Speaker 3: Also on Saturday, four new Champs for Crowded the world

2:40
Speaker 3: And of course today is today we launched a new
2:42
Speaker 3: network show with Amanda Baron and myself, she of thirteen
2:44
Speaker 3: News and Tonight Live. It's called Metro News Midday Layer
2:47
Speaker 3: on this and other Metro News stations across the state.
2:50
Speaker 3: We'll get into that a little bit. Plus, get a
2:51
Speaker 3: visit from TJ. Meadows as a swell He and Dave

2:58
Speaker 3: A big story from Fridays seem to be the vaccine bill,
3:01
Speaker 3: and TJ's actually out with a commentary about that, so
3:04
Speaker 3: I'll talk to him about that. Plus your calls and

Speaker 3: I don't normally like to do two sports segments back
3:17
Speaker 3: to back, but I'm going to today as we welcome
3:19
Speaker 3: into the Jered Construction Studios. Jim Workman from the state's
3:22
Speaker 3: premier sports publication, Wally and Whimpy's Sports Digests. Good morning, sir,
3:26
Speaker 3: Good morning.
3:28
Speaker 5: Honored to be here.
3:29
Speaker 3: You are the very first guest in this studio, the
3:34
Speaker 3: very very first.
3:36
Speaker 5: Very cool. I have some history in this room as
3:39
Speaker 5: I started part time here in nineteen eighty nine. I
3:43
Speaker 5: did the sports page of the air with John Dick
3:46
Speaker 5: and Cheets in this room. So yeah, it's very special
3:50
Speaker 5: to be here today. So thank you.
3:51
Speaker 3: And please don't do anything like, you know, carving your
3:54
Speaker 3: name into the desk or anything. Okay, please don't do that.
3:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, no more bubble gum, now, no more bubbles only
3:59
Speaker 5: kicking tail and the bubblegum I is stuck underneath this
4:02
Speaker 5: brand new desk.
4:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, well that's good. That's good. I'm sure
4:04
Speaker 3: the other guests will appreciate that. So when we do
4:07
Speaker 3: the Metro News mid day show, I'll make sure Amanda
4:08
Speaker 3: sits over there. Understand that congratulations are in order for you, sir.
4:13
Speaker 5: Well a little bit. I've been part of the West
4:15
Speaker 5: Virginia Sports Writers Association for a lot of years and
4:19
Speaker 5: if you were at the Boys State Tournament on Saturday,
4:22
Speaker 5: you saw that we honored mister Doug Huff, who is
4:26
Speaker 5: a National High School Hall of Fame member. He was
4:30
Speaker 5: actually inducted the same year Sam Huff was. There's very
4:34
Speaker 5: few that are from West Virginia. Also a guy from
4:38
Speaker 5: southern West Virginia, Jennings Boyd from North Fork. He's that
4:41
Speaker 5: type of person's in the Hall of Fame. So yeah,
4:44
Speaker 5: Doug Huff has announced he's retiring in May right after
4:48
Speaker 5: our Victory Awards dinner, and we honored him on the
4:52
Speaker 5: court and the association has voted for me to take
4:56
Speaker 5: over as the executive director of the West Virginia Sports
4:59
Speaker 5: Right Association, which is again another honor, and I appreciate
5:03
Speaker 5: their confidence, and I think we're excited about the future.
5:08
Speaker 3: And you got your big your annual banquet or something,
5:10
Speaker 3: come on a brand.
5:11
Speaker 5: We do Sunday, May the fourth, and we are inducting
5:14
Speaker 5: into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame a guy
5:17
Speaker 5: you may know, Nick Saban, probably one of the greatest
5:21
Speaker 5: college football coaches of all time, and you know it's
5:25
Speaker 5: going to be an exciting time that we induct him
5:28
Speaker 5: into the Hall of Fame. It's a very limited tickets available,
5:33
Speaker 5: so if anybody in the Charleston area would want them.
5:36
Speaker 5: It's going to be held at the Bridgeport Conference Center,
5:39
Speaker 5: and I have some tickets. They're only thirty five dollars,
5:42
Speaker 5: so they're going to go really quick. And it's a
5:45
Speaker 5: smaller capacity, I guess, but we'll accommodate as many as
5:48
Speaker 5: we can. And if companies want to, you know, buy
5:50
Speaker 5: a table or sponsor the event, we can handle that too.
5:53
Speaker 3: All right, how do people get the tickets?
5:55
Speaker 5: Well, I'd say rather than give out my phone number,
5:59
Speaker 5: you could email me at Wallywimpy Sports at gmail dot com. Okay,
6:05
Speaker 5: and I will include your contact information. I'll get back
6:08
Speaker 5: to you all right.
6:11
Speaker 3: So the boys basketball tournament happened over the weekend. Four
6:15
Speaker 3: champs were I said earlier, I said four new champs
6:18
Speaker 3: for a crown. That's actually not true because tug Valley
6:20
Speaker 3: repeated as a single a champs overall. Your taking the tournament, uh,
6:25
Speaker 3: dizzy ing.
6:26
Speaker 5: I mean we spent one hundred and fifty hours over
6:30
Speaker 5: the past couple of weeks in the Civic Center, if
6:33
Speaker 5: if you were covering the games, and I was the
6:34
Speaker 5: on site media coordinator there, so you know, I had
6:38
Speaker 5: to look back this morning. I was like, you know,
6:40
Speaker 5: if he asked me about that, I don't know who
6:42
Speaker 5: won because you're busy. That's the thing about it when
6:44
Speaker 5: you're doing these kind of events. I got you it
6:46
Speaker 5: was a blur, but yeah, I mean the teams that
6:48
Speaker 5: won it were dominant. Yeah, and they brought great fan bases.
6:53
Speaker 5: It was a fun time.
6:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and again, congratulations to all the champions
6:58
Speaker 3: and their respective schools. I'm going to get that was
7:00
Speaker 3: Speedy Babin's coming up a little bit later on. I
7:02
Speaker 3: just happened, though, Jim, to be standing in an area
7:05
Speaker 3: where the teams left the floor on Friday, and I
7:09
Speaker 3: really felt bad for this one. Kid, you know from
7:11
Speaker 3: Spring Valley High. They've just been eliminated from the tournament. Obviously,
7:14
Speaker 3: he was very visibly upset. His girlfriend, I'm presuming, was
7:17
Speaker 3: there to give him a hug. And for that young man,
7:20
Speaker 3: don't know his name, but for him and so many
7:22
Speaker 3: other seniors, that's the last time many of those kids
7:24
Speaker 3: will ever put on a uniform, certainly for their school.
7:27
Speaker 3: If they're a senior. Most kids will not go on
7:29
Speaker 3: to play you know, high school or beyond high school
7:33
Speaker 3: in basketball, So that's kind of it for them.
7:36
Speaker 5: Yeah, it is. I mean thankful for sure that they
7:39
Speaker 5: made it to the tournament in Charleston. A lot of
7:43
Speaker 5: those similar stories happened, you know, in the regionals this
7:47
Speaker 5: year and they did not make it to the States.
7:49
Speaker 5: But you know, thirty two boys teams, thirty two girls
7:53
Speaker 5: teams made it down here, eight in each of the
7:55
Speaker 5: four classifications, and I think it was an outstanding achievement.
8:00
Speaker 5: You do. I mean, there's only going to be one
8:02
Speaker 5: champion in each class and there, you know, but quite
8:05
Speaker 5: an accomplishment to get there.
8:07
Speaker 3: I wanted to have you on last week, but you're
8:09
Speaker 3: a little bit busy, you know, with the with the
8:11
Speaker 3: with the boys State tournament, and I'll talk about this
8:13
Speaker 3: WU basketball situation. What a couple of days it was
8:16
Speaker 3: in Mountaineer Nation. First the tournament snub, then the governor
8:20
Speaker 3: and the Attorney General calling out the NCUBA and all
8:22
Speaker 3: the national attention that that gout, and then coach Coach
8:25
Speaker 3: Deavreeze leaves for Indiana. Interesting couple of days in Morgantown, Jim,
8:30
Speaker 3: for sure.
8:30
Speaker 5: Even with what was it twenty four games going on
8:36
Speaker 5: last week, a topic of conversation was the WU coaching
8:42
Speaker 5: and there was a lot of people that wanted to
8:44
Speaker 5: talk about it in between games, in between sessions. So
8:48
Speaker 5: it's really going to be interesting to see how it
8:50
Speaker 5: all plays out. I know some of the names initially
8:53
Speaker 5: that were bandied about they've taken other jobs. I mean,
8:58
Speaker 5: Ryan Odom was at Virginia Commonwealth, He's now at the
9:01
Speaker 5: University of Virginia. McCollum was at Drake. They thought they
9:05
Speaker 5: might be able to pull another Drake guy, but he's
9:08
Speaker 5: accepted a position at Iowa. And Will Wade, you know,
9:12
Speaker 5: McNee State was in the tournament, but he's taken the
9:15
Speaker 5: nc State job. So that leaves a few others, probably
9:20
Speaker 5: Jared Calhoun is probably everybody's favorite. It seems late because
9:24
Speaker 5: he has some history with West Virginia and Bob Huggins,
9:28
Speaker 5: and he's had some success at Utah State. So we'll see. Now.
9:33
Speaker 5: One thing is the Utah State ad just said that
9:37
Speaker 5: they've given Calhoun a contract addendum that's been approved already
9:44
Speaker 5: by the administration and they want to keep him. So
9:47
Speaker 5: we'll see. In the news behind that was if he
9:51
Speaker 5: accepts that to stay at Utah State, he will be
9:54
Speaker 5: the second highest paid coach in the Mountain West Conference.
9:57
Speaker 5: So I'm sure it's attractive. But as you know, he
10:01
Speaker 5: has some ties and I've got a factual. This is
10:04
Speaker 5: not rumor, factual, factual. He's only been out there for
10:07
Speaker 5: one year, but one year ago he had he had
10:13
Speaker 5: a home in Logan. He in my hometown, Logan, Utah.
10:18
Speaker 5: Oh that you mean Okay, sorry, that's factual. Yeah, Utah
10:23
Speaker 5: State is in Logan, Utah.
10:25
Speaker 3: Okay, well that's true. Yeah, she's gonna say he was
10:28
Speaker 3: down in la as we call him.
10:29
Speaker 6: No.
10:29
Speaker 5: Look, we'll get that rumor started.
10:31
Speaker 3: Though, based on a fact I got you Dave Allen
10:33
Speaker 3: showing five dyline presented apart by your hometown baseball team,
10:36
Speaker 3: the Charleston dirty Birds. Great season. Dirty Birds Baseball coming
10:39
Speaker 3: up over at gomart Ballpark Tuesdays two dollars. Tuesdays two
10:42
Speaker 3: dollar tickets, popcorn, hot dogs, SODA's and more. Wednesdays bring
10:45
Speaker 3: your dogs to the park for woof Wednesday Thursdays with
10:47
Speaker 3: Thursday Thursdays with one dollar beers and water. Fridays freebie
10:50
Speaker 3: Fridays with all kinds of giveaways, fire works after the game.
10:53
Speaker 3: On Saturdays and Sundays of course, Family Fun Days. Kids
10:56
Speaker 3: twelve and under get in for free. For more, visit
10:58
Speaker 3: dirty Birds Baseball dot com. All right, the questions on
11:00
Speaker 3: everybody's mind is is there a chance, is there an
11:04
Speaker 3: outside chance, even an inside chance, that Bob Huggins makes
11:07
Speaker 3: it to Morgantown to coach the basketball team.
11:09
Speaker 5: You know, it's all about timing and all these coaching searches.
11:13
Speaker 5: I don't think he's at the top of the list.
11:15
Speaker 5: I think, obviously, if he is wanting to coach basketball again,
11:20
Speaker 5: it would probably be in Morgantown. There were rumors that
11:24
Speaker 5: he may accept the job this year. He did not
11:26
Speaker 5: do that. I don't know if he was offered or not,
11:28
Speaker 5: but you know, we did Rich Rot we brought him back.
11:32
Speaker 5: I mean, could the same thing happen? Did Hugs burn
11:36
Speaker 5: some bridges with some things.
11:39
Speaker 3: He didn't handle? And you and I talked about this.
11:41
Speaker 3: He did not handle it well well, I mean you know,
11:44
Speaker 3: I mean, let's face it here, he didn't handle but
11:47
Speaker 3: Mountaineer Nation was willing to forgive rich right. At least
11:49
Speaker 3: some of them were. Now some aren't. Some are still
11:51
Speaker 3: upset about it. But I mean, wouldn't that be something, though, Jim,
11:53
Speaker 3: to have Huggins and rich Rod back on the sidelines again.
11:59
Speaker 5: Right, we'll see. I mean, really, the only person that
12:02
Speaker 5: can answer that is Ren Baker. And another interesting part
12:07
Speaker 5: of that is wvu's president is outgoing Gordon Gee. So
12:15
Speaker 5: I don't know how much juice his thoughts on the
12:18
Speaker 5: situation gives now, but Ren Baker is good. I think
12:22
Speaker 5: he's going to make a decision this week.
12:24
Speaker 3: You think something this week.
12:25
Speaker 5: I do if the coach that he wants is available,
12:28
Speaker 5: and that that would mean that that guy that he
12:31
Speaker 5: wants is not involved in the tournament. Now, you know,
12:34
Speaker 5: we're down to sixteen, so if he's not one of
12:37
Speaker 5: those top sixteen team coaches, he would be available to
12:41
Speaker 5: talk to and hire, So I think Chester Fraser. You
12:46
Speaker 5: know a lot of people kind of think, well, he
12:48
Speaker 5: doesn't really have a whole lot of history. WU he's
12:51
Speaker 5: only been an assistant for one year. But he's not
12:54
Speaker 5: as bad a candidate as you might think he's had.
12:56
Speaker 5: He's been at some Illinois, he been at k State,
12:59
Speaker 5: Virginia Tech, he's been one year at WVU. I think
13:03
Speaker 5: he's worth an interview. And then there's another guy who's
13:06
Speaker 5: been at Colorado State. They just lost a close when
13:09
Speaker 5: a buzzer beater yesterday to Maryland. And uh he actually
13:13
Speaker 5: his wife has connections to West Virginia, so you know,
13:17
Speaker 5: everybody's got to connect.
13:18
Speaker 3: There's always a West Virginia connection. Hey, before we let
13:21
Speaker 3: you go, hope spring's eternal. When you're a Reds fan,
13:24
Speaker 3: head's opening days on Thursday? Yes, what do you what
13:26
Speaker 3: do you think?
13:27
Speaker 5: Well, disappointing news late was the reliever has been hurt,
13:32
Speaker 5: so he's not going to start the season healthy. So
13:36
Speaker 5: you know, we'll see.
13:37
Speaker 7: I do.
13:37
Speaker 5: I'm very excited about it. I think a lot of
13:39
Speaker 5: those younger players that have done well the past couple
13:42
Speaker 5: of years are going to step their game up. I
13:45
Speaker 5: think day La Cruz is gonna have a better season.
13:47
Speaker 5: He's surrounded with better talent, and of course it starts
13:51
Speaker 5: with the manager, Terry mcfrancona. I mean, he's gonna If
13:54
Speaker 5: anybody can do it, Tito can.
13:56
Speaker 3: So we'll see get another Wally and Whimpy's night. There's
14:00
Speaker 3: day night over Buffalo Wild Wings.
14:01
Speaker 8: Yep.
14:01
Speaker 5: Typically we do it on the third Thursday, but we
14:04
Speaker 5: scootered it back to the fourth this week. This Thursday,
14:08
Speaker 5: Buffalo Wild Wings and Cross Lane six o'clock to seven thirty.
14:12
Speaker 5: And we've always given away w and Marshall baseball or
14:16
Speaker 5: basketball and football tickets, but we have some baseball tickets
14:19
Speaker 5: now we're going to give away and some Dirty Birds tickets.
14:21
Speaker 5: So it's going to be a fun night Thursday Night,
14:23
Speaker 5: Buffalo Wild Wings, Crossland.
14:25
Speaker 3: And remind people where they can view your work in Wallywhippies.
14:29

18:10
Speaker 3: good morning, Welcome to the show.
18:12
Speaker 8: I feel so underdressed here at the new studios.
18:15

18:29
Speaker 8: You know I should have gone to Tony the Taylor

18:34
Speaker 8: So next time I'm on, I'll have to do that.
18:36
Speaker 3: All right, all right, So let's talk about the game.
18:40
Speaker 3: Some good games as always, some not so good games.
18:43
Speaker 3: That happens. That's the nature of the state tournament speed
18:47
Speaker 3: it is.
18:48
Speaker 12: Indeed.
18:49
Speaker 8: First off, I think the region was very well represented.
18:53
Speaker 8: Two of the better games involved the George Washington Patriots.
18:57
Speaker 8: There's any final with Morgantown, which came down to a
19:00
Speaker 8: last second shot that Morgantown missed, and pretty much the
19:03
Speaker 8: same on championship Saturday, a last second shot that Rick
19:07
Speaker 8: Green had set up and just had trouble getting that
19:12
Speaker 8: play set to run and they turned the ball over.
19:16
Speaker 8: But it was a terrific, terrific weekend for George Washington
19:21
Speaker 8: High School and they've got a great deal of that
19:23
Speaker 8: nucleus coming back. Also, Nitro, look at the Wildcats first
19:26
Speaker 8: time ever and the boys state championship game. So Austin Lowe,
19:30
Speaker 8: hats off to him and his team, and he's got
19:33
Speaker 8: some people coming back as well. So it may not
19:36
Speaker 8: be the last time you and I are talking about
19:38
Speaker 8: George Washington and Nitro at the boys state high school
19:42
Speaker 8: basketball tournament.
19:43
Speaker 3: And I'll tell you there is nothing like the state tournament.
19:45
Speaker 3: I mean, Fred and I talked about it last week.
19:48
Speaker 3: I was over there Friday and get to hang out
19:50
Speaker 3: with you and some other folks over there. It's just
19:53
Speaker 3: something about it is electric. And you know, you see
19:57
Speaker 3: these schools that sometimes come from far away play Charleston,
20:01
Speaker 3: and sometimes they're the bigger schools, sometimes they are the
20:03
Speaker 3: smaller schools.
20:04
Speaker 8: Uh.
20:04
Speaker 3: For the Tug Valley game. And you and I both
20:06
Speaker 3: know a little something about basketball in southern West Virginia.
20:09
Speaker 3: I don't think there was a person left in beautiful
20:11
Speaker 3: downtown Naugatuck.
20:13
Speaker 8: Uh yeah, running the gas station a beautiful downtown Vaugatuck
20:17
Speaker 8: right now? Are on last week ago as you went broke? Yeah,
20:21
Speaker 8: I mean there was nobody, nobody, nobody but you and
20:24
Speaker 8: I growing up in the southern coal fields. Uh, just
20:29
Speaker 8: know what that is like. And on Thursday evening the
20:33
Speaker 8: Wyoming East in my final game, it was just a
20:38
Speaker 8: great crowd all the way around the crowds were into it.
20:42
Speaker 8: And I looked at Fred and I said, this just
20:45
Speaker 8: want to stay tournament is all about right here, just
20:51
Speaker 8: just having that feel with Williamstown and Wyoming East going
20:55
Speaker 8: back and forth with each other, it was terrific and
20:59
Speaker 8: West Side brought a good crowd. And when you see
21:02
Speaker 8: those Southern coalfield teams, it just you know, it just
21:05
Speaker 8: gives you a good feeling that what high school sports
21:09
Speaker 8: means in the state, particularly to the small towns.

21:34
Speaker 3: surprises from the tournament in your opinions, be.
21:37
Speaker 8: Ah Well Tig Valley was expected to repeat Wielding Central
21:42
Speaker 8: and Williams Down. They were expected to be in the
21:45
Speaker 8: championship game on Saturday, and even though that ended up
21:48
Speaker 8: being a double digit final for Wielding Central, that game
21:52
Speaker 8: was tied going into the fourth quarter, so no surprise there.
21:57
Speaker 8: Triple A Bridgeport Ridge Sport's very good, no question about it.
22:02
Speaker 8: Nitro Lofts to a very good team Spring Mills. I
22:05
Speaker 8: think everyone expected them to be in the finals. They
22:08
Speaker 8: went to the finals last year, got upset by Morgantown.
22:11
Speaker 8: So that's a long answer to a very short answer
22:14
Speaker 8: of no, no surprise.
22:17
Speaker 3: Stand out plays or players for you.
22:23
Speaker 8: I like the big kid from George Washington, Noah Lewis.
22:28
Speaker 13: I think.
22:30
Speaker 8: Like him a lot. Everybody you know Tug Valley, they
22:32
Speaker 8: just you know, I'm not sure Tug Valley has a guard,
22:36
Speaker 8: a center and a form. They all just go out there.
22:38
Speaker 8: Everybody plays, you know, like one trip down the floor,
22:41
Speaker 8: one guy's the center of the next trip down the floor,
22:43
Speaker 8: he's the point guard. Better watch out for Wyoming East
22:49
Speaker 8: next year. They've got the six to seven kid back,
22:54
Speaker 8: They've got the point guard with scary and his dad
22:57
Speaker 8: was a very good player for the Warriors. And of
22:59
Speaker 8: course up in Wilming Central you've got already the state
23:02
Speaker 8: player of the year in Eli Sancomb, who is a
23:05
Speaker 8: junior and he is as good as advertised. So if
23:08
Speaker 8: Willing Central does make it to the Civic Center next year,
23:11
Speaker 8: he is worth the price of.
23:13
Speaker 3: Admission, and I will want to mention, I'll throw this
23:16
Speaker 3: out there that if you go to our website wv
23:19
Speaker 3: metronews dot com, there's a link on there that will
23:20
Speaker 3: take you to Metro News Television, or you can just
23:23
Speaker 3: download the Metro News Television app and the games are
23:25
Speaker 3: archived if you want to go back and watch them.
23:27
Speaker 3: You maybe want to see the TV coverage. You were
23:29
Speaker 3: there in person at the Connell SEEMA Convention Center, but
23:31
Speaker 3: you want to see the TV coverage, you can get
23:33
Speaker 3: him there before we let you go. Because I like
23:36
Speaker 3: to talk a little history, may anytime I have you
23:38
Speaker 3: or Fred Pursinger on the show, give me the best
23:42
Speaker 3: Tate Tournament game you ever called? Oh that I ever
23:48
Speaker 3: that you ever called?
23:51
Speaker 8: Logan in Winfield semi Finals two thousand and five, when
23:55
Speaker 8: it's doubled overtime. Winfield was the defending Class Doubled A champs.
23:59
Speaker 8: It looked like they were going to go to the
24:01
Speaker 8: finals for a second straight year. Logan was down by
24:04
Speaker 8: three with about three seconds left and Brian Lane of
24:07
Speaker 8: Logan had a three at the buzzer to send it
24:09
Speaker 8: into overtime. Now, the best game I ever saw was Logan,
24:15
Speaker 8: Of course, Logan in Clarksburg Washington Irving nineteen seventy six,
24:19
Speaker 8: Vick Herbert Jeff Schneider. No three point shot back in
24:24
Speaker 8: the day, but the final score one eleven to eighty
24:26
Speaker 8: seven with Vic and Jeff. Could you imagine what the
24:30
Speaker 8: final would have been with a three point shots.
24:32
Speaker 3: They would have gone over two hundred probably back I'll
24:34
Speaker 3: tell you a quick story where I'll let you go
24:36
Speaker 3: at that Logan and Winfield game in two thousand and five.
24:38
Speaker 3: I because when you know, you were off doing the tournament,
24:41
Speaker 3: somebody had to run the radio station, you know. So
24:44
Speaker 3: I was back in Logan, and this was before the
24:46
Speaker 3: games were streamed. You know, Internet was a thing, but
24:49
Speaker 3: not like we know it now. And I can remember
24:52
Speaker 3: at one point stepping out of the palatial studios of
24:56
Speaker 3: WVW Radio on we were on the second floor off
24:59
Speaker 3: unto the balcony and they're on Main Street. There was
25:02
Speaker 3: a there were two cars sitting there and they had
25:05
Speaker 3: the tournament network on the station there, Metro News. They
25:09
Speaker 3: had it cranked up and about forty people standing around
25:13
Speaker 3: the cars listening to the game. That's pretty intense right there.
25:18
Speaker 8: It's called Fred I were doing the game?
25:20
Speaker 3: Is that what it was?
25:21
Speaker 8: That's what it was.
25:22
Speaker 3: All right, all right, Speedy, We'll let you get back

26:46
Speaker 3: I think we were trying to get the governor on today.
26:48
Speaker 3: I'm not sure if that's a done deal. If not,
26:50
Speaker 3: he will be on sometime over the next couple of days.
26:53
Speaker 3: We've got promises from folks with last names like Mansion
26:57
Speaker 3: and Justice, and a little bit later on in the
26:59
Speaker 3: week Marshall President Brad Smith will be on the show
27:02
Speaker 3: today at the two o'clock hour. We're doing a thing
27:05
Speaker 3: and we'll do this every Monday that I call Mayor Monday,
27:08
Speaker 3: similar to what I used to do on the local show,
27:10
Speaker 3: but it will be not just Canau Valley. It'll be
27:13
Speaker 3: a mayor from somewhere throughout the great state of West Virginia.
27:17
Speaker 3: And Today's mayor will be Tom Joyce, the mayor of Parkersburg.
27:21
Speaker 3: He'll be joining us on the show coming up as
27:23
Speaker 3: part of Mayor Monday and from two thirty on after
27:26
Speaker 3: we do the news at the bottom of the hour.
27:28
Speaker 3: This is my gift, my present, my promise to you.
27:31
Speaker 3: Every day two thirty, well, let me say, if there's
27:35
Speaker 3: breaking news, then we may have to throw that little
27:38
Speaker 3: bone in there, doubtle caveat in there. But from two
27:41
Speaker 3: thirty until three I will be doing that part myself.
27:44
Speaker 3: Amanda won't be part of that. It is going to
27:46
Speaker 3: be nothing but you. It's going to be your calls,
27:49
Speaker 3: your text. Think of it like Steam Release, except I
27:53
Speaker 3: may interject some in there too, but I want to
27:55
Speaker 3: turn it over to you. And that's what we're going
27:58
Speaker 3: to be doing. So it's Metro News mid Day uh
28:01
Speaker 3: and it will make its debut today And a big
28:04

28:06

28:36

Speaker 16: How are you?
32:00
Speaker 3: I'm doing fine. I mean once we learn how to
32:01
Speaker 3: work all this stuff in here, and the paint may
32:03
Speaker 3: not be completely dry, so you know, you'll just have
32:05
Speaker 3: to kind of look over that. Welcome to the show.
32:07
Speaker 16: Thank you.
32:08
Speaker 3: Tell us what's going on? Michell.
32:09
Speaker 5: Let's start with you.
32:10
Speaker 3: Tell us what's going on Wednesday?
32:11
Speaker 16: Well, we are first. I want to first thank Jersey Mike's.
32:14
Speaker 16: We are so incredibly excited and we want to thank
32:18
Speaker 16: you for choosing the Children's Home Society of West Virginia
32:22
Speaker 16: for your fifteenth annual Month of Giving and then the
32:25
Speaker 16: day of Giving on the twenty sixth, which is this Wednesday.
32:28
Speaker 16: So we are so incredibly grateful for you choosing us,
32:31
Speaker 16: and this day of giving will take place at your
32:35
Speaker 16: Tay's Valley, Charleston, Barbersville and Vienna locations.
32:39
Speaker 3: Correct, So talk about Jersey Mike's involvement here and we'll
32:44
Speaker 3: get to exactly how the thing is going to work.
32:45
Speaker 3: But talk about Jersey Mike's involvement.
32:47
Speaker 17: So every March we do our Month of Giving where
32:50
Speaker 17: we partner with a local charity to offer support. Of
32:54
Speaker 17: course be president, our president active in our community. This
32:59
Speaker 17: year we did choose the Children's Home Society. And what
33:04
Speaker 17: we do in the month of March March, we collect
33:07
Speaker 17: donations all month.
33:09
Speaker 5: Then it finally ends on well.
33:12
Speaker 17: Not it will be the whole month, but our day
33:14
Speaker 17: given being this Wednesday, we will donate one hundred percent
33:16
Speaker 17: of ourselves to our partner, which is your charity, and
33:23
Speaker 17: we are very happy and very excited to be a
33:25
Speaker 17: part of it.
33:25
Speaker 16: We are thankful and incredibly grateful.
33:27
Speaker 3: Talk about the work of the Children's Home Society Well.
33:30
Speaker 16: Children's Home Society was founded in eighteen ninety six, so
33:34
Speaker 16: we're actually coming up on our one hundred and twenty
33:37
Speaker 16: ninth year anniversary. If you can believe that serving children
33:40
Speaker 16: and families in the state of West Virginia, and that's
33:43
Speaker 16: what we do, and that's what we love to do.
33:45
Speaker 16: From the very beginning, our mission has always been to
33:48
Speaker 16: promote the well being of children, and our current efforts
33:51
Speaker 16: are directed towards helping children find lifetime families, protecting and
33:55
Speaker 16: nurturing children, and helping preserve and strengthen their families. We
34:00
Speaker 16: have thirteen primary locations all together, twenty seven service locations
34:04
Speaker 16: throughout the state of West Virginia, and we have so
34:07
Speaker 16: many programs that are geared towards helping children and families.
34:12
Speaker 16: If you don't mind, I'd like to go through them
34:13
Speaker 16: all because they're incredible and our staff do such an
34:17
Speaker 16: amazing job working with children and families. We have services
34:22
Speaker 16: foster care and adoption, emergency shelter care, healthy grand families.
34:28
Speaker 16: We have four family support centers, we have resource centers.
34:32
Speaker 16: We offer safe at Home. We offer CSD programming, which
34:37
Speaker 16: is children with children with serious emotional disorders, independent living
34:43
Speaker 16: transitional living birth to three, and right from the start
34:46
Speaker 16: we can programs parents as teachers, a summer youth program,
34:50
Speaker 16: child advocacy center, therapy services, and after school programs. So
34:55
Speaker 16: it's incredible what our staff do every day. The lives
34:58
Speaker 16: they touch is absolutely amazing. Last year we assisted eighteen thousand,
35:03
Speaker 16: six hundred and sixty one children in families statewide.
35:06
Speaker 3: It's amazing. That's amazing. And you know when you every
35:10
Speaker 3: time that you turn on our radio stations or you
35:13
Speaker 3: pick up the paper, whatever your source of news is,
35:15
Speaker 3: you hear in the news constantly about especially in West Virginia,
35:19
Speaker 3: about the crisis that we have with our kids in
35:21
Speaker 3: various whether it's foster care, whether it's whatever. And so
35:25
Speaker 3: I mean the work, as you said, you've been doing that,
35:27
Speaker 3: not you personally, but it's been around for a long,
35:30
Speaker 3: long long time. But now I mean to use the
35:35
Speaker 3: advertising cliche, now more than ever. Your services are needed.
35:39
Speaker 16: Most definitely, and we welcome that. We love serving children
35:44
Speaker 16: and families in West Virginia.
35:45
Speaker 3: So when people go into their Jersey Mike's locations and
35:49
Speaker 3: the locations are again.
35:50
Speaker 17: The locations be our Hurricane Hurricane Taste Valley location Charleston, Barbersville,
35:55
Speaker 17: and Vienna, West Virginia.
35:56
Speaker 3: Okay, well, I'll be partnered.
35:57
Speaker 17: With the Home Sidey of Westgia. So when everybody comes
36:01
Speaker 17: out and we encourage everybody to make it stop by
36:04
Speaker 17: our stores. Granted, it will be a very busiest, busy day.
36:09
Speaker 17: It's the business day of the year for all my restaurants.
36:12
Speaker 17: But be patient. A lot of people we push to
36:18
Speaker 17: online ordering order ahead. We'll plan to be there like
36:22
Speaker 17: we'll have your food ready, you'll walk in, you'll just
36:25
Speaker 17: pick up your food and go. It's kind of the
36:28
Speaker 17: best way to execute our day givings because we'll have
36:31
Speaker 17: lines to the door at all four or five of
36:33
Speaker 17: my locations.
36:34
Speaker 3: All right, well, we it's a very worthwhile cause that
36:38
Speaker 3: you've chosen here. She said, you do a different one
36:40
Speaker 3: ever year. In Children's Home Society. I know a little bit.
36:42
Speaker 3: Actually I know a lot about it. You mentioned that
36:44
Speaker 3: we can program. I have been in the past, been
36:47
Speaker 3: very very involved with that.
36:48
Speaker 8: We can.
36:49
Speaker 3: We can actually stands for working to eliminate child abuse
36:51
Speaker 3: and neglect. And there is a big chapter in my
36:54
Speaker 3: hometown and I worked with with with those folks over
36:57
Speaker 3: the years, along with a guy named Landell Murphy who
37:01
Speaker 3: Landau really got his start by performing at the annual
37:06
Speaker 3: vaudeville show for We Can And I was always a
37:09
Speaker 3: big part of that, helped him see the show. Uh,
37:12
Speaker 3: and that's how I got to know Landau was And
37:14
Speaker 3: to this day, Landau still is very big on the
37:18
Speaker 3: Children's Home Society. That's kind of like his charity of choice.
37:21
Speaker 3: So obviously you guys are doing great work. Give us
37:24
Speaker 3: the details again. So it's all day Wednesday.
37:28
Speaker 17: All day Wednesday, from time we open the doors to
37:31
Speaker 17: the time we close it. Come out, support a good,
37:35
Speaker 17: good cause, good charity. You know, of course, get you
37:38
Speaker 17: some great food. I have you all lunch coming right
37:40
Speaker 17: behind me.
37:41
Speaker 3: Oh really, yeah, Ryan, did you hear that we got
37:44
Speaker 3: lunch coming courtesy of the folks at Jersey Mike. Yeah,
37:46
Speaker 3: that made Ryan happy. So what's your favorite thing on
37:48
Speaker 3: the menu A Jersey Mike.
37:49
Speaker 17: I'm a I'm an Italian guy. Oh yeah, forever, always,

41:33
Speaker 3: Good morning, you're on the air.
41:35
Speaker 13: Joe Bourning days, Hey Jim, how you doing?
41:37

42:19
Speaker 13: Jim, I'm doing pretty good. I am at the facility
42:26
Speaker 13: in Channas City. I have a little bit of a
42:31

42:57
Speaker 3: Not at all, not at all, And I do appreciate
43:00
Speaker 3: your call. Jim, thanks a lot. All right, Gentzer, good buddy,
43:05
Speaker 3: Jim into ten minutes away from ten. As I mentioned,
43:08

43:18
Speaker 3: three hours, three hours show Hoppy Kerchieval. We'll be doing
43:22
Speaker 3: a segment on the show today. As I mentioned, TJ. Meadows,
43:26
Speaker 3: it's here now. What you doing man? How about these
43:28
Speaker 3: new digs? Brother?
43:29
Speaker 13: Yeah?
43:30
Speaker 5: You like these?
43:30
Speaker 20: I tell you, this is nice?
43:33
Speaker 3: This is nice.
43:34
Speaker 8: Yeah.
43:34
Speaker 3: If I could stop hitting the microphone, that seems to
43:36
Speaker 3: be the thing. So when we switch positions, I'm presuming
43:39
Speaker 3: you'll do the show from where I'm sitting now, just
43:41
Speaker 3: keep in mind that every time you move you're gonna
43:43
Speaker 3: hit this microphone and you're gonna hear a big plunk
43:45
Speaker 3: every time you do it. So to keep that in mind,
43:47
Speaker 3: let me get this in here to Day Island, showing

44:01
Speaker 3: So yeah, so, I mean, how long? How long have
44:04
Speaker 3: you been doing the show? When did you and Wilson
44:06
Speaker 3: start doing the show?
44:07
Speaker 20: January the It was the third of the sixth whatever.
44:10
Speaker 20: The Monday was, Yeah, the monday, Yeah, that was the
44:12
Speaker 20: day we had the big snow.
44:13
Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, it was the sixth.
44:14
Speaker 3: Was it the sixth? I think so, yeah, that was
44:16
Speaker 3: the first day. And I have been here. I've been
44:20
Speaker 3: employed by this here company for five years. In May,
44:24
Speaker 3: and when I came here and I interviewed for this job,
44:28
Speaker 3: I remember sitting in Dale Cooper's office. It was during COVID,
44:31
Speaker 3: so we were socially distanced, and I remember sitting in
44:33
Speaker 3: Dale Cooper's office and he said, we're getting ready to
44:35
Speaker 3: do a new studio. It's going to be state of
44:38
Speaker 3: the art five years later.
44:40
Speaker 5: Here we are.
44:41
Speaker 3: But I do want to say all in all seriousness,
44:43
Speaker 3: and I heard Chris say this this morning, big shout
44:45
Speaker 3: out to Ken Tennant and Pick and to the guys
44:51
Speaker 3: who worked very hard on this project from day one.
44:55
Speaker 3: Matter of fact, who's talking to Ken before we went
44:59
Speaker 3: on the air. And I think he got out of
45:00
Speaker 3: here about three am this morning. By that time, Chris
45:02
Speaker 3: and Jeffer already in the building. Yeah. So it's not
45:05
Speaker 3: easy to it's not easy to redo a radio station.
45:09
Speaker 3: I mean it's not, you know, because you have to
45:10
Speaker 3: work at very very odd times and everything in here.
45:14
Speaker 3: And you'll be able to see this soon on video.
45:17
Speaker 3: But nothing was subdoubt. These guys did everything from A
45:21
Speaker 3: to Z. And the kind of talent that you need
45:25
Speaker 3: to build something like this, my goodness, I can't imagine.
45:28
Speaker 3: And you're also dealing with a pretty old building here too.
45:31
Speaker 3: You are a very old bit. I'm well over one
45:33
Speaker 3: hundred years old. Yeah so, and oddly enough, I have
45:37
Speaker 3: been asked to read this little thing about vaccines. It
45:39
Speaker 3: just kind of worked out that way. Sult me get
45:40
Speaker 3: this in older adults to protect themselves agains severe respiratory disease.
45:44
Speaker 3: Talk to your doctor about flu, COVID nineteen and RSV
45:47
Speaker 3: vaccines risk class do more. Get started vaccines dot gov
45:50
Speaker 3: paid for by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
45:52
Speaker 3: That's actually what I wanted to talk about with you,
45:54
Speaker 3: mister Meadows.
45:54
Speaker 20: You dropped a commentary about vaccines I did at WV
45:58
Speaker 20: metronews dot com. It's available now in our front page
46:00
Speaker 20: and the bottom line, Dave are debate in this state
46:04
Speaker 20: around school vaccinations has been hijacked. It's been hijacked, and
46:09
Speaker 20: I think it's important that West Virginians know that there
46:13
Speaker 20: is data out there. Again, I've included this in my
46:16
Speaker 20: piece that says this is not important to West Virginians.
46:20
Speaker 20: It's not something that they want. And oh, by the way,
46:22
Speaker 20: these are conservative West Virginians. One of the arguments about
46:26
Speaker 20: this debate is it's a personal freedom choice and conservatives
46:30
Speaker 20: are behind this one hundred and ten percent. Well, there's
46:33
Speaker 20: a little survey that was provided to me by the
46:35
Speaker 20: West Virginia Chamber.
46:36
Speaker 5: I quote it in my piece.
46:37
Speaker 3: They asked this question.
46:40
Speaker 20: Respondents to the survey were asked do you generally think
46:44
Speaker 20: that vaccinations against childhood diseases such as measles and mumps
46:48
Speaker 20: are a good or a bad idea? An overwhelming eighty
46:51
Speaker 20: six point six percent answered good idea. Just five point
46:55
Speaker 20: five percent said bad idea. Eleven point three percent decided.
47:00
Speaker 5: But this is key.
47:01
Speaker 20: Among those eighty six point six percent of respondents that
47:05
Speaker 20: said it's a good idea, eighty two percent of those
47:07
Speaker 20: people identified as conservative.
47:11
Speaker 5: Who has a problem with this?
47:12
Speaker 3: Well, obviously some lawmakers think that people do have a
47:15
Speaker 3: problem with it. Obviously.
47:17
Speaker 8: Yeah.
47:17
Speaker 20: And I think the other part of my piece that
47:20
Speaker 20: I talk about is the fact that there is an outside,
47:23
Speaker 20: out of state interest group that is flooding this debate.
47:26
Speaker 20: They have targeted Delegate Scott Heckert of Wood County. He's
47:29
Speaker 20: become a focal point in this commentary. Heckerd noted on
47:34
Speaker 20: his Facebook page of the weekend, he received roughly fifty
47:36
Speaker 20: emails from senders with Michigan area codes in the subject.
47:40
Speaker 20: So they said from so and so, and they had
47:42
Speaker 20: a Michigan telephone number. Why is that a good thing?
47:45
Speaker 3: Well, I mean, let me just say here, and I'm
47:47
Speaker 3: not defending that by any strategy of the imagination. But
47:49
Speaker 3: I will say that's not uncommon. I mean it's not uncommon.
47:52
Speaker 3: It happens with a lot of hot button topics. You'll see,
47:55
Speaker 3: you know, things coming in from California, You'll see things
47:58
Speaker 3: coming in from other states.
47:59
Speaker 20: That's not entire I'm not a fan of it, but
48:01
Speaker 20: it's not entirely uncommon. This group, American Action Fund. It's
48:04
Speaker 20: led by an individual named Darren stid. There was a
48:07
Speaker 20: piece that he was quoted in Mountain State Spotlight. Here's
48:10
Speaker 20: what he said. He said, quote, if you don't behave
48:13
Speaker 20: like a conservative during the legislative session, something really bad
48:17
Speaker 20: is going to happen to you come primary season. Well,
48:20
Speaker 20: the data that we have says this isn't conservative. It's
48:24
Speaker 20: not what conservatives want, at least conservatives in the Mountain State.
48:27
Speaker 20: This is also the same group, according to Delegates Sarah
48:31
Speaker 20: Drennan of Putnam County, that dropped off and was caught
48:34
Speaker 20: delivering these fraudulent letters that purportedly were from constituents. And
48:39
Speaker 20: when lawmakers went to their constituents this had to do
48:41
Speaker 20: with the con issue, they didn't send them a certificate
48:45
Speaker 20: of need. They didn't send them. So this is the
48:47
Speaker 20: kind of group that is inserting itself into our debate.
48:52
Speaker 20: And my final point about this is if this passes,
48:56
Speaker 20: this group pushes for this, and lawmakers move forward with
48:58
Speaker 20: this group group on their so called campaign for liberty,
49:02
Speaker 20: They'll be on to their next state and their next
49:04
Speaker 20: issue while we in West Virginia deal with the fallout
49:08
Speaker 20: of what they wanted us to do. I think West
49:11
Speaker 20: Virginians need to call their legislators, understand how this group
49:15
Speaker 20: has informed or not informed opinions, and make their voice heard.
49:18
Speaker 20: And oh, by the way, this bill is going to
49:19
Speaker 20: be on third reading today potentially we don't know for
49:22
Speaker 20: sure yet, but potentially.
49:23
Speaker 3: Texas both sides, both sides is in all caps TJ.
49:27
Speaker 3: Both sides of this vaccine debate greatly, also in all caps,
49:31
Speaker 3: greatly overstate their case.
49:35
Speaker 20: Look, I have a bent on this. I think that's clear.
49:39
Speaker 20: I don't think we are overstating any case. When we
49:43
Speaker 20: talk about exposing our children to preventable communicable diseases that
49:48
Speaker 20: have long been eradicated.
49:49
Speaker 3: And West Virginia is a state that has led the nation,
49:52
Speaker 3: we can't say we're number one. And a whole lot
49:54
Speaker 3: of stuff, a whole lot of good stuff.
49:56
Speaker 5: TJ.
49:57
Speaker 3: But I mean, other states have monitored what we have
49:59
Speaker 3: done in West Virginia. But I can already tell you
50:04
Speaker 3: what a lot of the anti VAXs folks are going
50:06
Speaker 3: to say is they're going to point to your data
50:08
Speaker 3: and say, well, that came from the Chamber of Commerce,
50:10
Speaker 3: a liberal organization, which is laughable.
50:14
Speaker 5: But a lot of people are.
50:16
Speaker 3: Going to look at that and probably say, well, it
50:18
Speaker 3: came from the Chamber of Commerce.
50:19
Speaker 5: What do you expect?
50:19
Speaker 20: There are other surveys out there in the field, polls
50:22
Speaker 20: in the field right now, and I'll have guests on
50:24
Speaker 20: this week to talk about that. I've got even more
50:26
Speaker 20: data to back this up from other sources. Okay, that's
50:29
Speaker 20: independently done. And oh, by the way, that questions West Virginians,
50:33
Speaker 20: these six hundred people in this survey, West Virginians, that's important.
50:37
Speaker 3: Don't give me a national survey in this debate.
50:39
Speaker 5: All right?
50:40
Speaker 3: What else is going on to the dome that I
50:41
Speaker 3: know you guys aren't there today, but should be back tomorrow.
50:43
Speaker 20: There, right, be back tomorrow. Brad mclhagey coming up at
50:45
Speaker 20: ten oh six. He'll give us the rundown on this
50:47
Speaker 20: plus all other things happening at the legislature coming up
50:50
Speaker 20: at eleven o six. Matt Christiansen, former state health officer.
50:54
Speaker 20: He had a letter that went to the legislature over
50:57
Speaker 20: the weekend, actually on Friday. We'll talk with him. He
50:59
Speaker 20: and his fellow former state health officers have weighed in
51:03
Speaker 20: on this. My good buddy Mike McKenna from the Washington Times,
51:06
Speaker 20: longtime national Republican operative. He's weighing in on Elon Musk.
51:10
Speaker 20: And look here's another conservative, rock solid conservative, saying, eh,
51:14
Speaker 20: wait a minute, Elon may not be doing the best
51:16
Speaker 20: thing ever. We'll talk with him at eleven thirty. Plus
51:18
Speaker 20: phone calls, texts, x's tweets. I don't know what to
51:23
Speaker 20: call him nowadays, DMS, DM, DMS oh.
51:26
Speaker 3: Ok, all right, all right. So I had a text
51:29
Speaker 3: of the show earlier.
51:29
Speaker 5: TG.
51:30
Speaker 3: You don't know if you heard this or not, that
51:31
Speaker 3: they said a person said that they were in a
51:33
Speaker 3: church on Sunday and Trump's name was brought up. Again.
51:35
Speaker 3: I'm not a big fan of bringing up politics in church,
51:37
Speaker 3: but that's just me and people booed in. This texture
51:40
Speaker 3: says that people are starting to turn on Trump. Any
51:44
Speaker 3: sign of that, I'm going to say no to that.
51:46
Speaker 3: I don't know that people are starting to turn on Trump.
51:49
Speaker 3: I do think people are starting to question Trump more
51:54
Speaker 3: and more, and in the congregation of trump Ism and
51:57
Speaker 3: Republican populismquestions are starting to be asked. I think that's
52:02
Speaker 3: a good thing me personally, I don't want politics in
52:04
Speaker 3: the pulpit either. We need to be there to talk
52:06
Speaker 3: about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, not about politics.
52:08
Speaker 3: All right, You and mister Wilson will wax poetically on
52:12
Speaker 3: several subjects coming up at ten minuts of wax. Try
52:15
Speaker 3: not to get stains all over the new studio here
52:18
Speaker 3: came in.
52:19
Speaker 5: I don't want to be the first guy that spilled coffee.
52:21
Speaker 5: I was too scared of even bring any they get.
52:23
Speaker 3: In this sport. That's why they put down the black countertop,
52:25
Speaker 3: because of people like me and you. Jim Workman's already
52:28
Speaker 3: carved his name, he said, under the the on the desk,
52:30
Speaker 3: so you can see Ryan.
52:32
Speaker 13: I love that.
52:32
Speaker 5: I can wave to Ryan.
52:34
Speaker 3: We can't talk to him, but they're working on that now,
52:36
Speaker 3: but we can't see him.
52:37
Speaker 5: Baby steps.
52:38
Speaker 3: Coming up on the show tomorrow, John Lovejoy for Fresh Air,
52:41
Speaker 3: Jason Pizitello will be here and Kelly Anderson c AMC.
