Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:32Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:34Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:35Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:38Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:41Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. Of this bonus episode,
- 0:44Speaker 1: we are discussing incredible stories of rock and roll redemption,
- 0:49Speaker 1: everybody from Tina Turner to Ozzy Osbourne, Frank Sinatra, and
- 0:52Speaker 1: you know everyone in between. In the exclusive portion of
- 0:54Speaker 1: this after Party, we dive into some of the weirdest
- 0:57Speaker 1: number one songs in New Year's music history, getting into
- 1:02Speaker 1: your emails, comments, dms, and as always a whole lot
- 1:06Speaker 1: of rosie. This is the podcast for the musically obsessed,
- 1:08Speaker 1: the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know that the best
- 1:10Speaker 1: history is the history that gets buried. Disgrace Land is
- 1:13Speaker 1: where I tell the stories they didn't want to told.
- 1:15Speaker 1: The kind you'll end up telling someone else. All right,
- 1:17Speaker 1: disc goes, let's get into it, all right, it's officially
- 1:31Speaker 1: the new year, so happy New Year. I hope twenty
- 1:35Speaker 1: twenty six is everything that you want it to be.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I love this time of year. For me, at least,
- 1:41Speaker 1: there's always so much hope and you can feel it.
- 1:45Speaker 1: You can feel it in the area, you can feel
- 1:47Speaker 1: it with your family hopefully, you can feel it with
- 1:51Speaker 1: the people you work with ideally, and you know, for me,
- 1:56Speaker 1: hope is it's like a drug. I mean, what else
- 1:59Speaker 1: are we doing here? Hoping for something, something more, something better,
- 2:05Speaker 1: hoping to become better versions of ourselves. And you know,
- 2:11Speaker 1: maybe I think that way because I'm creative and I'm
- 2:13Speaker 1: constantly trying to create something different and new and say
- 2:16Speaker 1: things and new and in different ways, say things that
- 2:22Speaker 1: with more clarity, say things above familiar subjects with unique
- 2:28Speaker 1: perspective that I haven't necessarily shared before. So I'm always
- 2:32Speaker 1: thinking about this type of stuff, and hope is a
- 2:34Speaker 1: big component to that thinking. And for artists, I feel like,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you know, if you know, hope is more than a drugs,
- 2:41Speaker 1: It's like oxygen. The hope that the new year brings
- 2:46Speaker 1: can be a catalyst for creative change, like I mentioned,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and as we look at music history, that change for
- 2:54Speaker 1: a lot of rock stars meant redemption, and that redemption
- 2:59Speaker 1: lends itself to incredible storytelling. Stories of redemption that are
- 3:06Speaker 1: so dramatic that if you handed them in as Hollywood scripts,
- 3:11Speaker 1: Hollywood be like, no, this is too fantastical. This goes
- 3:16Speaker 1: out of the bounds of reality. Let's look at Ozzy Osbourne.
- 3:19Speaker 1: April nineteen seventy nine, Ozzy Osbourne was kicked out of
- 3:22Speaker 1: the band that he co founded, Black Sabbath, and he
- 3:25Speaker 1: spent the next few months hold up in a hotel
- 3:30Speaker 1: room in Hollywood, spending I think he had like almost
- 3:33Speaker 1: one hundred thousand dollars as part of a buyout that
- 3:36Speaker 1: he got from the band, and he used it all
- 3:38Speaker 1: on drugs, and he just did a bunch of cocaine
- 3:41Speaker 1: while he was in that hotel room locking his wounds.
- 3:44Speaker 1: But by the end of the year, by the end
- 3:46Speaker 1: of nineteen seventy nine, for Ozzy Osbourne, hope had overcome despair.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Ozzie had a new band and a new album in
- 3:54Speaker 1: the works, Blizzard of Oz. Ozzie hoped that Blizzard of
- 3:59Speaker 1: Oz would launch his solo career in that next year,
- 4:02Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty, and that's exactly what happened. When nineteen
- 4:05Speaker 1: eighty rolled around. Blizzard of Oz went on to sell
- 4:09Speaker 1: well like Cocaine, which is to say it sold very well.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Blizzard of Oz went platinum without the help of a
- 4:15Speaker 1: radio single, but on the back of Ozzy Osbourne's hope
- 4:20Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, Ozzy Osborne wakes up in
- 4:22Speaker 1: a new decade and he's more popular than the band
- 4:25Speaker 1: that he was just kicked out of. Incredible story of
- 4:30Speaker 1: just you know, low's and highs and highs and lows
- 4:33Speaker 1: and ultimately redemption in the end. Then it doesn't end here, obviously,
- 4:37Speaker 1: Ozzy's story goes on and on and on, and there's
- 4:40Speaker 1: more highs and lows and including the point where he
- 4:43Speaker 1: almost murders his wife and he manages to somehow come
- 4:46Speaker 1: back from that fantastic storytelling, like I said, redemption. At
- 4:50Speaker 1: the end of nineteen eighty seven, here's another one. Red
- 4:52Speaker 1: Hot Chili Peppers Anthony Keiatis, their front man, decided that
- 4:56Speaker 1: by eighty seven it was time that he and his
- 4:58Speaker 1: band's guitarists Hello Slovak, face their addiction to Heroin because
- 5:05Speaker 1: their life's worked to this point. The band that they
- 5:08Speaker 1: were in, the band that they loved, the Chili Peppers.
- 5:10Speaker 1: The existence of that band was on the line. And
- 5:13Speaker 1: their latest album in nineteen eighty seven, Uplift Mofo Party Plan,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and it entered the Billboard two hundred. So now these
- 5:20Speaker 1: guys they've got some they've got stakes to their story.
- 5:23Speaker 1: They've got a real chance to break through as a band.
- 5:29Speaker 1: So Anthony in helll At the end of nineteen eighty seven,
- 5:32Speaker 1: they decided to give up Heroin together before touring Europe
- 5:37Speaker 1: in support of their new record, uplif Mofo Party Plan.
- 5:42Speaker 1: They're going to go on tour in January of nineteen
- 5:44Speaker 1: eighty eight, so you know, right in the new year, right,
- 5:48Speaker 1: giving up Heroin for the new year. That's the plan. Okay, Now,
- 5:51Speaker 1: giving up Heroin worked for Anthony Keatis, but it did
- 5:54Speaker 1: not work for Hello. He relapsed on the road in Europe,
- 5:57Speaker 1: was kicked out of the band briefly while they were
- 5:59Speaker 1: on tour, and then asked to rejoin to finish the tour.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And that's what happened. Chili Peppers returned to the States
- 6:08Speaker 1: and they were a mess and they all go their
- 6:11Speaker 1: separate ways, and then they start to resurface, but they
- 6:16Speaker 1: can't find Hello. Turns out his body was found in
- 6:21Speaker 1: his Hollywood apartment on June twenty fifth, nineteen eighty eight.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Now Here we are at the bottom, the lowest of
- 6:30Speaker 1: the low The thing that Anthony Keatis and the rest
- 6:33Speaker 1: of his band feared the most had happened. One of
- 6:37Speaker 1: the Red Hot Chili Peppers had died of a heroin overdose.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Now as nineteen eighty eight progressed, the loss of Hello Slovak,
- 6:46Speaker 1: their guitar player, proved almost to be too much for
- 6:50Speaker 1: their band. Drummer Jack Irons quit, saying that he didn't
- 6:54Speaker 1: want to be part of something that could kill him
- 6:57Speaker 1: or his friends. New drummer and a new gud Harris,
- 7:00Speaker 1: briefly joined the band, but by the end of nineteen
- 7:02Speaker 1: eighty eight, they were both replaced by Chad Smith and
- 7:06Speaker 1: John Frusciante. I was nineteen eighty eight became nineteen eighty nine.
- 7:11Speaker 1: The new Red Hot Chili Peppers were readying themselves to
- 7:15Speaker 1: start January pre production for what would become their classic album,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Mother's Milk. And they're starting this process with fifty percent
- 7:26Speaker 1: new band Okay, not an easy thing to do, not
- 7:30Speaker 1: at all. I don't care if your bass player is
- 7:32Speaker 1: named Flee. It's really hard to replace. They were my
- 7:35Speaker 1: one member, two members, especially a drummer and a lead
- 7:38Speaker 1: guitar player. I mean, come on, it's not like they're
- 7:39Speaker 1: just slotting in a well, not like you could replace.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I was gonna say slot in a bass player, but
- 7:44Speaker 1: I guess Flee is the one guy you absolutely could
- 7:46Speaker 1: not replace in the Chili Peppers. That's all beside the
- 7:50Speaker 1: point they're going in in January of nineteen eighty nine,
- 7:54Speaker 1: they're going into pre production for Mother's Milk. Whatever their
- 7:58Speaker 1: hopes were, you you have to think, first and foremost,
- 8:02Speaker 1: it was the hope that they didn't suck. Okay, you
- 8:04Speaker 1: have to think that anything beyond that was a win.
- 8:08Speaker 1: But now we have hindsight, and we have biographies, autobiographies,
- 8:12Speaker 1: excuse me, and we know that Anthony Quatus and the
- 8:16Speaker 1: rest of the Red Hot Chili Peppers were hoping for
- 8:18Speaker 1: more than to just not suck. Okay, Uplift MOFO Party
- 8:24Speaker 1: Plan was a Billboard charting album. They wanted their next record,
- 8:28Speaker 1: Mother's Milk, to be a mainstream breakthrough, which is not
- 8:33Speaker 1: easy for any band, never mind a band that's replacing
- 8:35Speaker 1: fifty percent of its members. And that's what they were
- 8:38Speaker 1: hoping for, and that's exactly what happened. Mother's Milk went
- 8:44Speaker 1: gold and set the stage for what would become the
- 8:47Speaker 1: band's not just a hit record, but a culture defining
- 8:51Speaker 1: moment when they released the follow up to Mother's Milk
- 8:54Speaker 1: a few years later with Blood Sugar, Sex Magic, an
- 8:58Speaker 1: album that it was everywhere when it was released, all
- 9:02Speaker 1: over MTV, all over the radio. It was the song
- 9:06Speaker 1: for my senior hop. It was just an explosive record.
- 9:09Speaker 1: People who had no idea about alternative music knew or
- 9:14Speaker 1: had heard at least of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
- 9:18Speaker 1: They became a household name, and just a few years
- 9:22Speaker 1: prior to that, on the verge of nineteen eighty nine,
- 9:27Speaker 1: they were basically dead in the water. Hope went to work,
- 9:32Speaker 1: just like it did in July nineteen seventy six, when
- 9:35Speaker 1: Anime Bullock left her abusive husband after a final violent altercation.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Anime had only thirty six cents to her name when
- 9:46Speaker 1: she left her husband. She didn't seek money in the
- 9:48Speaker 1: divorce from her rock star husband, just the right to
- 9:51Speaker 1: continue to use her stage name Tina Turner, and she
- 9:56Speaker 1: won that right, and for the next six New Year's eves,
- 10:00Speaker 1: Tina Turner plied her craft on crummy stages in third
- 10:04Speaker 1: and fourth rate nightclubs, lounges and cabarets, fighting her way
- 10:08Speaker 1: back to what she hoped would be a respectable career
- 10:12Speaker 1: in entertainment. And on December thirty first, nineteen eighty three,
- 10:16Speaker 1: Tina Turner watched herself in a pre taped performance on
- 10:20Speaker 1: Barcelona television, performing with a new look, heavily teased hair bangs,
- 10:25Speaker 1: big hoop earrings, trademark legs for days, and she thought
- 10:29Speaker 1: about the future. She thought about the hope that she
- 10:32Speaker 1: had for a new album that she'd begun production on
- 10:36Speaker 1: for Capitol Records, a new record that she hoped would
- 10:40Speaker 1: re establish her as an entertaining force in her own right,
- 10:44Speaker 1: without her abusive husband, like Turner, backing her. Tina Turner
- 10:49Speaker 1: hoped that this record would make her own name Tina
- 10:53Speaker 1: ring out. Private Dancer was released in the spring of
- 10:57Speaker 1: nineteen eighty four. The album was instantly a doored by critics,
- 11:01Speaker 1: its singles played endlessly by FM radio, It's videos rotated
- 11:06Speaker 1: heavily by MTV, and it sold millions and millions of copies.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Tina Turner, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, like Ozzy Osbourne,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and like so many other artists we've covered in disgrace
- 11:20Speaker 1: that Johnny Cash, Iggy Pop, Ac, DC, Frank Sinatra. They
- 11:26Speaker 1: were down and nearly out, their careers seemingly over, but
- 11:31Speaker 1: we're not. For this crucial ingredient that seems to be
- 11:36Speaker 1: in abundance this time of year. Hope. Hope makes for
- 11:43Speaker 1: great storytelling. Hope makes for a lot of great things.
- 11:49Speaker 1: It's hard, it's hard to lift them all without sounding
- 11:52Speaker 1: like a total fucking cheese ball, but it's part of
- 11:57Speaker 1: what gets us up in the morning and gets us going,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and it comes into focus for me at least, and
- 12:03Speaker 1: you know, for a lot of the artists we cover
- 12:05Speaker 1: around this time of year. I hope it does for
- 12:07Speaker 1: you as well. I hope you guys are having a
- 12:10Speaker 1: great holiday season. I hope you're all gearing up to
- 12:13Speaker 1: achieve whatever it is you want to achieve this year,
- 12:15Speaker 1: whether it's global superstardom like Tina Turner, or perhaps something
- 12:19Speaker 1: more modest, like a few more quiet nights at home
- 12:21Speaker 1: with your family, perhaps some peace of mind. Whatever it is,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I hope you get it, and I hope to keep
- 12:26Speaker 1: talking to you here in Disgraceland every week. We had
- 12:30Speaker 1: a lot of great stories planned for you guys in
- 12:31Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, in addition to these weekly after party episodes.
- 12:36Speaker 1: One thing that we're going to start doing beginning next
- 12:38Speaker 1: week here in Disgraceland is laying out our new full
- 12:43Speaker 1: episodes for you guys with a little bit more information
- 12:47Speaker 1: and a little bit more intentionality. Now, one of the
- 12:51Speaker 1: things that's changed in Disgraceland over the last few years
- 12:55Speaker 1: is that Disgraceland the show used to be much more
- 12:59Speaker 1: of a seasonal show, where we release twelve weekly episodes
- 13:04Speaker 1: seasonally and then take a bunch of weeks off before
- 13:07Speaker 1: releasing a new season. Now, the cool thing about this was,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, in addition to having you know, a whole
- 13:16Speaker 1: lot less work to do, but that's you know, I'm
- 13:18Speaker 1: only kidding about that. The cool thing was as a
- 13:20Speaker 1: result of this schedule where we were sort of releasing
- 13:26Speaker 1: seasons in batches. When these batched releases would happen, it
- 13:31Speaker 1: would create these moments of excitement around discovering which artists
- 13:36Speaker 1: we'd all be digging into at the same time, and
- 13:39Speaker 1: now that we've published episodes every week, we've lost those
- 13:42Speaker 1: big reveals. So what I'm gonna start doing is once
- 13:46Speaker 1: every three or four months, I'm gonna pop into the
- 13:49Speaker 1: feed with a reveal episode, so to speak, a behind
- 13:52Speaker 1: the scenes episode. We're gonna talk about what artists are
- 13:55Speaker 1: coming over the next twelve or so weeks, like coming immediately,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and we're gonna give you guys insight into those stories,
- 14:01Speaker 1: the crimes, the myths, the transgressions, all of it. And
- 14:05Speaker 1: we're gonna give, like I said, a bit of behind
- 14:07Speaker 1: the scenes peak at how these stories are chosen and
- 14:11Speaker 1: how they're being put together in real time. What we're
- 14:15Speaker 1: doing for research, what we're planning on doing for music,
- 14:17Speaker 1: Which parts of the stories we're leaning into, Which parts
- 14:20Speaker 1: of the stories we're leaving on the table. I'm also
- 14:23Speaker 1: doing this in part because what we've got going on
- 14:25Speaker 1: in Patreon for twenty twenty six. If you're in on
- 14:30Speaker 1: the ten dollars tier, if you're a ten dollars tier
- 14:33Speaker 1: all access member in Patreon, you're gonna have the ability
- 14:38Speaker 1: to meet with Zeth and I perhaps Matt as well,
- 14:41Speaker 1: to help determine and choose which artists that we're going
- 14:44Speaker 1: to cover, and these new behind the scenes episodes like
- 14:47Speaker 1: the one you're gonna get next week, they're going to
- 14:49Speaker 1: take on more weight in relevance. You're gonna get to hear.
- 14:52Speaker 1: If you're a ten dollars Patreon, you're gonna get to hear.
- 14:55Speaker 1: So the results of your thinking and your choices coming
- 14:57Speaker 1: to life right alongside are thinking. So that's all that's
- 15:02Speaker 1: all happening. It's all happening in twenty twenty six. That
- 15:05Speaker 1: behind the scenes episode that the seasonal reveal is coming
- 15:08Speaker 1: your way next week, and then right after that we
- 15:11Speaker 1: start the new year with our brand new episode on
- 15:15Speaker 1: Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls and the mystery
- 15:19Speaker 1: surrounding his death. And from there we're going to get
- 15:23Speaker 1: into brand new episodes. I'm not going to burn them
- 15:26Speaker 1: all now, you're gonna have to wait till next week
- 15:28Speaker 1: to hear which ones we're coming at you with. But
- 15:30Speaker 1: I'm very very excited. You know, we did rely heavily
- 15:35Speaker 1: on the suggestions that you guys have made over the
- 15:38Speaker 1: past few months just throughout the year. Really here in
- 15:43Speaker 1: the after party, with your your voicemails and your texts,
- 15:46Speaker 1: emails of course, DMS, we listen. We try to incorporate
- 15:50Speaker 1: a bunch of your suggestions, a bunch of new female
- 15:53Speaker 1: artists as well that I'm really excited about. So that's
- 15:56Speaker 1: all coming. It's all coming next week. You're going to
- 15:57Speaker 1: hear all about that. In the meantime, we are rewinding
- 16:01Speaker 1: this week for New Year's with Hank Williams, who famously
- 16:05Speaker 1: died on New Year's Day nineteen fifty three, so obviously
- 16:09Speaker 1: there's some relevance there. More on New Year's related music
- 16:13Speaker 1: in the exclusive section of this after party, where I'm
- 16:16Speaker 1: going to be reviewing some of the stranger number one
- 16:18Speaker 1: songs from New Year's Day, going back through music history.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Got to be an all access member to cop that, though,
- 16:23Speaker 1: go to disgrace lampod dot com to sign up in
- 16:25Speaker 1: unlock exclusive content like the content you're going to get
- 16:28Speaker 1: later in the after party here, like our mini episodes,
- 16:31Speaker 1: and you're also going to get add free listening and
- 16:34Speaker 1: access to our disgrace and community chat on Patreon. Membership
- 16:37Speaker 1: start for as little as a dollar per month. That's
- 16:41Speaker 1: all at disgracelampod dot com to sign up.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I'll be back right.
- 16:44Speaker 1: After this with your voicemails, text, dms and more. All right,
- 17:06Speaker 1: we are back, Happy New Year again, Happy holidays, Merry Christmas.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Speaking of Christmas, I got some incredible gifts from my
- 17:15Speaker 1: family this year. Small gifts, really, but if you looked
- 17:20Speaker 1: at the books that I received, and this will sort
- 17:23Speaker 1: of serve as a recommendation section here impromptu, you can
- 17:27Speaker 1: tell my family really gets me, as they should. I
- 17:34Speaker 1: got the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood book by
- 17:36Speaker 1: Jay Glenny, which is just fantastic. It's a tome of
- 17:42Speaker 1: these incredible images and stories from the making of Quentin
- 17:49Speaker 1: Tarantino's ninth and what looks like to be his final film.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I know what I just said here. If you're a
- 17:56Speaker 1: fan of Tarantino, you're a fan of that movie, it says,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and that should be enough. But I can't put into
- 18:03Speaker 1: words how exhilarating this book is. The stories are incredible
- 18:08Speaker 1: and the pictures are equally incredible. Just just a wonderful,
- 18:14Speaker 1: wonderful gift. It was the only thing I asked for
- 18:16Speaker 1: my wife came through Jay glennies Once Upon a Time
- 18:18Speaker 1: in Hollywood. I also received a collection of Joan Didion books.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Very cool, very cool. As I start to consider you know,
- 18:29Speaker 1: how do I? You know, how do I?
- 18:32Speaker 3: What if?
- 18:32Speaker 1: I want to do some music history essays? You know
- 18:35Speaker 1: what about that? And the Joan Didion stuff is sort
- 18:38Speaker 1: of a perfect guide. Bread of Angels by Patti Smith,
- 18:43Speaker 1: Dirtbag Massachusetts by Isaac Fitzgerald. My son got me The
- 18:49Speaker 1: Fall of Egypt in the Rise of Rome, and he
- 18:52Speaker 1: also got me Blood and Thunder, which is a book
- 18:55Speaker 1: on the settling of the American West, which has been
- 18:58Speaker 1: a recent fascination of mine. My wife got me Evan
- 19:02Speaker 1: Dando's Rumors of my Demise, so I guess there's going
- 19:06Speaker 1: to be an Evan Dando episode coming to you in
- 19:08Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. And I get a book on the
- 19:11Speaker 1: Eucharist as well, which I'm pretty excited to read. So
- 19:15Speaker 1: some great books there for records. Let's see what I got.
- 19:19Speaker 1: This is stack here. My aunt Tracy got me Rufus
- 19:25Speaker 1: and Chaka Khan Live, which I didn't know I needed,
- 19:30Speaker 1: but I have it, and I'm excited. I got my
- 19:32Speaker 1: wife Jimmy World's Bleed American on vinyl. That's here in
- 19:35Speaker 1: the stack. I also found this fantastic French pressing of
- 19:39Speaker 1: a Florida punk rock compilation from the sixties, so it's
- 19:43Speaker 1: like proto punk, pre punk, but it's called Florida Punk
- 19:48Speaker 1: and it is the Mods, Esquires, Shy Guys, Tasmanians, Tallula Babies,
- 19:54Speaker 1: Palace Guards, Mark Markham and the Plastic Blues Band. This
- 19:58Speaker 1: looks incredible. Got this for my wife, but you know, hey,
- 20:01Speaker 1: kind of for me as well. Also got my wife
- 20:05Speaker 1: the Phoenix album Wolfgang Amedeis Phoenix on Vinyl. My son
- 20:11Speaker 1: got her Fashion Nugget by Cake on Vinyl. I received
- 20:15Speaker 1: the new Lemonheads record Love Chant, which I like the
- 20:18Speaker 1: singles I've heard of this album. My friends aren't so
- 20:21Speaker 1: psyched on this, at least some of my friends that
- 20:23Speaker 1: I've spoken to about this, but I think that song
- 20:26Speaker 1: deep End is incredible one with jam Maskis, said Julian Hetfield. Anyways,
- 20:30Speaker 1: happy to have that on record. I also received the
- 20:33Speaker 1: original Spinal Tap album are Ip rob Reiner. I got
- 20:38Speaker 1: the Ricky Lee Jones record Chuck E's in Love Pumped
- 20:41Speaker 1: about that great song. And a Susan Tedesky album, which
- 20:46Speaker 1: I don't know if that's for me or for my son.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I think it's for my son. Oh E Pete by
- 20:54Speaker 1: Richard Rosenblatt, who I know, by the way, Rosie, what up? Rosie?
- 20:58Speaker 1: Hope you're well? Okay, that was my record hall and
- 21:02Speaker 1: book haull. I guess it was a collective family record
- 21:05Speaker 1: hall for the year, but my book hall for the
- 21:08Speaker 1: year at Christmas, which I'm pretty stoked on. What'd you
- 21:10Speaker 1: guys get? Let me know, be a little impromptu recommendations
- 21:16Speaker 1: back and forth between us. Speaking of back and forth
- 21:19Speaker 1: between us, I want to get into some voicemails, texts
- 21:22Speaker 1: and emails from you guys, just sort of clear the
- 21:26Speaker 1: deck here, no real focus, but just to talk oftentimes.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I'm calling through these responses from you guys in relation
- 21:35Speaker 1: to the question of the week. We really have a
- 21:38Speaker 1: question of the week because we're kind of free wheel
- 21:39Speaker 1: on it here through the New Year's Okay, this one here,
- 21:44Speaker 1: everybody has to listen to this. Okay, this is from
- 21:49Speaker 1: the nine to seventy and nine to seventy eight. I
- 21:52Speaker 1: apologize a ton of text here, and I haven't responded
- 21:57Speaker 1: to any of these texts in text form. I'm guessing
- 22:03Speaker 1: I've read some of them, but I don't know how
- 22:06Speaker 1: I missed a bunch of these if I didn't. But
- 22:08Speaker 1: anyways nine to seven eight, Mark writes in hey, check
- 22:12Speaker 1: it out the beginnings of a playlist containing every song
- 22:16Speaker 1: you mentioned, specifically from Disgrace Sand not the album, that
- 22:19Speaker 1: would be crazy, and not references. I'd probably miss a bunch,
- 22:22Speaker 1: but actual song titles in every episode up to The
- 22:26Speaker 1: Grateful Dead. So far, it's fucking awesome. From Mark in
- 22:31Speaker 1: the nine to seven eight Helltown Baby, Where's helltoun? In
- 22:35Speaker 1: the nine seven eight I feel like I've been there.
- 22:37Speaker 1: But you click on the link and it takes you
- 22:39Speaker 1: to this Apple Music playlist and it is as advertised.
- 22:46Speaker 1: It's I thought this is going to be the number
- 22:49Speaker 1: one songs mentioned. It is more psychotic than that. This
- 22:54Speaker 1: is literally every song mentioned in our episodes. Like when
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'm referencing Hey Jude in a Beatles episode, it's got
- 23:02Speaker 1: hey Jude. When I'm mentioning uh, far Away Eyes by
- 23:07Speaker 1: the Rolling Stones in the Keith Richards episode. That's not
- 23:11Speaker 1: a number one song, but that's in here. Shape of
- 23:13Speaker 1: You by Ed Shearing. That wasn't number one song. That's
- 23:15Speaker 1: in here Straight out of Compton, The Race by Take
- 23:20Speaker 1: Rat Race by Bob Marley and the Whaler say, oh
- 23:22Speaker 1: my god, this is amazing. He stopped loving her today.
- 23:26Speaker 1: George Jones, the old violin, Johnny Paychack, pardon me, I've
- 23:30Speaker 1: got someone to kill Johnny paycheck Yo. Mark, Keep going, dude,
- 23:35Speaker 1: this thing needs to be a living, breathing list. Keep
- 23:39Speaker 1: going with this. I see that you're up to looks
- 23:43Speaker 1: like you've made it to well. You said grateful dead.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'm not seeing evidence of that. I could be wrong.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Definitely into season four here with Icontina Turner, which damn man,
- 23:56Speaker 1: nice work.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Keep going, Mark.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna put this in ya in the Patreon, in
- 24:02Speaker 1: the Patreon chat for everybody, and I'll also put it
- 24:05Speaker 1: out on Instagram when I get a minute. Mark. I
- 24:07Speaker 1: love this. If you guys want to search Mark McKellar
- 24:11Speaker 1: on Apple Music, you'll be able to find this again.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Like I said, I'll share the link. And I hope
- 24:15Speaker 1: that this list of songs mentioned in Disgraceland continues to
- 24:19Speaker 1: grow because it will be a hell of a playlist.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Thank you, Mark. I want to give a special shout
- 24:24Speaker 1: out back to the six one five who last week
- 24:27Speaker 1: texted in and brought up Beautiful Girls as a fantastic
- 24:31Speaker 1: Christmas movie and I can't believe I space on talking
- 24:36Speaker 1: about this over the last few weeks. I went back
- 24:37Speaker 1: and I watched it over the weekend and Beautiful Girls.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Not only is it a great Christmas movie, it has
- 24:45Speaker 1: a fantastic soundtrack. Afghan Whigs are actually in the movie.
- 24:50Speaker 1: It's just filled with great classic rock and really, you
- 24:54Speaker 1: know this, this movie reminds me so much of my hometown,
- 24:58Speaker 1: of my upbringing, of my friends from home. I just
- 25:01Speaker 1: feel like this in a weird way, the movies about us.
- 25:04Speaker 1: It's set in a fictional town in Massachusetts. It looks
- 25:08Speaker 1: exactly like the town I grew up in, so again
- 25:11Speaker 1: six one five. Thank you so much for that, and
- 25:13Speaker 1: I got Zeth's watching it and talking about it as well.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Cynthia over on Instagram rights in, Hey Jake, Happy twenty

- 25:52Speaker 1: Iron Butterfly bassist, have you ever covered the subject of
- 25:55Speaker 1: the basis from Iron Butterfly who went missing and was
- 25:57Speaker 1: found years later love your show? No, we have not,
- 26:01Speaker 1: but we've had many people mention it and it sounds
- 26:03Speaker 1: like something Don that we need to get into. So
- 26:07Speaker 1: perhaps this is the year. Hope, Hope, Don, Let's hope.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Over on Patreon, Eric writes in Hey, can't figure out
- 26:15Speaker 1: how to post a pick on here, but I finally
- 26:16Speaker 1: came across the interview with Angus Young that I'd read
- 26:19Speaker 1: years ago. Now I'm reading this to you because Eric
- 26:23Speaker 1: is commenting on the ACDC mini episode that we released
- 26:27Speaker 1: a couple weeks back, but a month back, a month
- 26:30Speaker 1: or so, a couple months actually, one of our first
- 26:32Speaker 1: mini episodes about who wrote the lyrics to back in
- 26:36Speaker 1: Black Right? Seems like a cut and dry answered question,
- 26:39Speaker 1: cut and dry answer. This. This is the quote that
- 26:42Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I referenced, I might have referenced in
- 26:45Speaker 1: my in our episode, but Eric dug this up. This
- 26:49Speaker 1: is the quote from Angus Young. Have you ever thought
- 26:51Speaker 1: about quitting? Was the question to Angus, and Angus response,
- 26:55Speaker 1: The only time I did was when Bond Scott died.
- 26:57Speaker 1: We were in doubt about what to do. We had
- 27:00Speaker 1: songs that he had written and we wanted to finish
- 27:03Speaker 1: the songs. We thought it would be a tribute to Bond,
- 27:07Speaker 1: and that album became Back in Black. Come on, man,
- 27:11Speaker 1: I think the evidence is pretty clear. Eric, thank you
- 27:13Speaker 1: for writing in. I missed that a couple days ago
- 27:17Speaker 1: when you posted it, h and I just wanted to
- 27:20Speaker 1: get it in here on record. Guys, you can hit

- 28:57Speaker 1: REALLY i still don't really understand the economics of, it
- 29:00Speaker 1: but YOU i think it's just because it becomes so
- 29:02Speaker 1: competitive and clubs and bars need to have something going.
- 29:06Speaker 1: On SO i would always, play which means EVENTUALLY i
- 29:10Speaker 1: would always hate playing because it was really amateur hour
- 29:16Speaker 1: and you, know everyone's, out everyone's getting.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Hammered everyone's yelling for. Requests probably too.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Everybody's, yelling yelling for requests and that that nen't really
- 29:24Speaker 1: bothered me that, much but you, know there WAS i
- 29:26Speaker 1: do have. This one of the last TIMES i did
- 29:28Speaker 1: it was probably the last TIME i did it was
- 29:30Speaker 1: with a BAND i was in Called Bodega. Girls it
- 29:32Speaker 1: might have been around two thousand and, eight two thousand and,
- 29:36Speaker 1: nine something like. That this is a band that was
- 29:38Speaker 1: never supposed to play, live and we find ourselves playing
- 29:40Speaker 1: A New Year's eve a real party, band, right, yeah
- 29:44Speaker 1: it's a party. Band we played parties like lofts And
- 29:46Speaker 1: bushwick and like oh like literal, parties, okay, yeah, Yeah
- 29:49Speaker 1: and the whole thing was like we're just going to
- 29:51Speaker 1: record and then we'll play like. Parties we won't play.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Clubs but now we're playing this club and it was
- 29:55Speaker 1: like one of these. Clubs it was the club right
- 29:59Speaker 1: across the street From folies and like Downtown, boston like way,
- 30:02Speaker 1: downtown and there was somebody famous DJing i can't remember,
- 30:06Speaker 1: who and we were playing like it was like you,
- 30:09Speaker 1: know three two, one and then we're gonna like start
- 30:11Speaker 1: playing and it's like it's like pat you cannot move
- 30:14Speaker 1: type of.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Thing no, stage we're in.
- 30:16Speaker 1: This like dance dance, cave and this this like college
- 30:21Speaker 1: towny kid. WAS i had my pedal board at the
- 30:24Speaker 1: edge of the stage quote unquote stage and he comes
- 30:26Speaker 1: up with his beer and he's like it's a full
- 30:29Speaker 1: pint glass and he's like he's like, pantomiming like pouring
- 30:33Speaker 1: it over my. Pedals this is before we even, start and.
- 30:37Speaker 2: You throttle them right then and There i'm like setting
- 30:39Speaker 2: my ship.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Up AND i got up AND i got in his,
- 30:41Speaker 1: face and this is like Pure i'm not a tough.
- 30:44Speaker 1: GUY i don't prevent pretend to be a tough, guy
- 30:47Speaker 1: BUT i have had moments of just like pure aggression

- 30:54Speaker 1: up AND i got in his, face AND i very seriously,
- 30:56Speaker 1: said if you do, That i'm going to hit you

- 31:37Speaker 1: kennedy my good friend who's in the, band the singer
- 31:40Speaker 1: he like went at the guy for extra, measure and
- 31:42Speaker 1: it was like three seconds into the first. Song we're
- 31:45Speaker 1: in a full fledged. Fight but we finished the set
