- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to a DM podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We'll try to keep it as nice as we can,
- 0:05Speaker 2: but you might hear the occasional swear word in No Dribble.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Don't tell them hello, and welcome to No Dribble.
- 0:22Speaker 2: My name is Carolyn Swindell. I'm a comedian and writer,
- 0:25Speaker 2: and I'm joined by two women who need no introduction,
- 0:27Speaker 2: but hell, I'm going.
- 0:28Speaker 4: To introduce them anyway.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Two women who have represented Australia in Netbull two hundred
- 0:33Speaker 2: and thirty times, and if you add my caps in,
- 0:35Speaker 2: that takes us to a total of two hundred and thirty.
- 0:38Speaker 2: That's not all there is to these talented women. Liz
- 0:41Speaker 2: Ellis can reverse a caravan into a camping space, can
- 0:45Speaker 2: put an id tag into a cowsier, and makes excellent
- 0:48Speaker 2: roast potatoes.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Wow.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Cat Cox, I'm advised, has the most organized wardrobe in
- 0:53Speaker 2: the Southern Hemisphere possibly globally, makes outstanding banana bread that
- 0:58Speaker 2: one I can attest to, and has the worldly.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Ability to keep white clothes white.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Multi talented, there's more to these world champions than just netball,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and there is more to No Dribble than just netball.
- 1:09Speaker 4: It's about netball, and it's about women's sport.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It's about juggling kids and life and friendship and behind
- 1:15Speaker 2: the scenes on tour. You don't need to have ever
- 1:17Speaker 2: donned a bib to enjoy this podcast. It's for everyone.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But why am I holding up the fun? Let's get
- 1:21Speaker 2: into it.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Hello Lizellis, Hello Carolyn Swindle.
- 1:25Speaker 4: And Hello cat Cox. Hello afternoon.
- 1:29Speaker 5: What time is it?
- 1:30Speaker 1: I know, do you know when you're talking about how
- 1:32Speaker 1: organized Coxy's wardrobe is, I don't know if you can
- 1:35Speaker 1: see behind me.
- 1:36Speaker 6: Yeah, I've got a tick looking at that.
- 1:38Speaker 1: My office is a bonfight and every time I know
- 1:41Speaker 1: that Catherine's going to be looking, I feel like I
- 1:43Speaker 1: need to be doing this social codes.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I hasn't Zoom trained you the last few years of
- 1:47Speaker 2: Zoom meetings training that you just need to have that
- 1:49Speaker 2: bit of your house tidy.
- 1:50Speaker 5: I know, and normally I would, but as a bit
- 1:52Speaker 5: of it, you.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Know what will happen to People will take a screenshot
- 1:55Speaker 6: of this and they will zoom in to see what's
- 1:57Speaker 6: in the background. Somebody came at me the other day.
- 2:00Speaker 6: I Harper posted a photo and she didn't. She took
- 2:02Speaker 6: the photo of me in the car and the music
- 2:05Speaker 6: was playing and somebody had screenshot at the photo and
- 2:08Speaker 6: zoomed in to see what music I was listening to
- 2:09Speaker 6: and then made comment about it.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Get a life, people, that's weird, isn't it.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Wow, Well, if you zoom in there, that's an honorary
- 2:16Speaker 1: doctor might there's a few, but whereas if you zoom
- 2:21Speaker 1: in here, it's all mess and it's an Asos purchase
- 2:24Speaker 1: that I haven't returned. So you know, at the purchase
- 2:28Speaker 1: too small. I was a bit I was a bit
- 2:31Speaker 1: optimistic about how big my butt was.
- 2:33Speaker 6: Standard big bitch problem.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Hey yeah, it's more like standard metapause problem when you
- 2:38Speaker 1: get a fat belt. Randy guts to bus. Anyway, that's
- 2:41Speaker 1: just a whole nother conversation.
- 2:42Speaker 2: But I like that you're sharing it with us, Liz,
- 2:44Speaker 2: your background. I hate it when people do that blurring
- 2:47Speaker 2: out the background thing. I just want to know where
- 2:49Speaker 2: are you. You're a sticky peek, absolutely, and I get
- 2:52Speaker 2: really bored in meetings, so I was like, what do
- 2:54Speaker 2: you got.
- 2:54Speaker 6: That, ladies? How about the disaster? Should we call it
- 3:00Speaker 6: a shit show that happened at the netball on the weekend?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Yasco, A debacle, all the words, shambles, amazing.
- 3:06Speaker 6: Yes, so we have to talk about that in depth.
- 3:08Speaker 6: We won't do it just now, though, because I'm more
- 3:10Speaker 6: intrigued about Lisa's Asalt's purchase and day and whatever.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Happy Mother's Day, everybody. I've been a very dutiful daughter.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Recently.
- 3:18Speaker 2: My mother lives in New Zealand and it was Margaret's birthday.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Interesting fact about No Dribble. Two out of three No
- 3:24Speaker 2: Dribble hosts have a mother named.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Margaret, so France is letting the side down.
- 3:28Speaker 2: But I went over to New Zealand to see my
- 3:29Speaker 2: mum and I went over her birthday, and I flew
- 3:31Speaker 2: back on a Friday afternoon and my flight was delayed
- 3:34Speaker 2: and I was in the Corners club and I had
- 3:36Speaker 2: lots of work to do, so I got a ginger ale,
- 3:38Speaker 2: which I thought was very restrained of me, and I
- 3:41Speaker 2: did some work and then we had a delay, then
- 3:43Speaker 2: another delay, so I thought, look, I'll have a glass
- 3:45Speaker 2: of wine. And while I was out in the normal
- 3:47Speaker 2: part of the airport, I saw a pair of earrings
- 3:49Speaker 2: at the museum shop there and I thought, no, I'm
- 3:53Speaker 2: not going to buy them.
- 3:54Speaker 4: I own too much.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I've got this whole thing about stuff going on at
- 3:57Speaker 2: the moment, so I didn't buy them. But then as
- 3:59Speaker 2: soon as I got into the and had that glass
- 4:00Speaker 2: of wine, I thought I should have bought those earrings.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So I got online and I found the manufacturer, and
- 4:07Speaker 2: I bought.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Three pairs of ear.
- 4:10Speaker 6: How many wines deep?
- 4:11Speaker 4: That was only sort of a glass and a half in.
- 4:14Speaker 2: By the time I got out of the lounge, I'd
- 4:15Speaker 2: had two three glasses and there was a woman standing
- 4:18Speaker 2: in front of me waiting to go, and I thought,
- 4:19Speaker 2: that's a nice bag, so I asked her where she
- 4:21Speaker 2: got it from. So I then bought that bag subsequently
- 4:23Speaker 2: while we were waiting on the tarmac, and then I
- 4:26Speaker 2: cried in the safety briefing. So there's something deeply wrong
- 4:30Speaker 2: with me?
- 4:31Speaker 6: Well, were you that?
- 4:32Speaker 4: Which is why we love you?
- 4:34Speaker 6: Wow?
- 4:35Speaker 1: Do you need like a little breathalyzer on your laptop
- 4:37Speaker 1: so that you know once you're over point let's face
- 4:41Speaker 1: at point zero one, no purchase like your credit.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Card part gets shut off.
- 4:45Speaker 6: I would miss that so much richer if I had
- 4:48Speaker 6: that this Why is it that you think it's a
- 4:50Speaker 6: good thing too? After a long lunch, when you're in
- 4:52Speaker 6: the CBD and you're walking past designer shops that you
- 4:55Speaker 6: should buy a Gucci dog tag.
- 4:57Speaker 5: You don't have a dog.
- 4:58Speaker 6: No, it's like ah, like on a neck, like you know,
- 5:00Speaker 6: the army.
- 5:03Speaker 5: That's how little I know about fashion.
- 5:05Speaker 6: That's four hundred dollars that I've worn maybe one time.
- 5:07Speaker 6: You know.
- 5:07Speaker 2: They're designed to identify corpses of what maybe I should
- 5:11Speaker 2: die a battle, just in case, in case some ship
- 5:15Speaker 2: goes down in the city next time, oh.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Dear, or you know, like if you expand it out, Catherine.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I have been at each other's company when we've had
- 5:22Speaker 1: one or two, maybe more ones than we should have,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and we've ended up at a tattoo parlor.
- 5:27Speaker 6: Yes, now, I think we've done that a few times actually,
- 5:31Speaker 6: because when you got one, I didn't that one time,
- 5:33Speaker 6: and then there was another time that I thought i'd
- 5:35Speaker 6: get one, and for whatever reason, thought it would be
- 5:37Speaker 6: a good idea to get my surname on my wrist
- 5:40Speaker 6: and went to sleep with my head on my hand
- 5:45Speaker 6: and woke up in the morning and saw it and
- 5:46Speaker 6: just went, oh, oh, terrific, that's great.
- 5:52Speaker 1: That though, that was that's my husband, Matthew's folk, because
- 5:55Speaker 1: he picked us up from from Manly where we'd been
- 5:59Speaker 1: and instead of taking us home and telling us to.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Go to bed.
- 6:02Speaker 1: He acquiesced to our requests to go to the tattoo parlor,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and he sort of talked me out of it.
- 6:09Speaker 5: But Catherine, I think he egged you on.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Of course he did.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Was that when you got your first tattoo, Lisz, because
- 6:14Speaker 2: I think I met you immediately after that, because we
- 6:17Speaker 2: were outing mare E on that Lizella's Girl's Sport tour
- 6:21Speaker 2: and you couldn't go in the hot the mineral bar
- 6:25Speaker 2: thing because you had a tattoo, and you didn't want
- 6:27Speaker 2: your parents to know.
- 6:29Speaker 1: No, no, they knew, right, I mean, oh my god,
- 6:31Speaker 1: I was in my thirties by this point and they knew.
- 6:34Speaker 5: But my mum, when I got.
- 6:36Speaker 1: My tattoo, it's a tiny little lizard on my back.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You can't see it, and I've been thinking about it
- 6:41Speaker 1: for a while. It wasn't like I had too many wines.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And then went yeah, I had actually had a design
- 6:46Speaker 1: and been thinking about it for a while. And I
- 6:47Speaker 1: told my mom and she's like, you know, they're permanent.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I reckon, I've got a good idea. So she was
- 6:53Speaker 1: really annoyed. But then on that trip, because Mum and
- 6:56Speaker 1: Dad came as a geest. You ays, remember on that
- 6:58Speaker 1: trip she had the panther and she was really careful
- 7:01Speaker 1: about Liz, come and put it on. We're going to
- 7:03Speaker 1: make sure it's okay. I didn't like it, but she
- 7:06Speaker 1: didn't want it to sort of leech and be all horrible.
- 7:08Speaker 5: God love it. So yes, that's right. That's when we met.
- 7:11Speaker 1: When I couldn't get into the barths at Mauree because
- 7:13Speaker 1: I had a freshly minted lizard tattoo on my back.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So since that time, I've been trying to work out
- 7:19Speaker 2: what tattoo to get. I don't have a tattoo because
- 7:21Speaker 2: I can't work out something that I know.
- 7:23Speaker 4: I'm going to lie. And I would say a bit
- 7:24Speaker 4: of life advice.
- 7:25Speaker 2: If you've ever permed your hair, maybe you shouldn't decide
- 7:29Speaker 2: on a tattoo because you have poor judgment. And I
- 7:32Speaker 2: have permed my hair when it was quite long.
- 7:34Speaker 4: That was terrible. Then I got an asymmetric or cut.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So that's why I just think, how can I be
- 7:39Speaker 2: trusted to choose something to have on my body forever?
- 7:41Speaker 6: Yeah, but wait, there's a flaw in your system here.
- 7:43Speaker 6: We're all children of the eighties. Didn't like ninety nine
- 7:46Speaker 6: point nine percent of us have a PERM.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it doesn't make it right, Cath, but we were
- 7:51Speaker 4: trying it a PERM.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I mean, I've tried to destroy every photo of me
- 7:56Speaker 1: with a PERM, but I reckon I might have. I'll
- 7:58Speaker 1: send it to you, Catherine, to put up on the
- 8:00Speaker 1: graund Please do of us with perps. I've seen photos
- 8:03Speaker 1: of Caroline with the PERP.
- 8:04Speaker 2: So, Kathy, you've got your your name tattooed on the
- 8:08Speaker 2: inside of your wrist, you have dog tags. Are you
- 8:10Speaker 2: worried that you just like go missing sometimes and people
- 8:13Speaker 2: need to find help.
- 8:14Speaker 4: You find your way home?
- 8:14Speaker 6: But how helpful is that? You're welcome whoever finds me
- 8:18Speaker 6: lying in together? Can we take you back to your story?
- 8:21Speaker 6: There's a couple of things I want to unpack. Firstly,
- 8:24Speaker 6: ginger ale. Yeah, why ginger ole?
- 8:27Speaker 2: I just hadn't had it in ages, and I saw
- 8:28Speaker 2: it there and I thought I'll have a ginger ole
- 8:30Speaker 2: and it was delicious.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Yeah, that'd be the last one I used. Now, more importantly,
- 8:33Speaker 6: what brought you to tears? In the safety briefing one
- 8:35Speaker 6: would have?
- 8:36Speaker 4: It's terrible.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I've been programmed over the years that Buddy still call
- 8:39Speaker 2: Australia Home song that they use in the Quanti Sad
- 8:41Speaker 2: and now using in the safety briefings, and it's like, ah,
- 8:44Speaker 2: Pavlov's Dogs, I should cry?
- 8:46Speaker 6: Was it the wine and juice tears?
- 8:47Speaker 4: Do you think?
- 8:47Speaker 6: Oh?
- 8:47Speaker 4: I'm definitely, most definitely.
- 8:49Speaker 6: We don't need to worry about you too much a
- 8:51Speaker 6: little bit.
- 8:55Speaker 5: It was Mother's Day on the weekend.
- 8:57Speaker 6: Happy Mother's Day.
- 8:58Speaker 5: I haven't spent.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Mother stay at home for a number of years because
- 9:01Speaker 1: I've always been traveling with work. But this year we're
- 9:03Speaker 1: at home and Austin, the school that he goes to,
- 9:06Speaker 1: they have the Mother's Day Store so the kids can
- 9:08Speaker 1: bring in five bucks and purchase a president.
- 9:10Speaker 5: And he was so excited. He was actually so excited that.
- 9:13Speaker 1: He insisted, I've given me my Mother's Day present on Saturday,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and I wonder if you guys have ever got presents.
- 9:18Speaker 5: That you've looked at and gone.
- 9:19Speaker 1: So I opened it up and he'd bought me a
- 9:22Speaker 1: little massager and I turned it on and it looks remarkably.
- 9:31Speaker 6: A store, second hand store.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It's well, I think, well it's brand new, because it
- 9:37Speaker 1: was sort of all wrapped up in plastic. But I
- 9:39Speaker 1: was like, this is more than a massager.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Five bucks. That's pretty good.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I know. It's like, Oh, I said to my husband,
- 9:45Speaker 5: I'll be putting this in my bag next time I
- 9:47Speaker 5: go away.
- 9:48Speaker 6: Carefully, you don't burn anything off with that. Though that
- 9:50Speaker 6: sounds a little dodgy for five dollars.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I'm a little bit worried that if you
- 9:54Speaker 1: plugged it in, I won't plug it any news.
- 9:56Speaker 4: At the same time, did Austin tell you what he
- 9:59Speaker 4: thought it was?
- 10:01Speaker 1: He thought, it's like it says on the box, it's
- 10:04Speaker 1: a massage. It's a personal message.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Personal massage. That's hysterical. I get candles and honey and
- 10:12Speaker 6: stuff like that from the stall. It comes from some country,
- 10:15Speaker 6: little market thing Lardi darl candles can one person have?
- 10:21Speaker 6: Though every year Harper buys me candles for Birthday, Christmas,
- 10:25Speaker 6: Mother's Day, whatever it is. I've got them all stored
- 10:27Speaker 6: under the bed. If there's a fire, we're going up.
- 10:32Speaker 5: You get a long burn from it. Though.
- 10:33Speaker 6: We had a Mother's Day mass at school on the Friday.
- 10:37Speaker 6: That's an hour of my life I won't get back.
- 10:39Speaker 6: So at the end of the mass, they had a
- 10:41Speaker 6: big screen with videos and They had kids from kindy
- 10:44Speaker 6: through the year twelve talking about what their mothers taught
- 10:47Speaker 6: them and you know, blah blah blah, all these wonderful things.
- 10:50Speaker 6: So the first three kids, my mom taught me to
- 10:52Speaker 6: show respect, and my mom taught me resilience, and it's
- 10:55Speaker 6: made me this kind of person. The next minute, Harper's
- 10:57Speaker 6: face pops up on this big screen and I'm thinking,
- 11:00Speaker 6: oh my gosh, what's about to come out of My
- 11:02Speaker 6: mum's taught me how to make rollies in less than
- 11:04Speaker 6: a minute.
- 11:06Speaker 1: My mum's taught me that when you need a tat,
- 11:08Speaker 1: she'll take me exactly.
- 11:10Speaker 6: That's what was going through my head. She says, I'm
- 11:13Speaker 6: an awesome netballer because my mumm is ah no, But
- 11:18Speaker 6: is that a parenting fail or not? Because she was
- 11:20Speaker 6: sitting behind me and I turned around and she's pissing
- 11:23Speaker 6: herself laughing. But I thought, all these other kids are
- 11:26Speaker 6: talking about, you know, respect and resilience, and my mum
- 11:29Speaker 6: taught me to be courageous. And then she's like, I'm
- 11:31Speaker 6: an awesome netballer.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I reckon if she was twelve, it's problematic, but she's
- 11:36Speaker 2: she's little, Okay, it's okay.
- 11:37Speaker 6: I can take that with a pat on the back.
- 11:39Speaker 6: I was unsure at the time.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Brad Hadden lives in my neighborhood and my neighbor was
- 11:44Speaker 2: the coach of a cricket team that Brad Hadden's kids
- 11:47Speaker 2: are in. And Andrew was umpiring one day and Brad's
- 11:50Speaker 2: youngest kids were next to him in the field and said,
- 11:53Speaker 2: you've done this a bit, have you? And he's like,
- 11:55Speaker 2: he's eight years old and he said, oh, yeah, a bit.
- 11:57Speaker 2: And he said, oh okay, my dad played for Australia.
- 12:00Speaker 4: It's such a boss move. Don't fuck it up.
- 12:09Speaker 6: So can we talk about the netball disaster?
- 12:11Speaker 4: Oh my god, let's talk about that. That was insane.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:14Speaker 6: So I'm scratching my head as to why we have
- 12:17Speaker 6: two separate scoring systems that allows this to happen.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Oh so is that what it is? Yes?
- 12:21Speaker 4: Can you just give us all a quick summary?
- 12:23Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 12:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 6: So the Giants and the Lightning are playing. At the
- 12:26Speaker 6: end of the game, they shaking hands. They think that
- 12:30Speaker 6: there is a winner and a loser. By one point,
- 12:32Speaker 6: the Lightning think they've won the game. The broadcast has
- 12:34Speaker 6: got a draw. So we're all commentating the game and
- 12:39Speaker 6: like it's a draw, talking about extra time and this
- 12:41Speaker 6: is going to happen, And then we look at the
- 12:42Speaker 6: court and go, why are they shaking hands? What's happening.
- 12:45Speaker 6: So the scoreboard in the stadium is different to what
- 12:48Speaker 6: we've got on the broadcast, so they think it's all
- 12:51Speaker 6: over anyway. So I'm looking at the Giants assistant coach
- 12:54Speaker 6: going no, no, no, it's a draw. It's a draw.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Wow.
- 12:57Speaker 6: So they approached the school bench and ask for a review.
- 13:01Speaker 6: And so this review takes fifty minutes and at what
- 13:06Speaker 6: point they decided is a draw, and they get the
- 13:09Speaker 6: teams back on the court at that point to play
- 13:11Speaker 6: the extra time, So that had fifty minutes off, they
- 13:14Speaker 6: had to warm up again, come back and court for
- 13:16Speaker 6: ten minutes of extra time, and the Lightning lost after
- 13:20Speaker 6: they thought they had won. So it was a complete debarcle.
- 13:24Speaker 6: But just so many questions have been raised about And
- 13:26Speaker 6: the sad thing is, Liz, I guess is that it's
- 13:29Speaker 6: these things that have to happen before there's things put
- 13:33Speaker 6: in place. It prompts the change and so it doesn't
- 13:35Speaker 6: happen again. So I guess the shining light is we'll
- 13:37Speaker 6: never see this stuff up happen again, will we Well.
- 13:40Speaker 1: You'd hope not, but you know there is a review
- 13:42Speaker 1: in place. It was interesting. Remember last year the game
- 13:46Speaker 1: between the Swifts and the Thunderbirds was abandoned because of
- 13:49Speaker 1: a power issue that was well and truly outside of
- 13:52Speaker 1: Netball Australia's control. And I think the rule then was
- 13:56Speaker 1: that the game had to be completed. They had to
- 13:58Speaker 1: abandon it because the game, according to the rules of
- 14:02Speaker 1: the league, have to be completed within a two hour window.
- 14:05Speaker 1: That got changed after last year and now the rules
- 14:08Speaker 1: are that the game can be delayed for up to
- 14:10Speaker 1: an hour. So without you being there and knowing the conversations,
- 14:14Speaker 1: I suspect that the game was delayed for fifteen minutes
- 14:16Speaker 1: and then there was a ten minute warm up and
- 14:18Speaker 1: then if the players are on the court, that falls
- 14:19Speaker 1: within within that window. So I guess all you can do.
- 14:23Speaker 1: There will be a review, And now, of course I
- 14:25Speaker 1: sit on the Netball Australia board, so I do I
- 14:29Speaker 1: don't want to prejudice that review or prejudice what's being
- 14:32Speaker 1: spoken about it around it, but I guess you know
- 14:35Speaker 1: there will be an update to procedures that will come
- 14:37Speaker 1: out of that review to ensure that it never happens again.
- 14:40Speaker 1: But I don't know if you remember this Cox. Back
- 14:42Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety four, you were hardly born. You might
- 14:44Speaker 1: have been a toddler back then. Okay, well how are
- 14:48Speaker 1: you in ninety four? You would have been about that.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Don't make me do it eighteen or nineteen nine, exactly,
- 14:52Speaker 1: get your fingers out. You might get Carolyn's fingers out too.
- 14:55Speaker 1: But AnyWho, so back in nine to.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Ninety four, there are only half fingers. Listen, there was.
- 14:59Speaker 5: You have to count up six month increments with Carolyn's fingers. Anyway,
- 15:02Speaker 5: I dig grant.
- 15:02Speaker 1: So the nationally back then was sort of a pre
- 15:06Speaker 1: season tournament before we all went back and played in
- 15:08Speaker 1: our state leagues. And so we got to the finals,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and it was all the final, semifinals, grand finals were
- 15:15Speaker 1: all done over the course of a weekend. So if
- 15:17Speaker 1: you didn't make the grand final, you stayed there and
- 15:18Speaker 1: watched it. And we're in Adelaide and the grand final
- 15:21Speaker 1: was between Garvel and Contacts, and Contacts eventually sort of
- 15:26Speaker 1: evolved into Thunderbirds, and Garble eventually evolved into the Ravens.
- 15:32Speaker 5: When the yeah, do you remember them? Right? So, and
- 15:36Speaker 5: these two class.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Where are those raids from Adelaide?
- 15:39Speaker 1: Right, So these two clubs absolutely hated each other. And
- 15:42Speaker 1: kath Harby as she then wasted, now Kathaby Williams. She
- 15:45Speaker 1: played for Contacts and Jenny Borlace played for Garvel, and.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Those are two quite shit names for clubs, by the way,
- 15:51Speaker 2: I'm glad with me well.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Contacts was spelled with an ex and I think it
- 15:56Speaker 1: was something to do with their sponsors, were like a
- 15:59Speaker 1: dueler or something name Contacts. So anyway, we get to
- 16:01Speaker 1: this Grand Final and we're sitting there watching it and
- 16:05Speaker 1: midway through the last quarter I think it wasn't. Someone
- 16:08Speaker 1: who has watched it will know and they'll tell us
- 16:10Speaker 1: on the Graham Catherine, what's the address of the.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Gram It's no underscore dribble underscore podcast.
- 16:14Speaker 5: That's right.
- 16:15Speaker 1: So we're all sitting there and Julie Fitzgerald I was
- 16:19Speaker 1: sitting next to her because she was my coach, right.
- 16:21Speaker 1: So we played for what was called Sydney Sonova's back
- 16:23Speaker 1: then because it was sponsored by Sonovas. And she looked
- 16:26Speaker 1: at me and she said, the score is wrong. I
- 16:28Speaker 1: was off with the fairies. I was like, man, I
- 16:30Speaker 1: was cranky because we won't playing the Grand Final obviously,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and I was like, oh okay. Anyway, she was really
- 16:34Speaker 1: adamant that the score was wrong and at the end
- 16:38Speaker 1: of the game Contacts were fuming. But back then the
- 16:42Speaker 1: rules were that once the umpire had called full time,
- 16:44Speaker 1: that was it and Contacts went through a court process
- 16:48Speaker 1: to appeal.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Like it was really drawn out.
- 16:50Speaker 1: But you know, and when we went into camp with
- 16:54Speaker 1: the Australian team, Joyce Brown was a coach and she
- 16:56Speaker 1: she wouldn't let any of us talk about it because it.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Was the most good net name, isn't it.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just a great netball name.
- 17:02Speaker 6: She's a great The whole nother story there about Liza's chickens,
- 17:04Speaker 6: we'll get back to that.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So but what was like, it was such a big
- 17:08Speaker 1: controversy and no one wanted to talk about it.
- 17:11Speaker 5: It was really like you couldn't.
- 17:12Speaker 1: If you mentioned it like that the contact girls of
- 17:16Speaker 1: Thunderworld who became the thunderbe it was like the contact
- 17:18Speaker 1: girls that get really upset and the Garvel girls didn't
- 17:20Speaker 1: want to talk about it.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Was horrible.
- 17:22Speaker 1: It was such an awkward time through Australian network. That
- 17:25Speaker 1: was thirty years ago, right nineteen ninety four. So I
- 17:28Speaker 1: was watching that on Saturday night and I thought, I
- 17:30Speaker 1: wonder when it was when that school was wrong. It's
- 17:32Speaker 1: just phenomenal that it was thirty years ago. Almost of
- 17:35Speaker 1: the day it was August nineteen ninety four.
- 17:37Speaker 5: So wow, Obviously.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Did they think it's going to happen with the court case,
- 17:40Speaker 6: that they would ruling their favor and they'd get an
- 17:42Speaker 6: extra pair of assex or something. Yeah, it's not like
- 17:44Speaker 6: we were playing for anything back then.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Can I just ask, though, cath from your perspective there
- 17:50Speaker 2: in the moment on Saturday, why is it fifty minutes?
- 17:53Speaker 4: Is it not?
- 17:54Speaker 2: Surely rewind this thing and you know, rewon the last
- 17:57Speaker 2: five minutes of the game or.
- 17:58Speaker 6: Well, half the problem was getting one team back on
- 18:01Speaker 6: the court. So pretty much as soon as the game finished,
- 18:04Speaker 6: the lightning, they knew that there was people were looking
- 18:06Speaker 6: into it. They left the court, they went up to
- 18:09Speaker 6: the change room and they stayed there. The umpires had gone,
- 18:12Speaker 6: they disappeared. Wow, so we had to the Giants stayed
- 18:15Speaker 6: on court because obviously they thought they'd lost.
- 18:17Speaker 4: The game, and what are the crowd doing?
- 18:18Speaker 6: Well, half the crowd had left, so half the crowd
- 18:21Speaker 6: missed out on this awesome extra time where the Giants
- 18:24Speaker 6: were amazing and came back into the contest and won
- 18:27Speaker 6: the game. But it was incredible, So we had to
- 18:29Speaker 6: wait for either of you to happen. And Nebule Australia
- 18:32Speaker 6: has come out and said there was two issues with it.
- 18:33Speaker 6: There was a scoring mistake that happened after the final
- 18:36Speaker 6: time out there was like a minute twenty four left
- 18:38Speaker 6: on the clock. And they also said there was a
- 18:39Speaker 6: communication failure to both of the sides in light of
- 18:43Speaker 6: what happened afterwards, so there was this fifty minutes was
- 18:46Speaker 6: just miscommunication. No one really knew what was happening. So
- 18:49Speaker 6: we're kind of sitting around but half the problems getting
- 18:51Speaker 6: the umpires and one of the teams back on the court.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Oh wow.
- 18:53Speaker 2: And I'm sad for the Giants. They've had a really
- 18:55Speaker 2: tough season. This is their first win, which is very
- 18:58Speaker 2: exciting and that should be what they're able to celebrate.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Sad for Lightning far out to go.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yep, we thought we had won it and then and
- 19:04Speaker 2: you know, they've had some tough games, so everyone must
- 19:07Speaker 2: have just walked away feeling perplexed. I guess it's like
- 19:12Speaker 2: how do you feel about this? This is no, there's
- 19:14Speaker 2: no euphoria.
- 19:15Speaker 5: No.
- 19:15Speaker 1: And you saw Steph fret Well's interview at the end
- 19:18Speaker 1: that was really hard to watch. I really felt for
- 19:20Speaker 1: her because she made the point that they would have
- 19:22Speaker 1: played that last minute fifty four differently had they known
- 19:25Speaker 1: it was a drawn and sort of got rather than
- 19:27Speaker 1: held the ball up and not scored. You know, the
- 19:30Speaker 1: a given is that perhaps they should have just pushed
- 19:32Speaker 1: the scoreboard anyway. But like all teams, Catherine, now, don't
- 19:36Speaker 1: they have plays, you know, they know how what to
- 19:39Speaker 1: do to eat up twenty seconds thirty seconds?
- 19:41Speaker 6: Well? Absolutely, yeah, and they would have been watching the clock, yep,
- 19:44Speaker 6: watching the scoreline, and if they.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Go for that's the point, then yeah, they're a point ahead.
- 19:49Speaker 1: But it also gives possession back to the Giants, who
- 19:52Speaker 1: then maybe can get the ball and go for a
- 19:53Speaker 1: two point play. Who knows, right, So the hard thing
- 19:56Speaker 1: is that even though the decision gets made, Sunshine case
- 19:59Speaker 1: Lightning can rightly we would have played it different and
- 20:02Speaker 1: the Giants can rightly say, well, we were playing to
- 20:05Speaker 1: what we thought was the scoreboard. So it's so hard,
- 20:07Speaker 1: But isn't it interesting? Like I was thinking that, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 1: Julie Fitzgerald decided to keep her team up on court.
- 20:12Speaker 1: So when extra time started, it looked like the Giants
- 20:16Speaker 1: were still mentally in the game. And you know, you
- 20:19Speaker 1: think about how long Julie's been coaching for and that's
- 20:21Speaker 1: why I was thinking about that ninety four game.
- 20:22Speaker 5: So I was sitting next to Julie, right.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So's she's been around for so long that once something
- 20:26Speaker 1: like that happened. She goes, I've seen this before, right,
- 20:29Speaker 1: everyone say, I'm court, keep your heads in the game.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So coxy being in broadcast, what was it? I thought
- 20:35Speaker 1: you guys did a really good job of actually leaning
- 20:37Speaker 1: into it. You didn't shy away from what had happened.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You covered it really well. What was the feeling like
- 20:43Speaker 1: within the broadcast group when this was happening.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Well, it was tough because we obviously want to give
- 20:48Speaker 6: the viewers information. We had no clue what was happening either,
- 20:52Speaker 6: so we had people running back and forth. We had
- 20:55Speaker 6: our floor manager and producers and directors, everybody trying to
- 20:59Speaker 6: find in But obviously the school bench couldn't be disrupted
- 21:03Speaker 6: because they're trying to do the whole review. So we
- 21:05Speaker 6: were literally just trying to talk about the facts at
- 21:07Speaker 6: the time. You know, the Lightnings left the court. The
- 21:08Speaker 6: giants are still here. But it's funny you mentioned the
- 21:11Speaker 6: giants because there was no doubt in my mind that
- 21:13Speaker 6: they weren't going to win that extra time because they
- 21:15Speaker 6: had stayed on the court. They remain warm, they remain
- 21:18Speaker 6: focused on the job. If they had to play that
- 21:20Speaker 6: extra time.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Maybe they should go back to what we do at
- 21:22Speaker 2: community netball, which is like you get one parent from
- 21:24Speaker 2: each team to stand together with a piece of paper
- 21:26Speaker 2: and together they have to score the game and whatever
- 21:29Speaker 2: is written on there at the end is what is gospel.
- 21:32Speaker 2: There you go, Netbullustrata free consultation from me.
- 21:35Speaker 6: You are welcome. Now he's tell us chatting about Joyce
- 21:39Speaker 6: just before. And isn't it funny how you said the
- 21:41Speaker 6: national coach and I thought of a chicken. That's very disrespectful.
- 21:44Speaker 6: But can you please explain why before I get into
- 21:46Speaker 6: big trouble.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Okay, So twelve or thirteen years ago, we moved to
- 21:50Speaker 1: a farm and I wanted chickens, and I got these
- 21:52Speaker 1: beautiful eyes of brown chickens, and someone said to me, well,
- 21:55Speaker 1: what are their names? I was like, oh yeah, right,
- 21:57Speaker 1: I need to name them and I'm not very imagine.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And I was sitting up there watching them one day
- 22:01Speaker 1: and I realized they all had little personalities, and I
- 22:03Speaker 1: thought I would call them after my old coaches. So
- 22:07Speaker 1: starting from my very first ever coach, Sheila, I had Sheila,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and then I had Helen who was my first rep coach,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and then Julie Joyce and Norma.
- 22:17Speaker 4: But you've never had a Shirley.
- 22:18Speaker 5: No, I've never had a Shirley coach. It is amazing.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Most people would know Norma Plumber as the national coach
- 22:24Speaker 6: the Australian Diamonds. And she's a character. What was that particular.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Chicken like you are leading the witness Catherine, Well, that
- 22:34Speaker 1: particular chicken was actually the top of the pecking order,
- 22:37Speaker 1: so I sort of put her in there and I thought, oh,
- 22:39Speaker 1: that's Norma, right, she likes to know what's going on.
- 22:41Speaker 6: But then sadly all the other chickens got killed.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Well actually sadly, all the other chickens ganged uf and
- 22:47Speaker 1: Norma got packed to death, which was a bit.
- 22:51Speaker 6: It's brutal.
- 22:52Speaker 1: On the it's so brutal, but chickens are bloody brutal
- 22:55Speaker 1: this is what like. They're like, they're reptiles with feathers.
- 22:58Speaker 1: They're so brutal, which is what one of them gets sick.
- 23:00Speaker 1: They picked them to death. Also, sadly, Shearlad was not
- 23:03Speaker 1: a chicken shield. Eventually we discovered as a rooster. When
- 23:07Speaker 1: Sheila started crowing at three o'clock in the morning. We
- 23:10Speaker 1: were like, oh, Sheerla's a rooster. So Sheila went in
- 23:12Speaker 1: the pot.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Oh can we put that photo up on Instagram as well?
- 23:16Speaker 6: Nobody tell Us has plucked and pulled a chicken apart
- 23:21Speaker 6: by hand, and I've seen the photos and I'm still
- 23:24Speaker 6: a little gobsmate. Well, you're a city slicker. Not that
- 23:27Speaker 6: long ago.
- 23:28Speaker 1: No, I watched a video on YouTube figure out how
- 23:30Speaker 1: to do it, and I thought, right, I'm on a
- 23:33Speaker 1: farm now, and you don't.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Waste you don't waste anything anyway.
- 23:38Speaker 1: We ate Sheila Oka Dribbler.
- 23:45Speaker 2: As you know that we do this. This is one
- 23:46Speaker 2: of our favorite segments. It is wind Beneath our Wings
- 23:49Speaker 2: where we get to acknowledge the people out there who
- 23:51Speaker 2: are keeping our wonderful game alive at the community level
- 23:54Speaker 2: each week, and we need nominations from you. So we
- 23:56Speaker 2: have had a couple of nominations this week, and we
- 23:59Speaker 2: need to be a little bit more specific in what
- 24:01Speaker 2: we need from you. We need to know about who
- 24:04Speaker 2: these people are, so we would love a voice memo
- 24:06Speaker 2: from you. DM it to us at our Instagram page,
- 24:09Speaker 2: which is no Underscore Dribble, Underscore podcasts fantastic. We are
- 24:15Speaker 2: really keen to hear about these heroes from around the country,
- 24:18Speaker 2: so please make.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Sure you tell tell us about them.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Tell us what they do, tell us what they're like,
- 24:23Speaker 2: tell us how long they've been involved with the club.
- 24:25Speaker 2: We want to know specific so we can give them
- 24:27Speaker 2: a real shout out. But cath I believe you have
- 24:32Speaker 2: a nomination for win Beneath our Wings this week.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Too, and it's Marie from Northbridge Netball Club. Now let
- 24:38Speaker 6: me tell you about her. So we coach netset go
- 24:40Speaker 6: every Monday. When we get there, Marie, he's probably your
- 24:44Speaker 6: height Caroline, so let's just say that's not overly tall.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Has got the step ladder out and is going around
- 24:50Speaker 6: to all of the netball courts, swinging the goalposts around
- 24:53Speaker 6: from regulation height to the netst go heiight and then
- 24:57Speaker 6: we do our training session and she gets back up
- 24:59Speaker 6: there on a ladder and them all around again every
- 25:01Speaker 6: single Monday, rain Haler Shine. I've started helping her just
- 25:05Speaker 6: from the ground because I can reach the goalpost, which
- 25:08Speaker 6: I think she finds quite amusing. But she is amazing.
- 25:12Speaker 6: She does it all. Hello, Marie, we love you. We
- 25:14Speaker 6: can't live without you.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Oh Marie, you are the wind beneath our wings. And
- 25:17Speaker 2: once again, Dribblers, please let us know. We know that
- 25:20Speaker 2: there are people out there spending dozens of hours each
- 25:23Speaker 2: week helping out with this game.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Liz.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, if you don't send it in, we'll
- 25:27Speaker 1: just keep nominating people from our local clubs round and
- 25:30Speaker 1: rand and round, and eventual'll have to nominate ourselves. And
- 25:33Speaker 1: it's hard to be the wind beneath your own wings, frankly,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and we.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Did today last week.
- 25:37Speaker 2: We are working on something of limited financial value but
- 25:42Speaker 2: very high rarity as a gift to send to our
- 25:44Speaker 2: wonderful wind beneath our wings nominee. So we don't know
- 25:47Speaker 2: what that is yet. We're working on it, but it
- 25:49Speaker 2: will be worth it, I promise once we get there.
- 25:51Speaker 6: Guys. I have got a stack of messages too after
- 25:54Speaker 6: our first episode drop. People are loving it, and some
- 25:57Speaker 6: of them are hysterical. So Ali, Elizabeth, I was listening
- 26:01Speaker 6: to your body on a very full bus. Can confirm
- 26:03Speaker 6: they all think I've got a few screws loose after
- 26:06Speaker 6: I laughed trying to contain it and snorted Keep it up.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Last another one here from Hailey Friedman. First episode Ladies
- 26:16Speaker 6: Great made my morning clean up so much more entertaining.
- 26:19Speaker 6: Keep it Up. And then rod Rod water Worth he
- 26:23Speaker 6: loves the podcast most entertaining. He's been a longtime netball
- 26:27Speaker 6: fan for ages and he wants more international tour stories Elizabeth.
- 26:31Speaker 6: So I'm sure we can come up with some of those.
- 26:33Speaker 1: We're just getting them clear past plus past the sensors.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Just on that. So, Liz, your first game for Australia
- 26:40Speaker 4: was in the Netherlands. Is that right?
- 26:42Speaker 5: Yes?
- 26:42Speaker 4: That is correct, kath yours was in South Africa.
- 26:44Speaker 6: I was against South Africa. I should know, they shouldn't I.
- 26:47Speaker 4: It was in Perth, Okay.
- 26:49Speaker 2: The Netherlands. Can you just give me a bit of
- 26:50Speaker 2: background behind that? That is not something I would have expected,
- 26:52Speaker 2: no or me either.
- 26:54Speaker 5: So it was.
- 26:55Speaker 1: There used to be this thing called the World Games,
- 26:57Speaker 1: which was like the Olympics for non Olympic sports. It
- 27:00Speaker 1: had like netball was in it. There was like casting,
- 27:03Speaker 1: so fishing, casting, bodybuildings, it was like and you know,
- 27:08Speaker 1: there was like acrobatics, sports acrobatics. It was amazing, right,
- 27:12Speaker 1: So you go like we're all we're all staying in
- 27:13Speaker 1: a hotel in the Hague and like all these amazing
- 27:18Speaker 1: people who were just like different, amazingly different physiques and yeah, phenomenal.
- 27:23Speaker 1: So yeah, netball was used to compete in it, and
- 27:26Speaker 1: I think it actually just became really not worthwhile because
- 27:29Speaker 1: it was like finals between US and New Zealand and
- 27:31Speaker 1: they could play that at home and get the money
- 27:33Speaker 1: from the tickets rather than sending us to the Netherlands
- 27:35Speaker 1: and playing in front of three people and a small mouse.
- 27:38Speaker 1: So yeah, but I dibited the Netherlands for Australia. We
- 27:41Speaker 1: played against Wales. Maybe the first five or six intercepts
- 27:45Speaker 1: I got, I threw back to the Welsh goal shooter.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Who would have that was?
- 27:49Speaker 1: It's nice of it she And it's not like I
- 27:50Speaker 1: couldn't say over. She was about five 'ot two and
- 27:53Speaker 1: I came up and just said to me, you're.
- 27:55Speaker 5: Wearing the gold dress. Throwing to the other girls wearing
- 28:00Speaker 5: the gold dress.
- 28:01Speaker 6: That's why she's a dead chicken.
- 28:02Speaker 4: A dead chicken.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Well just on a Dutch theme though, So we love
- 28:06Speaker 2: to have snacks here when while recording, and Mandy, our
- 28:08Speaker 2: wonderful producer, made some biscuits today and they're Dutch biscuits.
- 28:13Speaker 2: So this is our Dutch themed episode for our friends
- 28:15Speaker 2: from the Netherlands. But that's the end of our time together.
- 28:18Speaker 2: I think episode two. I'd like to say thumbs up
- 28:21Speaker 2: to us because we've already started talking about vibrators and
- 28:23Speaker 2: this is our second episode, so this would be up
- 28:26Speaker 2: for me. Yeah, let's understand what we're doing. But dribblers,
- 28:29Speaker 2: we would love you to share this podcast please, so
- 28:33Speaker 2: please have a think, close your eyes, visualize who are
- 28:36Speaker 2: those people you spend time with, the ones you laugh
- 28:38Speaker 2: so hard with that they make you have a little
