- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Jack.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Hey, I'm Dylan and we're from Dead Poets Society.
- 0:05Speaker 3: Fantastic guys, thanks for joining us today. Thank you for
- 0:09Speaker 3: having us my pleasure.
- 0:10Speaker 4: So Dead Poets Society have been announced as part of
- 0:13Speaker 4: the Good Things Festival, which will be held over three
- 0:15Speaker 4: consecutive days in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane from December five
- 0:18Speaker 4: to seven.
- 0:19Speaker 3: So how you feeling about the shows?
- 0:23Speaker 4: Good?
- 0:23Speaker 1: Excited?
- 0:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just going to be your first time in Australia,
- 0:28Speaker 4: first time.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I'm over wow.
- 0:30Speaker 4: So what do what do you do in a situation
- 0:32Speaker 4: like that, Like you do your homework? Do you ask
- 0:34Speaker 4: people who've been here before what to expect or did
- 0:36Speaker 4: you just coming told and see.
- 0:38Speaker 3: How it goes.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Dylan had a very good question in the last interview.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Is finding out the status of your country's value of
- 0:49Speaker 2: air conditioning and if you go to value.
- 0:54Speaker 1: The answer seems to be yes, is it? Yes?
- 0:59Speaker 4: We do up and all the non from Cans which
- 1:01Speaker 4: is up the top of Queensland and we love air
- 1:03Speaker 4: conditioning up there, like it's thirty five degrees down in
- 1:05Speaker 4: Brisbane not so much.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Melbourne not so much, didn't he not at all?
- 1:12Speaker 4: Okay, it's a diverse and eclectic lineup for good things.
- 1:20Speaker 4: You got fans like Tool, Weezer, Garbage Machine head Lorna
- 1:24Speaker 4: Shaw refused day Seeker. So who are you guys most
- 1:27Speaker 4: looking forward to playing with and seeing?
- 1:31Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to seeing seeing Queens she puts on
- 1:33Speaker 2: awesome show and.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Say for bad Nerves and obviously Tool and Weezer.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Yeah, and it is a very diverse lineup guys like
- 1:45Speaker 4: personally who fans of the lineups have got a bit
- 1:48Speaker 4: of different stuff on it? Or do you think they
- 1:49Speaker 4: should have one common sort of musical theme running through them.
- 1:54Speaker 5: I think we like the festivals that are diverse. You know,
- 1:57Speaker 5: it's just it's more interesting. You don't get bored hearing
- 2:00Speaker 5: the same thing over and over again. And this definitely
- 2:02Speaker 5: seems to be that way. So it's exciting.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Yeah, true, true, true.
- 2:07Speaker 4: And this is your first time down here, as you say, so,
- 2:10Speaker 4: what are you expecting from Australian crowds?
- 2:13Speaker 3: We get pretty rowdy down here, I.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Mean that's what I'm hoping.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I mean, I've heard you guys are wild, so you know,
- 2:20Speaker 2: we like a wild audience.
- 2:24Speaker 4: And on the flip side of that, we don't really
- 2:26Speaker 4: know what to expect from you either, So they run
- 2:27Speaker 4: it through a typical Dead Posts Society live show.
- 2:34Speaker 2: It's pretty high energy and sweaty and I don't know,
- 2:37Speaker 2: we just we try to like redline ourselves the entire set.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah nice.
- 2:44Speaker 4: And one of the best things about festivals are this
- 2:47Speaker 4: is you get to see bands that you may not
- 2:49Speaker 4: otherwise have heard or seen before. So if someone's coming
- 2:52Speaker 4: along and they don't know anything about Dead Posts Society,
- 2:54Speaker 4: what three of your songs should they listen to in
- 2:57Speaker 4: order to get to know the band a bit better?
- 3:00Speaker 5: Wow? Uh no, it would you answered that question?
- 3:07Speaker 2: I think three songs that show the kind of like
- 3:10Speaker 2: the extent of what we do. Uh probably say, like
- 3:15Speaker 2: running in Circles, I Hope You Hate Me? And Low
- 3:21Speaker 2: Air probably is the like three different veins of our sound.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I Hope You Hate Me? That sounds like an awesome song.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Listen to it?
- 3:33Speaker 3: Was that written for an exco friend of se Yeah
- 3:37Speaker 3: you nailed it. No so good.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Park Society formed back in twenty thirteen while attending Berkeley
- 3:45Speaker 4: School of Music in Boston. Like, I don't know about
- 3:48Speaker 4: you guys live here in Australia. You don't often hear
- 3:49Speaker 4: about bands forming while they're at school. It's pretty different
- 3:52Speaker 4: sort of a nation.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it was.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It was a music school, so you know, like everybody
- 3:59Speaker 2: there's there to do the same thing, and and it
- 4:05Speaker 2: was just you know, like I had no intentions of
- 4:07Speaker 2: joining a band, but when I played with Jack and
- 4:12Speaker 2: Will and at the time our original bassist Nick before Dylan,
- 4:17Speaker 2: there was just something different about playing with people and
- 4:20Speaker 2: writing with people and writing rock music specifically, they gave
- 4:25Speaker 2: me like an energy that I hadn't felt before.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So I was excited to do that.
- 4:30Speaker 4: And tell us about your journey from those school days
- 4:33Speaker 4: to where you are now, Like there's a long wife
- 4:34Speaker 4: from Beckley College to Chilia.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yet no, it was. It has been a very.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Gradual rise for our band. It has been the most
- 4:49Speaker 2: tame upward trajectory you've ever seen.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Thank god, it's always gone up. It's been like you know,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I mean, dude from.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Like so Dylan before he was in the band, was
- 5:05Speaker 2: you know, like just a friend of ours, and he
- 5:07Speaker 2: always filled in for Jack or Nick whenever they couldn't
- 5:11Speaker 2: make a show.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And so like.
- 5:15Speaker 2: His first experience with our band was at this place
- 5:17Speaker 2: it called Pianos in New York and.
- 5:21Speaker 1: It was I mean it was it was a pretty
- 5:24Speaker 1: like bad show.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It was awful.
- 5:27Speaker 5: The show started with about seven people in the audience
- 5:30Speaker 5: and ended with zero people.
- 5:31Speaker 4: In the audience.
- 5:36Speaker 2: The seven people that were there too were there to
- 5:38Speaker 2: see their friend's band, who went on right before us,
- 5:41Speaker 2: and the guy played the softest folk music you've ever heard,
- 5:44Speaker 2: and then it was us and like Dylan, like fucking Dylan,
- 5:49Speaker 2: or Dylan had like two days to learn all these songs,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and so like there was one song where like he
- 5:55Speaker 2: came in the chorus too early, we had to stop
- 5:57Speaker 2: and start over. And then there was another song of
- 5:59Speaker 2: ours where for some reason I couldn't hear what the
- 6:02Speaker 2: key was. I just couldn't figure it out. So at
- 6:05Speaker 2: one point I started singing, and the fucker that was
- 6:08Speaker 2: singing on the folk band right before us, was standing
- 6:10Speaker 2: in the back of his frenzy looked at me like this,
- 6:13Speaker 2: and I wanted to kill myself and like and so
- 6:16Speaker 2: it like to go from that, and then like years
- 6:21Speaker 2: go by, and then we're finally like playing head like
- 6:24Speaker 2: playing festivals and like headline shows and then like opening
- 6:27Speaker 2: for Chabelle and like it's been a long it's been
- 6:31Speaker 2: a long, steady trajectory.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But it's nice to shows like that ever.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Again hopefully anyway, second album fishing a lot. Yeah, So
- 6:47Speaker 4: how was the reception for that?
- 6:51Speaker 1: It was good? Yeah, yeah, I kept us going in
- 6:55Speaker 1: this direction, so.
- 6:58Speaker 4: I said, I was a bit about that from a
- 6:59Speaker 4: musical one of you guys and what you're going forward to.
- 7:01Speaker 4: So people, maybe you can get a better idea of
- 7:03Speaker 4: the band.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I mean, obviously the best way to know is to
- 7:10Speaker 1: just look us up on Spotify.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But like description wise, you know, we take a lot
- 7:14Speaker 2: of influence I think originally from like you know, like
- 7:17Speaker 2: Muse and Queens of the Stone Age, but we try
- 7:19Speaker 2: to you know, we have like we're very melodically driven
- 7:25Speaker 2: and we play heavy stuff, but it's never quite metal
- 7:29Speaker 2: play rock.
- 7:30Speaker 1: But you know, we don't lean super hard into like
- 7:32Speaker 1: any specific direction. It's just.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I don't know, it's just all of our musical tastes
- 7:39Speaker 2: combined kind of create something that I don't know, like
- 7:44Speaker 2: dives in all these directions but never quite lands in
- 7:47Speaker 2: any of them.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Yeah's cool, and I read it quite the really really
- 7:51Speaker 3: interesting quote.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Someone asked you what you wanted audiences to psych out
- 7:55Speaker 4: of that album and you replied, we want them to
- 7:57Speaker 4: leave with the truth.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Well that's me and trade do like, what do you
- 8:01Speaker 3: what do you actually mean by that?
- 8:03Speaker 2: Well, I think we value in our lyric writing honesty
- 8:09Speaker 2: quite a bit. Like the more you just lean into
- 8:11Speaker 2: your own experience, the more you know, people tend to
- 8:19Speaker 2: listen because you know, like, like the human experience is
- 8:24Speaker 2: very generic when you're speaking broadly, like everybody goes through
- 8:29Speaker 2: a breakup. Everybody goes through you know, their first you know,
- 8:34Speaker 2: kiss or love or blah blah blah blah blah, and
- 8:38Speaker 2: and it can feel like when you look at it broadly,
- 8:42Speaker 2: it is a very generic thing. But at the same time,
- 8:48Speaker 2: it is unique to every single person and nobody's ever
- 8:54Speaker 2: going to go through the break that you went through.
- 8:56Speaker 2: And so when you write from a place that is
- 9:00Speaker 2: completely you, when you just write about your own personal experiences,
- 9:07Speaker 2: it tends to connect in a way because it does
- 9:10Speaker 2: go into that broad realm of the generic human experience,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and then when it reaches that person on the other end,
- 9:18Speaker 2: it narrows back down.
- 9:19Speaker 1: To their own unique perspective.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And so I think the closer you get to your
- 9:26Speaker 2: own truth, the more you connect with other people.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Well, very cool, very cool.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Now you're currently on tour in North America with Chevelle
- 9:34Speaker 4: and Osten Alexandria.
- 9:35Speaker 3: So how's that going?
- 9:37Speaker 4: Uh?
- 9:38Speaker 3: Good?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Good. We get catering like eighty percent of the shows,
- 9:42Speaker 1: so that's fucking.
- 9:45Speaker 3: It's all about the catering.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Do fucking first time we've ever experienced catering on tour.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It's fucking sweet.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Do you say the spread light do for you? Good?
- 9:57Speaker 3: Things might if it's anything, while the other.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Years you can be even with a belly like that,
- 10:04Speaker 4: and so you're gonna you're gonna be nice and battle
- 10:07Speaker 4: hardened by the time you get to Australia.
- 10:08Speaker 3: After that straw then yeah, probably yeah, wicked, wicked and wicked.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Now I've been before I let you go, guys. I've
- 10:17Speaker 3: got a segment called photo Bomb that I do.
- 10:18Speaker 4: So I've basically been trolling through social media before you've
- 10:21Speaker 4: had a chat, and I found a few photos I
- 10:23Speaker 4: want to know a little bit more about. So the
- 10:26Speaker 4: first one, this photo actually proves that life on the
- 10:29Speaker 4: road for a band isn't all flash, hotel rooms and partying.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, that's in Uh that was what was that Switzerland?
- 10:43Speaker 1: That was Switzerland? Yeah, that was a venue that was
- 10:46Speaker 1: in a prison, an all prison, It.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Doesn't look like much room to swing their guitar around.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Very cool, and this one here made his probably one
- 11:00Speaker 4: of the most beautiful photos I've ever seen, Like, how
- 11:03Speaker 4: does something like this look from stage?
- 11:07Speaker 2: Oh?
- 11:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that was.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that was about a month ago, a little
- 11:13Speaker 5: over a month ago.
- 11:15Speaker 4: That was awesome.
- 11:16Speaker 5: I mean, how else can you describe it? Just to
- 11:19Speaker 5: see people enjoying themselves that much of all.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Ages, that's what A dad just laying out of the
- 11:26Speaker 4: back and letting his boy ride him by that like,
- 11:28Speaker 4: that's yeah, I hope that.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Did you see the aftermath of that? Did the kid
- 11:37Speaker 3: just one dive or did they let him?
- 11:40Speaker 1: No?
- 11:40Speaker 2: I was I was actually fucking I was like don't
- 11:43Speaker 2: I was like, don't drop that fucking I mean, you
- 11:45Speaker 2: can see everybody else is like, don't drop that.
- 11:48Speaker 3: They got it down. No, sorry, guys, Well, thanks very
- 11:51Speaker 3: much for your time.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Dead Poets Society will be at good things this year
- 11:54Speaker 4: and sounds like a good party going, so we'll be
- 11:56Speaker 4: checking out for sure.
- 11:58Speaker 1: All right, man, thank you get it.
