Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to this preview edition of Burr's Weekly. He's Ray
- 0:13Diger on Derek Gunn. Week number three is rapidly approaching
- 0:17and up next the Los Angeles Rams coming to Philadelphia
- 0:21and Ray, when you think about the LA Rams, Boy,
- 0:23did they put a scare to the Philadelphia Eagles last
- 0:25year in the playoffs until Jalen Carter made two defining
- 0:29plays late in that game to steal the win for
- 0:31the Eagles.
- 0:32Speaker 2: That's true.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I mean we all talk about how dominant the Eagles
- 0:36were down the stretch and how dominant they were in
- 0:38the postseason, and you know, you look at the aggregate score,
- 0:41how many points they outscre theonents. It's all true, but
- 0:46that people need to look back at how close they
- 0:49came in that Rams game. I mean, that was a
- 0:52funny game because when when Savon Barkley breaks away on
- 1:00that long touchdown run, you know.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Where he's smacking his helmet as he's running down the field.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I mean, you know, there's like what four or five
- 1:07minutes to go, and I think that everybody's feeling was, well,
- 1:10this one's over, you know, and everybody starts celebrating, and
- 1:13next thing you know, the Rams take.
- 1:14Speaker 2: It down, they score, and the Eagles have The Eagles
- 1:17don't go anywhere. Next possession of the Rams take them.
- 1:19Speaker 3: All of a sudden, they're driving again, and all of
- 1:22a sudden, everybody's on the edge of their seats and
- 1:24oh my god.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And you're right.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I mean, it was two plays by Jalen Carter that
- 1:29saved the day. I mean, one of them was a
- 1:31sack and then the other one was a pressure that
- 1:34for Stafford to force the throw that wound up incomplete
- 1:37and you hold them and you hang on to win
- 1:39the game. But you know, the Rams, the Rams showed
- 1:43you a lot of grit in that game, because after
- 1:45that long Carter at that long Barkley run, and they
- 1:48could have just said, oh the heck with this, it's snowing,
- 1:50it's cold, let's just get on.
- 1:51Speaker 2: A plane and go back to California.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And they didn't. I mean, they they came. You know,
- 1:55you hit him with your best shot and they came
- 1:57right back. And I think that's what you're going to
- 1:59get this week. I think the Rams are going to
- 2:01come in here and play them tough. They you know,
- 2:03they've had two fairly easy games the first two weeks.
- 2:06Speaker 2: The Texans and Titans. But they've got a lot of
- 2:09good players.
- 2:10Speaker 3: And boy, I was just I was watching some of
- 2:13that game yesterday when they were playing Tennessee, and they
- 2:18were all over that rookie quarterback.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I mean they were.
- 2:22Speaker 3: They sacked them five times and they hit them a
- 2:24dozen times. And they can bring it, you know, they
- 2:27can get pressure on the quarterback and the Eagles are
- 2:30going to have to have answers for that and trying
- 2:33to see if they can get Saquon Barkley re established
- 2:36in their offense because it's this is going to be
- 2:38a tough game.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I really think this is going to be a tough
- 2:40game for the Eagles.
- 2:41Speaker 1: This Rams team, as you just mentioned, offensively loaded with talent,
- 2:44and I'm want to start with the biggest offseason acquisition
- 2:47they made him bringing in Devanta Adams. To me, I
- 2:50still think at this stage of his career, he's still
- 2:52the best route runner for a receiver in the National
- 2:55Football League. Right.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Wow, Uh, he is very good. Good, he is very good.
- 3:02I will grant you that. I'll I'll tell you why
- 3:06I think is a great route runner. And I'm going
- 3:10to be accused of being of having a Philadelphia bias. Okay,
- 3:15I think DeVante Smith is a tremendous route runner. I agree,
- 3:18I think he is. And he has been this from Alabama.
- 3:23I mean you go all the way back. I mean
- 3:25he was this good then. Uh, He's just he just
- 3:29has a very uncanny sense of space and timing in
- 3:35the field. That I mean, the big catch he made
- 3:39in Sunday's game that against Kansas City is exactly what
- 3:45It's sort of definition of what he is.
- 3:46Speaker 2: If you wanted to, if you if you wanted to
- 3:50ask somebody, what is Davante Smith? Who is he? What
- 3:54is he?
- 3:55Speaker 3: You know some people would put on the touchdown in
- 3:59the Super Bowl, you know, the dagger touchdown that puts
- 4:02the game away the down the field, great catch, you
- 4:05could but and he's clearly capable of making that play
- 4:09and does make them.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But to me, this play is more the definition of him.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I mean, his ability to create room and get separation
- 4:18and make a big catch where a few other players
- 4:21could and it's just a matter of timing and body
- 4:25control and anticipation that I just think. I just think
- 4:29he's an extraordinary player. I mean, AJ Brown is the
- 4:32number one guy, and he's the guy most people think about.
- 4:34But boy, I mean, Smith has been and has been
- 4:38from his days at Alabama and to me an extraordinary
- 4:41receiver and just a great route runner.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Adams is very good too. I mean he's been and
- 4:48has been for a long time.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And I think that with the Rams and with McVeigh
- 4:54calling the plays and playing with a quarterback like Stafford,
- 4:57it absolutely maximizes that part of his game. And you've
- 5:01seen it now through two games here, even though he's
- 5:03new there. I mean, it looks like he's played there forever.
- 5:06So he's going to be, you know, for an Eagle
- 5:08secondary that's still sort of find feeling its way. I mean,
- 5:11he's going to be Pookah's going to get his touches
- 5:14for sure. But honestly, the guy that scares me the
- 5:17most coming into this game is probably is probably him.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It's probably Devonte Adams.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Well, you go Adams, you go, Puka Nakula, Tyler Higbee
- 5:25to to add well, and then of course they have
- 5:27a very rugged running back in Kyra and Williams. Where
- 5:29do you start in terms of trying to defend this
- 5:31Rams offense?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Good question. I guess you would start the way you
- 5:40start with most weeks is your pressure on the quarterback.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and when you're talking about Matthew Stafford
- 5:48there at least with him, you know where he's going
- 5:51to be. You know, he's he's not going to hurt
- 5:53you like a Patrick Mahomes. He's not going to break
- 5:56out of the pocket and run for a first down.
- 5:58He's not going to keep a whole lot of drives
- 6:00alive with his legs. I mean, he's going to be
- 6:04in the pocket and you know that. So you got
- 6:07to get in there and make him uncomfortable. Even if
- 6:10you're not sacking him on every play, you have to
- 6:12hurry him.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You have to hit him.
- 6:14Speaker 3: You have to pressure him and disrupt the timing of
- 6:17his offense because if he gets in a rhythm, and
- 6:22this has been true with him going back to his
- 6:24Detroit days, if he gets comfortable where he feels he's
- 6:27protected and he can get in an offensive rhythm, man
- 6:32is he is really really good. Even now at this
- 6:34point in his career, he's really really good. So I
- 6:36think when you talk about, okay, how did the Eagles
- 6:39begin playing attacking the Rams offense? To me, I think
- 6:43the key is it begins with getting pressure on Matthew Stafford.
- 6:46Speaker 1: The one thing I don't like about Stafford's game is
- 6:48he has that wind up motion when he throws the
- 6:50football you expect Fangio to download more blitz is knowing
- 6:53that Stafford holds the ball maybe a second or a
- 6:56francion of a second longer than most quarterbacks who get
- 6:59in a rhythm them offensively.
- 7:01Speaker 3: That's something that people have talked about for a long time,
- 7:05and I'm sure that Listen Vic has played against him
- 7:09a lot of times, so he knows how to go
- 7:12about that. But I think McVeigh is a really smart
- 7:17coach and a really good play designer, and in a
- 7:23lot of ways, I think Stafford it was almost the
- 7:25perfect marriage, you know, because Stafford needed a fresh start
- 7:29out after Detroit, and he came to a good situation
- 7:33Los Angeles, a team that was built to kind of
- 7:35win now with an offensive coach who's really good and
- 7:38there's a really good sense of how the complete passing
- 7:42game works. And with Stafford, he has a quarterback that
- 7:45has a tremendous understanding of that and the patience to
- 7:49stay in the pocket and a guy who still to
- 7:51this day throws a sweetball downfield. So what you have
- 7:55to do is as a defensive team, you have to
- 7:59get in there and get pressure on him and don't
- 8:02let him fall and find that rhythm. You have to
- 8:05keep him out of sink and keep him trying to
- 8:08trying to sustain because once he gets comfortable and once
- 8:11he gets into a rhythm throwing, especially to these receivers,
- 8:15you could be in for a long.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Day, you know.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And of course McVeigh, like Nick Sirianni, has won at
- 8:19Super Bowl as well. Do you think McVeigh is one
- 8:22of the best and most innovative offensive minds in the
- 8:25game today.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yes, I do, I really do. I think he is
- 8:30very very good. I mean if you look at if
- 8:34you look at the the overall design of their passing game,
- 8:40it works. Everything works kind of together. You know, one
- 8:44thing sets up another, and McVeigh is very good at
- 8:48establishing and maintaining a rhythm throughout the game. I mean,
- 8:53he's when his team is clicking, when his rams are clicking,
- 8:57and he's calling the place. There there's a real pay
- 9:01They play the game at their pace and it's not
- 9:04it's not Chip Kelly like it never it never appears hurried,
- 9:08but it's just it's just at a vert. It's it
- 9:10they're you're playing the game as a defense, you always
- 9:13feel like you're playing at their pace. Yes, you're playing
- 9:16this is the way they want to play.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And it's a very uncomfortable position to be in defensively.
- 9:21Speaker 1: UH.
- 9:22Speaker 3: But McVeigh is a guy who can do that, and
- 9:25it was very obvious, especially in their Super Bowl year
- 9:28they're run to the Super Bowl, that he and Stafford
- 9:31are absolutely on the same wavelength. You know, they see
- 9:34the field the same way and they understand their route
- 9:38combinations in such a way that they're that they're they're
- 9:41really good. I mean, if if they get a feeling
- 9:44like they have control of the game and they understand
- 9:47what you're trying to do, uh, and you can block
- 9:51and you can block them, they can just pick you apart.
- 9:55And that's kind of what they did in the game
- 9:57against Tennessee. They got to slow start, but in the
- 10:01second half they just got it going. And once they
- 10:03got it going, I think they scored on every possession.
- 10:05And that's the kind of thing that the Eagles cannel
- 10:07out of half happened Sunday.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You know, as you said, Stafford's been doing this for
- 10:10a long time, but When you look at the so
- 10:13called experts and the pundits who like to come out
- 10:15with their top ten, top five, top ten quarterback rankings
- 10:19across the National Football League, very seldom is he mentioned
- 10:22among the top ten. I mean, guys like Jane Daniels
- 10:25are getting more acculated than a Matthew Stafford, and he's
- 10:28done in time and time again. Do you think he's underrated,
- 10:30underappreciated for what he's accomplished and his overall abilities.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I kind of do.
- 10:37Speaker 3: I kind of do, which is a little bit unusual
- 10:40when you consider when he came out of Georgia, he
- 10:43was the first pick in the draft.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I mean, he was Numero uno in his draft class.
- 10:49Speaker 3: So it's not like he's the guy that came out
- 10:52of a small college, or he's not like he's Kurt
- 10:54Warner or David Craig or somebody that came from nowhere
- 10:59and all of a sudden putting up big numbers. You know,
- 11:01Matthew Stafford had the pedigree coming in, but he had
- 11:06the misfortune of going to Detroit, you know, and at
- 11:08a time when the Lions couldn't get out of their
- 11:10wrong way, and and he took as quarterbacks do in
- 11:14that situation, he took a lot of what I thought
- 11:17was unfair criticism. I thought he was in a situation
- 11:20where the front office let him down, coaching staff let
- 11:23him down.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And as the quarterback he bore the brunt of it.
- 11:26But I always liked him.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I mean I liked him a lot as a college player,
- 11:30and I kind of kind of felt bad for him
- 11:32in Detroit.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I thought he was a guy who deserved a better fate.
- 11:35Speaker 3: And when he when he was traded to Detroit, I mean,
- 11:39there were a lot of people said, Oh, what did
- 11:40the lion?
- 11:40Speaker 2: What are they giving up?
- 11:41Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 11:41Speaker 2: Why are they bothering with him? He's and I said,
- 11:44you wait and see.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I just think at this point in his career, if
- 11:48you put him with a really smart coach, which I
- 11:50think McVeigh, is that going to You're gonna finally begin
- 11:53to see the best of Matthew Stafford.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 11:57who hit a five leg parlay week one and he
- 12:00wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Sounds like Kaplan, right, Yeah, Yeah, it.

- 15:21Speaker 3: And lo and behold he goes and wins a super Bowl.
- 15:24Now there's a whole nother discussion that grows out of this,
- 15:27which is and I've had this with a few people,
- 15:29including a couple of people at WYP. Is Matthew Stafford
- 15:32a hall of Famer? Well, I don't know.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I mean, you can go.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I don't think he is. You know, he's you know,
- 15:38he's not to me. I don't really think about that
- 15:42when a guy's playing. I don't worry about it's a
- 15:44hall of famer. Just you know, that's a conversation for
- 15:46after a guy retires, and you can kind of put
- 15:48the whole thing in perspective, you know, I don't worry
- 15:51from week to week if a guy's Hall of Famer
- 15:53or not.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Is.
- 15:55Speaker 3: You know, if you got to play him this week,
- 15:57you got to find a way to beat him this week. Canton,
- 15:59that's down the road. We'll worry about that down the road,
- 16:02you know. I just worry about the here and the now,
- 16:04and that's where the Eagles are this week. They have
- 16:06to find a way to beat him and slow down
- 16:09this offense. And to getting back to your original point,
- 16:12was where does it begin? It begins with getting pressure
- 16:14on him. That's where it starts.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna go out on the limb and say, I
- 16:18believe this is the week Saquon Barkley finally crosses the
- 16:22sentry mark in terms of rushing yards. Last year in
- 16:25the playoffs, he had two hundred five yards rushing against
- 16:28this Rams team. They're not a big defensive front. Their
- 16:31heaviest body along the defensive line is a five to
- 16:34eleven nose tackle named Poona Ford. Do you think this
- 16:38is where number one? I think the Rams are going
- 16:41to try to stack the line of scrimmage the way
- 16:42Dallas did, the way Kansas City did. But I think
- 16:45because they're so smallish in that defensive front seven, I
- 16:47think this is where the Eagles offensive line gets this
- 16:50act together, man handles the trenches and Saquon goes over
- 16:54the sentry mark.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Well, that's certainly the way it played out last year.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean the regular season game in Los Angeles,
- 17:01he had what two thirty five and broke the club
- 17:03records game, and then did it again in the playoffs.
- 17:08So for that very reason, I mean, they're they're a
- 17:11smallish upfront defensive team, and that Eagles offensive line, I mean,
- 17:16you know, three thirty three thirty three thirty across, then they.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Just manhandle them. You know, they just manhandled them, and
- 17:22Barkley had huge holes to run through.
- 17:27Speaker 3: I mean, you know, the Rams coaches are going to
- 17:29spend this whole week trying to figure out ways to
- 17:31fill those gaps. You know how much you're going to
- 17:33attack with your linebackers. You're going to play a seven
- 17:36man front, eight man front, whatever you're going to do.
- 17:38I mean, they're going to prepare to do it. But
- 17:41I just don't see the way the Rams are built
- 17:44that that matchup in the trenches that they can win it.
- 17:47I just I just don't see it. I mean, to me,
- 17:49it looks even though the Eagles offensive line to me,
- 17:52has not played particularly well through the first two weeks.
- 17:55Me this this looks like a week when I think
- 17:58they can finally begin to a sert themselves and be
- 18:01the play like the kind of offensive line we've seen
- 18:04them be in the past, because I just think the
- 18:06matchups here sort of lend themselves to that.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Well, if they do crowd the bus, it's going to
- 18:10present a lot of one on one situations for a j.
- 18:13Brown and DeVante Smith. Of course, the Rams early in
- 18:16the game against Tennessee, they lose one of the best
- 18:18quarterbacks and othellow Witherspoon. How big of a loss is
- 18:21he significant?
- 18:23Speaker 3: And I think that I don't think it's necessarily a
- 18:27game changer, you know, but he's a good player that
- 18:30isn't going to be easy to replace. And I think
- 18:34with the kind of defense you're going to see from
- 18:35the Rams this week, which is going to be a
- 18:37very heavy emphasis on jam and the line of scrimmage
- 18:39and trying to limit Barkley's opportunities, which I understand where
- 18:43you're going to have to give something away in the back,
- 18:46which means you're going to have to be here. There's
- 18:48going to be some one on one opportunities out there.
- 18:51And if you don't know Witherspoon to account for one
- 18:53of those. Then one of those guys, either Brown or
- 18:57Smith is going to find themselves with some one on
- 19:00one opportunities, and I think that's a chance for them
- 19:02to break out and have a big game.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Who do you like in this game? And why?
- 19:08Speaker 3: I you know, I like the Eagles, But I Derek,
- 19:14I think it's gonna be a really tough game.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I do.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I you know, we're looking around the NFC.
- 19:20Speaker 2: You think about down the road? I mean, who are
- 19:22the teams.
- 19:23Speaker 3: That are really going to challenge the Eagles in this conference?
- 19:26I mean, who are the teams that you're really worry
- 19:28about in the playoffs.
- 19:29Speaker 2: I don't want to get too far ahead, but.
- 19:32Speaker 3: But you look around who right now I would probably
- 19:35say you're Green Bay number one. I mean I think
- 19:38I think they're really good and it wouldn't shock me
- 19:40at all if they're there.
- 19:41Speaker 2: At the end.
- 19:43Speaker 3: But next up might be these guys. Yeah, I think
- 19:47the I think the Rams are lurking, you know, and
- 19:52so I I think I think you have a team
- 19:54that's coming in here to play, is that it's going
- 19:56to be a playoff team down the road. I think
- 19:57they are that good right now. I like the because
- 20:02at home. I like the Eagles, but I don't think
- 20:06it's going to be easy. I mean four and a
- 20:08half to me seems about right, maybe a little generous.
- 20:14I'll say Eagles twenty seven. I think it's going to
- 20:17be like that. But I think it's going to be
- 20:19a game that's going to be certainly not a walkover.
- 20:22I think it's going to be another game sort of
- 20:23like the last two. It's going to be hard fought
- 20:25right to the end, but I expect the Eagles will
- 20:28find a way to win.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I see the Eagles in big Fangio putting more pressure
- 20:34on Matthew Stafford because he's a statue and he holds
- 20:37the ball a little bit longer than a lot of
- 20:40quarterbacks do, because they know if they let him get
- 20:43the ball out of his hands, somebody is going to
- 20:45be open. With all the weapons they have, the Eagles
- 20:48have won two games based on getting breaks going their way.
- 20:53I think that's going to happen again. They're going to
- 20:55get a definitive break going their way in this particular game,
- 20:59and I think it's gonna be another nail biter, just
- 21:01like you. I'm thinking could be like twenty four to
- 21:03twenty three, and it's gonna come down to whoever has
- 21:06the ball last in this game. So we both agree
- 21:10the Eagles will somehow, some way find a way to
- 21:12survive at home, but it ain't gonna be easy.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Mo Man, I don't think so either.
- 21:17Speaker 1: All.
- 21:17Speaker 3: The one thing we haven't mentioned and probably mentioning, is
- 21:21it looks like this is gonna be one of those seasons.
- 21:23Speaker 2: It looks like the Eagles are gonna be playing one
- 21:25close game after another.
- 21:26Speaker 3: It really looks I think it's gonna be kind of year.
- 21:29One thing you got to feel good about. Boy Jake
- 21:32Elliott's got it back. Whoa you know, I mean, and
- 21:36I think every week is going to be. Every one
- 21:39of these weeks, there's gonna be a big kick that
- 21:41he's going to have to make. Not necessarily a walk off,
- 21:46but somewhere in the second half, early fourth quarter, there's
- 21:49gonna be a big kick. And there was a stretch
- 21:51last year where you weren't all that confident, But right
- 21:55now he's back.
- 21:57Speaker 2: In the groove. Now.
- 21:58Speaker 3: I mean that fifty eight that he hit that he
- 22:01hit in the game against Kansas City out in Kansas City,
- 22:06I mean he just nailed that sucker.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I mean, so he's he's.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Got his confidence back, and if you're an Eagles fan,
- 22:11you got to feel good about that.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Yeah, the fifty yard curse is behind him, right. Hey,
- 22:16before I let you go to get away from football
- 22:18for just a moment, you have no big play coming up.
- 22:21Tell us about the play and where we can see
- 22:23it and when, how, why, all of the persons of it.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Yes, I have a play.
- 22:28Speaker 3: I think most folks have heard about Tommy and Me,
- 22:31which is the play that I wrote about my long
- 22:33friendship with Tommy McDonald. That play has been running for
- 22:36ten years amazingly enough. This year will be its tenth anniversary,
- 22:42and we are bringing that play back to People's Light
- 22:44Theater in Malvern October the seventh through the nineteenth. So
- 22:48if you haven't seen Tommy and Me, come out to
- 22:50People's Light in Malvern and see it in October. But
- 22:53before that, I've written a new play which is called Spinner,
- 22:58and it's a play about ice hockey. It's a play
- 23:01about the National Hockey League in the seventies and the
- 23:04wild and wooly seventies, and that play will be coming
- 23:08to the Delaware Theater Company, September seventeenth, running now and
- 23:13it will run through October the fifth at Delaware Delaware
- 23:18Theater Company. So if you want to come out and
- 23:20see Spinner, you have a lot of special guests. Are
- 23:23coming night after night, Duke Q and As, Bernie Paranz coming,
- 23:27Brian Propp is coming, the Watson Brothers are coming. So
- 23:30if you're a hockey fan, I think you'll enjoy it.
- 23:32So Delaware Theater Company, go there, check the dates, check
- 23:35the performance times, and come on out and see Spinner.
- 23:38Speaker 1: You are a jack of all trades and a master
- 23:41of all of them, my friend, I'm looking forward to it.
- 23:44All right. That's going to wrap up this edition of
- 23:46Birds Weekly. We will be right here next week after
- 23:49the Eagles take on and beat the Los Angeles Rams.
- 23:53Until then, my man here is read Dan Jump Derek Gunn.
- 23:55Thanks for handing out with us. We'll see you next week.
- 23:57Everybody now, not bow making, not no, not our
