- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Tippa K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas and we are on the last episode of

- 0:30And for this episode, I'm joined by my friend Caitlin from the No
- 0:33Sleep for Dramas blog and podcast.
- 0:35How are you, Caitlin? Hello, I'm happy to be here.
- 0:39I know you are because you are my crime friend, my crime and
- 0:45thriller Gurley. And when I said I was doing a
- 0:47spooky season, you were like, yes, you rang, you called.
- 0:53Yep, absolutely yes. So we are going to be covering
- 0:58the movie I Saw the Devil and I, yeah, I gave a list of movies
- 1:05and you were like, let's do I saw the Devil.
- 1:09Because I'll tell you why I said that.
- 1:11Because I watched this earlier this year for the first time,
- 1:16and then I saw it on your list and I was like, OK, well, I
- 1:20watched it early this year. I have to do it.
- 1:22Perfect. But also, I watched this because
- 1:25of our favorite crime podcast and she talked about this show.
- 1:30And so it was like, well, I need to check out this movie now that
- 1:35our crime podcast talked about it and reference that this
- 1:38actual crime, yeah, was reflected in this movie.
- 1:42And like, this movie was based off of this actual killer I was
- 1:45talking about in this episode. So I was like, oh, OK, I need to
- 1:48go watch this movie now. Full circle moment where we both
- 1:52listen to Korean true crime podcast.
- 1:54We love Mimi Mzico, and so shout out to her and her wonderful
- 1:59podcast. And so we both listened to this
- 2:02episode about this true crime that happened in Korea.
- 2:07And so they created this terrifying media for us to
- 2:11consume that is loosely based on this crime.
- 2:15And here we are several months later having watched this movie,
- 2:19this awful, awful movie. So we're going to start.
- 2:25We're going to talk about it. You know that.
- 2:27This is a classic crime movie in Korea.

- 2:37from Korea in the last 20 years. This is always on that list.

- 3:46All right, thank you guys. And we're going to get into it.
- 3:50We are going to talk about the movie I Saw the Devil, the IMDb
- 3:55synopsis reads A secret agent exacts revenge on a serial
- 3:59killer through a series of captures and releases.
- 4:03I think that IMDb synopsis actually gave a lot away because
- 4:07when I watched the movie I didn't know anything.
- 4:11I I was like, I think this movie has EBN in it and I just played
- 4:18it again at like 1:00 in the morning.
- 4:21I don't know why I am so brave in the wee hours of the morning,
- 4:26but I played it months ago like earlier this year and was the
- 4:32throne. It was shocking so I'll leave it
- 4:36at that. I think this IMDb synopsis gives
- 4:38too much weight because I walked in blind.
- 4:39But this movie was originally released August 12th, 2010.
- 4:45It is 2 hours and 24 minutes long.
- 4:48I think that's a little long. I will say it's a it's a little
- 4:51long. It's a touch long, yeah.
- 4:53The director and screenwriter is Kim Dewun.
- 4:56He has also directed things like The Age of Shadows, The Last
- 5:02Stand, The Good The Bad, The Weird, A Bittersweet Life, A
- 5:07Tale of Two Sisters, which I have also wanted to watch.
- 5:10That's another horror movie. So a lot of things on this list
- 5:14that, oh, Doctor Brain, the TV show.
- 5:17Great show, by the way. I knew you had to watch.
- 5:22It's on Apple TV if you want to know.
- 5:24Yeah, yeah. So lots of things on Hills
- 5:26filmography that are worth a watch.
- 5:28It's Co written by Pakhun Dong. This guy has written The Witch
- 5:34Part 1, The Subversion, as well as the sequel The Undressed New
- 5:39World, The Tiger. So some movies, some really
- 5:43interesting stuff. I haven't really watched much
- 5:47else besides the Which part won the subversion?
- 5:50Have you watched stuff on this list?
- 5:51No. I I have, I'll let you know my
- 5:55history when it comes to horror stuff.
- 5:56I have not tried the Witch because I feel like I'm going to
- 5:59be too scared. Oh, I don't know.
- 6:02OK. I recommend going in to watch
- 6:05the witch blind. Don't look up anything.
- 6:07Just go in and say you can. I'll tell you it has Kim Dami
- 6:11and Chebushi. Yeah.
- 6:14That's all you need to know. Yeah.
- 6:15All right. I just need to know if it's like
- 6:17possession stuff or is it's like serial killer crime.
- 6:21No, it's not. Possession stuff, serial killer
- 6:23crime stuff, I can handle that. Possession stuff, not so much.
- 6:26No, it's not spiritual. OK.
- 6:28All right, the cast for I Saw the Devil is Ivyungen.
- 6:32He plays SU Hyun, the secret agent, Chem and Sheik plays
- 6:36Zhang Kyung Chol, the serial killer.
- 6:39And then we have some other players.
- 6:42We got a couple older actors who play police officers or squad
- 6:47chiefs, Jung Ku Kuan and Chun Ho Jin.
- 6:51And then we have Chen Musong. Yes, that Chen Musong Musong.
- 6:56He plays Teju and I will not be saying like what his character
- 6:59is or does. And that's pretty much it.
- 7:02I'm not going to say anybody else in the cast list.
- 7:05It is. There are more players, but
- 7:07they're kind of more like bit players or cameos, depending on
- 7:10how you look at it. But I think we've come to the
- 7:14end of that section. Caitlin, how do you feel about I
- 7:19Saw the Devil? What are your thoughts SO?
- 7:22I rated this a 7.5 out of 10. I wanted this to be better than
- 7:28it was. The acting was brilliant.
- 7:31It was really good. But they advertise this, at
- 7:35least the trailers I saw before I watched this movie.
- 7:38I'm not saying everything advertise this, but they
- 7:41advertise this as like a cat and mouse movie.
- 7:46So I went in there expecting a cat and mouse movie and it
- 7:50really wasn't to me. It was very one sided even to
- 7:55the end where he did like the Choi Min Sheikh's character sort
- 8:00of took revenge at the end. But like it was still very one
- 8:04sided because you're up against like a special agent secret
- 8:08forces person who knows every torture method in the book
- 8:13against your average citizen serial killer who is still
- 8:17extremely violent and brutal but does not have the fighting
- 8:22capabilities as your secret Asian guy.
- 8:25So for me to advertise this as a cat and mouse serial killer and
- 8:31like The thing is too is like even if you have that set up and
- 8:34you're up against like a soldier combat heavy or like secret
- 8:40agent person against your regular citizen, make the serial
- 8:45killer extremely smart, like like and it's like a battle wits
- 8:49and Braun or something. But that wasn't the case either.
- 8:51It's like average citizen guy who is just really really
- 8:57horrible killer, like really horrible human being up against
- 9:02a secret agent who knows every torture method in the book and
- 9:07has every gadget you can possibly think of.
- 9:09And so to advertise this as a cat and mouse story I think was
- 9:14bad advertisement because it was extremely one sided when it came
- 9:18to the chase and the IT was like the secret agent was the cat and
- 9:25he was basically playing with his prey the entire time.
- 9:29And it was not an even cat and mouse story, which I love, which
- 9:34is why I watched this movie. I totally understand where
- 9:37you're coming from, but I also feel from a marketing
- 9:39standpoint, audiences are a little a little bit stupid.
- 9:43True. So if you try and sell it as
- 9:45something other than cat and mouse, it's just the cat is
- 9:49dominating most of the movie and the mouse isn't getting away
- 9:55necessarily at any point. I think that would confuse the
- 10:00audience and maybe bar them from wanting to watch the movie
- 10:04because the at. Least or you can just like I
- 10:08think in my mind it was like, well, just advertise as a
- 10:11revenge story. Like don't advertise it as a cat
- 10:14and mouse. Just say what it is, which is
- 10:17it's a straight up revenge story.
- 10:19I I'll go into like when it goes in the spoilers, I have some
- 10:21questions about that, but it's straight up revenge.
- 10:24It's not a cat and mouse. I see what you're saying.
- 10:26You unlock something for me that I first of all, Full disclosure,
- 10:30I have no notes, I am just flying by the seat of my pants.
- 10:34But something that you unlocked for me as you were talking was
- 10:38on 1st watch, my first watch of this again I went in blind, had
- 10:42no idea. I thought it was going to be
- 10:44actually a spiritual. It's like some sort of religious
- 10:49movie. Because of the title I saw the
- 10:51Devil, or the English title I saw the Devil, right?
- 10:54Yeah. So I was expecting some sort of
- 10:56exorcism, some sort of like shaman or Catholicism to come
- 11:01into play. That was not the case at all.
- 11:04Second of all, the revenge aspect of the movie was
- 11:09obviously very heavy-handed. That's the the bulk of the
- 11:12movie. Is this extended 2 1/2 hour
- 11:16revenge from Ebiungan's character, Torch him and
- 11:20Sheikh's character. I think I had issues with the
- 11:24fact that this man was trying to exact revenge, not on behalf of
- 11:32his of the woman that was killed, right?
- 11:35Right. It's like for him, yeah.
- 11:39Because you, you took something away from me.
- 11:41Like you, it wasn't necessarily like for her.
- 11:48It's hard to explain this feeling but like it's almost
- 11:51like she has nothing to do with it.
- 11:53Yeah, which is why I wanted to pose the question like, who do
- 11:57you think the devil is in the title?
- 12:00Right. And that's the the question that
- 12:03the movie poses to the audience is right amongst all of this
- 12:08sadistic, horrifying violence that each character inflicts on
- 12:15each other, on other characters, is it sanctioned enough where
- 12:22you absolve Evo Gunn's character of blame?
- 12:25And you're like, I'm still OK with his revenge and he's not
- 12:28the devil or he's lost his soul in the process of him doing this
- 12:33revenge and he has become on par with this devil that he's
- 12:38chasing. Yeah.
- 12:41It it's up to audience interpretation, it's totally up
- 12:43to each individual person as you watch it, what your own moral
- 12:47compass is, what your own comfort level is, what the
- 12:51violence may be with your own, how triggering the movie will be
- 12:57for you. I personally I think he lost his
- 13:02marbles. Oh yeah, like the entire movie
- 13:05to me is him descending. He went too far, yeah.
- 13:08Into this man that he became his prey.
- 13:12Yeah, he became the man that he was trying to exact revenge on.
- 13:18And I am all for you're talking to a person who loves.
- 13:23Sounds terrible, but I love violence and I am pretty
- 13:27desensitized to a lot of stuff. This movie was was a step beyond
- 13:33to that. It was really brutal.
- 13:35It was extremely disgusting. And it it just as much as I
- 13:43wanted to support Evan's character and his vigilante
- 13:46justice, because I support vigilante justice in general.
- 13:50Like for other media, I'm always like, yeah, like, stick it to
- 13:53him. In this case, he was definitely
- 13:57taking on the mantle of being the same.
- 14:01He was almost the same, right? The only difference between him
- 14:06and Shaman Sheik, and I don't know if this is spoiler
- 14:08territory or not, but we're I'm answering your question.
- 14:12The only saving grace for Eben's character is that he still had
- 14:16some semblance of humanity by the end of the movie.
- 14:18He had remorse. He had sadness.
- 14:20He, he had, he felt some type of way about the crimes, about the
- 14:24situation that was created from his actions and Chim and Sheik,
- 14:29the serial killer did not. He had no humanity.
- 14:33He did not feel remorse. He was almost clinical in the
- 14:37way that he exacted some of these violent, violent.
- 14:42Actions. But at the same time, I would
- 14:44argue to see the special agent was also clinical in that way
- 14:49because that's he was trained to do it.
- 14:53So but he was had one target like where is the?
- 14:56Serial killer what I think was Evie Youngun's character
- 14:59regretted doing it, but did he though?
- 15:03I. Think, I mean walking down the
- 15:05street at the end, I don't. I think he was relieved it was
- 15:09done. I think it was really.
- 15:11That differently. Yeah, you read that.
- 15:15Glad that it happened and like the ending played out how he
- 15:20wanted it to, but I don't think he regretted it.
- 15:24Oh my God, we totally read the ending differently.
- 15:28So you think it's relief he's crying out of?
- 15:30Oh yeah. He's like I'm done with my
- 15:32mission. I accomplished what I wanted.
- 15:34I think he's crying out of, I mean, not saying he's not
- 15:37relieved, but I think he's crying out of a a plethora of
- 15:42emotions, one of them being like regret because this whole thing
- 15:45got way out of hand he couldn't control.
- 15:48Oh no, I think he cried because he was like I finally got my
- 15:51revenge. I now can mourn how I wanted to.
- 15:54Oh my gosh, well, I don't. I don't disagree with you
- 15:58though. Oh God, this is but it's very
- 16:02ambiguous. It's so again.
- 16:05It's up to interpretation. Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:09Yeah. Which is the thrill of like
- 16:10watching it is. The way you come at it is not
- 16:14wrong. The way however you watch it is
- 16:16not wrong. There's not a wrong answer for
- 16:20how you think these characters are feeling or if they're right
- 16:27or wrong. It's not.
- 16:28It's not. You can feel however you want to
- 16:31feel. Right, because like for example,
- 16:33with the title, you could see that both ways you can do like
- 16:37OK, serial killer guy was is always, always confident, like
- 16:43extremely confident. He's not going to get caught.
- 16:46Then he meets his worst enemy, who's probably more, I wouldn't
- 16:50say more brutal than him, but can be as brutal as he is, and
- 16:56he has to. And he's like being chased by
- 16:59this guy. It wasn't like an equal.
- 17:01It wasn't like they were both kind of just living parallel.
- 17:05No, he's the prey of this guy. So he saw the devil.
- 17:09Or you can take it from a perspective of the secret agent
- 17:12where he was not aware that this dude is out there or like
- 17:18blissfully unaware. And then he realizes this kind
- 17:21of killer is out there in his home country, and he sees the
- 17:27devil and now has to, I don't know, I want to say repent, but
- 17:32it's not repent. Or it could be in the course of
- 17:35his vigilante revenge quest, he sees the devil within.
- 17:41Himself. Exactly.
- 17:42Which I am inclined to believe that version of, right, the
- 17:46interpretation. So it's like a vicious cycle
- 17:49that he's discovered that he has this devilry within himself,
- 17:52right? And it's scary.
- 17:55Yeah. All right, so didn't mean to get
- 17:58that deep and philosophical right off the bat, but this
- 18:02movie, as we said before, is not for everybody.
- 18:08It is very hard to watch. It is not a slow burn either.
- 18:13It gets going very fast like the first intro sequence will.
- 18:19If you can't get past that, I don't think you will be able to
- 18:22watch the rest of the movie. No, no, like I'll tell you one
- 18:25thing Like I was, I think I talked about this in another, I
- 18:29think it was Liliana's podcast that I recorded recently about
- 18:34crime in general. Crime movies do not have the
- 18:38censorship that the Korean dramas do.
- 18:42So they are so much more violent and so much more like the show
- 18:47more stuff, show more nakedness, show more weaponry, show more
- 18:53violence in general. So if you have never seen a
- 18:57crime movie versus a crime Korean drama, do not pick this
- 19:02one as your first first go into crime movies.
- 19:07Like DM me to ask. It's just like.
- 19:10Taking an AP class when you've been in like remedial?
- 19:14Yeah, it goes from zero to 100. I mean, like, you guys know me,
- 19:20I can watch pretty much anything when it comes to violence.
- 19:23I'm very desensitized to it. This had me cringing when I
- 19:27watched it earlier this year. Like, there's two specific
- 19:31scenes in this movie that I was like, Oh my God.
- 19:35And I've watched every single episode of Criminal Minds, so
- 19:39like, and those get brutal. So that will tell you something
- 19:44about how violent and how gory this movie is.
- 19:50There's just so much that there's a lot of.
- 19:52I remember saying that the serial killer displays almost
- 19:56like a clinical sense of the way that he enacts the violence is
- 20:01almost clinical, but there's just a sense of like no pathos.
- 20:05Right. Yeah.
- 20:07When he does that. He doesn't have any empathy.
- 20:09He doesn't. He doesn't think he'll ever get
- 20:12caught until he does. He lives on the cusp of society,
- 20:16so no one cares and no one has cared.
- 20:19Like he's old. He's a older yeah person, so
- 20:24he's been doing this for a really long time.
- 20:26So I have some fun facts, and maybe it's a bit much to call
- 20:29them fun facts at this point when we're talking about
- 20:32something so terrible. I also have a fun fact.
- 20:35But it's not really. Fun.
- 20:37Why? Why didn't you say yours first?
- 20:39So when we going back to the conversation of like the I saw
- 20:43the devil thing, where one of the parts of him seeing the
- 20:47devil is like him realizing this type of killer is out there.
- 20:51Yeah. Fun fact, the FBI says there's
- 20:5525 to 50 active serial killers in the United States at one time
- 21:04currently. 25 to 50 active serial killers now.
- 21:10Right now. Yeah, right now, this year.
- 21:12Are half of them truck drivers? Because I remember saying
- 21:15something very well about the truck drivers being.
- 21:18Could very well be. Like it was a system of they
- 21:22were finding bodies along the major highways and then they
- 21:25overlaid the map of the big truck drivers and the 18
- 21:28Wheelers where they were going. And it was identical to the
- 21:32routes. And they were just dumping the
- 21:34bodies where they we're trucking.
- 21:36And I was like, oh God, here we go.
- 21:38Something everybody already knew, but.
- 21:42Yeah, but yeah, so that's the statistic is like FBI says 25 to
- 21:4650 serial killers are always active.
- 21:49It's about. 25. To 50, and that's United States
- 21:52alone. That's United States alone.
- 21:54Like some of these countries. Other countries don't even want
- 21:57to report that statistic to even tell people how many people they
- 22:01have in their country. They don't want to know,
- 22:04basically. So that's a statistic for you.
- 22:09OK, well, my that's not a fun fact.
- 22:12That's a disturbing fact. It's a disturbing fact.
- 22:16All right, so my fun facts are a little less morbid.
- 22:21Maybe the Korean Media Rating Board.
- 22:24We were talking about the rating of the movie and cuts to the
- 22:28movie. The Korean Media Rating Board
- 22:30forced Kim Diwan, the director, to recut the film for its
- 22:34theatrical release, objecting to its violent content.
- 22:37Otherwise, the film would have gotten a restricted rating,
- 22:40preventing any sort of release in theaters or on home video.
- 22:45You're just shaking your head. You're like, Oh my God, like
- 22:48what we got is crazy. The international cut did away
- 22:53with a lot of sequences the director regarded as unnecessary
- 22:56and added all the scenes banned by the Korean censor board.
- 23:01Yet it's the Korean cut that runs longer than the
- 23:05international one, which I found really interesting during the
- 23:09shoot. And this is also like this next
- 23:12one. I was like, I don't know why he
- 23:14would. I've heard this.
- 23:16I've heard this one. OK, during the shoot, Chairman
- 23:19Chic, which is the serial killer in the movie, was so into
- 23:23character that he got the idea of beating up a random stranger
- 23:28who talked rudely to him in an elevator, only to realize he has
- 23:31turned violent during the shoot and eventually freaking out.
- 23:36Following the film's release, he met a girl in the elevator who
- 23:39freaked out and panicked seeing him having watched the film.
- 23:42To calm her down, he told her. I don't kill people anymore, so
- 23:45you don't need to be worried about me.
- 23:46I'm human, not a killer. Again, I think I would have
- 23:49taken that to my grave. I would not say.
- 23:52I mean, it was I turned violent. There's been other actors who
- 23:58have come out over the years who have played extremely violent
- 24:01serial killers in dramas and movies who say this exact thing.
- 24:07Like they're like I it's extremely hard for me to get
- 24:11over a role to get past that to, especially if they're a method
- 24:15actor, so. I don't believe.
- 24:17In nice acting, I don't yeah, I don't really either.
- 24:20I don't really either. But like, it's this is not a
- 24:23uncommon statement. I've heard this all the time
- 24:27from people who've played violent serial killers in
- 24:30dramas. I've heard this as well.
- 24:32Because it takes them a little while to get out of the
- 24:35character. And then sometimes they, like
- 24:38have to, they like enter depression afterwards because
- 24:41they're like, I cannot believe I just shot that scene and did all
- 24:45that horrible stuff and now I need to go talk to a therapist.
- 24:49Right. There's two stories that I
- 24:50recall that have nothing at all to do.
- 24:53One sort of has something to do with this movie and the other
- 24:56one has nothing at all to do with it.
- 24:58But it just goes to show that I feel like method acting is
- 25:01bullshit. One has to do with Kristen
- 25:05Stewart playing Bella Swan in Twilight.
- 25:08So there's this. Because I used to be so into the
- 25:13Twilight series, I remember reading this, I think it was an
- 25:17interview that she did where she was talking about having to let
- 25:21go of Bella Swan after filming the first movie.
- 25:24That she was so into it and she was so entrenched in the
- 25:27character. And the only way that she could
- 25:30let go of the character was basically driving back from
- 25:34Washington back to LA or wherever she lived at the time,
- 25:38I think in Bella's truck. So in that red pickup, that old
- 25:42red pickup, she drove all the way back to LA and that that
- 25:46drive basically released her from the confines of Bella
- 25:52Swan's characterization. And I was like, I remember
- 25:55reading that and being like, that's weird.
- 25:56This was over a decade ago, like right, Basically almost mid
- 26:002000s that I read this or saw this story.
- 26:03And I was like, that's weird. Now I'd say get the fuck out of
- 26:06here, bro. Like that is the stupidest thing
- 26:09I've ever heard. Second of all, more recently,
- 26:13Nicolas Cage played, I think, a serial killer in long legs,
- 26:18which is a 2024 horrible so which I have yet to see.
- 26:22I couldn't get out to see it this year.
- 26:25And they asked him like, was it difficult getting out of
- 26:27character, like getting in and out of the character and stuff
- 26:30like that. And Nicholas Cage has been an
- 26:33actor for a very long time. Nick Cage goes, no, it wasn't
- 26:38difficult. Like, you just show up and you
- 26:40do a job and you, you know, you find your spots that you get
- 26:43into the character and you just, you don't take that home.
- 26:46You don't like. He was like, no, it's not
- 26:50difficult to cut. Get in and out of character.
- 26:53Yeah, it's crazy. But no, I didn't have any
- 26:56trouble taking anything. Like it was so funny to hear
- 27:01this sort of seasoned actor talk about getting into basically a
- 27:07serial, another disturbing character.
- 27:11And he was like, no, you just show up and do a job.
- 27:15You're playing make believe and then you go home and eat like a
- 27:19pop pocket. Like it's not a big deal.
- 27:22So yeah, hearing this thing from Tim and Chica, I was like, well
- 27:27it sounds like he was method acting and I think method act is
- 27:34bullshit. So anyway, this is a long outro
- 27:39to this one pack. Anyway, this movie marks Trim
- 27:43and Sheik's second role as a serial killer, following 2005's
- 27:46Lady Vengeance, known in the US as Lady Vengeance.
- 27:50That is a Pak Chanuk movie that I watched I think one or two
- 27:54years ago. And my review is up on the
- 27:57Patreon feed because I did the whole Vengeance trilogy from Pak
- 28:01Chanuk and I, I just recovered actually like last week from
- 28:06doing that. And then the last one fact I
- 28:11have is this movie and the Chaser from 2008 are loosely
- 28:14based on murder events committed by the serial killer Yu Yong
- 28:19Tol, also known as the Raincoat Killer from 2003 to 2004.
- 28:25And that is the crime that we are referencing earlier.
- 28:31Do you have more info on the Rainco killer that you care to
- 28:33share or? Was the rainco killer the one
- 28:37that the Netflix documentary that came out?
- 28:39A couple. Years ago, yeah.
- 28:42That's a great documentary, I highly recommend that if you
- 28:46want to know more about that killer.
- 28:48I I think it's actually called The Raincoat.
- 28:50Killer it is. It is.
- 28:52Yeah, yeah. That's if you want to know more
- 28:55about that killer, go and watch that documentary.
- 28:57I think it's very well done because it's not like one of
- 29:00those things where this is what we did and this was what we
- 29:04caught them. They're like they're they were
- 29:06it was a fudged investigation. So the documentary also goes
- 29:10into like, what went wrong? And they actually brought in
- 29:15like, people who worked the case and like now are retired or
- 29:19whatever, whatever, or reporters or whatever.
- 29:22So I thought they did a very good job in terms of having a
- 29:26objective perspective when it came to reporting on the case
- 29:30and like, what happened and what went wrong during the case.
- 29:33Yeah, because they royally they did, they royally effed up.
- 29:39Yeah, What really affected me was listening to the not the
- 29:42testimony, but the interview from the female CSI who was on
- 29:46the case, who was trying to get fingerprints from one of the
- 29:50bodies to try and identify one of the victims.
- 29:54And she was basically talking to the victim and like, please,
- 29:58like, let me try and get this fingerprint because it was so
- 30:01decomposed at that point that they couldn't.
- 30:05And she tried over and over and over and over again to get a
- 30:10clean print. And finally she did and was able
- 30:14to identify that victim. But it was her persistence and
- 30:17the fact that she was a female CSI in the mid 2000, almost 20
- 30:21years ago. And that was very male dominated
- 30:25industry and it was affecting to hear her talk about the case and
- 30:30how she approached it and seeing the victims and stuff like that.
- 30:34So I highly recommend watching The Raincoat Killer, which is on
- 30:37Netflix. It's a Netflix documentary like
- 30:39you said. And then obviously you can
- 30:41listen to Korean True Crimes podcast episode on the same
- 30:47topic. All right, what would you?
- 30:50So you gave it 7 1/2 out of 10. What would that equate to in
- 30:56five out of five Soulja bottles? I would say like 3, like just in
- 31:04the middle, because it wasn't bad, it's just it wasn't what I
- 31:08was expecting it to be. So I think I went in with
- 31:12expectations and when those expectations weren't met, my
- 31:17rating went down. See, I had no expectations.
- 31:20So I feel like my rating was 4 four out of fives hold you
- 31:26bottles. But again, I was a little bit.
- 31:30Why did this story about all of these female victims and his
- 31:36relation that was I'm not going to say who it was.
- 31:38I'm trying to like keep less spoilers out of this section.
- 31:42But you know, the females that were brutalized it, it ends up
- 31:49not become, it's not about them, it's about these two men.
- 31:53And I think that rubbed me the wrong way.
- 31:55Yeah, yeah, 'cause they basically did what the serial
- 31:59killer was doing to these women and that was dehumanizing them.
- 32:03Like they weren't, they were, it didn't matter.
- 32:06They were plot points. They weren't, they weren't even
- 32:10the fiance, like the fiance wasn't really like she was a
- 32:13plot point at the beginning of this of the movie and that was
- 32:16it, right? Never discussed again.
- 32:19Right, like stepping stones for these men to have their little
- 32:23battle. Yeah, even the father too.
- 32:26Like it wasn't just the two main people, it was the father also.
- 32:30Almost like a pride thing. Like I can't believe they did.
- 32:32Like this guy did this to us, even though I'm a cop and you're
- 32:37a security guy. Yeah, all of them were too.
- 32:41Pride it was. It was improving.
- 32:43The serial killer. Like they were revelling and
- 32:46angry at the irony of the fiance getting brutalized and murdered
- 32:53because of what they do for a living.
- 32:56Exactly, and how important they are.
- 32:58Yeah. And I don't think it's overt,
- 33:01but it's there. Oh it, I mean it's there.
- 33:05It's there. But then the first scene shows
- 33:08so much in this movie. Well, not the first scene.
- 33:13The 1st, the first crime scene. The first crime scene.
- 33:17I mean, we'll talk about it, we'll talk about it and suppose
- 33:20we'll start there. We'll start at the beginning.
- 33:22But honestly, that's a huge reason of why my score is a
- 33:25four. And also I think the movie is
- 33:28just too long. Yeah, it's way too long.
- 33:31It just keeps going. Yeah, so, but it's well done.
- 33:35It looks great. I think it holds.
- 33:36Up the acting is amazing, acting is amazing acting was great
- 33:40it's. Got a lot of moral quandaries
- 33:42What would you do? How would you handle this?
- 33:44What if you you know what would how would you pass judgement on
- 33:49EB Youngun's character? Because I think everybody is in
- 33:52agreement like we should just burn the serial killer at the
- 33:56stake, right? Yeah, no one's but.
- 33:58That also is the way the story wanted you to think.
- 34:03What does justice look like for you?
- 34:05What does justice look like for you?
- 34:09And I don't know if it's necessarily put him through the
- 34:12justice system. My thing though is if this
- 34:14wasn't the fiance, if because he's not a cop, the father was
- 34:20but he's not. So if the serial killer did not
- 34:24go after the fiance and it was just a random girl, yeah, this
- 34:28movie never would have happened. Exactly.
- 34:31And never would have like all the other.
- 34:33Victims don't get exactly like he's not doing this on behalf of
- 34:38like all of these women and and the women that he didn't kill
- 34:44but raped or, or somehow brutalized.
- 34:49And I I take issue with that. Like the motive, the intention
- 34:53behind his. It's it's yeah, it's not clean,
- 34:58right? It's muddy.
- 34:59So yeah, anyway, 4 out of five, three out of five soldier
- 35:03bottles. And we are going to talk more at
- 35:06length about what the hell happens in this movie because
- 35:10we've said like the basic inciting incident, but we
- 35:14haven't exactly said what what he does in the in the first
- 35:18sequence. And what is the cat and mouse
- 35:21thing that happens throughout the movie, which really we
- 35:27there's just so much that we haven't talked about.
- 35:29So we'll talk about it in the spoilers section right after
- 35:32this. The greatest trick, Houston, we
- 35:35have a problem. I am the father.
- 35:37I see dead people the devil ever pulled.
- 35:41Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain was
- 35:44convincing the world you can't handle the truth.
- 35:48He didn't exist. No, what's in the box?
- 35:53OK, we're on the other side of spoilers.
- 35:55We are going to spoil exactly what happens.
- 35:58And I saw the devil. So if you want to preserve your
- 36:02first watch, I feel like we've already spoiled some things,
- 36:04like larger plot beats about the movie.
- 36:06But really, we're gonna get into the nitty gritty.
- 36:09Here we go, Caitlin. Let's talk about this intro
- 36:12sequence because. This so like the the real intro
- 36:16sequence, like the car on the side of the road.
- 36:17The car on the side of the. Road.
- 36:19OK, OK, which it is. Disturbing on so many levels.
- 36:24You see the fiance in the car and it's the camera is the point
- 36:28of view of the serial killer, right?
- 36:30Which automatically you're like, oh I've been in the car
- 36:34throughout all of the intro credits with the serial killer
- 36:37the whole time. Yep.
- 36:39And I had no idea he was just driving on these snowy roads and
- 36:44he you can see this little van that's off to the side of the
- 36:48road stranded. She's waiting for a tow truck to
- 36:52come and change her tire. And she's on the phone with Eben
- 36:56Gun and she is as sweet as pie. But even the voice that she has
- 37:00is like, I can't even describe it.
- 37:03It is. It's not agile, but it's just
- 37:06like this sweet little like voice that she has on the phone.
- 37:10She's saying that she was visiting an orphanage earlier in
- 37:14the day. She's saying, oh, if I ever have
- 37:16children, I want to raise them out here in the countryside
- 37:21where the air is fresh. And like, she's talking all this
- 37:23shit right? And you're like, oh, my God,
- 37:25this sweet girl. What the fuck is going to happen
- 37:28to the sweet lady? Oh, you.
- 37:30Immediately know what's going to.
- 37:31Happen. You know what's going to happen
- 37:32to her. Dark Rd.
- 37:34No one's around, it's snowing and she has a flat tire.
- 37:37Like equation for death right there.
- 37:40She's. Going to die, she's going to
- 37:42die. So the guy gets out of the car
- 37:46and what's great is you don't see what the serial killer looks
- 37:49like right away. You just see him like walk up to
- 37:52the car, knock on the window. She lowers the window.
- 37:55What does he want? He's like, hey, what's going on?
- 37:58I say, you know, it's you're going to wait a long time for a
- 38:00tow truck and all this stuff. And he goes to check on her,
- 38:05the, I guess, tire that needs replacing.
- 38:08And Eva Gun's telling her, oh, just wait for the tow truck,
- 38:10like telling me it's fine, don't worry about it.
- 38:13It's when she hangs up the phone with Eva Gun and the guy comes
- 38:17back up to the front door. That's when you see him through
- 38:20the window, his face through the window, checking her out.
- 38:24Of the passenger seat. From SO.
- 38:25It's like even like the camera angle, it's like you are looking
- 38:31at them as if you are Pat like sitting in the passenger seat
- 38:35for the rest of the scene even when you're looking out the
- 38:38windshield after this too. So that's kind of like you're in
- 38:41the car with, yes. And I'll tell you, the amount of
- 38:45tension that is in this scene should be studied.
- 38:50It is so good. It's great.
- 38:55Well, I think part of the tension though is in this movie
- 38:57does this really well is they know how to play with the
- 39:01silences of the movie. Like they take the music out and
- 39:06they either just have what's going on in, like the actions,
- 39:10like the rustling in the snow or like the dead silence that snow
- 39:14make gives you. Like they took the music out of
- 39:17this for this entire sequence until he starts attacking the
- 39:22car. That's when the music comes back
- 39:25in. So like you are watching this
- 39:27from the passenger seat of this car, dead silent.
- 39:31Just having this guy like having the perspective of the woman
- 39:35sitting in the driver's seat, like what she hears for most of
- 39:38the scene. So, like, you realize she didn't
- 39:42hear the guy come walking back up to her car because there was
- 39:45snow on the ground. She didn't hear him walking
- 39:48around the other side of her car.
- 39:50Like, that is brilliant. Like, what they do with the lack
- 39:55of music in this movie is brilliant.
- 39:58Yeah, it's. Unnerving.
- 40:00Yeah. And what's terrifying as well is
- 40:03that, you know, this is the the serial killer.
- 40:06You know, this is a villain. He's driving a school bus.
- 40:12He's driving like a little kids school bus, the kind that picks
- 40:14up the little kindergarteners. In the city, right?
- 40:18And this is the serial killer. And you're like, wait a minute,
- 40:21wait a minute. You're telling me the serial
- 40:24killer is the Ajashi that picks up the little elementary
- 40:28schoolers and the preschoolers and the school bus?
- 40:31Yep. Oh my God, it's diabolical.
- 40:34So the moment when you see her get nervous, finally you see her
- 40:39get nervous because you're like, where did he go?
- 40:42And she turns on her high beams and he's fucking right there in
- 40:48front of the car. Oh my God, The way I screamed,
- 40:54the scream that I scrumped the first time I saw this movie.
- 40:59And again, I was watching at like one 1:30 in the morning.
- 41:04I could not be consoled. I was like all over.
- 41:07I was tossing sheets. I was tossing pills.
- 41:10It was I was a whole wreck. And he starts pounding on her
- 41:15car, on the windows, on everything, trying to get to her
- 41:19with this hammer, and he just starts hammering at her.
- 41:24So pounding on her body, on her cranium, she's screaming she
- 41:28can't get out the passenger. Like, well, we're talking about
- 41:30violence in this movie. You see him hit like you see the
- 41:34hammer hit her and blood go off of it like this movie is
- 41:39violent. And he's not stopping.
- 41:42He's not. Like he's not.
- 41:43There's nothing that's going to stop this man from killing her.
- 41:48So and the moment where she's looking up at him directly after
- 41:53he's hit her a few times in the head, right?
- 41:55And her alarmed eyes just looking at him and he hits her
- 41:59one more time to knock her out. Yeah.
- 42:03And then you finish the credits as he's dragging her body out
- 42:06and you hear the vibrating of the phone and it's, it's done.
- 42:11It's done. That's the intro I saw.
- 42:14The double pops up on the screen and you're like well fuck.
- 42:18Yeah, And like it's snowing. So like immediately, every time
- 42:22I see this scene, I'm like, well, people are going to find
- 42:24the car and see the blood and obviously.
- 42:28There's an arrogance about the crime.
- 42:30There's an arrogance, there's an extreme arrogance about the
- 42:33killer all the time, the entire movie.
- 42:36But also it's like one of those things where he came off to me
- 42:40as a killer of like, he's not gonna stop until someone stops
- 42:43him, whether that's killing him or arresting him.
- 42:47He's not one of those killers that yeah, he just, he wouldn't,
- 42:51he wouldn't have stopped like people.
- 42:53He had to be stopped. It's not even just like a
- 42:56conscious choice of like, he's going to go kill somebody every
- 42:59five months. No, he likes doing it and he
- 43:02does it well, and he's arrogant enough to leave whatever
- 43:07evidence behind because he knows he's gotten away with it so
- 43:10long. Yep, Yep.
- 43:11It's just just the worst kind of person.
- 43:15He's like, almost like a narcissist like.
- 43:17Yeah, he's a narcissist. Yeah, so he drags her body out.
- 43:22You see him clinically looking at her body later, later in his
- 43:28lair, and she's covered. She's completely naked, covered
- 43:32in clear plastic, and she's still alive.
- 43:36Yep. So barely alive, he's looking at
- 43:39her body like, Oh yeah, you're cut.
- 43:41You're. He says her body is kind of
- 43:43soft, so this should be very easy.
- 43:46And you're like, Oh my God, he's going to chop her up.
- 43:49Oh my God, again, more you're just more surprised.
- 43:54Like what else could he possibly do?
- 43:56He's probably already raped her. He's he's taken off all of her
- 43:59clothes. He's got this whole setup here.
- 44:03He's got all these rusty ass knives that he's going to carve
- 44:06her up with. And she weakly says, like,
- 44:09please don't kill me, I'm pregnant.
- 44:14What I love is she says, please don't kill me.
- 44:16And he goes, why? Why not, right?
- 44:18What's brutal is, you know, he's whatever reason she's gonna
- 44:23give, he's gonna kill her anyway.
- 44:24But he takes the time to talk to his victim and ask her why not?
- 44:29What do you Why do you think I should not kill you?
- 44:31Yeah, and honestly, this is a trope that happens in crime
- 44:35stuff all the time, especially if the victim is a woman where
- 44:39he'll she'll claim she's pregnant thinking that it will
- 44:44enact some sympathy. And when it comes to the killer,
- 44:47it never does. It never does unless it's a
- 44:51killer. Like there's been some criminal
- 44:53mind episodes where like the objective of the person who did
- 44:57the kidnapping was not to kill the person, it was to impregnate
- 45:00the person. So like, it was like, this is a
- 45:03trope that happens when it comes to women victims all the time.
- 45:08So like when I first was watching this and I was like,
- 45:11she before she said it, I was like, she's going to say she's
- 45:14pregnant, isn't she? Because between like, between
- 45:16like talking in the car with the special agent, like.
- 45:20Talking about, she went. I want to raise our kid out in
- 45:22the countryside. I'm like, Oh no, Oh no.
- 45:26Oh no, yeah, the foreshadowing was there.
- 45:29Yeah. Shit.
- 45:32So anyway. And then he just doesn't even
- 45:34say anything. He just hacks off her arm or her
- 45:37head I think it was. He beheads her.
- 45:39At that point, well, I think it was the arm 1st and then it
- 45:42eventually became everything. Yeah, he just did all the joints
- 45:47basically. And again, without any like he
- 45:50would be cleaning a warehouse that he worked at or anything,
- 45:54his own house, cleaning the blood out off the floor, putting
- 45:58all the water in The Dirty viscera into the sewer system
- 46:03that he has down there. And like nothing like he has.
- 46:08No, there's nothing behind his eyes when he's doing all this.
- 46:13Yeah, in the middle of nowhere. He's like, not near
- 46:15civilization. Yeah, and that is our serial
- 46:20killer. We got our nice intro with the
- 46:22serial killer. When they find her body is the
- 46:27next really in your face impactful moment?
- 46:31Because I think a few kids find her ear in a black plastic bag
- 46:37out in a field. Yeah, triggering a whole police
- 46:41investigation, which is a circus.
- 46:43It's a chaos mess, like it's like a circus.
- 46:48There's media there, there's CSI there, there's cops there that
- 46:52look like they don't know what they're doing.
- 46:54They shouldn't be there. Like they're just there to look
- 46:57important, yeah. And the minute they find
- 47:01something, everybody rushes over, which is like the.
- 47:04Entirety destroying the crime scene.
- 47:07Destroying the crime scene, letting reporters come in,
- 47:09letting any random cops trample everywhere.
- 47:12You already set up a grid to search this river, and then the
- 47:16minute somebody finds one body part, you abandoned anybody
- 47:21part. It's not anybody part, but like,
- 47:23you abandoned the grid that you built to not compromise
- 47:28anything. And the minute they found one
- 47:31body part, everybody runs to that thing.
- 47:34It's like you're destroyed. Whatever.
- 47:37Yeah. For the victims and this
- 47:39particular victim, this body, Yeah.
- 47:42Was astounding. Yeah.
- 47:44Now, I will say she was a daughter of a 30 something year
- 47:49detective, probably more than just a detective.
- 47:53So everybody probably was like, I we need to help out with this
- 47:56thing because he's extremely important.
- 47:59But like even him, like granted, he was the father.
- 48:02Yes, you are grieving and yeah, you're going to go find your
- 48:07daughter who's dead and her body parts are in this field.
- 48:12He just, like, abandons everything and just like, runs
- 48:15into this mess and like, refuses.
- 48:18He has like 5 people trying to hold them back saying you cannot
- 48:22go in there. Yeah.
- 48:24And it's just like, are you joking?
- 48:28Are you kidding me? And then to top it all off,
- 48:31because there's so many people in this scene, the person
- 48:35carrying the body part right that already probably has been
- 48:39compromised trips and the head falls out-of-the-box anyway and
- 48:45becomes even more compromised. It I couldn't believe when they
- 48:49when they dropped her head and it goes rolling out in front of
- 48:53Ebunglin who showed up finally. I was like, this could not be
- 48:58more traumatizing for the family members and him like the fiance
- 49:03and it couldn't be more of a botched investigation to to get
- 49:10justice for her. Like if they wanted to grab any
- 49:13evidence, it would be long gone by the time it reached any
- 49:17facility that was going to process this.
- 49:20And it is an assault on the body.
- 49:24I I found it like a a separate assault on the body.
- 49:28Exactly. And sadly and sadly, I'm not
- 49:31saying this is just Korea in old days through history, this has
- 49:38not an uncommon occurrence that has happened that like crime
- 49:42scenes weren't taped off, right? People who weren't supposed to
- 49:45be there stepped in and caused contamination.
- 49:49People dropping thing like it's not uncommon this has happened
- 49:53but it's just pure chaos at this crime scene.
- 49:57So I mean, not to say that the acting wasn't good, the
- 50:00cinematography wasn't great, them shooting at night and all
- 50:04of the lights and everything, this crowd of people by the
- 50:07river, it's really impressive, all that top notch.
- 50:11But yeah, the implications of the scene and the way that it
- 50:16hits US maybe as women as maybe it hits US differently, I think.
- 50:22Oh yeah. So I was, I was like.
- 50:24Oh my God. Like.
- 50:24All of them being men. And literally everyone being
- 50:27men. Like it was like over 100.
- 50:30People there, yeah, at least over 100 people.
- 50:33Throngs of men just crowding to take pictures and see that it
- 50:38was like very exhibitionist. I, I was like disturbed by this
- 50:43as well. If I wasn't disturbed by the
- 50:45actual crime, I was disturbed by the crime collection process.
- 50:52After that is when you get that scene of the father and the
- 50:56fiance and him saying, I'm so sorry to the fiance and I can't
- 51:02believe this happened. I've been a cop for 30 years.
- 51:05And I was like, what does that have to do?
- 51:08Like, so you're immune from anything happening to you and
- 51:13your family because you've been a cop for 30 years?
- 51:16But that's the entire idea through the movie that
- 51:18introduced that idea. That's the thing.
- 51:21It was like that was a theme where these men.
- 51:25They have a different kind of arrogance.
- 51:27Yeah, both of them. Then the serial killer, right?
- 51:31It's like I am a secret agent working for the government and
- 51:35you're a cop, veteran of the force for 30 years.
- 51:37And I can't believe my daughter was killed by a serial killer.
- 51:41OK. Like, I guess you should get an
- 51:44award. Like the greatest irony of all
- 51:47time. Like I it was frustrating
- 51:51because the only victim here is the women, the daughter.
- 51:54Exactly, Yeah. Who really?
- 51:57Like, was she supposed to hold up like her father's police
- 52:00badge and be like, no, no, no, wait, my dad's a cop.
- 52:02Like you can't do this. Like, I don't know.
- 52:06Like it was the way that they were acting on the park bench,
- 52:09talking to each other and saying sorry to each other.
- 52:11And I was like, why do you, Why are you saying sorry to each
- 52:13other? What do you all got to be sorry
- 52:16about anyway? It was highly upsetting.
- 52:20And on 2nd watch I was more upset.
- 52:23We go forward in time, everyone is telling Ibn to take off, work
- 52:28to take off, more time to grieve and process.
- 52:30And he's like no, I just need two weeks.
- 52:32The two weeks in question are the rest of the movie.
- 52:35I thought that was funny. I was like, yeah, both times.
- 52:39I'm like, Yep, I just only need two weeks.
- 52:40I'm like I. Just need two weeks right?
- 52:43OK, gave himself a time timeline here. 2 weeks to find out the
- 52:48killer, track down the killer and fuck him up badly.
- 52:53And at this point he doesn't even know anything about this
- 52:57dude other than he killed my fiance.
- 53:01Like doesn't know anything. And yet then you have a secret
- 53:06agent who has all the resources in the world to track this dude
- 53:10down. That is the start of this is not
- 53:13a cat and mouse even playing field thing like at all.
- 53:20Including you have a father-in-law that's a cop for
- 53:2430 plus years who probably has connections in politics.
- 53:28Everything you could possibly think of like that is what the
- 53:30serial killer is up against. There's no way that's a level
- 53:33playing field. The the dad gives him four guys.
- 53:37He's like, these are the top suspects.
- 53:39They've committed crimes like this before.
- 53:41He goes systematically through like 2 guys.
- 53:44I kind of thought that was a little bit funny how he goes
- 53:48through the 1st 2 guys, he blows through them.
- 53:50Right. I thought he would go through
- 53:52all three of the other guys before he got to our no.
- 53:56But he the real serial killer is the.
- 53:57Third guy he never even has to go through the 4th guy but the I
- 54:03think the guy he like crushes his balls or something after
- 54:06he's he. Catches.
- 54:08All these people basically were arrested for sexual crimes.
- 54:11Sexual crimes and murder. Yeah, sexual crimes and murder.
- 54:14So he took his revenge in terms of the sexual part because he
- 54:19probably knows by now that his fiance was not only murdered and
- 54:25cut up, but also sexually assaulted, yes as well.
- 54:30So he brutalizes them. It's actually pretty satisfying
- 54:35to see because once the first, the first guy especially, you
- 54:39don't really see what happens to the second guy that much.
- 54:41He runs him over and then he like, but anyway, the first guy,
- 54:44he catches him macerating to porn, cuts off his porn
- 54:48connection and then he like like starts beating on him and he's
- 54:54questioning him. Like, do you recognize this?
- 54:56And like has photos of the crime scene, right.
- 54:59And he's like, no, like I don't know anything about that.
- 55:03It's kind of funny. Then he beats he takes a wrench
- 55:07and beats his balls. Yep.
- 55:09And I thought, wow, I wonder how many women who have been
- 55:14sexually assaulted would love to do that.
- 55:15But they give it to this, to Ebun to do right.
- 55:20And what's crazy is that when that guy is in the hospital,
- 55:23they're like, why did he turn himself in?
- 55:25He was guilty of like the rape of some other person, the murder
- 55:28of some other lady that they had found in the river.
- 55:31Like it wasn't the right guy, but he had done other shit that
- 55:34he was guilty of. So he turned himself in for the
- 55:37other shit. Mainly because he wanted to get
- 55:39away from the guy. Yeah, he wanted to get away
- 55:41from. He wanted so he was like, OK,
- 55:42jail is more safe than out here I guess.
- 55:44Yes to out here with Eva again. So then we get to EB again,
- 55:50finds the layer of our guy. Yep, which was honestly when I
- 55:56first watched that it was surprising where it was located
- 55:59'cause I didn't think it was be attached to the parents house.
- 56:03I thought it'd be like, I didn't think it would be on the parents
- 56:07property honestly. But that also plays in the fact
- 56:10that this killer was very arrogant because you never see
- 56:14the outside of where this layer is until EBN Young finds it.
- 56:18So I assumed it was like in underground somewhere, like in a
- 56:22cave, because he was in the low, like he was in the middle of
- 56:27nowhere countryside. There could likely be a cave out
- 56:29there, you know, So it's like to have him.
- 56:33You gave him too much credit. I know I did, but it's just like
- 56:37the fact of like it just shows more more how arrogant this dude
- 56:41is between keeping all of his trophies in one place, not even
- 56:47hidden and as well as like literally just have to open his
- 56:50closet door and that's his entrance to the layer, like all
- 56:55within, I don't know, 15 feet of his family.
- 57:00Rude. Yeah.
- 57:01So rude. Yeah.
- 57:03So he finds the ring, his fiance's ring, and all bets are
- 57:08off. Now he's got to track this guy
- 57:11down. I think he inserts the tracker,
- 57:15makes him eat the tracker while he's unconscious because he
- 57:18tracked him down to him about to assault another victim.
- 57:23Well, that's when he does it. In the greenhouse is when he
- 57:26puts. The he like knocks him
- 57:27unconscious and makes him swallow the the tracker, right.
- 57:32And again, here's where I was like, oh, he could just turn him
- 57:34in now. He could just do something.
- 57:37He could just beat him to death now.
- 57:39No, no, no. This is when the cat and mouse
- 57:42starts. Really not, but I mean it.
- 57:45It does. But like it's not a like a pure
- 57:47cat and mouse. It's just a cat playing with his
- 57:49food. OK, but you know, you know what
- 57:51I'm saying like. But yeah, but it also, it's like
- 57:54if he had killed the guy there or turned him in, whatever he
- 57:58was going to do, this is like obvious to state.
- 58:02None of the rest of the movie would have happened.
- 58:04I know. Which means the four or five
- 58:07other people that ended up dying after the scene or being
- 58:10assaulted after the scene would never have happened.
- 58:14So it's like it just goes on to the point of like, this dude
- 58:18doesn't care. Like is not exacting this
- 58:21revenge in terms of his fiancee, let alone the rest of the
- 58:26victims Because yeah, this serial killer goes on insulting
- 58:30women for three more times, Two more times after.
- 58:34This, yeah. Yeah.
- 58:37What was so was there a time that you were like, I can't
- 58:41believe they did this? I would have cut this out.
- 58:45The bathroom scene, like I get why it needed to happen but like
- 58:50I didn't understand why they needed to be violent after that.
- 58:54Like why beat up the store attendant and the pharmacists?
- 58:59Like that part of it, like the I didn't understand that.
- 59:02Like I understood why it needed to happen.
- 59:04He needed to find the tracker. But like, I think that scene
- 59:07could have played out very differently than how it did.
- 59:13Was was that the time when he almost like sexually assaults
- 59:18the nurse or? Was that No, that was the
- 59:20second. So he went into the hospital as
- 59:23to get patched up and that's when he did the nurse and then
- 59:27that's when he be on took his Achilles heel out.
- 59:31Yes, Oh God. But then and then he let him go
- 59:36again after that. So this dude made this nurse do
- 59:40a sexual act on him, let him go again after that.
- 59:45And then he realized because this guy kept finding him.
- 59:49So then we had the wooden house. Happened with the guy who ate
- 59:52the flesh. Well, OK, so let's pause here
- 59:55because we have to talk about the cannibal that's in this
- 59:59movie. That I find it hilarious what?
- 1:00:02The one thing I found funny is like this dude just had a string
- 1:00:06of killers that he knew. Found.
- 1:00:09And he found and then he let you.
- 1:00:11Then he led the special Asian dude to them.
- 1:00:14So this special Asian dude just haunted down all these serial
- 1:00:18killers the entire movie even though it wasn't like he was
- 1:00:20only hunting 1. But you're right, he was
- 1:00:23tracking 1 serial killer and it led him to TE Moussong who ended
- 1:00:29up being a cannibal and was eating raw human flesh out here
- 1:00:35in the woods with his live in girlfriend.
- 1:00:39And his victims in the basement. Victims in the basement.
- 1:00:42And this is, I'm sorry, I have crazy eyes right now.
- 1:00:45Like this is the part of the movie where I was like, whoa, I
- 1:00:47thought this was crazy. This just went into another
- 1:00:50stratosphere because honestly didn't expect that.
- 1:00:54Did not expect that, No. And that's kind of when you get
- 1:00:58the the the serial killer gets the idea that he's being tracked
- 1:01:01somehow because the cannibal guy explains.
- 1:01:05I was like, no, dude, this dude, you're his prey.
- 1:01:08Like, he is coming after you. He is not letting go.
- 1:01:12You are arrogant and you are confident in this.
- 1:01:14I'm telling you right now, you are going to lose, like, no
- 1:01:17matter what. Yeah, And I find it hilarious.
- 1:01:22Like he said, he said, He said he was laughing like he was
- 1:01:26like, I'm laughing because this is hilarious.
- 1:01:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:01:30Tamusung. Oh my God, Like the whole thing,
- 1:01:33honestly, if you think this movie stops at a certain point
- 1:01:37and it can't get any worse, it just keeps blowing past the stop
- 1:01:41signs. And the Tamusung character, the
- 1:01:45whole takedown of that cannibalism operation that was
- 1:01:49happening in the woods. Again, EBO Gun doesn't do this
- 1:01:53out of like, any moral obligation to save the victims
- 1:01:59that are in there. Or yeah, I should definitely be
- 1:02:03taking out a cannibal hiding in the woods.
- 1:02:08No, he's doing this to get to his quarry, to get to
- 1:02:13Chimanzeeks. Like one of my favorite scenes
- 1:02:16was right before this, when he before he got to the cannibal's
- 1:02:19house was when he was in that cab.
- 1:02:22Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which again, how does he keep
- 1:02:25meeting all of these crazy people out here?
- 1:02:28That killing. People 2 killers like a guy in a
- 1:02:31two guys, one guy drives a cab, picks up unknowing visitors or
- 1:02:36like patrons and there's a guy in the back and they two team
- 1:02:39them and of course they pick up this dude thinking he's easy
- 1:02:42prey because he's already injured.
- 1:02:44The reason why I like this scene though is how they shot it
- 1:02:48because it's just a camera spinning around the car the
- 1:02:53entire time to show. Cause eventually the car gets in
- 1:02:56an accident because literally the serial killer guy just goes
- 1:02:59ham on both of them and grabs a knife out of his sleeve and just
- 1:03:03goes just takes him out like stabbing everywhere.
- 1:03:08And it's just the camera going around and around and around and
- 1:03:12eventually they crash into a tree and then he ends up at a
- 1:03:14cannibal's house. That's the reason why I like the
- 1:03:17scene is just the camera work, not necessarily him killing the
- 1:03:20dude. Guys, I just can't believe we're
- 1:03:24talking. It sounds like we're crazy
- 1:03:26people, but the chain of events is He almost rapes this teenager
- 1:03:29in a greenhouse. EB Young Gun takes him out,
- 1:03:33knocks him unconscious and inserts the tracker.
- 1:03:37Then he gets up, meets the two serial killer killers that are
- 1:03:41in the taxi running this scam. No, no, he goes to the pharmacy
- 1:03:451st. Oh, that's when he goes.
- 1:03:47He goes to the hospital first 'cause he tries to get his
- 1:03:50injuries assessed and then he assaults the nurse and then the
- 1:03:55special agent guy shows up again.
- 1:03:58He's like what the fuck are you doing here?
- 1:04:00Like what the hell? And then he patches him up again
- 1:04:05and leaves him unconscious in the car to again chase him.
- 1:04:10And so then the guy goes and picks up this taxi who he kills
- 1:04:14again. And then he steals like their
- 1:04:18clothes and whatever to get out of his clothes.
- 1:04:20And then he walks or drives the taxi to the cannibals house and
- 1:04:26a special Asian guy shows up again and he's like what the
- 1:04:29hell, Like what the heck. Anyways, so we'll just skip to
- 1:04:36the end of the movie where it's the jig is up.
- 1:04:40Like the serial killer knows that he's being tracked.
- 1:04:45He shits the tracker out and plants it on somebody else.
- 1:04:49Right. He's free to go.
- 1:04:51He figures out why, which victim this guy is mad about.
- 1:04:58Yeah. And he goes to the 30 year
- 1:05:00veteran chief's house, the the first victim, the fiance's
- 1:05:04father, he goes to that house. And this is when I was like, OK,
- 1:05:09no, no, no, no, no, no, 'cause this whole cat and mouse, like
- 1:05:14he had the opportunity, even when he had the opportunity to
- 1:05:16take him down and kill him or torture him so many times,
- 1:05:20right? Yeah.
- 1:05:22And instead, he let this guy go. And now he's terrorizing
- 1:05:25everybody around him and innocent people that had nothing
- 1:05:30to do with the fiance or anything at all.
- 1:05:34And he goes to the fiance's house and kills the younger
- 1:05:39sister and almost puts the father in a body bag.
- 1:05:43Yeah, yeah. Not only does he kill the
- 1:05:45younger sister, he kidnaps the younger sister 1st and kills her
- 1:05:50later. So then the family has to deal
- 1:05:52with the fact that she might have been alive for a period of
- 1:05:56time and then find her later. And it's like, this is what
- 1:05:59we're talking about with the bench conversation is like dude,
- 1:06:03what did you think was going to happen after you kept letting
- 1:06:06him go? He was going to get his revenge
- 1:06:09somehow. Right, he thought he could
- 1:06:11control the. Situation exactly one of my
- 1:06:14favorite scenes too in this movie is the special Asian dude
- 1:06:18showing up at the house and like plowing through the cops to get
- 1:06:21to the front door. I'm like, dude, don't act, don't
- 1:06:26act like all remorseful now. Like don't act sad now.
- 1:06:31Like you're going to be grieving if you find out your
- 1:06:34father-in-law soon to be father-in-law was dead in the
- 1:06:37kitchen. Like he took out like 15 cops
- 1:06:41trying to get to this front door.
- 1:06:43And it's just like, and no one knew what he was, who he was.
- 1:06:46Like the cops he was plowing through had no idea who this who
- 1:06:48he was. It wasn't until he got to the
- 1:06:50front door that he actually met a cop that knew who he was.
- 1:06:55But it's just like, I just, I couldn't feel you can't or you
- 1:06:59can't feel sympathy for this. I find it really hard to feel
- 1:07:03sympathy for this secret agent at a point in this movie because
- 1:07:09half of the movie was caused due to him being arrogant that
- 1:07:13nothing would happen to him and his family when he started on
- 1:07:17this revenge path. And then you get to this scene
- 1:07:20where the like his actions met consequences and I could not
- 1:07:26feel sympathy for the guy. I was like, dude, you let this
- 1:07:30dude go three times and tortured him and did all this stuff.
- 1:07:36This happened because of that. Like if you didn't kill him the
- 1:07:40first time or lock him up somewhere and I don't know, slow
- 1:07:44torture him like you should have, this wouldn't have
- 1:07:48happened. And the same with the cop guy.
- 1:07:50Like the cop guy, like this the sister was telling them stop
- 1:07:55this. Like this is not going to bring
- 1:07:57her back. This is not going to do
- 1:07:58anything. Sanctioned by the dad.
- 1:08:01Yeah, the dad helped out, Yeah. And now he has to live with the
- 1:08:04consequences that his other daughter also died, he lost
- 1:08:08because of. His daughters to the same serial
- 1:08:11killer exactly for being a shithead.
- 1:08:14Yeah, lucky with the sister we didn't see anything, but it
- 1:08:17wasn't as brutal as like. But that wasn't the point.
- 1:08:21No, that wasn't the point. That wasn't the point.
- 1:08:26She was still taken and kidnapped and Oh my God, it was
- 1:08:30this whole fucking thing. So the ending again, this is
- 1:08:34like a culmination of all of the terrible, no good dirty acts
- 1:08:41that each of them has done has culminated into even when sets
- 1:08:45up this saw like contraption. Well, First off, another one of
- 1:08:50my favorite scenes is when. Oh yeah, sure, the serial
- 1:08:54killer. Was in the middle of the street
- 1:08:56because eventually he killed his sister.
- 1:08:58Oh, the cops. The cops.
- 1:09:00Being so incompetent. Yeah, which is a Tropic crime
- 1:09:04stuff, but the sister so the sister gets killed and the
- 1:09:09serial killer basically is like OK, I basically exacted my
- 1:09:13revenge. I'm ready to turn myself in,
- 1:09:16quote UN quote, turn myself in. He's covered head and toe in
- 1:09:20blood. Like, just covered.
- 1:09:22Yeah, in a cop car. Like he drove a cop car to the
- 1:09:26middle of the street, a busy St. and is standing there waving a
- 1:09:30knife waiting for the cops to come and arrest him.
- 1:09:34And I'm the entire time I'm like, OK, dude, you just killed
- 1:09:39this dude's sister-in-law and brutally beat his father-in-law.
- 1:09:45Why do you not think this dude is still going to hunt you down?
- 1:09:48Like he also was extremely arrogant the entire movie, but
- 1:09:52he also was egging him on at this point.
- 1:09:55Yes. And so one of my favorite scenes
- 1:09:58is this secret agent just like opening his driver side door,
- 1:10:02putting, putting it into a wall. So the drop the door comes off
- 1:10:07just driving at this man in the street, makes AUE, grabs the
- 1:10:12guy, pulls him on his lap and drives away with his feet
- 1:10:15hanging out the door. And the cops are like, what the
- 1:10:19heck just happened? Oh my God.
- 1:10:25And yeah, the cops were extremely slow.
- 1:10:26Like they didn't want to move in for some reason.
- 1:10:29I don't really know what happened.
- 1:10:30Because Oh my God, a knife. Oh my God.
- 1:10:33A serial killer waving a knife. Yeah, babes.
- 1:10:38Yeah, so the secret Asian guy kidnaps a dude and basically the
- 1:10:43leads to the very last standoff at the end of the movie where he
- 1:10:48slowly tortures the man. Yeah, he puts him in this giant
- 1:10:52saw like contraption that he like puts something in his mouth
- 1:10:58so that if he lets it go it'll guillotine his head off.
- 1:11:02Yeah, which was his own contraption.
- 1:11:04The serial killer built it. He took him back to his own lair
- 1:11:06and put him in his own contraption, and then he tied.
- 1:11:11So we put one end of this rope in the dude's mouth.
- 1:11:15He tied the other end to the door.
- 1:11:17Called his family up. Called his family up saying like
- 1:11:20hey want to come over for dinner or something.
- 1:11:22I can't remember what he said. And apparently, the only sense
- 1:11:27of shame that the serial killer had was toward his family.
- 1:11:31Yeah. Who was?
- 1:11:33I guess he was non contact. With Right, Yeah, 'cause the
- 1:11:37grandfather's grandparents were raising his son, apparently,
- 1:11:41yes. So he was not.
- 1:11:44He was. It was like finally getting him
- 1:11:46where it hurt. Yeah.
- 1:11:49And of course, the serial killer, when his family shows
- 1:11:51up, the serial killer who's stuck in this contraption, he's
- 1:11:54screaming for his family to leave as best as he can with
- 1:11:57that like gag thing that he has in his mouth that's he's holding
- 1:12:00on to for dear life, biting down on so that he doesn't get
- 1:12:03guillotine to death. Yeah, because if they open the
- 1:12:06door, it will release the guillotine and chop his head
- 1:12:10off. And he can't get away because
- 1:12:12he's tied out. Like he can't run, he can't get
- 1:12:15out. He cannot escape.
- 1:12:17There's no escaping this. The family does manage to open
- 1:12:20the door and that triggers the guillotine and his son and his
- 1:12:26parents witness him get decapitated by his own machine
- 1:12:32contraption in his lair. Yeah, while the secret agent is
- 1:12:37just walking down the street laughing and crying and that's
- 1:12:41the end of the movie. And he like left the the sound
- 1:12:45thing. He left the tracker in the room
- 1:12:50so he could hear everything this dude was saying and pleading for
- 1:12:55his family to not open the door and then hear the guillotine
- 1:12:58like hit his neck and everything.
- 1:13:01And the reaction afterwards, like he heard everything as he
- 1:13:04walked down the street. Yeah, so it was reprehensible
- 1:13:08and startling. I think the movie is supposed to
- 1:13:13leave you extremely rattled, but it is open to interpretation.
- 1:13:20The title, what does it mean? Who is the devil?
- 1:13:24What does the end scene mean to you?
- 1:13:26What does the end scene mean to you?
- 1:13:28It is all open to interpretation.
- 1:13:30There are no wrong answers. It will leave you feeling very
- 1:13:33icky. Obviously there was trouble
- 1:13:36getting this even to screen because of how gory and violent
- 1:13:41it is. Yeah.
- 1:13:43But that is the end of the movie, and I don't obviously to
- 1:13:46have no notes. I've just been flying by the sea
- 1:13:47of my pants here. Caitlin, is there anything else
- 1:13:50you'd like to say about I Saw the Devil.
- 1:13:52I did feel a little bit of Satan in this movie.
- 1:13:55It was so, so much. There is so much in this.
- 1:14:01Movie, yeah, it's brutal. And I mean, like, as I was
- 1:14:05saying, there are a couple of scenes in this movie I even
- 1:14:08cringed at like, the Achilles tendon cutting in the Doctor's
- 1:14:12office. I was like, oh, OK.
- 1:14:14And then in the last scene, the screwdriver to the cheek, I was
- 1:14:20not expecting that. So when that happened, I was
- 1:14:22like, oh, my God. Because you see it, You see it.
- 1:14:26Those are like the two scenes that like, I really cringed at
- 1:14:30because I was like, OK, I mean, they made it believable.
- 1:14:34Whatever they did, those special effects, they made it believable
- 1:14:37and they gross. Yeah, it was.
- 1:14:41It was bad. It was really bad.
- 1:14:44So yeah, this is a brutal movie. It's a lot of pain, a lot of
- 1:14:49mania, a lot of obsession, and there's nothing really simple
- 1:14:53about it. Yeah.
- 1:14:54But one of the things like I found really ironic, which I
- 1:14:59would like your take on is so at one point when the sister was
- 1:15:03like trying to convince him to not do it anymore and she was on
- 1:15:06the phone and she said the line revenge is for the movies and
- 1:15:13then she ends up being part of a revenge plot.
- 1:15:15I just found that sad. I found that really sad because.
- 1:15:19She also says that none of this will bring her sister back.
- 1:15:22Yeah, yeah. Which is a classic line that you
- 1:15:25hear in a lot of. Exactly.
- 1:15:27Crime movies especially, or where something happens to
- 1:15:30somebody and then someone's on a vengeance kick, it is very sad.
- 1:15:35I don't think I expected her to be part of anything.
- 1:15:41No, absolutely no, Not at all. She had such a small role and I
- 1:15:46don't think she was part of the plan.
- 1:15:49Like she came home during the. She just happened there.
- 1:15:53She just happened to walk in there.
- 1:15:55Yeah, yeah. That just goes to show the
- 1:15:57impulsive nature of the serial killer and the cruel twist of
- 1:16:05fate, Destiny, Inyon, whatever you want to call it in this
- 1:16:09movie where of course the other female in the family gets fucked
- 1:16:15over. Right.
- 1:16:17I mean, if there was no sense of catharsis, there was no peace at
- 1:16:21the end of this movie. None of this brought any healing
- 1:16:26at all to any. Character whatsoever.
- 1:16:29Well, even the other victims too.
- 1:16:31It's like these. When he opened the trophy boxes
- 1:16:36and you saw how many people, how many trophies was in that, it's
- 1:16:41like, OK, you killed this guy in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:16:46His family has no idea who did it, has no idea.
- 1:16:51Like he was this type of person. So he they might find out after
- 1:16:55finding him, but it's like you're not even getting justice
- 1:17:00or providing that closure for any of the other victims
- 1:17:04families who might not even know where their daughter is.
- 1:17:11Like it's just or even the ones who were still alive, like the
- 1:17:15nurse and the student. That's what I was, yeah.
- 1:17:18Didn't end up dead and so they have to deal with that for the
- 1:17:23rest of their life. With that trauma and even the
- 1:17:26stigma of, of because in Korea there's a horrible stigma, I
- 1:17:29mean, everywhere, I would say, of sexual assault victims.
- 1:17:33And it's so difficult for people to speak up about their
- 1:17:38experiences and get justice. And not to mention the justice
- 1:17:42system for sexual assault and rape victims in Korea being so
- 1:17:46egregious and the punishments being so LAX and the burden of
- 1:17:51proof being so high. It is unbelievable how the males
- 1:17:58in the movie just run through every female like nothing.
- 1:18:03Exactly. Yeah.
- 1:18:04And that's the ironic thing. Like so from a coming from a
- 1:18:08serial killer, you expect that because he doesn't see them as
- 1:18:14human. He sees them as property.
- 1:18:17He sees them as things, as meat. Like that is the perspective you
- 1:18:21expect from him. You don't expect it from the
- 1:18:26agent or the father until it happens.
- 1:18:29And then you're like, OK, who's the better person here in this
- 1:18:33movie? Right, there are no Is the hero
- 1:18:38a real hero? Yeah, there's no good people in
- 1:18:40this movie. No, no, it's just the whole of
- 1:18:45the movie, the act of the vengeance and the the whole
- 1:18:48revenge. It just tarnishes Ebengen's
- 1:18:51character irrevocably. Yeah.
- 1:18:53How scary do you think this movie is?
- 1:18:56It's shocking. I mean, it is scary other than,
- 1:18:59I mean, there was not that many jump scares other than the first
- 1:19:02one, Yeah, of her turning on the high beams and he's right there.
- 1:19:06Yeah. There's not traditional jump
- 1:19:09scares in the movie, but I think the content of it.
- 1:19:12Is I think it's scary. It's deemed scary because it
- 1:19:17could happen in real life, right?
- 1:19:20Like it, it could happen. Like something like this could
- 1:19:23happen. And I think that's what makes it
- 1:19:26scary to some people. Serial killers in general.
- 1:19:29That's what is scary. To people, yeah, there's an
- 1:19:33element of this is based on a true crime.
- 1:19:37Yeah. It is well documented,
- 1:19:40especially if you start down the rabbit hole of Korean true
- 1:19:45crime. Well documented how the police
- 1:19:49fuck up every single investigation.
- 1:19:51Yeah. So this movie can transcend
- 1:19:56torture porn and can transcend just being a grizzly horror
- 1:20:00movie. And that's why I think it's
- 1:20:03difficult to just sleep well at night after watching it because
- 1:20:08there's an element of truth to it, right?
- 1:20:11And there's an element of men just don't like, they fucking
- 1:20:17hate women like they're, of course.
- 1:20:20The undercurrent of misogyny in the movie?
- 1:20:24Deeply unsettling. And it's real, right?
- 1:20:26Yeah. In the real world.
- 1:20:28In the real world, yeah. So a lot of elements of it will
- 1:20:34not let you sleep well at night. No, not at all, and will make
- 1:20:38you very uncomfortable when you're actually watching the
- 1:20:40movie. Yeah.
- 1:20:41Yes, so happy Halloween everybody.
- 1:20:45And we with that, we are basically done with spooky
- 1:20:51season 2024. Oh God.
- 1:20:55So thank you so much for going on this really scary journey
