- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. The Bible Study Podcast, Episode 994. Today, the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the book of
- 0:11Speaker 1: Exodus with Chapter 38. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm your host, Chris Christensen. This is, again, going to
- 0:26Speaker 1: be another quick episode here Not a lot of commentary here.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We're going to finish doing the things that they're making
- 0:32Speaker 1: to set up the tabernacle and all the related things.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And then next week, we're going to put this all together.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But first, a word from this sponsor. Exodus 38, the
- 0:43Speaker 1: altar of burnt offering. They built the altar of burnt
- 0:46Speaker 1: offering of acacia wood, three cubits high. It was square,
- 0:49Speaker 1: five cubits long, and five cubits wide. They made a
- 0:52Speaker 1: horn at each of the four corners, said that the
- 0:54Speaker 1: horns on the altar were of one piece. and they
- 0:57Speaker 1: overlaid the altar with bronze. They made all its utensils
- 1:00Speaker 1: of bronze, its pots, shovels, sprinkling bowls, meat forks, and
- 1:04Speaker 1: fire pans. They made a grating for the altar, a
- 1:07Speaker 1: bronze network to be under its ledge, halfway up the altar.
- 1:11Speaker 1: They cast bronze rings to hold the poles for the
- 1:14Speaker 1: four corners of the bronze grating. They made the poles
- 1:17Speaker 1: of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze. They inserted
- 1:20Speaker 1: the poles into the rings so that they could be
- 1:22Speaker 1: on the sides of the altar for carrying it. They
- 1:24Speaker 1: made it hollow out of boards. So again, we've got
- 1:27Speaker 1: a portable altar here where we're going to do burnt offerings,
- 1:31Speaker 1: where we're going to cook the meat of animals that
- 1:34Speaker 1: have been sacrificed, and that's what they built. The Basin
- 1:38Speaker 1: for Washing. They made the bronze basin and its bronze
- 1:41Speaker 1: stand from the mirrors of the women who served at
- 1:44Speaker 1: the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. I thought that
- 1:47Speaker 1: was interesting. I didn't remember that detail, that they had
- 1:51Speaker 1: used the bronze of mirrors to make the basin for washing. Interesting.
- 1:55Speaker 1: The courtyard. Next they made the courtyard. The south side
- 1:58Speaker 1: was 100 cubits long and had curtains of finely twisted
- 2:01Speaker 1: linen with 20 poles and 20 bronze bases and with
- 2:06Speaker 1: silver hooks and bands on the posts. The north side
- 2:09Speaker 1: was also 100 cubits long and had 20 posts and
- 2:12Speaker 1: 20 bronze bases with silver hooks and bands on the posts.
- 2:17Speaker 1: The west end was 50 cubits wide and had curtains
- 2:19Speaker 1: with 10 poles and 10 bases with silver hooks and
- 2:23Speaker 1: bands on the posts. The east end Toward the sunrise
- 2:25Speaker 1: was also 50 cubits wide. Curtains 15 cubits long were
- 2:30Speaker 1: on the one entrance with three posts and three bases,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and curtains 15 cubits long were on the other end
- 2:36Speaker 1: of the entrance to the courtyard with three posts and
- 2:38Speaker 1: three bases. All the curtains around the courtyard were a
- 2:41Speaker 1: finely twisted linen. The bases of the posts were bronze.
- 2:45Speaker 1: The hooks and bands of the posts were silver, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: their tops were overlaid with silver, so the posts of
- 2:51Speaker 1: the courtyard had silver bands. Curtains for the entrance to
- 2:54Speaker 1: the courtyard were made of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn
- 2:57Speaker 1: and finely twisted linen, the work of an embroiderer. It
- 3:00Speaker 1: was 20 cubits long and like the curtains of the courtyard,
- 3:03Speaker 1: five cubits high. With four posts and four bronze bases,
- 3:07Speaker 1: their hooks and bands were silver and their tops were
- 3:10Speaker 1: overlaid with silver. All the tent pegs of the tabernacle
- 3:13Speaker 1: and the surrounding courtyard were bronze. So again, we're making
- 3:18Speaker 1: a square outline or a rectangular outline rather than that
- 3:22Speaker 1: is walls made with just linen because this has to
- 3:27Speaker 1: be portable, but it has a structure that there is
- 3:30Speaker 1: an inside and an outside, and the inside is the courtyard.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It has no roof over it, and the tabernacle would
- 3:37Speaker 1: be inside this. But again, as they are moving, all
- 3:39Speaker 1: of this is going to be disassembled. You take things
- 3:41Speaker 1: off the poles, you pack it up, and you move on.
- 3:46Speaker 1: The materials used. These are the amounts of materials used
- 3:48Speaker 1: for the tabernacle. the tabernacle of the covenant law, which
- 3:52Speaker 1: were recorded at Moses' command by the Levites under the
- 3:55Speaker 1: direction of Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest. Bazalel, son
- 3:59Speaker 1: of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,
- 4:02Speaker 1: made everything the Lord commanded Moses. With him was Ohaliab,
- 4:06Speaker 1: son of Hesamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver
- 4:09Speaker 1: and designer, and an embroiderer in blue, purple, and scarlet
- 4:12Speaker 1: yarn and fine linen. The total amount of gold from
- 4:15Speaker 1: the wave offering used for all the work on the
- 4:18Speaker 1: sanctuary was was 29 talents and 730 shekels, according to
- 4:23Speaker 1: the sanctuary shekel. The silver obtained from those of the
- 4:27Speaker 1: community who were counted in the census was 100 talents
- 4:31Speaker 1: and 1,775 shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel. One becca
- 4:38Speaker 1: per person, that is half a shekel, according to the
- 4:41Speaker 1: sanctuary shekel, from everyone who had crossed over to those
- 4:45Speaker 1: counted 20 years old or more, a total of 603,550 men.
- 4:51Speaker 1: The 100 talents of silver were used to cast the
- 4:54Speaker 1: bases for the sanctuary and for the curtain, the 100
- 4:57Speaker 1: bases from the 100 talents, one talent for each base.
- 5:02Speaker 1: They used the 1,775 shekels to make the hooks for
- 5:06Speaker 1: the posts, to overlay the tops of the posts, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: to make their bands. The bronze from the wave offering
- 5:12Speaker 1: was 70 talents and 2,400 shekels. They used it to
- 5:16Speaker 1: make the bases for the entrances to the tent at
- 5:18Speaker 1: the meeting, the bronze altar with its bronze grating and
- 5:21Speaker 1: all its utensils, the bases for the surrounding courtyard, and
- 5:24Speaker 1: those for its entrance and all the tent pegs for
- 5:27Speaker 1: the tabernacle, and those for the surrounding courtyard. So the
- 5:31Speaker 1: total weight that we're talking about in bronze is like
- 5:33Speaker 1: two and a half tons. The total weight in gold
- 5:37Speaker 1: is about a ton or a metric ton. And so
- 5:40Speaker 1: we've got a lot of gold, a lot of silver
- 5:42Speaker 1: and things. And when we talk about bases... So we're
- 5:44Speaker 1: going to take a big hunk of metal in some
- 5:48Speaker 1: particular shape, probably round with a hole in the middle.
- 5:51Speaker 1: We're going to put a pole sticking up. Then we're
- 5:54Speaker 1: going to hang these curtains that are the walls of
- 5:57Speaker 1: the courtyard or of the tabernacle on these poles as
- 6:01Speaker 1: we go around here. And they're heavy because we're going
- 6:06Speaker 1: to be setting this up in the desert. It might
- 6:07Speaker 1: be in sand. It might be in scrub brush or whatever,
- 6:11Speaker 1: but they have to be able to hold the pulls
- 6:13Speaker 1: up so nothing falls down. We're going to continue on
- 6:17Speaker 1: to Exodus 39 here because I want to get back
- 6:20Speaker 1: to the narrative part here, away from the DIY home
- 6:24Speaker 1: improvement part of Exodus, and we're almost there. Exodus 39,
- 6:30Speaker 1: the priestly garments. From the blue, purple, and scarlet yarn,
- 6:32Speaker 1: they made woven garments for ministering in the sanctuary. They
- 6:35Speaker 1: also made sacred garments for Aaron as the Lord commanded Moses.
- 6:39Speaker 1: The ephod, they made the ephod of gold and of blue, purple,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and scarlet yarn, and a finely twisted linen. They hammered
- 6:45Speaker 1: out thin sheets of gold and cut strands to be
- 6:48Speaker 1: worked into the blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen,
- 6:52Speaker 1: the work of skilled hands. They made shoulder pieces for
- 6:55Speaker 1: the ephod, which were attached to two of its corners
- 6:58Speaker 1: so that it could be fastened. Its skillfully woven waistband
- 7:01Speaker 1: was like it of one piece with the ephod and
- 7:04Speaker 1: made with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn
- 7:08Speaker 1: and with finely twisted linen as the Lord commanded Moses.
- 7:12Speaker 1: They mounted the onyx stones in gold filigree settings and
- 7:16Speaker 1: engraved them with a seal with the names of the
- 7:18Speaker 1: sons of Israel. Then they fastened them on the shoulder
- 7:21Speaker 1: pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons
- 7:24Speaker 1: of Israel as the Lord commanded Moses. So I'm picturing
- 7:28Speaker 1: here with the ephod, we've got basically a breast piece
- 7:32Speaker 1: and a back piece that are coming over the shoulders
- 7:36Speaker 1: of the priest and And they're going to be actually
- 7:40Speaker 1: kind of heavy here with all the gold and the
- 7:42Speaker 1: stones and such. But the stones on it being one
- 7:46Speaker 1: for each of the sons of Israel, so one for
- 7:49Speaker 1: each of the tribes of Israel. The breast piece, they
- 7:52Speaker 1: fastened the breast piece, the work of a skilled craftsman.
- 7:56Speaker 1: They made it like the ephod of gold and a blue, purple,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and scarlet yarn and a finely twisted linen. It was square,
- 8:03Speaker 1: a span long and a span wide and folded double.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Then they mounted four rows of precious stones on it.
- 8:10Speaker 1: The first row was carnelian, chrysolite, and beryl. The second
- 8:13Speaker 1: row was turquoise, lapis lazuli, and emerald. The third row
- 8:18Speaker 1: was jacinth, agate, and amethyst. The fourth row was topaz, onyx,
- 8:23Speaker 1: and jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings. There
- 8:27Speaker 1: were twelve stones, one for each of the names of
- 8:29Speaker 1: the sons of Israel, which each engraved like a seal
- 8:32Speaker 1: with the name of one of the twelve tribes. For
- 8:35Speaker 1: the breastpiece They made braided chains of pure gold like
- 8:39Speaker 1: a rope. They made two gold filigree settings and two
- 8:42Speaker 1: gold rings and fastened the rings to two of the
- 8:45Speaker 1: corners of the breast piece. They fastened the two gold
- 8:49Speaker 1: chains to the rings at the corners of the breast
- 8:51Speaker 1: piece and the other ends to the chains of the
- 8:54Speaker 1: two settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the
- 8:57Speaker 1: ephod at the front. They made two gold rings and
- 9:00Speaker 1: attached them to the other two corners of the breast
- 9:02Speaker 1: piece on the inside edge next to the ephod. They
- 9:05Speaker 1: made two gold rings and attached them to the bottom
- 9:07Speaker 1: of the shoulder pieces on the front of the ephod
- 9:10Speaker 1: close to the seam just above the waistband of the ephod.
- 9:13Speaker 1: They tied the rings of the breast piece to the
- 9:16Speaker 1: rings of the ephod with blue cord connecting it to
- 9:19Speaker 1: the waistband so that the breast piece would not swing
- 9:22Speaker 1: out from the ephod as the Lord commanded Moses. Other
- 9:26Speaker 1: priestly garments. They made the robe of the ephod entirely
- 9:29Speaker 1: of blue cloth, the work of a weaver, with an
- 9:32Speaker 1: opening in the center of the robe like the opening
- 9:35Speaker 1: of a collar and a band around this opening so
- 9:37Speaker 1: that it would not tear. They made pomegranates of blue, purple,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen around the hem
- 9:44Speaker 1: of the robe, and they made bells of pure gold
- 9:47Speaker 1: and attached them around the hem between the pomegranates. The
- 9:50Speaker 1: bells of the pomegranates alternated around the hem of the
- 9:53Speaker 1: robe to be worn for ministering as the Lord commanded Moses.
- 9:57Speaker 1: For Aaron and his sons, they made tunics of fine
- 9:59Speaker 1: linen the work of a weaver, and the turban of
- 10:02Speaker 1: fine linen, the linen caps and the undergarments of finely
- 10:06Speaker 1: twisted linen. The sash was made of finely twisted linen
- 10:09Speaker 1: and blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, the work of an
- 10:12Speaker 1: embroiderer as the Lord commanded Moses. They made the plate,
- 10:16Speaker 1: the sacred emblem out of pure gold and engraved on
- 10:19Speaker 1: it like an inscription on a seal, holy to the Lord.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Then they fastened a blue cord to attach it to
- 10:25Speaker 1: the turban as the Lord commanded Moses. So I like
- 10:29Speaker 1: that the seal here, holy to the Lord. So set
- 10:31Speaker 1: apart for God's use is what holy means. And so
- 10:34Speaker 1: this is something that is attached to the turban. So
- 10:37Speaker 1: the priest is going to have this on his head
- 10:40Speaker 1: to remember his role, that he has been set apart
- 10:44Speaker 1: for God, for God's use. In this case, the role
- 10:48Speaker 1: of a priest. Moses inspects the tabernacle. Okay, we're getting done.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So all the work of the tabernacle, the tent of
- 10:54Speaker 1: meeting was completed. The Israelites did everything just as the
- 10:57Speaker 1: Lord commanded Moses. Then they brought the tabernacle to Moses,
- 11:00Speaker 1: the tent and all its furnishings, its clasps, frames, crossbars, posts,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and bases. The covering of ram skins dyed red and
- 11:09Speaker 1: the covering of another durable leather and the shielding curtain,
- 11:12Speaker 1: the arc of the covenant law with its poles and
- 11:15Speaker 1: atonement cover the table with all its articles and the
- 11:18Speaker 1: bread of the presence, the pure gold lampstand with its
- 11:22Speaker 1: row of lamps and all its accessories, and the olive
- 11:26Speaker 1: oil for the light, the gold altar, the anointing oil,
- 11:29Speaker 1: the fragrant incense, and the curtain for the entrance to
- 11:33Speaker 1: the tent, the bronze altar with its bronze grating, its
- 11:36Speaker 1: poles and all its utensils, the basin with its stand,
- 11:39Speaker 1: the curtains of the courtyard with its posts and bases,
- 11:44Speaker 1: and the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard, the
- 11:46Speaker 1: ropes and tent pegs for the courtyard, all the furnishings
- 11:49Speaker 1: for the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and the woven
- 11:52Speaker 1: garments worn for ministering in the sanctuary, both the sacred
- 11:55Speaker 1: garments for Aaron the priest and garments for his sons
- 11:58Speaker 1: when serving as priests. The Israelites had done all the
- 12:02Speaker 1: work just as the Lord had commanded Moses. Moses inspected
- 12:05Speaker 1: the work and saw that they had done it just
- 12:07Speaker 1: as the Lord had commanded. So Moses blessed them. That
- 12:11Speaker 1: phrase keeps coming up. just as the Lord commanded Moses,
- 12:14Speaker 1: just as the Lord commanded. They're doing all this work
- 12:17Speaker 1: and they're doing it well. It passes inspection, but they're
- 12:21Speaker 1: doing it because God told them to. Now, did you
- 12:23Speaker 1: expect when we started this study of Exodus that we
- 12:28Speaker 1: would spend so much time out in the middle of nowhere,
- 12:32Speaker 1: out in the desert, making stuff? I don't know that
- 12:35Speaker 1: the people of Israel did. They were told they were
- 12:37Speaker 1: just going to go out of the desert and then
- 12:39Speaker 1: go to the promised land. And this turned into the
- 12:44Speaker 1: Home Improvement Channel as they're making all these things or
- 12:47Speaker 1: the DIY channel or something like that. But they're creating
- 12:52Speaker 1: their worship space and they're setting up a form of
- 12:57Speaker 1: worship that will continue until the destruction of the temple.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And so it will continue for more than a thousand years.
- 13:05Speaker 1: And with that, we're going to end this episode of
- 13:08Speaker 1: the Bible Study Podcast. If you have any questions, send
