- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everyone?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome in to another episode of DiCecco Daily. Andrew DiCecco,
- 0:15Speaker 2: Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com here. And we are now
- 0:19Speaker 2: just a day away.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Depending on when you listen to it, it may be
- 0:23Speaker 1: the day that.
- 0:24Speaker 2: The Eagles are taking on the Dallas Cowboys. And we
- 0:27Speaker 2: have a final status report for the game. So you
- 0:31Speaker 2: kind of have an idea of what you're going into.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Out for the Eagles, defensive back Michael Carter, abdomen, wide
- 0:36Speaker 2: receiver Devontae Smith, hamstring, outside linebacker Nolan Smith, concussion, wide
- 0:41Speaker 2: receiver Dontavian Wicks, ankle. Questionable, running back Saquon Barkley, hamstring,
- 0:47Speaker 2: cornerback Ja'Corian Bennett, knee, tight end Grant Calcaterra, back. guard
- 0:51Speaker 2: Landon Dickerson, knee pectoral, outside linebacker Jonathan Grenard, ankle, outside
- 0:57Speaker 2: linebacker J.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Lux Hunt, knee, ankle, and tight end Eli Stowers, quad.
- 1:01Speaker 2: For those curious, the Eagles have until Monday at 4 p.m.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Eastern to make their roster decisions, practice squad elevations, and
- 1:09Speaker 2: all those things. And so there's going to be a
- 1:13Speaker 2: little bit of movement here, but what you'll notice is
- 1:16Speaker 2: while the players who aren't dressing on Monday night Yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 2: that might cause some reservations in terms of optimism, but
- 1:26Speaker 2: you'll notice that tight end Dallas.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Goddard is not on the list.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And Dallas Goddard, when we spoke to him in the
- 1:32Speaker 2: locker room on Saturday, he mentioned that it was the
- 1:34Speaker 2: knee injury that he sustained week two in the Titans
- 1:37Speaker 2: game that he sort of aggravated.
- 1:40Speaker 1: There was some inflammation there.
- 1:41Speaker 2: He had to get it to settle down, but he
- 1:43Speaker 2: felt really good moving around. in practice on Saturday, and
- 1:48Speaker 2: so he has no designation. He expects to play.
- 1:51Speaker 1: He said that.
- 1:53Speaker 2: One name that you're probably curious to learn more about
- 1:57Speaker 2: is Jonathan Grenard. Jonathan Grenard, of course, has not played
- 2:00Speaker 2: a ton of snaps for the Eagles. He's been ravaged
- 2:03Speaker 2: by injuries, and he had the pectoral and training camp
- 2:07Speaker 2: that he sustained in the Eagles weight room, and that
- 2:10Speaker 2: carried over for quite some time. Didn't practice at all
- 2:13Speaker 2: in the summer or the spring, and Then you get
- 2:15Speaker 2: into the regular season and he's dealing with a nagging
- 2:18Speaker 2: ankle injury. And so when Grenard spoke to us in
- 2:21Speaker 2: the locker room on Saturday, he indicated that he will
- 2:24Speaker 2: be a game-time decision. Kind of like what was the
- 2:28Speaker 2: case for the Eagles when they were in London.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Not great, but.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I think when you look at the limited status of J.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Lux Hunt, the limited status of Jonathan Grenard. Now, Nolan
- 2:44Speaker 2: Smith isn't playing in this game, but at least it
- 2:47Speaker 2: gives you the potential to have another player in the
- 2:51Speaker 2: mix so that you're not as shorthanded. And you'll also
- 2:54Speaker 2: notice that A.J. Epinesa has no game designation for this.
- 2:59Speaker 2: And so that means that he will be Playing in
- 3:03Speaker 2: this one, that gives you another player to pair with, a.k.a. Ebikady,
- 3:07Speaker 2: Keyshawn James Newby, who I'm expecting to be elevated from
- 3:11Speaker 2: the practice squad.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Not certain, but given.
- 3:14Speaker 2: The shortage at the position, it would make sense to
- 3:16Speaker 2: have him up for the second game.
- 3:18Speaker 1: In a row.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And then maybe you have one of Jonathan Grenard or
- 3:24Speaker 2: Jay Wicks Hunt.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I don't know if you'll have both. It certainly doesn't seem....
- 3:29Speaker 2: I guess, realistic to have both considering what they're dealing with.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And if they do both play, I would imagine they
- 3:35Speaker 2: will be on a pitch count to make sure that
- 3:38Speaker 2: they're not overextending themselves, potentially exposing themselves to worsening their
- 3:44Speaker 2: recovery and lengthening their recovery time.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But Saquon Barkley is questionable.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Now, he, during the week, indicated that he doesn't know
- 3:55Speaker 2: if he'll be available. He didn't want to guarantee it,
- 3:57Speaker 2: but he did say that he feels a lot better.
- 4:02Speaker 2: He's out there.
- 4:03Speaker 1: He's moving around. He was visible this week.
- 4:07Speaker 2: The previous two weeks where he was hurt, he wasn't
- 4:09Speaker 2: around as he was recovering, presumably. And so now you
- 4:14Speaker 2: have a world in which you could have Saquon Barkley.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And if the offensive line is at full strength, or
- 4:20Speaker 2: it could potentially have the look of Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson,
- 4:24Speaker 2: Drew Kendall, Tyler Steen, and Markel Bell.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Now, Landon Dickerson, for him, to be available on Monday night.
- 4:31Speaker 2: The Eagles would have to activate him from injured reserve,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and he would have to be on the 53-man roster.
- 4:37Speaker 1: They have three roster spots available.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It would make sense that if Landon is healthy and
- 4:43Speaker 2: you feel good about where he is, get him up
- 4:46Speaker 2: on the roster and plug him in at left guard.
- 4:48Speaker 2: His power, his physicality should theoretically reset the offensive line,
- 4:54Speaker 2: even if he doesn't have the movement skills that he
- 4:56Speaker 2: once had. Having someone with that kind of power at
- 5:00Speaker 2: the point of attack, and you couple that with what
- 5:03Speaker 2: Jordan Mailata brings at left tackle, all of a sudden,
- 5:07Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley back there, maybe you're able to grind out
- 5:10Speaker 2: some more yards in the ground game because of the
- 5:13Speaker 2: players that you have.
- 5:14Speaker 1: At your disposal.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So that would be the perfect offensive line with what
- 5:19Speaker 2: the Eagles have from a health perspective.
- 5:21Speaker 1: We'll have to wait and see what the future holds
- 5:23Speaker 1: for Landon Dickerson. The same applies for Zach Ertz.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Zach Ertz, of course, is out of his practice squad elevations,
- 5:31Speaker 2: and one would presume that it was probably agreed upon
- 5:38Speaker 2: when Zach Ertz first signed with the Eagles practice squad
- 5:41Speaker 2: that They would eventually get him onto the 53-man roster.
- 5:45Speaker 2: It's hard to imagine that that wouldn't be part of
- 5:47Speaker 2: the plan. But they could certainly use him. The same
- 5:52Speaker 2: applies for Eli Stowers. And so that's why I'm really
- 5:56Speaker 2: curious to see how the Eagles choose to use these spots.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I think Stowers would have a good chance being a rookie.
- 6:02Speaker 2: This is the optimal time to get him out there
- 6:06Speaker 2: and get some NFL experience. The expectations, at least I think,
- 6:12Speaker 2: publicly are minimal and you're already playing with a lot
- 6:18Speaker 2: of backups so why not get your second round pick
- 6:20Speaker 2: some opportunities here to get his feet wet and then
- 6:23Speaker 2: maybe if you go in a little bit of a
- 6:24Speaker 2: run here all of a sudden he's able to it's
- 6:28Speaker 2: not exactly like.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He's starting from square one if it were.
- 6:33Speaker 2: A team in which they got out to a fast
- 6:36Speaker 2: start and expectations were elevated. Yeah, it's hard to see
- 6:40Speaker 2: a path for Eli Stowers.
- 6:43Speaker 1: But right now, given the circumstances, I would imagine so.
- 6:46Speaker 2: They really need an athletic move tight end in the
- 6:50Speaker 2: worst way.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Zach Ertz is not that. He doesn't move well. Certainly
- 6:54Speaker 1: not anymore.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And then Dallas Goddard is someone that, yeah, you have
- 7:00Speaker 2: to be conscious of the knee injury. And wonder if
- 7:03Speaker 2: that's going to continue to creep up at different points
- 7:05Speaker 2: this season. But he's really not a burner. He's not
- 7:08Speaker 2: a twitchy athlete. He's a physically imposing, really strong blocker.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Maybe had some... some elusiveness to his game probably earlier
- 7:19Speaker 2: in his career. He can certainly still stretch the, the,
- 7:22Speaker 2: the seams, but I think it's because of his ability
- 7:26Speaker 2: to just use his frame to his advantage. And he
- 7:29Speaker 2: can move a little bit still, but I don't necessarily view,
- 7:31Speaker 2: he's not in the same category in terms of athleticism
- 7:34Speaker 2: as Eli Stowers.
- 7:35Speaker 1: So that could potentially add another element.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And with as often as the Eagles like to do
- 7:40Speaker 2: these short passes, at least they did last week with
- 7:42Speaker 2: Damian Pierce and Carson Steele and and players like that,
- 7:46Speaker 2: as long as Tanner McKee's there and starting, I think
- 7:50Speaker 2: that Eli Stowers could have a role if he is,
- 7:53Speaker 2: in fact, activated from the 53, from injury reserve to
- 7:58Speaker 2: the 53. But that's kind of where things stand in
- 8:02Speaker 2: terms of injuries. Now, I've said this before. I'm going
- 8:06Speaker 2: to reiterate it. I understand that there's a lot of
- 8:09Speaker 2: public frustration with the health status of a lot of
- 8:12Speaker 2: these Eagles. Devontae Smith has had this hamstring injury for
- 8:17Speaker 2: three months. I think the first time he came up
- 8:19Speaker 2: with it on the injury report was in training camp
- 8:21Speaker 2: on August 4th. And he's tried to come back and
- 8:25Speaker 2: has seemingly suffered setbacks because of it. Jonathan Grenard hasn't
- 8:29Speaker 2: played a lot as a member of the Eagles. The
- 8:32Speaker 2: Eagles traded for him in the offseason. And you look
- 8:36Speaker 2: at some of these other injuries, I understand that there's frustration,
- 8:40Speaker 2: but I don't know that the frustration should be directed
- 8:43Speaker 2: at the players, the ones who are dealing with it
- 8:46Speaker 2: and working to come back.
- 8:49Speaker 1: As a competitive athlete. You want to be out there.
- 8:52Speaker 1: You want to be on the field.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Dallas Goddard said it best on Saturday. You only get
- 8:56Speaker 2: 17 of these things. So you want to be out
- 8:58Speaker 2: there when you can. So sometimes that's just the way
- 9:02Speaker 2: that the cookie crumbles and the Eagles have had a
- 9:05Speaker 2: really good, fortunate string of healthy seasons and, That's not
- 9:10Speaker 2: by accident. That's how they strategize. That's the strength and conditioning.
- 9:15Speaker 2: That's the medical staff. It's the way that Nick Sirianni
- 9:19Speaker 2: structures practices and knowing how to press all the right
- 9:23Speaker 2: buttons and having a really good feel for his team.
- 9:26Speaker 2: All of those things have factored into the Eagles being
- 9:28Speaker 2: one of the more healthy teams in recent years. But
- 9:31Speaker 2: this year, I mean, it's just injuries are popping up
- 9:34Speaker 2: left and right.
- 9:36Speaker 3: So this hit me when I was doing work around
- 9:38Speaker 3: the house the other day and trying to open up
- 9:40Speaker 3: some boxes and cut some things that I can never
- 9:43Speaker 3: find the scissors or knives in my house. And how
- 9:45Speaker 3: great would it be if I just had my own
- 9:48Speaker 3: personal pocket knife that I had on me all the time?
- 9:51Speaker 3: And that's why I can't wait to get my Benchmade knives.
- 9:55Speaker 3: They've got this legendary bug out knife. It's designed specifically

- 12:51Speaker 3: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 12:55Speaker 3: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
- 12:58Speaker 2: But it doesn't mean that the player isn't trying to
- 13:01Speaker 2: get back. It doesn't mean that In the case of
- 13:04Speaker 2: Jonathan Grenard, that it was a bad addition and Howie
- 13:06Speaker 2: Roseman got fleeced or anything like that.
- 13:09Speaker 1: It's just the way that it goes sometimes. But, you know,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I see a lot of, you know, comparing Jonathan Grenard
- 13:15Speaker 1: to Bryce Huff. That's not fair.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I see a lot of just general frustration. And this
- 13:22Speaker 2: is how most teams live year to year in the NFL.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Maybe not to this excessive nature of the injuries that
- 13:29Speaker 2: the Eagles have had, but more often than not, Teams
- 13:33Speaker 2: are sort of snakebitten by injuries, and they have things
- 13:37Speaker 2: that don't go their way.
- 13:38Speaker 1: It's never perfect.
- 13:39Speaker 2: It's gone as close to perfect as you can imagine
- 13:43Speaker 2: for the Eagles over the past few years, and that's
- 13:45Speaker 2: just not the way that it always goes. And so
- 13:47Speaker 2: this is how the rest of the league is really
- 13:50Speaker 2: dealing with it. Now, what can the Eagles do at
- 13:52Speaker 2: wide receiver? Who's stepping up at wide receiver, and what
- 13:55Speaker 2: can you expect? Well, expectations should be tempered, but... Makai
- 14:02Speaker 2: Lemon is someone who, to me, has come on a
- 14:04Speaker 2: little bit. And when the Eagles have used him traditionally
- 14:06Speaker 2: as a wide receiver, not as a gadget guy where
- 14:09Speaker 2: those plays just have little to no chance of working,
- 14:13Speaker 2: I think that he's shown an ability to get open,
- 14:15Speaker 2: attack the football at his highest point.
- 14:17Speaker 1: The catch against Jacksonville stands out to me.
- 14:21Speaker 2: But I think, ideally, you want to get him on
- 14:23Speaker 2: the move, meaning you're hitting him in stride over the middle.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Let tacklers work to bring him down.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Let Lemon.
- 14:30Speaker 2: sort of navigate space and really take advantage of his
- 14:34Speaker 2: ability to run after the catch. If they get the
- 14:37Speaker 2: ball in his hands and it's not a screen pass,
- 14:40Speaker 2: I think good things can happen. Darius Cooper has been
- 14:44Speaker 2: just a great story of development. Now, he's not someone
- 14:47Speaker 2: who traditionally can be a burner. He's more of a
- 14:50Speaker 2: physical guy. He will fight for the ball, those contested catches.
- 14:55Speaker 2: He's good after the catch, really strong player, strong in
- 14:59Speaker 2: the football. good body control, not a vertical threat, but
- 15:04Speaker 2: there's a lot of built-in trust there established from McKee
- 15:09Speaker 2: and Cooper just over time on task and training camp preseason.
- 15:14Speaker 2: So he'll let it, you know, he won't hesitate to
- 15:16Speaker 2: throw the ball his way. And Darius has proven to
- 15:19Speaker 2: be very opportunistic early in his career because he hasn't
- 15:24Speaker 2: gotten a lot of receptions but he converts most of
- 15:27Speaker 2: those into touchdowns it feels like or it's a big
- 15:30Speaker 2: catch so those are going to be your top two
- 15:32Speaker 2: receivers then you have the likes of Elijah Moore who
- 15:36Speaker 2: really has just been the motion guy for the Eagles
- 15:40Speaker 2: he has one reception for four yards there looked to
- 15:43Speaker 2: have been a miscommunication with Elijah Moore McKee along the
- 15:46Speaker 2: sideline against the Panthers but the player that I'm really
- 15:49Speaker 2: intrigued to see and he should get his opportunity is
- 15:53Speaker 2: this week is Hollywood Brown. And Hollywood Brown has been
- 15:56Speaker 2: nothing but a true professional in every sense. Things have
- 15:59Speaker 2: not gone his way. He even admitted that he envisioned
- 16:02Speaker 2: a bigger role in this offense. He's played in one game.
- 16:05Speaker 2: He has two carries. But what I've seen from Hollywood
- 16:08Speaker 2: behind the scenes is someone who doesn't have his confidence shaken.
- 16:11Speaker 1: He has a really good support system around him.
- 16:13Speaker 2: He still has confidence in himself and his ability to
- 16:18Speaker 2: Go out there and.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Make things happen.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Whether that proves true or not, that's what you need
- 16:22Speaker 2: to have as a player. And he should have some
- 16:24Speaker 2: opportunities on Monday night to actually factor as a receiver.
- 16:27Speaker 2: The Eagles signed him to a one-year deal. They gave
- 16:30Speaker 2: him $ 5 million guaranteed. And even in training camp, he
- 16:33Speaker 2: was overshadowed by Cooper and Wicks and.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Devontae when he was there.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I think that kind of took away a little bit
- 16:42Speaker 2: from what Hollywood was doing, and he didn't have a
- 16:44Speaker 2: camp that was on the same level as those guys,
- 16:47Speaker 2: but he did have some positive moments. He did make
- 16:50Speaker 2: some plays, and I think right now, while he hasn't
- 16:52Speaker 2: been used as a vertical threat at any point in
- 16:55Speaker 2: his career, his 11.6 yards per reception support that. I
- 17:00Speaker 2: do think that he can factor as a horizontal type
- 17:03Speaker 2: of guy.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You get him on the move.
- 17:05Speaker 2: He can run after the catch. He has some juice.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And that's where I think he gives the Eagles an advantage.
- 17:11Speaker 2: He differentiates himself from the other guys in the room.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And I assume that when he's out there and he
- 17:16Speaker 2: does get those opportunities, you're going to try to maximize
- 17:18Speaker 2: it and.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Really try to.
- 17:21Speaker 2: really try to go out there and reestablish yourself, and
- 17:24Speaker 2: this time in a new city and a new offense,
- 17:27Speaker 2: and prove that you do belong on the field and
- 17:29Speaker 2: that the Eagles made a mistake by not putting you
- 17:32Speaker 2: out there. So those are the top four receivers that
- 17:34Speaker 2: you're going to see. And, of course, they still have
- 17:36Speaker 2: Britton Covey. But while I think Britton's totally competent at
- 17:41Speaker 2: playing receiver, I don't know that you want to put
- 17:43Speaker 2: him out there. He's so valuable as a punt returner.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Do you want him taking some shots– As a receiver.
- 17:50Speaker 2: He's a good route runner. He has good short area quickness.
- 17:52Speaker 2: But when you have other players who can do it.
- 17:54Speaker 2: And you know how valuable Britton is. As a punt returner.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I think he's still second in the NFL. In return yards.
- 18:00Speaker 2: That could change. Because I'm recording this on a Sunday afternoon.
- 18:06Speaker 2: But he's there as well. So that's the pass catching situation.
- 18:10Speaker 2: And we'll see what the Eagles decide to do. Monday
- 18:15Speaker 2: by 4 o'clock. Keep an eye on elevations. keep an
- 18:19Speaker 2: eye on additions to the roster.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And I'm really looking forward to seeing Vic.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Fangio and Christian Parker go out there. Cause let's not
- 18:29Speaker 2: forget Christian Parker has a lot of Fangio influence in
- 18:33Speaker 2: his defense. They were together for a while and there's
- 18:36Speaker 2: a lot of mutual respect there. Now, Christian Parker is
- 18:39Speaker 2: someone that I've been very high on. I've been consistent
- 18:42Speaker 2: with that. His Rocky start as Cowboys defensive coordinator doesn't
- 18:46Speaker 2: change that. I think he's a bright mind, but it
- 18:50Speaker 2: takes a little bit of time to get the personnel
- 18:52Speaker 2: that you need to fully imagine your system. You're inheriting,
- 18:57Speaker 2: in many cases, a lot of these players, and it's
- 18:59Speaker 2: up to you to make it work, but that might
- 19:02Speaker 2: be why you're seeing some early turbulence. I know Mike
- 19:04Speaker 2: Pettin is there as a senior assistant, but I think
- 19:08Speaker 2: Christian's going to be okay, and he's young. I know
- 19:12Speaker 2: that there are some that kind of look at it
- 19:14Speaker 2: now in hindsight and wonder if he was given the
- 19:17Speaker 2: job too early and he still needed to cut his
- 19:19Speaker 2: teeth as a position coach. There's no way of knowing.
- 19:24Speaker 2: But I do know that he knows football. He's a
- 19:27Speaker 2: sharp guy. And sometimes it takes a little bit of
- 19:30Speaker 2: time for things to marinate. And that goes for a
- 19:32Speaker 2: lot of things in this world. And in a society
- 19:35Speaker 2: that wants this instant gratification, it doesn't always happen that way. Now,
- 19:39Speaker 2: what I'll tell you is, and I know I said
- 19:42Speaker 2: this against the Panthers as well, the Dallas Cowboys defense
- 19:45Speaker 2: is vulnerable, and that's where I think you can take
- 19:47Speaker 2: advantage if you're Tanner McKee. finding the soft spots in
- 19:50Speaker 2: the zone and trying to get the run game going.
- 19:54Speaker 2: They don't have a very impactful run defense. So if
- 19:58Speaker 2: Landon does play, if Saquon does play, I like the
- 20:01Speaker 2: Eagles' chances of trying to get some semblance of a
- 20:03Speaker 2: run game going. And... offensively, you look at the skill
- 20:08Speaker 2: players and you may be under the assumption of it
- 20:12Speaker 2: being an explosive offense. That has not been the case
- 20:14Speaker 2: this year. They've actually been a plotting offense and have
- 20:18Speaker 2: not really maximized the star power that they have there.
- 20:22Speaker 2: So they're an offense that's still trying to figure it out.
- 20:26Speaker 2: It's going to be a game in which the Cowboys
- 20:29Speaker 2: are the better team, at least in my view right now.
- 20:32Speaker 1: But it's a division game.
- 20:35Speaker 2: You could have a morale boost from having the return
- 20:38Speaker 2: of a Saquon, maybe a Landon Dickerson, and it's going
- 20:43Speaker 2: to be a primetime game in Philadelphia versus a Cowboys
- 20:47Speaker 2: team right now that they're really.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Inconsistent as well. They have a chance.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I don't know that I can in good faith pick
- 20:56Speaker 2: the Eagles given what we've seen in recent weeks, but
- 20:59Speaker 2: they have a chance, more maybe than some of you think.
- 21:02Speaker 1: So we'll see how things happen.
- 21:04Speaker 2: And how the game unfolds, but those are sort of
- 21:07Speaker 2: my last-minute notes as Monday night rapidly approaches. And with that,
- 21:12Speaker 2: that is going to do it for this episode of
- 21:14Speaker 2: DiCecco Daily.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I'm Andrew DiCecco, and I'll catch you all on the
- 21:18Speaker 1: next one.
