- 0:01And I forgot to play the music. I'm not I'm not the one who
- 0:05usually does this. So I forgot to play the music.
- 0:08Greg. We're missing Greg, but we have
- 0:11Adam from Splendid Sports, one of the Co founders here of
- 0:14Sports Card Clubhouse. Adam, thanks for joining me.
- 0:17Happy to be here my man. I am a little disappointed.
- 0:19That is the best intro. I should have brought like a
- 0:22flute. What's that like?
- 0:23It's like at the beginning where it's like whatever he's got,
- 0:26there's like 2 cards collectors. Yeah, I love it.
- 0:31So yeah, great to be with you. And what's Greg doing right now,
- 0:34you think? He's probably flying towards
- 0:38Strongsville in this very moment.
- 0:41The road to Strongsville. You've been watching some
- 0:44masters Feels like a gym gym dance voice.
- 0:48I got I got my master's flag here.
- 0:51Nice. Is it?
- 0:52Is it autographed? No, it's nothing.
- 0:55You know what it it was one of the things I miss when I lived
- 0:58in Arizona. I had my own 5 hole putting
- 1:01green on the side of my yard and I had little flags that had
- 1:05masters in them. So I I saved one.
- 1:08That was back when, you know, I lived in a nice weather place
- 1:11and I could play golf. GG season will be here soon.
- 1:17Yeah, I can't wait. Yeah, I haven't golfed in 17
- 1:24years. What?
- 1:27Yeah, I was, I was a golfer in college.
- 1:29My handicap was 11 or 12. I golfed.
- 1:34I didn't golf on the team, but I had a college membership at the
- 1:37Brunswick Golf Club in Maine. And it was at the time one of
- 1:41the harder courses in Maine. And I would pay $180 for the
- 1:48entire summer as a student. And, you know, there's 40 bucks
- 1:53greens fees every time out. So it only took me 4 1/2 times
- 1:58playing to make it up. And I would do that two weeks.
- 2:00It would take me two weeks to make up the cost.
- 2:04And when I graduated from college, I got the bill, you
- 2:06know, it said now that you're no longer a student.
- 2:07And it was like $2200. I was like, yeah, no, sorry.
- 2:13So yeah, I think I've golfed maybe five times since college.
- 2:18We got to do Mike this summer. We'll meet somewhere in the
- 2:21middle. We'll play.
- 2:23We got to play some golf, man. Yeah, that would be I I do miss
- 2:26playing a lot. I I used to play well when I was
- 2:29in Arizona. Obviously you can play more golf
- 2:31there throughout the year, but also before you have kids, you
- 2:36know that that's probably a big reason you haven't played in 17
- 2:38years, right? I'm guessing with kids it's it's
- 2:41tough to find the time sometimes to.
- 2:44Block out like. Five hours of of golf or
- 2:47whatever, or the money, Yeah, it's expensive.
- 2:49Yeah, it's very expensive and yeah, I would love to golf.
- 2:54We should do it. All right, let's do it, man.
- 2:56We're doing it. So what have you been up to,
- 3:00Adam? I don't hear from you much.
- 3:02I mean, except via text message. I know you're busy.
- 3:04You moved to Cape Cod area of Massachusetts.
- 3:09Tell the viewers what you've been up to.
- 3:12Well, I, you know, I used to make some videos on YouTube
- 3:15other, you know, I do some stuff here once in a while on sports
- 3:17card Clubhouse, which is fun, but my own channel is a little
- 3:20it's in like a little pause right now.
- 3:23Splendid Sports is on hold just because I don't know, I just
- 3:28it's not so much time. It's just kind of like, I just
- 3:32don't know sometimes what to do on there, you know?
- 3:35I mean, I, I'm still buying cards I'm adding to my
- 3:38collection. So probably just laziness, Mike,
- 3:42honestly, I don't really have a good excuse as far as why I'm
- 3:44not putting out videos these days.
- 3:46But I just, I watch just as many YouTube videos as I as I used
- 3:51to. So as far as my like viewing and
- 3:54commenting and all that stuff, that that game's pretty strong.
- 3:58But I just haven't been putting out a ton other than, you know,
- 4:01every every few weeks here on the clubhouse.
- 4:04But but yeah, I've been having fun, you know, adding to the
- 4:09collection. I got some some pretty big
- 4:12pickups that I I would like to show, you know, maybe on a turn
- 4:16back the clock with Dylan here in the next few weeks.
- 4:19I don't have them in hand yet, but I haven't really slowed down
- 4:22on that end as far as as buying cards.
- 4:25Well, I look forward to seeing those.
- 4:26Yeah, I, I was, I, I took a break from buying like big
- 4:29cards, but that ended pretty recently, so.
- 4:32I was gonna say. So, yeah, other than that, just,
- 4:36you know, waiting for the good weather to come and, you know,
- 4:39like you said, play some golf maybe this summer.
- 4:43Yeah, good. How much is fanatics paying you
- 4:48to tweet about their their current conference that they've
- 4:52got out there? Yeah, I did.
- 4:54I did see some of those videos. I'm I'm surprised.
- 4:56Why were you not invited to? Were you invited to that?
- 4:59I was not invited to that. I don't.
- 5:02I'm not friendly with fanatics. I don't try to be friendly with
- 5:05fanatics. And nothing against the people
- 5:07who are getting paid to be there and to tweet about it and post
- 5:09about it and stuff. It's just not my scene.
- 5:12In fact, I've dialed way back the amount of stuff I've done
- 5:16publicly in the hobby. I'm still collecting as much as
- 5:18ever, but I'm not trying to grow my channel anymore.
- 5:22I've cut back on newsletter stuff.
- 5:23I've cut back on a lot of stuff just because of a lack of time.
- 5:29But if if fanatics were to invite me, I would most likely
- 5:33say thanks, but no thanks. There's, there's, Oh, hang on a
- 5:38second, look at, look at this man.
- 5:41What is this guy doing here? We get the same sweatshirt on
- 5:44too. I mean, great minds think alike,
- 5:47right? There he is.
- 5:50Where are you right now, Gate A-14?
- 5:55I'm at a 14 at the Denver airport with my boy.
- 6:00Hey, return to collecting Darren.
- 6:02Darren. Hello.
- 6:05What are you guys talking about? Yeah, what's the topic?
- 6:07We were talking about how overrated Derek Jeter was.
- 6:10Oh, see. You guys later, it's good to see
- 6:14you. I was I was just watching on the
- 6:17plane episode 2 one and then part of two of the a Rod, the a
- 6:24rod documentary on HBO and Jeter is interviewed in at multiple
- 6:29times and it's a little bit uncomfortable at moments, the
- 6:33whole thing. Is it worth watching?
- 6:36Oh yeah, it's really good. That's right up my alley.
- 6:38I would. Watch that.
- 6:39Really good. OK, I'll watch it.
- 6:41I, I walk away going man, I feel sorry for a Rod because he's
- 6:46just like a dope, you know? He's so bad.
- 6:49But is but he also, I mean, he has he has baggage.
- 6:54We'll just say that it's good. Yeah.
- 6:58So, all right, Well, I do just a quick little cameo.
- 7:02We're, you know, we're headed Windsor flight Leaf.
- 7:05You got to jump in the. Boarding line in a couple
- 7:07minutes. So we're about to board headed
- 7:09to Cleveland. We will see as, as this is being
- 7:13recorded. We will see you Mike tomorrow.
- 7:15And Adam continues to resist spending time with me in person.
- 7:21I'll be watching though. I'll be watching your videos and
- 7:24Mike and I are going to golf this summer, so if you want to
- 7:27fly out the Massachusetts we could for.
- 7:29A round of golf. Just for a round of golf.
- 7:32I think I'll just take some video highlights and.
- 7:36Fair enough. All right.
- 7:37Well, that's all. Just I wanted to say to you
- 7:40guys. Good seeing you guys.
- 7:41All right. Good seeing you guys.
- 7:42Have fun. All right, bye.
- 7:43Thanks. Guys, see.
- 7:47You. So I was going to ask you that.
- 7:49Still on. He's still on there.
- 7:51There he is. There he goes.
- 7:53I was going to ask you that, Mike.
- 7:54So you are going to Strongsville Independence, whatever we're
- 7:58calling it tomorrow. Is it tomorrow?
- 8:01Yeah, I'm leaving. I have 4:00 AM tomorrow.
- 8:04OK. So I got up early today and I
- 8:06thought normally I would want to take a nap because I have today
- 8:08off. And I was like, I'd normally
- 8:10take a nap, but I thought, no, I want to be really tired tonight.
- 8:12So I go to sleep early because I have to be up at 4:00 and out
- 8:16the door at like 4:15. 4/20 OK, yeah.
- 8:21And you've got you're going to stay there one night. 2.
- 8:24Two nights. OK, well, that'll be cool.
- 8:27You didn't go there last year, did you?
- 8:29This is my first and probably last time going to Strongsville.
- 8:31OK, All right. I, you know, they've they
- 8:34changed it. When I first plan on going, it
- 8:36was all vintage in an ice hockey arena, ice rink, and I thought
- 8:43this is really cool. Then they changed it and it's
- 8:47now I guess there's a bunch of Pokémon and modern and stuff
- 8:50like that. And I just don't think I want to
- 8:54go every year to the same show. I've I've want to go to
- 8:57Chantilly, I want to go to Nashville, I want to go to
- 8:59Dallas. I want to do all these other big
- 9:01shows that I've never been to before.
- 9:03And so I might do a rotation. That's a good idea.
- 9:06Yeah. I was thinking, you know, if I
- 9:08could find the time, I would love to go to the Dallas show.
- 9:11Obviously a lot further than it used to be when I was in
- 9:14Arizona. But the Dallas show and the West
- 9:17Coast card show out in California, I mean, that's like
- 9:20in February. So it's like perfect.
- 9:22But I mean like I think it was actually the same week my kids
- 9:24had February vacation from. School.
- 9:28So if it's the same week, next week, or excuse me, next week,
- 9:31same week next year, then that might time out perfectly.
- 9:35I would. I could take the whole family
- 9:36out. California, we could get out of
- 9:38cold Massachusetts. So that could be something I, I
- 9:41do. And my man Dylan's there.
- 9:44I think he's going to go again next.
- 9:45Year I'm sold. Mike Petty, all these guys,
- 9:48great. I'm sold.
- 9:49Yeah, I should do that. Yeah.
- 9:51I I would like to take my wife and and our 16 year old, our 22
- 9:54year old just moved out last week, last Wednesday, which is
- 9:58crazy. Wow.
- 10:00Yeah. But yeah.
- 10:02So I think is that Burbank? Is that what it is?
- 10:06Burbank West Coast card show. Yeah, so, yeah.
- 10:12But you know, let's talk about how overrated Jeter was.
- 10:16You know, I am the the crazy thing is I, I have been, I mean,
- 10:20now when, when he was playing and like it was in the heat of
- 10:23the rivalry, I was not, you know, saying nice things about
- 10:26Jeter. But after the fact, looking
- 10:28back, man, he he was unbelievable.
- 10:32I mean, he just, I know a lot of people say he's overrated, but I
- 10:35really put a lot of value on that, those intangibles.
- 10:39And I feel like you really know a player when you your team goes
- 10:43up against them and like for me, the test is always in a clutch
- 10:47spot. Do you want that guy up at the
- 10:49plate, you know, that's facing your team?
- 10:52And Jeter is a no. So that tells me that, you know,
- 10:55there were some other Yankees, like like even a rod, right?
- 10:58I didn't worry when a Rod came to the plate when he was going
- 11:01against the Red Sox. I know he had the better numbers
- 11:03and all that, but runner on 2nd with Jeter up, you know, 1st and
- 11:082nd or whatever. I was worried about Jeter and I
- 11:11was worried about like, you know, Bernie Williams and Paul
- 11:14O'Neill and Brosius and all these guys.
- 11:17But like some of the bigger ones like Soriano and and a Rod, like
- 11:21some of the bigger names, for whatever reason, Giambi, I
- 11:24didn't worry as much with those guys.
- 11:26It's very, it was very weird. So Greg, I think on a video, I
- 11:30don't know where it was last week, said that he doesn't like
- 11:32it when people call Jeter overrated.
- 11:34And I I think that it's less of a reflection on the player
- 11:38'cause I think Derek Jeter is an all time great first ballot Hall
- 11:41of Famer. There's no doubt one of the
- 11:43greatest players to ever play the game.
- 11:46But I also think that the media overrated his greatness.
- 11:50And you can be, you can be an all time great and still be
- 11:54thought of as better than you really were.
- 11:57Jeter, I think he won five Gold Gloves.
- 12:00He was not good defensively, Shouldn't have won Gold Gloves.
- 12:02It's more of a popularity contest.
- 12:04But also, if you tell me David Ortiz, who I love, was a
- 12:07terrible fielder, I'll say yeah, he was an absolutely terrible
- 12:11fielder. But I think Derek Jeter, I don't
- 12:16know what top ten, top 20 players of all time.
- 12:22I can't hate him. I there was a brief time in the
- 12:24late 90s where he was like the third or fourth best shortstop
- 12:28offensively. You know, you had Nomar, you had
- 12:32a Rod, you had Tejada who were offensively better than Jeter,
- 12:37but they only, they didn't do it long enough.
- 12:40Well, I guess a rod did, but we'll leave him out of it.
- 12:43Jeter did it for a long, long time.
- 12:45And even if you take out his last like 5 years where he was a
- 12:47detriment to his team, statistically, his career was
- 12:53amazing. He was consistently for a very
- 12:56long time the player I always wanted Nomar to be.
- 13:01Me too. And when he when he dove into
- 13:03those stands with Nomar in the dugout, refusing to play,
- 13:07allegedly refusing to play, that killed me.
- 13:10That was that was that 04? Was that right before they
- 13:13traded him? I think it was Yeah, Yeah.
- 13:16And that was one of that was a low point.
- 13:18I remember that. Just feeling like this is bad.
- 13:22Oh, that that was rough. You know, there was a few years
- 13:26ago, I think I, Dylan and I did an episode.
- 13:30It was with John Newman and Danny Black.
- 13:32The four of us got on and we were just talking about a bunch
- 13:36of things. But one of the things that we
- 13:38were talking about was name a player that you that you think
- 13:43their cards will be more appreciated over time or, or
- 13:47someone that has even more upside in the hobby, you know,
- 13:50long term. And when I actually said Jeter
- 13:54for, for, I can't remember all the reasons I gave, but I just,
- 13:57I remember thinking at the time that like, I just feel like
- 14:00Jeter's a guy who's going to, as Yankees fans from that era get
- 14:05older and older and they look back at that time period.
- 14:08I feel like Jeter's going to be more and more beloved, even
- 14:11though he's our, you know, he's already a, a darling of theirs,
- 14:14But I think he's going to, I think his cards are going to
- 14:16really stand the test of time, which I know Greg would like to
- 14:20hear that, but I, I have thought that for a long time.
- 14:22I think, you know, his cards were pretty cheap, like at least
- 14:26when I was looking at that like a few years ago compared to some
- 14:29other guys in that era even. And I don't know where they're
- 14:34at now so much, but I feel like Jeter's going to age well as far
- 14:39as his cards and, and he's got a lot of them.
- 14:41But let's say his like, you know, most famous cards and even
- 14:45the, you know, the big rare ones.
- 14:46Obviously I think he's he's going to do well.
- 14:48And I think a lot of the players will from that time period.
- 14:51But Jeter, Jeter, I think is just, he's never going to fall
- 14:56out of favor. I agree and one of those titles
- 15:01like Mickey Mantle. Yeah, and you see a little
- 15:03lacrosse appeal now too. Like we again, we couldn't stand
- 15:06Jeter when he went during like, you know, the late 90s, early
- 15:102000s. But now I've kind of softened on
- 15:12him, right. And I think, God, when when that
- 15:14happens in the hobby, like, you know, even non Yankees fans want
- 15:18a Jeter card as time goes on. I did that with Michael Jordan.
- 15:22I hated Michael Jordan. Now I look back and I'm like,
- 15:25I'm like, you know, I want a Jordan card, right, At least for
- 15:28the collection. So I I think that will happen a
- 15:31little bit with Jeter too over time as as the years go on.
- 15:35I loved Jordan, so I didn't get into the Celtics until the the
- 15:39Celtics dynasty was basically done and I I would go to Bowden
- 15:45basketball camp at Bowden College.
- 15:47As a kid, I went six times and we would go into this film room
- 15:51where we would watch Michael Jordan highlights for like an
- 15:55hour every day and I was just obsessed with Jordan.
- 15:58I loved Michael Jordan from a young age.
- 16:03Yeah, I, I should maybe hate it is the wrong word.
- 16:05I just, I, I would just rooted against them because, you know,
- 16:09Larry Bird had just retired, right?
- 16:11Pretty much. And my, yeah, my last memories
- 16:14of Larry Bird were him laying on the the sideline, stretching his
- 16:17back, you know, and it was just kind of like man.
- 16:20And like you, I really missed the, you know, the peak years of
- 16:26Larry Bird. I obviously watched the
- 16:28highlights and all that stuff, but when I really remember Bird,
- 16:31it was towards the end of his career and the Celtics.
- 16:34So I kind of missed that prime and then all I and then we had a
- 16:38neighbor who moved in around like it was like 90, 95 or
- 16:44something like that. They moved in the neighborhood
- 16:46from Chicago. Huge Bulls fans.
- 16:48You know, I was friends with the two of the two of the the kids,
- 16:51their two boys, and they just love the Bulls.
- 16:56And, you know, we'd go over their house and I'd have to
- 16:58watch the Bulls win finals and pretend like I was like, oh,
- 17:01great, you know, and I'm like, oh, this is great.
- 17:04You know, it was killing me. But that kind of led to me just
- 17:07being like, I want to see, I'm tired of seeing Jordan win all
- 17:10these. But now I'm just like, yeah, he
- 17:13was the best, you know? And I want a card of his.
- 17:16Yeah, yeah, You brought a couple things you wanted to talk about
- 17:19too, right? Yeah, I do.
- 17:21And I actually want to circle back a little bit to, you know,
- 17:24that you, you mentioned the fanatics thing.
- 17:27You know how they're had tops, tops fanatics have in their big
- 17:30conference out in Arizona. And I've seen yeah, some some
- 17:33Youtubers and others going out there and, you know, covering
- 17:38the conferences and all that. And, you know, one of the things
- 17:40that kind of hit me when I was watching some of those videos is
- 17:45I was just like, man, I have almost like 0 to do with
- 17:49anything like new in the hobby, right, 'cause like they're, you
- 17:51know, they're covering, they're covering like, you know, new
- 17:54products, innovations, and it's all, it all sounds great, you
- 17:57know, and it's good for the overall hobby.
- 17:59I think a lot of it as far as making it more popular, but for
- 18:03me, I was just like, you know, I, I can't see a scenario where
- 18:06I'm buying any car, any new cards anymore, right?
- 18:09Like the old of the newest card I think I have in my collection
- 18:12is from 2020, a Tom Brady first year bucks card.
- 18:16And I'm looking at like where, where my collection's AT and
- 18:20where it's continuing to go. I really don't see like I'm not
- 18:23buying any Tom Brady post playing days cards.
- 18:27I don't see me really buying anything new in the future.
- 18:32You know, I, it could always change, but so I'm just like, I
- 18:35don't have any real interest or stake in any of that stuff.
- 18:39I mean, it all sounds great. I'm glad they're growing the
- 18:41hobby and everything, but all the stuff that I have and will
- 18:44want to get in the future is stuff that's already been out,
- 18:47you know what I mean? So it's just it's interesting
- 18:51because a lot of people care a lot about that stuff, but I'm
- 18:53like, I don't know, I don't know, kind of like you like even
- 18:56not that they're going to invite me, but even if I I was invited
- 18:59to something like that, I just don't really connect much with
- 19:02it. And probably a lot of vintage
- 19:04collectors that watch this podcast too, probably would
- 19:07think the same thing, you know, And so it got me more thinking.
- 19:11And then I watched a video of hobby hotline on, I think it was
- 19:16the last hobby hotline Doctor Beckett was on there with from
- 19:20PSAI think is Chris Carlin was on there.
- 19:23And it was a, it was a exchange where Chris Carlin was talking
- 19:28about his sons. And I think he said they're
- 19:31like, you know, 12 or something like in that age, you know,
- 19:3411:50 and how they're into the hobby and all that.
- 19:37And he, and then he kind of said, you know, before they
- 19:40leave the hobby, when they get into girls, you know, and, and
- 19:42then Dr. Beckett chimed in and said, you know, maybe that won't
- 19:46happen 'cause it, it happened with our generation, right?
- 19:50Like maybe not for girls, but at a certain age, you know, like in
- 19:541994, I look at, that's kind of the last I see of my collection.
- 19:58It was like a cut off .94 where it just was like a mass exodus
- 20:03of us. Kids, you just.
- 20:04Put everything on pause and Doctor Becker was saying like he
- 20:08thinks that's not going to happen with this generation that
- 20:12the, the kids are in it now that are maybe 10 or 1112 that are
- 20:16big into it. Might stick around the hobby
- 20:18because it's cool now. I wanted to get your thoughts on
- 20:21that. I thought it was kind of an
- 20:23interesting way to look at it. I don't know, do you think some
- 20:27of these younger kids that are in it, they're going to probably
- 20:29stay in it for like the hustle part of it and flipping cards
- 20:32and stuff. But maybe it'll be a little
- 20:34different than when a lot of the hobby just left in like 94 or
- 20:38whatever it was. Yeah, you know, I think I was.
- 20:42I don't want to say I was embarrassed by it, but I
- 20:44certainly didn't want other people outside of my small group
- 20:48knowing that I was a card collector at the age of 14 years
- 20:51old, 'cause I was impossibly uncool, Adam.
- 20:55I effortlessly, effortlessly uncool.
- 21:00I called it yesterday I and I was very, very self.
- 21:08I have major self esteem issues at that age and anybody
- 21:11criticizing me for collecting cards would have wrecked me.
- 21:14And so I think that played a big part in me leaving the hobby
- 21:19'cause I I was interested in girls but they weren't
- 21:22interested in me. So it wasn't like I was
- 21:23discovering girls and I anyway, I do think that it's cooler now.
- 21:31There are a lot of teenage boys who are making a lot of money
- 21:34doing and teenage girls too, selling cards, collecting cards.
- 21:40And it's much cooler. You can make yourself through
- 21:43YouTube, through the magic of editing of YouTube.
- 21:46Look cooler. Look at what?
- 21:47Wait, look, look what I do. I'm much cooler thanks to my
- 21:50edits, right? Absolutely.
- 21:52Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I I think Doctor Beckett
- 21:56makes a good point there, and it'll be interesting to see what
- 22:00happens over these next 5 to 10 years with the younger people in
- 22:04the hobby. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:07It just got me thinking because it's, I look, it's funny, 'cause
- 22:10now I look back at like the, I'm trying to figure out, like I'm
- 22:13trying to remember like when I stopped collecting cards.
- 22:15But again, I look back, it's like 94 and then, but I don't
- 22:19remember being like, I'm putting these things away.
- 22:21It just kind of gradually lost interest and then my friends
- 22:24lost interest. So, and it wasn't even cause
- 22:27like, oh, you know, I can't have the girls know that I'm into
- 22:30cards. Like I, it was no thought of
- 22:32that. It was just, I moved on to
- 22:34whatever, just sports, playing sports myself, focusing more on
- 22:37that. It just it kind of went away.
- 22:38You put them away. So it, it something like that
- 22:41could probably happen to this generation.
- 22:43Like we're in this, this boom we're in.
- 22:46If you want to say it started in like 2019 or whatever, you know,
- 22:51we're about seven years in to that, this boom.
- 22:54And if you look at like what was it 80?
- 22:57What do you, what do you consider like the boom back then
- 22:58like 87 to 94 or something like that?
- 23:01I always say 86 to 94. Yeah.
- 23:04So you're looking at like 7-8 years.
- 23:06So you know we're approaching that mark really of this latest
- 23:10one the the a 7-8 year mark. So I'm not going anywhere and I
- 23:17doesn't sound like you are either.
- 23:18So I guess we'll see, we'll kind of see where things go.
- 23:21But it was it just I thought that was interesting because
- 23:24like it was a good episode. I recommend that one latest
- 23:27hobby hotline on for collectors. But yeah, it was just like I'm
- 23:32thinking back of like I, I get more and more nostalgic now for
- 23:36the for like 80s, for the 80s and the 90s, early 90s.
- 23:41I always have been a nostalgic guy, but now with kids and stuff
- 23:44and like just seeing the world now.
- 23:48I like I'll watch an 80s movie and it's just like even the, the
- 23:52kind of the edgy ones of the time, they're still like so
- 23:55wholesome, you know? And then now you see stuff and
- 23:57it's like man, stuff on Netflix that like any kids can watch.
- 24:02And it's just like so more perverted now and like just
- 24:06crazy. Like the, the edgy stuff now is
- 24:09almost like, whoa, jeez, this is like insane.
- 24:11And I look back. I know our parents probably
- 24:13thought the same thing, but oh man, I watch like a, a John
- 24:17Candy movie or something and I'm just like, man, these are the
- 24:21best these movies. And just like the whole culture.
- 24:24I I really, it's growing stronger and stronger, you know,
- 24:27and maybe that's why some of these junk wax era cards are
- 24:30getting more and more popular and valuable is because, you
- 24:34know, we're looking back and it's just like we're kind of
- 24:37missed those days and. And we have money.
- 24:40Yeah. Yeah, our generation has reached
- 24:42that age, you know, mid to late 40s where we finally have money
- 24:47for the first time. And we're reminiscing.
- 24:49We're nostalgia for those those days.
- 24:53I suppose I mentioned John Candy.
- 24:55This, this is I still got it. It's still wrapped up.
- 24:57This was a just a random purchase on eBay was a Hostess.
- 25:03I think it's it's considered like his rookie.
- 25:06It's a Hostess John Candy from I think it was 1988 from Have you
- 25:10ever seen the movie The Great Outdoors?
- 25:12Of course I love that. Classic, classic.
- 25:15And I was just like, I don't know, I was just searching John
- 25:18Candy stuff 'cause I, I saw there was a documentary about
- 25:21him and it was really, really good.
- 25:23And I, I love his movies. Always did, even when I was a
- 25:26kid and I saw this thing and it's like Hostess John Candy.
- 25:31I'm like, I'll take it. I, it was like a few bucks.
- 25:34But little things like that, I love, I love, I love 80s stuff,
- 25:39man. Late 80s is like peak ME.
- 25:43Here's a little sacrilege for you.
- 25:45I love John Candy too. One of my all time favorite
- 25:47movies is Home Alone. The original Home Alone and I
- 25:49can't stand the John Candy appearance.
- 25:53I don't. It's completely pointless and
- 25:57it's not that funny. He's adorable as he always is
- 26:00was, but it wasn't really that funny.
- 26:04And she didn't even need to ride with them because the family
- 26:09arrived immediately after she did.
- 26:11So just completely pointless. It's it's like, hey, let's get
- 26:13John Candy in our movie. Yeah, they actually kind of
- 26:17mentioned it in the I don't know if you saw there was a
- 26:19documentary about him, but I think it's on like one of the
- 26:22big ones. But it came out in the last year
- 26:25and it was really good. But I think they kind of hint at
- 26:28that, like it was a very odd thing and he I think like he
- 26:32agreed to do it and then like the next day he showed up and
- 26:34they filmed his part real quick. Like so it was yeah, they talk
- 26:39about that where it was a very the late, the woman who just,
- 26:42she just passed away, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah, she, she was
- 26:45talking about it 'cause they were really good friends.
- 26:48So, yeah, but yeah, that, but you know, even like summer
- 26:52rental, you know, it's just, I, I watched that one again
- 26:56recently and it's, you know, it's some of it's corny and
- 26:58stuff, but there it, it's so funny.
- 27:01It's still funny. And again, even some of the like
- 27:03the, the edgy stuff, it's still not like what it what the stuff
- 27:08is now. You know what I mean?
- 27:09It's crazy. Well, you talk about edgy stuff
- 27:11and and our parents and my mom took me to see Uncle Buck in
- 27:15theaters. Was that 801988?
- 27:17Maybe 89? Yep, I think that's right.
- 27:20So I would have been 9 or 10 years old and my sister was
- 27:23three years older than me. And my mom took us in there and
- 27:27there's a little, there's like mild swearing.
- 27:29And my mom flipped out and pulled us out of the movie 20
- 27:32minutes in. And I wasn't able to watch it
- 27:35until I was a little bit older, probably into my teenage years.
- 27:37And it came on TV. But I still tease her for that.
- 27:41Now she's she's 76 and she swears a lot.
- 27:44And I swear a lot. And I'm like, Remember, Remember
- 27:47when we went to see Uncle Buck? Yeah, yeah, it's things have
- 27:51changed. I I got another thing I wanted
- 27:54to ask you or actually did you want to bring a topic?
- 27:56I know we both had a couple of topics, but did you go for it?
- 27:59OK, so I've been thinking about this too, because again, I, I
- 28:02still like stay pretty like I, I watch a lot of YouTube videos in
- 28:08the hobby and also, you know, on Instagram follow a bunch of
- 28:12accounts and stuff that I followed for years.
- 28:15And, you know, a lot of the channels I watch or, or, or
- 28:18Instagram accounts I follow along are I guess what you'd
- 28:21call collector accounts. So they're, you know, maybe they
- 28:24don't talk about the industry so much or, you know, a lot of that
- 28:29stuff. But they but they document their
- 28:30collection and they focus more of it on that, you know, as far
- 28:34as their channel. And one of the things that,
- 28:38yeah, I was thinking about was what for me, like what makes a
- 28:42good collector channel? What makes a good our account
- 28:45that you'd want to like follow and and keep keep watching or
- 28:49looking at their stuff? And for me, I think it's going
- 28:54along for the ride as far as like the collection.
- 28:56A lot of people do. I think a good job of show
- 28:59showing what like their goals are long term goals for their
- 29:02collection. Certain runs they're doing, like
- 29:05some of the ones that come to mind on like YouTube are, you
- 29:09know, like baseball collector Mike, you know?
- 29:11Exactly what I was thinking. Yeah, he does a great job of
- 29:13like going over here's what I'm and over the years, right, he
- 29:17stayed pretty consistent in what he's collecting.
- 29:20And you almost you almost feel invested in in his collection
- 29:24is, oh, he got another one or he needed that one.
- 29:27And even like a John Mangini, who, you know, he'll show a
- 29:30bunch of different stuff, but he's got like a, a lifelong goal
- 29:33of collecting a card from every vintage set.
- 29:37And again, he doesn't really keep track too much of it.
- 29:40It doesn't like tell us like, hey, I'm 70% of the way there,
- 29:43which I would love. I know it's probably a lot of
- 29:46work he doesn't want to do, but I like that stuff.
- 29:48I, I really like if you can see a progression, right?
- 29:52And I've been kind of turned off lately with some of the
- 29:55accounts, especially on like Instagram that I thought were
- 29:58like, you know, fellow Tom Brady collectors or fellow 90s
- 30:02collectors or certain players and whatever it is they collect.
- 30:05A lot of it is nothing even I have too much in common of.
- 30:08But they kind of laid it out nicely as far as like, here's
- 30:11here's what I'm trying to achieve with this thing over the
- 30:13years. And I followed along and I felt
- 30:16like, hey, they're, you know, they're getting closer and
- 30:18closer to what they're trying to do.
- 30:20But then pretty recently I'm seeing some of these accounts
- 30:23and a lot of these people I've never talked to or anything, but
- 30:25a lot of them are now I'm seeing like changing course or like
- 30:29picking up cards and then selling them pretty quickly.
- 30:32And I'm just like, well, where are you?
- 30:34That's like, doesn't that defeat what you're trying to do?
- 30:36Or like, you know, they, they would show a card and they're so
- 30:39proud of it. And then like a few months
- 30:41later, now it's for sale or whatever.
- 30:43So it's like, again, they people can do whatever they want with
- 30:46that. I'm not saying that's bad to do,
- 30:48but it from a like a viewing interest thing for me to stay
- 30:51invested. That kind of hurts.
- 30:53Like I almost want to like not follow along anymore, you know
- 30:56what I mean? Because I feel like, well, all
- 30:57right, we're going backwards now.
- 30:59I get, I get it, you maybe you needed money for a new roof or
- 31:01something, but that that from, I don't know, I'll get your
- 31:05thoughts on that too. Like do you follow along
- 31:07anybody's collection and and do you kind of get disappointed
- 31:11sometimes if you feel like it's not going where you would hope
- 31:14it was going? I don't know.
- 31:16I. Just multi part question.
- 31:19I'm going to try to address this the the first person I thought
- 31:22of was baseball collector Mike Moynihan.
- 31:25When you started talking about this before you even said it,
- 31:27because I've been following him longer than anybody and he and I
- 31:31collect similarly in some ways. But in some ways I have 0
- 31:36interest in collecting a lot of the things that he collects.
- 31:39But I'm also very interested in seeing him get them, like you
- 31:42said, like, oh, he got another one.
- 31:45And I think it's less to do with the collection, more to do with
- 31:49the personality. And, you know, Mike and I are
- 31:52pretty similar ages. I think he's, I don't know, four
- 31:56years older than me, something like that, three years older
- 31:59than me. And he also just has a, he's
- 32:05going to text me and make fun of me for saying this.
- 32:06But he has kind of a magnetic personality.
- 32:09I don't agree with a lot of, I shouldn't say a lot.
- 32:11I don't agree with some of the stuff that he says, but I I
- 32:15don't, that doesn't bother me. Like he, he has the kind of
- 32:19personality that I would hang out with him just like you, just
- 32:23like Dylan. And there are a lot of people
- 32:26like that. And Mike just happens to put out
- 32:28a lot of videos too, which makes it easy to follow him.
- 32:30And he he does a good job of documenting his journey.
- 32:35Greg is another one that has a magnetic personality, in my
- 32:40opinion, the kind of personality that I, the kind of person that
- 32:43I hang out with somebody in their mid to late 40s who enjoys
- 32:49life, enjoys cards, likes a good joke, and so following whatever
- 32:55they're collecting. Like Greg collects pirate carts.
- 32:57I'm not interested in pirate carts, but I love watching those
- 32:59videos of him getting them. It's just fun.
- 33:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:05It's a combination of both if. Mike, if Mike or Greg change
- 33:10course and they start selling cars, it wouldn't bother me.
- 33:13If they do something that I wasn't interested in anymore, I
- 33:16would just unfollow. I wouldn't get bothered.
- 33:20But I'm I'm all for selling cars when you need to changing
- 33:28course. I know I've changed course half
- 33:30a dozen times in the last five years, so I wouldn't say that
- 33:34would bother me necessarily. But I get it doesn't changing
- 33:39course is OK. I mean, it's I'm and again, it's
- 33:41it's not like I'm hey, this you're not as good of a
- 33:43collector 'cause you just change course.
- 33:45It's not like that. It's just for me, like I kind of
- 33:47lose interest a little bit, not in the person, but in like the
- 33:50point of the channel other than like, hey, this is a cool
- 33:53person. I like this guy, you know, he's
- 33:54cool. But for me like to keep
- 33:57following along with like their videos and keep watching their
- 34:00videos. I also like, you know, to know
- 34:04where, what are you trying to build?
- 34:05Like what are you building? And if you keep changing course
- 34:08or you're like selling cards that you said you were, cards
- 34:12that you were, you're, you're gonna keep till you're 65.
- 34:15We all make changes. But from, from a like a viewing
- 34:18standpoint, I lose a little bit of interest.
- 34:21And you know, I more of it might be Instagram.
- 34:24I'm kind of annoyed at Instagram lately.
- 34:26And like, just like people that are doing like sales, like story
- 34:31sales, selling off cards and like, again, feel free.
- 34:35It's, that's what you do, you know, that's what you can do.
- 34:37It's no problem. But like, Hey, I remember when
- 34:40you picked that card up and then it was like, it was like a big
- 34:43great thing. And that wasn't that long ago
- 34:45because you were building a run of this and now you're selling
- 34:49it off and it's like, all right, that's whatever, do whatever you
- 34:51want. But like, maybe I'm not going to
- 34:53follow your account anymore because I don't know what you're
- 34:56doing with your, I don't get it. Like what is your point of
- 34:59what's the point of having a, an account where you're documenting
- 35:02what your pickups are and stuff? If there's no like progression
- 35:05of towards some goal for me, you know, that's, that's just the
- 35:08way I look at it with, with this stuff, other than like, Hey, we
- 35:11could be great friends. But if I'm going to follow your
- 35:13channel or follow your account, I need to feel invested a little
- 35:17bit as far as like what you're trying to build, you know what I
- 35:19mean? Yeah, and I also like to see a
- 35:23variety of topics I don't want to see or a variety of cards.
- 35:27And I'll give you an example, not a collector necessarily,
- 35:29although he, I guess he collects a little bit trike.
- 35:32Troy Reich seems like a great guy.
- 35:34I really enjoyed his channel for a long time and then all of a
- 35:39sudden started changing and not not changing, but doing the same
- 35:42topic every time. Can I profit off this?
- 35:45Can I profit off this? And it's very popular.
- 35:49He's doing extremely well, so good for him.
- 35:51It just doesn't interest me. I don't want to watch that type
- 35:53of video every single time. If you if you're going and
- 35:57buying collections and doing that type of thing, that's
- 36:01really interesting to me. I really want to watch those
- 36:04videos even though I don't do it myself, but if almost every
- 36:09video is can I profit? That doesn't really interest me,
- 36:12but just the just the name will make me lose interest.
- 36:17I hear you. Yep.
- 36:18And yeah, even something like that where someone buys a
- 36:21collection, they do a series of videos of here's what I'm going
- 36:23to keep, here's what I'm going to sell these cards to afford
- 36:27the cards that I'm. I love stuff like that.
- 36:29Because again, it's like, you know, you've seen a progression
- 36:31of a story and it might conclude on that and then maybe there's
- 36:35another one, but you know, you go along for the ride.
- 36:38And I think again, to bring Mike back up, it's, it says a lot
- 36:44when something you know, he's been, I don't know what is it 10
- 36:46/ 10 years he's been making videos consistently.
- 36:50That is, that is, that's impressive because you know, I
- 36:54even myself would like, I had a good like 3 year run where I, I
- 36:57didn't even make that many videos, but it was, you know,
- 36:59maybe on a weekly basis type thing.
- 37:01And then life just gets in the way.
- 37:03Sometimes you go through different stages where it's not
- 37:05in the cards, so to speak, to consistently make videos, but to
- 37:09be able to do that. I don't know, are you feeling
- 37:12that yourself? And you mentioned earlier that
- 37:14you're scaling back as far as videos and newsletters.
- 37:18Is that just, are you kind of burnt out with some of it or
- 37:22what are you? What are you doing?
- 37:23Not not even close to burnt out. There are 1,000,000 videos I
- 37:26still want to do, it's just a matter of time for me.
- 37:29I got the biggest promotion of my career two months ago at work
- 37:34and I don't have the time to put in anymore.
- 37:39I'm still doing, still trying to do 3 videos a week and
- 37:42occasionally a fourth, but I used to do 5 and now I'm
- 37:47struggling to get to 3. The newsletter, I had two
- 37:52newsletters a couple months ago, I'm down to 1 and I'm not even
- 37:56updating that all that often anymore.
- 37:58And I don't do social media much anymore.
- 38:02I just the, the time, man, it's, it's crazy.
- 38:04And I I get invited onto the live streams occasionally, not
- 38:07very often, but occasionally. And I have to consider the
- 38:12amount of time I put into this when my family relies on my
- 38:16income solely from my job and I have to do a great job at my day
- 38:22job. And if I don't, then this all
- 38:25goes away. Very similar to me, man.
- 38:28Yeah, it's a lot of it is, you know, I'm self-employed, have
- 38:32been for a while. So you almost feel guilty when,
- 38:36you know, I like not like my dad.
- 38:38He was, you know, he would go to work, you know, he'd work nights
- 38:41and he'd come home and he didn't really talk much about his job
- 38:44or anything. And he didn't probably think too
- 38:46much about it. So it was just kind of like a
- 38:48lot of a lot of our dads where maybe they just, you know, 9 to
- 38:515, they're thought about work while they're at work and they
- 38:53come home. And it was just as someone who's
- 38:56self-employed and works from home and stuff, a lot of the
- 38:59time it's hard to turn it off. And then it's like, you know, if
- 39:02I go and make a sports card video, I'm almost like feeling
- 39:04guilty, like I should be using that time for either work or
- 39:08obviously the family. So, yeah, it's just, you know,
- 39:11it's a tough period of time, which again, is all the reason
- 39:13why I respect people who have been able to do it consistently.
- 39:16And yeah, I mean, that's it's, it's a big, big commitment over
- 39:22time to be able to do that. But I'm thankful for it too.
- 39:24Because if it wasn't for guys like, you know, John Mangini and
- 39:27and Mike and those guys and Dylan who consistently put on
- 39:30videos, I wouldn't have a lot to watch 'cause if it was just guys
- 39:34like me and some of us who are like sporadic, it wouldn't as it
- 39:38wouldn't be as fun to be a viewer out there.
- 39:40Because I can always rely on a video from from you and Greg
- 39:44and, and Dylan and those guys. So I'm thankful that there are
- 39:48people who can stay consistent. Otherwise, I don't know, I, I
- 39:51kind of gave up watching a lot of stuff that I used to watch.
- 39:54Like I don't watch that much much sports anymore, TV and
- 39:59stuff like that. Now it's like I just watched
- 40:02like YouTube, which is crazy to think about.
- 40:04I watch more sports than ever. Shout out Theo Clemente
- 40:08Collector 2. Love his channel and Jake Wax
- 40:11pack wisdom these guys. I enjoy following their
- 40:15collections as well and I'm not interested in collecting
- 40:18Clemente cards but seeing Theo get another one or talk about a
- 40:22Clemente card and Jake buying these pre war Red Sox and
- 40:27vintage Red Sox cards that are kind of a little bit obscure.
- 40:31Although his last one, the Ted Williams not so obscure lot of
- 40:36fun. I'm glad you brought up that
- 40:38Theo is a perfect one too. I mean there's so many I could
- 40:41have mentioned to earlier, but he's a perfect example.
- 40:44Like he doesn't do a ton of pick up videos and stuff, but over
- 40:47the years of him being on YouTube I you could see the
- 40:50progression of like, hey, I'm a Clemente collector and I want to
- 40:53build an awesome collection of Clemente cards.
- 40:55I have. He has a list or and he's
- 40:58periodically checking that off and it progresses.
- 41:01I love that, you know, I love following along with something
- 41:04like that. That's, that's a perfect
- 41:05example. Same with Jake too.
- 41:06You know, he does a great job of kind of, you know, I mean
- 41:09showing where his collection's going.
- 41:11So I wish I was better at that. As far as I, I'm very organized
- 41:16as a collector now, but obviously don't do a good job of
- 41:19like documenting that on YouTube.
- 41:22But I, I, if I do start making videos again, I really want to
- 41:25focus on that as far as like showing the journey and where
- 41:29it's been, where it's at and then where I want to go with it.
- 41:32And then anytime I inch closer to my goals, make a video about
- 41:37that. I mean, that's that's content I
- 41:39like. Yeah, cool.
- 41:42Well, Adam, this is great. Thanks for joining me.
- 41:44Yeah, thanks for having me on. Greg will be back for the next
- 41:48one, I assume so, you know, people can.
- 41:50People don't have to worry about listening to me next time.
- 41:54This is great. All right, all right, I'll see
- 41:57you soon. Let's let's golf this summer.
- 42:00Let's do it. I'm going to go watch some
- 42:01Masters right now, actually. All right.
- 42:03Thanks for taking a break from it.
- 42:05All right. Thanks everybody for watching.
