- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37In times of persecution and church history, that's when the
- 0:40church gets hot. That's when it separates the
- 0:43chaff from the wheat, the true from the false.
- 0:46China has been under persecution forever, it seems, and they're
- 0:50one of the most on fire nations in the world in regard to
- 0:54underground Christianity. And many of them are put in
- 0:57prison forever once they're caught sharing the Gospel of
- 1:00Christ. But it doesn't stop the people.
- 1:02So whenever Stephen was martyred, they were dispersed,
- 1:06and then the word began to go out into the rest of the world.
- 1:09There are dozens of times in the Bible where God takes an evil
- 1:13action and turns it around for good.
- 1:15In today's message, Pastor Clark teaches us about the story of
- 1:19Stephen, the first person to be martyred because of their faith
- 1:22in Jesus. While Stephen didn't know what
- 1:25was going to happen after his death, he knew that something
- 1:28great awaited him as he met Jesus face to face in heaven.
- 1:33And it was Stephen's death that helped ignite the gospel fire as
- 1:37it spread from Jerusalem out into the entire world.
- 1:41Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts Chapter 7 as he begins his
- 1:45message. Jewish history began with
- 1:48Abraham. Let's get into the word.
- 1:51We are in the book of the Acts, Acts Chapter 7 today.
- 1:56And I just wanted to give a little background on this guy by
- 1:58the name of Steven who were studying about the day.
- 2:02Steven, if you remember, was one of the men who were chosen to
- 2:06help serve the widow's ministry and provide food for people in
- 2:10the early church that needed help, sort of like the welfare
- 2:14thing at the beginning of the church age.
- 2:17He was a man who is full of the Holy Spirit.
- 2:21He was chosen by the Lord to not any serve physically, but also
- 2:25spiritually. I want to read starting with
- 2:28verse 8 of chapter 6, leading into what we're going to talk
- 2:31about the day in Chapter 7. And Steven, full of faith and
- 2:35power, did great wonders and signs among the people.
- 2:39Then there arose some from what is called the synagogue of the
- 2:43Freedmen, Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from
- 2:46Celestia and Asia disputing with Stephen, and they were not able
- 2:51to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.
- 2:54So in other words, this man had an anointing on him.
- 2:57He spoke by the power of the Spirit of God.
- 2:59And even if they didn't like what he said or didn't agree
- 3:02with what he said, they were all open to understanding that he
- 3:05was giving them something that they had never really probably
- 3:08thought too much about. And so then they secretly
- 3:12induced men to say, We have heard him speak blasphemous
- 3:15words against Moses and God, and they stirred up the people and
- 3:19the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him, seized him,
- 3:22and brought him to the council. They also set up false witnesses
- 3:26who said, this man does not cease to speak blasphemous words
- 3:30against this holy place in the law.
- 3:32For we have heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth will destroy
- 3:36this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to
- 3:40us. And all who sat in the council
- 3:42look steadfastly at him, saw his face as a face of an Angel.
- 3:47So there's this lie going around that he's teaching things that
- 3:51aren't true from the Bible. The Old Testament, at that time,
- 3:54the New Testament wasn't written.
- 3:56They were saying that Jesus was going to destroy the temple
- 3:59versus understanding that Jesus was talking about himself being
- 4:03the true temple of the living God and that his body would be
- 4:06crucified, he would be buried, and he were raised again the
- 4:09third day. That's what Jesus was meant when
- 4:10he said this temple will be destroyed in three days.
- 4:13It will be raised up again. Also, the law that Moses
- 4:17brought, we're in a transition. When the church started and the
- 4:21gospel came, it wasn't that the 10 commandments and the law
- 4:24weren't significant anymore, but God never intended anybody to
- 4:29try to be justified by obedience to the 10 commandments.
- 4:33If you had to present yourself before God based upon perfectly
- 4:38following the 10 commandments, and because you did that, you
- 4:41would be accepted into heaven, none of us would be able to get
- 4:44into heaven because all of us have broken the law, the 10
- 4:47commandments. And so all these things are
- 4:51manipulated by these people that were basically raised up to stir
- 4:55up contention amidst the early church.
- 4:58And so Stephen is accused of these various untruths.
- 5:02Nonetheless, he continues and what it is God's called him to
- 5:05do. Now this guy had a very short
- 5:08term ministry. He will be, as we study this
- 5:11chapter, the first martyr of the New Testament church.
- 5:14He's blood was shed because of his faith in Jesus Christ.
- 5:17Since that time, millions of people have been martyred all
- 5:21across the planet. And to this day, people are
- 5:23still being martyred for their faith and hassled because
- 5:26they're just sharing the good news of the gospel.
- 5:29Steven also was from a Greek culture, Greek background.
- 5:34He wasn't the Hebrew of Hebrew, so to speak.
- 5:36He was Jewish, but he was impacted by more the the Greek
- 5:40culture than he was the Hebrew culture.
- 5:42So he was sort of seen as maybe an outsider to those who led in
- 5:47the synagogues and, and, you know, were responsible for
- 5:51leading the nation of Israel and Judeo values.
- 5:55We're also in a transition in the sense that we're going from
- 6:00the emphasis of law to grace. Now, grace is in the old
- 6:05covenant. Grace is in the Old Testament.
- 6:07Again, God never said that anybody would be justified by
- 6:10the works of the law, but the law was given so that man would
- 6:14know that he is a Sinner. And so when we're presented with
- 6:17the commandments and the and the law, it all it does is show us
- 6:21that we're in need of a Savior, that we're sinners and that we
- 6:24can't get to heaven by trying to obey the law, even though we
- 6:28want to live and, and follow obviously the truths of the 10
- 6:32commandments. They're all true and good and
- 6:34they're righteous and they're holy, but none of us can
- 6:37unfortunately do it perfectly right.
- 6:39Only one could fulfill the law, and that was Jesus Christ.
- 6:43And so Stephen also is the bridge between the ministry of
- 6:47Peter and Paul because we'll find out as we study this and
- 6:51later on, Paul is one of the people that are accusing Stephen
- 6:54of blasphemy at this particular time.
- 6:57Saul of Tarsus, who became eventually the apostle Paul.
- 7:01Fascinating how Stephen was the God that the Lord God used to
- 7:05begin to develop this new movement of Christianity.
- 7:09When the persecution came in the early church, it was necessary
- 7:13because they were hanging out in Jerusalem and they had done a
- 7:16great job getting the gospel out in Jerusalem.
- 7:18A matter of fact, they were accused of filling the city with
- 7:22the word of Christ, the gospel of Christ.
- 7:25And so now the Lord knows that it has to go into not any
- 7:30Jerusalem, but Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the
- 7:35earth in times of persecution and church history.
- 7:38That's when the church gets hot. That's when it separates the
- 7:42chaff from the wheat, the true from the false.
- 7:44China has been under persecution forever, it seems, and they're
- 7:48one of the most on fire nations in the world in regard to
- 7:52underground Christianity. And many of them are put in
- 7:55prison forever once they're caught sharing the gospel of
- 7:58Christ. But it doesn't stop the people.
- 8:00So whenever Stephen was martyred, they were dispersed
- 8:04and then the word began to go out to the rest of the world.
- 8:07So everything that happens in this sermon today that Stephen
- 8:11is going to give us in Chapter 7 is all about the sovereignty of
- 8:15God and how he has everything under control, even when maybe
- 8:19we don't think things are under control.
- 8:21And that everything that happens in history, in biblical history
- 8:25was always for a purpose, never a mistake made.
- 8:28No one missing the point. God had a directive, He put it
- 8:32in place. It was us that refused to accept
- 8:35the direction of God and we formed our own opinions and not
- 8:39wanting to hear from the truth of the word of God as the Jewish
- 8:43people didn't want to hear really the truth.
- 8:46And so we're going to read about the history here.
- 8:49It starts out and verse one, the high priest said to him, are
- 8:52these things. So basically, Stephen, are you
- 8:55stirring up all these problems? Are you blaspheming our temple
- 8:59and blaspheming Moses? And he said this is an
- 9:02opportunity now for him to speak up.
- 9:05He said, brethren and fathers, listen, the God of glory
- 9:08appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia
- 9:12before he dwelt in Haran and said to him, get out of your
- 9:15country and from your relatives and come to a land that I will
- 9:19show you. What's interesting here is that
- 9:22Abraham and I don't know how much you've thought about these
- 9:25things. I was on vacation back in April
- 9:29and I was, I was going to get breakfast and I heard a, a short
- 9:31message by a messianic Christian guy, Jewish guy, And he was
- 9:36explaining that in the beginning there wasn't this division of
- 9:40Jew and Gentile. Basically, when God created the
- 9:43world, we're all his creation and we all fell.
- 9:47And Paul talks about later on in the in the New Testament that
- 9:50there's neither Jew nor Gentile bond or free or male or female.
- 9:54In other words, like it isn't like people groups or skin color
- 9:59or ethnic origin or being born a man or a woman is insignificant.
- 10:04These are all part of God's beautiful creation, right?
- 10:07But he never holds up one higher than the other.
- 10:10He never says that the man's more important than the woman or
- 10:13this nation is better than that nation.
- 10:16I mean, we're all fallen and we need a savior.
- 10:18So he has this incredible plan. And so the guys talking, he says
- 10:22Abraham was a Gentile and that that blew my mind because I
- 10:27never like even conceived that that he was a Gentile.
- 10:32He was chosen by God to start this nation, Israel, to begin to
- 10:37develop his plan with the chosen people group, to have the law
- 10:43and the prophets to bring the Messianic sea to fruition
- 10:47through the bloodline of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 10:52And so then he instituted the covenant between him and God.
- 10:56Abraham, first he said, through you all the nations of the earth
- 11:00will be blessed. And then God designed this
- 11:03procedure called circumcision. And that's a whole another
- 11:06subject for another time. But all these things were
- 11:09ordained by God to put in a people group to send the message
- 11:13of the gospel to humanity. Fascinating.
- 11:17So Abraham, he's this guy, this normal guy.
- 11:20And God favored him and, and chose him to be this one who
- 11:23would be the first Jewish, this person basically to start this
- 11:27nation called Israel didn't exist prior to this calling out
- 11:33of God to Abraham, but it was in the plan of God before the
- 11:36foundation of the earth. So whenever the we, we talk
- 11:40about God's chosen people, it wasn't that they were better
- 11:43than the Gentile, but God had to choose a people group to get us
- 11:48to where we are today in regard to the gospel and Christianity.
- 11:53And so he tells Abraham what to do.
- 11:55Get out from your relatives. Come to the land and I'll show
- 11:57you. So he comes out of the land of
- 11:59the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran.
- 12:02And from there, when his father was dead, he moved him to this
- 12:05land in which you now dwelt, which is the promised land.
- 12:08He's talking to all these people in Jerusalem right now.
- 12:13What's also interesting, God starts when he calls us in a
- 12:16very basic way. It's it's it's somewhat not
- 12:19totally clear when we're called by God to do some kind of
- 12:23ministry or some kind of calling.
- 12:25We just step up in faith and we be obedient to what God's put on
- 12:29our heart. So this is what Abraham did, but
- 12:31it's interesting. God had a plan for him, you
- 12:34know, beyond waiting to his dad died, but he waited.
- 12:38His father died and there was no problem with that.
- 12:41God honored that, but it wasn't like immediately everything came
- 12:44into clarity for him. And so he goes from there.
- 12:50After his dad dies, he moves him to this land in which you now
- 12:53dwell. And God gave him no inheritance
- 12:56in it, not even enough to set his foot on.
- 12:59What's interesting is that Abraham was the father of all
- 13:02this blessing that would come to Israel and to us as New Covenant
- 13:06believers. The seed of Abraham impacted us
- 13:09too. It's it's the remnant, it's the
- 13:11people of God from the beginning of time until the end of time
- 13:14when the world is no more as we know it.
- 13:17And so he's speaking to Abraham about this big plan of this
- 13:21promised land. Now, Abraham never was given
- 13:24anything personally. The only ground he had was hit
- 13:28with the burial plot he bought to bury Sarah in.
- 13:31It's probably, you know, 6 by 6 feet or something.
- 13:34That was all that he had entitlement to.
- 13:36But everything was futuristic here and what God was promising
- 13:40to Abraham, So and God gave him no inheritance in it, not even
- 13:44enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no
- 13:48child and Abraham waited a long time right before his son was
- 13:53born Isaac remember Sarah and him they she was not fertile and
- 13:58they got impatient and so Hagar came along and then Ishmael was
- 14:03born and then you had that Pagan race.
- 14:06It was developed that pretty much a symbolic of Islam in the
- 14:09in the Mideast that came out of the seat of a Vishnail.
- 14:14But Abraham and Sarah, just like you and I at times aren't
- 14:19patient with God. We get ahead of God.
- 14:22We want to take matters in our own hands.
- 14:24We want to I think I got a better way.
- 14:26I got a better idea, Lord. And so we end up messing things
- 14:29up, right? Because, you know, he, he was
- 14:32faithful to, to his promise. And eventually he told them that
- 14:36they were going to have a child. They thought it was ridiculous
- 14:39because they were too old to to be able to do this anymore.
- 14:42But the Lord, you know, whenever he says he's going to do
- 14:45something, he's going to do it regardless of the the
- 14:47limitations of human ability, medical science.
- 14:52And so God promises to do something here.
- 14:55Even when Abraham didn't have a child yet, he promised to give
- 14:58it to him for a possession and to his descendants after him.
- 15:02But God spoke in this way that his descendants would dwell in a
- 15:06foreign land and that they would bring them into bondage and
- 15:10oppress them for 400 years. So not any was he given that the
- 15:13picture of this promise in his covenant, but also the reality
- 15:16that because of Israel's disobedience to what it was, a
- 15:19goddess established that they would go into captivity for 400
- 15:23years, very difficult. They wouldn't have freedom to
- 15:26move about like you and I have in this country.
- 15:28They were isolated and treated as slaves for many years and
- 15:32abused and taken advantage of. Nonetheless, this was again the
- 15:37part of the plan. So this bondage lasted all this
- 15:42time, and the nation to whom they will be in bondage, God
- 15:46says, I will judge, says God. And after that they shall come
- 15:49out and serve me in this place. So then God had this plan for
- 15:53Moses, which we'll look at here in a minute.
- 15:55So he's giving all this history of what God has done since the
- 15:59beginning of time to bring the reality to the world that Jesus
- 16:04Christ truly is the Messiah. So he gave him the covenant of
- 16:09circumcision. And so Abraham begot Isaac and
- 16:12circumcised him on the 8th day. And Isaac begot Jacob and Jacob
- 16:17begot the 12 patriarchs. So this is like the history of
- 16:20this nation now beginning to develop and how God's going to
- 16:25work through the the Jewish people.
- 16:29The 8th day is significant too, because that's when it's safe
- 16:32medically to do circumcision because the blood's able to be
- 16:35clotted. Everything was according to the
- 16:37to the plan of God. And so the patriarchs now we're
- 16:41looking at next in Egypt, verse 9, and the patriarchs becoming
- 16:46envious sold Joseph into Egypt so that we hear that the fathers
- 16:50are the patriarchs of the nation of Israel.
- 16:55These guys were scoundrels. They were jealous of their
- 16:58brother Joseph and they had him arrested.
- 17:01They basically didn't care if he got killed or not.
- 17:03They threw him into a pit and he was taken to be a slave and in
- 17:07Egypt's place and he went through a lot of adversity and
- 17:10difficulty because of his so-called godly brothers.
- 17:14But God was with him. No matter what happened in life,
- 17:17what happens in your life, what happens in biblical history, we
- 17:21have to understand if we belong to God, God is always with us,
- 17:24right? He'll never leave us or forsake
- 17:26us. Sometimes we feel feel like
- 17:27we're alone. Sometimes we feel like he, he
- 17:30doesn't care. He's not with us or he's not
- 17:32watching out for us. God is always watching out for
- 17:36us, always caring, always listening to our cries.
- 17:40But God was with him, and he delivered him out of all his
- 17:43troubles. It doesn't say he delivered him
- 17:45out of some of his troubles. He delivered him out of all his
- 17:48troubles, and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of
- 17:51Pharaoh, king of Egypt, And he made him governor over Egypt and
- 17:55all his house. Now a famine in a great trouble
- 17:58came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers
- 18:02found those substance. There was nothing to eat.
- 18:05And when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out
- 18:09our fathers. That's the brothers of, of
- 18:11Joseph 1st. And the second time Joseph was
- 18:14made known to his brothers, the first time they went down, they
- 18:17didn't know that their brother was the one second in command to
- 18:21Pharaoh, but they'd sure found out the second time.
- 18:24And when Jacob heard that there was no grain in Egypt, he sent
- 18:27the father's first. And the second time Joseph was
- 18:30made known to his brothers and Joseph's family became known to
- 18:34the Pharaoh. So Pharaoh said, hey, bring your
- 18:36whole family down. I want to meet them and bless
- 18:38them and take care of them. So Joseph sent and called his
- 18:41father Jacob and all his relatives to him, 75 people.
- 18:45So Jacob went down to Egypt and he died, he and our fathers, and
- 18:50they were carried back to Shechem and laid in in the tomb
- 18:52that Abraham bought for the sum of money from the sons of Hamor,
- 18:56the father of Shechem. So here we are in this beautiful
- 19:01arrangement of Joseph being in this place at this time to take
- 19:06care of the the Jewish people during the famine.
- 19:09Well, what happened was eventually Joseph passed on, the
- 19:13new Pharaoh came on the scene, had no connection with the
- 19:17people, the nation of Israel. And so the persecution then
- 19:21began to occur again. The difficulty, the enslavement.
- 19:25You remember the children of Israel in bondage.
- 19:27You watch the movie, I'm sure 10 Commandments and saw Moses open
- 19:31up the water and all that. Well, you saw the Red Sea, but
- 19:34you saw how the people were being beaten and slaughtered
- 19:38because they weren't working hard enough for fast enough.
- 19:41And and this is a wicked, wicked leadership at the time.
- 19:44And so God delivers Israel by Moses.
- 19:47We'll we'll study this little section now.
- 19:49And this is all building up to Steven really clearly helping
- 19:54these Jewish people that think they're so religious that
- 19:57they're missing the whole point when they rejected Christ and
- 20:00had him crucified. But when the time of the promise
- 20:03drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and
- 20:07multiplied in Egypt. I mean, this people group is
- 20:09growing and growing, multiplying, growing, truly
- 20:12being fruitful and multiplying till another king arose who did
- 20:15not know Joseph. This man dealt treacherously
- 20:18with our people and oppressed our forefathers, making them
- 20:21expose their babies. Remember they they were told
- 20:24they were going to kill the the first born males.
- 20:27All that kind of stuff, making them expose.
- 20:29Babies so they might not live. At this time Moses was born and
- 20:33was well pleasing to God, and he was brought up in his father's
- 20:37house for three months. But when he was set out,
- 20:39Pharaoh's daughter took him away and brought him up as our own
- 20:43son. And Moses was learned in all the
- 20:45wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in the words of deeds.
- 20:48So God spared Moses like his mother, put him in that little
- 20:51basket in the bull rushes, and put him in the water.
- 20:54Thereafter the Pharaoh's daughter saw the baby and took
- 20:57the baby as her own and raised this baby in the palace there.
- 21:02And so Moses knew all about Egyptian Pagan idolatry.
- 21:06He knew about all their false religion and all the stuff.
- 21:10Yet he was called by God in the very beginning before he was
- 21:15even born. The Bible says that God's favor
- 21:18was on Moses when he was a baby. Now when he was 40 years old and
- 21:23Moses lived to be 120. So Moses life is separated into
- 21:263 segments of 40 years and then when he was 40 years old it came
- 21:31into his heart to visit his brother and the children of
- 21:33Israel. Wasn't that interesting?
- 21:35One day he gets up and all of a sudden he's got a burden for his
- 21:38own people. Up until that point, he was
- 21:41probably just living his life, doing his thing.
- 21:43And all of a sudden the Holy Spirit puts his passion in his
- 21:46heart to visit the children of Israel.
- 21:49And he saw one of them suffer wrong.
- 21:51He defended and avenged him who was oppressed and struck down
- 21:54the Egyptians. So this Egyptians being brutal
- 21:57to this Jewish slave, taking advantage of them, beating them.
- 22:01Moses sees it, goes over and intervenes.
- 22:04And in pushing down this Egyptian, this guy ended up
- 22:07dying. He basically was murdered.
- 22:11For he supposed that this brother would have understood
- 22:13that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not
- 22:16understand. So Moses, whenever he had this
- 22:19burden, he already understood that somehow he was responsible
- 22:24to be the one who would deliver the children of Israel out of
- 22:28Egypt. What a what a calling all these
- 22:33people, millions of people and one man.
- 22:38And he senses this burden that they got to be helped, they got
- 22:41to someone's got to do something to get these people out of this
- 22:44horrible place and under this terrible bondage.
- 22:47So he supposed that his brother would have understood that God
- 22:50would deliver them by his hand, but they didn't understand.
- 22:53So the next day he appears to two of them as they're fighting.
- 22:57So 2 Jewish guys, they're fighting about who knows what.
- 23:00And he tries to reconcile them saying, men, you are brethren,
- 23:04you belong to each other, your family.
- 23:05Why do you wrong one another that he who did his neighbor
- 23:09wrong pushed him away, saying, who made you a ruler and a judge
- 23:13over us? Do you want to kill me as you
- 23:15did the Egyptian yesterday. Then as this saying, Moses fled
- 23:19and became a dweller in the land of Midian where he had two sons.
- 23:24So Moses hears us. He's probably looking around.
- 23:26I hope no one heard this. I'm getting out of here because
- 23:28they catch me for this. I'm I'm in trouble.
- 23:31So so he took off. It's interesting that any
- 23:35messenger that God has sent and you can study throughout the Old
- 23:38Testament. Isaiah was a prophet.
- 23:40He was son into Jeremiah was sown in a prison.
- 23:43I mean, all the people that God had sent to bring the message
- 23:47was always somehow either martyred, rejected, or just
- 23:51betrayed. This is just the the history of
- 23:54of the nation of Israel. Thanks for joining us on this
- 23:58journey through Acts. On today's edition of Living
- 24:01Waters of Grace, Pastor Clark shares that one of the most
- 24:04remarkable things about the book of Acts is how it shows the
- 24:08disciples transformation. The followers of Jesus we meet
- 24:12here are very different from the often confused and fearful
- 24:17disciples in the Gospels. After Jesus's death and
- 24:21resurrection, and especially through the power of the Holy
- 24:24Spirit, the apostles experienced a profound change in their
- 24:29hearts and boldness. Their faith became unwavering,
- 24:33and they moved forward with courage to spread the gospel
- 24:36despite opposition and hardship. Acts reminds us that the same
- 24:41Spirit who empowered them is at work in US today, shaping our
- 24:46hearts and giving us strength to live boldly for Christ.
