- 0:00Philip, last week, we, and when I say we, I mean you and me, the
- 0:04royal we, we covered, we covered the insider.
- 0:09Yes. The last time we did an episode,
- 0:11yes. A live 1 and we weren't as
- 0:14usual, in in full agreeance. No, wouldn't want it that way.
- 0:17No one thing we did agree on was that fall, you know, very
- 0:20embarrassing. We really felt Jeffrey Wagen
- 0:24Wagen very good his fall and I made a joke, if you recall,
- 0:28about watching a movie called the Fall.
- 0:30Yep, I am currently watching a prime series.
- 0:33The Fall. Wow.
- 0:34Fascinating. Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:35And it's British, OK. And we didn't realize that going
- 0:38in, but Prime has a lot of British stuff, OK.
- 0:42And this one stars the great Gillian Anderson, the.
- 0:45Perfectly mediocre generic. Gillian Anderson, I don't love
- 0:50her. I don't love her.
- 0:50Honestly, I have no idea. I've never seen anything she's
- 0:52ever been in. Did you?
- 0:53Realize she was British. Well, I knew that, but I just
- 0:56didn't care. And a little tidbit of
- 0:58information. I don't like the Brits.
- 1:01Really. Yeah.
- 1:02Was it because of? No particular reason, but I, I
- 1:05find myself just generally you don't like the right British
- 1:07people, but OK. British comedies like Monty
- 1:10Python I've never engaged with. I've never really enjoyed.
- 1:13I don't really find it that funny.
- 1:15People love not but that like consistent, like, Oh my gosh,
- 1:18genius. I just never saw it.
- 1:20I did watch when I was a kid. I watched Red Dwarf, which is a
- 1:23sci-fi comedy. Yes, it's gold.
- 1:25Yeah, it's complete gold. Blackadder, Rowan Atkinson,
- 1:28anything he did, Hugh Laurie was in it.
- 1:30Funny stuff. But what I like about the Brits,
- 1:35they do a lot of mystery and that's what the fall is.
- 1:38So a lot of cop shows, a lot of investigators do they they love
- 1:41it. My parents have Brit Box.
- 1:43Oh gosh, they live on it. All of it that it's like
- 1:45non-stop. Housekeeper is just like a part
- 1:47time detective. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:50Why me? I watch Murdoch Mysteries now.
- 1:53That's not British, but could be.
- 1:55They love it too because, you know, it's a Commonwealth.
- 1:58Yeah, exactly. There's a connection there.
- 1:59So you're not a fan that would never watch it?
- 2:02No. OK.
- 2:03Not about Hercule Perot, Agatha Christie, anything.
- 2:06You know he's French, so. That's true.
- 2:10That's that's accurate. Yeah, I mean, I guess so.
- 2:13I just for whatever reason, never really took to British
- 2:16humor. In particular, I like The Office
- 2:18the the old original Ricky. Gervais he hosted the Oscars,
- 2:21correct? The Golden Globes, Golden
- 2:22Globes, there it is. Yeah, a couple years in a row,
- 2:24but yeah, just never really got into it.
- 2:27And TV is obviously, as you know, a little bit of a sketchy
- 2:30situation for me. OK, that's fair enough.
- 2:32In that case, do not watch the fall.
- 2:33You won't like it. Maybe it's the one that's going
- 2:36to turn me around. It's.
- 2:37Irish do like Belfast. I like Irish people.
- 2:40OK, OK, here we go. That's a rough town, Phil.
- 2:43That's a rough town. I don't know if you've.
- 2:45Been there, I was in Dublin. OK, loved it.
- 2:48The hills. My God, the hills.
- 2:50But Belfast, at least how I was portrayed in this in 2014, it's
- 2:54rough around the edges, fair, some bad neighborhoods.
- 2:56So sure. Well, we saw a little bit of
- 2:58that in The Devil's Own. I, I, I've been doing the the
- 3:02Irish accent at work and well, my assistant manager was named
- 3:08Danny. Oh, Danny Boy.
- 3:09So he must hate me. Sure.
- 3:13But that's OK. He'll never.
- 3:14He'll never have to see you again.
- 3:15That's right. Hello and welcome to Off the
- 3:21Shelf with Phil and Dave, the Movie talk Show where each week
- 3:25one of us takes a movie off our shelf, presents it to the other
- 3:28and discusses it at length. And this week we've got coming
- 3:34off of Dave's Shelf 2006's Casino Royale starring Pierce
- 3:40Brosnan. No, no, Sir.
- 3:43No, Sir. Was going to wonder.
- 3:45I am wondering. We'll continue to wonder until
- 3:46you tell me if you're going to give me a hard time about not
- 3:48starting at the very, very, very first Bond movie.
- 3:52I I'm starting at the very first Daniel Craig movie.
- 3:55I thought that would be. I was.
- 3:55Actually going to give you a little bit of props for that.
- 3:58The credit goes to at least finding an entry point into a
- 4:02series that is 18 or 20 movies in.
- 4:05That makes some sense. I mean, I I don't know your
- 4:09affection for Daniel Craig from that glorious movie we watched
- 4:13Cowboys and Aliens, which was not a great film.
- 4:17No, that was terrible. But luckily he redeemed himself
- 4:20by Road to Perdition, if you recall.
- 4:23Yeah, he was good. It was fantastic.
- 4:24And absolutely. That was really the only place I
- 4:26ever saw him. Yeah, prior to.
- 4:28Yeah, I've seen him in a couple small roles.
- 4:30I can't think of the names of the movies, or they were kind of
- 4:32just. More of a Seinfeld.
- 4:34No, no, heavens, I wish he was in that tattoo.
- 4:38One, I was tattooed all over the Rogers store video when we work
- 4:42together. Oh absolutely.
- 4:44Yeah. He's fantastic in that.
- 4:45Girl with the Dragon, I think he was nominated for nothing, but
- 4:48he could have been. Yes, and should have been and
- 4:50should have won. And David Fincher, classic.
- 4:52Yeah, brilliant movie. I will argue he's the best Bond.
- 4:54But let me tell you one thing, Philip, before we get obviously
- 4:56into this movie, we need to share each other's history here
- 4:59of said character. Ian Flemings, Double O 7.
- 5:03That's the creator of this this Miss Man of Mystery or a spy
- 5:08guy, whatever you were. Am I 6?
- 5:11Have a couple of questions about that as we go, but yes, oh,
- 5:13that's. I encourage questions and
- 5:15hopefully I'm like, you all have answers.
- 5:17Yeah, hopefully, hopefully. Let's start with you.
- 5:20What is your history with? Double O Well, the history
- 5:23begins here. The character is ubiquitous and
- 5:28I have certainly seen trailers and the TBS on the weekends
- 5:32playing Thunderball or You Only Live Twice or whatever.
- 5:36I'm very familiar with the character, like kind of in the
- 5:40in the very abstract and know many of the names of the movies
- 5:45and have played even a couple of slots based around James Bond
- 5:50movies. So I'm familiar enough with sort
- 5:53of conceptually, OK, but I've never ever, ever watched more
- 5:56than maybe 10 minutes of any Bond movie ever.
- 5:59That's impressive for someone who claims a national radio to
- 6:05be a movie. Buff.
- 6:06Yeah, but I'm very clear about where my lines are.
- 6:09And the lines are Yeah, I just run here.
- 6:12Big action set piece movies hold no in you.
- 6:15I've never seen a I've I've seen brought that up the first
- 6:17Mission Impossible movie in the first half, maybe a Part 2.
- 6:21And I was like, I'm out. That's it.
- 6:22So I just never. I watched the first Bourne movie
- 6:24and never. Yeah, you're not into the action
- 6:28and you've enjoyed a couple of them, I think that we've brought
- 6:31up I. Like action movies.
- 6:32But when action is like set pieces, it's just sort of built
- 6:36around the idea of get me from A to B to C and chase and run and
- 6:41gun and blow things up. I don't have much interest.
- 6:43Action movies with a little bit of.
- 6:45Like a team. I thought there was parts of
- 6:47that movie that I found to be kind of compelling when we're
- 6:50sort of coming up with the plan or organizing.
- 6:51That's definitely a movie that comes up with the.
- 6:53Plan. Yeah, exactly.
- 6:56However ridiculous that is, you know, the tank in the midair,
- 6:58Yeah, it's a little questionable, but the characters
- 7:01in that are kind of clever or interesting or whatever else.
- 7:03But action for action's sake doesn't do anything for me.
- 7:06This is my, I wouldn't say main entry point.
- 7:09I did grow up with the Pierce Bronson ones.
- 7:12Brosnan. I'm not even going to try to say
- 7:13it right. I know there's an S before the
- 7:15end. I know.
- 7:16Sure. So as a kid, I mean, we're
- 7:17talking about Goldeneye. I want to say 95, sure.
- 7:20Die another day, 98 all in around there.
- 7:23So my parents. Were up to late 90s?
- 7:25Yeah. 10 or 64. You're a Goldeneye guy.
- 7:27No, I never had the 64. OK, Yeah, but I was going to ask
- 7:30you because that was a very popular never.
- 7:32Even if you've never heard of the characters, it's a fun,
- 7:34people love it. Multiplayer, you know that
- 7:36little square in the corner on the TV there?
- 7:38Not enough, not enough. So I think my parents were huge
- 7:42fans, but they grew up with him. I think they watched some of the
- 7:45Connery and stuff like that. So I was exposed to it.
- 7:48Did like the Pierce movies, generally speaking.
- 7:51I did watch a little bit of one a few months ago.
- 7:55Didn't hold up, didn't hold up. But we'll talk about the effects
- 7:57and stuff. And it's really impressive.
- 8:00This from 2006. I thought I felt like I was
- 8:03watching a movie from like last year.
- 8:05It's held up really well in my opinion.
- 8:08Even having that older technology.
- 8:10I mean, you can tell what you're the movie is by the cell phones.
- 8:13Sure. So when you see that early on,
- 8:15it's like, OK, that phone 2006. Yeah, that, that lines up.
- 8:19But I thought this one, obviously I got the 4K set, of
- 8:22course, specifically of the Daniel Craig section.
- 8:25Yes, I've always enjoyed them. I've watched them all and I'm
- 8:30happy to bring off the shelf and you didn't ask, but I'm gonna
- 8:33tell you why now. It's just the time.
- 8:36Now's the time. Now's the time.
- 8:37I figured you maybe needed a fix perhaps.
- 8:41So I thought maybe a little gambling might be in order for
- 8:44you. Yeah, that's fair.
- 8:46I have a Vegas trip coming up for sure.
- 8:48There you go. I've been sitting on these for a
- 8:49while, I was in the mood. Movie almost 20 years old, if
- 8:52you can believe it. Yeah, yeah, checks out.
- 8:54I hadn't watched it in a while, so I thought this dude, this
- 8:57change of pace, we haven't done an action fueled sort of movie
- 9:00and I want to kind of get your opinion on it.
- 9:02And I was. Hankering for it.
- 9:03So here we are. Here we are, Phil.
- 9:05So the first question I have for you, David.
- 9:08Yes, you had questions is. You were speaking about him
- 9:11being sort of mysterious and mystery man this and that,
- 9:15right? He seems very well known by just
- 9:19about everybody. He's introducing himself to
- 9:21everybody. That's his thing.
- 9:23I kind of wonder. Yeah, he's not so mysterious.
- 9:25You know, it's like everyone he meets seem to go like, oh,
- 9:27you're Bond, we know you. So I just wonder, like, if
- 9:30you're a spy. Little.
- 9:32Yeah. On the nose.
- 9:33But you're right, now I don't think it's really a.
- 9:35Fault. It just makes me laugh that this
- 9:37sort of super spy, you know, like everybody knows this guy.
- 9:40My biggest question is 1. You can't answer, which is why
- 9:45in the infinite wisdom did this movie come out in 2006?
- 9:49It seems built in OK that you would release it in 2007.
- 9:55OK. Oh, is it like an anniversary
- 9:57or? 007 Oh well, yeah, it would be
- 10:00like the entire ad campaign and the whole poster and everything
- 10:04about it would be double O 7. I don't understand why you know
- 10:08you know a missed opportunity by one year by a matter of you know
- 10:11six months. It just feels like a missed
- 10:13opportunity because the the brand had been dormant for a few
- 10:16years already, right Post Brosnan. 98 maybe?
- 10:19I think 98 might have. Been the last.
- 10:20So you're looking at 567 years. You had opportunities to
- 10:23obviously build it up to being. Once a few more months.
- 10:26Once a few more months, that's all.
- 10:27Just a curiosity matter of marketing question.
- 10:29Seems a little odd. That is a valid valid point and
- 10:32you're right, don't have an answer.
- 10:33I didn't think you would, yeah. Let's briefly talk about the
- 10:44director. I don't have a whole lot on him.
- 10:46Martin Campbell's his name. He's your uncle.
- 10:50He's he did the Zorro's couldn't care less.
- 10:52Never saw those. Yeah, me neither.
- 10:54Take it easy. He did do Goldeneye, so this is
- 10:56not his first bond. Interesting.
- 10:58That's noteworthy. Okay, an edge of darkness with
- 11:01the great Mel Gibson. I don't know that movie at.
- 11:03All it's on my shelf. Okay, yeah, it's gonna come off
- 11:06eventually. It's not very good.
- 11:07It's one of the straight video. This is from when we close down
- 11:11I think. I mean, snagged it.
- 11:13Payback was the other one that came out.
- 11:15Very sort of. That was a movie people know.
- 11:17Yeah. That was like Brian Helgeland.
- 11:19Yeah. Academy Award winner this.
- 11:21Is when Mel Gibson was doing those types of movies.
- 11:23So I think I kind of got lost in that mix.
- 11:26I watched it once. I had really high hopes for it.
- 11:28Looked really gritty. Hey, we'll go back to that's the
- 11:31whole point of the show or. Absolutely yank it off the
- 11:34shelf. See with some sticks.
- 11:35Exactly. With some time away, it's been,
- 11:37you know, 20 years now. I think it's time to go back.
- 11:39But for now, that's really all I have for the director.
- 11:42I don't know if you have any Martin Campbell exposure.
- 11:45No, the movies you referenced, I've never seen any of them.
- 11:49Not really a guy. You don't get out much.
- 11:51No, what I think is interesting about talking about a director
- 11:55and Bond is that obviously we're coming on the heels of them
- 11:58announcing that Denis Villeneuve that.
- 12:01Was a happy accident. We'll be directing the the next
- 12:04one and I. Don't know about that.
- 12:06I have my own kind of reservations around that I.
- 12:09Was going to use the word reservations slow.
- 12:12He's a slow. Burn guy, I think he's he's
- 12:15incredible. One of my favorite directors.
- 12:17He's does really great, interesting work, but I wonder
- 12:20how that would play in this. Yeah, in this field.
- 12:23A good Canadian boy on this Canada's birthday, Yeah.
- 12:28Is he related to the the the driver?
- 12:30No, OK, all right. But good question.
- 12:34Thank you. Yeah.
- 12:36So I wonder what's interesting about that is I haven't seen a
- 12:39lot of obviously I've seen any of these movies, but other than
- 12:42I think Phillip Noise directed a couple.
- 12:44Maybe that name rings a bell. We must have done a noise we've.
- 12:48Done a noise, Yeah, but his choice is an interesting one and
- 12:52we're kind of curious how it goes.
- 12:53Whereas this guy, Martin Campbell, seems completely
- 12:55generic, like those movies don't stick out to me as being
- 12:58interesting or compelling. Nothing I was drawn to
- 13:01personally didn't really. And I don't think that Zaros did
- 13:03that well, You know, first one didn't be the huge, huge, huge
- 13:06hit, but the second one, Oh, yeah, it was.
- 13:08That's more referring to as. Yeah, so good.
- 13:11Yeah, worse than Edge of Darkness and not very good
- 13:13exactly as movies. So.
- 13:14Yeah. Well, this one was received well
- 13:17Casino Royale not just by IMDb, but by the just the general
- 13:22public it. Is your pool?
- 13:24Yeah, man on the street they. Say it's one of the better ones
- 13:28of all 26. Like I said, I have seen nothing
- 13:31pre Pierce. Yeah.
- 13:33Oh, nothing. No, and I like the character,
- 13:36but I really like Daniel Craig. OK, that's my draw in.
- 13:39And I do like an action movie as you.
- 13:41Know absolutely every other week I got to relive the trauma.
- 13:43Yeah. And another thing I like is the
- 13:45gadgetry of it all. Now there there will be a
- 13:48discussion about that. Yes, there will be.
- 13:50Yes, some questions, we'll get there.
- 13:52More questions, more questions. But let's get into the Casino
- 13:55Royale and maybe we'll give the the listeners just a brief sort
- 13:59of breakdown of the synopsis. All faithfuls.
- 14:02Breakdown. Here we go, folks.
- 14:05You're sitting down. After earning a license to kill
- 14:09secret agent James Bond, Jimmy Bond sets out on his first
- 14:12mission as Double O 7. Bond must defeat a private
- 14:15banker funding terrorists in a high stakes game of poker at
- 14:18Casino Royale in Montenegro. There it is.
- 14:21That's that's exactly what happens.
- 14:22It's exactly they. Really nailed it.
- 14:24He does have a license to kill. See, I thought he was breaking
- 14:26the law, but he has a license. A license?
- 14:29He does because one of the movies way back, I'm not sure if
- 14:32it was Moore or or Connery, one was called, I think, a license
- 14:35to kill. The Dalton Movie.
- 14:37That was Dalton. OK, so I thought maybe that was
- 14:39that movie had the license to kill, but generally he doesn't.
- 14:43But for that one he did. Sure, but apparently according
- 14:46to this. You only live once.
- 14:48Yeah. And you live twice, I think,
- 14:49actually, isn't it? And this, he tries not to kill
- 14:52people. He does try, but it tends to end
- 14:54up, you know. I don't think he tries.
- 14:56Yeah, he kills everybody he runs.
- 14:58Into and I know know if that's a Craig, what he's bringing like
- 15:02that that specific version of it.
- 15:04Craig's a little more gritty, which is one of his.
- 15:06Yeah, those are. Choices.
- 15:07I I've heard when this movie was announced that the idea was to
- 15:10make it grounded, Yeah. In ways that maybe the Brosnan
- 15:13movies hadn't quite elevated towards, yeah.
- 15:16And I don't know if you know know this, but each movie sort
- 15:19of has a little intro before the intro.
- 15:22OK, so this one starts out in black and white right from the
- 15:27beginning. The Lion's Gate I'm assuming
- 15:29MGMMGM. Well, there was a line, so you
- 15:31can see how it could make. Absolutely.
- 15:34And I swear, I was like, there's something wrong with my copy.
- 15:38I got this box set from Wellington.
- 15:40Yeah, I thought maybe Alexis somehow got these bad copies,
- 15:44that somehow I had all these thoughts going through my mind
- 15:47and I seriously, I was in the settings of my Blu-ray.
- 15:49Player Wow, I. Hadn't seen the movie for
- 15:52probably over 10 years. OK, but I did not remember it
- 15:56began in black and white. OK, so you're tweaking.
- 15:58I'm, I'm tweaking and I'm thinking there's something wrong
- 16:00on my end and I'm fiddling and no, that's the intro zero Lutz.
- 16:06You wanna make any comments before I go any further Cuz this
- 16:09is your first experience, your first exposure.
- 16:11Talk to me, Phil, what's going on in your mind?
- 16:14I thought it's a great way to start a movie.
- 16:17Wonderful. The black and white thing didn't
- 16:20really necessarily trip me up or anything like that.
- 16:23I liked the inner cutting between the sort of bathroom
- 16:26fight and whomever this person is in the office.
- 16:30I like the. That's double O six.
- 16:33OK. Yeah, well, he's sure he's a
- 16:35double. O, he's the outgoing double O
- 16:37yeah. So this idea of who is this and
- 16:40what is this and having him beat the crap out of the guy and I
- 16:43thought a pretty viscerally well directed sort of sequence A.
- 16:46Lot of porcelain. And then the discussion of the
- 16:48first kill, like how'd that go, How you feeling?
- 16:51And then joking about the second one's that much easier, I
- 16:54thought, what? That's great.
- 16:55And then another thing just about the the familiarity of
- 16:58this character, the ubiquity of this character in in the
- 17:00zeitgeist is having never seen any of them, that pose and
- 17:05position of the walk and then turn into the camera and shoot.
- 17:09Yeah, is very, very common. So much so that coincidentally,
- 17:14I would probably most connect to that sequence through Friday the
- 17:1913th Part 6, which actually opens in that way where Jason is
- 17:24walking, You know, a profile turns and slashes Spoiler for
- 17:29me. And then the blood comes out as
- 17:31if it was as if it was a Bond movie.
- 17:33It's that sort of iconic an image.
- 17:36Now you can see that sort of type of scene in a quality film.
- 17:40Yeah, you don't know anything about Fred A 13th.
- 17:41Person, I know enough. You will soon.
- 17:44That's my fault. Exactly.
- 17:46But anyway, it's just I thought it's great and I thought a
- 17:48really engaging way to start the movie.
- 17:50I was really hooked in pretty quick.
- 17:52Then we get a life supply of Chris Cornell.
- 17:55That's enough for me forever, Really.
- 17:57Yeah. Soundgarden.
- 17:58And is that right with Soundgarden?
- 18:00OK, I did have the I did have the CD from Columbia House.
- 18:03I was a member. OK.
- 18:04Those are good deals, I don't care what you say.
- 18:06Absolutely, it was 100%. Buy one at full price and get
- 18:09like a bunch like for a penny. Nowhere.
- 18:10They went out of business. I just giving it away, yeah.
- 18:14How about Mariah Carey all. Sorts of good stuff, Absolutely.
- 18:17I love that. Yeah, but.
- 18:18These tend to go on for a while, and that's always been the
- 18:21nature. It's nothing new.
- 18:22I I can't name any of the other ones other than one we'll get
- 18:25later, which is Adele I'm gonna spoil right now.
- 18:27She does one of these as well. Yeah, Well, we've got Live and
- 18:29Let Die, that's the Paul McCartney, which is phenomenal.
- 18:32We've got Nobody Does It Better, which is Carly Syne, which is
- 18:34phenomenal. OK, there you got Goldeneye,
- 18:36which is Tina Turner, which is was that Tina?
- 18:38Unbelievable. Wonderful.
- 18:40A lot of notables. A lot of notables.
- 18:42Again, having ever seen a movie, I know all of these songs, so
- 18:46the character and the impact of this series is in you.
- 18:50Can't hide from it. Yeah, like it's ingrained.
- 18:52I was really captivated and engaged in this movie from from
- 18:56minute one, really, because I thought the animation and the
- 19:00sort of structure and style of that title sequence with the
- 19:03clubs, the hearts, all the different cards in the way that
- 19:06that positioning is played out. And I really like the song.
- 19:16Well, Phil, let's take a trip to Uganda.
- 19:19If I'm saying that correctly. Have you ever been?
- 19:22Because they have pinball machines.
- 19:24I know you're a fan. I don't need to travel to Uganda
- 19:27to to play a game, but that's. True, you have.
- 19:29Good to know you have one here. Yeah.
- 19:30I just. I thought you'd appreciate that.
- 19:32But you said you didn't even see it.
- 19:34Didn't it's the kid playing it? Yeah, that's around the time
- 19:38Mads, we can call them Mads Mickelson.
- 19:41That sound right? Yeah.
- 19:42Yeah. Using one of the Star Wars
- 19:44films, I believe the one that's not really part of the trilogy,
- 19:50that one Rogue One using that. You haven't seen it?
- 19:53Yeah, but I don't remember him in it.
- 19:54I only watched the movie. Once he's like, he he made the
- 19:57Death Star, like he knew there was a flaw with it.
- 19:59OK, Yeah, So didn't care. Well, he cared.
- 20:02He's a good guy. He's a good guy, but he plays a
- 20:04good bad guy. OK.
- 20:06And you would think he only plays bad guys, but he's been a
- 20:08good. Guy OK, there you go.
- 20:10Fun fact, fun fact. And similar to Jeffrey's
- 20:13daughter has asthma. And if Jeffrey was there, he
- 20:17could explain to us, you know. That's right.
- 20:21Yeah. You can explain.
- 20:22It's just, it's just bad, bad air coming in.
- 20:24Yeah, Hey, you love the connective tissue, buddy.
- 20:26I do. I'm laying it up here.
- 20:27For you, I appreciate the. Hell out of it, and then we get
- 20:31really our first action piece pretty early on.
- 20:35Yeah, got 10 minutes in, Yeah. Yeah, and there's a lot of
- 20:39jumping. Parkour was a big thing.
- 20:41That is the term. I'm never quite sure what that
- 20:43is, but is that what that is? That was big then.
- 20:46A very big back then if you recall Die Hard 4, of course I
- 20:50recall the. Movie that.
- 20:51Yeah, the elevator. Fight sequence very.
- 20:54Parkourish OK, so that's what that is and then we're referring
- 20:57to that. And watching this, yeah,
- 20:59certainly jumping up and around and using the wall to jump ahead
- 21:02and up and so forth. Speaking of Die Hard, actually
- 21:04one thing we both appreciate in Die Hard 1 was showing that John
- 21:09Mcclane was scared of something. Yeah, he was flying in in that
- 21:14case, so it really made him a grounded character.
- 21:17Now, it's not quite the same here, but we do see in this
- 21:20whole sequence that he's not perfect, where this guy he's
- 21:23chasing is doing all the great moves and we see Bond trying to
- 21:27do them. I don't think it's at the level
- 21:29of of I have a fear, which is why I love John Mcclane's
- 21:33character. But at least it shows he's not
- 21:35like completely destructible, that he can do anything.
- 21:37There's a little bit of, you know, I have to push back a.
- 21:40Little bit but I OK. You're.
- 21:43Right in that it's somewhat A deficiency.
- 21:47But if there's a problem I have with the character, generally
- 21:50speaking, is that there isn't a lot of fallibility.
- 21:53I think that generally it's handsome too.
- 21:55Gorgeous man. Makes you sick, but.
- 21:59Nothing really. Goes that wrong, you know, he
- 22:01kills a guy, he gets admonished, he kills another guy, gets a
- 22:04little bit admonished. There's no real consequence that
- 22:07would let me. Push back there.
- 22:08A lot of women he's with end up dead.
- 22:12That's not great, that's sure. But I mean.
- 22:14Consequence for his actions. He kills somebody and M says you
- 22:18shouldn't have done that. We wanted him alive, OK.
- 22:20And then he goes and kills the next person.
- 22:22You shouldn't have killed him. We needed answers.
- 22:24OK, So there's no consequences. He gets a little bit of
- 22:26lenience. Although he granted, but he's
- 22:28only just become. This double O so I wonder like
- 22:30where is the lenience coming from?
- 22:32This is what I think, I could be wrong.
- 22:33I don't know the history of M and him, but I feel just because
- 22:36he wasn't a double O 7, there is a relationship between the two
- 22:39when he was, you know, O 7, you know.
- 22:42Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's obviously been in the
- 22:44company with MI6I imagine or my wife thought M16.
- 22:49So I think that's a gun. I'm like it's MI 6.
- 22:52OK, I see your point Phillip. But I do, but it doesn't bother
- 22:54me. But I don't see.
- 22:55Any I don't really see him as being a fallible character and
- 22:59he gets the chick, he gets the guy, he gets the mission
- 23:01accomplished and goes back to work.
- 23:03Like this guy is basically impervious to pain and succeeds
- 23:07in everything he does and he. Enjoys the pain, as we'll see a
- 23:10little bit later on. Absolutely so.
- 23:12That's not a knock on the character, but I don't feel that
- 23:15same level of grounded human and every man in the middle of I've
- 23:20seen worse. Extenuating.
- 23:22Perhaps, certainly, but this action sequence goes out for
- 23:24about 8 1/2 minutes. And as you know, my tolerance
- 23:28for this is pretty low where you're just chasing up and down
- 23:32and up and down. Although I hate to admit it, but
- 23:34my friend Lawrence, who mentioned a couple of times,
- 23:37Larry, absolutely. Yeah, shout.
- 23:38Out he was. Visiting Vancouver in 2002,
- 23:41maybe just after I had moved. He was there for a few days and
- 23:44we just churned out some bullshit action sequence for a
- 23:48Vin Diesel movie. Oh yeah, we kind of saw him, he
- 23:51more than I, as like, this guy's going to be the next thing and
- 23:54he hadn't really yet fully ascended to that.
- 23:58Thing and we were just like. Yeah.
- 23:59And we were going to have him battling real estate mogul on
- 24:03top of a crane battling in this, whatever else.
- 24:07And I'm watching this and thinking, well, this is kind of
- 24:09this is your your vision. This is just sort of recognizing
- 24:12that there is a visual flair to shooting an action sequence in
- 24:15the scaffolding. So here it was.
- 24:17It was nice to see. And you need crane operators.
- 24:20For the crane scene, yeah, that's a position, absolutely.
- 24:23And you also need a Frasier Crane.
- 24:28And a Martin, Don't get me started.
- 24:29Buddy. Speaking of sitcoms, another win
- 24:33for Milos. We get to a brief scene with
- 24:37with Mads and his beau. And she is from an episode of
- 24:41Seinfeld, and she played the wife of a guy named Milosh.
- 24:46Milosh. And there's a whole tennis
- 24:47thing. You didn't see it, but that's
- 24:49where she's from. She's not very good.
- 24:52She's not in this movie very much.
- 24:54I don't think she says a word. That's fine.
- 24:56But it's noteworthy. Sure.
- 24:58I have it here. Yeah.
- 24:59Yeah, Yeah. Seinfeld.
- 25:00Yes. But that's just a layover until
- 25:02we get to the Bahamas. Philip.
- 25:04And I know you love the Bahamas. I do.
- 25:07You've been. Yeah, I've almost been.
- 25:09But Nassau didn't come to fruition.
- 25:11Missed opportunity. Yeah, that's what my.
- 25:13Wife keeps telling me I'm like, well, honey.
- 25:15But what they do in the Bahamas is they drink and they gamble.
- 25:18But that's maybe just what we see in the in the film they
- 25:21swim. Yeah, swimming.
- 25:23Snorkeling, yeah. Yeah, not a big fan.
- 25:25Got a theme? Park a water park there.
- 25:26Yeah. OK.
- 25:27Atlantis. I believe you.
- 25:29Yeah. I believe you, gorgeous.
- 25:30I like this. Introduction.
- 25:31I like the valet guy joke. OK, that's pretty funny when
- 25:34he's tying his shoes and like, hey, guy, you're gonna make me
- 25:36wait. Sorry, Sir.
- 25:37Yeah, yeah, Yeah. Well, I was wondering how you
- 25:39felt. About that whole sequence cuz
- 25:40what these movies tend to do some worse than others, is the
- 25:44conveniences and the contrivances yeah, this is a
- 25:46big. Note Yeah, yeah, so.
- 25:48This is a little bit of it of, you know, he takes advantage of
- 25:51an opportunity which I think is clever totally and see.
- 25:54The opportunity to get action, if that's Bond all the way, I
- 25:57don't. Mind that and he he gets himself
- 25:59into the security room and pretty easily finds the disk
- 26:02rather easily, knows how to use it rather easily.
- 26:05You need to accept that on a certain level, as long as it's
- 26:08not too, too much. I, I personally, you know, I'll
- 26:12say it right now, I don't think this movie is too bad, all
- 26:15things considered, sure, but it does exist.
- 26:18And it's, it's hard to do these types of movies without a little
- 26:20bit of these conveniences and contrivances.
- 26:22But I don't think it was too bad.
- 26:25But what, what do you think? Cuz you're not a guy that
- 26:27watches a lot of these films. Is it an irritant for you when
- 26:31that happens? And we've talked about this
- 26:321000. Times or maybe and we'll
- 26:34continue to. A few 100 times at this.
- 26:36Point, which is things like that don't typically Take Me Out of a
- 26:39movie because that is me. That's the movie, right?
- 26:41So if he's that good, then that's what he is.
- 26:45There could be a time where that might wane and wear a little
- 26:49thin and kind of roll your eyes if the scenes that that movie is
- 26:52supporting aren't compelling or interesting and it's a sequence
- 26:55of that or whatever else, right? Every movie's got contrivance as
- 26:58you need it to propel the story forward.
- 27:00If he's wrestling with a security guard for 45 minutes to
- 27:03get the disc, or he's sitting there pressing remote 10 times,
- 27:06what's the bright button? Right?
- 27:07That's interesting. Storytelling.
- 27:09Fill out it it. Becomes not a movie I want to
- 27:11watch, right? So yes.
- 27:13OK, so he's good at remotes, whatever, I don't care.
- 27:16There's big coincidences. And there's little coincidences,
- 27:18but yeah, so, so that. Stuff doesn't bother me at all.
- 27:20I think it's perfectly reasonable that a spy or like a
- 27:23person this caliber can do the things that he's paid to do.
- 27:27And do you think horses? Should be legal to ride on the
- 27:30beach. I was thinking this scene.
- 27:31Is very random until she gets off the horse and looks at her
- 27:36and like oh that's what him coming out of the water like
- 27:40that unneeded a. Moment.
- 27:41Yeah, it's just a beautiful. I could not stand up.
- 27:43Just a beautiful man. Now we get sort of to our first
- 27:53game of poker film. Yeah, you could tell I perked.
- 27:56Up. I couldn't stand up at.
- 27:58This point this is. Something I do and it's a fault
- 28:01of mine and I did it with One M Nights boobies glass.
- 28:05Where do these poker players look like poker players?
- 28:09And this is the waiter thing that you were.
- 28:11Having exactly, yeah. These guys are like, yeah,
- 28:14anyways, it might be. And again, I'm split.
- 28:18There's like a few like, OK, yeah, another night moving very
- 28:20good. Deepish in the archives.
- 28:22Yeah. And I thought generally for this
- 28:24table, I'm like, OK, yeah, I can see this guy, random poker
- 28:27player, this person here, this woman.
- 28:29Yeah. OK, I can buy these all as poker
- 28:31players, I guess. OK This is a me thing.
- 28:34I need to buy into the whole situation.
- 28:36Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:37It's all or nothing. You're all in.
- 28:39What I find interesting. We've talked about baseball and
- 28:41hockey, how it translates to film because of the the elements
- 28:45it brings. Yeah.
- 28:45And poker is another thing because it's it's about, you
- 28:50know, there's a lot of luck. There's like the cards, but
- 28:53there's also the bluffing, playing the player not.
- 28:55The not the that's the hand, right?
- 28:56He says that. Yeah, you stole that line.
- 28:58That's in the movie. It's rule 1 of.
- 29:00Poker right? One thing I I'll push.
- 29:02Back a little bit on it is what this movie does and it's a
- 29:05little bit more later on, but I'll just kind of plant the seed
- 29:07here is the illusion of skill. Like it's it's not actually
- 29:12skill because it ends up being the cards at the at the end.
- 29:15You can both play each other like and read each other, but at
- 29:19the end of the day, if you're both going all in, it's just
- 29:21about what cards you have in your hand.
- 29:23That's it. But the way it plays it, it's
- 29:25like I've somehow wished these two aces into my hand.
- 29:29It's completely luck. Everything, every card that
- 29:31comes up is luck probabilities. More than it's luck.
- 29:34That's the whole thing with the sheaf, right?
- 29:36Like that's his whole thing. The numbers is his name.
- 29:38He's a math guy. You, you know.
- 29:40The statistics. So if you're looking and you
- 29:42have an ACE 2 in your hand and a certain amount comes out on the
- 29:46flop, you're like OK, there's a 27% chance on the river I'm
- 29:49going to get this or a 62% chance on the turn.
- 29:53I'm just saying we. Didn't see the bad hands.
- 29:55I think we could have spent a little time on a few bad a
- 29:57couple 7 two hands would be to stop just to just to explain.
- 30:02Every minute of every possible thing.
- 30:05It's not dissimilar to the poker on television, which I was
- 30:08really big into in there. Like you were Watcher.
- 30:10Yeah, absolutely. What's that world poker tool
- 30:12with Mammoth? What's that guy's name?
- 30:14Helmuth tell me. Yeah, so Lock and whole lot of
- 30:18them. Yeah, anyway, I used to watch a.
- 30:19Lot of it. Vince Van Patten hosting and
- 30:22yeah, would you ever bet a car? With Brunson.
- 30:25No, no, no, don't own a car yet, so well, maybe you should play
- 30:28for. One.
- 30:28That's right, no. I love this scene though.
- 30:30I love poker, and I think that is incredibly dramatic and very
- 30:34filmic for for six people sitting around a table.
- 30:37You can make that work and I think this movie shoots those
- 30:40scenes very well. And I'm engaged not just because
- 30:43I like poker and because I like gambling, because it's just good
- 30:45film making. I just think it's an
- 30:47opportunity. Yeah, you get to really kind of
- 30:48play the the scene really well. And this is.
- 30:50Really like the baby scene of it too.
- 30:52The the main event is yet to come, so I think it does a good,
- 30:55good job of not making this too big, but kind of give us a taste
- 30:58of what the pokerness of sure, absolutely the movie would be.
- 31:01You get to see the. Cockiness come out and the other
- 31:03guy, right? Speaking of.
- 31:04Cockiness. Bond's about to get that in with
- 31:09his wife, this guy and the guy he laying out.
- 31:12Bond has his car now. Yeah, he's got some good lines.
- 31:16You know he's he's when you're that good looking.
- 31:18You don't even need the good lines, but he's got them.
- 31:19Has a woman ever looked? At you like that?
- 31:22Ever. No.
- 31:23It'd be nice, wouldn't it? It would desperately be nice.
- 31:25He does show great restraint, though.
- 31:27I don't think I could do the job.
- 31:28I think no, You would. Yeah, no, I agree.
- 31:31I would, I would be. This could wait.
- 31:33Yeah, the the flight. I've got time for champagne for
- 31:36two. Not for one.
- 31:37Yeah, we're gonna stick around here.
- 31:38For a little bit and then maybe I'll fly to where I need to be
- 31:42afterwards. But yeah, gorgeous woman.
- 31:45Yeah. Need some attention.
- 31:46Clearly, Bond's willing to give it to her until she finds out
- 31:49he's on the midnight train and he's gotta go, and we end up at
- 31:52the body exhibit. Is that a real thing?
- 31:55Yeah, it's incredible. Really neat thing.
- 31:57It's basically donated bodies and kind of ripped the skin off
- 32:00and position them in certain ways.
- 32:02You get to see a lot of pretty crazy and somewhat gross, but
- 32:06really fascinating. Yeah.
- 32:07This movie obviously doesn't really exploit much of that, but
- 32:11it is sort of an interesting place to hold a scene.
- 32:14Yeah. And you're like I was.
- 32:15There I basically saw that. Exhibit Yeah, it's really cool.
- 32:17You could connect to it. Absolutely.
- 32:19Good. So you're in, You're locked,
- 32:20locked in. Absolutely.
- 32:29Did you see Richard Branson? No, really.
- 32:31No, he's there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:34Didn't even want credit for being in the movie.
- 32:35Crazy. There you go.
- 32:37But we get a big sequence with Kevin Pollak's son, that's who.
- 32:40That is great. Just looked like him a little
- 32:44better. I don't care.
- 32:46But now we get our another big. I don't see huge, but big
- 32:50enough. Showcase of an action sequence,
- 32:53I would say. Yeah, it's absolutely it's.
- 32:55A big chase sequence through the airport, running and gunning and
- 32:59tailing, which is again this movie and movies like it have
- 33:03that opportunity of the pacing 10 feet behind somebody looking
- 33:08around you see the the color of the.
- 33:09Hat or the briefcase or or something.
- 33:12You just need something like, OK, I got it.
- 33:13I got it locked in so. Those kinds of things I find
- 33:16endlessly compelling to me. I found this scene, maybe
- 33:19because of its in the inside the airport part was more germane to
- 33:26the story. The stuff that happens outside
- 33:28the airport I think is action for action's sake and I get a
- 33:31little boring but personally. What at the end of it though?
- 33:35He needs to stop this because that's very reliant, like the
- 33:38plot is really relying on on this accident happening,
- 33:42obviously. And just to touch on the plot a
- 33:44little bit, because that's what is it's about the stocks, right?
- 33:48So they want to take down the plane, Mads, if you will,
- 33:51because he's got a lot of money. Yes, depending on on that.
- 33:54And they make some references to, you know, 911 and stuff like
- 33:57that. And it's a whole world that I'm
- 33:59not involved in when it comes to stocks.
- 34:01I don't play the game. But it makes me wonder how much
- 34:03of that is in real life. Like it's like, you know, people
- 34:06doing things they really shouldn't be doing to affect
- 34:08stock prices. Well, I mean, ultimately.
- 34:10The US has been doing that just recently with all the What's the
- 34:13sense I get the. Nonsense.
- 34:15And that GameStop. I saw something else years ago.
- 34:18But meme stocks, they call them, where it's just a gaggle of
- 34:22yeah, Internet people push a price a little high.
- 34:24And yeah, some people make some money.
- 34:26So are you content? With that as a plot for this,
- 34:29yeah, I think that. Ultimately, we'll get to the end
- 34:32and as it goes through the rest of the movie, but ultimately
- 34:34this movie's plot is, is it a little thin, Useless, useless.
- 34:39Yeah, it's. Never to me made explicitly
- 34:42clear what the point of any of this is.
- 34:45I think it's to the movies credit ultimately that it
- 34:48doesn't seem to really matter as we certainly get throughout the
- 34:51rest of the movie with Mads as a villain.
- 34:52Like there's just certain pieces of this movie where I just think
- 34:54like, So what? I don't know that I could tell
- 34:57you what it is beyond playing poker as he says at the end in
- 35:01Montenegro. Like the synopsis is no matter
- 35:03what the plots. Are in these movies, Phil?
- 35:05A few dead bodies will come out throughout it.
- 35:07The guy's wife was tortured and killed.
- 35:10Yep, par for the course. Yeah, I'd feel bad.
- 35:13About that he doesn't he? Doesn't, or at least he.
- 35:15Doesn't show that he does at this point, and it's really all
- 35:18James is doing. So one thing, and this comes
- 35:21back to the whole Superman conversation I think we've had
- 35:23before, is you're trying to save the world, but by doing that,
- 35:27you're killing people at the same time by crashing through
- 35:29these buildings. That's certainly a critique of
- 35:32the modern Superman. Yeah.
- 35:33Sensical Zack Snyder movie. Exactly.
- 35:35That's the old ones. It's not that.
- 35:36Yeah, this is obviously a much, you know, smaller scale.
- 35:39But his actions. Yeah, are causing the deaths of
- 35:42innocent people. And it's not really ever put
- 35:45into questions like, oh, OK. Well, oh, well, this is the
- 35:48thing. I was just talking.
- 35:48About the beginning the the consequence, he does this thing
- 35:51and M says you shouldn't have done that and he goes So what?
- 35:53And everyone just goes, OK, your next mission is do this.
- 35:56So it's not like put on probation suspension fire.
- 35:58Well, no. It just none of it.
- 36:02Matters. Yeah, there's a few times you
- 36:04get. Trust issue he gets, yeah.
- 36:06Just nothing ever really plays out.
- 36:07There's no consequences to it. He's good, I mean.
- 36:09He's good. That's what I mean.
- 36:10He gets a lot of leniency because he's so damn good.
- 36:13But throughout the series, there are points where he does get cut
- 36:16off. OK, that's dramatic.
- 36:18Actually, at this point in this movie, they started to track him
- 36:21because they don't trust him. Yeah, sure.
- 36:22What's happening right in the scene?
- 36:24OK Right after her death, her body was found in a hammock.
- 36:28You look like a hammock guy. I love a hammer.
- 36:31I like James. I can read.
- 36:32People I wish my backyard. Had it was amicable yeah, yeah,
- 36:35it's not. We got a great tree, but just
- 36:37one Yeah, put a. Like a a pillar, a pillar or
- 36:41something. Yeah, piece of wood, piece of
- 36:43wood fill up. Speaking of wood, we get on a
- 36:47train which used to need wood to run, I believe.
- 36:51No, no in the fire, but I think meeting.
- 36:53Eva Cole might make you think about wood.
- 36:55Yes, yes. She's gorge gorgeous.
- 36:58Yeah. And possibly an orphan, we don't
- 37:01know. Yeah, there's.
- 37:03Again, this trying to fill a back story that doesn't really
- 37:06seem to matter. Any thoughts around that?
- 37:07Little conversation. I love them.
- 37:09Yeah, you do. I think those.
- 37:10Two in particular, They're at this movie.
- 37:12Did you love dialogue? I do like dialogue, yes, like
- 37:16words. I find the chemistry between
- 37:18these two to be excellent. Her entering and saying I'm the
- 37:22money and him saying and every penny of it.
- 37:25I remember that there's a character Miss Moneypenny,
- 37:27correct? That is true.
- 37:28From one of the earlier. Early movies.
- 37:30So it's just a throwaway line that it's not like laugh out
- 37:34loud, but it's a chuckle moment even though I don't know
- 37:36anything about this movie or this character, I'm like, I got
- 37:38that joke. You still got the the wink and.
- 37:40The nod now that is one of the critiques of this movie Phillip
- 37:42and I don't quite share it because I didn't watch the
- 37:44original ones, if I can call them the original ones, the
- 37:47older ones, if you will. Sure is.
- 37:49They moved away from the actual character of Moneypenny, okay?
- 37:53And they moved away a lot from the gadgetry that I was gonna
- 37:57have. Later, which is this movie, what
- 37:58I know of Bond or like would I've had in my brain was
- 38:01gadgetry and when you mentioned it earlier, my question at that
- 38:06time would have been I don't see it in this movie.
- 38:08Is it happening? And maybe it could be right?
- 38:11But I remember, if you maybe Speaking of pinball, I played a
- 38:14lot of arcade games in the old days.
- 38:17Do you remember Spy Hunter? Yes, I do actually.
- 38:19So that is a game that to me. Was like that Bond, it's oil
- 38:23slicks and behind you it's it's machine gun or missiles.
- 38:26Even out of the front. Sure.
- 38:27Yeah, right. Images of what I had in my head
- 38:30of like a real Batmobile. Really.
- 38:31Yeah. Like kind of.
- 38:32All of these little gadgets costed powers, obviously.
- 38:36Kind of ripped it off years later, right?
- 38:38Like this is to me is. Bond and I'm watching this movie
- 38:41and I see almost nothing with the exception of the
- 38:43defibrillator yeah I mean obviously they put the the
- 38:46tracking device but that's not really a thing see that every
- 38:49day now it's. Like you know they made jokes in
- 38:51naked. Gun, right?
- 38:52It's like, oh, here's the blow dart that blocks the guy out,
- 38:54and here's the banana that, you know, like that's a great
- 38:56series. Yeah, you must have been ruined.
- 38:58Yeah, yeah, from, from the small trailer I saw it looks.
- 39:03I have my concerns. I have my, I have my concerns.
- 39:05Now they did this similar and we'll get into it when I get
- 39:08into the Mission Impossibles later, a few months from now.
- 39:11Just friendly heads up. There's a few of them, about 6
- 39:14or 7 or 8 of them. And I had the same sort of issue
- 39:17in the fourth one with Jeremy Renner, as we'll know from the
- 39:20town deep in the archives. And I'm thinking to myself, the
- 39:24face masks not in this one. And I really didn't like
- 39:26Spoiler. Yeah.
- 39:28And I really didn't like them. It was called protocol.
- 39:30And I'm like, it's protocol. Yeah.
- 39:31I didn't. I didn't like it.
- 39:33I revisited. I actually enjoyed.
- 39:34It's one of my favorite ones, actually.
- 39:35But that was sort of my initial thing.
- 39:38But because I don't really have all that, you know, James Bond
- 39:41with more. I don't really know what I'm
- 39:43missing. Sure.
- 39:44And I can tell you right now it comes back in some later
- 39:47versions. So they're not completely out
- 39:49with it with the whole Craig series, but it doesn't seem to
- 39:52be something it wants to focus too heavily on.
- 39:55And at least this one, well, I think to be fair.
- 39:57It wasn't something I was missing necessarily to your
- 39:59point, it wasn't like where's my gadgets?
- 40:02I just it was the three things I know it's like chicks, travel
- 40:05log kind of destinations and gadgets.
- 40:08Where in the world it's got chicks and I got travel log,
- 40:12where's the gadgets? Not that I needed it, but it
- 40:15just it was like noticeable to me that it was not there.
- 40:17Just one of the critiques, but if you.
- 40:18Do sort of read through the reviews.
- 40:20I don't spend a lot of time. I am curious though to see what
- 40:22other people think. Sure.
- 40:23And fans of the whole series. That was a notable thing.
- 40:26Here's a question for. You we're about an hour ish in
- 40:30and we meet Mathis. Mathis.
- 40:32Yep, when we're speaking. About plotting and character and
- 40:35so forth. I watched this movie twice.
- 40:37I don't understand the point of Mathis.
- 40:39He's just their contact in that sure town.
- 40:42He's just there. He doesn't really offer
- 40:44anything, but he's there throughout the rest of the movie
- 40:46he gets. The plot?
- 40:48He's got some Intel and he has some information.
- 40:51Sure, he's been watching Mad Z, so he knows what he's up to.
- 40:55So he's just, I know what he does in.
- 40:57The movie. I'm just saying, I don't really
- 40:59know why he's there. Well, he's they need.
- 41:01There's a character. He just seems.
- 41:03Bland to me, yeah, he's a little bit bland.
- 41:04He did not win an Oscar for this.
- 41:06You're right. So he'll be back.
- 41:08He'll be back, yes. Is he good or is he bad?
- 41:10That's the real question on this guy, and I'm not going to say
- 41:12anything yet. Well, we've seen the movie.
- 41:14You're right, he's we still don't know though.
- 41:16Exactly. It gets pretty grey.
- 41:18It's one thing they they point out as you get sort of deeper
- 41:20into these spy games, if you will.
- 41:22It's very, very, very dear guys. Absolutely.
- 41:25The inaugural episode is it gets a little grey of who's good,
- 41:28who's bad. You end up may even, you know,
- 41:30not realizing you're actually turning.
- 41:32That's kind of the fun part. To me, yeah, That that that's
- 41:34the intrigue that we've talked about in spy movies or yeah,
- 41:37even horror movies to an extent. Like these movies where the
- 41:40duality and the sort of whose side is anybody on and the
- 41:43intrigue of that I find very compelling.
- 41:45I just don't think in this particular movie, Mathis, who is
- 41:48clearly playing by the end, obviously two sides of the coin,
- 41:53is all that interesting or compelling.
- 41:55He's got some good lines. I don't think so.
- 41:57I hate this character. OK, well, I'm saying already.
- 41:59This Long story short, you don't like math?
- 42:01Yeah, I just think he's. Useless.
- 42:03OK, there it is. Medium take.
- 42:05Yeah, it's a medium take. It's not a hot take.
- 42:07It's a medium take. Here's a question.
- 42:09What do you understand about the hot take, Todd?
- 42:10You and the questions I interpreted hot take to.
- 42:14Be I just came up with it, not it's going to be incendiary.
- 42:21It was my hot take. On this is like without thinking
- 42:24about it, my hot take is I hate it or I love it.
- 42:27I think that's correct actually. So to me, a hot take is
- 42:30something instantaneous. You have to consider it.
- 42:32Wait, have you thought about this Mathis thing?
- 42:34Yes. OK, so it was a medium take, but
- 42:36I think people use it. In the context of it's going to
- 42:39rile the Internet or it's going to, it's a different kind of
- 42:43take. David, Are you ready for this
- 42:45take? And that doesn't make any sense.
- 42:47I've planned this hot. Take for a week so I don't know
- 42:50I. Don't know who's right let's
- 42:52say, but for me it feels like it should be the just hot off the
- 42:56press take well instead of researching.
- 42:58Next week's movie, like we normally do, we'll research that
- 43:01and let everybody know what the truth is.
- 43:03We'll really take our time. All right, it's time to get to
- 43:12the main game. Phillip, my favorite.
- 43:15Moment to this movie this is the bulk of.
- 43:17It do you have any issues with the pacing at all with the
- 43:19movie? Just to you know, No, I thought
- 43:21that. Generally it flowed really well.
- 43:23Yeah, I agree. I mean, I could watch people
- 43:25playing poker for hours, especially wearing tuxedos.
- 43:28My note here is. Honestly I love well dressed
- 43:30people playing poker in casinos for some reason.
- 43:33I thought you would say that. I don't know why I can read
- 43:36people. Going through my selection of
- 43:38movie posters from 25 years ago, stuff from 9899 that I'd gotten
- 43:43from the video store and all throughout the years.
- 43:44One of the posters, The Good Thief.
- 43:47Oh yeah, that's a gorgeous poster.
- 43:48If you remember the and I don't the smoke and it's gorgeous,
- 43:51I'll show it to you. Please do.
- 43:52And it made. Me think, God I.
- 43:53Love watching people play poker and my image throughout all of
- 43:56the scenes was Nick Nolte sitting at the at the table
- 44:00playing his Yeah. Did you find that there wasn't
- 44:02enough? Smoked in this room though.
- 44:03Are you OK with the clean air? I mean, we have asthmatic Mads
- 44:07in there, so we got to respect that.
- 44:08Yeah, that's the. I guess it's the difference
- 44:10between the late 90s, early 2000s and the mid to late 2000s.
- 44:14But no smoking sign. Smoking sign but.
- 44:17Luckily, there's not the. No drinking sign.
- 44:18No, no, no, no. Pretty standard buy in I think.
- 44:21I don't know. Do you go in for 10 mil?
- 44:24It's. A standard.
- 44:25It's a chunk of change we do have.
- 44:27Foreshadowing a little bit we got to input your account number
- 44:30and which she knows Vesper and then he puts in the password
- 44:34bond does yes, that's important to know sure and everybody does
- 44:38that. That's just how you get your buy
- 44:39in. That's how you get paid if you
- 44:40win and then we have of course your buddy Mathis just sitting
- 44:43at the bar having a drink. Just sit in the bar having a
- 44:44drink, observation, some commentary, which I absolutely
- 44:48love. But they start playing.
- 44:50Nothing crazy, just kind of getting the lay of the land, of
- 44:52course, if you will. And we get a break after what I
- 44:55want to say, 4 hours of playing. This is like a game of cricket.
- 44:58It's going to go on for a couple of days.
- 45:00Apparently. Those can be long game.
- 45:01My gosh. Absolutely.
- 45:02But that's no different here. Yep.
- 45:04And Mads Mosey's on up to his room, I guess, maybe to see his
- 45:08lovely lady. Perhaps.
- 45:09Yep. And gets attacked.
- 45:12Yeah. So we have this sort of set.
- 45:13Up that Mads is also being hunted on someone.
- 45:16Yeah, he owes some. Money he owes some people.
- 45:18Some from the whole. The stock issue, he lost, I
- 45:21think it was like 26,000,000 bucks, which is really why he
- 45:24needs to win here. That's right.
- 45:25Yeah. So that's important.
- 45:27That's why he's playing. And then Bond's playing him, so
- 45:29he doesn't get the money because he's funding terrorism.
- 45:32That's right. There you go.
- 45:33Nutshell. Yeah.
- 45:34Complete. But yeah, so he's attacked in a
- 45:36in a decent enough fight sequence in the hotel room.
- 45:38Mine. Yeah.
- 45:39But what I like is you. Can probably imagine is the
- 45:41ramifications of that. So Vesper has sort of been
- 45:44involved in this fight. Seen it happen and I love a good
- 45:47star ball scene. You've gone on record.
- 45:49Yeah, the fugitive. Yes, absolutely.
- 45:52No shooting in. That no shooting in that though,
- 45:54just a quick chase and it's a thing.
- 45:57That I did not expect in this movie is the scene that follows
- 46:01after so so after this battle sequence and she's seen things
- 46:04are certainly clearly outside of her.
- 46:07She's an accountant comfort zone.
- 46:08Exactly right. This is not, not Ben Affleck
- 46:10accounting, regular accounting, just straight up Bond's world is
- 46:15that he No blink of an eye. Kills the guy in the bathroom,
- 46:18kills the guy in the office, kills, kills, kills.
- 46:20No, he's got a license to do it. He he does and it.
- 46:23Doesn't matter to him. But for her, when he returns
- 46:26back to their room, yes, she is sitting in the shower clothes,
- 46:31Unfortunately. Yeah, that's disappointing.
- 46:33But crying? Yeah.
- 46:35Shaken by what she had seen. Not stirred.
- 46:38Not stirred. And I think that that is
- 46:40probably my favorite moment in the movie, which is not that
- 46:42surprising given my. Yeah, your track.
- 46:44Record, but it's. Not a scene I expected to see in
- 46:47this movie. So the humanity of that moment,
- 46:51Yeah, some softness. Was something that had.
- 46:53Up until that point, we're over an hour into the movie.
- 46:56Now you suck on a finger. I have.
- 46:57Not seen any of. This in any of these characters,
- 47:00an empathy level that ultimately won't really be seen throughout
- 47:04the rest of the movie. But in this moment it stops to
- 47:06do it. I thought very effective and I
- 47:08thought very moving. Just little quiet exchange
- 47:10between the two these favorite scene.
- 47:13There you. Go boring.
- 47:15But to me it leads. Back to this chemistry that they
- 47:17had in the train. Yeah, ends up playing a big
- 47:20role. So I'm glad that you're on board
- 47:21with it because crappy if you weren't.
- 47:24Yes. Now, Phil, being a a gentleman,
- 47:27not a scholar from the grades I saw, but you've been into
- 47:32casinos. Yeah.
- 47:33Yeah. Are you aware of this Tell this
- 47:35whole thing like when you're playing poker?
- 47:36OK. It's huge.
- 47:37And do you have a tell? Oh yeah, do tell.
- 47:42The reality is. Certainly in my early poker
- 47:45playing the tell. Was.
- 47:48I just would keep folding until I had a good hand, and I do that
- 47:51too, yeah. Right.
- 47:52And so the. Moment I put any money in, yeah,
- 47:54yeah, they know. They knew that I had something,
- 47:56so they just fuck it. I'm not giving this guy any
- 47:57money. Yeah, right.
- 47:58So I was not very good about reading people or whatever this
- 48:01guy's tells a little bit. More subtle, but not really like
- 48:04because he already has an eye issue.
- 48:06Yes, Bond. Sees the towel, knows it, feels
- 48:09very confident. Shouldn't have told Mathis
- 48:11about? It yeah, shouldn't have.
- 48:12This rule number one, yeah. And as a result, he loses
- 48:15everything. Yeah, big time.
- 48:17And here's the option to get five more million.
- 48:19But she's in charge. Absolutely.
- 48:20The money and she's not having. It no turn off the the.
- 48:23Faucet. And he's very angry at this.
- 48:25He is. Right, look at my eyes.
- 48:27I can beat him. Come on.
- 48:28Nothing. Doing nothing.
- 48:29Nothing's happening. Except, luckily, Yeah, we've got
- 48:32Jeffrey. Right in town.
- 48:33God, because we got Bond going after this guy with a butter
- 48:36knife. This is not going to end well
- 48:37for anybody. No, no one's happy to even
- 48:39consider doing something rash, if you will.
- 48:42He's young. First first mission I suppose.
- 48:44I suppose. But yeah, Jeffrey Wright, we
- 48:46love him. Another Well, I don't think he's
- 48:48very. Good.
- 48:49Wow. I don't know.
- 48:50He just, it doesn't really bring much to anything.
- 48:52I like him. I like him as a person.
- 48:54Happy to see him, but I don't think he brings a big
- 48:58performance or anything. He's a big performance.
- 49:01Pretty good, pretty much does the same thing every.
- 49:02Movie. I don't know, I like him being
- 49:04too. He's great and Ride with the
- 49:05Devil, he's great and Boardwalk Empire is great in Westworld.
- 49:09He's bleeding chips. Though he acknowledges he's not
- 49:11a very good. Poker player doesn't matter if I
- 49:13like him or. Not The point is he's bleeding
- 49:15chips. He thinks Bond has a better
- 49:17chance. Yeah, offers to buy him back.
- 49:19Yeah, and he goes. Yeah, and Matt's, he's on to
- 49:22him. Yes.
- 49:23Yeah, that's going to be a bit of an issue.
- 49:25So he has a bit of a plan himself.
- 49:27Milosha's wife. Don't know her name.
- 49:30Time for a little poison, I believe.
- 49:32Phil. Yeah.
- 49:33This is the whole martini. Conversation which he says I
- 49:35should come up with a better better name for this again
- 49:37inside jokey things yeah that don't mean anything to me yeah.
- 49:41Shaken the shirt and yeah whatever that's true that's now
- 49:44I think about it that is the thing yeah yeah.
- 49:46And. Everybody wants 1.
- 49:47And like, mine's like, can we just play poker here?
- 49:51Yeah, Take it easy. He's impatient.
- 49:53He's impatient. That's right.
- 49:54But he ends. Up being poisoned, yes, not a
- 49:56good. Thing not a good thing.
- 49:58But a good scene. I like it.
- 49:59I like that this sort of pretty well shot.
- 50:01I think he plays it pretty well. Goes to the bathroom.
- 50:04Chugs a bunch of salt water I think, trying to make himself
- 50:07throw up intake stumbling. His way through the I just
- 50:11thought All in all, very well directed.
- 50:12This guy is not a director that again has a history of anything
- 50:15that I have enjoyed or thought to go and seek out or whatever
- 50:18else, but I think he handled this movie pretty well.
- 50:20I'm really, the tone was solid, the style of shots so forth, and
- 50:23I thought this scene in particular stand out as being
- 50:25pretty entertaining, leading to the defibrillator at the end.
- 50:28Yeah, finally we get a. Little bit of gadgetry here,
- 50:31yeah. Which is just really an
- 50:32emergency kit. Yeah, not.
- 50:34I mean, I'm sure this thing exists in like kind of normal
- 50:37world as opposed to spy world or whatever, but I'm sure you can
- 50:40get. One there, yeah, shoppers.
- 50:42But yeah, little tense, little tension, because he's about to
- 50:46pass out and the thing's not connected.
- 50:48That's right. This is the.
- 50:49Only as much as I like that scene and the way it plays out,
- 50:52this is one of the problems of the character and of movies like
- 50:55this, is that at no point do I think that anything bad is going
- 50:59to happen to Bond. Well, that's not.
- 51:00Care because I said. If the movie kind of presents it
- 51:03in a way that's delivered well, I'm not just waiting, going
- 51:05like, Nope, yeah, not happening, right.
- 51:08But the tension or the levels of tension is a little bit
- 51:12dissipated. That's a good point.
- 51:13That's a good. Point, but I like it
- 51:15nonetheless. So cool.
- 51:16Exactly. I thought it was really.
- 51:17Well done. I think that she saves him and
- 51:19he gets up and he wants to go back to the back to the game
- 51:22like he's. Already left once and had to
- 51:24change because he had blood all over his shirt from murdering
- 51:27people. And then he's coming like yeah,
- 51:30he's a Corche ball. Which a funny little line.
- 51:32You know, that last hand nearly killed me.
- 51:34That is funny. Kind of.
- 51:35Kind of cute, but we. Get to the point.
- 51:37Where everyone's sort of revealing the big hand.
- 51:39This is it. We got about four players.
- 51:41The first guy has a couple pairs.
- 51:43I think cases over nines. I think cases.
- 51:45Full You know, you know. What's interesting how every
- 51:47time someone reveals is it's a little bit better.
- 51:49Of course, there's a little a little bit of, you know, Yeah,
- 51:52yeah. Drama.
- 51:52That's what it's called. Dave, it's called drama.
- 51:56It's what makes fucking movies go touché. 2 show making
- 51:59storytelling. And then there's a full house.
- 52:03Yeah. And then we get 2 full houses. 2
- 52:05full houses. One's better than the other.
- 52:07Aces are better than kings. Yes, I know that.
- 52:10But our good friend James, straight flush, straight flush,
- 52:14not easy to get. No, not at all, not at all.
- 52:16But he got it. Yep, statistically.
- 52:18Speaking is pretty hard to get, but that knocks.
- 52:21Out Mads and he is mad he's not happy.
- 52:23No, he's not happy. He's problematic at best.
- 52:26But. I love it.
- 52:26I love the scene poker. Yeah, high stakes.
- 52:29I'm all over it. Yeah, I enjoyed it.
- 52:30I mean, I don't. Watch, I've never watched
- 52:32Rounders, which is pretty much Oh yeah, sure, I imagine very
- 52:34focused. It's gonna come off the shelf
- 52:36because. That's a weird movie for me.
- 52:37OK, It'd be interesting to talk about.
- 52:39All right. Fair enough.
- 52:39Fair enough. But we have that sort of point
- 52:42of the. Where we think it's sort of
- 52:44over, but we both know, even as a first time viewer, I'm sure
- 52:47you knew it wasn't it. You sort of think, OK, the game
- 52:51is over, but what's the consequence of the game being
- 52:54over? Obviously Master doesn't have
- 52:55his money. Bond clearly made a fool of the
- 52:57Shifra. Yes, you don't want to do that.
- 52:59So there's consequences to. Come Mathis has been revealed to
- 53:02be exposed to be the bad guy. Sort of yes at this.
- 53:06Point. They've explained that he.
- 53:07Gave the tell the tell. And yada yada yada, Yeah.
- 53:12And then? We have a really challenging
- 53:14sequence to watch and to imagine.
- 53:17Yes, I know exactly. What you're talking about, so I
- 53:21have to ask you. As a married man at.
- 53:24What point in your? Honeymoon Did you get tied to a
- 53:28chair fully naked with a bit of whipping action happening on the
- 53:33actually by that? Point mine were already in a
- 53:35jar, so none of that already really safe.
- 53:41Yeah, harmless, sealed up, done. You know, when I first watched
- 53:46it, I didn't clue into what was happening.
- 53:48Okay. And then I realized, oh, wait a
- 53:50minute, they cut out the bottom of the chair of the chair.
- 53:53Man, I get it. And he has some fun with it,
- 53:56despite the pain. He tries to, you know, get an
- 53:59itch. Yeah.
- 54:02What would have happened if Mr. White didn't come in?
- 54:04You know, we'll never know. Yeah, that.
- 54:06We can envision it. We can think about it in our
- 54:09minds. Yes, yes, as I often do.
- 54:11But yeah, a little bit of luck there.
- 54:13Yeah. This is a sequence where I.
- 54:15Really like the torture stuff. Yeah, I.
- 54:18Really hated that it ended. You want some more?
- 54:21One more web. I mean he's about to feed the
- 54:24balls to him. So I think it's the point we
- 54:25need to someones got to put a stop.
- 54:28This is a fundamental problem I have with.
- 54:29It is. Mads is the villain for all
- 54:32intensive purposes. Everything that we've seen in
- 54:34this movie is Mad's the bad guy. He's the main bad guy.
- 54:36Right, correct. Maybe it's a trope of the
- 54:38series, right? I've only seen this one so but
- 54:41the fact that he gets a bull in his head with only 30 minutes
- 54:44left in the movie after all that we've been watching, I was
- 54:47thinking a this villain sucks. Like as a bad guy, he's no
- 54:52threat. He doesn't, other than the
- 54:54whipping like the torture scene, actually kind of weak.
- 54:57In a few spots. Right.
- 54:58He's getting beat up. He's getting beat up.
- 55:00Exactly. He's got an eye thing.
- 55:01Yeah. So as a villain, I'm thinking
- 55:03like, there's no dastardly plan. There's no, you know, I think
- 55:07Doctor Evil. Doctor Evil.
- 55:08Exactly. Right.
- 55:09It's my only. Kind of frame of.
- 55:10Reference right like who is the big bad and the fact that like
- 55:14I'm watching this movie even at that point kind of wondering who
- 55:16is this guy and why is he a threat to the point where he's
- 55:20removed take him out he's. Out within 30 minutes.
- 55:23Left I'm just like the movie lost a little bit of I don't
- 55:27want to say credibility, but just interest.
- 55:29I was just sort of like, what am I watching?
- 55:30Why did I even care to begin with?
- 55:32And what they sort of replace him with.
- 55:34It's a big isn't that interesting.
- 55:36We talked before earlier where Bond is girls and travel log and
- 55:41gadgets. A fourth thing, I suppose,
- 55:44having not seen any of them, it is the villains.
- 55:47I think about Christopher Walken.
- 55:48He was a bad guy in one of them. Jonathan Price was in one of the
- 55:51Brosnan movies. He was a bad guy, but much
- 55:55different character than he. Was in Glengarry but I don't
- 55:58know the. Villains quite so much.
- 56:00But anyway, I felt like this was a real anticlimactic kind of way
- 56:03to happen. The scene and the fact that it
- 56:06gets him out of a bind is sort of like, yeah, I mean, that's
- 56:09movies again. You have to do it you.
- 56:11Said it's not anybody, but it's sort of like.
- 56:14You kind of released the with 30 minutes left.
- 56:17What's left to do? This is more of a you thing to
- 56:19me. Thing when that you typically
- 56:21has an. Issue like this, I need the
- 56:22hero, you need the bad guy. I just need the reason to be if
- 56:26you're going to be a bad guy, let it be a bad guy.
- 56:29He's bad guy. He's not very nice.
- 56:31So he's he's bad? I never got the impression.
- 56:33He was that bad. Well, nonetheless, he doesn't
- 56:35even. Do the killing like.
- 56:36You're saying like White did the killing or the guy he gets beat
- 56:38up like he's not anyway. Well, regardless, Phil.
- 56:41He's been dispatched. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:43Same with Mathis. Not yet.
- 56:44Not yet, no. He's fine.
- 56:47Mathis is fine. I don't want you to worry about
- 56:49Mathis. Sure.
- 56:50OK. For sure.
- 56:50Your best buddy is going to be a OK.
- 56:57Now you've talked about the chemistry between Jimmy, if I
- 57:02can call him Jimmy and her Vesper.
- 57:05Vesper. Yeah.
- 57:06Yeah. And they have a scene together.
- 57:09He's recovering. So let's let me lay it out for
- 57:11you, maybe in layman's terms so you can understand he's in a
- 57:15chair on a lawn. With a bottom sitting.
- 57:21Yeah, he's got that. Going for him, the gentleman, I
- 57:24believe he was Swiss, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 57:26Not that it's very important. Comes and they do the whole
- 57:29money thing. He won 10 million bucks
- 57:31passwords in and they kind of fall in love really right then
- 57:35and there. His armor is down, Philip.
- 57:38Yeah. Do you have armor?
- 57:40And if so, do you wear it? No.
- 57:43OK. I thought maybe you had
- 57:44something in the closet there. No.
- 57:46All right. No armor.
- 57:47For me, no. OK, no.
- 57:49Just like an emotional armor sometimes, yeah.
- 57:51If you really have to get to know me to every once in a
- 57:54while, I'll open it up for you. Yeah.
- 57:56I don't care. He he claims.
- 57:59He claims his armor's gone. Yeah.
- 58:02They they're. Gonna kiss.
- 58:03They do kiss. And thus begins this whole sort
- 58:08of do I want to say a montage? Not quite a montage.
- 58:12But I would say it's a it's a bit of an epilogue.
- 58:14Yeah. OK, there we go.
- 58:15Impression that the movie's over.
- 58:18Yeah, The bad guy's been dispatched.
- 58:20Yeah, they're on the beach. They're.
- 58:21Having a great time, he says. I love you.
- 58:23Puts that Maza ball out there. Yeah.
- 58:25And they're just in love, basically.
- 58:28Yeah, I've talked already about. The sort of chemistry.
- 58:30Between the two, yeah. Did I buy it?
- 58:31That's what you're asking, right?
- 58:33Because I know I bring this up. Yeah, Pretty regularly.
- 58:36Yeah. Not quite quite.
- 58:38It was close. Trunk.
- 58:39No trunk. What's your?
- 58:40What's your? Take on now had they been in the
- 58:42actually those two in a trunk at this point I think that would
- 58:45have actually helped OK yeah I thought their chemistry was just
- 58:48fine I thought taking it to that next big stage I felt like there
- 58:52was a bit of a gap OK like he's. So ready to commit to her.
- 58:56Like with the agency, there needs to be a few dates.
- 58:58Here first, you know, let's go out, let's see them.
- 59:00Let's go have some chicken minute for a minute, yeah?
- 59:02There we go. But nonetheless, I mean, it
- 59:04didn't, you know, at this point I'm I'm in too deep, I'm too
- 59:07invested in this movie to really care too much about that.
- 59:10But we are coming up in the last 20 minutes.
- 59:13Yeah, her saying. Things like you're more than of
- 59:15a man than anyone I've ever met. Yeah, that was a little.
- 59:17Bit there's a little bit of. Like, you know, young love or
- 59:20like maybe you are feeling something like that, but that's
- 59:22a little extreme for maybe where they're at.
- 59:24Yeah, I mean that's happened to. Me, like girls have said, of
- 59:26course to me, no, no girls are saying.
- 59:28But you also find out later that that could also be a little
- 59:31manipulating. A situation at what?
- 59:33Point. Or did you ever suspect Vesper
- 59:38as being a little off with her intentions?
- 59:40No, no, no. Because you have the red
- 59:42herring, what turns out to be the red herring of Mathis,
- 59:45right? So he is the double agent.
- 59:47He's the turncoat. He's the one that's on the
- 59:50inside that's supposed to be not, you know, whatever else.
- 59:52So. So you were fooled.
- 59:55Totally. Never even really.
- 59:56Considered I bought this relationship pretty hard.
- 59:58Like, I was like, yeah, this makes sense.
- 1:00:00I watched the movie. Twice.
- 1:00:02And I did buy into the whole herb, doing things that you
- 1:00:06wouldn't out of character. The second time, I really paid
- 1:00:09attention to all the dialogue of it.
- 1:00:10Yeah, yeah. What they were.
- 1:00:12Saying that she didn't really have a choice.
- 1:00:14And, you know, her intention wasn't to hurt anybody.
- 1:00:16Yeah, but she was in a bit of a, she didn't bind, definitely.
- 1:00:19Definitely. In a bind, Yeah.
- 1:00:20She didn't knot. She got this.
- 1:00:22She got a knot, yeah. Exactly what do you think about
- 1:00:25the guy with the missing sunglass lens?
- 1:00:28Why would you have that look? Like put the other one in what?
- 1:00:31I don't know. I didn't get that well, I mean
- 1:00:33just. To look evil.
- 1:00:34It's very common if you're have like a glass eye in some cases,
- 1:00:38or a lazy eye or things like that.
- 1:00:40Yeah. You want to train it so you have
- 1:00:42glasses. OK, that's just interesting.
- 1:00:44Choice to put that character in in the movie.
- 1:00:46Well, I know, I think it's. Basically, because you've got
- 1:00:48Mads who's got the eye thing. So there's almost like this sort
- 1:00:52of yeah, reality of did he really die?
- 1:00:54Or like, I think that's playing on that because he didn't look.
- 1:00:56Anything like Mads at all? Got an eye thing?
- 1:00:59Got a hat? I have a question.
- 1:01:01Before we get too far along here, that.
- 1:01:04While I. Didn't notice or think of
- 1:01:06anything untoward when it came to Vesper.
- 1:01:10What I did notice throughout the entire movie was the amount of
- 1:01:15Sony products. Did you notice that I noticed
- 1:01:17the? The phone, Sony Air, the iPhone?
- 1:01:19Yeah, the vow. Laptop that he sends the e-mail
- 1:01:22from yeah there was two other examples of Sony like products
- 1:01:27and I remember that Sony owns Columbia.
- 1:01:29I was just happy not seeing. An iPhone?
- 1:01:31Sure. Exactly.
- 1:01:32You know what I mean? Absolutely.
- 1:01:33Now, when you look back on everything that's been said at
- 1:01:37this point, as far as we can tell, everything is still hunky
- 1:01:39Dory. They're in the hotel room and
- 1:01:41they need a little bit of cash. He's got to do the supply run.
- 1:01:45Yes. And she's going to take care of
- 1:01:46the bank. Yeah.
- 1:01:48Gets a weird phone call. Though.
- 1:01:50Yeah, about the money from the. Swiss guy, yeah.
- 1:01:52And then M. Calls.
- 1:01:53Yeah, she's saying my. Guy's here.
- 1:01:54Where's the money? Yeah, you're going to deposit
- 1:01:56soon. I'm not.
- 1:01:57I'm not worried, but yeah. But as far as Bond's concerned,
- 1:02:00it's already taken care of. It's taken.
- 1:02:01Care of SO. That check cleared they.
- 1:02:04Brought that. Contract.
- 1:02:04Track down to the bank. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:06Ask Williamson. He knows exactly.
- 1:02:09He took care of it. And.
- 1:02:12As far as Bond's concerned, he's been double crossed.
- 1:02:14Yeah, again. Yep.
- 1:02:16Jeez, poor guy. Yeah.
- 1:02:17Yeah. And such a break.
- 1:02:19You can't. Luckily, she's wearing a red
- 1:02:21dress. That helps.
- 1:02:22Yes, you said earlier, right? You find that thing and you're
- 1:02:25going to track her down exactly so we think.
- 1:02:27That she's turned, yes, she's bad now.
- 1:02:30Knowing what we know now when he's chasing her or following
- 1:02:34her wasn't a chase. She was a pure follow.
- 1:02:36Yeah, he gets seen. OK.
- 1:02:38Yeah. She was about to get let go.
- 1:02:40Here's your money. She walks away, mission
- 1:02:43accomplished. She lives, he gets noticed.
- 1:02:46Oh, I got to take her hostage now.
- 1:02:48And ultimately, that leads to her demise as machine guns.
- 1:02:52Coming in now too. Like the whole thing blows out
- 1:02:54of proportion bond. Is smarter and doesn't get seen.
- 1:02:57She lives. Yeah, probably.
- 1:02:59And he'll find. Out oh I had to do it OK we can
- 1:03:02repair the this trust because of the whole thing anyways she dies
- 1:03:08she want to talk about I hated the action sequence.
- 1:03:11Did you? I thought it was.
- 1:03:12I was. I was.
- 1:03:13Done. At that point I was like, wrap
- 1:03:14this up, I don't need this. It's trying to be cool with the
- 1:03:17whole, with the water and the water rise in the building
- 1:03:20falling. Yeah, it's clever.
- 1:03:22Sure, I'm good. Her choice to kind of sacrifice
- 1:03:27herself seemed a. Little.
- 1:03:29Out of line with where we're at, Yeah, I still think she can.
- 1:03:33Live. Yeah.
- 1:03:34You know, this could have been a thing, yeah.
- 1:03:36I knew it. Has to happen because I've seen
- 1:03:38the rest of the movies so I understand it.
- 1:03:41Sure, from that's in. Hindsight, it doesn't have to
- 1:03:43happen. She could live and then the
- 1:03:44movies are just something else better.
- 1:03:46Actually better maybe right? Like I don't know how it.
- 1:03:48Factors into the other ones. I just feel like what a it just
- 1:03:52was an interesting choice to to have her kill herself.
- 1:03:54I know they want to set. Up his character character to go
- 1:03:57into revenge mode so keep that in mind but I did think it was
- 1:04:01shot well. Like her death scene was good
- 1:04:05that way the underwater. It was fairly evocative too.
- 1:04:07I just was like I don't know why this has happened but it
- 1:04:09happens. It happens.
- 1:04:11We can't change it now and they made a very strong point of
- 1:04:14letting us know she wasn't really a bad person, she was
- 1:04:16just putting it back. Yeah, they do try and say.
- 1:04:18That right, and the whole conversation.
- 1:04:19M's having on the phone, he still doesn't care.
- 1:04:22He still says the B word. Yeah, it says.
- 1:04:23Job's done. Bitch is dead.
- 1:04:25Yeah, quote UN quote. Yeah, and then he goes.
- 1:04:28The phone looks at it. Sony Ericsson, Yeah.
- 1:04:31And finds out that her last message or whatever was sent to
- 1:04:34this Mr. White person. Well, he's thinking at this.
- 1:04:36Point She left the phone there on purpose because it's a cry
- 1:04:39for, you know, sure, I've done avenge me kind of thing.
- 1:04:42Exactly. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:04:44And he does. So we see Mr. White on a
- 1:04:46beautiful island. Gorgeous.
- 1:04:48God damn, Denver. I think, yeah, he might have
- 1:04:50been right. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:51Bahamas in Denver is the yeah next spot on that travel log.
- 1:04:55Right by the water in Denver, by the ocean.
- 1:04:59And he shoots him. In the leg, he gets shot in the
- 1:05:01leg, I should say I thought it was the foot, but it.
- 1:05:03Looks like it was the leg. I thought it was the foot.
- 1:05:05I don't know femur. And then we get the iconic line.
- 1:05:10He's in his tux. Yeah, that's the one.
- 1:05:11Standing over. High ground, yeah.
- 1:05:15And. Introduces himself and then we
- 1:05:18go to Black. I'd say two things.
- 1:05:20First of all I thought who the fuck is Mr. White and why do I
- 1:05:24care given the fact that we spent the whole movie with this
- 1:05:26Mads person and this Mr. Wiper seems to be periphery at best.
- 1:05:30I didn't really kind of clock him throughout.
- 1:05:33Like as a you're so small minded, Phil.
- 1:05:35As a guy. So the reveal, if you can call
- 1:05:38it that, didn't really excite me or leave me, you know, like, who
- 1:05:42is this guy kind of thing? However, I love that he gets
- 1:05:46shot. I love the introduction, going
- 1:05:48to black. And ultimately I found myself
- 1:05:51intrigued. This is a Halloween.
- 1:05:53Situation, yeah, I was like. I want to see the next one
- 1:05:55because there it is. I thought this was really good,
- 1:05:58like, you know, not exceptional. There's there's faults and flaws
- 1:06:01and, you know, things that, you know, didn't really connect and
- 1:06:03yeah, not a masterpiece, not a masterpiece, not perfection, but
- 1:06:06like I thought really engaging, really well put together.
- 1:06:09And as much as the plotting is a little bit loose for my taste.
- 1:06:14Yeah. For your taste.
- 1:06:16You have a taste. I thought it it delivered on the
- 1:06:18things that I expected it to yeah, for that type of movie and
- 1:06:21wasn't deficient enough in the other things to to hurt it.
- 1:06:25So I was like, I'm I found myself completely engaged.
- 1:06:28So by the end of it, I was like, I'm into whatever the next of
- 1:06:31this is. Like I don't know how they play
- 1:06:33into one another or if you have a niche.
- 1:06:35I just thought. Like, yeah, like it was maybe
- 1:06:37it's like Halloween where it's sort of like, I have no idea
- 1:06:39what the next one of these is. And if my understanding of
- 1:06:41Blonde is it's just another, you know, new story, new story, new
- 1:06:45story, new villain. Yeah.
- 1:06:47Like Reset. The.
- 1:06:48Clock and do it again and reset the clock and do it again in a
- 1:06:50different town with a different girl and a different villain and
- 1:06:53like, that's your go to France. You go to like kind of.
- 1:06:56Rinse, repeat. But if this was made, I thought
- 1:06:59was such quality that I'd be curious to see what the next
- 1:07:01version of that is. So I'm, I'm into it, I really
- 1:07:05enjoy it. Well, I guess the question is,
- 1:07:06is it going? To be better than Halloween too.
- 1:07:08The next one, Yeah, sure, that is going.
- 1:07:09To be a question. Well, maybe we'll find out soon.
- 1:07:11Yeah, could do now, David, you. You have some experiences, you
- 1:07:15said, coming off of the Brosnans into this you're familiar with
- 1:07:19where's this rank now, kind of having rewatched it back in the
- 1:07:22mix, similar? To what you said, it's just a
- 1:07:24really solid movie film wise. Like it hits all the beats, well
- 1:07:28paced, interesting enough. I'm I'm good with the plot.
- 1:07:31I think it was well edited. I think it did the big scenes
- 1:07:34when it was time to do a big scene, quieted down a little
- 1:07:37bit, had some good dialogue, pushed the story forward, wasn't
- 1:07:41too confusing. I find sometimes these can be a
- 1:07:43little confusing. So intricate a plot.
- 1:07:45Yeah. A lot of players, a lot of names
- 1:07:46being thrown. Mr. Wade, who is this guy?
- 1:07:48I don't know. Well, I see.
- 1:07:50I have some knowledge because obviously I've seen all of them.
- 1:07:53And I will say, you know, this is not a hot take.
- 1:07:55I've known this for a long time. I do consider this probably one
- 1:07:58of the better Bond movies that I've watched.
- 1:08:00Maybe not the best. Time will tell.
- 1:08:04Definitely not the worst. So it was overall pretty solid
- 1:08:07film. I was happy to watch it.
- 1:08:09I'm really happy to hear that you you enjoyed it.
- 1:08:11Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:08:12Much. More than I thought I was going
- 1:08:13to. Wonderful, I think.
- 1:08:14That's a big take away. Yeah, I'm happy to do it.
