- 0:00The sun will rise tomorrow. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad with 12121 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:11Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:13yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:15Charlie Becker. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:19You think a loss means something is over, but upgraded think he
- 0:21knows losing is the price of playing?
- 0:23Here's the story. It's November 16th, 1957 in
- 0:29Norman, OK. The football game has been over
- 0:32for an hour, but the fans are still sitting in their seats.
- 0:36The final score was Notre Dame 7, Oklahoma 0.
- 0:41Bud Wilkinson's Sooners had won 47 straight games, and when it
- 0:46ended, the fans didn't leave. They sat stunned in the stadium.
- 0:50In the locker room. Wilkinson didn't blame anybody.
- 0:53He said there wasn't anything mysterious about it.
- 0:56We just got beat. Then he told his players, you
- 0:59have done something no other major college football team has
- 1:02ever done before or will ever do again.
- 1:05You've won 47 straight football games, and I'm proud of you.
- 1:09The only ones who never lose are the ones who never play.
- 1:12Notre Dame coach Terry Brennan said after the loss that Bud
- 1:15Wilkinson shook his hand. He hated to lose, but he was a
- 1:19perfect gentleman. No blame, no mystery, just pride
- 1:22in his players and a handshake. He handled the loss with grace.
- 1:27I bring the Oklahoma streak up because of yesterday, another
- 1:31streak ended. I'm a Hoosier, that's what
- 1:34people from Indiana are called. My daughter goes to Indiana
- 1:37University right now, so I'm invested in more ways than one.
- 1:41Indiana lost a close one. They came down the last play,
- 1:454th and four, and it didn't go our way.
- 1:48One of the players, Charlie Becker, said it doesn't feel
- 1:51like it's a real thing right now.
- 1:54Losing doesn't feel real when you're used to winning.
- 1:57But listen to what coach, what coach Signetti said after the
- 2:00loss. We just didn't make it happen.
- 2:03So it's a hard one to swallow, but sometimes you learn from it
- 2:06and move on. And then he told his team, the
- 2:10sun comes up tomorrow. This is bigger than sports.
- 2:15Every time you make the call, ask the question, start the
- 2:19business or love somebody, you put a loss on the table.
- 2:23That's the deal. The only way to never lose is to
- 2:27sit in the stands. Winners lose more than losers
- 2:30lose because winners keep showing up.
- 2:33The better story to tell yourself is I'd rather lose
- 2:37playing than never lose watching The sun comes up tomorrow get
- 2:42back in the game. You will stop fearing losing
- 2:46when you trust the rising. Tell me a story of a loss that
- 2:50taught you something to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 2:54Send someone to text and tell them.
- 2:55Just imagine what you'd try if losing didn't scare you.
- 2:59Go try it. The sun comes up tomorrow.
