- 0:09Speaker 1: FAQs with Nathan Sutherland and Mark Holland.
- 0:13Speaker 2: And time again for another edition of Gospel Tech FAQs,
- 0:16Speaker 2: Frequently Asked Questions. Mark Holland joined by Nathan Sutherland. He's
- 0:20Speaker 2: a Gospel Tech guy, full-time teacher these days, sixth grade teacher,
- 0:25Speaker 2: and also though has had this ministry for a number
- 0:27Speaker 2: of years, goes around, speaks to churches and parent, grandparent groups.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And Nathan, we wanted to address a subject that's coming
- 0:35Speaker 2: up alarmingly more and more, and that is sextortion. I
- 0:40Speaker 2: want you to tell us a little bit more what
- 0:41Speaker 2: you mean by this and how this is affecting young
- 0:43Speaker 2: men in particular.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, so the idea of sexual extortion comes from this world, really,
- 0:50Speaker 3: of the, what do you call it, the advent of AI,
- 0:53Speaker 3: where we will have young people online. And sextortion, by
- 0:56Speaker 3: the way, is the term the FBI uses for this.
- 0:58Speaker 3: So I did not make this up. But the idea
- 1:01Speaker 3: is you'll have a young person online. It often is
- 1:04Speaker 3: young men. They're on social media engaging with people and
- 1:08Speaker 3: someone reaches out. It typically is a cute young lady.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And she says something like, wow, you also like math
- 1:13Speaker 3: or you're really good at those sports or you're super cute.
- 1:16Speaker 3: And they start a conversation. And at some point, this
- 1:18Speaker 3: young lady will send a picture of herself without clothes.
- 1:22Speaker 3: That young man is then encouraged to reciprocate. And many
- 1:25Speaker 3: times we have documentation of the young man just walking away,
- 1:28Speaker 3: ignoring it, leaving it. And eventually through persistence, that young
- 1:32Speaker 3: lady gets him to send one back, except we find
- 1:34Speaker 3: out that that young lady was deep faked. It is
- 1:36Speaker 3: not in fact a teenage girl. It's an adult man
- 1:38Speaker 3: somewhere in the world who then says, hey, I've got
- 1:40Speaker 3: this picture of you. I'm going to send it to
- 1:42Speaker 3: everyone you know and ruin your life unless you pay
- 1:44Speaker 3: me X amount of money. Sometimes it's a couple hundred bucks.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Sometimes it's in the thousands. Side note, never pay the money.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Train your child how to tell a loving adult. We
- 1:53Speaker 3: want them to be healthy and we want these people
- 1:55Speaker 3: to not be able to do this to other people.
- 1:57Speaker 3: So while this is embarrassing and horrifying, please, please, please
- 2:01Speaker 3: reach out to your child and start these conversations about
- 2:02Speaker 3: where they get their identity because it isn't in the
- 2:05Speaker 3: fact they've never made a mistake. What we have now, though,
- 2:07Speaker 3: is just between October 2021 and March 2023, we had
- 2:11Speaker 3: 20 young men in the United States take their lives
- 2:15Speaker 3: because the level of trauma to them reached such a
- 2:19Speaker 3: threshold that they believed it was better for them to
- 2:21Speaker 3: not continue. Just in those kind of 18 months, We
- 2:26Speaker 3: had 13,000 reports in the United States of sextortion, most
- 2:30Speaker 3: of them boys. So in 2025, last year, the last
- 2:34Speaker 3: report I saw was we had more than 54,000 reports.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So we have more than tripled the number in just
- 2:42Speaker 3: two and a half years. This is a growing problem.
- 2:46Speaker 3: We need our young people to know where their identity
- 2:47Speaker 3: comes from. It comes from a good God who saves
- 2:49Speaker 3: them as sinners and makes them saints and And when
- 2:52Speaker 3: we make mistakes, our response is repentance. We acknowledge that
- 2:55Speaker 3: was wrong. Like, yeah, I shouldn't be sending naked pictures
- 2:58Speaker 3: of myself to strangers. This is a poor life choice.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And it doesn't make me a mistake just because I
- 3:04Speaker 3: made a mistake. We don't pay these people because that
- 3:07Speaker 3: just incentivize them. There's a whole another conversation to be
- 3:11Speaker 3: what's happening in the background there. But just know if
- 3:14Speaker 3: your child is online, strangers have access to them. Some
- 3:17Speaker 3: of those strangers are nefarious and are looking to literally
- 3:19Speaker 3: extort money. using deep fake technology to show a fake
- 3:23Speaker 3: young person and then get a real picture from your
- 3:25Speaker 3: young person. And we want our young people to know
- 3:28Speaker 3: that if they're online, they need to know the words
- 3:30Speaker 3: for this, the word sextortion, the word pornography, and the
- 3:33Speaker 3: word of God that tells them who they are.
- 3:36Speaker 2: What you mentioned there, too, is it's not necessarily a
- 3:38Speaker 2: boy who's surfing porn. That's like a whole other show.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Right, no.
- 3:41Speaker 2: But they're just doing normal interacting, and then it kind
- 3:44Speaker 2: of devolves into this It's extortion, and I can imagine
- 3:48Speaker 2: how that's quite traumatizing for the child and then the
- 3:51Speaker 2: family as they find out about this. But again, moms
- 3:54Speaker 2: and dads need to be calm about this and let
- 3:58Speaker 2: their kid come to them and tell them what's going on.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and seek your child out. Ask them if they've
- 4:03Speaker 3: heard of this or if they know anyone this has
- 4:05Speaker 3: happened to, and then build up healthy hedges. You need
- 4:08Speaker 3: some accountability around your home network, your personal devices, and
- 4:12Speaker 3: your family through conversation and relationship. Because relationship is really
- 4:16Speaker 3: the way you're going to overcome something like this. It's
- 4:18Speaker 3: not your kid. You can't go look for this situation.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It has to come to you because that's the premise
- 4:24Speaker 3: is this is a deep fake person. So they have
- 4:26Speaker 3: fake accounts. But yes, that relationship is number one. And
- 4:29Speaker 3: then device and network safety is going to be your
- 4:33Speaker 3: next step.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, tough subject, but we've got to have some guardrails.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We've got to be informed that this is going on.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Those are the kinds of frequently asked questions we have
- 4:42Speaker 2: for Nathan Sutherland, host of Gospel Tech. He covers a
- 4:45Speaker 2: lot of these subjects and more in-depth on his program,
