- 3:36We are there. We will respond.
- 3:39But this week is Noah's week. Noah, what did you pick, dude?
- 3:45So this week I picked a short called The Relic.
- 3:51This is a short from 2020. There's a movie from 95 called
- 3:56The Relic that when when doing a little bit of research, it
- 4:00seemed like there was a little bit of confusion.
- 4:02Some people were talking about the movie, some people were
- 4:04talking about this short, but it was.
- 4:07It's directed by JM Logan, who has a it came from a career in
- 4:14special effects makeup and production.
- 4:17And that is sort of a precursor to what we're going to what
- 4:20we'll see in the shorts. So before we really get into it,
- 4:23I highly recommend, as with everything we talked about, that
- 4:26you go and watch it, come back and then experience us talking
- 4:30about it and you'll have seen it and it's, it's 15 minutes and it
- 4:35was really fun to watch. I'd I watched a couple of like
- 4:38shorts in the past. It's always interesting to see
- 4:40what creatives do when they're given a time constraint, cause
- 4:45one of the things we talked about is when Lego Movie goes on
- 4:48for too long, that's a big problem they have.
- 4:50And then in something like this, you only have maybe 10 or 15
- 4:55minutes. So we, we go ahead and get into
- 4:58it. So we got a group of explorers,
- 5:01treasure hunter types who are looking for some kind of ancient
- 5:07relic. And when we meet them, they've
- 5:11come back to the little cabin that they're based out of, and
- 5:14they have clearly found something.
- 5:15And something has clearly gone wrong.
- 5:17One of the characters, Kayla, has been separated from the
- 5:20group, and they found a injured man in the forest and they
- 5:24brought him back and he's incoherent, he's babbling, he's
- 5:28clearly injured. They're trying to figure out
- 5:31what's going on. Some of the people in the group
- 5:34are like, oh, you know, they're doing the we shouldn't have done
- 5:36this man. This is this is bad.
- 5:41You had like, yeah, this is bad. They're clearly they've awoken
- 5:48something and we never we don't necessarily see exactly what it
- 5:53is they found, but we do get a little nod to it for the big
- 6:00reveal at the end. But we'll we'll talk about that
- 6:02when we get to it. So they they find Kayla.
- 6:07She makes her way back to the cabin and her face is all
- 6:10injured. It's all ripped up.
- 6:12I thought. I thought her eyes were like
- 6:13gouged out. That's what I thought for the
- 6:15longest time until like that like camera pan where she's do
- 6:19she's crawling. I'm like, oh, OK, like I cause
- 6:23like the makeup would have you think that like her eyes, like
- 6:26the lids were like pulled over. Yeah.
- 6:29Really great effects throughout the whole thing.
- 6:32All the stuff on all the stuff on the people is all practical.
- 6:36It's all prosthetic, it's all makeup.
- 6:38And that's where you get, you can really see Logan's career
- 6:43prior to this, his skills on full display.
- 6:47I don't know if he necessarily did the makeup, but he
- 6:50definitely had a hand in that. It's very a Lovecraftian where
- 6:58it's like there's an ancient relic that might bring on some
- 7:04sort of evil and it's like mystery and they don't know what
- 7:07did it and they don't know what's out there and what could
- 7:10be going on. So eventually when Kayla comes
- 7:15in and she's like, they're like, who did this to you?
- 7:17Who hurt you? And she said, and she points to
- 7:19the guy and she's like, he did this to me.
- 7:21You have to kill him. And there's just chaos.
- 7:25And then one of the guys hits him over the head with a, with a
- 7:28fire extinguisher. Crazy.
- 7:32Yeah. And then we get another really
- 7:34good effect, like a real prosthetic with the other guy,
- 7:38just like notices something shiny inside the the man's skull
- 7:43and they start like digging around a little bit.
- 7:46Dude like this short had no business having the effects it
- 7:52had because I want to talk about for the story further, but I do
- 7:57want to start talking about what we thought right like.
- 8:01Yeah. The acting was good.
- 8:04My problem with it was I don't know if they wanted to be funny
- 8:08at times or serious. And by that I mean a lot of the
- 8:12characters had the quirky like thing going on and like you know
- 8:17like it's just a lot of like the tropes turned up to 11 type
- 8:23thing. But it was good.
- 8:26This was a good short, especially the effects,
- 8:31especially the practical effects here, because it's practical
- 8:35effects. It's in your face.
- 8:36It is gory. It is like visceral.
- 8:40Like the scene that Noah's talking about is this guy gets
- 8:42hit in the head with a fucking fire extinguisher and there's an
- 8:46actual dent in the skull and it cracks the skin.
- 8:51And then the our our one of our main characters digs their
- 8:55finger in. But that's not all they do.
- 8:57They're digging. No, they're like, and they're
- 9:00pushing skin and it looks, it doesn't look cheap that I was
- 9:05like, oh, wow, that looks really fucking good.
- 9:08Like everything about that I was like, oh, this is gross.
- 9:14Like for me to go that was nasty.
- 9:16That's a lot. I was like, this is really good
- 9:19like that. Yeah.
- 9:21Those effects were awesome. And you know, we love around
- 9:25here, we love a practical effect.
- 9:27Yes, we love a, we love a prosthetic.
- 9:29We love a fake head. And this one, like I knew it
- 9:32like when they started like poking at it, I was like, oh,
- 9:35that's a good effect. And then he starts like fully,
- 9:38like you said, he's fully digging around in there.
- 9:40I was like, oh shit. They're like, they're really
- 9:42going all in on this. Well, it made me like go, OK, is
- 9:46that like a fake head or is that like the actor and they like
- 9:48added like an extension? Yeah, that's what I was
- 9:50wondering. So it was cool for me to second
- 9:53guess that, like, OK, is that a fake actor head?
- 9:55Is that an extension to the actual head?
- 9:58Like what is this? It was a good effect and like
- 10:00the brain inside and like the skull and like the key.
- 10:05I guess I gave that away. But like the thing?
- 10:08He's got a key in his head. He's got a key in his fucking
- 10:11head. My bad.
- 10:12But even that, we don't know what that does.
- 10:14So like, that was really fucking neat.
- 10:17Like those effects were cool. The I think where the ball was
- 10:23dropped again was, was this because it was serious?
- 10:28But some of the acting would lead into a comedic like relief
- 10:32effect. That's where I was like, come
- 10:35on, like we've got to drop like the Artie Bucco because the one
- 10:39guy looks like Artie Bucco from fucking The Sopranos.
- 10:43I don't remember which one that is.
- 10:45The the guy who owns the restaurant.
- 10:49Oh, is he the guy who kills the stripper?
- 10:53No, no, that's Ralph Siforetto. Artie Artie is the one who owns
- 10:59the restaurant where Tony burns the restaurant down and he's
- 11:02like, why would you? Do that.
- 11:04I did it for you, like all that shit.
- 11:06So he looked like. Art for you?
- 11:08I did this for you, but like what he was doing in this was he
- 11:13was the comedic relief the entire time.
- 11:15He's like, please don't. There was a really good scene
- 11:17where he was like for a minute I was like watching and it was
- 11:22this moment of I've seen this movie before, like in real life,
- 11:26you've we've all been scared right?
- 11:28Where you've like been with your friends, like we're going to do
- 11:30this thing. And it's like, oh, I don't want
- 11:32to do that thing. And you go anyways, you like,
- 11:34man, I've seen this movie before, though, where it's like,
- 11:37we're doing this thing from this movie and we're going to die
- 11:40right in your head. And like he's looking at this
- 11:43door and he's like staring at the knob.
- 11:45And I'm like, just don't say anything.
- 11:48And he goes, please don't turn, please don't turn.
- 11:50I'm like. Yeah, it's it's for a second.
- 11:52He knows that he's in a movie. Yeah, and you're sitting there
- 11:55like, ah, man, if you just didn't, if you were just like
- 11:57staring at the knob, like I could, I would know that's what
- 12:01you're thinking. Like, oh, dude, if I looked at
- 12:03that, I'd be like, don't fucking turn.
- 12:06And it turns. I'm like, fuck.
- 12:07And I'd run. But he says it out loud.
- 12:09There's a lot of those moments where like, hold that in, like
- 12:12don't do that. But I.
- 12:16Like, aside from that, you know. The premise is sweet.
- 12:21I love, love, love finding like I love the we found a relic.
- 12:26We found this. We have awoken a power that we
- 12:31do not understand. I love that shit so fucking much
- 12:36and it's like just a couple things marred it, but then at
- 12:41the end of this it's like. Then they bring it right back.
- 12:44You're like, oh dude, no, I'm here for this.
- 12:47There's a SO Kayla kind of scampers off she goes and she
- 12:52gets the mysterious relic and it turns out to be a mask.
- 12:56And when she comes back with the mask, her face like melts off
- 13:01and she transforms into this slimy like tentacled winged
- 13:07creature that was a very. Expensive thing they had to
- 13:11have. It's crazy.
- 13:13That must have cost a pretty penny.
- 13:14I think that was all probably CG, but it was really good.
- 13:17That's the only thing I should mention.
- 13:18The camera work in this is really good.
- 13:20It well the cabin itself I was like oh wow, that's the first
- 13:25thing I said I was like wow this is really good camera work bro
- 13:28short that's the first thing I said, but like no this this it
- 13:32looked like a puppet Noah. You think so?
- 13:35It looked like a puppet. No, we'd have, we'd have to,
- 13:37we'd have to do a bit of research.
- 13:38But do you like the? Slime.
- 13:41Yeah, it could have been practical.
- 13:43I don't know. I mean it, I feel like it could
- 13:45go either way. I feel like it might be because
- 13:48this again, because this guy is I.
- 13:51Think he was a practical? Effects kind of guy.
- 13:54Could be. We'll have to do a little bit of
- 13:56research into that, but I did find what that creature is
- 14:00supposed to be. No shit.
- 14:05So what is that? So the like, like we said, like
- 14:09the Lovecraftian inspirations are are definitely clear.
- 14:15So that is supposed to be a God called Oh my God, I'm going to
- 14:22butcher this so hard. But here we go, Neurolothep.
- 14:26Neurolothep. Yeah, Neurolothep, Is that how
- 14:30you say that? Have you heard of this?
- 14:32I I've read what, what what pantheon is it from?
- 14:37OK, all right, here we go. OK, so it's a shape shifting God
- 14:41of chaos. This is saying that fans of a
- 14:46game called The Call of Cthulhu, Yeah, Yeah, you might.
- 14:49You may. Oh, near a lothup.
- 14:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:52So it's a shape shifting God that takes a humanoid form and
- 14:58hides behind various masks. Yeah.
- 15:01So I guess they the mask is where like the God is and it
- 15:06just takes over whatever. I mean, she didn't really put
- 15:09the mask on, but in a way she did put the mask on.
- 15:11She was holding it when all of that happened.
- 15:17I mean the power was in the mask at that point I would think no.
- 15:21Yeah, I think it it's, it's like the Jim Carrey mask where you
- 15:24put it on and then you become the mask.
- 15:26Can we, can we, can we get like more of that movie?
- 15:30More of the mask or more of this?
- 15:33Both because the relic was. What have that crossover
- 15:36crossover the mask on the road. Now you want to.
- 15:39Put on the mask. How about, OK, how about Jim
- 15:42Carrey takes the mask off and he puts it down and it's dark and
- 15:46then he's got like a a lineup of masks and he accidentally puts
- 15:49on the neurolothe? And then his like body just
- 15:51melts. Off and then it just turns into
- 15:53that. Oh, that, that would, that would
- 15:55be, I would, I would watch that in a heartbeat.
- 15:57I'd watch that. Neurolothe.
- 15:59Mr. Logan, get on. That neurolothe.
- 16:04Well, it had a, it had like an Egyptian.
- 16:07It was a little bit of text at the beginning and it and it was
- 16:09like talking about the Pharaohs and whatnot.
- 16:11So I think it. Could be like.
- 16:12Supposedly an Egyptian relic, but for some reason it is a
- 16:15snowy climate. Definite Lovecraft.
- 16:19Yeah. Like that's I but also near a
- 16:24lothep. We're going to say that has been
- 16:28seen as like just a figure, like a man figure, like like almost
- 16:33like the Gray man, like the tall Gray.
- 16:36So like that's cool as fuck. Like dude, that's I love that
- 16:40mask bit dude, because like the mask itself, well, for me it
- 16:44looked almost not Aztec. Yeah, I could see that.
- 16:50But like I'd. Love.
- 16:51It's not what I would have expected like an Egyptian mask
- 16:54to look. Like, I liked how I was trying
- 16:56to hold it in front of its thing 'cause this was very Akira at
- 17:02the end. It becomes body horror.
- 17:04Yeah, I mean, but like, even like in the beginning when the
- 17:06guy throws up all over himself, I'm like, oh, that bubble was
- 17:09good. It was a huge throw, like vomit
- 17:12bubble. And just like, pops.
- 17:13I was like, that was good. But like, no, dude, this was a
- 17:17great short. This was a very good short.
- 17:19I think that the story itself, honestly the story and the
- 17:25fucking practical effects really made it made me go, no this is
- 17:29great, I love this. I mean, it's very, it's very
- 17:32like the whole thing of a short is you want to just say a little
- 17:35bit, but most of it is like set up for a payoff that kind of
- 17:40never comes. In this case, you do kind of get
- 17:44it like when at the end it like pans out and there's like there
- 17:48it's insinuating that they all die in the cabin and then
- 17:51there's this green meteor shooting across the sky and like
- 17:55that ends all life in the universe, something like that.
- 18:02And it's very much it is very much that like unexplainable
- 18:07force. You get this like mysterious God
- 18:10figure and just some just some really, really solid effects.
- 18:15Really solid bit of story for what is 15 minutes of of movie.
- 18:23Well, for it being 15 minutes, I was like, damn, this thing's
- 18:25feels like a movie, like an actual thing.
- 18:28I was like, damn, OK, I've been sitting here for a minute.
- 18:30Yeah. I love when something can make
- 18:32me feel like that. I love when I'm like, I'm like
- 18:35that locked in. I'm like, oh, wow, this is
- 18:36sweet. So Nah.
- 18:38Dude, this was awesome. This is a great pic.
- 18:41I would love to actually see more of this.
- 18:43I would love to see, like, what happens.
- 18:45I'd. Love to see more of JM Logan's
- 18:48work. It looks like he's got he's got
- 18:52couple of shorts going back. To the box.
- 18:57Like, I don't know if they're on screen box, but this guy's, he's
- 19:01has a career that looks like it goes back to about 2002,
- 19:05starting with something called Terror Tunes.
- 19:11He's got something in. He's got some other stuff.
- 19:13It's like a Charlie Manson style movie or short a little horror
- 19:18comedy stuff. Yeah, I'm definitely interested
- 19:20in looking at this guy, and I hope some of you out there would
- 19:23be too. Well, this was this.
- 19:25Was incredible. Well if anybody from the relic
- 19:28sees this, we've had really crazy luck just posting
- 19:32episodes. Yeah.
- 19:35So if anyone from the relic sees this, if you want to talk about
- 19:38what this was exactly, hit us up, hop on the show.
- 19:41We would love to talk to you about this because this was
- 19:44really cool. This was really fucking cool.
- 19:48I liked it. Yeah, it was really sweet.
- 19:51Hello. You know, it's like I said,
- 19:53like, like I said earlier, like a short, it's really interesting
- 19:55because it's, you know, you're very limited, so you really have
- 19:59to pick and choose what you're going to do.
- 20:01And you know, like there's no time to draw anything out.
- 20:06There's barely any time for any exposition.
- 20:08There's like no time to explain stuff.
- 20:10It's just you're seeing things and then they're gone.
- 20:13There's just, there's nothing. There's no time to really dwell
- 20:17on things. So I think that.
- 20:19Really lends itself also to this unexplainable creature because
- 20:25first of all, like you couldn't explain it even if you had the
- 20:27time, and we don't have the time and it feels very real like to
- 20:32the characters. Well, yeah, like the God, It's
- 20:36so fucking sweet. It was sweet.
- 20:38That was cool. I love, I loved that.
- 20:41Yeah, I love that. It was.
- 20:44It was awesome. I've always wanted to make a
- 20:46short. Connor was talking to me about
- 20:48that for a while there, about making one should do.
- 20:50I had AI, had an idea. I didn't know about in college
- 20:55for one of my one of our classes that you do right at the end
- 20:59when you're before you graduate is a practical applications one.
- 21:03And one of the projects was to run a 48 hour film challenge.
- 21:07And like that was a lot of work, but it was it was really fun to
- 21:10see what people were able to do. Definitely looks like something
- 21:13that'd be fun to participate in. You know what I want I what I
- 21:17always wanted to make was this nightmare I've had since I was a
- 21:19kid. I've had a nightmare since I've
- 21:21since I was a kid about a rug. It sounds weird.
- 21:25Listen though, So when? I was on that word.
- 21:27I actually you keep going, but yeah.
- 21:31OK so when I was a kid I had a nightmare that I've had up until
- 21:34this day. I've always had this nightmare
- 21:38where I wake up and I think I'm actually awake, but I'm in the
- 21:43dream still. And what happens is I'll look
- 21:46around the room, I'll see something in the far end and
- 21:50I'll get up out of my bed and walk out.
- 21:52And there was used to be this rug in the center of my room
- 21:55when I was a kid, a circular rug.
- 21:57I would always step on it in the dream.
- 21:59And when I'd step on it, the like the stitching on the rug's
- 22:03eyes would just pop and would stare, look at me.
- 22:06And the stitching, as soon as I hit the center would go and I
- 22:10would fall into the rug and it would I want.
- 22:14I've always thought that would be a cool story to do.
- 22:17That would be. Like because like when the like
- 22:22in the dream, I just go through and when I go through and land
- 22:27on this like just nothing. Just like an infinite void.
- 22:32It's a well you I when I land, it's just like I land.
- 22:35I wake up. That's kind of interesting
- 22:39because I I had, it wasn't necessarily reoccurring, but I
- 22:42remember a vivid nightmare I had as a kid where I was running.
- 22:45We were, I was in like just a group of like random people in
- 22:49this like big scooby-doo ass house.
- 22:51And there was just like an old lady who had to run around.
- 22:53She would like throw her hand out in a big carpet roll would
- 22:56go up and when it would like land on people, they would
- 22:59disappear. And then I remember, like, I
- 23:01came around the corner and she threw the rug up and it went
- 23:04over my head. And then I woke up and I was
- 23:05like, that was like, probably the scariest.
- 23:08Thing. Something about something about
- 23:09a rug. A.
- 23:10Rug, dude, we should do the rug, but Connor wants to do it.
- 23:14I'm dude, let's run it. I have to run at my grandma's
- 23:18house. We could be.
- 23:19We could be the next JM Logan. Dude, I have the rug at my
- 23:23grandma's house. It's that rug.
- 23:25I know exactly which rug it is that would scare me.
- 23:28It's. Could you do you think you could
- 23:31be brave for the shoot? What we do I.
- 23:33Could I think we would have to get Landon to do it?
- 23:37That could work. And hop out of the bed.
- 23:39That's the whole thing. We should.
- 23:41We should do something cool though.
- 23:42Scream it came from screen box turns into like a whole fucking.
- 23:45We're making short films now because of the Relic if.
- 23:49Anything was going to like inspire you to make stuff and
- 23:55we've talked about that before with stuff like cocaine crabs.
- 23:58If anything's going to inspire you to make something that's
- 24:00ultimately that's great. Like that's that's what you
- 24:03want, right? You should do it like people
- 24:07should follow and do what they want to do, right?
- 24:10Like we're just two dudes talking on a show, but this
- 24:14takes work too. Like to do the show.
- 24:17Like we don't have to do this, right?
- 24:19Like we do it cuz like, hey, let's do this, this fuck.
- 24:22We love watching movies, we love watching shorts, We love getting
- 24:25inspired and we love to talk about things positive or
- 24:29negative. Like even in the negatives,
- 24:32we're always like, yeah, this may have sucked.
- 24:34This did not. But in between the suck, there
- 24:38was a lot of cool shit. Yeah.
- 24:41That's the important thing. No, this was awesome.
- 24:43The relic was sweet, and I think we should do the rug.
- 24:47That's that's our. Rug.
- 24:48We're going to call it that. We're going to call it the rug.
- 24:51Oh, beans Cam, baby, we got beans Cam.
- 24:54He's sneaking in instead of Penny interrupting.
- 24:57We got beans tonight. Oh my God, yeah, we should do
- 24:59the rug. We should do the rug.
- 25:03All right, so we want to wrap it up.
- 25:06You want to wrap up this little short episode?
- 25:10The short episode that turned into a full length screen box.
- 25:13No great, great pick. Noah.
- 25:15The Relic was awesome. I give this, I'll give it 3.5.
- 25:19There was the acting. It was really the acting.
- 25:21It was really the not knowing they want to be funny comic.
- 25:25Too much Comic Relief when I think a lot of more seriousness
- 25:28would have better suited this had there been that seriousness
- 25:31and urgency to the actors, which again, they did look like
- 25:35they're having a great time. That's good and all, but there
- 25:38was just that that disconnect for me where I was like, man, if
- 25:42you just would have been a bit more serious here, I think I
- 25:45could have really, this would have really hit health for me.
- 25:48Yeah, definitely. I'll probably give it a four out
- 25:51of five. That effect was those effects
- 25:53were just so, so impressive. They were too good for what it.
- 25:57Was. And if that was all practical,
- 25:59that's even more impressive. Yes, absolutely.
- 26:03So no great pic. I love this.
- 26:06We we're going to have to do weigh more of these short, these
- 26:08short like stories and actually make the episode short.
- 26:12With that being said, enough talk about me and Noah's
- 26:14nightmares that we've had as children.
- 26:16Thank you guys so much. Check out it came from screen
