- 0:00Up next for Dan Hurley's Crew Senior Day Sunday against Seaton Hall. Our coverage
- 0:04begins with a hard auto group count down a tip at eleven thirty here along
- 0:07the Yukon Sports Network, at the Varsita Network app in theavaritaed network dot com.
- 0:11Just to wrap up what we were talking about a moment ago, a
- 0:13game day at at Yukon prior to the Villanova game and coach had ten chances
- 0:21to knock one in from a long range and caught by surprise unable to do
- 0:26it. But when Richard Hamilton Dan on his first try fires it in,
- 0:31is that a separator between you and him as a player, would you say?
- 0:35I mean there's so many players in between me and him. Well,
- 0:39it's like that sound like a guy. I'm like going to compare my career
- 0:44to Mike. But I was probably better than you, So I know that
- 0:49I'm taller, you know, just in every way, probably performed better than
- 0:54you. So I appreciate you trying to make me look bad. No,
- 0:58I'm not making it. But Hamilton, what an emotional day for him in
- 1:03a night Uh and the thing that came came through I thought with his speech
- 1:07when he was at center court halftime and you were in the locker room obviously,
- 1:11But his passion for Yukon and his his love and appreciation for what Coach
- 1:17Calhoun brought to this program and this campus and guys like him who've won NBA
- 1:22championships, Hall of Fame type people. When they say those sort of things,
- 1:26that has to be meaningful. I think for you know, guys like
- 1:30you and then people are wearing that Yukon uniform these days. High level guy
- 1:34and you from from having a relationship, you know, the I'm fortunate enough
- 1:40to have a coach Calhoun and uh, you know, just to learn more
- 1:44about uh, you know Rip and his recruitment and you know, with the
- 1:49support Rip had at home and how they raised him. It's just he's a
- 1:53high level guy, you know, one of you know, one of a
- 1:59couple of players that you could make an argument for here that you know,
- 2:02greatest of all time in such a storied place. And then you know,
- 2:07obviously the NBA Championship and and and what he did with the Pistons. But
- 2:12you know, he's, uh, he's been great to us. Like people
- 2:15have no idea. He doesn't do a lot for the camera you know,
- 2:19he makes his appearances here and sends the text messages and puts in a strategic
- 2:23phone call to support the boys, and he support the program and uh,
- 2:28without fanfare, he's he's, He's and he's got a wonderful family. It
- 2:31was great meeting everybody. Yeah, and Richard Hamilton when he went to the
- 2:36pros. I was in the NBA and I saw a lot of him early
- 2:38on, and he, you know, he struggled to find his spot in
- 2:42the league and eventually ended up in Detroit under Larry Brown and they won a
- 2:46championship. I think his his professional arc of his career is a good example
- 2:52of you got to stick with it. You got to find the place that
- 2:54you do, you know you fit in best and and find out a way
- 2:58to succeed at the highest levels. Because it wasn't easy for him to begin
- 3:02with in the NBA. Yeah, I think Wizards or you know, and
- 3:07with with Michael Jordan's you know, uh coming into the organization. But you
- 3:12know he uh, I know he helped Jordan a lot. I know,
- 3:15you know him and Ray done a great job. I think, uh,
- 3:17you know, with our guys, you're trying to serve as a mentor or
- 3:23uh, you know, big brother or what have you. And then you
- 3:27hope that you know, maybe you get involved with with with with book and
- 3:30try to help James buck Knight as he's trying to you know, kind of
- 3:34uh, you know, to find his way in the NBA again. And
- 3:38then you, i know, you talk about family with the players and obviously
- 3:42it's it's an important part of your approach. Uh. And Hamilton is is
- 3:46big with family right with his own family, and and he kind of carries
- 3:51over to what he talks about in public, which I think is so important.
- 3:54Yeah, it's just obviously you know that there's there's town to basketball players
- 4:00that have made a lot of money playing basketball, and then they're just high
- 4:05level guys like smart, smart, sharp, professional, hard work and you
- 4:13know, morals, ethics, lives by code. You know, you know,
- 4:17Rip would be successful in anything he'd put his mind to, just because
- 4:23he's got just unbelievable traits. Well, the Huskies are twenty five and three,
- 4:29fifteen and two in a conference, and to go chronologically over the last
- 4:32week or so that we have we haven't talked. You had a trip to
- 4:36Creighton in which the Blue Jays ambushed you and knocked you off end of the
- 4:43fourteen game winning streak. When you win for two months, are you saying
- 4:47to yourself nobody can beat us? Are you thinking how are these guys going
- 4:53to beat us? At? What's your thought process when you get on a
- 4:55run like that. Yeah, I don't think, you know, not necessarily,
- 4:59you know, eve there. I think you're you have confidence because you're
- 5:01you're being successful. And then you're obviously you're you're you're really checking yourself and
- 5:10checking every aspect of the program to look for complacency because human nature, obviously,
- 5:18you know, starts to uh, you know, affect people. Some
- 5:21people can't handle success, some people can't handle failure, you know, so
- 5:27you're you're just hyper aware of it. But I think sometimes you know,
- 5:31your opponent, you know, plays, you know, plays their best game.
- 5:35Sometimes you play, you know, you play poorly. I think in
- 5:41that particular game, uh, it was it was a it was a it
- 5:45was a it was a raucous environment to say the least, and you know,
- 5:48and create and played great and our defense broke down that that was a
- 5:53game we needed to try to win. Sixty three, sixty two, sixty
- 5:59one, fifty nine and our defense just completely sunk us, and they were
- 6:04a lot of very kind of basic principles. But Creighton's a tough team to
- 6:11play against. They've got three of the best players in college basketball. So
- 6:15yeah, you know, I guess hots off to them. Well, they
- 6:19did play a great game. Fourteen threes made in the game. But you
- 6:24know, this is such an emotional game on the on the college level.
- 6:28Then they go to Saint John's and they get beat there by fourteen points.
- 6:31That's just another example I think of anything. It can happen anytime a Big
- 6:36East team goes on the road. No, yeah, I mean that's why
- 6:39it's so hard, you know, to win the regular season, because as
- 6:44good as that team is, as talented as that team is, as great
- 6:47a potential as they have to win the beat Toornament to win the to get
- 6:51to a final four with those three great players plus Ashworth play much better is
- 6:58I mean, they're eliminated from the regular season opportunity. Now it's just our
- 7:02ser Marquette. You know, that's gonna have a chance to win it,
- 7:08you know, because it's so easy to lose that Saint John's, to lose
- 7:11that Xavier, to lose that Villanova, to lose that seat in the Hall,
- 7:15to lose that Providence you have to be You've got to be a special
- 7:17team to win in all those places, or to win enough. Yeah,
- 7:21that's for sure. All right, Dan hurleys with us and this is the
- 7:25Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Mike. Chris Pino will be back in just
- 7:29a moment with more here on lear Field.
