- 0:01Speaker 1: Back in the day, in another life, I was a
- 0:04Speaker 1: college baseball umpire, and I was selected to work the
- 0:07Speaker 1: NCAA Division II College World Series.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Cool.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And it's held in Montgomery, Alabama. You know what's outside
- 0:17Speaker 1: of left field at the ballpark that I worked? And
- 0:19Speaker 1: I went there a couple times. I think I was
- 0:21Speaker 1: selected to go twice or three times, maybe twice. All
- 0:24Speaker 1: I remember was hot. I remember one year I umpired
- 0:27Speaker 1: that series, and I had a sinus infection. And it
- 0:30Speaker 1: was like 99 degrees and 100% humidity. The ballpark was steaming.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I had a bang-bang play at first base one night.
- 0:39Speaker 1: They had to sneak us out of the stadium. They
- 0:40Speaker 1: were ready to kill us because we had a big
- 0:43Speaker 1: controversial call against the home team. But anyway, those are
- 0:46Speaker 1: some of my memories as an umpire. But over left
- 0:48Speaker 1: field at that ballpark in Montgomery, Alabama, is where Hank
- 0:52Speaker 1: Williams Sr. is buried. And it's a cemetery.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Started his career there. Started his career there in the
- 0:59Speaker 2: late 1930s.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Ah, well, that's why he lays in rest there, right?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Do you know the big tradition there, apparently?
- 1:05Speaker 2: No.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Can I say this on a Thursday morning?
- 1:10Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Apparently, you have a beer and you urinate on the grave.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And that's like the local tradition. Now, I'm not real
- 1:18Speaker 1: sure why that's like a fond tribute to him.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Usually, I would think that would be viewed as a negative, but—
- 1:29Speaker 2: You think? I hope nobody's peeing on my grave. I mean—
- 1:35Speaker 2: I never thought of that being a affection.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Maybe you have a jellyfish sting or something.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I don't get it. Maybe it's like celebrating life and
- 1:45Speaker 1: you're just living and you're a renegade and you're wrong.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:49Speaker 2: The life Hank lived and the way he died, that
- 1:52Speaker 2: may not be altogether off base.
- 1:54Speaker 1: How did he die?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Oh, just heart attack brought on by huge self-abuse of
- 1:59Speaker 2: alcohol and other things.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I wonder if he had a 52% blockage in his eyes.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I don't know. But if he did, the technology did
- 2:05Speaker 2: not exist then.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm starting my therapy today. I'm starting my therapy today.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'm going to do plaque exhalation therapy. Now, you understand
- 2:14Speaker 1: this is, to many doctors, hoodoo. I am now doing
- 2:18Speaker 1: everything but using leeches. But my doctor believes that there's
- 2:23Speaker 1: an IV therapy— That he swears reduces plaque in your arteries.
- 2:28Speaker 1: All right. And it's called. All right. Why not? Why not?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Because it's the intravenous thing where fluids run through your
- 2:34Speaker 2: body and supposedly carry stuff out. Right.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And this is supposedly. When you pee.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Once again, the urine theme returns to the show. So
- 2:43Speaker 2: Chad GPT is kind of mocking me for doing this.
- 2:47Speaker 2: But says it's not total quackery, but it's a little quackery.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Semi-quackery.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Half a quackery. But this chelation therapy, it's a big
- 2:55Speaker 2: deal now these days, right? I mean, these IV drips.
- 2:59Speaker 2: The drip bar. We have drip bars all over the
- 3:01Speaker 2: place right now.
- 3:01Speaker 3: See?
- 3:02Speaker 1: So we'll see. So that's what's going to happen today.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And we're going to start. Then I meet a cardiologist
- 3:06Speaker 1: next week.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Cool.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And I did 30 minutes on the bike yesterday. Excellent.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'm trying to do 30 on the elliptical. I made
- 3:15Speaker 1: it to 10 before. I had to go to, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 1: pass out.
- 3:19Speaker 2: You'll get better. It's all good.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Elliptical is hard. It's really hard. But anyway.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It's so smooth and non-impact. I could do this all day.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It's torture. Torture. But I'm going to do it. The
- 3:29Speaker 1: new me is here. I'm ready. Because we've got to
- 3:31Speaker 1: be around forever. You and I have got to do
- 3:33Speaker 1: M & M Extra for the next 20 years. We do.
- 3:36Speaker 2: We do. Can I take 60 seconds to do something
- 3:38Speaker 2: for the listenership? It might give us something, too. You
- 3:41Speaker 2: watched the GOP convention. I had a guy. Anytime there's
- 3:44Speaker 2: a call. where I got 60 seconds and it's somebody
- 3:46Speaker 2: who needs to be dispatched into lunar orbit. I need
- 3:49Speaker 2: to bolster it a little bit. Guy calls me and says, yeah, Mark, hey, Mr.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Religious Freedom, what do you think about Trump stepping all
- 3:55Speaker 2: over everybody's religious freedom by making them swear an oath
- 3:58Speaker 2: to him? First of all, it's either a total prank
- 4:00Speaker 2: call or a total idiot. Either way, For anybody that
- 4:03Speaker 2: doesn't know, did Trump say, raise your hands and repeat
- 4:05Speaker 2: after me, I pledge on behalf of this president who
- 4:08Speaker 2: loves America so much he can't even breathe to get
- 4:11Speaker 2: out and get everybody to vote Republican? Of course he did.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And he even said, you realize having taken the pledge
- 4:16Speaker 2: what happens if you don't do it? You go to hell.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I don't want this to happen to you. It's the
- 4:20Speaker 2: most Trumpian thing ever. Of course it is. That's what
- 4:23Speaker 2: he did. I heard the exchange. I heard your exchange
- 4:27Speaker 2: with the caller. Can I say something personal without you
- 4:30Speaker 2: getting mad at me? It depends.
- 4:32Speaker 1: The single biggest criticism that I get. Is that I
- 4:36Speaker 1: interrupt people too much and I don't let them speak. Look,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I know you were frustrated with that guy and he
- 4:43Speaker 1: probably was a troll or a clown or whatever. I didn't.
- 4:47Speaker 2: You didn't let him say three words. That guy didn't
- 4:50Speaker 2: get to say anything. Part of that was the clock
- 4:51Speaker 2: because I got to get to you.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I know. I know. However, and also, you know what?
- 4:58Speaker 2: If there's a criticism I get often, it's that when
- 5:02Speaker 2: people are contrarian, even when they're contrarian and silly, I
- 5:05Speaker 2: let them go too long.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Really?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Oh, all the time.
- 5:10Speaker 1: See, I don't do that. Why don't you hang up
- 5:11Speaker 1: on that guy?
- 5:12Speaker 2: That's kind of fascinating.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It's tough. It's a fascinating dynamic, this talk show world
- 5:17Speaker 1: that you and I are in, because I get resentful
- 5:20Speaker 1: of somebody like you because here you are, this legend,
- 5:22Speaker 1: this towering figure of talk radio. You handle the guy. Look,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I probably would have reacted the same way. I think
- 5:28Speaker 1: he was being a jerk. However, I can promise you
- 5:31Speaker 1: that had I done to that caller what you did,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I'd have 150 text messages. And here's the difference. I
- 5:39Speaker 1: pay too much attention to this stupid text line.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Completely.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I shouldn't even watch it because, I mean, I get
- 5:45Speaker 1: all this feedback. Just do what you got to do.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and you were being you. And I kind of
- 5:50Speaker 2: loved it. But that's what I do to people sometimes.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You don't let anybody talk. You're so obnoxious.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I hate you. Why don't you let people talk? And,
- 5:58Speaker 1: by the way, feel free to text me because I'll
- 6:00Speaker 1: read it.
- 6:00Speaker 3: 800-655-MIKE.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Lord knows. And there are texts.
- 6:01Speaker 3: 800-655-6453.
- 6:01Speaker 1: By the way, I got an update on Babs.
- 6:11Speaker 2: The pastor there at St. Andrew's Presbyterian.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, she's the minister to the parish of the progressive
- 6:17Speaker 1: church that James Tallarico goes to. And I'm a little
- 6:22Speaker 1: torn on this. I want to be fair. I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 1: I remember when— this goes back to John McCain and the
- 6:28Speaker 1: Jeremiah Wright days with Obama. Remember that? Jeremiah Wright, that vicious, scoundrel, awful,
- 6:35Speaker 1: awful pastor. And, you know, that was Obama's church. But
- 6:40Speaker 1: McCain wouldn't call him out. McCain refused to call out
- 6:44Speaker 1: the Reverend Jeremiah Wright who said G.D. America.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It shouldn't be God bless America. It should be G.D.
- 6:50Speaker 1: America.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And this is America's chickens coming home to roost. He
- 6:53Speaker 2: was a poisonous, poisonous figure.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And McCain would not make that a campaign issue. John
- 7:00Speaker 1: McCain refused to do it. And look, whatever you think
- 7:03Speaker 1: of John McCain, he was probably trying to be honorable
- 7:05Speaker 1: and say, I can't blame Obama for the words of
- 7:10Speaker 1: another person like that, even if it's his pastor.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So if we– I don't know if that's true or not.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I think you got to take everything and run with it.
- 7:17Speaker 2: It's totally– that was the– there was a certain decency,
- 7:21Speaker 2: a certain grace that is a good– it kind of
- 7:25Speaker 2: sometimes reminds me of you. It's a good human quality
- 7:28Speaker 2: to have. But when you have a campaign to win–
- 7:32Speaker 2: It's not like you mobilize and weaponize things that you
- 7:34Speaker 2: should not. And nobody should have said that if Obama
- 7:37Speaker 2: and Michelle are there in the seats of that church,
- 7:40Speaker 2: that must mean that they absolutely believe it as well.
- 7:43Speaker 2: But I'll tell you something. If I go to a
- 7:45Speaker 2: church and the pastor rolls out a G.D. America, you'll
- 7:48Speaker 2: see me hit the door before he's done. So we
- 7:52Speaker 2: are to be judged by the churches we attend because
- 7:55Speaker 2: that means that day in, day out, by and large,
- 7:58Speaker 2: we approve of the messaging coming from this church.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Well, I think it's important to look at the congregation
- 8:03Speaker 1: of Tallarico's church. And going back to Babs, evidently they
- 8:07Speaker 1: got all this undercover video of her spouting off all
- 8:10Speaker 1: kinds of stuff. To me, even more than her opinion
- 8:15Speaker 1: that Tallarico is going to revert to his church far-left
- 8:19Speaker 1: ways after he gets elected. And incidentally, is there anybody
- 8:22Speaker 1: who doubts that that's true? Of course he's going to.
- 8:25Speaker 1: He's trying to sound moderate now because he's a radical, crazy,
- 8:30Speaker 1: far-left lunatic. And he knows it, so he's going to
- 8:34Speaker 1: try to pivot to the middle a little bit. Oh,
- 8:37Speaker 1: and he's walking back all of his most extreme positions.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And she is right. He's going to revert back to
- 8:42Speaker 1: who he is if he gets elected senator. But here's
- 8:45Speaker 1: something even more important that came from that undercover video.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Did you hear what she said about what congregants think
- 8:51Speaker 1: about the guy who tried to kill Trump?
- 8:54Speaker 2: It's just 30 seconds.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I've got it. So let's do this. Do you want
- 8:59Speaker 1: to play it or do.
- 8:59Speaker 2: You want me to play it? If you do it,
- 9:00Speaker 2: there will be a video component, right? Yeah, I think
- 9:03Speaker 2: we do.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Let's play it. Let's play it and let's listen together.
- 9:07Speaker 3: If you polled our membership and asked them whether they
- 9:11Speaker 3: were Christian, agnostic, or atheist— the vast majority would say
- 9:16Speaker 3: agnostic or atheist. Because they don't buy the religion that
- 9:24Speaker 3: has been, that we got from the Puritans. We still
- 9:30Speaker 3: have people in this church that wish that that young
- 9:33Speaker 3: man had not just nicked his ear, but been more successful.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Boy, she sounds like a real doozy. She's a real
- 9:41Speaker 2: piece of work. So there's two pieces of news there.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Let's build slowly. First, most of the people there in
- 9:47Speaker 2: that church, church, mind you, are either agnostic or atheist. Great.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Okay, whatever.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Listen, you do you. But then we also have people
- 9:56Speaker 2: in the church who wish that that young man had
- 9:59Speaker 2: done more than Nick. trump's ear they wish he had
- 10:03Speaker 2: been killed.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And mark i think it's important to point out that
- 10:06Speaker 1: talarico feels comfortable being around a bunch of congregants who
- 10:10Speaker 1: think that way That's it. I mean, these are lunatics.
- 10:14Speaker 1: These are evil, twisted, goofy people. And by the way,
- 10:18Speaker 1: why do they even bother to gather on a Sunday morning?
- 10:21Speaker 1: A bunch of agnostics going, let's go to church? I'd
- 10:24Speaker 1: love to hear those sermons. They're brief. They're brief. Get
- 10:28Speaker 1: the pot. Yeah, very quick. Very quick.
- 10:30Speaker 2: There's nothing out there, everybody. Go to an old country
- 10:35Speaker 2: buffet and get some chicken and dumplings now.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. Now, I need you to lift me up.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I'm down. I'm really frustrated. And you got me off
- 10:46Speaker 1: the ledge on the stupid immigration thing that I was
- 10:48Speaker 1: wrong about. You were right about it. So here's what's next. Headline.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Congress goes home. After seven work days since the summer
- 10:57Speaker 1: break ended, and they won't be back until after the midterms.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Can't help it. People see that. There's Mike Johnson humming
- 11:06Speaker 1: a hum and a hum and a, well, we're going
- 11:07Speaker 1: to go home and we're going to, we're going to
- 11:09Speaker 1: go back to our districts. Yeah. You're going to go home.
- 11:12Speaker 1: You're going to take a mark. They, and they've only
- 11:14Speaker 1: been back.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I didn't realize this. They, they worked for seven days,
- 11:20Speaker 2: one week. Well, a week and a half days, seven days.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And now they're gone again and they won't come back
- 11:27Speaker 2: until after the midterm elections.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Hmm. And, Mark, it's like we're trying to lose. Optics.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Optics are important. Are we trying to lose to the Democrats?
- 11:37Speaker 2: Honest to gosh question.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Are they— is Johnson in on it now? I mean, do
- 11:44Speaker 1: they want to be the minority party? Do they want
- 11:47Speaker 1: the Democrats to win the House and the Senate? I
- 11:49Speaker 1: am so discouraged today, and I don't want to be discouraged, Mark.
- 11:53Speaker 1: We've got to win.
- 11:54Speaker 2: We've got to win so badly. And I'm sick of polls.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I don't believe polls. There's not a single poll that
- 12:01Speaker 2: shows Ken Paxton winning in Texas.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Not one. Not one. I'm starting to think they might
- 12:07Speaker 1: be right.
- 12:10Speaker 2: That I will talk you off the ledge for. It's
- 12:13Speaker 2: a complete mirage. But do you know how discouraged people are?
- 12:17Speaker 2: If I'm discouraged, the happy warrior, imagine what millions and
- 12:21Speaker 2: millions of Americans are feeling right now. And discouraged voters
- 12:24Speaker 2: are in some ways less likely to get up off
- 12:27Speaker 2: the couch and bring about the change that even they
- 12:30Speaker 2: know we need or bring about the protection of the
- 12:33Speaker 2: Republican majorities that they know we need.
- 12:35Speaker 1: So how do we fix this? What do we do, Mark?
- 12:38Speaker 1: I mean, I'm thinking about rallying the troops. I might
- 12:41Speaker 1: be getting new Gingrich. Look, people around me are now saying, well,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know we're going to lose bad in November. I
- 12:47Speaker 1: got a call last night from somebody on my team,
- 12:50Speaker 1: my staff, who pays close attention to this stuff. And
- 12:55Speaker 1: she said to me flat out, you know we're going
- 12:57Speaker 1: to lose in November, right? And she paused for my reaction.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I didn't give her a reaction because I thought, well, no,
- 13:04Speaker 1: that doesn't cross my mind.
- 13:05Speaker 2: We can't lose, Mark. And because nobody knows. I mean,
- 13:08Speaker 2: this is the weirdest chemistry going into a midterm ever.
- 13:12Speaker 2: We should, as conservatives and Republicans, be amped up and
- 13:16Speaker 2: ready to walk through fire and crawl through broken glass
- 13:18Speaker 2: to prevent Democrat majorities because these people are crazy. And
- 13:22Speaker 2: if we can't do that, it's on us. That having
- 13:26Speaker 2: been said, it would be helpful if the folks whose
- 13:30Speaker 2: cause we are trying to lift up would look like
- 13:32Speaker 2: they had a better work ethic, could have passed the
- 13:34Speaker 2: SAVE Act, you know, things like that. Could unify behind
- 13:39Speaker 2: our nominees?
- 13:39Speaker 1: That would be nice, too. And I got to say this.
- 13:42Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I hate even putting these words in the universe,
- 13:45Speaker 1: but I know I'm going to say out loud what
- 13:47Speaker 1: millions of Americans are thinking. How about ending this war
- 13:51Speaker 1: and get gas prices back under like $ 5 a gallon?
- 13:55Speaker 1: I mean, Mark and Trump last night said, oh, this
- 13:57Speaker 1: war is about to end. The gas prices are going
- 13:59Speaker 1: to plummet. I love you, Mr. President. I respect you.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Show me. We got 48 days. Yep. We got 48.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I hate feeling this way. And by the way, P.S.,
- 14:12Speaker 1: you're not any help. You didn't help me at all.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You haven't done anything to help me at all today.
- 14:17Speaker 2: The short answer to the question is there's a long
- 14:20Speaker 2: list of things that we have done and reasons why
- 14:22Speaker 2: we deserve to stay in power. And we need to
- 14:24Speaker 2: stress and repeat and put those on a tape loop.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And I know you'll do it. I know I'll do it.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I think most of our candidates will do it as well.
- 14:31Speaker 2: That's a short answer. It's pretty vague because the point
- 14:34Speaker 2: that you make is really, really good.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Well, it's a great talk topic. I'm going to dive
- 14:37Speaker 1: in and do it on my show. And I have
- 14:39Speaker 1: a hunch it might come up on M & M
- 14:41Speaker 1: Extra today. Apple, Spotify, wherever you get your podcasts, check
- 14:44Speaker 1: it out. YouTube at noon Eastern, 11 Central, live. Come
- 14:48Speaker 1: on in.
- 14:48Speaker 2: The water's just fine with M & M, Mark and Mike.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I can't wait to see you then, my friend.
