- Hemispheric Views 164.mp3 La la pa do pa In rescheduling to accommodate all three of our schedules, Jason just told us this is in the middle of his Saturday night, or wait, no, Friday night your time, movie night. You're in the middle of watching a movie. Yeah, he'll get he'll get screen burn in from the pause frame if we go too long. Oh god. No, it's okay. I've got the little DVD logo bouncing around. Cool, cool. Maybe it'll hit the corner. Yeah. Oh, perfect. I think they have that on Plex. Now that's a minor PSA. We actually have a major PSA. I'm very excited about this because we teased last year that something would be happening in the world of Arcadia June. Now Andrew and I were kind of thinking, oh what could that be? And we didn't pull our weight this time. This time? Do we ever? No, no, no, but I mean Jason went all out and actually just I don't want to say redesigned, but has rethought it for everyone involved. Jason, I'm just gonna hand over to you 'cause I don't want to still do your thunder. Fantastic. Okay, yes. So I will somewhat read verbatim from the uh from the new website, which you can find at June dot hemisphericfuse.com and okay so we've been doing Arcadia June for five years now I believe is the number. We've had our highs and our lows in terms of winners and trophies and excitement. And we thought, you know what? We want to do something a little different. We don't want to totally just throw everything out of the out of the window. We want to keep some of that tradition in there. But we want to mix it up. So for 2026, which is this year, we are now going to be doing a slight rebrand, a slight tweaking of the formula. Arcadia June henceforth will be known as the Hemispheric Cavalcade bingo arcade June Burie. Or June Berrie for short. Amazing. That rolls off the tongue. Or June Burie for short. Just to be clear, yeah. And we're not doing away with Arcadia, right? Right. So this year, so we're gonna do we're we're changing things I think for the best in in just a new format in general. Because we've been doing the same, you know, the same scoreboards and everything year over year, and it's like, you know, how many times can you do that in a row? So this year we're gonna do for June, we're gonna do thirty unique challenges, one announced every day. And these could be things that have to do with food. Some of them actually are Arcadia game uh scores that you have to try to attain, photos, music, all kinds of things. Obviously, I'm not going to tell you the list because that would ruin all of June Burie. Needless to say, there will be 30 unique things that you will need to complete throughout the month. Um it's not crazy, you don't have to like do them on the day. It's just they will be announced one per day. You will go through and do them, they will be scored as such, you will get a point for every challenge you complete. And then you say, wait, what if everybody does all 30? Everybody has 30 points. We did think of that. You also will be getting bonus points for top three entrants in each category, and this will be based on very impartial judging between the three of us. So it's totally fair. That's gonna go well. We'll obviously gr agree every time. Uh and then also of like when I said the Arcadia games, obviously scores will be uh involved in that as well. So this is it. This is June Bree. I think it's gonna be cool. We're gonna we don't have Discord anymore, we have the forum, so we're gonna have new a forum category where you can create your thread there and you'll post all your photos or audio clips or whatever things are part of the challenges. And that will be uh June Burie. I think it's gonna be awesome. There's gonna be 30 unique entries from everybody. And uh yeah. That forum as well. Similar as we have june.hamisphereuse.com. We also have chat.hemospherews.com. Not only is that running during Junebury, that is running twenty four seven all the time. Five nines of uptime for that thing. So you can go there right now. Chat.hamisp.com, you can comment, you can talk. You know why it's got five nines? Why's that, Jason? Because we don't run it on GitHub. Oh sick burn. It's been having a bit of downtime, hasn't it? AI. Agentic coding has really hurt it. This is a great idea, Jason, and I appreciate all the work that you've put into the back end and the creative idea of this. What I also love is that we haven't lost Arcadia. As you said, the games are still there. It does maybe make it more accessible to people who aren't necessarily just into gaming. There are different challenges that let's just say bleed into your real life, your actual material life, and you might actually have to do things in person. And what I also love is that even though we've done this, our highly congratulated and celebrated five time Arcadia June winner, listener Eric, may still win the whole thing. If it's possible. That's where that's where our d our deterministic voting comes into it. But um it's still possible. Like it steers it a bit, but Eric, go for it. Let's see what you could do. The guy's a machine. He is. So thanks, Jason. I think the June Bree will be more inclusive of everybody and also more hemispheric, if that's a hint. For the sake of branding and promotion, yeah. All three of us, we need to synchronize and say in an ex very excited voice, it's June Barrie. Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, so we're three, two, one it's June Bree Alright Martin you just edit that down into I hope my gut's laughing like that. Perfectness. Okay, so I want to when this show is released, that will be perfect. We will all be Wonderful. It's June Brick. Add some echo effects. You know, really jazz it up. Look, this is concerning to me in the notes, kinda not really. Let's just get it out of the way. Jason, I can see a robot emoji. What do you want to do? Well, it has been a certain number of months since we have migrated our our our notes for the show uh show notes we call them so there's show notes that go out to the public and then there's show notes that are internal so I think first of all we need to come up with a different name because that's confusing. We have it at the top of our show notes. It says run sheet. We we've got a name for it. Oh, we've already got it. Okay, good. It's in the H1. First one's done. Okay. Love it. Um this has just frankly been working too well. And I just feel like it's time to to mix things up. That sums you up to you. I don't know what you think, Andrew, but you know, I'm usually one for change. It's just been worth it's it's like I've forgotten about it. Right. You it's working so well. It just does what we want. That seems like it's time for change. I really like this solution. It's the first one I've ever found that I genuinely enjoy using. That alone makes it one of the greatest achievements, if not the greatest achievement of this podcast triumvirate, the fact that we all agree on and love this system. That's unheard of. And for precisely that reason we have to we have to leave. Okay. Can can I propose an alternate idea. What if we migrate from the commercial version of this tool to the self-hosted same thing version of this tool. Is this a segue to the next topic or is this the same topic? Because I'm keeping notes here. It's both. It's both. Okay. It's both. I could conceivably up up take this whole thing and move it to a self-hosted version, and it would be the exact same thing. So therefore, we would get the benefit of the tool we like, and the secondary benefit of getting to change it without having to actually change anything. How good does that sound? Does that make you happy? It does. Okay. So it won't be hack MD or we hack J B that's gonna be. Basically, yeah. Yeah. Okay. How do we feel about that? Do we love it? Yeah. Fine with me. We love it. Okay. I love it. I love it. I love it. W ha we we were never gonna get away with saying no, were we, Martin? We we had no chance. I know my fate. Yeah. You had no choice. He's already done it, hasn't he? We're probably he's he's just sitting there waiting. I'm also aware that Andrew, while you and I, you know, more than pull our weight in all of the audio editing and production of this show. Jason is ultimately the technical back end. And for me to say, no, I don't want that, it's like saying F you, even though you do all that work. So Jason, host yourself away. Self-host away. Yes. Thanks. It would have been really amazing if I would have just done it and then set up a forward to forward the old one to the new one and said, You're already on it. But I didn't quite get to that. So next time. Does yours offer pass keys? I would like pass key, please. No, absolutely not. Everything uh is is a strong no pass key uh allowed. Oh okay. I'm very anti-pass keys. I don't know if we've talked about this, but I just Yeah, I'm I'm not huge on them. I can't be f<unk>ed with I can't mess with a pass key. They're just I don't see a benefit in it. It's more trouble than it seems like it's worth. What happens if you have a pass key which is linked to the biometric scan of your thumbprint and then you experience serious burns accidentally picking up an iron a la George Costanza and then you don't have your thumbprint anymore. Or in the maybe slightly more realistic scenario, you find yourself needing to access information on a computer device that's not yours. Yeah. You can't. You're completely screwed. So I don't know. If you love Paskies, great, but I I'm not I'm not buying into this. Along the spectrum of realistic situations, it's a concern. Right. Yes. So Andrew, yeah, what Jason is saying is you're wrong. Yeah, I've picked up on that. No, no passkey for you. Okay. I'm just here to fuel the fire. I don't really mind. Well Jason Jason thinks he's Mr. Smarty Pants 'cause of all his like self-hosting, yada yada and he put a question here about uh you know what what are you guys self-hosting and then he smarmally said after that and why is the answer nothing. L Iike,'mm sorry, Jasine, what do you even know? I I self host, okay? What is that question all about? I was offended. Oh. Well that was kind of the point. Okay. To cause offense. So do you have anything more you want to say or I'm just gonna launch into my rebuttal straight away. Launch. I wanna I want you to launch like a Phoenix into the sky. Okay, let me launch. I self-host. I have a Mac Mini that hosts twenty four seven. It is who it's been hosting for years. It hosts a um iCloud backup distribution system. Like you know with the app downloads and you can you can allow it to act as a caching thing and then it it propagates to the network. So I do that. That's hosting. I also have a Plex server running on that thing. That hosts. I can access that Plex server from anywhere in the world, as can a number of my friends I'm hosting. That's true. I have Plex Life. I have actual budget. Now, I'm gonna call this self-hosting. It's actually hosted on picker pods and I pay money for that. But I figure I it's my server, I manage it. That's mine. I self-host actual budget. I gave you a half point for that one. Okay. And then I have Fresh RSS, which I don't host and um I'm not really paying for I'm I'm freeloading from um One Prime Plus member Eric who hosts it on my behalf. Which I think he's actually now using the one on my server, so I don't know what's going on. Oh really? Well look I've been using the um the microblog inkwell service recently, so I could potentially even shut that down, Eric. I've been thinking about emailing you about that. But I figure that's still me hosting via Eric who is self hosting. Don't even email, just tell them right now. Like you have to email them. That's the great part. Um I've got I've got a backup of my OPML file. You can turn it off if you want. Thanks. I appreciate Yeah, and you have you have my fresh RSS, so you can just use that one. That is true. That is true. I appreciate the years of uptime. I don't want to feel like I'm ungrateful. I am very grateful. So thank you for allowing me to self-host on your self-hosting platform. I've never heard the word host so many times in my life as in this last five minutes. I'm show host. And then and then we go to Martin. Martin probably has like multiple servers running constantly, redundant backups. He's farming Bitcoin. Probably, yeah. Well I mean, what have I written in the notes? Tell me, what have I written in the notes? Andrew wrote It's not nothing. What did I write? It's not not nothing. Wait, what? Question mark. So it's not So what does it's not not nothing mean? It's a double negative. It's not not not nothinghing.. That means it's somet So what are you self hosting? Well it's not not nothing. So it's not nothing means that it's something. But if it's not not nothing, it means it's not something, in which case it's nothing. So the answer is I don't self host, it's nothing. He's triple negative. Oh my gosh.. Yeah Oh boy. And still after all of that, I didn't say not as many times as Andrew said host. I guess you could have probably just put a foot there and that would have been this about the same answer. Yeah, but I wanted to waste your time a bit more than that. Um look, self-hosting, not against it. Great idea. I would love to do stuff like that. I honestly just don't have the time to think about it. And particularly for something like photos, because you self-host photos, don't you, Jason? Yes. You moved everything from iPhone, yeah. Um, very appealing, but it's so and you know, this is obviously all corporate like big tech capitalism succeeding. Like I'm very much in entrenched iCloud Photo Library, for example, and all of these family members and friends who are now tied to the tentacles of my many shared albums and all that stuff. I suppose I could undo all of that and they could download the photos and no one would be that upset, but I just don't have the time to think about it. And you have to remember: like, the only reason I'm able to get internet access to even participate in this show when we record each Fortnite is that ridiculous PowerPoint, you know, share your internet through the PowerPoint or the PowerLet across the house thing? Like this building. Seriously, no no no. It's like we have decent enough internet, but the only way that I can get internet in this room is by doing it through the PowerPoint. Because the one like connection that we have for our internet is in the kitchen on the other side of the place. Concrete walls. I had like a data guy come in here and he was like, Yeah, you pr'ettyd much have to drill through all the walls, which would be insanely expensive. Or you could do that thing with it's like exposed in startup offices or warehouses and you've got those metal great rail things across the walls. Oh, the drop ceiling. Yeah, they's cool. Like the only reason I'm able to work from home or participate in anything to do with the interwebs is because of that thing in the wall. So the idea of even where the hell would I put something to run all day? It like if I try to use my phone right now on Wi-Fi, the door that is closed stops the phone really Martin lives in a Faraday. Maybe that's a feature. That could be a feature. It could be a feature, yeah. Like if you wanted to split yourself from reality and digital existence. So anyway, it all works. I have no it it actually is totally reliable in here because of that one little thing. But the idea of adding some self-hosting utopian idea would turn into a nightmare No, I don't think I would want to use anything hosted from your office. So I don't know where it would go. It just wouldn't work. True. Okay. I'm trying to imagine it was transplanted to your your house, Martin. How long do you think you would last before he went absolutely crazy? Uh oh I'm drilling holes day one. Day one holes are being drilled. There you go. There's your answer. And also I can don't I condone the the the ceiling uh gateway things for for cables. That that would be a good look, I think. Really? Okay. Um see how that goes. Come in and we'll have that discussion. Martin, you you could name your house you could name your house Silicon gongy. Ooh. Perfect. I think I think you could sell it. All of the ideas you're sharing work beautifully in this uh vacuum of a podcast recording, applied to real life with my family, and here we'll see how that goes. I don't know. I think the kids would love Rainbow Cat Six going across the ceiling. Who wouldn't want that? Alright Andrew. Someone's been counter chatting you. Yeah. I went to the shop. How's that work? Do they know that's what it's called? What the shop? They work there, so I hope so. Yeah. No. Do they know that they're counter chatting? Oh no, I don't think so. So I was there with my son. Um, okay. And so we And look, sorry, just to interrupt, just for any newer listeners who are like, what the hell are these three guys talking about? CounterChat is a segment where we talk about some of the awkward or more amusing situations that might have occurred in any kind of server situ So let's say I go into a I don't know kebab shop, let's say. And at the end of my meal, I go and speak to the person that that owns the shop. And they at the end of this conversation reach out a hand and I go to to meet that hand with a handshake thinking we've now formed a bond, but in reality, they just wanted the uh the little basket with my paper trash in it. They were just trying to be helpful. So just like just to give everybody like an idea of like what this would be theor hypothetically. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I'm sure one of us has done that. I mean, first it was just me talking too much at the counter, but then someone, you know, just wanted more. He wanted to go further than that. Anyway, would that person please continue with this story? Yeah. Um so I was buying a couple of items, some sausage rolls, frozen sausage rolls for a bit of a morning tea. And uh couple of liters of milk. Yeah. Pretty straightforward purchase. Hm. Pay went to pay, tap and go, as we all do in Australia now for everything, because it streamlines the process. Sure. And about to walk out. But she hold she says, Oh, hey, is that your son? I'm like, yeah. And then she proceeds talked to how how tall he is. And you know, and is he having a good day? And then she starts talking about when her son was also of a a taller size and she she said a taller size, that's weird. That is weird, but we'll go with it. And she started talking about how the challenge of when kids appear older than what they are, because they are big, people start to presume that they can are more capable or competent than what they actually are because people think they're older, but they're just little kids. Or tell them their marital problems on a chair lift. Yeah. As I experienced as a teenager. Exactly. You never know what's gonna happen. Um and then we talked about a couple of other I it was a couple of weeks ago now. It was just after we recorded our last show, actually. So my memory is fading now, but it was a long conversation. She was lovely, don't get me wrong. It was it she was happy and engaging. I think really she just had a really boring day and just needed a chat. And as much as I wanted to just move on with my day, I had to honor the moment. So I had to stay there and chat. It was probably three or four minutes counter chat after I'd paid. You know, my my frozen sausage rolls were defrosting before my very eyes. Benji is just sitting standing there going What's this all about? The only way we were able to escape the counter chat was when another customer came through that had to be served. So we were able to escape. We walked out and Benji just said, I thought we were never gonna get out of there. So I just found it interesting that I I wasn't even in the mood for a counter chat, but I had to embrace it because you have to honor the counter chat even when it's a reverse counter chat. And it's just something I I put to both of you, and Jason, I know you're not a big fan of counter chat, but just be open to the idea that somebody may want to counter chat you. Yeah, someone's desperate for attention. Yeah. Yeah. When you walk through the world, you might not want to initiate it 'cause I know you're a bit shy and reserved in those environments, but be willing to embrace it if it's placed upon you. I didn't think we were ever gonna get out of this conversation. This one right now. Right now, yeah. Now I'm gonna follow you up with a reverse counter chat with another reverse situation. Wow. It's like bizarro world over there. So you'll remember Bruce from the last episode. Hello, Bruce. Yes, I'm f we're familiar we're familiar with his work. Yep. Yep. So wait, c can you re can you just remind was that Bruce was a was a fan of Mart was a Martin he was part of Martin's fan club, right? Is that what it was? Or No, no, no, don't drag me into this. It's Andrew's imaginary friend. That's what you accused Andrew of last episode. Right. Yes. Okay. Sorry. Go ahead. But we don't actually know if he's real. It's just because Andrew has his audience. Remember, it's Andrew's audience. It's his audience. Okay. I I'm doing the finger quotes of Andrew's friend. So last night I went out to see a jazz performance. It was fantastic. Troy Roberts. Check him out. Um really impressive performance. But joining us was not Bruce, but Bruce's other half Bruce's reverse side, Emma, came to the jazz show. Wow. I haven't heard reverse side before. You're talking about like Professor Quirrell from Philosophers or Sorcerer's Stone, like the back of his head is this woman. But um Emma was talking about the show. It's all in his mind, so it can be whatever you want. So because we were at a show, we're we were at a show in a in a a relatively small jazz club. Mm-hmm. And we're talking about when does it can Emma asked this question, so I'm gonna put it to you guys in a reverse Bruce situation. Ooh. Thanks, Emma. This is so confusing. This is like the multiverse. When does a performance transition from busking to a performance? Do you mean like a a paid performance? Well, right. So when is it 'cause it was a small club. It was a full crowd, it was enough. But also you some buskers would get a bigger crowd than that. So what's what's the determination between is it just the location? Is it that you're out what if you have an outdoor concert? Is that busking? 'Cause it was just an interesting thought experiment. Do you want someone to answer first or we're just jumping in here? Jason? Yeah. You don't even have to give an answer. It's just a thought experiment. I've probably it probably made more sense when we were in the jazz club and I'd had wine. Well so that was my first question was what was the situation when this conversation was happening? We now know. That answer is a lot. Andrews on the piss. Yep. If you are paying for a ticket to see a said thing and or No, I think just paying for a ticket. Like if there was a ticket exchange happening, that is a show. There was a ticket exchange. But then what if you what if it was just an open door? Or if there's a two drink minimum? Ah, two drink minimum. I see what you're saying. Yeah. Okay. To me, look, I think busking is generally something that happens in an open public space, often outdoors, but it doesn't have to be. Generally there will be some sort of receptacle, whether it's the person's guitar case or a hat or a can or something that people can choose to throw money into. And I think that's an important part because we have as part of our mall in the middle of you know Willongong CBD, you'll see buskers there, but you'll also see people kind of on the amphitheatre stage which can be used for live concerts and events, which you're not paying for, right? But they don't have something in front of them. So I think busking is generally something that happens outside or in a public space, but you also need the thing in front of yourself to suggest, hey, give me some money if you think this is worthwhile. I think it's a He did try and sell as a CD. Yeah, no. I don't know. There's usually m there's merch at shows usually. So I don't Yeah. This is sounding like a like a show or a planned event. Yeah. Follow up question how much did you pay for the ticket to this show that was definitely not busking? Uh I can't remember, but I think it was probably about forty bucks. There you go. That was not busking. That's not busking. No, busking is an optional donation. Really good, really good performance. Oh my goodness, they were so good. So good. And I think all jazz clubs are small by definition. It would suck. Yeah. No. Yeah, they're not really arena shows. No, it was great though. Check him out. If it's big, it's not jazz. He's from Perth as well. This guy is famous. He plays in New York now most of the time. But he's from Perth. He really is. Another one. So he's a personality. Yep. He's he's gone to the big apple, huh? Yep. From the big what do you have that's big there? Do you have the big potato? No. What's the big thing over there? Do you have a big thing? There's nothing big. Cactus. There's a cactus in the city. The fact that it's half the city. Who is the big thing? Martin has the big potato? All the big things are like on the east coast. I think. I'm just making that up. I I'm I'm used to making claims. Oh we have a big we have a big ram. We have a big ram in Wajin. Wow. See? From well we have the big merino. Oh it's very similar. From the big ram to the big apple. Just before we leave this topic, my last thing for this topic, I want to know, Andrew, given that you said that there was merch available and you could choose to spend more in attending this live beformance, did you open your Perth? To spend money. Oh my goodness. As in Perth. No Perth. I didn't actually. Because you know what? He was selling a CD. And I literally was like I would be happy to have the music but I don't want it on CD format because I have no what would I do with it? I've got nowhere to stick it. You you would rather he gets you know like a millionth of a cent through Spotify. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well I'm I'm I'd rather give him like twenty bucks. Yeah. Twenty bucks. I can't deal with a C D. I got nothing that would take it. Oh you're gonna ask something, Jason? You you look like you had your hand raised. I was. So okay, wait. You said like fifty things there. Uh first of all, you get the CD and you have the joy of re-encoding it to FLAC, because that's what everyone's favorite pastime is. Of course. Yeah. And then the other thing that I wanted to ask you being you were at a live musical event, um I was uh I don't remember when this I was bitching to Martin about this recently. I forget where whether it was text or I don't know where it was. Somewhere. But anyway, you're at a live event. Oh yeah. You said there's there was a lot of people there for a small venue because it was a small because it was jazz had to be small. Um how like if let's say percentage wise of the people in your area were not giving any amount of attention to what was happening and just staring at their phone recording the damn thing the whole time. Was that a high percentage or low percentage? I was very impressed. I saw maybe two people recording and those recordings were prop were just moments of time recordings. Wow. Okay. A little quickie just a second maybe or less. Just a as a memento of the event. Got it. Um yeah, I was really super impressed. It was very um yeah. Good. Not two and a half hours of shaky shaky material crowd. I was impressed. That's good. That's good. Now I've got one last basketball, fellas. Oh, what do you got? App corner. What size basketball is this a size eight, seven? What do we actually Is that the same there? Yeah, yeah, yeah. We got the same. We got the same basketball sizes? Size seven is the European shoe sizes and all that stuff. Oh man, I was worried. Yeah, we use US shoe sizes. It's the only one I can trust. What's a y European that's like forty eight or something? What even is that? Um Don't even pretend that any of them are consistent. It doesn't make any sense. You go to a shot and like, oh, this is a US nine, or this is a US ten, they look the same. Yeah, oh it depends on the brand. Well what's the point? Anyway, basketball. Just use a measurement. You can measure a foot with centimeters. Just do that. Oh, is this for a wide foot or a narrow foot? But the number's the same. Except if you're using anyway, I'm on a shoes. I did buy shoes the other day. I had to buy shoes the other day and literally because my size, my shoe is size fourteen wide. Jeez. You know what? You know where you know the range you have to choose from when you're size fourteen wide? It's like they send you over to the back corner of like the leftover stock. There's like three different shoes you can choose. Oh the sideshow bob sections. Yes. Yeah it's like the like the the ogre shoes. They're like, oh you're you go to the ogre section where there's two pairs. Andrew steps on three rakes on the way. Anyway, app. So this this And then he grunts, he's just like oh nee choo. So based you see you're laughing, right? But you're sounding like caveman. A little caveman. And I like the fact, and I was gonna say it's not a basketball, it'd be a basket rock. This is a perfect segue into the app that One Prime Plus member Super Davey recommended. And I have since downloaded to check it out. Wait, a what member? One prone plus. What I'm not I'm not familiar with that. Could you could you expand on that a little bit and let me know what the features and benefits are. And they get all the stuff. They get extra shows. They get access to a a private signal conversation. They get up for that. Other things, I think. Other things. It's not not nothing. Look, I just pulled up the website, actually. I just pulled up the website, and sure enough it says one prime plus you get other things You get to ho you get to host a RSS server for me. That's actually what it's that's the tagline. Anyway, what's the app? Features and benefits. Okay, yeah, sorry. App corner. What is the app? It's a wellness app and it's called Grug. Now, when I first heard the title of this app, I thought I remember Grug. Do you remember Grug? It's a shit children's book that people pretend is good. A shit children's book that people think is good. Can that be a title? Yeah. They pretend. Oh Grug, I love Grug. Then you read it and you go, What is this? This isn't I had fond memories of Grug. But then yes, when I looked at the Grug books, I was like, this is garbage. It's a little man that looks like a tree. Okay. This app this app is not that. And that's what threw me. Oh, thank goodness. Because I read I saw this and I was like, what's Super Davey up to? He can't be recommending the app version. So this is better. This is better.
