- 0:00There is a considerable confusion about the nature of
- 0:04the soul. A sizeable portion of humanity
- 0:07denies the existence of the soul, while another segment of
- 0:11humanity reduces its value below that of material possessions and
- 0:17outward satisfactions. The ego personality, bound up in
- 0:22the actions and reactions of the mind, life and body, has little
- 0:27time to consider the implications of the soul, its
- 0:30existence, its purpose, its action, and its significance for
- 0:36our growth and development. Besides the confusion about the
- 0:40soul, there is also a lot of confusion surrounding the term
- 0:44psychic. Particularly in the West, the
- 0:47term has been associated with occult phenomena and powers and
- 0:52to a great degree tied up with ideas about seeing the future
- 0:56and telling one's fortune. Sviorobindo utilizes the term
- 1:01psychic and psychic being to describe the soul in its
- 1:06manifestation and active role in evolution of consciousness.
- 1:11It is essential to avoid the confusion engendered by the more
- 1:14common, more sensationalistic way the term has developed in
- 1:18the modern world. The soul represents the essence
- 1:23of who we are, and it is the soul essence, the psychic being,
- 1:28that actually guides the development of mind, life and
- 1:32body from behind. Sages, seers, rishis have all
- 1:38described their experience of the soul.
- 1:42It is possible for us to develop the receptivity to hear the
- 1:45voice of the soul, to follow its guidance, and to thereby uplift
- 1:50and ennoble our lives and realize the deeper purpose, the
- 1:55significance of our lives. The soul is not a matter of
- 1:59philosophy, nor even religion. It is something that an
- 2:04individual can awaken to and experience in his own life.
- 2:09Once that happens, there is no doubt and no chance of confusion
- 2:13any longer. People who have the experience
- 2:17may not call it the soul as there are many words that people
- 2:21have used to describe the experience and the motivation.
- 2:26Some people return from a near death experience with a new
- 2:29conviction about the divine presence and their own
- 2:32consecration to the divine. Whether they call it a soul
- 2:37experience or not, they have had a touch of that deeper reality
- 2:42and deeper meaning in life, and it has changed them.
- 2:48We are more than cogs in a machine.
- 2:50We are more than workers, consumers, or enjoyers of the
- 2:54external pleasures of life. When we awaken to the
- 2:58opportunity for spiritual growth, we quickly begin to
- 3:01recognize that there is something in us, something
- 3:05deeper, something inside that calls us to take up that effort
- 3:10to find the soul within us and thereby solidify the connection
- 3:15between our individual being and the divine consciousness that
- 3:19manifests the entire creation. The present book, The Psychic
- 3:25Being Soul, Its Nature, Mission and Evolution is a wide-ranging
- 3:30exploration of the action of the soul and its active part in our
- 3:34lives. The Psychic Being, including a
- 3:38review of the meaning and nature of the psychic being, the role,
- 3:43function and action of the psychic being, the growth and
- 3:47development of the psychic, the psychic being in spiritual
- 3:51practice, and the psychic being in connection to the afterlife
- 3:56and rebirth reference Sri aurobindo and the mother.
