- 0:33I'm so drunk. Blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:41commentary podcast. I'm here today with a dear
- 0:46friend of mine. The wonderful, Lucy McCall, say
- 0:49Hello Lucy. Hello how are you doing?
- 0:52I'm all right. Kelly, you all day at work.
- 0:55While I'm talking about dr. Of you.
- 0:57So I'm delighted and Lucy. I've got something to I need to
- 1:01talk to you about. Okay?
- 1:04How many times would you imagine?
- 1:05Now you have armed that Brigadier GIF and fired.
- 1:09Ma Direction, several. I'm starting to figure out the
- 1:15made a lot of their hands to family.
- 1:18Absolutely. Why not alone?
- 1:19That and can I just say I'll just don't need to fry
- 1:22complement your way now because your your commentary on my
- 1:25commentaries on Twitter brightens my day, every time I
- 1:29see you. Well, happy to oblige oh no, I
- 1:33love it. I just love that anyone in cages
- 1:36with this at all. I think it is wonderful.
- 1:39Sure. You put a good bit of thought
- 1:40you, listen, and you respond to a lot of the stuff that people
- 1:43are saying. So, thank you.
- 1:46Why? I appreciate that.
- 1:48And, and every time I see that Bloody Brigadier face are
- 1:52consider that a win. All right?
- 1:56I'm sure there'll be plenty more to come.
- 1:58I have. Absolutely.
- 1:59No. You, but you have, you noticed,
- 2:01I have any of these things. You listen to.
- 2:03But now everyone started referring to you guys.
- 2:07Oh no, that's it. Lucy's going out with it.
- 2:10Sprays, it does it. So I does it.
- 2:15You making a name for yourself? You know, who any way that you
- 2:20chose this story? All right, you're responsible
- 2:23for this completely. Why don't you tell everyone
- 2:26we'll go to watched lay, okay? Well, wherever we are, it's
- 2:29definitely not cool. So in fact, it's Atlantis and we
- 2:34are going to watch the underwater Menace I superb
- 2:37Choice. Have you re-watched it in its
- 2:43Elite up for this? Yes.
- 2:44I did. You where did your enjoyment
- 2:46Factor fall between one? I don't know.
- 2:50I do like it. I really like it.
- 2:53I would say it's partly because I think part of it is genuinely
- 2:58good and partly because B of it, genuinely not perhaps quite as
- 3:01quite, don't quite land, perhaps where they were aiming but I
- 3:04think it's very entertaining and Um, the the characters and the
- 3:09designs, particularly the sort of the development of characters
- 3:13from the regulars. He's really good.
- 3:15Yeah, the regulars are gonna see what a hot Bunch.
- 3:19Honestly, you have to keep me under control with this one.
- 3:25Just what I think with this one or I can put my finger on it
- 3:28with this one. If you ever met a person that
- 3:30you just couldn't figure out like we like like you just like
- 3:34II. Usually I'm pretty a good judge
- 3:36of character and sometimes I meet people that are so behave.
- 3:40So erratically or unpredictable and I just can't figure out that
- 3:44but that's how I feel about the underwater minute.
- 3:47I think it starts off as like a normal doctor Adventure off on a
- 3:51bit of a jolly and then it's like this kind of weird
- 3:55scientific trip in episode 2, where we're talking about what's
- 3:59going to occur ever. So free trips into like this mad
- 4:02sort of Comedy farce, hmm, episode 4, so tragedy.
- 4:06Hmm. I mean what would I even for
- 4:09hate you imagine? I don't know.
- 4:12Doping they do. I ever know it sounds bizarre
- 4:16thing? And you obviously this is the
- 4:20earliest trout and that you can see as like a full episode.
- 4:26I have no clue what you think about.
- 4:30Patrick troughton as the doctor. So enlighten me, I like him.
- 4:35I like him a lot. Is the doctor I like that.
- 4:38He is a complete contrast to Hartnell in that instead of
- 4:45being sort of, I mean, Hartley's playful as PSI.
- 4:49Same with side, was it about? I'll have sort of how, how
- 4:53Smiley he was, and how he that people didn't remember that, but
- 4:58in, but trout, and he's like a naughty Schoolboy from a 1940s
- 5:05School Story. You know, with all these crumbs
- 5:07and golly, gum drops and eons and all the rest of it, it's
- 5:11just the sort of Billy bunter style and the fact that the
- 5:14clothes are at the beginning. Anyway, sort of slightly too big
- 5:17for him and and I think that sort of mischievousness that
- 5:23playfulness contrast really well with went.
- 5:27So when he serious, you know, it serious.
- 5:30Yeah, I mean, he's doctor isn't isn't sort of locking about me.
- 5:34Latter-Day told Baker, isn't it? Where is Takin the piss a lot.
- 5:38And then definitely seriously like, oh my God, this is really
- 5:42serious. Yeah, but I also like how how
- 5:45sort of frustrated he gets with things in a sort of Step
- 5:48slightly similar to date with some, but not, not quite
- 5:51similar. And I love the obvious
- 5:54affection. He has for his companions that
- 5:57he clearly wasn't, doesn't he? Yeah, that's that's several
- 6:01moments in this reunited with his companions.
- 6:05Yes. I just think chemistry in
- 6:07general I think. Oh yeah, the people they all
- 6:09come up with a fish fish masks. Yes.
- 6:12I'm on the old. That is really funny.
- 6:16You know what else about him as well?
- 6:17I love is. He's not afraid to be a phrase,
- 6:23I don't know. Doctors don't like showing fear
- 6:25and he's always like, oh my God, like I really love that.
- 6:30Yeah it's a sort of vulnerability about and then at
- 6:34the end he usually got pulls the rug out.
- 6:36The most amazing way. Yeah.
- 6:38There's a couple of moments in this as well where he's like
- 6:40he's sort of being playful but that and then he suddenly said
- 6:44something quite serious. I think Robert Schumann says it
- 6:49in the special features on this, for sure.
- 6:51I watched earlier today, we're like he's experimenting with the
- 6:55role in the first saw two or three stories and trying to
- 6:58figure out where to land with it and he's very comical in like
- 7:01the Highlanders. And he tries it here and then
- 7:06I'm Fortunately, he comes up against Joseph first, and
- 7:09there's no way on Earth. He's got a top.
- 7:12Just so as a result he brings it down.
- 7:17Hmm. And and that's what he lands on.
- 7:19Isn't it after this in the moon base?
- 7:21And yeah, yeah. Actually he can be quite serious
- 7:24and yeah, under play, but, you know, because he's so playful
- 7:29the rest of the time like, oh, the beginning of what is it?
- 7:31The enemy of the world where they end up on the beach is just
- 7:34running into the sea with me. That's exactly what I do you
- 7:39know, slick because because of the playfulness, it makes more
- 7:44of a contrast with the seriousness.
- 7:47Well, they say I would love nothing more than to take your
- 7:51hand and it to Atlantis. Like should we do it?
- 7:55Let's do it. Okay, well, I'll see what I
- 7:57mean. You can't be in then.
- 7:58Okay, in five four, three, two, one.
- 8:04And is it actually determine where Atlantis is?
- 8:08No, he talks about. There's there's talk of an
- 8:11extinct volcano and then something to do with the sort of
- 8:16rock, because police is over in Cornwall, and he said, the
- 8:18doctor says, oh no, not this. Not this rock.
- 8:22That won't be in cool. And in the time monster, they
- 8:28settled. They told me like a Greek
- 8:30island. Don't they understand that?
- 8:32They say it's somewhere around group.
- 8:33Yet the costumes are very kind of Like the pots that were found
- 8:39at from all sorts of places like that, aren't they say, okay, so
- 8:43here we go. Intro, Tardis scene with the
- 8:45fabulous stovepipe hat. Yes.
- 8:48Which didn't last very long, did it.
- 8:51What was that thing? You always.
- 8:52I would like a hat like that, that you don't waste was going
- 8:55saying. And I think one of the things
- 8:58about this, the possibly obviously we're watching the
- 9:03Telly snaps, we're not watching action.
- 9:06Lay it over. You look.
- 9:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:08It is that the trout and Adventures in particular follow,
- 9:12very hard on the heels of each other, don't they?
- 9:15Yes. So really what you've got at.
- 9:17The beginning here is a continuation of what happened
- 9:20before. So if you landed on this story,
- 9:23obviously, everybody's in the land on this story, having not
- 9:26seen the Highlanders because it doesn't exist and you're kind of
- 9:29okay. Well what's the Dottie, its kind
- 9:31of the the dynamic between the doctor and Jamie and Ben and
- 9:35Polly is Of in flux, but you haven't seen the beginning of
- 9:39it. I mean, Jamie's not in the
- 9:42highlands very much. I don't know if you've heard it
- 9:44recently. He does not win it all.
- 9:46Pops up at the end. They all right, you coming with
- 9:48us, then off. They go.
- 9:50So they've got, they've got through this thing with Jamie
- 9:52ever met, initially of, like everything.
- 9:54Like, you know, what's that flying Beastie?
- 9:56And all of this, yes, for a few stories and then they just drop
- 10:00it. It's like, I know we've, yay,
- 10:02they're at this point. This point where he's clearly
- 10:04just like he, he Holmes much more modern for want of a better
- 10:11word and of course, he's clothes change as well.
- 10:14So the Tardis can magically fit him out.
- 10:16In Polo neck, jumpers, and, and smaller Kilts.
- 10:19And that polar, they're gone. I particularly like in the ice
- 10:25Warriors, one where he's wearing, where Victoria and the
- 10:28doctors. The doctors got his big coat and
- 10:30Victoria's got a cloak and Jamie's got an anorak over it,
- 10:35and then kill Laughter off like sitting.
- 10:39The my brother always wearing that very tight top.
- 10:42What he's climbing up the Rocks, remember that?
- 10:44Yeah, that's a look. I'm telling you it during the
- 10:48hardest, right? That a very bizarre thing
- 10:49happened. Just saying they go from
- 10:51character to character. Yeah.
- 10:53And we're here was in their heads.
- 10:55Yes, what's that? I don't know.
- 10:59But I suppose it's just a thing that doesn't really happen in
- 11:04television these days. Because he eats eats it sort of
- 11:08quite a cartoony thing. Isn't it on?
- 11:10The only time I can think of it happening is presumably.
- 11:13It happened in that 60s, Teddy, but from cartoons, lots of
- 11:16Scooby-Doo and stuff where you get.
- 11:18Sometimes you'd have a sort of almost visible thinks bubble
- 11:21above the head of the character and they'd be musing on
- 11:23something. I guess it's like that.
- 11:25The only other time I can think of it and Doctor Who is in the
- 11:27mine rubber when he's having that battle with as hard as he
- 11:30goes. No, I will fight.
- 11:32I will fight for that's it. That's the only other time I
- 11:34think about this. Would you say grunting?
- 11:38I know, sometimes, you know when people fight and stuff
- 11:40subtitles, just go. All right, but you know what?
- 11:44Trowel and thinks when it goes to, Here We Go.
- 11:46Whoo. Whoo.
- 11:47Prehistoric monsters or something.
- 11:51He's up for The Adventurous. Absolutely.
- 11:54There. That's or shawl around her.
- 11:56I think we are. So they're all that she and
- 11:59obviously Jamie and she are in there.
- 12:02They're Highlanders outfits too, which is why the doctor still
- 12:05has the Hat. I'm beIN, he's back in.
- 12:07He's that he's currently is where it been.
- 12:10I think he's like as kind of not a pea-jacket the, yeah, it's a
- 12:14short jacket with butter with the shiny buttons in it.
- 12:18Yeah. Would you know where this was
- 12:19filmed? It take told you it was filmed
- 12:21in in December. So it's very cold and I'm going
- 12:26to ask you a question now. How could your Doctor Who trivia
- 12:29is? Hey, can you tell me the other
- 12:31story that was filmed in this location?
- 12:36No. OK.
- 12:37I mean it is a quarry so you can see ya by the sea is Destiny of
- 12:42the Daleks, I really? Yeah, because there's the
- 12:45opening to the cave and is identical.
- 12:47All right? Alex.
- 12:49Yeah. So there you go.
- 12:52That's your, that's your piece of trivia from me the story, but
- 12:57this whole opening. Hmm.
- 12:59This feels like, I mean, we go off into very undoctored Hui
- 13:03type Adventure when we go underground.
- 13:06It's all very kind of normal at this point.
- 13:09Isn't it exploring the location? Yeah, but surely yeah.
- 13:14And although I mean, she says it's Cornwall and the doctor
- 13:16says it isn't. He hasn't said that it isn't
- 13:19Earth. That is true.
- 13:22So, presumably, I mean it at this point we're thinking well,
- 13:26he says it's not Cornwall because the rock is rolling.
- 13:29The, that could be an extinct volcano, but but we could still
- 13:32be on earth so we don't know. We still don't really know
- 13:35exactly where they are. You're lucky, you got to think,
- 13:38like, visually I know this one overspend.
- 13:42It is quite ambitious. What?
- 13:43They're trying to do. They've got gorgeous you, what?
- 13:45We're trying to suggest. It's somewhere in Greece or
- 13:47something like that. Yes, and you've got like caves
- 13:50here. Then you go underground and
- 13:52there's some pretty impressive, like the altar.
- 13:55Yeah, the market or the market does look a bit cheap.
- 13:57Actually the other things? Yes.
- 14:01Don't ask. Where the drugs came from, I
- 14:03think that was bothering me. That's where did they get the
- 14:05Sheep to make? That never mind.
- 14:07But I wonder if I mean, I don't have problem with watching
- 14:12programs that were recorded in black and white in black and
- 14:15white. That's absolutely fine.
- 14:16I'll I wonder if this one has atmosphere black and white.
- 14:20Yeah, it does. But I just wonder if this one
- 14:23might what it would look like in color.
- 14:26Oh bold. Like I think it's completely
- 14:29wild probably. Well I think there are color
- 14:31snaps aren't there of like the fish people?
- 14:33I think I've seen one of a fish person.
- 14:35Yeah, but just just the whole sort of because you can tell
- 14:38from the temple and the high priest outfits and everything
- 14:41that it must have looked completely wild.
- 14:44It's the sort of story. Colin Baker would walk into in
- 14:46the 80s, isn't it? No.
- 14:48And blending completely Hey, be fine here.
- 14:52Thanks to Joseph first. Can you imagine Sarah?
- 14:56I thought, you know, I'll say, I can't wait till we get to their
- 14:58own. This is the best.
- 15:02Okay? So here this strange figure
- 15:04appears in Lego. Did it go get tied up and put in
- 15:07a lie. So, so, poorly gets Paulie gets
- 15:11grabbed and screams and Ben, and Jamie.
- 15:16And the doctor go to her rescue. And then Ben says, you cock, as
- 15:22we get, this is one of the problems is that we can't see
- 15:24where they've been and Jamie are speaking to from Ben, says
- 15:28something about get us out of this contraption and pulleys is,
- 15:32I can't, they've tied me up where we can see that because
- 15:34she's got her arms behind her if she's standing.
- 15:36It's the walk but we can't see what strapping been and Jamie.
- 15:40Yeah, unless unless the door closed at that point, I don't
- 15:44know, but I got a bit as much as like, I I am grateful, we got
- 15:49the Telly snaps and the first With the soundtrack on there.
- 15:52The second episode 2 style and the picture started moving
- 15:55again. Yeah, it's very relieved.
- 15:57Yeah. Yeah, it's just that its own.
- 15:59I don't really mind Telly steps but it's sometimes it's
- 16:03difficult to gauge what's actually going on.
- 16:06Well it's very interesting angle that yes, don't get the
- 16:11complexity of the performances as well.
- 16:12I do especially with someone like Troutman where it's all in.
- 16:14Yes, you know, what will the physical complexity of his?
- 16:18That's a lovely. I think there's some A really
- 16:20nice Direction in this from Julia.
- 16:22Smyth mmm. That's some like like like that.
- 16:25And in a minute, there's a scene where they're all tied at like,
- 16:29like shocked. Yeah.
- 16:32The sacrifice. Yeah, he quite striking.
- 16:36Yeah. Oops.
- 16:41But this part we still have no sort of clue.
- 16:43What kind of a story. This is where we're heading.
- 16:46No. Not in our wildest imaginations.
- 16:49No well here it is. No, but then we've got another
- 16:52bit of been talking about saying to Jamie, oh you've got a touch
- 16:56of the submariners mean. He's got the bends or these he
- 17:00is going or something like that. So that's another sort of
- 17:02painful to see the baby. Yes.
- 17:04Yes. And potentially very nasty but
- 17:06that so that's um, Yeah, and then there's been making an
- 17:11off-color joke about Jaime wearing a kilt.
- 17:15This is the 60s. Remember is the 60s?
- 17:17Yes. What is that?
- 17:18You said earlier about Polly, you know, needing them to rescue
- 17:21this. A bit of that in this, I do
- 17:23because Polly stars in Doctor Who We strong in the wall.
- 17:26Yeah, I think it's partly like 33 companion syndrome, because
- 17:33you've got been in Jamie who are both young men and therefore
- 17:38sent down the mines. But Sent together.
- 17:40So then you've got those two doing, the same thing, you've
- 17:43got the doctor off there, and then you've got Polly as well.
- 17:47And so they, she should have its pushed pushed into the kind of
- 17:53screaming and needing rescuing part almost by default.
- 17:57I think sometimes, it depends on the writer as well.
- 18:00Because I in the Moon Bay, she gets those fabulous scenes where
- 18:03she makes the poly cocktail and takes 15 min.
- 18:06Yeah. And I think Joe she says in the
- 18:08special features Jerry He Davis and keep Peddler, love writing
- 18:12Polly as a strong character and maybe Jeffrey on came in.
- 18:15And just was like, oh, well it's the girl, you know, because
- 18:18there's a scene in episode 4, where she's way leaner, Ed off
- 18:20and square. And I, yeah, I wasn't quite sure
- 18:24what happened, but she screaming he does something, and she goes,
- 18:27oh, I'm glad you did that or something like that.
- 18:29And I'm like, what happened there.
- 18:31Yeah, very women and children. Lost is the doctor at the
- 18:38Titanic. These loads of that, isn't
- 18:41there? There's kind of, you know, like
- 18:42to run where he says, there's just one thing.
- 18:44What's that? I wonder if we can swim or
- 18:48something similar? There's ghosts are awesome zingy
- 18:50one-liners. Do this fabulous, just from
- 18:53Zara, but I mean everything that comes out of their office mouth
- 18:55as price but that the interaction between the doctor
- 18:59and been is particularly delightful in the last in
- 19:02episode 34 just fabulous. Will you indulge me in a few?
- 19:06He's our of quotes later when he comes, of course.
- 19:09Because I just love it. There's not a one line, he says
- 19:12naturalistically, you know, no, not till he's, the gift that I
- 19:17don't know because I've seen him in, I haven't seen the only
- 19:21other thing. I have knowingly seen him in is
- 19:24an episode of maigret, the 1960s series of migrate, which I
- 19:27absolutely love and he's performance in that he's still,
- 19:33he had his slight German accent, but was much more naturalistic
- 19:38and pity. So he's deliberately chewing the
- 19:41scenery in this. I saw him in a Bond film, right?
- 19:44He's one of the henchmen like her, the scientist henchmen in a
- 19:48one of the Bond films and as soon as I saw him, I went mad
- 19:51this film is going to get good. Now Zaroff just turned up and he
- 19:54was so naturalistic I'm like, oh, he's so he's brief Wars in
- 20:02this to the scenery, basically by William Shatner, couldn't do
- 20:06it better. I'm dead.
- 20:10But you know, actually I wanted to say because by all accounts,
- 20:13trousers and was a bit of a quirky character and he was into
- 20:18sort of Atlantis and all this sort of stuff and he was really
- 20:22excited when he heard they were going to do, I think it was
- 20:24called under the water and it's really right.
- 20:27And then he got the script. Apparently, he was fuming, like
- 20:32he said, this is a turkey, you know.
- 20:34And because it was so early in his rum he was like, I don't
- 20:38need this. I'm trying to Obvious myself in
- 20:40this bra, I don't need good material, but you know what?
- 20:44I'll see it is performance. No, not at all.
- 20:47These still professional, he's still making it work and he's
- 20:50got some pretty quirky scenes in this.
- 20:52I'm okay, don't be worried blows the pixie dust is our office
- 20:59space from so, what'd you think about the design?
- 21:04There's lots of design things with the app, but what about you
- 21:07Fabulous? High priests there.
- 21:10The headdress is just extraordinary.
- 21:12It looks like it would look out of a put out of place at a rave.
- 21:15Would it look Circa 1990? Not that, I went to any, of
- 21:19course, or t Square for that, but in about nineteen night,
- 21:22sort of 1994 ish you'd expect. Like, this is what I like I
- 21:27said, we don't know. I don't know what color it was,
- 21:29but it looks as if it ought to glow in the dark.
- 21:32Yeah, like fluorescent yellow. This fellow Ramo is that Ram?
- 21:38Oh, yes. He could such a dignified
- 21:41performance with that costume on, I know, right.
- 21:44That's acting Lucy. I'm home yet.
- 21:46No, it really is. It's incredible.
- 21:49Yeah, but then the other fella Lowell.
- 21:53Mm, the high priest. You think he contends for the
- 21:59campus character in Doctor Who of all time must be out this
- 22:03short. O mighty-armed, do you know, At
- 22:09the way he's dressed and what he's been asked to do clearly.
- 22:12They're all doing what they were.
- 22:14They were requested. Do you know what I mean?
- 22:16Are the sort of his size? I'd be like look, and you cover
- 22:19me up a bit, but exactly in these ropes, he gets a cloak a
- 22:22time. Yeah, you know.
- 22:25Okay. Here's your second quiz
- 22:26question. Do you know what other Doctor
- 22:28Who story? They actually played Lola was in
- 22:31know, he was in the celestial toymaker as the Billy bunter
- 22:35capture an episode for right? Yes, I've seen.
- 22:39Now, what have I seen? I've seen a bit of that, I think
- 22:42there was, I think there's an episode of it on brick box that
- 22:45I watched. Yeah, you lost the last episode
- 22:48because this dude, don't know. Just moving the things around
- 22:50with his mind and it's the one that goes, if you step up the
- 22:53square, you'll be electrocuted and you'll be killed.
- 22:57He's just as camp in that, I'm gonna.
- 22:58Yeah, it's great. But you know it's like how they
- 23:04made the effort they put, like, cave paintings on them at walls
- 23:08and like, They've given all the different, like, the women shell
- 23:12costumes, and she soon as a bit of effort, it might be a bit
- 23:15silly know, it's true. And this is why I want to see
- 23:18what it looked like, because I bet it looked absolutely wild.
- 23:21And then this, the music as well, which of course we can't
- 23:23hear. She is a hell of a score on, to
- 23:27me, Azusa. Go go.
- 23:35Then when, when it's like, we were saying when we did access
- 23:38all that time ago, when Tell you, you got to write Temple
- 23:41music for for an underwater Kingdom.
- 23:44Why not go for it? Go for it.
- 23:46Well people do you know what I mean?
- 23:48This story which clearly is has a clanger but it's clearly not
- 23:54Prestige Doctor, Who Shiro? It's not Genesis of the Daleks
- 23:57okay to install, you know, that stuff or serious drama.
- 24:01You have. Just got to go for Avenue and
- 24:02this song. Go Wild.
- 24:05That's what I say. Blowing kazoo.
- 24:09And enter calling Givens. Oh, yes, that wasn't easy.
- 24:14Famous for like a period dramas around this time.
- 24:17Probably, he was, I look him up because I thought, oh goodness.
- 24:21He must have been really young. And actually, he's, he was older
- 24:25than I thought he would because he was born for early on in the
- 24:29century that made no sense. But, you know, I mean, he was
- 24:32older than I was expecting to be because for me, he's inspector
- 24:36lestrade in the Jeremy, Brett Sherlock Holmes.
- 24:41No, he's not. Yeah, I fucking love those Jerry
- 24:45B. I don't know ideas, that that
- 24:48program for me is like perfect. Casting, Jeremy, Brett, it would
- 24:54hold week. Joel's gray is Mycroft.
- 24:57Was it was there too Watson's in that?
- 25:00Yes, David Burke was the first Watson and he was a little bit
- 25:04more like the sort of, Nigel Bruce model, the sort of
- 25:07slightly bumbling and they would hire you as a story about that,
- 25:10right? It goes.
- 25:10Yes he does. I guess hilarious.
- 25:12You know, because Jeremy Brett goes, you know, Watson, you know
- 25:15it's all about observational, observe everything and then it
- 25:19changes actor between scenes and does he even know?
- 25:22It is no angel, but was the second one and a half.
- 25:26Now we have vital secret will die with me.
- 25:28Dr. W well who's dr. W Lucy.
- 25:33We get a pump that beehive. It's only in this period.
- 25:37Is that unless there's dr. Vaughn were in The Highlanders
- 25:42and then obviously vote and says, who is required?
- 25:47Yeah, but then in the demons, there's the great wizard isn't
- 25:51there. Qui Qui called what?
- 25:53Yes. Yes, whoo-hoo-hoo always he
- 25:58really had. He's got the number plate.
- 26:00Who won? Yes.
- 26:02Well there we go. If Barry Letts says it then is
- 26:07oh my god. Look who's here.
- 26:09Look who's here series? Oh no!
- 26:12Was he saying Look his face. Honestly, this story stoicism
- 26:19for you. So, yes, Joseph.
- 26:23First here in his first appearance as the resplendent
- 26:27Professor. Sarah.
- 26:29You know, I've got a feeling that he's a reason.
- 26:30Why people don't like this story.
- 26:32It is a very, very, very performance, isn't it?
- 26:37But then again, as we stayed, he's capable of not.
- 26:43Eating the scenery and be. So somebody must have said to
- 26:47him, we want a mad scientist and he went for it.
- 26:51You can almost see the fear in trousers.
- 26:53I'll know, I've got one to play this.
- 26:54I can't stop him but he does. He undermines it?
- 26:59That's Yeah, you know, he does manage the right.
- 27:05Know what they say anything on after I thought we read any of
- 27:08the dialogue. So he's saying the doctors
- 27:10saying that he knew as soon as he saw the sort of Plankton food
- 27:14that it must be 0 and that he disappeared as he played his ego
- 27:19as well. So you know, the day that he
- 27:23disappeared, 20 years previously.
- 27:25And everybody thought he was he died or been kidnapped and
- 27:29actually he was Atlantis firstly, I still have to say the
- 27:33greatest scientists. You know time?
- 27:35Yeah, well then is our offices. So what's this vital secret?
- 27:40And the doctor of courses while there isn't one look, I can
- 27:45imagine Jeffrey all that, it's higher part, I like going, oh my
- 27:48God, this is gold. I like the put it all in
- 27:53apparently, actually when when the castles script and they were
- 27:57not amused, orm did not show his face like they, they weren't
- 28:01happy with it. No, no.
- 28:03Well but you know, What's interesting is obviously
- 28:06growing. William is era are the kind of
- 28:08leads into this sort of high camp at times as well and our
- 28:12portfolio season 20 other times as well.
- 28:15There's a bizarre acceptance and love of this kind of Doctor Who
- 28:21now is that? It's all massively entertaining.
- 28:24Over-the-top Doctor Who. Well there's days calling James
- 28:28with these unrecognizable behind those extraordinary eyebrows.
- 28:33Do you imagine there? But I found it They were Ridge.
- 28:35That's what I think. I don't know.
- 28:37I mean he's got a week as well by the looks of it so possibly,
- 28:41but we're coming up to the Cliffhanger last.
- 28:43I gotta ask you something and I want a female perspective on
- 28:45this. Is it a bit troubling that Polly
- 28:51is being held down by a bunch of men that are coming at her with
- 28:55a syringe threatening to do unspeakable things to her, as
- 29:01much as it is elsewhere in Doctor Who My issue with it, is
- 29:05how she plays it. Yeah, there's genuine sort of
- 29:09panic. And yeah, Brian she plays it
- 29:12really well as well that sort of that fear.
- 29:17It just feels, it feels a bit written a story.
- 29:19That's so cool. Make it feels.
- 29:21Yeah. Real moment of Jeopardy.
- 29:25Yes. How did you originally did that?
- 29:28Is that just the TV screen of the think?
- 29:30So yeah, it's hard to see. Presumably, they're moving on
- 29:34that the feet. The fish people would be moving
- 29:37on the screen. So I guess they just projected
- 29:39it or or it was totally screen. What's nice is is nice, but
- 29:44what's surprising is she It's off being like she's like, oh
- 29:48wow, you know, yeah, fish people are then she gets that Almighty
- 29:52line. Do you know what it is?
- 29:54You're not turning me into a fish.
- 29:57Was apparently used to take the Mickey out of all the times.
- 30:00I want to say I'm not surprised yes if she goes wide open as I
- 30:04live better than that until the tree won't hurt you in Mark of
- 30:07the Rani you know. Oh so sees west of the Azores on
- 30:13the Atlantic Ridge. Oh just said where It was, here
- 30:17we go. For those people that are taking
- 30:19note of precise locations. That's where Atlantis is.
- 30:23Well was he is yours? The Azores, are you look?
- 30:30Well, thank you very much. I think they're in the yeah
- 30:34they're in the Atlantic and You know, within your library right
- 30:40now we could literally just grab a book off the shelf, couldn't
- 30:42wait and have a look so you know, professors are off.
- 30:49Okay? Has promised to lift Atlantis
- 30:51out of the sea. Yes, I or an autonomous region
- 30:56of Portugal the Mid-Atlantic. No, what are you got here?
- 31:01Just over Portugal? Well, no, they are there and
- 31:05they had belonged to Portugal. So they drifted off.
- 31:09They pop. They are part of put their,
- 31:10their of Portuguese Colony. But are now an autonomous region
- 31:15and they have volcanoes so that was, there we go.
- 31:20Yeah. Sorry my question.
- 31:20There was a their office plan to lift.
- 31:23Atlantis. See, that's quite a bold claim.
- 31:28Yes. Do you think he's quite right in
- 31:33the head? No, my just have to and you
- 31:40think this is the sort of story where will you sort of study him
- 31:43psychologically and find out what makes him tick?
- 31:47Possibly what we do. Find out in the next episode,
- 31:50don't we? Well, what Y is gone?
- 31:53God. No, not while he's Gone Bananas.
- 31:56But what, what? Why he wants to do what he what
- 31:59he wants to do. I was a bit muddy on this.
- 32:01I'm hoping you can clarify it for me watching, you know, this
- 32:05Cliffhanger. I think this is really well
- 32:08stage because you kind of see it in the reprise.
- 32:11She's being held down and that's all very.
- 32:14And then the camera pans over and it's have massive close-up
- 32:17on the sort of screaming face of the fish person.
- 32:21It's pretty memorable. Do you?
- 32:22No. Yeah.
- 32:25Julia Smith. Where have I heard that name
- 32:26before? Oh, EastEnders.
- 32:30Possibly, I don't know. I don't know.
- 32:32I think she was instrumental in the conception.
- 32:37Wow, EastEnders. Yeah, that's starting.
- 32:40Well, Lucy, that we've reached the end of episode, one of the
- 32:44completely still - no, I forgot. So, it's alive.
- 32:52And what would you care to come with me now into the Realm of
- 32:55moving pictures. I think we better hadn't.
- 32:57We
