 36:05Tad Eggleston: It's really a… this is a… this is a documentary film.
- 36:08Phil: Okay. When did… when did you or will you talk to a.
- 36:12Tad Eggleston: I talked to him last week.
- 36:14Phil: Okay, and then there's Scar Tissue Bargains, from Steven Box, also launching soon on Kickstarter.
- 36:23Tad Eggleston: And I talked to him last week.
- 36:24Phil: Alright, there we go.
- 36:26Phil: And with that, Tyler, what's on Humble Bundle right now?
- 36:30Tyler Johnson: combo bundles, we've still got the complete Terry Moore, and that's not to sound like that's… oh, man, we've still got.
- 36:36Tad Eggleston: No, that's good. That's a good thing. They keep extending it. And if you haven't picked yours up yet, you really, really should.
- 36:43Tyler Johnson: Correct.
- 36:44Tad Eggleston: As you should The next two, the next two are fantastic.
- 36:48Tyler Johnson: It's got the… back to the Terry Moore, it's got everything, on it from the, the Terry Moore universe.
- 36:55Tad Eggleston: the Terry version.
- 36:56Tyler Johnson: the Terryverse, excuse me, the 54 items for $16. It goes to the World Central Kitchen, and it's extended till May 28th. A few days left to get in on that. Infinite Dead horror comics from Oni Press. This includes.
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: Infinite.
- 37:13Tad Eggleston: bed.
- 37:14Tyler Johnson: What did I…
- 37:14Tad Eggleston: Dread. There's an R. You said dead.
- 37:17Tyler Johnson: Oh, Infinite Dread Horror Comics from Oni. $18 gets you 23 different items, such as Cemetery Kids Don't Die, Dwellings.
- 37:28Tad Eggleston: Don't die, so they wouldn't work very well in the infinite dead. It's gotta be dread, because the cemetery kids don't die.
- 37:34Tyler Johnson: You are so correct. Book Industry Charitable Foundation is where that's going.
- 37:40Tad Eggleston: Also, Dwellings which you love, and meat eaters, which I love.
- 37:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Going till June 6th.
- 37:47Tyler Johnson: Last, we've got Hot Mess Express, a big bundle of misfit heroes and hilarious hijinks from Image Comics. You get 49 items for $18, things like God Hates Astronauts, I Hate Fairyland, Monkey Meat, goes to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation.
- 38:06Tad Eggleston: What do you have against Shirtless Bear Fighter, 8 Billion Genies, and Snot Girl?
- 38:10Tyler Johnson: Well, Snock Girl was really good, but I had to drop it.
- 38:16Tad Eggleston: You didn't like the last volume?
- 38:18Phil: I mean, I haven't read it at all, but why'd you have to drop it?
- 38:21Tyler Johnson: I just felt like it really dropped off as far as, like.
- 38:25Tad Eggleston: Why?
- 38:26Phil: I…
- 38:26Tad Eggleston: Doug the new volume.
- 38:28Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I…
- 38:29Tad Eggleston: I dug the new volume.
- 38:31Tyler Johnson: the plot changed, Phil, and I was like, yeah.
- 38:34Tad Eggleston: agree to disagree. Yeah.
- 38:37Tyler Johnson: The plot… here, I mean, this is the nicest way I can say it. The plot changed, and I wasn't on board.
- 38:42Phil: That's fair. That's totally fair. Yeah, no, I've… that's been one that I've seen, but haven't really heard yay or nay on, so…
- 38:48Tyler Johnson: Okay, so true.
- 38:49Phil: abuse.
- 38:50Tyler Johnson: Dottie is this online influencer, and she, has green hair, but she has really bad allergies, too, so she's always got, you know, snot coming out, right? So, it's… it's gross and funny.
- 39:03Tyler Johnson: But, that goes to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation. That is extended, not extended, but it's, you can get on that till June 9th.
- 39:15Tyler Johnson: Tad, 3 amazing books that you read this week.
- 39:19Tad Eggleston: Well, I threw him in the second spot for ones that I was hoping was spectacular, but, Condon knocked it out of the park on both his new series of the Earth.
- 39:29Tad Eggleston: Andrew Eric and Charlie Adlard, and his Ultimate Impact Reborn number one, with, Stefano Caselli.
- 39:39Tad Eggleston: Extra points because he used the spot.
- 39:42Tad Eggleston: The spot might be my favorite Spider-Man villain.
- 39:46Tyler Johnson: And… boom, right?
- 39:48Tad Eggleston: Right, right. The spots.
- 39:49Tyler Johnson: For our listeners that don't know, the spot is silly. But…
- 39:54Tad Eggleston: He is, and he isn't.
- 39:56Phil: He's in Spider-Verse 2, so it's hard to…
- 39:58Tad Eggleston: Hard to imagine how people.
- 39:59Phil: Who don't know about the spot anymore.
- 40:01Tyler Johnson: You're right.
- 40:01Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 40:02Tyler Johnson: I was in the Across the Spider-Verse.
- 40:05Phil: And presumably he will also be in, Beyond the Spider-Verse.
- 40:09Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 40:09Tad Eggleston: Wait a sec.
- 40:10Tyler Johnson: It's coming out, by the way.
- 40:11Phil: At some point. This year, next year? Let me check, let me check.
- 40:15Tyler Johnson: 20.
- 40:15Tad Eggleston: I'll let you check, because I should be talking. Okay.
- 40:19Tad Eggleston: Number 2 spot is actually gonna go to one that somehow flew under my radar, and I read the first 3 issues.
- 40:28Tad Eggleston: This week, of Hannah Rose May and Mariana Puglia's Smile for the Camera.
- 40:34Tyler Johnson: It's… oh, in 2017.
- 40:36Tad Eggleston: 18th of next year.
- 40:38Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 40:38Phil: June 18th next year.
- 40:39Tyler Johnson: Smile for the camera is really good, Ted, I agree with you.
- 40:42Tad Eggleston: It really is. It really is. Well, I like everything Hannah Rose May does, which is why I was surprised that it managed to float under my radar. But I saw it, and I'm like, oh wait, Hannah Rose May has another book? Let me read these. And they're very, very good.
- 40:58Tad Eggleston: And then the, End of the Arab of the Future, Volume 1, A Youth in the Middle East, Riyadh Sattoof at Banographics was a fantastic read. Lot of other good reads this week,
- 41:11Tad Eggleston: you know, I'll shout out some American Capers, some Barbarian Beyond Bars, End of Life, Dead Teenagers, Everyone Loves a Jewel Thief was really good, Narco was good, Neighborhood Watch number 2 was great, Powers 25, number 9, continues to just be…
- 41:28Tad Eggleston: Like, both a warm hug and an amazing, like, mystery…
- 41:33Tad Eggleston: Power's story, all at once, every issue.
- 41:37Tad Eggleston: I liked where Usagi Yojimbo Kaido went this week. I was… like…
- 41:43Tad Eggleston: pleasantly, pleasantly surprised with how much I liked Seven Wives,
- 41:50Tyler Johnson: It was good.
- 41:50Tad Eggleston: Tom King, and Tom King continues to kill it on Wonder Woman.
- 41:55Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 41:58Tad Eggleston: So… so… Yeah, I don't even know how to… Phil, just take a walk, because I don't even know.
- 42:05Tyler Johnson: We don't know how to… we don't know what you're talking about here. Walk with Phil.
- 42:08Phil: Right? I… see, and I… I… if I… if I was predictable, it would… it would be a walk with somebody else, surely. No, this week, I, got my hands on a book, that I'd been… I'd talked about on… on here several times, you know, every chance I got,
- 42:23Phil: And it was…
- 42:24Phil: even though I didn't really have any expectations for it, it was still nothing like I expected, and, that was, for our, for our One Piece race, that was, He Rolled Me Up Like a Grilled Squid by Sugi Yoshiharu, which is just a really bizarre collection of, vignettes that…
- 42:44Phil: seemingly were about the author, but also hopefully not about the author, because those are some pretty terrible people doing some terrible things, and a good amount of surrealism. So yeah, I…
- 42:55Phil: I something it.
- 42:57Tyler Johnson: Dad and I are both looking it up right now.
- 42:59Phil: Yeah?
- 43:00Tad Eggleston: I already know it.
- 43:01Phil: Yeah, it's the… so I now have to look up more of his work, and well, I still have to read the essay at the back, sort of, you know, providing additional context, hopefully, you know.
- 43:10Phil: details about his life that might, elucidate, you know, which parts are fact and which are fiction. But yeah, he's got at least two more books in my library that, I'm gonna check out, because this was apparently the fifth
- 43:22Phil: In a series of collecting his work from the 70s, which is also interesting.
- 43:27Tad Eggleston: Luffy is breakdancing on top of a skateboard.
- 43:30Phil: Skateboard breakdancing. I'm glad to know that… Skateboard breakdancing. Yeah, I was gonna say, so, so.
- 43:35Tad Eggleston: Muffy's totally got the ability to do that.
- 43:37Phil: Right, well, no, I… so I was gonna say that, interrupting this, the… I was gonna say that the… a special reason to… to look at more of his work is that, Suge just passed away in March of this year. Oh, he did. So, you know, yeah, I didn't realize that, so…
- 43:51Tyler Johnson: Fabulous.
- 43:51Phil: Until, like, this morning. So, yeah, looking forward to learning more about it.
- 43:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, it was a news item on 22 Panels.
- 43:59Phil: I believe so, yeah.
- 44:01Phil: It sounds like it would be.
- 44:02Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 44:03Tad Eggleston: So, anyway.
- 44:05Tad Eggleston: I am now 691 chapters in.
- 44:10Tad Eggleston: in week 100, so just under 7 chapters a week, but it's spring break, so… or not spring break, it's summer break. Yeah. Summer break! So hopefully, I will… I will start really…
- 44:24Tad Eggleston: Really laying on some… Some speed for a while.
- 44:29Tad Eggleston: As we have… you saved the kids that the government was…
- 44:34Tyler Johnson: Do you do your summer teaching this summer?
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: I am not. I'm taking the whole summer off.
- 44:41Phil: Good for you.
- 44:44Tyler Johnson: Cool, cool.
- 44:45Tad Eggleston: Podcasting, reading comics, working at the comic shop.
- 44:49Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 44:50Tad Eggleston: Maybe a little bit of travel, I know I'm gonna go…
- 44:52Tyler Johnson: Pretty much what… that's almost exactly what I'm doing, but, like, a little bit different.
- 44:57Tyler Johnson: Podcasting a little bit. You're doing mostly podcasting. Comic shop, working at the comic shop, reading comic books.
- 45:08Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, yeah.
- 45:09Tyler Johnson: Anywho, I have not… I have not been getting back into One Piece like I've wanted to, but I still want to, so that's something.
- 45:20Tad Eggleston: Your goal is to get back before the new anime series?
- 45:24Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 45:26Tyler Johnson: I'll do my best.
- 45:27Tad Eggleston: I guess you… was that… was that a week that you missed? Did you see that Netflix is doing a new…
- 45:33Tad Eggleston: Anime of One Piece?
- 45:35Phil: THE One Piece, where, the pacing is dialed up. They're gonna do, like, the whole Gray and Blue Saga in seven episodes.
- 45:42Tyler Johnson: Wow.
- 45:43Phil: Yeah.
- 45:44Tyler Johnson: Okay, no, I was not on that episode, I'm taking… I don't remember that conversation, but very cool.
- 45:50Phil: Yeah, no, I was gonna say, I really hope that, you, like, when you do get a taste for One Piece again, that you just keep it quiet, so that you might be able to, like, Dark Horse return and, you know, overtake Ted.
- 46:03Tyler Johnson: just start… well, that, and just start talking about it, the current story, like, I know exactly what it is.
- 46:10Phil: Right?
- 46:10Tad Eggleston: Yup.
- 46:11Phil: There we go.
- 46:12Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 46:12Tad Eggleston: That's… that's one option.
- 46:14Phil: Unless he's already been doing that, and he's just waiting for his moment to strike.
- 46:17Tad Eggleston: That, that is always possible.
- 46:19Tyler Johnson: No. Hey, guys, did you, both read Copra Volume 8?
- 46:25Phil: Yep.
- 46:25Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 46:26Phil: The death of Copra.
- 46:27Tyler Johnson: Yeah, what'd you think?
- 46:28Tad Eggleston: at the Cobra.
- 46:30Tad Eggleston: First of all, I don't think that they're completely dead. I think that there is…
- 46:35Phil: I mean…
- 46:36Tad Eggleston: is an opening.
- 46:37Phil: But I also… I land firmly on the other side of that. I think that's the end of the series, you know?
- 46:43Tad Eggleston: I think it's meant to be.
- 46:45Phil: Yeah, yeah. I mean, the fact that it ties up loose ends while also leaving them as loose ends for the characters, I think, to me, is what felt the most, like, climactic, like, okay, this is over.
- 46:58Tad Eggleston: No, that felt a lot like a…
- 47:02Tyler Johnson: I felt open-ended, like…
- 47:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, what I felt like was, I am done with Copra for the foreseeable future, but I am not going to end it in a way that if I change my mind 5 years from now, 10 years from now, whatever, that I can only tell prequel stories, or…
- 47:25Tad Eggleston: Whatever.
- 47:26Phil: Like, he's also at the point where he'd have to… like, the cast is… I mean, sure, everybody could just start waking up from their comas together, you know? But, like, it seems like…
- 47:37Tad Eggleston: Or you could not tell that part. I mean, this volume of Copra has worked a lot in real time.
- 47:44Tad Eggleston: But he could choose to do 10 years later, and then just…
- 47:50Tad Eggleston: tell what needs to be told in backstory, is what I mean.
- 47:54Phil: I guess… well, and that's where I… I guess what I'm saying is that it… it really feels like…
- 47:59Phil: I mean…
- 48:01Tad Eggleston: What it feels like to me is that if you asked him right now if he was ever gonna do Copra again, he'd say, I'm done.
- 48:08Phil: Yeah.
- 48:09Tad Eggleston: But, if you were a good friend, and you asked him.
- 48:12Tad Eggleston: can you possibly imagine it? He'd say, I can imagine it, I just don't think it's likely.
- 48:20Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 48:21Tyler Johnson: I agree.
- 48:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, I kind of wonder what, like… what they say now is that they always expected to get back to it, but I kinda wonder if you had asked…
- 48:35Tad Eggleston: Brian and Michael about powers…
- 48:42Tad Eggleston: 10 years ago… If they were gonna, like, ever return to it, return to it.
- 48:49Tad Eggleston: I don't know if you would have gotten the answer that would have led to Powers 25.
- 48:54Phil: Right, and I guess my point is that a return to Copra would be a different book from what it has been.
- 49:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 49:03Phil: Yeah. That's…
- 49:05Tad Eggleston: You're certain.
- 49:06Phil: Yeah, and so, I guess…
- 49:09Tad Eggleston: But it then also makes me that much more interested in what's next for Michael Fifay.
- 49:14Phil: Oh, yeah. Yeah, I am very excited.
- 49:16Tyler Johnson: You guys, did he do all 50 issues by himself?
- 49:19Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 49:20Tyler Johnson: Okay, so the.
- 49:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, not just by himself, like, with few exceptions.
- 49:29Tad Eggleston: Printed them, had them sent to his house, he mailed them out, or the stores that were getting them, like…
- 49:35Tad Eggleston: It didn't run the printing press.
- 49:37Phil: People that were getting them more than stores.
- 49:40Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 49:40Tyler Johnson: Okay, so, I mean, this is as close to DIY as you can get. Yeah.
- 49:46Tad Eggleston: He said, he didn't physically run the printing presses?
- 49:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 49:51Tad Eggleston: But…
- 49:53Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 49:53Tad Eggleston: Which is, like, the only thing he didn't do.
- 49:56Tyler Johnson: So, I hope that he does not do more, because I like these packages. He did this compact 50, you know, issue run.
- 50:06Tyler Johnson: Of something he did all by himself. Yeah. So yeah, what you guys just said, what's gonna happen next for Michael Fife, I hope it's something cool. And I like that this didn't end with the typical superhero ending, you know what I mean?
- 50:23Tyler Johnson: It's kind of different for a revenge comic.
- 50:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 50:27Phil: Oh, yeah. Well, I mean, it… I feel like…
- 50:30Phil: what this volume did was it… he was able to outdo himself with, like, previously the… the Ochazan saga was, like, an event for Copra. It was, you know, the… the biggest, the high stakes, the… all the interdimensional, otherworldly,
- 50:47Phil: Kirby New Gods-esque stuff going on. And I feel like with this one, he was able to…
- 50:54Phil: surpassed that. He was able to surpass himself, while also then, for the very last issue, returning to, like, the superhuman level, okay, this is what it's like being a person
- 51:05Phil: Who lived through all this shit, you know?
- 51:09Phil: like, it's… it was… it was the kind of thing where it's like, okay, you know, Floyd is gonna keep
- 51:14Phil: Doing his thing.
- 51:17Phil: Until he's the one who's getting shot by somebody… somebody after him, you know?
- 51:23Phil: And I guess where I was going before is that I think that in that, oh, it's open in case you want to return to it, I think every story is like that. I don't think there's any story that is 100% done, no way to follow up, like, it's impossible, it can't be done. No.
- 51:39Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 51:39Phil: You can… you can continue any story.
- 51:42Tad Eggleston: Well, honestly, I guess, I guess, I guess what pops into my head.
- 51:48Tad Eggleston: Cal Penn.
- 51:50Tad Eggleston: Was… hanging out…
- 51:53Tad Eggleston: Forgive who's on a Pod Save America episode, or who's on a Love It or Leave It episode, because Cal Penn worked in the Obama White House. He actually left…
- 52:04Tad Eggleston: A co-starring role in-house to go work for the Obama White House.
- 52:10Tad Eggleston: And one of the things he talked about that kind of, like, struck him is apparently he went to the showrunner and said, hey, you know, I know that this isn't easy, but, like, I really want to go do this, I think it's an important thing to do, and, like, he got… the response he got in person felt very, oh yeah, no problem.
- 52:32Tad Eggleston: blah, blah, blah, and you know… His script for the next episode, he committed… The character was committing suicide.
- 52:40Phil: Right.
- 52:41Tad Eggleston: So I don't know how you continue that story. I think there are ways… Oh, you fake his death.
- 52:48Tad Eggleston: I think there are ways…
- 52:49Phil: Not necessarily good, but it's doable.
- 52:51Tad Eggleston: I think there are ways to end things. We're continuing the story… is…
- 53:04Tad Eggleston: beyond…
- 53:07Tyler Johnson: Possible.
- 53:08Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, it might not be impossible, but it's beyond, beyond, like…
- 53:14Tad Eggleston: Anything that's likely to be tasteful or interesting.
- 53:17Phil: Right. Like, I mean, to take a recent example from comics,
- 53:24Phil: what's it? Spider- Reign! You know, who would really want to follow up a story like that, where, you know, it was already so tragic and ended so… so finality? But yes, of course, you can still dig them back up, but I think, like.
- 53:41Phil: for, like Tyler was saying, for a story about revenge, all the best revenge stories, like.
- 53:46Phil: they don't actually end, it's not actually over, because, you know, revenge is like a continuous cycle. And so I feel like we got a glimpse of the cycle with the end of this. Right. And that's what felt conclusive for the reader, even though it's not conclusive for the characters.
- 54:04Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 54:05Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 54:07Tad Eggleston: So…
- 54:08Tyler Johnson: I mean, one of the things that drew me to the comic book, as far as the DIY aesthetic, I'm talking about the overall whole series now, not just Volume 8, but…
- 54:18Tyler Johnson: The simplicity of his hand-drawn and hand-colored…
- 54:24Tyler Johnson: you know, I feel like it really alters the perception of comic books compared to today's, you know, very slick digital stuff that Marvel and DC are doing.
- 54:36Tyler Johnson: Right, and so this, this brings me back to, wanting to buy it and be involved in its creation, like, you know, just maybe if they do another round of something, because it…
- 54:51Tyler Johnson: It's someone's legit art piece, and I'm not saying that most commercial, Comic book writers aren't doing
- 54:59Tyler Johnson: Art, but this is… this is more personal, you know what I mean?
- 55:03Phil: Absolutely.
- 55:04Tyler Johnson: And I think it's just… Awesome.
- 55:08Phil: I mean, it's… it's… it's, like, up there with, you know, all-time great series. I'm excited to… to get my hands on… on hardcovers for these and put on a shelf, you know? Yeah. And if… if, you know, Copper 2, whatever, you know, honestly, whatever his next project is, I would love to, read it as it's happening.
- 55:26Tad Eggleston: Oh, definitely.
- 55:27Phil: we're at.
- 55:28Tyler Johnson: How do you…
- 55:29Tad Eggleston: Definitely.
- 55:29Tyler Johnson: how… for you guys, how does Copra rank in… in, like.
- 55:34Tyler Johnson: superhero books like Invincible, Hellboy, or The Boys, or whatever, like, how does Copra fit into that?
- 55:42Phil: I mean…
- 55:43Tad Eggleston: One of my favorite superhero stories.
- 55:45Tyler Johnson: It is, oh.
- 55:47Phil: I could… it definitely breaks the top 100, if not top 25 for me, but I don't have, like, a firm ranking system laid out, you know? .
- 55:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, you cut out for a second for me, but I heard the boys. I think I like it more than the boys, and I like the boys. Yeah.
- 56:04Tad Eggleston: it'd be harder to rank it against Black Hammer or Astro City?
- 56:11Phil: I think…
- 56:13Tyler Johnson: I think… yeah, exactly.
- 56:15Phil: It might… it might be able… I mean, for me, just because Black Hammer isn't… isn't… I know you guys have read a lot more and loved it a lot more. It's definitely… I enjoyed it more than that, and I would even… I would even say I might put it above Astro City, you know? Like, I'd have.
- 56:29Tyler Johnson: No.
- 56:31Tad Eggleston: I mean, for me, it's definitely enough in the argument that I, like.
- 56:38Tad Eggleston: I wouldn't be interested in, in, like, defending it as worse than Astro City.
- 56:44Phil: Orphan.
- 56:45Tad Eggleston: better than Astro City.
- 56:47Tyler Johnson: to this.
- 56:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 56:49Tyler Johnson: Over everything that we've read, Ted, everything you've introduced me to, I will say that Astro City has been the… my favorite, the most, that's resonated with me, that kind of stuff. Although Concrete came close, that's… that's pretty.
- 57:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 57:04Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 57:05Tyler Johnson: But, this.
- 57:06Tad Eggleston: And in some ways, I think this has almost as much…
- 57:09Tad Eggleston: similarity to concrete. Yeah. It's very stripped down, it's very personal.
- 57:14Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 57:15Tyler Johnson: It feels…
- 57:16Phil: It's ultra-violent, instead of ultra-pensive.
- 57:19Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 57:22Tad Eggleston: But… But it's still, like…
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: Doesn't spend a lot of time with the superhero stuff.
- 57:32Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 57:33Tad Eggleston: I mean, the violence of the superhero stuff, but we don't spend time dwelling on the powers, we don't spend time…
- 57:41Tad Eggleston: Dwelling on, like, all of this… all of the expository stuff that you have in so many…
- 57:48Tad Eggleston: superhero comics. It's like, just accept it.
- 57:52Phil: Yeah. I mean, not only that, but, like, I…
- 57:54Tad Eggleston: Which I'm big on.
- 57:56Phil: I feel wrong even calling Copra, like, a superhero book, just because it's like, these are definitely not heroes, you know?
- 58:03Tyler Johnson: Okay, a super-powered book? I don't know.
- 58:06Phil: I mean, I don't know if I… Looks like.
- 58:08Tad Eggleston: Totally agree with that.
- 58:10Phil: I mean, it fits in the genre. It 100% fits in the genre as communicating with it. I'm just talking.
- 58:15Tyler Johnson: Die Heroes, I guess, you know.
- 58:17Phil: Yeah, I mean, calling it anything else, but I mean, like, it's one of those things where it is a superhero book, but there are no superheroes in the book, you know? Like, it's.
- 58:26Tad Eggleston: It's like…
- 58:26Phil: all villains.
- 58:28Tyler Johnson: Oops, all villains, I like that.
- 58:30Tad Eggleston: But, but, I mean, like, how are we now defining our superheroes?
- 58:34Phil: I mean, people with powers and funny costumes.
- 58:38Phil: So yeah, that's why I'm saying, if it's the genre, it just lacks the heroes.
- 58:43Tyler Johnson: Got it. Yeah, you're right. But it's not… it's not…
- 58:46Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I buy the idea that weir is not a hero, or.
- 58:53Phil: He's a murderer! He kills people in cold blood! He strangled a dude and buried him…
- 58:58Phil: When, you know, like, In my head… They're not good people.
- 59:02Tyler Johnson: In my head, I pronounced it WER.
- 59:05Phil: We're… No.
- 59:06Tyler Johnson: We're… Yeah.
- 59:08Tyler Johnson: Lori's… yeah, and…
- 59:11Tyler Johnson: So…
- 59:11Tad Eggleston: I mean, but, like… So, who is a superhero, if all it takes is killing one?
- 59:19Phil: Well, that's… what do you mean by… that's what I'm saying, is that I don't think there's any, like, heroes in this book, you know?
- 59:26Tad Eggleston: No, I mean, period, not just in this book. Period.
- 59:29Phil: Oh, I mean, that's… that's…
- 59:31Phil: that's tough, because I don't… I mean, and that's where, again, I think if you're gonna be a superhero and call someone a superhero.
- 59:37Phil: murder should, generally speaking, be off the table. Like, once… once that's, like, normalized and accepted, it's like, okay, I don't know about…
- 59:45Tad Eggleston: But…
- 59:46Tyler Johnson: Wolverine's not… Wolverine's not a hero to you.
- 59:49Phil: Well, he's interesting in the universe, but, like, he himself, like, it's…
- 59:53Tad Eggleston: But so, but here's my question, like, I mean, I think Daredevil has… Killed at this point.
- 1:00:00Tyler Johnson: Yeah, but like…
- 1:00:01Tad Eggleston: when he saved… Bullseye, was that a heroic act?
- 1:00:08Phil: No, and that's what makes Daredevil interesting, and I'm not saying that, like.
- 1:00:12Phil: one murder makes him a villain, you know? But… it's… I think the way we're killed the guy is pretty villainous. It's not… it's pretty… it's pretty psycho-killer. It's not…
- 1:00:25Tad Eggleston: He's also a pretty bad guy.
- 1:00:26Phil: He was, exactly, but that's, that's, that's kind of it, is that, like, it's…
- 1:00:34Phil: The way that the violence is portrayed is not heroic.
- 1:00:39Phil: In the book. That's… that's the way I'd put it. And it's one of the.
- 1:00:43Tad Eggleston: See, and this is where, like, I would totally get behind an argument that there's no such thing as heroic violence.
- 1:00:53Tyler Johnson: That's why I called it revenge, because, you know, it is…
- 1:00:58Tyler Johnson: it is more visceral than just, like, a hero that has to kill, because there's no other options. Right, right. It is much more emotional, it's more real life, it is more…
- 1:01:08Tad Eggleston: Right. Because among other things, I, like, refuse to believe that there hasn't been collateral damage in any of Superman's fights.
- 1:01:18Phil: There absolutely has, you know? And I guess from there, it's that, like.
- 1:01:23Phil: part of the difficulty in… in looking at any, like, Marvel or DC superhero as either, you know, oh, are they good or bad, is the shifting nature of continuity, you know, and the way that
- 1:01:37Phil: their personalities change so drastically over time that it's almost like different eras feel like different types of what have you's. You know. But, like, I also do think that… that…
- 1:01:52Phil: in portraying, like, an action hero type character, for them to be, like, a superhero, I think that the defining trait is when they're more concerned with saving people than…
- 1:02:04Phil: beating somebody up, you know? And I think that a lot of the current trend of superheroes has leaned more on that dark and morally ambiguous stuff, and it's… it can be interesting when it's done well, Daredevil case in point, but I don't think it should be, like, the baseline metric that everyone is judged by on heroics.
- 1:02:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:02:26Tyler Johnson: What's Ted looking up? He's got his phone out, people.
- 1:02:28Phil: He's got a charm.
- 1:02:29Tad Eggleston: Responding to a text.
- 1:02:30Phil: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:31Tyler Johnson: Oh, God, he's ready.
- 1:02:32Phil: He's ready to go to one person.
- 1:02:33Tyler Johnson: show…
- 1:02:34Phil: He's ready now.
- 1:02:34Tad Eggleston: show related.
- 1:02:36Tyler Johnson: He's not… It's show-related. Would you like to share with the class? Had?
- 1:02:42Phil: Little teaser.
- 1:02:43Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:02:44Tad Eggleston: I, I, I mean, it's, it's, it's the Saga Book Club thread.
- 1:02:48Tyler Johnson: Okay. Well, hey, so any last words on COPRA? Because this is the wrap-up for all the 8 volumes. We've been doing this for 8 weeks, talking about.
- 1:02:59Tyler Johnson: Well, actually, longer, because there was one where, like, we're gonna.
- 1:03:02Phil: Talk about this. We did Volume 1, and then there was C2E2 for 3 weeks.
- 1:03:06Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 1:03:07Phil: Or 2 weeks, I think.
- 1:03:08Tyler Johnson: Something like that. What do you guys wanna read? What do you guys wanna read next?
- 1:03:12Phil: I've got a couple things in mind. I've got checked out from the library right now,
- 1:03:18Phil: Hello Sunshine?
- 1:03:22Tyler Johnson: I'm not…
- 1:03:22Tad Eggleston: Did you manage to read that.
- 1:03:24Phil: Yeah, it looks really good. I haven't read it yet. It's, it's like, a spooky mystery book sort of thing.
- 1:03:32Phil: by Keezy Young, looks really good. It's about mental health, and and slightly scary kids looking for another missing kid.
- 1:03:41Tyler Johnson: Alright, what was the first one you said? I gotta look it up here.
- 1:03:44Phil: Hello, Sunshine? That was… that's the only one I've said.
- 1:03:47Tyler Johnson: Oh. Oh, I thought you were talking about two different things.
- 1:03:51Phil: That's all we'll look.
- 1:03:52Tyler Johnson: That's all one book, okay.
- 1:03:53Phil: Oh, my man.
- 1:03:54Tyler Johnson: Click OK.
- 1:03:58Tyler Johnson: So, I think that would be a lot of fun. We should do that. See where…
- 1:04:04Tyler Johnson: I'm a train.
- 1:04:06Tyler Johnson: get it into my shop as well. Every time a book is, recommended or talked about on here, you guys, I always go,
- 1:04:15Phil: Nice.
- 1:04:16Tyler Johnson: get it in, because, you know, if people who are listening in my, neck of the woods… Hi, Mom. No, I'm just kidding, she didn't listen.
- 1:04:24Phil: You should put up a billboard for the show in, in Sioux Falls.
- 1:04:30Tyler Johnson: How much would that cost? That'd be crazy.
- 1:04:32Phil: I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:04:34Tad Eggleston: I mean, in Sioux Falls, probably a lot. In La Verne?
- 1:04:39Phil: There we go, there we go, Lover and billboard.
- 1:04:41Tyler Johnson: Hey, if we could make, like, one of those, like.
- 1:04:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, you could put… you're on a corner, you could just put it in your yard.
- 1:04:50Tyler Johnson: Yeah. I'll just make, like, political signs, but it's just for us.
- 1:04:56Tyler Johnson: You know. Best comic podcast on the internet.
- 1:05:01Phil: There you go. Fighting words.
- 1:05:02Tyler Johnson: Yup. Alright, well.
- 1:05:04Tad Eggleston: I don't even know if I agree with that.
- 1:05:06Phil: Ha!
- 1:05:07Phil: You gotta stand up for us, Tad, come on.
- 1:05:12Tad Eggleston: I think we're a singular entity.
- 1:05:15Tad Eggleston: I don't think there's any other podcast that you can really compare to us.
- 1:05:20Tyler Johnson: No.
- 1:05:21Tyler Johnson: I don't even…
- 1:05:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't like the…
- 1:05:25Tyler Johnson: I don't even know what this is.
- 1:05:27Tad Eggleston: The word best a lot to begin with, so, I mean, that's part of the issue.
- 1:05:31Tyler Johnson: That's why…
- 1:05:32Tad Eggleston: It's too hard to compare certain things.
- 1:05:34Tyler Johnson: Because… because it, it, it, you know, the, the, arrogant spine saying the best, I think, is funny for us, because…
- 1:05:44Tyler Johnson: We're not arrogant people, and so that's…
- 1:05:47Tad Eggleston: Most prolific.
- 1:05:48Phil: Where it comes from, man.
- 1:05:49Tad Eggleston: We might be the most prolific…
- 1:05:51Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:53Tyler Johnson: Long-winded.
- 1:05:54Phil: We're… it's going with a… it's going with, like, a baseball…
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:57Phil: We just… if we could win…
- 1:05:58Tad Eggleston: We got some… Like, 100…
- 1:06:00Phil: Had a 300 podcast, that'd be great.
- 1:06:05Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:06:05Tad Eggleston: Hell yeah.
- 1:06:06Tyler Johnson: Well, let's get on to… I mean, anything left that anyone wants to say about that?
- 1:06:11Tyler Johnson: About coping?
- 1:06:13Tad Eggleston: No, I think we're…
- 1:06:14Tyler Johnson: I think we're ready.
- 1:06:14Tad Eggleston: a wrap.
- 1:06:16Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:06:16Tad Eggleston: Ready to ram.
- 1:06:17Tyler Johnson: We hope… well, we gotta talk about next week. Three books, we hope, will be spectacular tags.
- 1:06:22Tad Eggleston: Disploit number 3 from Laura Hudson, Tim Leong, and Emilio Pina at Mad Cave. I have been loving this series!
- 1:06:29Tyler Johnson: I've been loving mad.
- 1:06:30Tad Eggleston: Possibly.
- 1:06:31Tyler Johnson: I mean, holy.
- 1:06:32Tad Eggleston: Possibly even more than… than… than HAB No. 2 from Joshua Dysart, David Lapham, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jacob Phillips, Charlie Adlard at Bad Idea has also been amazing. S has been… is Ted OK?
- 1:06:49Tad Eggleston: Number 4 from Dave Chisholm at Mad Cave.
- 1:06:52Tad Eggleston: I know that 5 gears in reverse.
- 1:06:56Tad Eggleston: A criminal book from Ed Brubaker.
- 1:06:58Tad Eggleston: And Sean Phillips is amazing.
- 1:07:01Tad Eggleston: And I know that at least the,
- 1:07:05Tad Eggleston: The first quarter of Halloween Boy, last of the Halloween Boys from Dave Baker is amazing, because I was reading that when it was time to start recording.
- 1:07:16Tad Eggleston: Couple of manga coming out this week that look really good. Record Journey Volume 1.
- 1:07:23Tad Eggleston: Backing up a second…
- 1:07:25Tyler Johnson: What do you think of Where Does the Rainbow End? Are you…
- 1:07:28Tad Eggleston: I loved that book. I loved that book.
- 1:07:30Tyler Johnson: I, I'm really.
- 1:07:31Tad Eggleston: I love everything from Francesca Perillo and Stefano Cardicelli.
- 1:07:36Tad Eggleston: Remember, they had the robot love story that I loved, too.
- 1:07:40Tyler Johnson: Well, yeah.
- 1:07:41Tad Eggleston: And…
- 1:07:42Tyler Johnson: This is really good. But yeah, so…
- 1:07:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, lots of good comics next week.
- 1:07:48Tad Eggleston: Spencer Ackerman's plugin, Did You Hear About Mimi Green No. 1? He generally doesn't go wrong, so I'm looking forward to reading that. We got some more Brutal Dark next week, we got some more…
- 1:08:01Tad Eggleston: Kill All Immortals next week. Actually, I Should Move In Your Skin number 2 up to books that I know are spectacular, because I did read that earlier today, and it was indeed…
- 1:08:14Tad Eggleston: Spectacular from a… Aditya Biddikar, and Som at Image Comics.
- 1:08:21Tad Eggleston: So yeah, lots and lots of good stuff.
- 1:08:25Tad Eggleston: And you're going old school, Phil, with your giant-sized graphic novel.
- 1:08:31Tad Eggleston: Great Raider pick.
- 1:08:32Phil: Yeah, it's a new edition of Camelot 3000 by Mike Barr and Brian Boland over at DC. If you haven't read it, it's actually surprisingly good. You know, there's parts of it that have aged questionably, but they're trying, you know, that's the way I'd put it, and
- 1:08:51Phil: it's probably the biggest book of Brian Bolin's career, you know, doing interiors. So, for that matter alone, it's well worth seeking out. If you haven't checked it out, definitely go for it.
- 1:09:06Tyler Johnson: Awesome. Guys, it's been fun, but I'm gonna go eat dinner.
- 1:09:10Tyler Johnson: I suggest… I suggest… I smell the…
- 1:09:12Tad Eggleston: dinner.
- 1:09:12Phil: I see.
- 1:09:13Tyler Johnson: just at 5.30, not really thinking it through that I would be hungry. Right. So, anywho, thanks for listening, everyone, and we will catch you guys after the next page.
- 1:09:24Tyler Johnson: Later!
