- 0:12Hello, friends, it's Sean here. Hello.
- 0:15Good to have your company at the beginning of a new week.
- 0:17It's Monday, it's the 15th of July.
- 0:20And here we are diving back into the book of John.
- 0:25Yes, John, that old disciple reflecting on his life with
- 0:29Jesus. And God uses this man and these
- 0:33words to communicate truth to us.
- 0:35And the thing that John has, that none of the other gospels
- 0:38have is these I am statements, these famous statements that he
- 0:44shares, Jesus sharing. I am.
- 0:46And today we're going to hear about I am the Good Shepherd as
- 0:51he works these analogies into Jesus identity and his role and
- 0:56what his purpose is. Fascinating, deep theological
- 1:00stuff for us to wrap our heads around and understand more about
- 1:04who our God is. And that's what we do today.
- 1:07So let us put down everything that is to come, everything that
- 1:11has been and everything that might even just be going on
- 1:15around us at the moment, and draw our hearts and minds toward
- 1:19God and His Word and everything He's going to teach us.
- 1:24Ah, how great, let's do it together.
- 1:29Let's read John chapter 10. I tell you the truth, anyone who
- 1:44sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold rather than going
- 1:47through the gate must surely be a thief and a robber.
- 1:51But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the
- 1:54sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate
- 1:57for him and the sheep recognise his voice and come to him.
- 2:01He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
- 2:05After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them
- 2:09and they follow him because they know his voice.
- 2:12They won't follow a stranger. They will run from Him because
- 2:15they don't know His voice. Those who heard Jesus used this
- 2:19illustration didn't understand what he meant, so He explained
- 2:22it to them. I tell you the truth, I am the
- 2:26gate for the sheep. All who came before me were
- 2:30thieves and robbers, but the true sheep did not listen to
- 2:33them. Yes, I am the gate.
- 2:36Those who come in through me will be saved.
- 2:40They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
- 2:44The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.
- 2:48My purpose is to give them rich and satisfying life.
- 2:54I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd sacrifices his
- 2:59life for the sheep. A hired hand will run when he
- 3:03sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep
- 3:05because they don't belong to him and he isn't their shepherd.
- 3:08And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.
- 3:12The hired hand runs away because he's working only for the money
- 3:16and doesn't really care about the sheep.
- 3:19I am the Good Shepherd, I know my own sheep and they know me,
- 3:25just as my Father knows me and I know the Father.
- 3:29So I sacrificed my life for the sheep.
- 3:33I have other sheep too that are not in this sheep fold.
- 3:36I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice and
- 3:40there will be one flock with one shepherd.
- 3:44The Father loves me because I sacrificed my life so I may take
- 3:48it back again. No one can take my life from me.
- 3:52I sacrifice it voluntarily, for I have the authority to lay it
- 3:57down when I want to, and also to take it up again, for this is
- 4:03what my Father has commanded. When he said these things, the
- 4:07people were again divided in their opinion about him.
- 4:10Some said he's demon possessed and out of his mind.
- 4:14Why listen to a man like that? Others said.
- 4:18This doesn't sound like a man possessed by a demon.
- 4:21Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?
- 4:26It was now winter and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of
- 4:30Hanukkah, the festival of dedication.
- 4:33He was in the temple, walking through the section known as
- 4:36Solomon's Colonnade. The people surrounded him and
- 4:40asked, How long are you going to keep us in suspense?
- 4:43If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly, Jesus replied.
- 4:48I have already told you, and you don't believe me.
- 4:52The proof is the work I do in my Father's name.
- 4:55But you don't believe me, because you are not my sheep.
- 4:58My sheep listened to my voice. I know them and they follow me.
- 5:04I give them eternal life and they will never perish.
- 5:08No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them
- 5:12to me and he is more powerful than anyone else.
- 5:16No one can snatch them from the Father's hand, and the Father
- 5:20and I are one. Once again, the people picked up
- 5:25stones to kill him, Jesus said at my father's direction.
- 5:30I've done many good works. For which one are you going to
- 5:33stone me? They replied.
- 5:35Where's stoning? You're not for any good work,
- 5:37but for blasphemy. You, a mere man, claimed to be
- 5:42God, Jesus replied. It is written in your own
- 5:47scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people.
- 5:51I say you are gods and you know that the scriptures cannot be
- 5:56altered. So if those people who received
- 5:59God's message were called gods, why do you call it blasphemy
- 6:03when I say I am the Son of God? After all, the Father set me
- 6:09apart and sent me into the world.
- 6:12Don't believe me unless I carry out my Father's work.
- 6:17But if I do His work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous
- 6:21works I have done, even if you don't believe me, then you will
- 6:26know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the
- 6:31Father. Once again they tried to arrest
- 6:34him, but he got away and left them.
- 6:38He went beyond the Jordan River, near the place where John was
- 6:41first baptising, and stayed there a while and many followed
- 6:46him. John didn't perform miraculous
- 6:49signs, they remarked to one another.
- 6:51But everything he said about this man has come true, and many
- 6:56who were there believed in Jesus.
- 7:09We love you, Jesus. We thank you for your teaching.
- 7:15We thank you that even though you are the Son of God, sent by
- 7:20the Almighty God to save us, that here you are as personal
- 7:27and close as ever. Thank you that you are a God who
- 7:32loves us and draws to us so that we can understand who you are
- 7:38and that we see these people who are witnessing the things you
- 7:42did and they could not help but be changed and believe in you.
- 7:50Thank you for the faith that you've put in our hearts, that
- 7:53we too can believe in you, and that we can open our arms and
- 7:59receive this incredible gift of your love and your forgiveness.
- 8:05We want to live our lives for you, and we pray all of this in
- 8:10your precious and holy name, Amen.
