- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 4th of
- 0:16February. Great to have your company.
- 0:18Hope you're going well. Here we are at the beginning of
- 0:21a new year in the Bible. If you have a look at the show
- 0:25notes, it has got a link to the outline that we'll be following
- 0:29each day for the next year. And you'll see that on Fridays
- 0:33we have finished the book of Psalms and we have now got the
- 0:38book of Proverbs ahead of us. And Proverbs are a little denser
- 0:42than Psalms, aren't they? Every sentence in the Proverbs
- 0:45is, well, it's a sermon in itself, waiting to be preached.
- 0:49So rather than ploughing through a full chapter of those, we have
- 0:52broken them up into far more digestible amounts so that we
- 0:57can really take to heart what God is teaching us through His
- 1:02proverbs. But that's coming on Friday.
- 1:05Right now we are going to see the transition, this major
- 1:08transition from this phenomenal character of Elijah to his
- 1:13assistant, his replacement Elijah.
- 1:17So why don't you settle in as we hear this passing of the baton
- 1:22and Elijah ending his ministry as we read together Second Kings
- 1:27Chapter 2. When the Lord was about to take
- 1:39Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elijah
- 1:44were travelling from Gilgal, and Elijah said to Elijah, Stay
- 1:49here, for the Lord has told me to go to Bethel.
- 1:54But Elijah replied, As surely as the Lord lives, and you yourself
- 1:59live, I will never leave you. So they went down together to
- 2:03Bethel. The group of prophets from
- 2:06Bethel came to Elijah and asked him, Did you know that the Lord
- 2:10is going to take your master away from you today?
- 2:14Of course I know, Elijah answered.
- 2:17But be quiet about it. Then Elijah said to Elijah, Stay
- 2:22here, for the Lord has told me to go to Jericho.
- 2:27But Elijah replied again, As surely as the Lord lives, and
- 2:32you yourself live, I will never leave you.
- 2:35So they went on together to Jericho.
- 2:38Then the group of prophets from Jericho came to Elisha and asked
- 2:42him, Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master
- 2:45away from you today? Of course I know, Elisha
- 2:50answered. But be quiet about it.
- 2:53Then Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here, for the Lord has told me
- 2:59to go to the Jordan River. But again Elijah replied, As
- 3:04surely as the Lord lives, and you yourself live, I will never
- 3:08leave you. So they went on together. 50 men
- 3:13from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance
- 3:16as Elijah and Elijah stopped beside the Jordan River.
- 3:20Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water
- 3:24with it. The river divided, and the two
- 3:28of them went across on dry ground.
- 3:31When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elijah,
- 3:35Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.
- 3:40And Elijah replied, Please let me inherit a double share of
- 3:45your spirit and become your successor.
- 3:49You have asked a difficult thing, Elijah replied.
- 3:54If you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your
- 3:59request, but if not, then you won't.
- 4:04As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of
- 4:08fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire.
- 4:12It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was
- 4:16carried by a whirlwind into heaven.
- 4:20Elisha saw it and cried out. My father, my father, I see the
- 4:26Chariots and charioteers of Israel, and as they disappeared
- 4:31from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress.
- 4:36Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak, which had fallen where he was
- 4:40taken up. Then Elisha returned to the Bank
- 4:44of the Jordan River. He struck the water with
- 4:47Elijah's cloak and cried out, Where is the Lord the God of
- 4:52Elijah? Then the river divided, and
- 4:57Elijah went across. When the group of prophets from
- 5:00Jericho saw from a distance what had happened, they exclaimed,
- 5:04Elijah's spirit rests upon Elijah.
- 5:07And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.
- 5:10Sir, they said, just say the word and fifty of our strongest
- 5:15men will search the wilderness for your master.
- 5:18Perhaps the spirit of the Lord has left him on some mountain or
- 5:21in some valley. No, Elijah said, don't send
- 5:25them. But they kept urging him until
- 5:29they shamed him into agreeing, and he finally said, all right,
- 5:33send them. So 50 men searched for three
- 5:36days but did not find Elijah. Elijah was still in Jericho when
- 5:41they returned. Didn't I tell you not to go?
- 5:45He asked. One day the leaders of the town
- 5:49of Jericho visited Elisha. We have a problem, my Lord, they
- 5:54told him. This town is located in pleasant
- 5:57surroundings as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is
- 6:01unproductive. Elisha said, Bring me a new bowl
- 6:06with salt in it. So they brought it to him.
- 6:10Then he went out to the spring that supplied the town with
- 6:13water and threw the salt into it.
- 6:16And he said, This is what the Lord says.
- 6:20I have purified this water. It will no longer cause death or
- 6:25infertility. And the water has remained pure
- 6:29ever since. Just as Elisha said.
- 6:33Elisha left Jericho and went up to Bethel.
- 6:36As he was walking along the road, a group of boys from the
- 6:39town began mocking and making fun of him.
- 6:42Go away, baldy, they chanted. Go away, baldy.
- 6:47Elisha turned around and looked at them, and he cursed them in
- 6:50the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the
- 6:54woods and mauled 42 of them. From there, Elisha went to Mount
- 7:00Carmel and finally returned to Samaria.
- 7:12Our Lord, it's so easy for us to mock will make fun of this group
- 7:16of boys yelling or insults at your prophet.
- 7:20Ah but Lord, we far too easily find ourselves on the wrong
- 7:25side, supporting those that probably don't deserve our
- 7:29support and pushing for an outcome that is probably not
- 7:34what you would hope for. Lord, we are sinful people.
- 7:38We are broken just like your people, Israel, but still You
- 7:44love us and you reach out to us with Jesus and you take away our
- 7:50sins. Lord, thank you for dealing with
- 7:53them once and for all on that cross on the hill of Calvary.
- 7:58Oh, we're so grateful for your transforming love and making a
- 8:04path to bring us home to you now.
- 8:07We love you and we pray all of things in the name of Jesus,
- 8:12Amen.
