- 0:14Speaker 2: This is the best of Stugatz and Company live on
- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Joe Theismann going to join us on the show today.
- 0:21Speaker 1: David Braun, the head coach at Northwestern, going to join
- 0:24Speaker 1: us in hour number two.
- 0:26Speaker 3: It is a Think About It Thursday here.
- 0:28Speaker 1: On Sugata Company Live, and we'll get to that in
- 0:32Speaker 1: just a second. There's baseball going on, the ALCS, Taylor.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It is rare where we're doing a show and there's
- 0:38Speaker 1: a game with major stakes attached to it on television
- 0:42Speaker 1: while we're doing the show, but you have game three
- 0:44Speaker 1: of the Guardians and Rays right now.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I can't do play-by-play, but it's 3-2 Guardians over the Rays.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Stu, if you're wondering why I might have a little
- 0:52Speaker 4: bit of extra pep in my step today, if you've
- 0:54Speaker 4: noticed walking around the I heart building here.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Yes, I have noticed.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:58Speaker 4: The Dodgers are down three. Oh, the Brewers, the Brewers
- 1:01Speaker 4: got the brooms out. We're getting ready to get this
- 1:03Speaker 4: Dodger team out of the playoffs. It turns out all
- 1:06Speaker 4: the talk are the Dodgers bad for baseball. Turns out
- 1:09Speaker 4: the Dodgers might just be bad at baseball.
- 1:11Speaker 1: They're not bad at baseball. I mean, they're one of
- 1:14Speaker 1: four teams remaining in baseball. They've won the world series
- 1:16Speaker 1: the last two years, but it's tough winning three in
- 1:19Speaker 1: a row. Do you think they come back?
- 1:21Speaker 3: No, they're dead. If you saw.
- 1:24Speaker 4: So yesterday as I'm watching that game and the Brewers
- 1:29Speaker 4: hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh, I believe, off Snell.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yes, who never gives up home runs.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Who never gives up home runs, and especially to lefties
- 1:38Speaker 4: at that too. They were cutting around Dodger Stadium and
- 1:41Speaker 4: it was going from like Mookie Betts' sad face to
- 1:44Speaker 4: Max Muncy's sad face to a fan's sad face to
- 1:48Speaker 4: Shohei Otani's sad face I just kept rewinding it on
- 1:51Speaker 4: my YouTube TV, and I said, oh, this is going
- 1:54Speaker 4: to get me until however long this lockout is for baseball.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I could just have this moment saved in my head
- 2:01Speaker 4: and etched in my memory, just these sad Dodger faces.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Right. Misery loves company.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And nobody's more miserable than me right now.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Because of your Yankees.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And you're familiar with those sad faces because you see
- 2:14Speaker 1: them every year.
- 2:15Speaker 5: I am the sad face.
- 2:18Speaker 1: You are, huh? So I'm not into the baseball. It's
- 2:22Speaker 1: exciting that we have a game on. I just wish
- 2:24Speaker 1: it was a game that I cared about.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a game where if it was at
- 2:28Speaker 4: like 8 p.m. tonight, there's a good chance I'm not
- 2:31Speaker 4: watching it. But just because it's something that you can
- 2:33Speaker 4: put on at the office, it helps pass the time by.
- 2:37Speaker 1: The fact that we have the Brewers up 3-0, the
- 2:40Speaker 1: fact that we have the Guardians and the Rays up,
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the ALCS. And it seems like one of those
- 2:45Speaker 1: two teams will face the Brewers in the World Series.
- 2:48Speaker 1: This is a big win in terms of negotiations for baseball, right?
- 2:51Speaker 1: Because they can point to the Brewers and say, see,
- 2:55Speaker 1: The players can say, see, you don't have to trade
- 2:57Speaker 1: for Scooble to.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Make it to a World Series. The Dodgers did. We didn't.
- 3:02Speaker 3: The Dodgers are not in the World Series. We are.
- 3:05Speaker 3: That's a big win, no?
- 3:06Speaker 4: So I saw a conspiracy theory on social media, Stu,
- 3:09Speaker 4: that the Dodgers might be throwing this season to allow
- 3:13Speaker 4: the Brewers to get to the World Series. Because then
- 3:16Speaker 4: at the winter meetings, the Dodgers will throw their hands
- 3:18Speaker 4: up and say, eh, we all the small market teams
- 3:22Speaker 4: made it. We don't need a salary cap. Anybody could win.
- 3:24Speaker 4: And then everybody's going to agree when it's the Brewers
- 3:28Speaker 4: or the Rays or the Guardians lifting the World Series trophy.
- 3:31Speaker 4: And then next, once the lockout ends, the Dodgers strike back.
- 3:36Speaker 4: And the Dodgers sign Scooble. The Dodgers sign Jose Ramirez.
- 3:41Speaker 4: The Dodgers sign Mike Trout. The Dodgers sign whoever they want.
- 3:44Speaker 4: It's kind of like they're losing the battle by bowing
- 3:47Speaker 4: out of these playoffs.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Winning the war.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But they win the war, correct. Business as usual for
- 3:51Speaker 1: the Dodgers. Just spend as much money as you can.
- 3:54Speaker 1: They'll be back.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Whatever money they miss out on by not going to
- 3:59Speaker 4: the World Series and whatever money they wind up spending
- 4:02Speaker 4: on their unlimited spending, they'll make it back tenfold.
- 4:05Speaker 3: No doubt.
- 4:06Speaker 1: There's a lot of speculation going on about Jalen Hurts.
- 4:09Speaker 1: We'll get to think about it Thursday in a second here.
- 4:11Speaker 1: What are the details here on Jalen Hurts being out
- 4:13Speaker 1: indefinitely here for the Philadelphia Eagles?
- 4:16Speaker 4: Yeah, so Jalen Hurts is out for Sunday's game versus
- 4:19Speaker 4: the Panthers due to a superficial blood clot in his calf.
- 4:23Speaker 4: The team says the clot was discovered Saturday in London,
- 4:27Speaker 4: but doctors cleared him to play against the Jaguars. A
- 4:29Speaker 4: follow-up ultrasound Wednesday revealed that the clot had moved, prompting
- 4:33Speaker 4: the team to rule him out as doctors determined the
- 4:36Speaker 4: appropriate treatment.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'm not a doctor, but it's probably once you have
- 4:40Speaker 1: a blood clot, it's not good to fly. I learned
- 4:42Speaker 1: that from Chris Bosh and other NBA players. Like it's
- 4:45Speaker 1: dangerous to fly if you have a blood clot, right?
- 4:47Speaker 4: Yeah. To fly back. And like, how was he even
- 4:51Speaker 4: clear to play in the game? That's what me and you,
- 4:55Speaker 4: let's get one thing clear.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:56Speaker 4: We're not doctors.
- 4:57Speaker 3: No, we're not doctors.
- 4:58Speaker 4: We're not doctors.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Put it on the poll. Are me and Taylor doctors.
- 5:03Speaker 4: We are maybe the furthest thing away from doctors. Yes.
- 5:07Speaker 4: But if my quarterback is, had just gotten discovered to
- 5:11Speaker 4: have a blood clot, I'd almost assume there was no
- 5:14Speaker 4: chance that he was playing in the game.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:17Speaker 4: And again, with those assumptions, I'd assume there's almost no
- 5:21Speaker 4: chance that he could then fly home without worrying about
- 5:24Speaker 4: making the situation even worse, which is what it sounds
- 5:27Speaker 4: like happened in Philadelphia.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Now, again, I'm not a doctor, okay? You're not a doctor.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Not medical advice, yep.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I think it's safer to play in an actual NFL
- 5:35Speaker 1: game with a blood clot than it is to fly
- 5:36Speaker 1: in an airplane.
- 5:37Speaker 3: How about that? But we're not doctors.
- 5:41Speaker 4: And now it seems like the Eagles are turning to
- 5:45Speaker 4: Tanner McKee, their backup quarterback.
- 5:47Speaker 3: What an opportunity, yes.
- 5:49Speaker 4: You know who else has an opportunity that might not
- 5:51Speaker 4: have had an opportunity before?
- 5:52Speaker 3: Who?
- 5:54Speaker 4: So on October 9th to free up a roster spot,
- 5:56Speaker 4: the Philadelphia Eagles actually released Andy Dalton. Because if you
- 6:00Speaker 4: remember in that Monday night game against the bears, yes.
- 6:03Speaker 4: When Jalen hurts had to go to the tent, Andy
- 6:05Speaker 4: Dalton was the quarterback that came in. Now, I need
- 6:08Speaker 4: everybody to forget that when Andy Dalton came in, he
- 6:11Speaker 4: very quickly threw a red zone interception that basically cost
- 6:14Speaker 4: the Eagles the game and took them out of the
- 6:17Speaker 4: game almost immediately. But when the Eagles released Andy Dalton,
- 6:20Speaker 4: Andy Dalton sitting around at home mulling multiple offers from
- 6:24Speaker 4: other teams, and now Jalen Hurts is out, all of
- 6:27Speaker 4: a sudden, You hear that? Opportunity is knocking on the
- 6:31Speaker 4: Red Rifle's door.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yes, he is back. Well, he has a chance to
- 6:34Speaker 1: be back. Don't you think other quarterbacks might think, hey,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I could do it in Philadelphia? But Saquon is out
- 6:40Speaker 1: as well. Like, they're banged up that game.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Devonta Smith is out as well. Their injury report is ridiculous.
- 6:45Speaker 3: At this point.
- 6:46Speaker 1: That helps Nick Sirianni's case in the event that he
- 6:48Speaker 1: is on the hot seat. He could say, listen, everyone's hurt.
- 6:50Speaker 1: What do you want me to do?
- 6:51Speaker 3: You know? It'd be funny if Dallas, who.
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know, has the only healthy starting quarterback in that division,
- 6:58Speaker 1: loses the division to Jameis Winston or Tanner McGee.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Tanner McKee. McKee, I'm sorry. Mormon Missile.
- 7:06Speaker 4: So you would have the Mormon Missile, and if you
- 7:08Speaker 4: bring back Andy Dalton, the Red Rifle.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Wow, what a quarterback room.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Just off nickname alone, that might be the best quarterback
- 7:15Speaker 4: room ever. But it feels like if you're looking at
- 7:18Speaker 4: the NFC East standings right now, it feels like the
- 7:21Speaker 4: giants are going to just almost win this division by,
- 7:23Speaker 4: by fault at like maybe nine and eight. Like it
- 7:26Speaker 4: doesn't really feel like a team has to go over
- 7:29Speaker 4: 500 to win this division where you watch the Cowboys.
- 7:32Speaker 4: everybody loves the Cowboys are everybody's darling in September.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:36Speaker 4: By October, everybody's kind of tired, tired of them and
- 7:40Speaker 4: sees their, their very clear flaws. You don't trust the
- 7:44Speaker 4: Cowboys to win a big game. The commanders, you don't
- 7:47Speaker 4: trust Jaden Daniels and Jaden Daniels health to, to stay
- 7:50Speaker 4: out there. Even if he did stay out there.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:53Speaker 4: And then you have the Philadelphia Eagles now who, if
- 7:56Speaker 4: Jalen hurts, Mrs, you know, a month of this season,
- 7:59Speaker 4: that puts their season into question. The team, it feels like,
- 8:04Speaker 4: as crazy as it is to say, that you have
- 8:05Speaker 4: the least questions about is the New York Giants starting
- 8:08Speaker 4: Jameis Winston.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yes, and they have a good coach, but the pressure
- 8:12Speaker 1: is really on Dallas now. It's early in the season.
- 8:14Speaker 1: They're 2-3. The Giants are 3-1-1. The pressure is on
- 8:18Speaker 1: the Cowboys and Shoddy because you have Dak Prescott. You
- 8:21Speaker 1: have this talented team. You have two great wide receivers.
- 8:24Speaker 1: The defense was supposed to be improved.
- 8:26Speaker 3: It hasn't.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But the pressure is really ratcheted up now on Dallas
- 8:29Speaker 1: simply because they have the last quarterback standing in that division.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And so I have to think there is even more
- 8:36Speaker 1: pressure on Dallas and Brian Schottenheimer than there was before
- 8:40Speaker 1: the season even started.
- 8:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:42Speaker 4: And the Cowboys next two games are on primetime where
- 8:45Speaker 4: the Sunday night football game this week on the road
- 8:48Speaker 4: in Green Bay against the Packers and then the Monday
- 8:50Speaker 4: night football game next week against the Eagles is My
- 8:54Speaker 4: problem with this Cowboys team, and I believe when we
- 8:57Speaker 4: had Mina on, Mina made this point too, the Cowboys
- 9:00Speaker 4: made so many moves on the defensive side of the
- 9:03Speaker 4: ball because that's where they had the most question marks.
- 9:06Speaker 4: They drafted a defensive end in the first round. They
- 9:09Speaker 4: drafted Caleb Downs in the first round. Quinnen Williams from
- 9:12Speaker 4: the Jets comes over. Joey Porter Jr. from the Steelers
- 9:15Speaker 4: comes over. Their defense is worse than last year. It's
- 9:20Speaker 4: almost impossible that they could have focused that many resources
- 9:24Speaker 4: on the defensive side of the ball and have a
- 9:27Speaker 4: worse product.
- 9:29Speaker 3: It's odd. Defense is random, though.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Like the Texans were this, you know, all-world defense last year.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And I'm not saying they played poorly this year, but
- 9:36Speaker 1: they haven't really met the expectations. Defense, to me, feels
- 9:40Speaker 1: like a random thing. You could have a defense that
- 9:42Speaker 1: was great one year and have the same exact personnel
- 9:45Speaker 1: the next year.
- 9:46Speaker 3: They're just not as good, right? Is that fair?
- 9:48Speaker 4: But the personnel is better, and you could say that
- 9:50Speaker 4: defense is random. Is it random that the Cowboys struggled
- 9:55Speaker 4: to stop Jalen Daniels, who was making his first start
- 9:58Speaker 4: as an undrafted rookie? right where where the bucks pull
- 10:01Speaker 4: off that upset on thursday night football last week like
- 10:05Speaker 4: the the baseline for this cowboys defense with those moves
- 10:09Speaker 4: that we just mentioned should at least be competent they
- 10:11Speaker 4: don't even feel like they're they're at competency right now.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Right I do feel like there are going to be
- 10:17Speaker 1: quarterbacks like coming out of the woodworks, wanting to play
- 10:19Speaker 1: for Nick Sirianni and the Eagles.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Phillip rivers, like all kinds of people, all kinds of
- 10:28Speaker 1: former quarterbacks are calling up Howie Roseman. And he's not
- 10:32Speaker 1: answering that phone because I think he believes in his backup.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I do. I really do. I actually think he believes
- 10:38Speaker 3: in Tanner McKee. I'm sorry. I said it wrong earlier.
- 10:40Speaker 4: So what if we have a reunion possibility here? Minnesota Vikings.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Kyler Murray's playing great. Howie Roseman calls the Eagles and
- 10:50Speaker 4: calls the Vikings and says, let's bring back Carson Wentz.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Because no one gives credit to Carson Wentz for winning
- 10:56Speaker 1: that Super Bowl that year.
- 10:57Speaker 3: It all goes to Nick Foles.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Even though Carson Wentz through 11 games was probably the
- 11:02Speaker 1: MVP of the NFL that year.
- 11:04Speaker 3: And no one seems to care.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I mean, he's the reason that team got– they were
- 11:09Speaker 1: off to a 10-1 start, I believe, that year. I
- 11:12Speaker 1: like that, a reunion of Carson Wentz back to Philadelphia,
- 11:15Speaker 1: full circle type stuff, and he can redeem himself for
- 11:18Speaker 1: merely going 10-1 in a year in which the team
- 11:21Speaker 1: won a Super Bowl.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yeah, and just from a storyline perspective, that would be
- 11:25Speaker 4: the most intriguing because I don't– Tanner McKee might turn
- 11:29Speaker 4: into a solid NFL quarterback. There's nothing exciting about him
- 11:33Speaker 4: starting right now. There's nothing really exciting about Andy Dalton
- 11:36Speaker 4: coming back. At least with Carson Wentz, you have that
- 11:39Speaker 4: storybook ending for his career where he came in with
- 11:42Speaker 4: all this promise from North Dakota State and then falls
- 11:45Speaker 4: off after that ACL injury where he never really looked
- 11:48Speaker 4: like the same quarterback after that. But we were... I'm
- 11:51Speaker 4: thinking about this now. The fact that the Eagles released
- 11:54Speaker 4: Andy Dalton.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:55Speaker 4: We got robbed of a revenge game spot because they're
- 11:58Speaker 4: going against the Carolina Panthers.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Yeah, but not a real revenge game.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I mean, no one thinks of Andy Dalton as a
- 12:03Speaker 1: Carolina Panther and they're not playing the Bengals.
- 12:07Speaker 5: What kind of revenge?
- 12:09Speaker 4: What's the qualification for a revenge game? Like if Baker
- 12:13Speaker 4: Mayfield plays the Rams, is that a revenge game for
- 12:15Speaker 4: Baker Mayfield?
- 12:16Speaker 2: No.
- 12:16Speaker 1: If Baker Mayfield plays the Browns, that's a revenge game
- 12:19Speaker 1: for Baker Mayfield.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Yeah, but Baker Mayfield, so Baker Mayfield might be the
- 12:23Speaker 4: exception here because every game that Baker Mayfield plays.
- 12:26Speaker 3: In his mind. Is a revenge game.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Put it on the poll.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Is every game a revenge game regardless of the opponent
- 12:33Speaker 1: for Baker Mayfield?
- 12:36Speaker 4: And even though Baker Mayfield, you know how like if
- 12:39Speaker 4: let's say an NBA player gets drafted like 27th overall,
- 12:43Speaker 4: they could list out like who went one through 26th.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Baker Mayfield strikes me as the player who gets mad
- 12:49Speaker 4: that you didn't draft him, but then he also has
- 12:51Speaker 4: to remember he went first overall.
- 12:55Speaker 3: No one could pass up on him.
- 12:56Speaker 4: He's mad that they didn't trade up for him.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Always finding a chip on his shoulder.
- 13:03Speaker 1: A revenge game has to be against a team that
- 13:06Speaker 1: you're most associated with, right? It's like if Aaron Rodgers
- 13:11Speaker 1: played the Jets, it's not a revenge game. If he
- 13:13Speaker 1: plays the Packers, it's a revenge game.
- 13:15Speaker 4: I think that we have different definitions of revenge games.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Well, if the Jets play Seattle, it's a revenge game
- 13:22Speaker 1: for Geno Smith and Sam Darnold.
- 13:24Speaker 3: How about that?
- 13:25Speaker 4: Double revenge game. I mean, what if the Jets play
- 13:28Speaker 4: the Raiders? You're saying that's not a revenge game for Geno?
- 13:30Speaker 3: No.
- 13:32Speaker 4: We're just going to have to agree to disagree here.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And if Kirk Cousins played against the Vikings, that would
- 13:38Speaker 1: be his revenge game. I know we played for a
- 13:41Speaker 1: lot of teams, but it's the Falcons. I'm sorry.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 4: The Falcons come to town. That's not a revenge game
- 13:46Speaker 4: for all the commanders too. I mean, when you close
- 13:49Speaker 4: your eyes and think of Kirk cousins, it's the commanders, right?
- 13:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I got it wrong. It's without question the Commanders.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Yes.
- 13:57Speaker 4: But I think the Vikings would also like a word there.
- 14:00Speaker 4: The Falcons would not.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Gatz and
- 14:04Speaker 2: Company live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific
- 14:09Speaker 2: on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
- 14:14Speaker 3: It is a Thursday. That means we have to think.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Give me the imaging. Think about it Thursday.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You know that segment, Talk About It Tuesday, on Hockman, Crowder,
- 14:24Speaker 2: and Solero? This is like that, but bigger and better.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And 48 hours later, this is Think About It Thursday.
- 14:37Speaker 1: This is Taylor's attempt to counter-program a local show down
- 14:40Speaker 1: here in Miami, Hockman, Solano, and Crowder.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Taylor, take it away.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Quick one here today. Does a players only meeting just
- 14:49Speaker 4: mean that your season is already over?
- 14:55Speaker 3: Interesting here. The Cowboys had one.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Taylor, have you been you were a walk on at
- 15:00Speaker 1: the University of North Carolina on the football team? You
- 15:03Speaker 1: went there for track. Did you ever participate in a
- 15:06Speaker 1: players only meeting?
- 15:07Speaker 4: So we only had one players only meeting and it
- 15:09Speaker 4: was a positive players only meeting actually because we were
- 15:12Speaker 4: six and seven in 2014. Right. The next year we
- 15:15Speaker 4: spent the entire offseason working so hard.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 4: And it leads up to week one where we're playing
- 15:20Speaker 4: South Carolina. We lose to South Carolina in an embarrassing fashion.
- 15:24Speaker 4: We lose like 17, 13. Our offense underperformed like crazy
- 15:28Speaker 4: in that game. After that game, we had a players
- 15:31Speaker 4: only meeting. We won 11 straight games after that.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Really? So it worked?
- 15:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Well, we lost to Clemson and Deshaun Watson in the
- 15:37Speaker 4: ACC title. Then we gave up the bowl game rushing record.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Baylor, I think, rushed for 670 yards.
- 15:43Speaker 3: But the rare players-only meeting after a game. Yeah, just
- 15:47Speaker 3: one week.
- 15:47Speaker 1: After week one. What do you imagine? Mike Tomlin was
- 15:50Speaker 1: asked about this. Brian Schottenheimer loved it. He thought it
- 15:54Speaker 1: was great. I'm wondering how Shotty knew. If it's a
- 15:56Speaker 1: players-only meeting, why does the coach know that they had
- 15:59Speaker 1: a meeting? But we digress here. What do you imagine
- 16:03Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin's response was to the Cowboys having a players-only
- 16:07Speaker 1: meeting five weeks into the season?
- 16:09Speaker 4: If I know Mike Tomlin like I think I know
- 16:11Speaker 4: Mike Tomlin, there's no way that he could enjoy a
- 16:14Speaker 4: players-only meeting.
- 16:15Speaker 1: His quote was, I think you are dead. But it
- 16:22Speaker 1: worked for you. It worked for Carolina. I mean, you
- 16:25Speaker 1: reeled off 11 straight until you met Deshaun Watson.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it was kind of a situation like, like in
- 16:31Speaker 4: the water boy, when Rob Shiner was like, Oh no,
- 16:33Speaker 4: we suck again. When we lost the South Carolina, we
- 16:36Speaker 4: had that panic internally for like five seconds. Like, Oh no,
- 16:40Speaker 4: like this might be another year that ends with us
- 16:42Speaker 4: losing in the quick lane bowl to Rutgers.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Yes.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Which is how the previous season ended.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Right. Well, six and seven.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Yes.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yes.
- 16:49Speaker 4: We got to Detroit and we lost the Rutgers.
- 16:52Speaker 3: That's the prize. We're going six and seven Rutgers. It's
- 16:54Speaker 3: a meaningless bowl.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Merry Christmas in a Detroit hotel. Then we bounced back
- 17:02Speaker 4: 11 straight.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Do you wonder, like, did any of the players tell
- 17:06Speaker 1: your coach that they had a players only meeting?
- 17:08Speaker 4: So coaches are aware of players only meetings. They're just
- 17:10Speaker 4: not allowed to be in them.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 17:12Speaker 1: This seemed like a limited players only meeting, like just
- 17:15Speaker 1: the leaders. And I'm wondering who the leak is on
- 17:17Speaker 1: the Cowboys.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Who cares?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson company
- 17:26Speaker 2: live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Pacific.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Before we get to why Mikey A is insanely jealous,
- 17:36Speaker 1: let's rank the games for the weekend, NFL and college.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Give me the music, please.
- 17:40Speaker 4: So I'll start us off with college football.
- 17:47Speaker 3: All right. Mikey doesn't love the NFL slate.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I mean....
- 17:52Speaker 3: It's a tough one.
- 17:53Speaker 7: Listen, keep behind the curtain.
- 17:55Speaker 8: If my shtick wasn't just doing the NFL here, I'd
- 17:58Speaker 8: probably put a lot more college games on this list
- 18:01Speaker 8: this week than I normally do.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Luckily, my shtick is whatever I want it to be,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and I'm just going to bounce back and forth, okay?
- 18:07Speaker 4: My number five game of the week in college football.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Alabama versus Tennessee. Great rivalry game.
- 18:15Speaker 7: That's number five.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Terrible rivalry name. The third Saturday in October. That is
- 18:21Speaker 4: so lazy for how good these two programs are. But Tennessee,
- 18:26Speaker 4: it's George McIntyre starting over Faison Brandon. They've replaced Faison
- 18:32Speaker 4: Brandon because surprise, surprise, a true freshman is not ready
- 18:35Speaker 4: to play SEC defenses.
- 18:38Speaker 7: By the way, Show me another rivalry that tells you
- 18:41Speaker 7: what the date is.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Because I didn't know.
- 18:42Speaker 7: It was the third Saturday until you told me.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I had no idea as well. I wrote it down.
- 18:49Speaker 1: It's such a ridiculous nickname for a rivalry game.
- 18:53Speaker 3: The third Saturday in October?
- 18:55Speaker 4: It is so lazy. Like, you have BYU and Utah,
- 18:58Speaker 4: the Holy War. You have Ohio State, Michigan, the game.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Third Saturday in October is just like a reminder, like
- 19:05Speaker 4: when your dentist appointment is.
- 19:06Speaker 3: It's October 17th. That's all it is.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Well, it's not October 17th all the time.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Well, this year it is, though. All right, Mikey, your
- 19:16Speaker 1: fifth best game of the week here.
- 19:19Speaker 8: My fifth best game of the week actually got changed
- 19:22Speaker 8: because of some injury news.
- 19:25Speaker 7: My fifth best game is the Panthers at the Eagles.
- 19:28Speaker 8: It was ranked higher until we found out that the
- 19:30Speaker 8: Eagles might be without Saquon Barkley, Devante Adams, and now
- 19:34Speaker 8: definitely without Jalen hurts.
- 19:38Speaker 7: At this point, I'm just looking at the Panthers.
- 19:40Speaker 8: Like if you can't beat the Eagles team like this,
- 19:43Speaker 8: then you just can't win.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yes, but you never know with the Panthers. That's the
- 19:47Speaker 1: beautiful thing about the Carolina Panthers.
- 19:48Speaker 4: You never know what Panthers. team is getting on that
- 19:51Speaker 4: field and that's the.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Beauty in them who is the Eagles backup Tanner McKee
- 19:57Speaker 1: oh that guy he's got an opportunity I mean listen
- 20:01Speaker 1: the backup quarterback's the most popular guy on the team
- 20:03Speaker 1: in Philadelphia takes on a whole new meaning this guy
- 20:07Speaker 1: has a good game and beats Bryce Young he'll be
- 20:09Speaker 1: the most popular guy in Philadelphia look at Nick Foles
- 20:12Speaker 1: I think.
- 20:12Speaker 4: There are certain parts of the Philadelphia fan base that
- 20:15Speaker 4: is rooting against Tanner McKee this week because they know
- 20:18Speaker 4: if Jalen Hurts just comes back next week okay Tanner
- 20:22Speaker 4: McKee stunk this week we move on if Tanner McKee
- 20:25Speaker 4: is even slightly good yes this is something that could
- 20:28Speaker 4: tear apart that locker room very.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Fast right plus it'll always be hanging over him right
- 20:32Speaker 1: plus the fan base doesn't want nick sirianni winning with
- 20:34Speaker 1: a backup invalidating what a great coach he is yeah
- 20:40Speaker 1: a lot on the line in this game there really
- 20:43Speaker 1: is all right number five for me is going to
- 20:46Speaker 1: be tonight's game Thursday night football, Seahawks and Broncos. I'm
- 20:51Speaker 1: not certain the Broncos are any good.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Why? What do you mean? It's not a great slate.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Yes.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Seahawks Broncos. Yes.
- 20:58Speaker 1: It's a big game for both teams. I don't know
- 20:59Speaker 1: if the Broncos are any good. I think the Seahawks
- 21:02Speaker 1: are really good. They'll be there in the end. But
- 21:04Speaker 1: I'm more interested to see how Denver plays against Seattle
- 21:07Speaker 1: and if Bo Nix can figure it out because Bo
- 21:09Speaker 1: Nix has been dreadful so far this season. So for,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you know, terrible slate, not a lot of great games.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So that's number five for me. Taylor, you're number four.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Back to college.
- 21:20Speaker 4: My number four game of the week in college football,
- 21:24Speaker 4: Notre Dame going to Provo to take on BYU. This
- 21:27Speaker 4: game would be higher if L.J. Martin, BYU's star running back,
- 21:32Speaker 4: was playing in the game. Weird things happen in Provo.
- 21:36Speaker 4: I'm rooting for a BYU upset just because of the
- 21:39Speaker 4: Mike Golick and, I hate to say it, Jessica Smetana factor. Yeah.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Part of me would like to see Jess happy as
- 21:46Speaker 4: a Notre Dame fan.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:48Speaker 4: But it's that Notre Dame brand that I still can't
- 21:50Speaker 4: get over.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Right. Yes. Taylor, put it on the poll. Please do
- 21:53Speaker 3: weird things happen in Provo.
- 21:55Speaker 4: That doesn't come back.
- 21:56Speaker 3: It does. Tough place to play. Mikey, you're number four here.
- 22:05Speaker 7: You know it's a bad week when I have the
- 22:07Speaker 7: New York Jets on the line.
- 22:08Speaker 3: But number four game of the week, the.
- 22:11Speaker 7: Jets at the Patriots.
- 22:12Speaker 8: Jets are riding high over a big win against the
- 22:16Speaker 8: Cleveland Browns.
- 22:17Speaker 7: And the Patriots, maybe Drake May is back. Maybe not.
- 22:22Speaker 3: May? Maybe. I don't know.
- 22:24Speaker 7: Let's find out.
- 22:25Speaker 3: All right.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Keep the NFL music going here. Number four for me
- 22:29Speaker 1: is Texans and Jags. That's how bad the slate is.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I am taking a team that has one win, they're 1-4,
- 22:36Speaker 1: taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars at 9.30 in the morning
- 22:40Speaker 1: in London. Jacksonville's home away from home.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Or is Jacksonville their home away from home?
- 22:48Speaker 7: Good question.
- 22:48Speaker 8: I just find it funny that you have the defending
- 22:52Speaker 8: Super Bowl champions against an AFC championship opponent over a 1-14.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Well, listen, a lot of people love the Texans headed
- 23:02Speaker 1: into the season. I think all three of us love
- 23:04Speaker 1: the Texans headed into the season. Championship defense that got
- 23:07Speaker 1: off to a shaky start.
- 23:09Speaker 3: C.J. Stroud has been good. This is an opportunity for
- 23:11Speaker 3: the Texans.
- 23:12Speaker 1: They can save their season here and get back into
- 23:15Speaker 1: things with a big win over Jacksonville, and that's why
- 23:17Speaker 1: I'm intrigued by the game. I just want to see
- 23:19Speaker 1: if the Texans are all the way back, because if
- 23:22Speaker 1: they beat Jacksonville, then they're as talented as everyone said
- 23:25Speaker 1: they are headed into the season.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Make you a deal.
- 23:28Speaker 7: Texans lose this game, they never make this list again.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Deal.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Deal.
- 23:33Speaker 3: But if they win this game, they could be on
- 23:35Speaker 3: the list for the remainder of the season.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Sure.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:37Speaker 7: Sure.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Okay. Taylor, you're number three.
- 23:42Speaker 4: My number three game of the week. It's the two
- 23:44Speaker 4: teams that are coming off demoralizing wins against the Florida Gators,
- 23:49Speaker 4: where everybody thought Florida was good. Missouri kicked the crap
- 23:53Speaker 4: out of Florida. Ole Miss kicked the crap out of Florida.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Now those two teams are squaring off. You have Austin Simmons,
- 23:59Speaker 4: Ole Miss' former quarterback, now at Missouri. Ooh, that's a
- 24:02Speaker 4: great game. beautiful revenge spot yes.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Uh you bring up old miss uh i feel like
- 24:07Speaker 1: people are forgetting about old miss and the fact that
- 24:09Speaker 1: they have the best player in the country yeah it.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Doesn't help that their big win against louisville looks like
- 24:15Speaker 4: it's getting worse.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Every week nothing like a big win at the time
- 24:19Speaker 1: that gets worse as time goes on put that on
- 24:22Speaker 1: the poll is there anything worse than a win that
- 24:26Speaker 1: feels big at the time but gets worse with time
- 24:29Speaker 1: it's terrible uh mikey you're number three here.
- 24:33Speaker 8: My number three game, the Buffalo Bills, fresh off their
- 24:36Speaker 8: big Monday night win at the Raiders.
- 24:40Speaker 7: Come on, Raiders. I want to see something.
- 24:42Speaker 8: I want to believe you have two losses in a row.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Come on, Raiders.
- 24:47Speaker 7: I'm trying to believe in you. What are you doing
- 24:49Speaker 7: with come on, Raiders?
- 24:50Speaker 5: Come on, Raiders.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Sounds like a bad soccer cheer. Come on, you Raiders.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Come on, you Raiders.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Do you think we see Mendoza in that game?
- 25:03Speaker 2: No?
- 25:04Speaker 8: No.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Okay. Well, what if the Bills are blowing them out?
- 25:06Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Then maybe.
- 25:07Speaker 7: Still no.
- 25:08Speaker 3: All right. Number three, back to the college music, please.
- 25:14Speaker 3: I'm with Taylor. I love this BYU-Notre Dame game. Crazy
- 25:18Speaker 3: things happen in Provo.
- 25:22Speaker 4: BYU has such a great shade of blue.
- 25:25Speaker 3: They do.
- 25:26Speaker 1: It's a great shade. Put that on the poll. Does
- 25:28Speaker 1: BYU have a great shade of blue?
- 25:30Speaker 9: No.
- 25:31Speaker 3: The only blue in sports that's better is?
- 25:34Speaker 7: Dodger blue.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Carolina blue.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Agreed.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Carolina blue. Dodger blue is pretty good.
- 25:40Speaker 7: I don't think of Carolina in sports.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I'm just intrigued by this game because Notre Dame has
- 25:47Speaker 1: not played anybody, and I want to see them play
- 25:49Speaker 1: someone and see how they do once they play somebody.
- 25:52Speaker 1: So I am intrigued. That's number three for me, BYU
- 25:55Speaker 1: and Notre Dame. I think Notre Dame wins that game
- 25:57Speaker 1: fairly easily.
- 25:59Speaker 4: My number two. Game of the college football weekend. It's
- 26:03Speaker 4: a rematch of the big 10 championship, Ohio state, Indiana.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Now this game would probably be higher if I wasn't,
- 26:11Speaker 4: I'm not down on Julian saying Julian saying just doesn't
- 26:14Speaker 4: blow me away because I think there's a crutch there of.
- 26:18Speaker 4: We have Jeremiah Smith. I'm just going to throw this
- 26:20Speaker 4: ball downfield and hope Jeremiah Smith bails me out. So
- 26:23Speaker 4: this game is at number two for me just because
- 26:25Speaker 4: I want to see Jeremiah Smith go up against that
- 26:28Speaker 4: Kirk Cignetti defense and see if Ohio State could avenge
- 26:31Speaker 4: their loss from last year's Big Ten Championship. And Ohio
- 26:36Speaker 4: State desperately needs this game having one loss already to Texas.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Yes, you said normally this game would be higher. It
- 26:43Speaker 1: could only be one spot higher.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Normally it would be my number one game of the week.
- 26:48Speaker 3: All right, Mikey, go ahead.
- 26:50Speaker 8: Number two game, Sunday Night Football, the Micah Parsons revenge game,
- 26:54Speaker 8: even though he won't be playing. So I guess we'll
- 26:56Speaker 8: call it the Kenny Clark revenge game. Dallas at Packers.
- 27:01Speaker 8: Cowboys seem to be headed down in a downward motion,
- 27:04Speaker 8: while the Packers, big win last week against Chicago.
- 27:08Speaker 7: That's my number two game.
- 27:10Speaker 3: All right, number two for me. Back to the college music, please. Oh, yes.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Listen.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Listen. A tradition unlike any other. The third Saturday in October.
- 27:22Speaker 1: How can you leave it off your list?
- 27:27Speaker 7: I know the date.
- 27:28Speaker 3: It is Alabama. It is Tennessee. Both teams need it.
- 27:32Speaker 1: It feels like one of those de facto playoff games,
- 27:34Speaker 1: even though Alabama is clearly one of the best 12
- 27:37Speaker 1: teams in the country. But Bama at Tennessee, third Saturday
- 27:42Speaker 1: in October. We all know what that means. It's a
- 27:45Speaker 1: big game. And that's my number two. A game for
- 27:49Speaker 1: the weekend.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Yeah, unfortunately, no Ryan Coleman Williams in that game for Alabama.
- 27:53Speaker 4: They'll be without their star wide receiver.
- 27:55Speaker 3: But it's still the third Saturday in October, though, right?
- 27:58Speaker 4: Yeah, you could pencil that in.
- 27:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Can you?
- 28:02Speaker 1: All right.
- 28:03Speaker 7: When do they play this game next year?
- 28:05Speaker 3: Do we know?
- 28:06Speaker 4: I believe the third Saturday in October.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It's such a terrible name.
- 28:12Speaker 4: I can't get over how bad it is.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I almost moved it up to number one when you
- 28:15Speaker 1: told me the name of the game. But I'll leave
- 28:19Speaker 1: it at number two. All right, Telly, your best game
- 28:21Speaker 1: of the weekend is? My number one game of the weekend.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Big rivalry matchup this week. There's a lot of rivalry
- 28:28Speaker 1: games for this early in the season. We're kicking off
- 28:32Speaker 1: 3.30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. It's a battle for the
- 28:36Speaker 1: victory bell.
- 28:37Speaker 4: UNC going down Tobacco Road to take on Manny Diaz
- 28:41Speaker 4: and the Duke Blue Devils.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Yep.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Big chance for Belichick to beat the defending, reigning ACC
- 28:49Speaker 4: champions in Duke. This team looks completely different than last year.
- 28:55Speaker 7: You feel good about yourself?
- 28:58Speaker 3: It's a bad slate. I mean, it really is. And
- 29:01Speaker 3: he cares about Carolina.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Victory bell, Mikey. Find another team this weekend playing for
- 29:06Speaker 4: the victory bell.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 29:08Speaker 7: He's right about that, Mikey. They are playing on the
- 29:11Speaker 7: third Saturday.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's not for a bell. I mean, it's
- 29:13Speaker 3: just a third Saturday in October. That's all it is.
- 29:16Speaker 4: That game with Tennessee and Alabama, it's known for whoever
- 29:19Speaker 4: wins gets to smoke cigars on it. Have worked that
- 29:22Speaker 4: into the rivalry name instead of just listing out when the.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Game is being played. How exactly would you work that
- 29:29Speaker 3: into the name of the rivalry game?
- 29:30Speaker 4: The Cigar Bowl.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Done. Good answer.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Quick.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I'm proud of you. I mean, it's like you wanted
- 29:38Speaker 1: me to ask you that question because... you had the
- 29:40Speaker 1: answer and i fell for it i walked right into
- 29:43Speaker 1: it jesus all right so duke carolina for taylor mikey
- 29:47Speaker 1: what do you have Number.
- 29:49Speaker 8: One game, it's tonight, Seattle at Denver. I don't know
- 29:52Speaker 8: how Stu had this. This is two teams that we
- 29:56Speaker 8: expect to be there at the end. JSN has no
- 29:59Speaker 8: injury designation. I'm higher on both of these quarterbacks than
- 30:03Speaker 8: most of you. I'm expecting– the only thing I don't
- 30:06Speaker 8: like is that it's Thursday.
- 30:08Speaker 7: Otherwise, this would easily just be the game.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Of the week.
- 30:11Speaker 3: All right, let's go.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I was laughing all afternoon after Kirk Herbstreit told us–
- 30:17Speaker 1: that he shows up to these games and NFL players
- 30:19Speaker 1: are limping around and Kirk's walking fine.
- 30:21Speaker 5: He's like, hey, guys.
- 30:24Speaker 1: The visual of that just made me laugh. Number one
- 30:29Speaker 1: for me, back to college.
- 30:31Speaker 3: It is simple. It is Ohio State at Indiana, Cignetti
- 30:37Speaker 3: Day School.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I'm just interested to see if Indiana can keep this
- 30:41Speaker 1: thing going, man. Ohio State needs the game. I think
- 30:43Speaker 1: that is a big factor for this game. Ohio State
- 30:46Speaker 1: cannot afford to lose again. Indiana can't afford a loss here,
- 30:51Speaker 1: and therefore I think Ohio State is going to have
- 30:54Speaker 1: more pressure on them, but I think that pressure is good,
- 30:56Speaker 1: and I think Ohio State wins the game. I just, listen,
- 30:59Speaker 1: I have Cignetti fatigue. I want to see somebody beat
- 31:02Speaker 1: him and beat him badly on his home field, and
- 31:04Speaker 1: I hope it's Ryan Day and Ohio State.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Because I like Ryan Day. How about that?
- 31:08Speaker 4: Really? You have this game higher than watching Billy Edwards Jr.
- 31:10Speaker 4: travel to Wallace Wade Stadium? You know, after week one,
- 31:13Speaker 4: you said he looked like Tom Brady.
- 31:14Speaker 3: You did.
- 31:15Speaker 4: Yeah, he couldn't look further from Tom Brady right now.
- 31:17Speaker 4: I think I got to get my odds checked.
- 31:20Speaker 3: It was a good week one, though. It was. Yes.
- 31:23Speaker 3: You were excited for it. Mikey. that concludes the top
- 31:27Speaker 3: five games of the week. Thank you.
- 31:29Speaker 1: You can keep the music going if you want, because
- 31:30Speaker 1: we're going to talk about Mikey age, jealousy. What is
- 31:33Speaker 1: going on here with you and your wife? Why are you,
- 31:35Speaker 1: why are you jealous? How many years have you guys
- 31:37Speaker 1: been married?
- 31:38Speaker 6: 11.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 31:40Speaker 8: 11 years. And, and frankly, she, she, I came home
- 31:46Speaker 8: last night from bowling and she was in bed and
- 31:49Speaker 8: I was watching the, I was watching the baseball game. Yeah.
- 31:53Speaker 7: And she said, what's going on in the baseball game.
- 31:55Speaker 7: And I said, I can't believe it. Brewers are winning.
- 31:59Speaker 7: She said, yeah, it's a conspiracy.
- 32:02Speaker 6: I said, what?
- 32:03Speaker 7: She goes, yeah, it's a conspiracy.
- 32:05Speaker 8: They want the brewers to win so that a small
- 32:09Speaker 8: market team wins.
- 32:10Speaker 7: I said, where did you hear that? She said, oh,
- 32:13Speaker 7: I saw it on Instagram. Somebody had a hot take.
- 32:16Speaker 8: And I don't know that I've ever been so jealous
- 32:18Speaker 8: in my life that my wife is getting hot takes
- 32:20Speaker 8: from somewhere else.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:22Speaker 8: Like, she cheated on me with hot takes, which is
- 32:25Speaker 8: kind of worse.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Yes. You would rather have sex with somebody? It's close.
- 32:34Speaker 5: It's close.
- 32:37Speaker 7: You don't give you don't give you don't give another man's.
- 32:39Speaker 5: Wife hot takes.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:40Speaker 7: OK, so that's my job.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Yes.
- 32:42Speaker 1: So what are you thinking? You're saying like, hey, I
- 32:44Speaker 1: give you hot takes all day. I do this for
- 32:45Speaker 1: a living. I actually do this. Right. You get them
- 32:49Speaker 1: for my show or you don't get hot. OK, it's
- 32:53Speaker 1: a great take, though.
- 32:54Speaker 3: And I think she's right. Whoever she got the take from.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I think that person is right, because this works out
- 33:00Speaker 1: well for baseball, doesn't it?
- 33:03Speaker 6: I don't care.
- 33:04Speaker 8: It's, I shouldn't be giving that to my, that's, that's,
- 33:07Speaker 8: that's the equivalent of sending another man's wife pictures that
- 33:10Speaker 8: don't belong getting sent.
- 33:11Speaker 5: Right.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:12Speaker 7: You don't give another man's wife hot take.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but she's not communicating with this person. She's just
- 33:16Speaker 1: stealing hot takes and giving them to her husband. And
- 33:19Speaker 1: she thinks her husband is going to be impressed because
- 33:21Speaker 1: she has a hot take.
- 33:24Speaker 8: She doesn't have a hot take. She stole another man's
- 33:26Speaker 8: hot take and gave it to me.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Yes, but she stole a hot take to give it
- 33:30Speaker 1: to you in an effort to impress you, to show
- 33:33Speaker 1: you that she's interested in the thing that you do
- 33:35Speaker 1: and talk about every day for a living.
- 33:37Speaker 4: She basically bought you flowers.
- 33:39Speaker 5: Right. Yes.
- 33:40Speaker 8: Yes.
- 33:41Speaker 5: Baseball conspiracy. Yes.
- 33:44Speaker 3: In a vase.
- 33:46Speaker 7: She gave me the flowers another man gave to her.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Is it vase or vase?
- 33:51Speaker 4: Tomato tamales.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Is it really?
- 33:55Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stew Gods and
- 33:57Speaker 2: Company live weekdays at 3 p.m.
- 34:00Speaker 7: Eastern, 12 p.m.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Pacific.
- 34:04Speaker 1: He is the head football coach at Northwestern. David Braun
- 34:08Speaker 1: joins us right now. Coach, you cracked the AP Top 25.
- 34:12Speaker 1: I'm sure you don't care about that. I'm sure you
- 34:14Speaker 1: tell your team not to pay attention to any of that.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Am I correct?
- 34:18Speaker 6: You are exactly correct.
- 34:20Speaker 9: I wish you could have been in our staff meeting
- 34:22Speaker 9: on Sunday and our team meeting on Monday. It was
- 34:24Speaker 9: very direct that if we hear any chatter of that
- 34:26Speaker 9: around here. I'm coming after you. We got to stay
- 34:29Speaker 9: focused one day at a time. But you must have
- 34:32Speaker 9: been listening in, Stu Gatz.
- 34:35Speaker 3: No, I just know how coaches think.
- 34:36Speaker 1: And I know they don't want to talk about that
- 34:37Speaker 1: stuff and they don't want their teams to get too
- 34:39Speaker 1: high on it.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Right. Like that's that's why you tell them to stop
- 34:42Speaker 3: paying attention to it.
- 34:44Speaker 9: You know, I think it's one of those things that's
- 34:46Speaker 9: really important in the offseason, even leading into the season, like.
- 34:51Speaker 9: we do want to dream big and we do want
- 34:53Speaker 9: to redefine the expectations around this program. This program has
- 34:57Speaker 9: achieved so many things, but going back to coach Barnett,
- 35:01Speaker 9: you know, when, when he, you know, coined the phrase
- 35:03Speaker 9: of expect victory, people looked at him like he was crazy,
- 35:06Speaker 9: but look what that, that team did and look how
- 35:09Speaker 9: that's built over the years with coach walk and with
- 35:11Speaker 9: coach fits and the program has achieved great things, but
- 35:15Speaker 9: there's also this opportunity to, to redefine our expectations.
- 35:19Speaker 6: But when you get into the season, it's so.
- 35:21Speaker 9: Critical that us as coaches and players are just focused.
- 35:25Speaker 6: On our habits, our preparation, our process.
- 35:28Speaker 9: And I know that's so cliche, but it matters because
- 35:30Speaker 9: it's really easy to get distracted for sure.
- 35:33Speaker 1: What has Chip Kelly, who is your offensive coordinator, what
- 35:36Speaker 1: has he meant to that program, to you as a
- 35:39Speaker 1: head coach, to have another guy with head coaching experience
- 35:42Speaker 1: on the sidelines and a lot of it, both at
- 35:44Speaker 1: college and the NFL?
- 35:45Speaker 3: What has he meant to you guys and that program?
- 35:49Speaker 6: He's been transformational.
- 35:51Speaker 9: And going through that process and making a decision to
- 35:53Speaker 9: make a change And just looking at Northwestern offense over
- 35:58Speaker 9: the last decade, you know, we knew that we needed
- 36:02Speaker 9: some form of transformational change. And Chip is all of
- 36:07Speaker 9: that in terms of his understanding of the offensive structure
- 36:13Speaker 9: and how to maximize the talent that you have on
- 36:15Speaker 9: a roster. And to be honest with you, there was
- 36:19Speaker 9: no doubt in my mind as Chip and I had
- 36:21Speaker 9: conversations that he was the right person at the right
- 36:23Speaker 9: time to lead our offense.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 36:25Speaker 9: What I didn't fully understand is how much he was
- 36:30Speaker 9: going to help me as a head coach. I knew
- 36:33Speaker 9: he had extensive head coaching experience, but it was really
- 36:36Speaker 9: the first time in my career as a head coach
- 36:38Speaker 9: that I have someone on staff that I really can
- 36:41Speaker 9: bounce ideas off of and we can have really healthy
- 36:44Speaker 9: collaboration and conversation around The thing that's fun for me
- 36:49Speaker 9: to do is literally step in his office and say, hey, Chip,
- 36:52Speaker 9: I need you to put your head coaching hat on.
- 36:54Speaker 6: And he'll give me this look of like, Dave, I
- 36:56Speaker 6: don't want to put that hat on right.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Now.
- 37:00Speaker 9: But he does, you know, and it can be as
- 37:03Speaker 9: minor as like practice structure to things of, you continue
- 37:09Speaker 9: to build donor relations the right way, how we construct
- 37:11Speaker 9: a roster, how we navigate this new landscape of college football.
- 37:15Speaker 6: There's no doubt that, that he's made me better as
- 37:17Speaker 6: a head coach.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Coach, I love college football and you are a great
- 37:21Speaker 4: defensive mind, but even some of the formations that Chip
- 37:24Speaker 4: Kelly brings out, are you like, what the heck are
- 37:26Speaker 4: some of these?
- 37:26Speaker 9: Yes.
- 37:29Speaker 6: Yes.
- 37:30Speaker 9: I mean, I think guys, I have to tell you, like, honestly, honestly,
- 37:36Speaker 9: There have been times, whether it be sitting in an
- 37:38Speaker 9: offensive staff meeting or sitting in an offensive unit meeting
- 37:43Speaker 9: or watching a walkthrough in fall camp where I'm like,
- 37:47Speaker 9: what in the actual are we doing right now? And,
- 37:51Speaker 9: you know, it's there's this this part of you that like.
- 37:54Speaker 9: wants to like rein it back in and box it in.
- 37:57Speaker 9: And the clarity that I've gotten is like, you don't
- 37:59Speaker 9: hire one of the most creative football.
- 38:01Speaker 6: Minds of all time and, and, and box that in,
- 38:05Speaker 6: you know, the, the creativity.
- 38:06Speaker 9: And the fun part for me is like, even out
- 38:08Speaker 9: of practice, like the subtle nudge from Chip, he's like, Hey,
- 38:11Speaker 9: check this out.
- 38:11Speaker 6: You know? And I'm watching, I was like, man, how
- 38:13Speaker 6: do you defend that?
- 38:14Speaker 3: You know?
- 38:14Speaker 6: I mean, like that's, that's the creativity that I love. He's,
- 38:18Speaker 6: he's finding ways to differentiate us.
- 38:20Speaker 9: And, uh, it's a reflection of him, the offensive staff,
- 38:23Speaker 9: but also our players of their willingness to just lean
- 38:26Speaker 9: into it.
- 38:28Speaker 1: I'll get to your game against Michigan State, which is
- 38:30Speaker 1: fascinating on a lot of different levels. I'll get to
- 38:33Speaker 1: that in just a second, but I just want to
- 38:35Speaker 1: go back to a couple of weeks ago. You opened
- 38:37Speaker 1: up the new stadium on the Northwestern campus. It looks
- 38:40Speaker 1: beautiful on television. You beat Penn State. You beat them
- 38:44Speaker 1: pretty good, and Chip really flexed his offense, and you
- 38:47Speaker 1: flexed your defense.
- 38:48Speaker 3: In that game.
- 38:49Speaker 1: That game in a new stadium went as well as
- 38:52Speaker 1: it possibly could for you, right?
- 38:55Speaker 6: It did, you know, and.
- 38:58Speaker 9: I think something I had to guard against, our players
- 39:00Speaker 9: had to guard against, all of us had to guard
- 39:02Speaker 9: against was like this, this level of pressure in terms of,
- 39:07Speaker 9: you know, you're opening this new stadium, the best stadium
- 39:11Speaker 9: in all of college football. You're playing a great Penn
- 39:15Speaker 9: State team Friday night.
- 39:18Speaker 6: And there's so much of you that just wants to
- 39:20Speaker 6: make sure that it goes right.
- 39:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 39:21Speaker 9: You know, to start this this this new era off
- 39:24Speaker 9: the right way. And um, I I'm just really proud
- 39:28Speaker 9: of our players and, um, the staff of you know, we,
- 39:31Speaker 9: we told him, I said, guys, our focus needs to
- 39:33Speaker 9: be on us and it needs to be on football.
- 39:35Speaker 9: Like our job tonight is, is to go win a
- 39:38Speaker 9: football game. And that's where our focus needs to be.
- 39:41Speaker 9: But Stu gots to, to, to feel and see our
- 39:44Speaker 9: students section, like the experience that our students here at
- 39:47Speaker 9: Northwestern were having, you know, as a part of a
- 39:50Speaker 9: big 10 football program and truly like they they're, they're
- 39:54Speaker 9: a part of this team. They, they impact the game
- 39:56Speaker 9: and they've.
- 39:57Speaker 6: Bought into that. And, To feel the energy in the community.
- 40:00Speaker 9: We know this, you know, college football in the right
- 40:05Speaker 9: venue has such an ability to bring community together in such.
- 40:09Speaker 6: A unique way.
- 40:10Speaker 9: And you could feel that. And we have felt that
- 40:12Speaker 9: in these first two home games. And I'm so excited
- 40:16Speaker 9: to see where we're going to take this.
- 40:18Speaker 3: You're getting emotional talking about it.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Just going back to that first game, you were emotional
- 40:21Speaker 1: walking through that tunnel, correct?
- 40:24Speaker 9: Without a doubt I mean walking out of that tunnel
- 40:27Speaker 9: running out with the team um like it it it
- 40:31Speaker 9: felt like a dream it didn't seem real and then
- 40:34Speaker 9: for us to execute the way that we did and
- 40:37Speaker 9: uh you know to feel the energy throughout the game
- 40:40Speaker 9: and come away with the win um you know I
- 40:42Speaker 9: said a post game it's You pray for opportunities like that.
- 40:46Speaker 9: And just to hear to not only hear, but feel
- 40:50Speaker 9: just that the community and the buy in. I said
- 40:53Speaker 9: a postgame, you know, anyone that's on the fence of like,
- 40:56Speaker 9: do I need to check this out? Do I really
- 40:58Speaker 9: want to be a be a part of this? Do
- 41:00Speaker 9: I do I want to show up for games like
- 41:02Speaker 9: don't miss out? There's something special going on in Evanston
- 41:05Speaker 9: right now.
- 41:06Speaker 1: What's the coolest thing in that new stadium? Is there
- 41:08Speaker 1: something that kind of stands out for you?
- 41:10Speaker 9: You know, gosh, we could be here for three hours,
- 41:12Speaker 9: but I'm only allowed one, one answer that, that, that,
- 41:18Speaker 9: that student section is like, just, I mean, they're standing up,
- 41:22Speaker 9: they're making noise. The thought behind in terms of what's
- 41:26Speaker 9: going on pregame for the students.
- 41:29Speaker 6: I mean, it's like, it's incredible. And it's, it's what
- 41:32Speaker 6: we've dreamt of, of just, this is such a unique place,
- 41:35Speaker 6: such a special place.
- 41:36Speaker 9: But for our students here to feel like they have
- 41:39Speaker 9: a place that's for them on game day around college football,
- 41:42Speaker 9: it's incredible.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Yes.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Awesome.
- 41:44Speaker 4: Coach, how do you convince an entire locker room that
- 41:46Speaker 4: Northwestern can accomplish things that people have spent what feels
- 41:50Speaker 4: like decades telling them aren't possible? Yeah.
- 41:53Speaker 9: You know, I, I think it starts with, with messaging
- 41:56Speaker 9: to the team in the off season. And, um, You know,
- 42:00Speaker 9: that's the time that you talk about your goals. You
- 42:02Speaker 9: don't talk about your goals during the season. You talk
- 42:04Speaker 9: about your goals in the offseason to make sure that
- 42:06Speaker 9: your actions are reflective of achieving those goals. But it
- 42:10Speaker 9: also comes down to recruiting as well. Like any young
- 42:14Speaker 9: man that I get a chance to sit down with,
- 42:17Speaker 9: I ask him a simple question. Do you think you're
- 42:19Speaker 9: the right person to help us win Big Ten championships?
- 42:22Speaker 6: And that's a two-part question.
- 42:24Speaker 9: If you don't think you're the right person and you
- 42:25Speaker 9: don't believe that that's going to happen while you're here,
- 42:28Speaker 9: then this isn't the place for you because, you know,
- 42:31Speaker 9: as our team operates in the offseason, there's a mentality
- 42:34Speaker 9: that everything that we do better be reflective of competing
- 42:37Speaker 9: and winning big-time championships. And if you don't believe you're
- 42:41Speaker 9: the right person and you don't believe that's going to
- 42:43Speaker 9: happen here, you won't enjoy your experience here. And I
- 42:47Speaker 9: think that framing is really important just to make sure
- 42:50Speaker 9: you're building a certain level of belief that not only
- 42:53Speaker 9: can we compete with anyone in the country, but we
- 42:55Speaker 9: can beat anyone in the country.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Right. You can also point to Indiana.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Coach, if I told you like 10 years ago that
- 43:01Speaker 1: Indiana would be on top of the college football world
- 43:03Speaker 1: and you guys would be ranked inside the top 25,
- 43:06Speaker 1: you would have laughed me out of the room, man.
- 43:07Speaker 9: What Kurt has done, what that program has done, it's incredible.
- 43:16Speaker 9: But it's also a reflection of this new landscape of
- 43:19Speaker 9: college football. If you're fortunate enough to create alignment with
- 43:23Speaker 9: with your board, with your president, with your AD. You
- 43:26Speaker 9: got the right people on board and there's a certain
- 43:28Speaker 9: level of belief and investment. You know, it's college football
- 43:33Speaker 9: is prime for anyone have an opportunity to accomplish really
- 43:37Speaker 9: special things.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I know you're focused on the next game, but we
- 43:39Speaker 1: had a discussion yesterday about who was going to be
- 43:42Speaker 1: the next Indiana and Northwestern kept coming up.
- 43:45Speaker 3: It was myself, Bear, T-Bob, A-Bear.
- 43:48Speaker 1: We all thought Northwestern potentially could be the next Indiana.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Because of you, coach. Because of you, of course. Yes,
- 43:53Speaker 3: that's right.
- 43:54Speaker 1: And the stadium and Chip Kelly and how beautiful that
- 43:57Speaker 1: campus is, city of Chicago. It really has all the
- 44:00Speaker 1: makings of a school that could have, you know, a
- 44:03Speaker 1: top tier college football program.
- 44:05Speaker 3: It does. Right.
- 44:07Speaker 9: You know, and you already alluded to like right now,
- 44:10Speaker 9: laser focused on Michigan State.
- 44:12Speaker 6: But, you know, taking the opportunity to zoom out.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker 6: Like, why not us?
- 44:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 44:18Speaker 9: And we got the right people in place. We got
- 44:20Speaker 9: the best AD in the country in Mark Jackson. Our
- 44:23Speaker 9: new president, Meng Chang, like he's a competitor. He understands
- 44:27Speaker 9: the value of athletics and football on top of being
- 44:31Speaker 9: the right person, you know, at the right time for Northwestern.
- 44:35Speaker 5: Yeah. Why not us?
- 44:36Speaker 3: Why not you? Right.
- 44:38Speaker 1: It's going to be an emotional game going against Michigan State.
- 44:41Speaker 1: You are coaching against the guy you replaced at Northwestern,
- 44:44Speaker 1: Pat Fitzgerald.
- 44:46Speaker 3: That's going to be emotional for both of you guys. Right.
- 44:48Speaker 3: I know you're tight. I know the families are tight.
- 44:50Speaker 1: That's going to be super emotional for both of you guys.
- 44:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:53Speaker 9: You know, it's, it's, it's, it's one of those things that,
- 44:56Speaker 9: you know, starting off the week, you know, and I
- 44:58Speaker 9: even spoke about it with our staff and our team,
- 45:00Speaker 9: you know, guys, this isn't about me. This isn't about
- 45:04Speaker 9: coach Fitz. This isn't about a child's going back to
- 45:06Speaker 9: East Lansing. It's, it's not about those things. It's about
- 45:09Speaker 9: the game in between the white lines, but it is
- 45:11Speaker 9: important to acknowledge it, you know, because naturally there's going
- 45:14Speaker 9: to be emotion tied to that. Cause you know, there's,
- 45:18Speaker 9: There's relationships there, real relationships there. But I think when
- 45:21Speaker 9: you can acknowledge it and then shift your focus to
- 45:23Speaker 9: the things that really matter, it positions your team to.
- 45:26Speaker 6: Focus on the game. And that's what truly does matter.
- 45:29Speaker 9: But what I will say is, you know, I'm not
- 45:33Speaker 9: sitting in this chair right now with this incredible opportunity
- 45:37Speaker 9: without Coach Fitz.
- 45:38Speaker 6: You know, he believed in an FCS defensive coordinator.
- 45:42Speaker 9: Was willing to go out on a limb and say,
- 45:44Speaker 9: you know what, this guy can do it in the
- 45:45Speaker 9: Big Ten, and that's something I'll forever be grateful for.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Go ahead, Taylor.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Coach, what does make your quarterback, Aiden Childs, special? Because
- 45:54Speaker 4: I remember watching him briefly at Oregon State, and then,
- 45:57Speaker 4: as you mentioned, the past couple of years at Michigan State.
- 46:00Speaker 6: Yeah, number one, I think it's the right partnership.
- 46:03Speaker 9: It starts with Aiden, but the partnership between him and
- 46:06Speaker 9: Chip and then Jerry Neuheisel, there's just the right partnership there.
- 46:10Speaker 9: And the thing about Aiden that I think makes him
- 46:13Speaker 9: really unique and really special is he wants to be
- 46:15Speaker 9: coached hard. He wants to be told the truth. He
- 46:17Speaker 9: wants to be pushed to his absolute best. And And
- 46:21Speaker 9: Chip and Jerry are going to do that, but he
- 46:24Speaker 9: doesn't want it sugarcoated. Like he doesn't want it, you know,
- 46:28Speaker 9: spoon fed to him. Like the volume of offense that
- 46:31Speaker 9: we're asking him to operate and asked him to operate
- 46:33Speaker 9: from day one when he started in the middle of spring.
- 46:35Speaker 6: Ball, there was ups and downs in spring.
- 46:38Speaker 9: You know, there was ups and downs over the summer,
- 46:40Speaker 9: but his level of consistency because he's leaned into that
- 46:43Speaker 9: challenge over fall camp and into the season is I
- 46:46Speaker 9: think it speaks to his competitiveness, his maturity, his humility. And, uh,
- 46:51Speaker 9: you know, that guy doesn't have a C on his
- 46:52Speaker 9: chest just cause he's a starting quarterback. He earned that,
- 46:54Speaker 9: like his teammates voted that and his ability just to
- 46:58Speaker 9: connect with not just the offensive starters or not just,
- 47:01Speaker 9: you know, some guy, like he has an ability to
- 47:03Speaker 9: connect with every single guy on this roster. And, uh,
- 47:07Speaker 9: you know, it's, uh, It reflects in his leadership.
- 47:10Speaker 3: His talent really jumps off the screen.
- 47:12Speaker 1: I would say there were some bumps in the road
- 47:14Speaker 1: even early on this season, but it seemed like against
- 47:17Speaker 1: Penn State, everything started to click for him. And he
- 47:20Speaker 1: seems like he's the most confident he's been since he's
- 47:23Speaker 1: been at Northwestern. Like right now, I have to guess, Coach,
- 47:26Speaker 1: is the most confident your quarterback has been since he
- 47:29Speaker 1: arrived at Northwestern.
- 47:31Speaker 6: I would agree.
- 47:32Speaker 9: And, you know, I think it's, you know, when you're
- 47:35Speaker 9: starting quarterback, models, humility, and confidence, which he does daily.
- 47:42Speaker 9: Like that, that, that permeates throughout your entire team. And that's,
- 47:45Speaker 9: that's what I love about this group. There's this level
- 47:48Speaker 9: of humility of like, we know we're far from a
- 47:50Speaker 9: finished product. We have so much work to do, but
- 47:52Speaker 9: there's also this underlying confidence of like, if we prepare
- 47:55Speaker 9: the right way and we take it one day at
- 47:56Speaker 9: a time, we can beat anyone in the country. And
- 48:00Speaker 9: if we take that for granted and lose that humility
- 48:03Speaker 9: and think we've figured it out, we can.
- 48:05Speaker 6: Lose to anyone in the country. But Aiden embodies that.
- 48:08Speaker 9: And when you're starting, quarterback embodies that. It's easy for
- 48:11Speaker 9: the rest of the locker room to fall in line.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Mikey A., I'm thinking it. I know you're thinking it.
- 48:16Speaker 3: I know Taylor's thinking it.
- 48:17Speaker 1: We have a lot of obligations, a lot of stadiums,
- 48:20Speaker 1: a lot of games to go to. But New Stadium, Northwestern, Chicago.
- 48:25Speaker 1: I'm thinking we take the show. Top of the list.
- 48:29Speaker 5: Easily.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Well, we need the invite from Coach here. I'm thinking
- 48:32Speaker 1: we take the show. We do it live right from
- 48:34Speaker 1: the sidelines.
- 48:34Speaker 3: What do you think? Let's go, man.
- 48:37Speaker 6: You said it. The invite's there. You guys need to
- 48:42Speaker 6: be here. Don't miss out. We would love to have you.
- 48:45Speaker 2: All right.
- 48:45Speaker 3: How do you think Chip would feel if I asked
- 48:47Speaker 3: him if I could call a play? The first play.
- 48:48Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 48:49Speaker 5: You know what?
- 48:51Speaker 9: I think he'd get a big smirk on his face and, boy,
- 48:54Speaker 9: we'd say no.
- 48:57Speaker 3: I think you're right. Taylor, did you have something there?
- 49:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Coach.
- 49:01Speaker 4: There's a Big Ten coach whose son is a commit
- 49:05Speaker 4: to your school. Any worry there that it might be
- 49:08Speaker 4: like a Trojan horse being sent into your program?
- 49:11Speaker 3: A spy!
- 49:12Speaker 5: A spy!
- 49:16Speaker 6: Technically, based on NCAA compliance, I'm not allowed to say anything. What, what, what,
- 49:21Speaker 6: what I will say, what I will say is.
- 49:24Speaker 9: You learn a lot in this chair and you get
- 49:27Speaker 9: a chance to build these relationships. And, uh, my, my
- 49:31Speaker 9: opportunity to get to know coach day over the last,
- 49:34Speaker 9: you know, going into year four now, um, I, I think,
- 49:37Speaker 9: you know, anytime that family gets involved and you're recruiting
- 49:40Speaker 9: someone's son, um, there, there, there can be a unique
- 49:44Speaker 9: dynamic there.
- 49:45Speaker 6: And I think it's reflective of the level of, of trust.
- 49:48Speaker 9: That I have in coach day, the way that he
- 49:51Speaker 9: runs his program and a level of respect, um, hopefully
- 49:54Speaker 9: mutual respect and, uh, You know, you find certain head
- 49:59Speaker 9: coaches in the league that you feel like you can
- 50:01Speaker 9: lean on, And since day one, Coach Day has been
- 50:03Speaker 9: one of those guys that I feel like has been
- 50:05Speaker 9: willing to have real conversations with me and helping me
- 50:08Speaker 9: navigate being a head coach in this league.
- 50:10Speaker 3: You play Ohio State November 14th.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Will you lock off all communication between father and son
- 50:17Speaker 1: during that week?
- 50:18Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 50:19Speaker 5: You know what?
- 50:24Speaker 9: All I'll say is I think the dynamic– you know,
- 50:29Speaker 9: in the day household that week will be a unique
- 50:32Speaker 9: one for sure.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Coach, we're so happy for you. I'm so happy for you. Congratulations.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Good luck against Michigan State. It will be emotional going
- 50:41Speaker 1: up against Coach Fitzgerald, but I know you guys love
- 50:44Speaker 1: each other a lot. So I'm happy for you. I'm
- 50:46Speaker 1: happy for the school. I'm happy for the program. And
- 50:48Speaker 1: I do believe you're the next Indiana.
- 50:50Speaker 3: I do believe that. I firmly believe that. I think
- 50:52Speaker 3: you are the school that's next.
- 50:54Speaker 9: Well, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you
- 50:57Speaker 9: guys having me back on. It's always a pleasure, and
- 51:00Speaker 9: we can't wait to have you guys in Evanston.
- 51:02Speaker 3: All right, we're doing it. I think the Iowa game,
- 51:03Speaker 3: that's the game I have circled. Iowa at home, yes?
- 51:06Speaker 3: I mean, Taylor, we good?
- 51:09Speaker 4: I'm in.
- 51:11Speaker 3: All right, we're in.
- 51:12Speaker 1: We have made promises to five separate universities that we're
- 51:15Speaker 1: coming to one of their games, and we're getting short
- 51:17Speaker 1: on time. We better get on it and get a
- 51:19Speaker 1: road trip together. Coach, thank you. Your game I will
- 51:22Speaker 1: go to. Your game will be there for the Iowa game.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Thank you for doing this, man. We appreciate it. Congratulations.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Good luck the rest of the season.
- 51:30Speaker 6: Thanks, guys.
- 51:44Speaker 1: There's no time like October. The NLCS is here, streaming
- 51:47Speaker 1: live on Fox 1. The back-to-back World Series champion Dodgers
- 51:51Speaker 1: take on the top-seeded Brewers in an NLCS rematch, one
- 51:55Speaker 1: series away from the World Series. This is win-or-go-home baseball.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Every pitch matters. This is the moment the whole season's
- 52:03Speaker 1: been building to every pitch, every swing, every walk off.
- 52:07Speaker 1: Don't let it pass you by streaming live on Fox one,
- 52:10Speaker 1: catch the Dodgers versus the Brewers live on Fox one.
- 52:13Speaker 1: There's no time like October and there's no better place
- 52:16Speaker 1: to stream the magic.
- 52:18Speaker 3: Than Fox one. All right.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Our thanks to Joe Theismann and David Braun for joining
- 52:23Speaker 1: us on the show today. Mikey, what is going on
- 52:25Speaker 1: with college football playoff expansion? We are a, They're going
- 52:28Speaker 1: to do this. There's no question that they're doing this
- 52:30Speaker 1: because there's money involved. But we're going from 12 teams
- 52:33Speaker 1: to what?
- 52:33Speaker 3: What are we doing?
- 52:35Speaker 8: Yeah, so the college football playoff is nearing a deal
- 52:37Speaker 8: to expand the field to 24 teams in 2027.
- 52:41Speaker 7: That's coming for Pete Thamel.
- 52:43Speaker 8: And one of the funniest parts about the whole story
- 52:45Speaker 8: is it says, on September 9th, ESPN and college football
- 52:49Speaker 8: entered a 30-day negotiation window to determine what the value
- 52:52Speaker 8: of a 24-team would be. The window closed on October 9th.
- 52:57Speaker 8: But discussions continue because there's just way too much money.
- 53:01Speaker 5: That's just going to happen.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Just to be clear, that means Wake Forest, Boise State, SMU,
- 53:08Speaker 1: all those teams will be playoff teams this year.
- 53:11Speaker 7: Like you wanted.
- 53:12Speaker 3: That's not what I wanted.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Northwestern outside looking in. No, I was fine with the BCS.
- 53:17Speaker 1: This is not what I wanted. I didn't ask for
- 53:18Speaker 1: any of this. I mean, we're going straight from 12
- 53:21Speaker 1: to 24.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Why? Because it's easy just to double it up.
- 53:25Speaker 4: Yeah. So I see both sides of this argument where one,
- 53:28Speaker 4: obviously there's the money side and the other side is saying,
- 53:31Speaker 4: you know, we don't need more games. We don't need
- 53:34Speaker 4: the product more diluted to determine who's the champion. You
- 53:38Speaker 4: really need four teams on most seasons to decide who
- 53:42Speaker 4: the best college football team is. But the fact that
- 53:45Speaker 4: we're getting more college football playoff games on campus is,
- 53:49Speaker 4: I'm kind of there for, because I think that's an
- 53:52Speaker 4: underrated part in this.
- 53:53Speaker 1: So if that's the, if that's one of the products,
- 53:55Speaker 1: one of the things that stems from expanding the 24 teams,
- 53:58Speaker 1: more home games on college campuses, you're there for okay
- 54:01Speaker 1: with it.
- 54:01Speaker 3: Is that what you're saying? Yeah.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Like, like I think back to a couple of years
- 54:04Speaker 4: ago when Indiana went on the road to Notre Dame
- 54:07Speaker 4: in a playoff game, right? Like the fact that you're
- 54:10Speaker 4: now getting these type of big winter go home games
- 54:14Speaker 4: that On college campuses, instead of, you know, the the
- 54:17Speaker 4: the Citrus Bowl or the Outback Bowl. I do like
- 54:21Speaker 4: that element of college football where I'd almost rather the
- 54:24Speaker 4: entire playoff be. Let's just go to the higher the
- 54:27Speaker 4: higher seated team.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:29Speaker 4: Let's play these games on campus.
- 54:30Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting because guys like Lincoln Riley,
- 54:33Speaker 1: who would be in the playoff this year, can now
- 54:35Speaker 1: just point like when they when he's on the hot
- 54:37Speaker 1: seat again. If he's ever on the hot seat again
- 54:39Speaker 1: because it's a 2014 playoff, he can point to the
- 54:42Speaker 1: last season and say, hey, I made it to the playoffs.
- 54:45Speaker 3: How are you going to fire me? Why am I
- 54:46Speaker 3: in the hot seat?
- 54:47Speaker 1: The point is to get to the playoff, to give
- 54:49Speaker 1: yourself a chance to win a championship.
- 54:52Speaker 3: And I did it.
- 54:53Speaker 1: It just gives coaches who have so much job security
- 54:55Speaker 1: even more job security than.
- 54:57Speaker 3: They already have. And for that reason, I don't like it.
- 55:00Speaker 7: We have to move the line. We have to move
- 55:02Speaker 7: the line from you made the playoff to you won
- 55:04Speaker 7: X amount of playoff games.
- 55:05Speaker 6: That's what we have to do.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Right. You hosted a home game.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Exactly. Yes.
- 55:10Speaker 3: Put that on your resume.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Don't put on the resume, hey, I was a 24
- 55:15Speaker 1: team in a 2014 playoff.
- 55:18Speaker 3: Ridiculous. Have a great night, everyone.
