Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Anny Anne Smitha and welcome to stuff
- 0:08Speaker 1: Never Told your reflection by her Radio And in our
- 0:17Speaker 1: continuation of Pride Month classics, we're bringing back in episode
- 0:24Speaker 1: we did it was a happy Hour that was in
- 0:26Speaker 1: response to one I had done about how conservative news
- 0:33Speaker 1: was doing all these like very intense.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Reports about boh the animals, look at what they're doing.
- 0:41Speaker 2: See being gay is wrong. But a listener wrote in
- 0:46Speaker 2: and said, you know you you made this point that
- 0:50Speaker 2: they made, but there's also the exact opposite point other
- 0:54Speaker 2: people make, which is that you know they're very basically
- 1:00Speaker 2: using whatever piece of this argument in whatever way they want.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Either it's natural in the animal kingdom or it's not
- 1:08Speaker 2: natural in the animal kingdom. And I just I'm really
- 1:12Speaker 2: grateful for this listener for writing in because I have
- 1:15Speaker 2: also heard this too. But yes, this has been on
- 1:18Speaker 2: my mind just because during Pride Month sometimes you can't
- 1:23Speaker 2: escape these kinds of things, right, So please enjoy this
- 1:29Speaker 2: class episode. Hey, this is any and Samantha and welcome
- 1:37Speaker 2: to stuff I Never told your prediction of my Heart
- 1:39Speaker 2: radio and welcome to another edition of Happy Hour. As
- 1:54Speaker 2: I always drink responsibly if you choose to do so.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Are you sitting on anything.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Smatha water, I keep myself had rated.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I have something on warm beer, warm beer.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We are.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Unfortunately, we weren't able Samantha and I to work out
- 2:13Speaker 2: our vacation dates at the same time. So it's been
- 2:19Speaker 2: a bit of a scramble covering the content. So this
- 2:24Speaker 2: one is going to be kind of a shorter one.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I think. Who knows I did want to start it.
- 2:31Speaker 2: This one's a bit all over the places. It's stuff
- 2:35Speaker 2: that I cut from my previous Happy Hour on gay
- 2:40Speaker 2: animals because that episode was going a bit longer I
- 2:45Speaker 2: didn't get to and because Pride Month is coming to
- 2:48Speaker 2: a close, I thought I would talk about it. But
- 2:51Speaker 2: speaking of gay animals, I did want to mention some
- 2:56Speaker 2: thoughts some people wrote in about that one. Yeah, so
- 3:02Speaker 2: first of all, Michelle reminded me I totally forgot about this.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So if you haven't listened to that episode, I was
- 3:10Speaker 2: mostly I was lamenting the facts that this documentary came out,
- 3:15Speaker 2: which I still haven't seen. But it was about like
- 3:17Speaker 2: gay behavior in the animal kingdom, and I was talking
- 3:21Speaker 2: about I had experienced that the backlash that came from
- 3:28Speaker 2: conservatives about that documentary of that's not natural. Animals don't
- 3:33Speaker 2: do that a lot, and so I was sort of
- 3:35Speaker 2: lamenting that, and I was talking about, I don't think
- 3:37Speaker 2: we should compare. That shouldn't be like our benchmark, right,
- 3:44Speaker 2: But I said at the end, it's not that I
- 3:47Speaker 2: don't I'm not interested in that because I'm a huge
- 3:50Speaker 2: dork and I love nature and I love animals. So
- 3:54Speaker 2: I was like, hey, please send in if you've got
- 3:57Speaker 2: like your favorite behavior in the animal kingdom. So Michelle
- 4:03Speaker 2: reminded me there is the book and Tango Mixtre. It's
- 4:06Speaker 2: a children's book. It's illustrated, and it's about the two
- 4:10Speaker 2: male penguins that came together and raised a young penguin together.
- 4:19Speaker 2: If I'm remember correctly, this happened like in New York Zoo.
- 4:23Speaker 2: But it was like based on the like real thing
- 4:27Speaker 2: that happened. But here's the note from Michelle. You asked
- 4:31Speaker 2: for our favorite gay activities among animals. I've come across
- 4:35Speaker 2: more than one story about pairs of male penguins raising
- 4:38Speaker 2: children together. It's super sweet. And if the conservatives want
- 4:41Speaker 2: to use animal activity to decide what should be done,
- 4:44Speaker 2: here's proof that two men can raise a child together.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And unfortunately, I love that you brought this up, but
- 4:52Speaker 2: unfortunately this is one of the most banned books, of course,
- 4:59Speaker 2: but that was really interesting in contrast with a message
- 5:03Speaker 2: we got from Lina who brought up this point that
- 5:06Speaker 2: I actually hadn't really heard. But when Lina sent it
- 5:10Speaker 2: to us, I was like, oh, yeah, that makes sense.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Lina wrote, I had a biology cost an undergrad wherein
- 5:16Speaker 2: we looked at how physical anatomy influenced different animals mating practices.
- 5:21Speaker 2: So having some awareness of how the animal kingdom behaves
- 5:24Speaker 2: when it's getting it's frisky on seems really unsettling to
- 5:28Speaker 2: me too. I've also heard a different take on human sexuality,
- 5:31Speaker 2: focusing on same sex attracting and sexual behaviors. That's just
- 5:36Speaker 2: as weirdly homophobic. I've heard some religious folks make the
- 5:40Speaker 2: argument that because same sex behavior happens in the animal world,
- 5:44Speaker 2: that humans shouldn't emulate it, because God put us in
- 5:48Speaker 2: charge of all the animals, and since we are above
- 5:51Speaker 2: them and the eyes of God, we can't possibly be
- 5:53Speaker 2: gay because of that. It's all very bend over backwards
- 5:57Speaker 2: to uphold the bigotry. I had never heard that, But
- 6:03Speaker 2: when you say that, that makes complete sense. To me
- 6:06Speaker 2: that people use that argument, and it is fascinating how
- 6:13Speaker 2: as you say, clearly either way, it's unnatural in the
- 6:19Speaker 2: animal kingdom, so you shouldn't do it, or it's unnatural
- 6:23Speaker 2: because animals do it, so you shouldn't do it.
- 6:26Speaker 3: And I'm definitely hearded as like, you're not an animal,
- 6:29Speaker 3: don't do that, you're not in the you know, like
- 6:31Speaker 3: all these things. So how does it? And it has
- 6:34Speaker 3: typically come from a conservative side of that as well,
- 6:38Speaker 3: So you're like.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and like I said, I know all of us
- 6:43Speaker 2: have experienced this, but sort of the the way that
- 6:49Speaker 2: the argument is articulated around, men are just inherently biologically
- 6:55Speaker 2: sexual beings, right, And so that to me sounds like
- 7:01Speaker 2: you're saying they're animal like they're saying they're animalistic and
- 7:04Speaker 2: they're instinctual, so that would imply, okay, then we aren't
- 7:12Speaker 2: above animals, right, But then you're also saying like it
- 7:18Speaker 2: just feels that, as I said in that episode, I
- 7:21Speaker 2: can't square this. I just can't square it right because
- 7:26Speaker 2: it feels very It just to me feels that whole
- 7:32Speaker 2: boys will be boys, they're not in control. Feels like
- 7:36Speaker 2: you're talking about not a human, right, This goes.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Back to what we've talked about many times where they're
- 7:53Speaker 3: like women can't lead. Yeah, just both like the scenario
- 7:58Speaker 3: because they're not manly enough, because you know, men are
- 8:02Speaker 3: leaders and they're in control and women are emotional. But
- 8:04Speaker 3: then you're like all these other things like but you
- 8:06Speaker 3: excuse men and also make them seem really really ignorant
- 8:11Speaker 3: and naive, like they can't raise children, they can't be
- 8:13Speaker 3: alone with children type of conversations, or they shouldn't be
- 8:17Speaker 3: expected to clean anything because they're not they don't know
- 8:19Speaker 3: how to do that, like this level. But then which
- 8:21Speaker 3: one is it? And it's that same conversation of like, yeah,
- 8:25Speaker 3: but you're saying it's because of this that they shouldn't
- 8:28Speaker 3: be doing this, or it's because of that they should
- 8:29Speaker 3: be doing this. But yet you're using both like you're
- 8:32Speaker 3: straddling the fence once again, and you're kind of making
- 8:36Speaker 3: making this an oxymoron in itself.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. That's a good point about
- 8:42Speaker 2: like the the raising of children, because in at least
- 8:50Speaker 2: like Western US society, it was very it was perceived
- 8:57Speaker 2: as it still is. We've talked about it many times,
- 8:59Speaker 2: like women do that, men I guess I should say
- 9:05Speaker 2: Western US, like modernized society. I don't know, because we've
- 9:12Speaker 2: talked about now audigenous people that was not the case.
- 9:14Speaker 2: But but like, yeah, they the men aren't really involved
- 9:17Speaker 2: in raising the children. They're more involved in like working
- 9:22Speaker 2: and bringing how money. So it is interesting that, Yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 2: you're also saying they can't do that, right.
- 9:34Speaker 3: But they can do this other thing that's way more responsibility.
- 9:37Speaker 2: You're like that, it's how many times have we heard
- 9:41Speaker 2: the like religious man cheats on his wife. But but
- 9:49Speaker 2: that was like temptation or his like proclivity of just
- 9:54Speaker 2: being a man. That's just what happens when so these penguins. Yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 2: I guess what I'm trying to say is it's so manufactured.
- 10:07Speaker 2: It's so just to keep the patriarchy in place. Whichever
- 10:15Speaker 2: story you're gonna tell, they'll spin it whichever way. Right. Yeah.
- 10:21Speaker 2: So I'm quad thanks to both of those listeners with that,
- 10:26Speaker 2: because I think.
- 10:26Speaker 3: One story I know it's been around, but Keith makes
- 10:29Speaker 3: me go back to the Parks and Wreck episode, Oh
- 10:34Speaker 3: you don't know the way where she does a cute
- 10:36Speaker 3: thing has a penguin wedding. It turns out that they're
- 10:38Speaker 3: both male. Everybody gets in arms and they're like, you
- 10:41Speaker 3: are you know, promoting homosexuality and all these things, and
- 10:46Speaker 3: they're like they actually are mating and are together, and
- 10:48Speaker 3: then she takes into a more open city area where
- 10:52Speaker 3: they can live happily together.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Right. Oh my gosh, I totally forgot about that.
- 10:59Speaker 3: I always think, I don't know why.
- 11:02Speaker 2: That sounds like we just did we just recorded an
- 11:06Speaker 2: episode on but I'm a cheerleader. That sounds like the
- 11:11Speaker 2: most absurd conversion therapy for animals.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Like good luck with that, have fun with this.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, And I do feel like there's a third thing,
- 11:26Speaker 2: which is probably the most accurate, but it's still weaponized
- 11:29Speaker 2: sometimes where it's just like yeah, I like the animal
- 11:35Speaker 2: is gonna hump you. I don't want to say about it.
- 11:41Speaker 3: That's just a whole little conversation about dominance and my
- 11:44Speaker 3: female dog she humps like like it is what it
- 11:49Speaker 3: is a thing from either one.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, that's just fascinating. Yeah to me, Yes,
- 11:58Speaker 2: to me, these arguments.
- 12:00Speaker 3: It's fascinating and sad.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It's really sad. It's honestly bumming me out because no,
- 12:12Speaker 2: I mean I just feel like, like I said, I
- 12:15Speaker 2: am a big I love like nature documentaries. I love
- 12:21Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. And now it's become politicized. I mean,
- 12:24Speaker 2: I'm sure it always was, but it feels like now
- 12:28Speaker 2: it's become this huge argument point that I have heard.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I think it's just a regurgitation because it comes back
- 12:36Speaker 3: again like all these things that you would think at
- 12:38Speaker 3: this point is like that is so outdated and already
- 12:41Speaker 3: been proven wrong. Why are we back here again? But
- 12:44Speaker 3: then we've got this new generation of adults who were
- 12:47Speaker 3: not adults at the time when it was happening, so
- 12:49Speaker 3: they would bring it back without fully taking it through.
- 12:53Speaker 3: So but yeah, but it is like constant, like why
- 12:56Speaker 3: are we doing this? Why are you doing this? Need
- 12:58Speaker 3: for this as unnecessary?
- 13:01Speaker 2: It is really unnecessary. That and Tango Makes Three is
- 13:04Speaker 2: very nice book. Yeah, it's very lovely.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Cute be mm hmmm mm hmmm.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Well, listeners, thanks for both of these listeners writing in.
- 13:16Speaker 2: First of all, cheers to everybody. We love hearing from you.
- 13:20Speaker 2: If you have any more thoughts about this, I would
- 13:23Speaker 2: love to hear them, just your thoughts in general. We
- 13:26Speaker 2: didn't get to the other thing I was going to
- 13:28Speaker 2: talk about, because it's about fair of fiction. I was
- 13:29Speaker 2: just a little worried I go off the rails. Welcome back,
- 13:35Speaker 2: but I've got some exciting updates. So oh my gosh,
- 13:41Speaker 2: things are happening. Things I didn't know what happened. Well
